Acer hangs his head. “At this point Goku’s dad is going to end up a Super Saiyan somehow.”

Raditz places his hand on his chin, looking up curiously, then shakes his head letting out a low “Nah.” He then turns to Nappa with a grin across his face. “You know, for all our differences... can’t say I’m anything but glad for you, Nappa.”

“Is that so?” the tall, bald Saiyan grunts out.

“I’ve been wanting a proper rematch some time, when you got it the form too.” Raditz states. “What do you say?”

“...Heh, I just might put you up to that.”

“I’ll do that on my own time.” Nappa states. “I still don’t much care for this planet. I get you guys have it all nice and cozy out here, but this isn’t for me.”

“Suit yourself.” Raditz states. “I am serious about that rematch though.”

Goku puts his hands behind his head, Peppa mimicking him. “Mind if I tag along? Sounds like you guys might have a fun battle.”

You raise a finger. “Ah-ah! You’re sticking with me today, monkey boy.”

“Huh? Got something going on, Maple?”

“...It’s been a year? For the kids? Peppa and Gohan are due a birthday party, aren’t they?”

Your daughter’s eyes light up with glee, accentuated by her tealish irises. Goku chuckles out his reply, “Haha! Guess they are. Well, we better not delay!”

And a quick teleport away, you’re back at Capsule Corp, Gohan running to greet his sister again, Pantea not far behind him, giving a mixed look of surprise and slight dread as she sees Peppa’s mastery of Super Saiyan too. Your kids hug and start catching up, the purple-haired girl looking up at you and commenting in a low tone, “Gonna be even harder to catch up now. Dang...”

“Hey, you could tag along with Yamcha for his turn.” Goku tells the girl.

But before you can butt in, you hear Bulma’s voice on your Scouter. “Maple, can you come here for a bit?”

“Sure thing, be riiiight there.” you respond, first turning to Pantea and kneeling down to her, quietly telling the girl, “Hey now, you’ve got your old man’s strength, and your mom’s smarts. You’ll catch up in no time, kiddo. If anyone’s gonna outdo a Super Saiyan, it’s someone with smarts like this.” You emphasize your statement with a light poke to the head.

She smiles softly at you. “Thanks.”

You nod, then head off to Bulma’s lab... noticing her having made a makeshift barricade guarding her workbench, Gato holding Number 19‘s detatched head with several cables connected to it and her now decapitated body, the two pirate robot heads mumbling to each other. “...Do I want to ask?”

“I’ve taken precautions.” Bulma replies, looking over data on her computer. “Her mind may be offline, but all her energy weapons are fully operational. This amount of material is enough to guard me against any accidental activations. The good news is, with her head removed she can’t access the rest of her body. The bad news, if she wakes up, she still has those eye beams.”

“So... what do you need me for?” you question, pouting slightly. “Still have some other things to grumble at me?”

Bulma turns her head. “Didn’t mean to snap at you. Just... this is kinda eating at my mind. Don’t really want to get too distracted from this, we can only afford to replace about half the stuff in this house.” she states in a strained voice you can tell she attempted to make sound humorous, but just comes off as very tired. The coffee mugs at her desk certainly tell a story on their own. “I need your help with two things. First, I’ve gotten a good amount of data recovered and I need a second opinion. You fought her first, so you might be able to give me some clues into this. Second... well, after you look this over, I kinda need someone here with me that can reason with her if we... turn her back on.”

She... takes longer than she seems to realize to answer you. “Since uh... well... how long has it been since this all started?”

You hang your head. “Bulmaaaaa...”

“Well what do you want me to do, just leave a potentially dangerous Andr- ...well she has a soul, so maybe she’s a Cyborg?”

You float over to her and place your hand on her forehead, breathing out “Samma Kammant.” Her eyes seem to widen a bit, but you still help her up. “Look, we can talk about turning her back on when you’ve got a clear head. Get some rest, we’ll handle this after. I’ll look over the data and keep Towa or Churai or... gods, whoever she wants to throw out here away from your lab.”

Bulma almost pouts at you, but starts to head towards the door. “All right... ugh. It’ll be a quick nap though.”

“Proper rest, Bulma.” you state, materializing a lab coat onto yourself and sitting in Bulma’s chair. You telepathically tell Goku that you need a minute, both to look over this and to get the kids’ birthday gifts thought up. Well well, what do you have here...? Things from her memory banks, a few saved files of her data. There’s a more recent file, dated when you first encountered her, but also a much earlier one... years earlier. But curiously there’s a file that seems to be labeled “Emergency.” You should make this quick...

You lean back in Bulma’s chair. Whatever tried to shut her down... was it trying to access her bomb? Oh gods... they tried to use her to as a kamikaze weapon? You run your fingers through your hair as you start to take in all of this. What... what stopped the data wipe? And what caused the remote detonation to fail? You check her most recent memory files...

Well, it’s data starting with your fight with her. Video files, Ki analysis, strategic combat data, dodging... subroutines? Ah, because of the Ki absorbing priority... hah, oh wow and there’s her fight with Vegeta. Damn, even with her emotional parameters shut down she gave Vegeta a bit of talkback. She gets to the fight with your friends... well, things progress about how you remember. Hmn... wait, there seemed to be an attempt at accessing data in her systems that she normally can’t, during her talk with Chiaotzu. It all comes to an end suddenly... she didn’t even see the person that shut her down.

You stand, looking at 19‘s head. She might not even be here right now if it weren’t for the glitch in the data wipe. Maybe... she caused it intentionally? Or maybe you’re just trying to be hopeful and this was part of Gero’s shoddy programming. Either way... well, what do you do with her, Maple?

And 19‘s bomb has been removed... can you let her be for a while? ...Guarding a killer robot that tried to drain your life energy just a couple days ago, gods you live a strange life. But this isn’t even the strangest thing you’ve been up to this week.

You put your hands in the pockets of your lab coat. “Well 19... I still have to take care of my kids. Gato, please, please, please, moment anything comes up, even the slightest bit of trouble, alert me. Alert EVERYONE.”

The robot gives you a thumb’s up. “I SHALL SING A SONG!”

The robot flexes. “ONE OF MISS PANTEA’S FAVORITES!”

“...Whatever works.” you sigh out. You leave the lab, giving one last look to Number 19. She’ll... she’ll be fine. For now, you’ve got another duty to attend to: Gohan and Peppa’s birthday party!

Something that's channeled via emotions, maybe? Saiyans have a lot of their hidden potential connected to their state of mind and emotional state. Any magic that can be amplified or changed by that is likely to be much greater in effect for a hybrid Saiyan.

You’ve got some good ideas. So, a trip to Melchior’s some time should be good for getting them some new weapons; they’ve shown significant amounts of improvement, after all, and they can handle some more serious things. You can also get them some new outfits... aha! Goku’s old outfit for Gohan, your old red tunic for Peppa? Ah, but you should get Gohan some games and books, some things he likes... eh, you can recruit Pantea for some help in that. Something that’ll surprise the boy. First thing’s first though, you contact Goku to see what he’s planning.

‘Well, I think we should give them a big dinner!’ your husband’s voice echoes in your mind. ‘Peppa wants to try this really spicy curry rice she saw her classmate have a while back.’

‘Okay, restaurant dinner, then presents... what’re you planning on giving them?’

‘Well... dunno if I should give Peppa the Power Pole yet. Wanna save it for their birthday later this year.’

...Sooo, scratch giving her a weapon replacement. Maybe enhance her regular weapon though? Hrmn. Well, first thing’s first, you and Pantea chat a bit to get some ideas on what games to buy Gohan. You sneak off with her for a moment to do some shopping, Gohan and Peppa thankfully occupied with their dad.

“Okay so we’ve gone through Super Metroid, let’s see... Gohan might wanna try his hand at Castlevania next. Then again a good ol’ RPG might be a decent bet... I’ve got the Final Fantasy games, buuuut I’m sure he’d get a kick out of Zelda... ooh, Secret of Mana! Ah, and there’s Breath of Fire! Also... he’s been blitzing through the history books in our study... could try getting him something related to that?”

“You’re gonna have to point these out for me, Pantea. But I could definitely pick out some history books for him. Peppa rarely mentions any of the games you two play though...”

“Peppa watches us more often than not. Usually she’s off just having fun with the animals or training herself.” The purple-haired girl glances up at you. “I’m sure that doesn’t come as a surprise to you.”

You laugh. “A lot like her dad.”

The two of you approach a mall, you both looking around at the chillingly empty streets. Some stores are still open, but others have been closed up or outright abandoned. Pantea looks down briefly. “Maple. Do... you guys really think you can beat that Ozotto jerk?”

“So did mom.” Pantea states with a laugh. She looks around the mall again, snapping her fingers in frustration as she notices a few electronics stores closed. “Hope you’re right, Maple... And gah, that’s closed down too? Guess we’ll have to stop by Zetto Game and hope they’re still open. They’re just about ALWAYS open.”

You keep walking with her, coming across a shop with an entrance shaped like a large “Z,” to the girl’s delight still staffed. “You know, speaking of Goku and Bulma... well, what do you think of Trunks? And Bra?”

“Well, on one hand I’m kinda halfway between jealousy and admiration of them, they’re so cool and strong and brave, but... at the same time I always feel bad for them every time I think of them, for what they went through. At least Trunks had his brother and mom and some other folks, but... Bra didn’t really have anyone except mom until she ended caught in our mess. She lost her mentor and best friend, she never knew her dad... though I guess she IS catching up a bit in a way, isn’t she?” Pantea looks at you with mild concern. “You... sure she’s doing okay in there with him? I don’t know how anyone could stand being with a guy whose volume options are ‘yelling angrily’ and ‘yelling VERY angrily’ for a whole year.”
You giggle softly. “I’m sure your big sis is doing fine. She seems to like you quite a bit, you know.”

Pantea blushes slightly and smiles. “She’s just so cool... wish I’m even half as cool as her when I grow up.”

“I know you’ll be a smart, brave young lady some day.” you state with confidence. Just... hope she doesn’t have to go through what her future self did.

The girl walks in to the store after stating, “Know Bra has a job to do and everything, but... once this is all over, she should at least stay for the celebration party.” Pantea ends up getting a whole stack of games for Gohan, a few of them even having some recognizable robots on their covers, then takes you towards a bookstore. You spot several books on Earth history, ranging from the in-depth and several centimeter thick tomes to smaller picture books with fanciful covers. You get the boy a few closer to the ones you used to read back when you first arrived on Earth, now with updated volumes.

The two of you arrive back at Capsule Corp, Bulma having woken up again and greeting you with a teasing, “Somebody’s spoiling those kids.”

“Whaaaat, me? Spoiling my darling, sweet, precious Gohan and adorable, lovable, sweetie pie Peppa? I would never.” you respond, sticking your tongue out, Pantea rolling her eyes at the both of you. “You sure you got enough sleep? It’s only been a few hours.”

She laughs out loud. “I’m fine, Maple. This is nothing compared to when I wrote my first thesis paper.” Bulma gives a brief glance towards her lab. “...You wanna wait until after the kids have had their party for us to talk about 19?”

“Nah, we can do this now.” you comment, Clothes Beaming your lab coat back on, walking back to the lab with Bulma, Pantea following with. “I looked over the data.”

“I’ve been trying to wrap my head around what happened with it ever since I discovered it. It’s a stroke of luck for us, but it’s puzzling... why did that glitch happen? With the bomb removed, it can’t happen again, but there’s just something strange with all this...”

“Tell me about it. I’ve had a few theories on it. It could be Gero’s shoddy programming, or he just never had a chance to test this properly. But maybe she did it to herself.”

“...Maybe it was a logical paradox?” Pantea speculates.

You and Bulma look to each other. “I mean... couldn’t rule it out. Contradiction with her self-preservation protocols and a command to self-detonate.”

“Well she is a robot, right? Nearly 100% mechanical?” the girl questions again. “Gohan and I have accidentally made Gato freeze up with some logical paradoxes.”

Bulma glares at her daughter for a moment, repeating “‘Accidentally.’”

“...Mostly accidental! And you fixed him up really quick!” she adds in mild protest.

Bulma rubs her forehead. “That could explain things... now the question is, do we wake her up and ask her? She could end up still stuck in that loop, or she could...”

Bulma walks over to her computer, hunching slightly to make sure she’s completely covered, Pantea following behind her. Bulma gulps, readying herself. “Be on your guard, Maple.”

You... bring out the Spirit Bits and form a barrier around yourself, just in case. “Ready.”

There’s a tense few seconds as Bulma furiously types away on her keyboard. “She’ll be online in... 3... 2... 1.”

Number 19‘s eyes open slowly, a brief red flash shining from them before disappearing. You take a deep breath. “Rise and shine, 19.”

She is silent, eyes darting around the room, first noticing her body, then the fact that her head is being held by a robot, then darts to Bulma’s workbench, your friend ducking behind her barrier as quickly as she can. 19‘s eyes then lock on to you, a blank, silent stare.

“...Ssssso, hey, now that you-”

“Why do I still function?”

You put your hands in your labcoat pockets, letting out a brief laugh. “I was hoping you could answer that for us...”

Bulma cautiously motions for you to come over to her, you hovering in midair and looking over the screen again. “It appears to have happened during an attempt to wipe your data. So it wasn’t us.”

19‘s eyes are locked on to you as you move. “...It should not have failed.”

19 is silent. Pantea sneaks behind her, outside her line of sight. “You know, it wouldn’t even make sense. If somebody could just shut you down or cause that glitch so easily, why wait until then to do it.”

“You know... maybe Senbei could help. Arale can keep you occupied while he looks into why you’re still here.” you comment with a sly smirk. Bulma’s eyes are filled with terror as you glance back at her, mouthing “are you crazy” at you. You reassure her that it’s a bluff.

“Well then spill the beans. What do you think caused this?”

“...My wellbeing is secondary to our mission.” she comments. “I should have wiped my data and self-destructed.”

Your brow furls slightly. “That’s not really an answer. If you’re trying to stall and run out of batteries or something, it’s not gonna work. Can you like... at least just tell us what your mission was?”

The pale android looks away from you. Seems she’s... trying to find something? After a brief moment of silence, she answers you. “It has been accomplished. The Super Monster has been revived.”

Of course it was Ozotto. You pinch the ridge of your nose. “Gods... is that why you were trying to gather energy?”

“It is odd that he has not destroyed you all yet.” 19 comments.

“He’s decided to draw this out and host a tournament.” you respond, feeling like you want to slam your head against a wall. Damn it has Towa been playing you the entire time? “I’m gonna assume you’re not going to play nice with us if we reattach your head, are you?”

“I am under no obligation to help you.” she states bluntly. “My purpose has been fulfilled. I do not need to assist Ozotto in any regard, even if he has stalled the inevitable.”

Pantea scratches her head, then her eyes shoot wide open. “Maple, wait! Remember when you were resting here? And Ozotto contacted you?”

She gains a confident smile, then points at the decapitated android, declaring, “19! The reason you still function is because of Ozotto!”

Bulma finally pokes her head up out of the barrier she’s made around her work bench, tilting it at her daughter. “...What?”

“Explain your reasoning.” 19 requests.

“Well, Ozotto has that mass telepathy thing he was doing, contacting people all over the world.” she starts, standing up straight proudly. “If he was somehow able to contact 19, then he might have interfered with her self-destruct! Intentionally, accidentally, doesn’t matter which.”

Bulma looks at her daughter with a frown. “Sweetie... 19 is nearly completely mechanical. How can he read a machine’s mind?”

She raises a finger in protest. “Nearly being the key word here, mom. 19, you do have a soul, don’t you?”

The pale android attempts to look in Pantea’s direction, hampered by Gato still holding her head in his hands. “...Yes.”

“There’s still something for him to TRY to look into. And since you were fighting with everyone, he had to have noticed something about you.” the purple-haired girl explains. “Therefore, in a sense, Ozotto saved you from self-termination.”

19 seems to take a moment to process all this in. Bulma rubs her head contemplatively. “I mean... it does match up, timing-wise.”

“What do you know about Ozotto, 19?” you ask, smiling as Pantea proudly looks to her mother.

“The Super Monster is powerful enough to destroy all of you. I will not reveal more than that to you.” she returns bluntly, eyes focused on you.

You sigh softly. “Of course you won’t... then can you at least tell me one thing? Why do you look like Chiaotzu’s wife?”

Her blank expression becomes one of true confusion. “...Pardon?”

“The doll he had when he was the Mifan Emperor! Come on, spill it! Did Gero build you like that intentionally?”

The poor android is at a loss for words. “...What?”

“What’s her name... Ran Fan? No, no... ah, Ran Ran!”

“Gero designed me on his own specifications. I do not believe he based me on any wife doll... doll...” She goes silent, her expression returning to a blank stare. “...If you insist on keeping me active, I have a request to make of you.”

She attempts to look at Pantea again, then moves her eyes to Bulma. “No. That will not be necessary.”

You teleport away, finally meeting Goku again, Gohan and Peppa by him. “Hey Maple! Is it time?” your husband asks, the kids looking up at you gleefully.

You nod. “Who’s ready for a birthday party?”

The estatic, joyful shrieking is all the answer you need.

Acer and Chi-chi join you with Izzy as you make this more of a family dinner, Chi-chi opting to try a more formal dress, her daughter mirroring her mother, while your brother sticks to more casual attire. You also promise the kids that they’ll open presents back at Capsule Corp. Bulma needs to really rest up, so it’d be nice to give her a bit of peace and quiet while you can.

“So... you’re older than me now...?” Izzy asks her cousins, resting her chin on her hands.

Peppa nods after finishing a bowl of Curry Rice, her fifth since the dinner started. “Mhmm! I mean... technically?”

“This IS a birthday.” your neice notes, then glances at her mom and dad. “...I’m supposed to be the bigger one.”

“Might be a bit much for you, kid.” your brother comments, counting the dishes Goku stuffs his face with. “Hyperbolic Time Chamber was pretty tough on me and Maple back when we were closer to your age.”

“Gohan and Peppa managed it.” she grumbles.

“They’ve also wanted to train themselves.” Acer tells her. “Gohan and Peppa were ready for it.”

Izzy places her chin on the table, grumbling lowly, her mother elbowing her and softly reminding her to sit up straight.

Izzy lifts her head and bashfully goes back to her food. Chi-chi gives you a curious look. “What if she doesn’t?”

“I’m not saying she has to. Gohan and Peppa agreed to this themselves. If Izzy doesn’t really want to become a fighter... well, let her do that too. It’s up to her.”

Izzy seems to sink back a bit, poking her food with her chopsticks. Peppa looks to her and asks, “You gonna finish?”

“Hey, you got your own food sweetie.” you say with a laugh, Goku chuckling with you after gulping down another large bite of food. “You enjoying it?”

“YEAH!” she tells you joyfully. “Maybe could be a little spicier, but it’s really really good!”

...That’s one of the spiciest things on the menu. As the girl gets another bowl, you politely ask her for a taste of it, to see what she means. The bite of the curry rice enters your mouth, and for a moment, time seems to slow. You feel a cold sweat come across your face. Goku and Acer simultaneously ask, “Maple... you okay?”

In a pained, raspy voice, you breathe out, “Water... milk... ice... hurry!”

Peppa, completely oblivious to your request, asks you, “It’s good, right mom?”

Not exactly an easy thing to do. Kaio-ken multiplies your strength by in essence overclocking your Ki. Telekinesis isn't dramatically different from your normal Ki, it already boosts your magic when you use it normally, and while possible, trying to do it with your life energy is exceedingly dangerous and could kill you if you aren't extremely careful.

Your eyes finally stop watering quite a while later, the stinging, burning sensation finally getting to tolerable levels. Goku tries to laugh it off, saying she would always want to try the spiciest foods she could during their meals. But even he seemed to not really be up for trying some himself.

You return to Capsule Corp, Bulma, Pantea, and Yamcha greeting you, with, to your surprise, Chuu Lee showing up with Videl and her family as well. Your former student actually has a nice little gift for the two of them; a pair of matching headbands, each with the image of a bird in flight on them.

After opening the presents you get them, Gohan getting his games and books, Peppa receiving a cute little dress from the Briefs, and you presenting them their outfits; Peppa getting a red tunic similar to the one you used to wear, while Gohan gets an outfit much like the one his dad wore when you first met him. The boy seems to really like the getup.

And now comes their final gifts. A trip to Melchior’s to get their weapons some upgrades, and Magic. Ah, but even with the few days you have, you can’t exactly get them both of those things. Gonna have to save one for their actual birthday...

You look to your kids and smile softly. “Okay, Gohan, Peppa, you two have one last present, and a promise of a present later in the year.” The two of them look to you attentively, Videl looking over some of the toys Peppa got as Pantea comments to Gohan on some of the games he received. “We’ll be going over to Melchior’s tomorrow, and later this year you two will learn a new spell. Something your dad and I are going to work hard on, something that fits the both of you.”

Peppa’s gleeful expression on the promises contrast her brother’s more subdued but appreciative reaction. “What kind of magic is it?”

“That’ll be a surprise. But for now, how’s a new staff and sword sound?”

“YEAAAAH!” your daughter shouts, tail swaying happily.

The following day, with Bulma opting to try and talk with 19 some more on Ozotto, you and Goku make a trip to Melchior’s with the kids. The old hermit walks out to greet you all as you arrive. “It has been quite a while since we last met. Mmn, but I figured that you would be here again. There isn’t much I can do for the Power Pole aside from give it its ornamentation back, and your sword is near the limits of my craft, especially with the materials I have available.”

“Actually, it’s not about us, it’s for Peppa and Gohan.” Goku explains. “They’ve been training, practicing, and getting stronger and more skilled... we think it’s time they got some proper upgrades themselves. Plus you’re the best at this!”

He raises his brows in surprise, but appreciation. “You are too kind, Son Goku. So... a sword for the boy, a staff for the girl?”

“Unless you two have any objections?”

“Ooh! Ooh! Can my new staff like... be enhanced channel Ki or magic into the tip or something?” Peppa requests, pulling out her practice Power Pole.

“Well... I would like a sword like mom’s. But something you think I could handle. What do you suggest?”

Melchior strokes his beard contemplatively, thinking over the requests. “Hmmn... your natural hair is still of a redder tint, is it not, my boy?” Gohan nods. “Then I have something I could work with. And as for your request, young miss... what did you have in mind, exactly?”

“Something that can like... spin something really, really fast! I’ve been training in Wind Magic, and it’s given me some ideas...”

Melchior laughs. “I might be able to work with that, too.” The old man then approaches you and Goku. “Though... would you two prefer me to use what materials I have available in making these, or would you be willing to acquire some extra ones for me?”

“What might this all look like?” Gohan asks.

“Mm, the Rainbow Shell Maple has seen before. The Katchin Ring is a small ring made out of a black metal, far heavier than it looks. The Sun Stone can actually hold energy inside it, was used mostly to collect solar energy, so it’ll shine brilliantly even in darkness. Dreamstone is a crimson red ore that has an unmistakable shine to it. These materials may still be on Earth, and the best chance to find them would be off in those ruins.”

That makes sense. Although... “Saaaay, Gohan, Peppa, would you two be opposed to getting these things yourselves?”

Your daughter’s eyes light up. “You mean go on a real adventure? On our own?”

“I dunno Maple, the kids can handle themselves.” Goku comments, ruffling their blonde hair.

You both notice a strong Ki signature suddenly appear... near the Lookout. Aha, two of them. And both of them feel familiar. The signatures lower quite a bit after the sudden surge. Guess Bra and Vegeta are done. Ah, right! “Oh, also, Melchior! A young woman is probably come by pretty soon, Bra. She has a sword you might be interested in looking at.”

“Hmm... of course, of course.”

As long as he never meets Goku he'll be fine. I say let's let them take Vegeta and Nappa off-world, in-quest we have no reason to NOT let him. But can we gift Nappa an improved Tuffle scouter (with communication enabled) as a going super saiyan present? I'd say the same for Vegeta, but he would of course say no. Nappa would appreciate one, being a general and all, and having the scouter detect non-organic power levels is a great strategic advantage.
