Laki hugs you from behind for a good long while, her chin resting on your shoulder. She removes it and lets her head rest against you instead.

“You’re too tall.” She complains. She must have been stretching her neck up to get her chin on your shoulder.

“You’re just noticing now?” You joke.

“You don’t stand up straight most of the time.”

“Oh.” Huh. You check your posture and find that you are feeling a bit weird. You’ll have to watch that. Despite your best efforts, you still stand up a little straighter. You think you can feel Laki smile.

“Can I tell you something?”

“Of course.”

“You’re the only person that makes me feel like a woman. I don’t mean just last night either.”

You have no idea how to respond. Laki’s never this vulnerable. Does she think she’s not womanly because she’s aggressive? Your sister is a little like that and you never thought of her as less of a girl. Is she saying that because she doesn’t think she’s cute? Is she doing that thing mom does sometimes where she tries to get dad to compliment her?

Well they aren't 14 inches tall, so there's that, but Laki having to lift her chin up to put it on Herb's head isn't that crazy. With that picture, the sizes seem spot on.

You turn around to face her. She keeps her eyes focused on yours, but after a few seconds finally breaks and looks away.

Why is that so much cuter coming from her?

“You make me feel more masculine. But you shouldn’t worry about that sort of thing. What matters is that you’re you.” You lean forward, put your hand on the top of her head. She leans up into your hand a little more, like a pokemon that wants to be pet. You give a subtle little tussle of her hair and kiss her right above her eyebrows. “But for the record, you did look really cute in that dress.“

“Come on, Soft Hands,” her voice is high pitched, but low in volume, “that’s not fair.” She plays with the front of your shirt.

“Laki! Herb! There you are!” Keira comes out of nowhere. Cutiefly follows her and buzzes around Laki. “We’re almost there. You should get your things.” She blinks. “You two look weird, are you okay?”

“Yup!” Laki says, her voice getting that deeper, more confident. “Come on, Soft Hands.” She reaches out to you and grabs your hand like she’s going to help you with a step. It’s only then that you see you were standing on an elevated platform just a little higher than she was. Did she do that on purpose? It’s a little deflating to be lower, but you don’t mind that much. You still stand up a bit straighter as you follow to your room to get your stuff.

Dice is sprawled out on some things and doesn’t seem to want to move until Mace pushes him off. Dice simply goes limp like it’s a game and doesn’t really mind. Gobble and Bella help you pack, but get easily distracted and end up play wrestling instead.

Once you have all your things and check twice, you go to meet up with the rest. You run into Valerie first.

“I won’t be able to see you off.” She says. “I want to be on the bridge while you get off in case there’s any trouble. Papa always says that safety should be the first priority on a boat.” She leans in closer. “Call me every day so we can talk about what to do next, okay?”

She gives you a quick hug. You sort of wish you were going to see her contest. The costumes alone would probably be great. But you’ll be departing to go to that Fisherman’s cousin’s island. You’re not sure when you’ll see her next. Hopefully it won’t be too long.

You run into Polu next. He’s got a big grin on his face.

“Bro! So this is your stop, huh?” He slaps you on the shoulder. “Good luck out there.”

“You too!” You try slapping him back, but you sort of hesitate and it’s awkwardly soft and slow.

“So, bro. Look, I wanted to tell you this earlier, but about that bone clip...”

“Yeah?” You lean in closer.

“If Keira or pretty much anyone not from Kontote sees you use it, they’ll flip. Otherwise they probably won’t even recognize it, except for someone like Keira.” He mentioned that before.

“But why?”

“I don’t know how much history you know, and what they tell mainlanders. Not everyone on Kontote is as...orthodox. There used to be a Normal type temple that we ran. There isn’t one anymore.” He looks over your shoulder to make sure nobody is coming. You feel like you won’t have that much time to talk before someone comes by.

“They say we burned down all the other island temples and attacked their villages when they sent their warriors to deal with Akaneki, -because all their raids were getting out of control-. We did send warriors out, but that was just to protect them. We were tipped off that Akeneki was launching a surprise counterattack.”

“How did they burn down?”

“It was a conspiracy led by the Ghost temple. They wanted to take our power because the Normal type temple was the leader of the council, because we also represented humans.”

“If that’s true, why doesn’t everyone know it? Can you tell them?”

“It was a long time ago. Nobody involved is alive today, and nobody would believe us. We just have the stigma of betraying everyone. And the Steel temple.” He looks worried. “You believe me, right bro?”

[Awhile back that came up. There's a skyship captain setting that could be fun. A Teen Titans-esque superhero team set in a OC universe, or maybe a One Punch Man type setting. Those two seemed like the closest fit. Another would be a D&D type adventure. If they’re guided before they’re ready, they’ll suffer in the final part of the journey. In the old days, Ghost pokemon and spirits were everywhere. Sometimes they caused trouble, though, but that wasn’t that common. The ghost temple used that to gain influence. They played up trouble with ghost types and said we were impotent to do anything about it. Their dogma is all about guiding spirits to the next world, through the great hole, as quickly as possible. But that’s like sending a kid out into the world as soon as they can walk.”

You still don’t understand how the bone clip works. He must see your confusion, because he continues.

“If you snap it, it sounds out all the living energy of. All the ghosts around will scatter like dust. They don’t die or anything. They’re already dead. But they’ll take a long, long time to bring themselves back together. The others think every minute a ghost isn’t going to the portal is bad and that’s why ghosts act out sometimes, so they say it’s cruel. But it’s not. They don’t have the same sense of time, and they act out for lots of complicated reasons. Most don’t even act out at all.

Before you can follow up with any questions, Hana comes by. “There you are. I wanted to say bye before you left.”

Polu, sensing something, pats you one last time on the back. “See you around bro. We’ll have another rematch soon, okay?”

Hana watches him leave. She doesn’t look like she knows what she wants to say exactly, though.

She looks happy and mulls that over. “Alright!” She makes an awkward elbow pump. “It’s a promise, then!” She looks like she’s been hyping herself up just to be that loud. Her eyes are really looking expressive with that eyeliner. She gives you one more hug. “AndmaybenexttimeIcanblowyouagainmaybe okay bye!” She runs off.

You didn’t catch any of that. She didn’t sound like she was speaking Loanan, but you’re not exactly an expert.

You meet up with Keira and Laki on the deck.

“Ready to go?” Laki hops over the edge of the ship onto Wailmer’s waiting back. Keira leaps over with ease. The sea is calm and the sky is clear, but it still scares you a bit to just ride a pokemon out like that. They’re perfectly at ease dealing with the ocean, though.

You nod. You make sure all your pokemon are here, double check your pockets, but where is your bag? You look up to see Mr. Schwibbles. He lifts it up for you to take.

“Umm, thanks.” You try not to look directly at him, but you still see the giant, scary grin he gives in return.

You look over the edge of the ship, Laki and Keira and waiting for you to join them. You can’t think of anything you’re forgetting, but it’ll be at least a few days if not longer before you see Polu, Valerie, and Hana again.

You look back to the ship one last time, then hop over.

“Woah.” You almost slip. Both of the girls grab your hands and help you keep steady.

“I heard that mainlanders don’t have sea legs, and that's why you only travel on large boats.” Keira says. “Are you going to be okay? I know you were on here before, but I thought maybe it was just going to take you awhile to get used to it. That happens even to us sometimes.”

“He’s a mainlander, not a fire pokemon.” Laki laughs and pats you on the back once you’re stable. “Besides, we’re close. It’s right over there.” She points.

“I don’t see anything.”

Keira and Laki exchange a look. “You’re not supposed to look for the island.” Keira tells you. Look at the clouds, and the differences in the waves.”

Try as you might, you can’t really see any difference.

“It’s okay.” Keira assures you. “You don’t have any ocean where you come from, right? I’m the same with this thing.” She holds up her pokedex. From the screen, it looks like she really mucked up the settings.

You have a little bit of time before you arrive.

Personally I really really enjoy Laki AND Hana, even if Laki is my first choice Hana and Kiera are in tight contention for a very close second.
Valerie seems more like a very good close friend, maybe sex friend depending on how the relationship ends out in the end.
Jane is solidly in last still though. Though I'd like to still help her.
I wish Polu was an option. It'd be great to surprise him one day with Herb in a dress, all trussed up with the girls leering and egging on the islander.

Dice keeps advancing closer to Laki’s Meowth to

“Want me to help with that?” You motion to her Pokedex.

“Help how?”

“Well, I noticed when you try to go to the menu, you have to close a bunch of pop-ups.”

“What-ups?” She looks confused and concerned .

“Not much, whatup with you?” Laki jokes. She seems like she’s in a good mood since your talk. You offer a light chuckle. Keira looks even more confused.

“Here, I’ll show you what I mean.” You gently take it from her. She moves behind you and starts leaning on your back and watching over your shoulder. She’s draped on you like a cape. You know from experience that her body paint won’t rub off easily, but the closeness still makes you a little self conscious.

“What’s that button do?” She presses it, closing the menu you were on. “Oh. Sorry. I’ll stop pressing stuff now.”

You show her how to adjust settings. She seems disinterested in the quality of life stuff like organizing contacts and making shortcuts, but when you get on the topic of changing the wallpaper, she’s enthralled. “It’s like bodypaint for the pokedex screen!”

From there, it’s a flurry of her crawling over you to mess with it until you give up trying to show how important certain updates are or why she should care. To her credit, she does her best to act interested and she clearly wants to understand, but her urge to be artistic clearly nags at her until you just let her at it.

“Thanks! You stone!” She says, not looking up as she zooms through different themes and backgrounds.

“Rock.” You correct.

She moves back and forth in her crossed legs as she fiddles with the device. “Hmm, this would be perfect if it didn’t have that color in the bottom.

“You could use the picture editor. It’s not that great, but you can replace the colour at least.”

She’s more confused than ever. You open up the default picture program and she’s floored. “You can paint inside the machine!” She puts it down and leaps back, then picks it up again. “What? No. What?”

Even the pokemon swarm around her. Of course, they’re just curious about what the big deal is and don’t care much about the pokedex, but her enthusiasm gets them all riled up.

The island looks fairly small. You can see why it’s just a dot on the map. The majority of it is covered in extremely luscious green plants and trees.

“So, where is he?” Laki asks as you pull up on Wailmer.

“He can’t be far.” Keira says. “Oh look! Coconuts! And the trees aren’t marked, so anyone can take them.”

“Let’s explore a bit, and find some really good coconuts.”

“Sounds good. Just keep your head up.” Laki tells you.

You all hop off Wailmer and make your way to the beach. Laki lets the large Pokemon stay out but promise to stay close and above water.

You look around for a bit and get further into the bushes. It’s surprisingly thick in some areas and thin in others. There’s something that doesn’t feel quite right about it, though. Keira looks especially bothered. She touches her face to make sure her face is fully painted. It’s not a scary vibe, but it does feel like something is off.

“What about that tree?” Laki points to one with a particularly large group of coconuts.

“Looks good to me. What do you say, Gobble?”

Gobble is already salivating. He’s been pretty patient with you passing by so many perfectly good trees, but it’s come to an end. He looks at the tree and thinks for a minute. You’re about to suggest a plan of action to get them, but when you see Gobble try to communicate something to Mace, the three of you get curious and decide to see where this is going.

Mace looks hesitant, but eventually agrees to whatever Gobble is proposing. Keira can understand all of this and looks excited at whatever is coming up.

Gobble picks up Mace, takes aim, and throws up at the coconuts! Mace smashes through them, sending them tumbling down. He quickly activates his jets to stop from landing like a rock. The throw and the landing were both a bit sloppy, but it worked.

Gobble scrambles to eat a coconut, not bothering to crack it open or anything. You can see the thing bend under the power of his jaw. Instead of crushing it, he gets Dice over for help, and the small water pokemon easily crunches it. Gobble is dismayed when Dice ends up swallowing most of it, though. Dice didn’t seem to understand the favor.

Something’s wrong. You feel the sunlight vanish from your back. You jump forward reflexively and just barely get missed from the swipe of a large claw. It’s a Slaking!

It roars!

Herb will try to move his dead arm from under her, only for her to partially wake up and sleepily sprawl up him and snuggle harder into her big teddy bear.
