You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were standing in the library of the Templar's local fortress monastery, the interior of which appeared to be sullied by the presence of a mage. A very young mage, yes, but a mage nonetheless.

While you were rather ambivalent about the use of magic, you knew your Witch Hunter kin were much less tolerant of it, and you suspected if you were part of their ranks, you would have kicked the girl out on first reaction.

"Oh, she's kinda cute." Morgan muses.

"She is a menace." Havel grumbles.

"Oh! Hi, Havie!" Nino waves happily amid the floating books. "You brought more friends? That's great!"

"We are not friends, and please do not treat this library as your abode." Havel says sternly.

"Awwwww, but it's so cozy here!" Nino wraps herself up in her cloak.

You turn and give an incredulous stare to Havel. How in the dark moons did a mage get into the library?

"A moment of weakness on my part." Havel sighs. "She came to monastery seeking shelter and I let her in. I never suspected that she was a mage."

"Really? The cloak and blatant use of magic didn't give that away?" Morgan raises an eyebrow.

"It was dark." Havel insists. "Either way, she won't leave, but she hasn't done anything to warrant us removing her by force..."

"And I'm sure you don't want to risk getting your nice little library here blown up." Morgan observes.

"That too."

"Don't worry, I won't use explosion magic to defend myself!" Nino says cheerfully. "It's one of the few spell schools I haven't quite mastered yet!"

You shake your head.

You turn your gaze to Morgan. Maybe she could talk some sense into this mage?

"W-what, me?" Morgan points to herself in surprise. "Not sure if you hadn't figured this out already, but I'm not really a people person."

You then point to yourself and then to Havel. The two of you definitely weren't suited to this sort of trial.

"I guess you have a point there." Morgan sighs. "Fine, I'll see what I can do."

"I'll leave you two to it, then." Havel says as he heads out of the library. "There are other matters I must attend to."

You notice Havel exit the library at a very quick pace. A foreboding sign.

Meanwhile, Morgan walks up to Nino as casually as she could and sits down next to the little mage.

"Hey, Nino, right?" Morgan smiles. "My name's Morgan."

"Hi!" Nino smiles back, simply oozing childlike exuberance. "Wow, you're pretty!"

"U-um, thanks." Morgan hesitates, not used to the compliment.

"Are you a Black Templar too?" Nino asks as she sets her current book aside.

"Not really, I'm just tagging along with him." Morgan points to you. "We're planning on heading out into the Frontier to hunt some monsters. Stuff like that."

"Oh really?" Nino's eyes widen. "H-hey, this is gonna sound really, really weird, but... can you let me come with you?"

"What?!" Morgan's eyes widen in surprise.

"I really really want to see what's out there!" Nino says, her childlike exuberance fading away to stubborn determination. "I've already graduated from the Magic Academy, so I know all the standard spells, and a few more, too! I won't be a burden!"

Morgan looks to you, completely incredulous.

You step forward. You knew what to do. There was only one animal on earth that could sense how authentic and truthful a person was being. You set little Romulus down on the ground in front of Nino.

"Ohmygoshisthatapuppy?!" Nino practically (though most likely literally) teleports across the room and picks up Romulus, rubbing her cheek against his. Romulus barks happily and licks her back.

Seeing this, you give a thumbs up to Morgan.

"...are you serious?" Morgan points to Romulus. "You're going to trust her based on that?"

You nod.

"Well, I guess we could always use a good mage..." Morgan shakes her head in disbelief. "Still, never thought we'd get one that's so... young."

You shrug. Templar neophytes were sent into battle at around her age. In some cases they were probably even younger.

"I get the feeling that you Templars don't care about stuff like that, though." Morgan narrows her eyes at you.

You shrug. If she can pull her (admittedly small) weight, then you had no issues with her.

"Ah, excuse me, Lord Templar." One of the serfs nervously steps into the library, bowing his head to you in deference. "There is an... altercation at the front gate that may require your attention."

You look to the serf, and then to Morgan, Nino, and Romulus.

You nod at Morgan to follow you as you head out the library, you heavy armor clanking as you break into a run. That report sounded urgent.

"Come on!" Morgan grabs Nino's hand and firmly but gently pulls her along, Nino keeping a tight grip on Romulus with her other hand.

And there, standing at the front gate was the familiar back of Havel's armor, in his hands a massive mace almost as large as he was. You heard tales of felling many dragons with just a single strike of that weapon.

And standing before him were two knights clad in light, sapphire armor. You immediately recognized the design as belonging to the Mana Knights. And they could only be here for one reason...

"I will say this again." Havel growls. The head of his mace was sitting on the ground in a safe position, but his grip was firm and ready to attack. "I will not allow you within these walls."

"Yer sheltering a runaway mage!" One of the Mana Knights points an accusing finger at Havel. "That's our jurisdiction!"

"Caroline, please calm down." The other Mana Knight puts a hand on her companion's shoulder. "We did not come here to fight."

"Well they don't seem to be giving us much choice now, are they, Justine?!" Caroline snaps back.

Ah, now you were starting to understand. They were here to take Nino-

"I'M NOT GOING BACK TO THE TOWER!" You hear Nino yell from behind. You turn around to see Nino poking her head out from behind Morgan, sticking her tongue out at the two Mana Knights.

"Nino! Get out here right now!" Caroline shifts her accusing point to the little mage. "The Archmages are worried-"

"They're just gonna keep me locked up in the Tower for 'my own good!'" Nino yells back, sticking her tongue out again. "They're all old and mean!"

"This is certainly troublesome..." Justine sighs.

"And who the hell are you?!" Caroline looks up at you. She raises the visor of her helmet to reveal a single golden eye and an eyepatch covering the other. Strands of white hair like Morgan's poked out from under her helmet.

She was also very, VERY short. Easily a head shorter than Morgan, meaning that you simply towered over her. Not being intimidated by your sheer physical size spoke a lot about her confidence.

However, the standoff doesn't last long, as Caroline instantly caves and backs up.

"W-w-w-w-whaaat?!" Caroline stammers as she falls back in line with her partner. "J-Justine, there's something not right with this guy! I don't think he's human!"

"Hmmmm." Justine then raises her own visor, revealing an identical golden eye and eyepatch combo, though this time reversed. Were these girls twins? "There does indeed to be something peculiar about this Templar's aura. Interesting."

"Interesting, he's in our way!" Caroline frowns. "Come on! Whip a spell out and let's just blow these guys away!"

"That is a poorly advised move." Justine looks to you, Havel, and then Morgan. "Even though chances of success are high, the political fallout may be severe."

"Bah, that's for the Archmages to worry about! We got our orders!" Caroline shoots back.

It was nice to see these Mana Knights arguing with each other rather than you or Havel, but this was starting to get tiresome. The Codex suggested that matters that could not be resolved through words would be resolved by the sword. But perhaps...

You reach your arms out towards the two Mana Knights...

And pat them both on their near identical heads.

"W-W-W-W-WHAAAAAAT!??!" Caroline yelps as she immediately leaps away, her face beet red as she draws her baton and holds it in trembling hands. "Pervert! Deviant! Unaccept- JUSTINE!?!"

Justine doesn't make any sort of defensive move at all. She just stands there, taking your headpats like a champ. She doesn't make eye contact, but you can see her cheeks were a nice, bright pink.

"What are you doing, Justine!?!" Caroline squeaks, tugging at her sister's arm.

"It's clearly not a hostile move, so logically there's no reason to try and defend against it." Justine reasons.

"NOT HOSTILE?!" Caroline's jaw drops as she looks at her sister and then to you. "He's... he's... VIOLATING YOU!"

You raise your free hand again, offering her to give her more headpats. No reason to give her sister an unfair share.

"D-drop dead!" Caroline grunts.

Meanwhile, Havel's armor shake and shudders as he laughs at the sheer lunacy he's witnessing.

And you're not sure why, but you feel three jealous glares drilling into your back, as well. You don't dare turn to see how Morgan, Nino, and Romulus are reacting.

"F-fine! You win this time!" Caroline grits her teeth as she finally manages to pull Justine away. She points her baton as menacingly as she can, her face still crimson. "B-but we'll be back! That's a promise!"

"Our apologies for the convenience." Justine says politely as the two Mana Knights make their escape.

Well, it looked like it worked.

"If I didn't witness that myself, I'd think that you used foul sorcery on their minds!" Havel laughs as he slaps you on the back, his gauntlet ringing loudly against your armor. "Unorthodox, but effective! Perhaps this should be written in the Codex!"

You put a finger up to your "lips" to give the universal gesture for silence. You would prefer if this were kept quiet.

"Ah yes, a secret weapon for our own use, eh?" Havel chortles. "I do have to thank you, through, Templar. Those two rascals constantly harass the monastery. At least I know of a way to ward them off now!"

You nod in agreement.

"Hey." Morgan taps you on the shoulder, a dour look on her face. "You gonna apologize to her?"

You cock your head in curiosity.

"You big meanie!" Nino pouts. "Giving Justine and Caroline headpats and not me!"

Even Romulus growls, apparently not happy at this turn of events.

So you acquiesce and give the mage and pup a good headpatting too. Nino giggles and Romulus purrs happily. All the while, Morgan looks on.

You offer a hand to Morgan. Perhaps she was feeling a bit left out.

"Okay, but only one." Morgan grunts, still trying to maintain an air of seriousness.

You pat her head exactly once. Morgan's cheeks redden a bit, but she's just able to maintain her composure.

"J-jeez, I don't know what everybody was freaking out about..." Morgan grumbles completely unconvincingly.

"Well, I suppose that's enough merriment for the day." Havel motions for the nearby serfs to start closing the gates. "It's starting to get rather late, so how about we have supper and continue this all tomorrow? You two are free to pick any room in the monastery. We're rather short on luxuries, but our lodgings will keep you warm and dry.

"That's all I can ask." Morgan grins.

"I think I'll head back to the library." Nino nods. "It's pretty cozy in there, anyways!"

From a practicality standpoint, long hair isn't really suited to being kept under a helmet for extended periods, for hygiene if nothing else. How we actually maintain our hair while also never removing the helmet is another question entirely.

It was a rather uneventful dinner, though you , Morgan and Nino were regaled with a few old war stories of his. One of the many northern campaigns against the Orcs, or his efforts in establishing and maintaining the fortress monastery. Soon enough, a loud yawn from Nino was enough to signify that it was time for rest. Morgan volunteered to carry Nino back to her little next of books in the library, while you and Romulus head to your quarters.

It was just as spartan as you expected. Nothing more than a small wooden table, chair, and bed. The bare necessities. Romulus runs in, walking around in circles as he tries to familiarize himself with his surroundings.

Perhaps now was the time to impart some training on him. After all, the best time to train or dog or wolf was when it was young, to better retain their behaviors.

ATTACK BEAST: Grow large and strong, with an aggressive demeanor. Focuses on assaulting and tearing apart its enemies with tooth and claw. Good for sheer offense.

PREDATOR: Stealthy and speedy. While not as large or powerful as an attack beast, Predators focus on powerful senses to stalk prey, and then sneaking up on them for lethal ambushes. Often make good scouts.

MEMBER OF THE PACK: Brains over brawn. Will focus on supporting and defending its packmates. Can be trained to wear armor and use basic items to both support and attack. Makes a very flexible asset to any party.

Perhaps you could train this pup to eventually start wearing armor and carry weapons and items. He would become a very valuable asset indeed. You've heard that Direwolves were intelligent enough to be trained in such ways. And so you get to work...

---

The next morning, you meet the others in the dining hall, where breakfast was being served. It was simple eggs with ham, but that was more than enough for any morning. You set a plate of ham and sausages down for Romulus, who greedily began gobbling them up as fast as possible.

Morgan naturally was eating in a fairly civil way, while Nino just wolfed her food down with reckless abandon.

"So, I understand you intend to journey out into the Frontier to hunt the various beasts that prey on us?" Havel speaks up as he forks some eggs into his helmet.

You nod. That was your duty, after all.

"Hrrrm, you'll probably need a healer then." Havel grunts. "It's dangerous out there, and if you can't find a proper healer, even the most trivial of wounds may end up being fatal."

You look around the hall. Surely there were clerics here that could assist you?

"Unfortunately, we have no battle priestesses present at the moment." Havel sighs. "Until the current northern campaign ceases, you cannot expect much support from outside."

"Well, can't you just ask for a priestess from the Church?" Nino asks, her mouth still full of ham. "There's priestesses everywhere in the city!"

"Except they're all part of the Church of Sol." Morgan reminds her. "Last I checked, they and the Black Templars still don't get along too well."

"That is true." Havel confirms. "We can't expect any assistance from the Church. However, there is one priestess I know that may be willing to help you, though the term 'priestess' is a... generous term to describe her."

You glance at Havel. It sounded like there was a catch.

"So, can we meet her at the Church?" Morgan asks.

"No, the nearest tavern, i suspect." Havel responds.

"Erm..." Morgan pauses.

You put a reassuring hand on Nino's shoulder. You've already defeated them once, and you can do it again.

"Yeah, you'll be there for us!" Nino smiles.

"And after how he just plain humiliated them, I don't think those twins are going to be showing their faces any time soon." Morgan grins.

But you're still not satisfied. You point to Nino again.

"Errr..." Nino hesitates, not quite sure what you're trying to communicate.

"I think he wants to know why they're after you." Morgan conveys. "I actually sort of want to know as well."

"Ah, well..." Nino bites her lip. "It's just that, even though I'm a fully licensed mage, those mean old farts at the Tower don't want me to adventure! They just wanna keep me locked up in there like some sort of guinea pig!"

"That's horrible!" Morgan gasps. "Why?"

"W-well, I guess it's because I graduated so young, so I guess I have a lot of magic potential?" Nino frowns. "But I don't care about any of that stuff. I came out here because I wanted to explore the unknown! Make my own magical discoveries rather than reading about other peoples!"

"I suppose that's understandable." Morgan nods.

You nod as well. You had to admit you had strong feelings of wanderlust in your younger years as well. Perhaps some adventuring would do her some good.

"All right, let's get going then." Morgan says.

The three of you head back to Eisenwand proper, diving into the crowded streets towards one of the taverns Havel had directed you to. Morgan keeps an eye on Romulus while Nino stays close to your side, her nose buried in a book she had apparently pilfered from the library.

"What? I just borrowed it!" Nino says when she realizes you're staring at her. "I'll bring it back!"

You point to the book, wondering what it was.

"Oh, it's an account of the Elven Wars!" Nino says happily. "It's absolutely fascinating reading it from the viewpoint of Templar scholars! It's completely different from accounts in the Church and Tower!"

You nod. The other orders never really saw eye to eye with the Templars. Especially the Church.

"I mean, all the Church books paint your founders as traitors that broke off from the Church and performed horrible deeds! But in here, you're saying that everything you did was for the good of Sol! You all see yourselves as heroes, huh?"

You shake your head and point to the book again. Not once in that book did the Templar scholars ever refer to themselves or their comrades as "heroes". Simply warriors carrying out their duty.

"O-oh, guess I kinda got carried away there." Nino chuckles. "But still, burning down an entire Elven Moon Forest? I know the war between the humans and elves got really nasty by then, but isn't that going a little overboard?"

You shrug and pat the Templar icon on your chest. A black and white depiction of the Sun. The Founders did what they had to do, and you point to the later pages, where, the the Burning brought a definitive end to the Elven Wars.

"I suppose you're right." Nino nods. "Still, the guys at the Church don't seem too proud of it."

"Well yeah, they're all pretty stuck up, in my opinion." Morgan shrugs. "And, I have to admit, I don't care much for the elves, either. They're also pretty stuck up, in their own special way."

You nod as you eye the people walking past. Nobody was deliberately avoiding you, but you did not people giving you a rather wide berth. The occasional Elf in the crowd shot you a poisonous look, but otherwise did nothing like the cowards they were.

Finally, you reach the tavern. It looked to be a rather run down lot. However, you enter without hesitation.

And the inside was almost completely empty. Not surprising, given the early hour. However, that made finding your quarry all the much easier. There, in the back corner, you could see a dark haired cleric sitting at a table, which was quickly filling up with empty ale mugs. Her face was one of a woman who had seen quite a lot in her life, not to mention a severe lack of sleep. She looked gaunt and generally unpleasant.

"Definitely promising." Morgan remarks sarcastically.

You poke her in the shoulder to quiet her as you walk over to the cleric, Naru Yuzuha. Havel had told you that she had something of a falling out with the Church. She wasn't outright excommunicated, but it was pretty clear she didn't see eye to eye with the Church leadership, which was why she was trying to scratch by a living as a freelance healer. He didn't know what event put her in these circumstances, and you suspect not many other people did, either.

"Hey, look, I don't have the money on me, okay?" Naru slurs. "Just give me a few more days-"

"We're not debt collectors." Morgan informs her.

"Oh thank god." Naru slumps down in her seat in relief. "Dodged an arrow there."

"We heard that you were looking for an adventuring party to join with." Morgan narrows her eyes. "That is, if you can perform the role of a healer."

"Last I checked, yeah." Naru nods as she tries to take a swig of ale before realizing the mug was already empty. "But I don't for free, and I charge by the heal."

"You can't be serious." Morgan frowns.

"Hey, if you're coming to me, then it means you're practically out of options." Naru shrugs. "Take it or leave it."

"This is such a waste of time." Morgan sighs and turns to you. "She's obviously trying to scam us."

You tap your finger sternly on the table to get her attention, and then point to yourself, Morgan, Nino, and Naru herself and then hold up four fingers, signifying an even share.

"Ha, that's real funny. Trying to bargain with me?" Naru cracks a smile.

You then look around the empty tavern. Didn't seem like there was anybody lining up for her services.

"Fine, fine, party share!" Naru groans as she breaks. "But I get first dibs on loot. Deal?"

"I think that's fair!" Nino butts in.

"Who's the squirt?" Naru grumbles.

"I'm Nino!" Your mage introduces herself happily. "It's nice to meet you!"

"So how much are these guys paying you to go out with them?" Naru raises an eyebrow.

"I'm not interested in the money!" Nino shakes her head. "I just want to go out for the adventure!"

Naru gives Nino a hard stare for what seems to be a very long time, as if trying get a measure of her character.

"You know what. Maybe I will tag along with you guys, if only to make sure the squirt here doesn't get into the trouble." Naru sighs. "So when are we leaving?"

"Once you're sober." Morgan tuts.

"I am so sober." Naru insists.

"I can smell the alcohol off you from the next town over." Morgan grunts.
