"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

The light fades for Lieutenant 'Prince'. You have faced death before, on a dozen battlefields and more. But not like this. You were so cold, at your feet the infinity of nothingness... or Below.

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
Following the fall of the Neumunster city of Sarsburg several weeks ago, your Employer has sent his unholy host spread throughout the entirety of the western and northern reaches of the Neumunster Nation. While the main part of the Company and the undead went west to Oxenfurt Bridge, you were tasked with the seizure of the northern town of Kresden.

You've done that. And better yet you've taken it almost entirely intact, protecting both buildings and inhabitants alike from the violence (sort of) and the unsavoury attentions of your own reinforcements (mostly). And now the whole of what's left of Northern Nuemunster stretches before you undefended. Your forces have struck out all across Northern Neumunster. Sword, fire and fang all declare the same truth. This land belongs to the Necromancer now.

But the Free Alliance is not done yet. A final roll of the dice, all their might mustered into one army on one front. Already they have battered the Wild and bloodied the nose of the Warlord. If they can break the Necromancer before winter sets in.... there may still be a Free Realm left to defend come spring.

The Free Alliance Encampment, No More than a Days March from Kresden

The Paladin half-turned to pass his gauntlets to his ever attentive page, Michael, but there was no one there. He gave a sad sigh, he keeps forgetting that young Michael died at Oxenfurt Bridge weeks ago.

”Black Company?” One the Neumunster officers speaks up from the crowd gathered around the War Council. ”We showed them our steel at Oxenfurt Bridge and they scurried away like dogs!” Several other officers speak up in agreement, but not all are so overconfident.

”In Kresden province it’s a different story. This ‘Dark Prince’ of theirs seized the town overnight. He leads an elite unit, the 7th Kriegstrom. There was a full complement of Grenn stationed there, and we’ve had no word from the others in the region, bar what panicked refugees can tell us.” Liuetenant Leopold rubs his jaw as he looks at the displayed map. ”You’d think they were devils of Below from the way they speak.”

”They say he drinks the blood of his enemies, and his own men if he’s hungry enough.” The Knight scoffs. ”They say he has a Dragon.”

”Men say many foolish things short-ears, but I am afraid that last one is true.” The Sniper grimaces from his spot in the corner, elven eyes lazily regarding the Chevalisse nobelman. ”The Dragon fights for them, our scouts report that the XII Legion remnants and a whole contingent of our own Helenwood Arbalests were annihilated by it at Manzer Pass. No coincidence it chose that spot.”

”It matches up with what Herman dan Jorst’s spy has told us. He’s must be some right bastard, no doubt.” The Sergeant rubbed his nose, it was getting colder each day outside. ”He still bleeds though.”

”We can expect precious little more on that front, our turncoat has not made contact with me in some time. The mission to rescue His Grace may have left them exposed. This Prince does not strike me as the forgiving sort..” The speaker Helmer dan Jorst, leader of the Northern Resistance, was an unassuming man. He’d retired twice now, the last thing he was in this for was the glory. ”The Heir-Apparent… I fear he will soon suffer the fate of his late-grandather…”

A pained groan erupts from almost every man of Neumunster birth. The Imperial Family was almost worshipped, the boy was the last direct descendant of Skarling Kingbreaker. Other claimants existed, but their bloodline was questionable or remote. Even if the Free Alliance was victorious against the Necromancer, Neumunster might be wracked with civil war in the aftermath.

”I see.” The Knight is not so boastful now. ”… well, I would be remiss if I did not confess that I had always wanted to test the mettle of our Archangels against a Dragon.”

”Get him close to the ground, my marksmen will make it count.” The Sniper’s elf’s ear twitches, a sign of anticipation.

”The Dragon isn’t the worst of it, they’ve hit the grain stockpiles.” Mutters his companion, an elven Major.

”They targeted the granaries? I thought it was only one or two they raided.” Lieutenant Leopold frowns.

”I’m afraid it’s much worse than that.” A white-robed Heigelen Captain Beatrice von Harti grimaces. ”That was only to cover what they did to the others. The heretics have tainted some of the stockpile, enough to render it all suspect. We’re still trying to get the word out but… people are hungry. Those who eat the tainted grain die in a matter of days… and then rise again.”

Neumunster Officers, Elven Captains and Chevalisse Lords alike all voice their outrage.

”Monsters!” Lieutenant Herman shouts.

”Blasphemers!” Snarls Sir Eilen.

”Terrible! A crime against all sentient life!” Hisses the Elven Petty-Officer.

”May this ‘Prince’ burn in Below! Captain Torstweiser cries.

”…Seven-hundred Saint’s help them come winter...Gods… Is there nothing we can do?” Shouts another.

”We must protect what little provisions we have.” The brow of The Generalhardens, steel in his voice as he orders the death of countless of his countrymen. All for the greater good. “Refuse any who ask. Use force if they persist… kill them if necessary. We must win at any cost.”

The Paladin places a hand on his shoulder. It’s trembling. ”This sin is his alone. Not yours, General. The Gods will punish them for this tragedy, not us.”

The General’s shoulder slumps, the hard lines on his face alleviate. He is no young man, but for a single moment he looks many years older. ”Sometimes I think the Gods are already punishing us, old friend…”
He says it softly enough for only The Paladin to hear.

”Damn them!” The Knight slams his gauntlet on the table in fury. “Baise leurs mères putain et leurs pères de merde pour donner naissance à ces méchants!”

Everyone pauses as a booming chuckle from outside the pavilion answers his Chevalisse curses.

”Oh, Ah dannae fear no Black Company Boogieman. Me and the lads ‘ere will fix him for ya.” The Highlander says with a beaming smile as he enters, the flash of white sleeves and rustle of green kilts as a dozen of his men follow the towering warrior into the pavilion. ”Aye, him and his wee lizard.”

”Thrice-damned Clansmen. What the fek are they doing here?” The Sergeant growls at the disorderly soldiers and their ad-hoc uniforms. Those not jostling and shoving each other are looking around at the other pavilion occupants with fierce grins and a fire in their eyes.

”Ahm ‘ere cos I bloody feel lahk et, don’t ay? Took a wee stroll and decided to pop by. Ahm a free man, ye ken?” The 7-foot-and-some-change giant has to lean down to get in the Neumunster NCO’s face, to his credit he doesn’t bat an eye. ” Ah go where Ah please. Yew got a problem with that, laddie?”

”Ah, you’ve arrived. Please, Sergeant-Major, give the man some room.” The General motions for the red-haired giant to join them at the War Council. “I must say I’m somewhat surprised that the Isabella Clans have lent their aid to the Free Alliance in this late hour.”

”Oh I wouldnae be reading too much into it. The Lady Isabella is nae a fan of yew lot, her worshipfulness just dannae want this gobbledegook sorcerer keelie to get too big fer his britches. Such is The Lady’s will. Uaine Nighean. The giant makes a sign and kisses his open palm.

“Uaine Nighean.” The clansmen behind him unanimously follow suit, kissing their hands as they murmur deferentially. A pray, a ward… it’s anybody’s guess.

”The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend. I shall fight beside you with pride.”The Paladin grasped the forearm of the giant in a warrior’s handshake.

”Aye. Well now, et’s some kind o’ start…” There’s a mad glint in The Highlander’s eye as he accepts the warriors handshake with glee. It had been too long since he’d had a real fight…

Nah man we are in a story with gods, paladins and demons. Surviving a stab wound isn't that much surprising.

At least we didn't try to jump over a lava pit after killing the White Bitch.

>>
>>1372293
You say that, but I'm still guessing we're going to have gruesome scars from it. Just look at what happened to "Smiles", and that dude didn't even kill the anti-christ alongside his own kid.

>>
>>1372309
So white bitch was expecting twins?
>>
>>1372329
The +3 HP was because a fifth of White Bitch's total HP is 3 HP. That's how "His Blood for Mine" works. There is no evidence to support the theory about twins.
>>
>>1372329
I'd have to go through the archive to prove it, but from what I recall she wasn't expecting it. I remember last session that the amount of hp Prince got back from killing them indicated there were three lives, not two. Do not remember if Forgotten confirmed it or not.

I did read over some of the concerns listed in the last thread. I will try to address them now.

1) Crit-Fail. I have never had a rule requiring rolls to be linked in unless we were rolling for different matters simultaneously (like the missions). I'm not so spiteful towards your success so far as to accept a potentially lethal invalid roll out of spite.

2) Stabbed through the helmet?
I could say you forgot your helmet in the rush. But you didn't, I explicitly wrote that she was close enough to feel her breath on your visor. Certainly White Bitch didn't have the insane strength just to stab straight through it That said, what exactly our Blackthorn armour looks like has never been definitely clarified beyond the purchase picture. So, to cover my own sick-sleep-deprived mistake I'm going to go with pic-related. Plenty of stabbabilitynew word, it will catch on there if you flick the visor up. Still retains it's scare factor as well.

3) Poison. Fast-acting yes, I honestly don't have a reference point for how long it would take to feel the effects of a poison coated weapon on a physically active person. The poison was partially burnt out by MBFH, but it would have taken a more dedicated

If we are still unsatisfied with that as an explanation, SGT Bad Hand served with White Bitch for several years and would know her preference in this matter. He may have searched her body for the antidote. At the time you bleeding out was a bigger concern.

4) Casualty roster. I did fail to properly update it, that has since been corrected. Cheers.

5) Twins? No, the foetus/child/thing/anti-christ whatever was barely a week or two old. Not quite enough to get some life-force juice out of it, independent from the mother. As >>1372355 the HP gain is 20%.

Neat theory though, maybe I should have just ran with it. You fekking baby-killers.

6) But did you died? No, I reckon killing off Prince because of exactly one crit-fail (you didn't fail any other rolls leading up to it either) would be a little harsh. There are permanent consequences for this though, and on the eve of 'The Big One' to boot.

Are you saying we're going to be up and fighting by the time the big one rolls around? We just got a poisoned knife stabbed right through our face. Unless we start living vicariously and or literally through the dragon, why would we be up? Saint was a shit and her healing failed, which was the only real possibility for recovering quickly we had.

Sidenote: will our grievous wound lower our HP total or inflict a malus?

If Prince is too injured to fight in 'The Big One', I wouldn't mind us shifting pov to Kiranofu for the big battle. I would understand if you don't want to go full Commander Quest mode though. Juggling that many units fighting in a siege situation might slow things down by a lot, and you pretty much told us that the attack would come in waves.

Please just tell us that Prince is still a handsome boy,

Kresden, Mid-Morning

You were so cold. You thought death would be warmer, more fire and brimstone like they say in the sermons. But it was icy… like a flat lake before the frost has fully taken hold. You wanted to dip your toes into that lake. Submerge yourself into nothing and leave it all behind. You’re not sure why you didn’t. Or couldn’t, to be honest. Below knows you wanted to.

Voices…

”=== I vould not vorry, Beati. Very gut, such a thing has not been considered for medical use before.” A western Neumunster accent

”But… the after-effects. I fear I-” A woman’s voice. Soft as milky and honey.

”You have saved zis man’s life, madame. ========= ill turn. I vill be nearby should zere be any change.”

”Thank you, Herr Doktor. For everything.” A gruff voice. Yes… your old friend…

The light between you fluttering eyelids. And the same time both not so different from a hangover, and altogether something else entirely. You've never been so relieved to feel pain at sunlight from a hangover after all. Doctor Kurerfitz, ‘Saint’ and ‘Bad Hand’ are all standing on the foot of your bed. It looks like CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus is on the balcony with someone else… and of course Kid is sitting on the chair in the corner. They’re the first one to notice you shifting.

You can dislike a man, hate him even. Their snoring, smell or penchant for cheating. Your comrades can drive you up the wall with their bickering. And yet you can still trust them with your life in battle. That kind of pact is not easily broken. Your Kreigstrom are among the best of the best, fighting in unison with complete and utter faith in the man beside them.

---------------------------------------------------------------

”Seems like you lot won’t be rid of me that easily…” Your voice is raspy and weak. It hurts to even speak. Gods, why is it so bright?

”…!” Kid uncrosses their legs with a start.

”Prince!” Saint gasps.

”Sir!” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus and Cairsun rush in from the balcony.

"Fek me, can't someone dim the lights..."

”BROTHER!” The other three have to physically restrain SGT ‘Bad Hand’ from lifting you out of the bed in a crushing embrace. He settles for a hearty slap on your shoulder, your good shoulder. He’s grinning down at you like a child that found a dropped Gelt-piece.

”Haha! Gods one of these days I swear we’ll be done with you, maybe. But not yet, pal.” The dishevelled moustachioed madman is most definitely not crying. Absolutely. There’s just the wind from the window or something in his eyes. ”Not yet…”

You smile up at him, or try to. The right side of your face won’t respond. Bandages still cover it but that’s not the problem. You can’t even feel most of it, from your ear to your chin. The last thing you remember was Saint’s fingers digging in there…

”Okay, Saint. I'm not mad, but what did you do to my face?" You glance up at the shamefaced ex-Heigelen Captain.

”Ah… sir. You see you were bleeding out from your face and your armpit…”

”I’m sure the Lieutenant remembers where he was stabbed. Not likely to forget that.” CPL ‘Jack’ chuckles at her side.

”Just tell me, Saint. Did you use your magik or not?”

”I mean, that is to say my powers still haven’t returned to me. I had to resort to using wards. They’re usually benign things, like dispelling magik. Or sealing a gateway, or making sure a door won’t break down. Or ensure the rafters of a newly built barn don’t collapse…”

”…You turned my face into wood?!” A panicked hand tries to clutch at your face, but the stinging ache in your shoulder and armpit stops that movement in it’s tracks.

It's a shame Saint is such a shit at everything. If we had more time beating the stupid out of her, she might have been able to fix our face. Instead we had to rely on her and, lo and behold, she failed us.

That she kept us alive is the only reason I didn't vote to crawl out of hell and haunt her. Doubt she'll be able to fix it either now that it's healing.

I only care about any of that because of all the maluses we've accumulated from it. Considering our entire strategy is pretty much MBFH all the way, we can't play him like that any more. We also took some hefty hits to our combat (and social) effectiveness.

Seriously though, has Saint done anything right? (It's been a while, I may be forgetting a moment of awesome, but for the life of me I cannot remember her doing something noteworthy).

Fairly average. You do have the fear and additional discipline damage.

-------------------------------

”Well, let’s get this over with. If I’m going to throw up I’d want it to be before breakfast.” Your weak hands paw pathetically at your bandages. ”Bad Hand, help me get these off.”

”Right away, brother.” He’s always grinning, the loon. But the Doctor objects.

”I zink it may be too early for-“

”Cool it, Doc. He isn’t getting any prettier.” Bad Hand waves him off as he unwraps the bandages covering your head. Worryingly enough, though you can feel the fabric move you can’t see any better out of that side.

”…Hmph. Very well. Here.” The bespectacled physician hands you an operating mirror.

You stare at the reflection for a while. So, this is you now. It could be… worse. You could be dead. You try to think of a joke, something to ease the mood. But nothing springs to mind.

” You saved my life, Trooper Saint. Thank you. You too, Kid.” Gratitude is a virtue they say. Kid nods in return. They pat you on the foot underneath the blanket and heat out to the balcony for a smoke. Saint doesn’t look convinced.

”I couldn’t save the Corporal though.”

”Hmm?”

”CPL ‘White Bitch’. She was dead already. The Neumunster commandoes must have finished her off before we got there.” Saint says with downcast eyes. ”The two of you must have fought bravely though, they fled before they had a chance to look for the… well, the heir.”

”Right…”

SGT ‘Bad Hand’ and CPL ‘Jack’ exchange a surreptitious glace with each other and you behind Saint’s back. Clearly they could guess at how things had gone down, but why keep ‘White Bitch’ Tara’s betrayal a secret?

Given the split nature, I'll go with not revealing it for now. But it may come up again later.

---------------------------------------------

"…That’s a damn shame. I’m sure you did what you could, Trooper.” You'll go along with your NCOs story for now.

”Yes, sir.”

”Okay. Status update. Who did we lose? What’s our current situation?”

”The Bitch *cough*, sorry CPL ‘White Bitch’ was the only casualty in that ambush, Prince.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ grunts. For it to have been Tara must have surprised him, she’d been his 2nd for years now. ”And it’s CPL Saint now. Earned her spurs out there, I reckon.”

”You were out, and we were still nearly two days from safe harbour.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ shrugs. ”I admit I underestimated the lass. She kept her cool better than me when you were in the muck. I needed someone for 3rd Squad that I could rely on.”

There is another factor, he can’t have been sure at the time whether or not White Bitch’s 2nd, ‘Murder’ Meriam, had been in on it. But you don’t say as much. Wouldn’t want to dampen Saint’s spirits about the whole matter after all.

”Well, congratulations CPL Saint.”

”Thank you, sir. I won’t let you down!” The whitehaired newly-made Corporal salutes you with drill parade composure. Cute.

”Lerrek Jurgensen, that redhead Skald fella, was also promoted.” CPL ‘Jack’ pats Saint on the back, welcoming her to the grim ranks of the NCOs. ”CPL Hirstun asked for him as his second. We’re still missing a few Blackguards, and a LCPL for 1st Squad. I love my boys but… I’m not convinced they’re 2nd material. Can you imagine Nissar, or Smiles? Hmm, with the rest of the Company here we can probably get some transfers over. You’re unit has quite a name for itself now, sir.”

”The rest of the Company is here?” That was good news, good news indeed.

-------------------------------------------
>PROMOTIONS!
Trooper Lerrek Jurgensen promoted to LCPL in 3rd Squad.
Trooper ‘Saint’ is promoted to CPL in 2nd Squad.
Unless you object to SGT Bad Hand’s decisions. If so, say as much now. Saint won’t be doing so much paperwork now, at least not for you.

”Did the Captain ask after me? What about our report.”

”We delivered your report. You know how she is, dismissed without so much as a please or thank you.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ sniffed. A fine leader sure, but he never did understand what you saw in her. ”As for you personally, what with you being near-dead and all, she didn't ask.”

Figures. It’d take more than a near-death experience for you to grab her attention. Even actual death might not cut it. ”Well, at least we'll see our old buddies Whisper and Trots. I wonder what they've been up to, eh Bad Hand?"

A sad twitch of his ruffled whiskers. ”Trots didn’t make it, brother. Free Alliance got him sometime after the Battle for Oxenfurt Bridge. He’s dead, Prince.”

Damn. Another one. Another friend back to the mud. Time were there was nearly a whole squad of you. Griff, Damien, Smyth, Hadrien, Kiranova and others… So few these days. Not much of the Old Guard left at all.

”Sir, that goes for the rest of the Company too. All up we have less than 6 platoons worth of fighting men, most of that infantry.” CPL ‘Jack’ interrupts your malaise with new Officer business, welcome for once. Anything to stop thinking about your dead friends. ”Plenty of leftovers, remnants from mauled squads. Command is squaring them off into more functional units like ours.”

”2nd and 3rd Squad are without Blackguards, sir. We have a list of some without functioning units to be attached to.” CPL ‘Saint’ hands you a sheet. ”Here, take a look.”

Great, back to the world of the living for all of five minutes and already neck-deep in paperwork.

Prince (and by that, I mean we) seem to like'em crazy or otherwise psychologically damaged.

Schuster has physical scars but seems like a sane and normal woman in comparison, *including* that vampire fetish. I can imagine her geeking out over Twilight, if she could read.

Meriam goes berserk around Chevalisse but is otherwise fairly low key. Maybe if this campaign was in Chevalisse lands and her psychological baggage was on better display, we would have been all over her.

Kriegstrom 7th Platoon GAINED:

>Knight-of-the-Line ‘Spitfire’ Spicari: A Sabari musketeer that turned down a comfortable Palace Guard gig for adventure. She’s not afraid to even the odds with those pistols of hers.

-----------------------------------

”Fair enough, the Kriegstrom is all about the hard-hitters.” SGT ‘Bad Hand’ that big bastard will stop a few arrows at least.”

”Don’t forget the musketeer. Those pistols are becoming more prevalent these days.” Saint remarks. ”Might be that one day everyone will be carrying them.”

The others snort at this. Maybe gunpowder will play a bigger role in the future, but replace blade and bow entirely? Hardly. The world will always have a demand for cold steel, magik and beast. The blasted things were too unreliable as well, unless you had Albani working on it.

”Fine, see if I’m wrong.” Saint smiles, a genuine one bright as day. Hurts your eyes, damn her gleaming white teeth. ”To be honest I’m just glad Sir didn’t pick the Vampire. Can’t stand those things. Either way, Durvano will be glad for another Sabari face around, at least.

”Not if he owes her money, which he seems to be with everyone. Vendis Durvano is cunning, but more on making a bargain than measuring a fight. Nissar can barely speak the language, friendly guy but I’m not trusting him to relay commands to the rank-and-file let alone execute them. ‘Smiles’ is a damn good fighter, but no leader. ‘Joker’ maybe could if she took herself seriously for a moment.” CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus scratches the back of his neck, looking at Kid. ”Below, this one shows more promise than them. Give it a few years and… Anyway sir, here are some suitable options I’ve singled out.
------------------------------------------------------

7th Kriegstrom Platoon GAINED
>>LCPL ‘Hard’ Hida: Her squadmates died to a man at Oxenfurt bridge, mostly because of her. The retreat didn’t turn into a full-on rout, also in part because of her.

This is it. There will be no more reinforcements after this. You can expect no more replenishments or fresh recruits until after the Big One. Perhaps well after.
------------------------------------------------------

”I heard she got her squad killed in the rearguard action at Oxenfurt.” SGT Bad Hand doesn’t look convinced.

”I heard the same SGT, but I also heard that’s what saved the rest of her platoon.” Saint looks from her senior-NCO to you and back. ”If Sir has taught me one thing all this time, it’s that sometimes you have to make hard decisions. The ones that don’t go down easy, with you or anyone.”

”That’s exactly the kind of leadership I’m looking for. I’m after someone who will make the hard calls, not a fighter or trickster.” The door to the room opens behind him, CPL ‘Jack’ Marcus half- then snaps to attention. ”Stand fast!”

The whole room stands at attention at the new arrival. Lord-Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova, in the flesh.

If she’s been worn down from the defeats, the long march here and the losses… it doesn’t show. She’s as beautiful to you as you can ever remember. More so perhaps, because of the time it’s been since you last laid eyes upon her. So cold. So striking. So dangerous. Like the hint of springtime still in the clutches of winter.

More winter than spring you suppose, these days.

”Captain! Good to see you.”

You try to sit up and give something resembling a salute, but your wounded shoulder results in you just shuffling a little. You feel the urge to say something, some comment. She is beautiful after all… but then again, you have zero chance of running if she draws her sword on you. Best not.

Captain Kiranova ignores the others and stares at you. Your bandaged shoulder. Your face. Your eye… a part of you resists the urge to turn away your bad side, to escape her scrutiny.

”Leave us.”

In moments the room is emptied but for the two of you, Kid meekly shutting the door behind them. Nothing is said for while.

”I have to admit, it was hard to keep going during that trek from Oxenfurt Bridge. Forced marching the whole way, not sure if we were heading to any sort of sanctuary…” Captain Kiranova nods, absently taking her gloves off and pocketing them. ”It was good to see the the Black Banner over Kresden’s gates. I know it wasn’t easy. You took on the Grenn, I hear. That can’t have been easy, dogs always did scare you.”

Fek. You’d forgotten you’d told her that. She’d gone and tried to foist a half-breed camp mutt on you the next day as a prank.

”Kresden taken, intact. The Vampires toe the line all of the sudden. Even some of the cultists...”

”And the Dragon. Asgorga follows us now.” Well, follows you at least.

”Yes, though the Dragon was your mess from the start in any case.” The Captain doesn’t smile as she looks out the window over Kresden. But maybe you’d have seen the ghost of a grin if you had a better angle to look at her from. ”And the Skald have been delayed I hear, killed their leader in one-on-one combat. The amateur bards are already struggling to make it into some kind of song.”

”Eh, we were short on song material for the band anyways.” You can definitely spot the spectre of a smirk as she turns to you, almost.

”Kresden, the Abbey, Manzer Pass… And the grain, even I may never have thought of that. You’ve done well, Lieutenant.” She lets a hand lean against one of the bedposts,. ”You’ve done well.”

He wasn't the Skald of Skalds, but he was a renowned hero nonetheless. Of all the heroes of the Free Alliance that might face you in your prime, almost all would find themselves sorely tested. Almost all.

>>1374930
Not for everything, unfortunately. Time is running out now, the enemy is at your doorstep.

Saint's sword cannot be reforged, unless you speak with Cairsun and/or Page #137. A safer option, or one more reliable, is no longer open to you. You are too weak to train with CPL Hirstun of Ligh. CPL 'Jack' Marcus' time will come during The Big One, for better or worse.

If you are starting to worry because the pace is starting to quicken, that is exactly as it should be.
>>
>>1374947
could we mentally spar with the dragon because if we go up against the demon bitch bending the demons will might be an option
>>
>>1374958
Not as training, no. You could demonstrate your might again, cow Asgorga once more, but any loss at all would mean a loss of control. Or a weakening of it at least.

On top of that, physical strength can be reflected in the Shadow Realm. Were you to make such a challenge now, before recovering, you would risk much.

“You gave the orders, Captain. I obeyed.”

”Oh Prince…” Your Captain opens her mouth to say something, then thinks better of it. She raises her left hand, as if to stroke your ruined face. Her fingers pull away suddenly, jerking to her side. “And look at where it has gotten you.”

”Don’t talk yourself down, soldier. The Southern Offensive was a disaster. Superior Syka couldn’t find an organised offensive strategy if it walked up and punched her in the threat. Believe me, I considered it several times. You’re the only thing that’s gone right in this whole campaign.” Saint flickers her hair over her shoulder. You always loved watching her sapphire tresses move. ”You saved half the Company at Sarsburg. I asked you to take Kresden, and you did. And most of the Northern Province with it. I knew I was right to appoint you as Lieutenant. Someone that would get the job done. Someone who would go above and beyond. Someone I… someone I could trust.”

”You sacrificed so much for us, Prince. For the Company.” You almost think it out loud, For You. Her hand does touch your ruined face now. You can’t really feel it, as if the muscle it brushes over was dead and strung out, but you know it’s there. ”Bad Hand told me about White Bitch. I’m sorry. I know what she meant to you, that you were…together.”

”She… it weren’t like that, boss.” You look away.

”…No?” One raised blue eyebrow. ”I’m not jealous, if that’s what you’re afraid of. I’m glad.”

The words almost catch in your throat. You feel butterflies in your stomach. Or more likely it’s moths. Someone like you doesn’t deserve butterflies. You can’t think of anything clever to say, so you say something stupid.

”I named a lake after you.”

”…Say again, Lieutenant?” ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova doesn’t even appear mad, just surprised. Hardly ‘wooed’ as you might call it. ”You named a -what- after me?”

”A lake. We made one. Big flat wet thing, like a pond but much bigger.”

”I know what a lake is, idiot. Why did you name one after me?”

”Because um… your eyes. It reminded me of-OW!” You hiss in pain as she flicks your wounded shoulder. ”Okay! I figured if anything would impress you that might.”

”Impress me? Taking Kresden completely intact impressed me. Reigning in the disorganised rabble of allies to hand –impressed- me. Destroying the infrastructure, supplies and reinforcements of the Free Alliance -impressed- me. Giving a glorified puddle my name? That’s just embarrassing, soldier.” She motions to flick your shoulder again and you flinch, weak as a kitten. She stops, exhibiting the rarest of her traits. A sliver of mercy. ”You’re lucky I need you up and running Lieutenant, however tempting the option of tormenting you may be.”

Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova leans back in the lounge chair. She idly picks up a Chessen piece, a Knight, and studying it.

”3 banners-worth of Chevalisse Knights. 8 of the Neumunster eagles sighted. Hellenwood, Isabella Clansmen and what looks like all the ‘heroes’ of the world. That is what is coming for us over those hills. 10,000 men, maybe more.” Kiranova drops the Knight piece back on the board, the impact chipping the stone sword. ”And we have the remnants of the south. A few hundred Company men at most. A hundred or so more Ajiyimad mercs, some Yellow Dogs that didn’t turn tail, Tassenland greenfoots. A handful of Vampires. Maybe… 2000 skeletal warriors to flesh that smattering out. Not good odds.”

”Don’t forget the Dragon.”

”Hmph. I suppose that will help. And that they’re all of a sudden lacking in mobile siege equipment. Good job with that by the way, should buy us a couple of days.” You were never good at reading Kiranova at most times, but she seems particularly set on maintain a neutral expression now. ”Our Employer has assured us that he arrives soon at the head of a new host. But ‘soon’ is blurry. Honestly? He can let us burn here. He doesn’t need us alive at the end of this. Just to live long enough to they commit to the siege, pin the Free Alliance in one place. He wants this boy of yours though, Page #137 has said as much. Meanwhile the Alliance has offered Five-hundred Gelt to hand over the boy over to them.”

”Five-hundr- Dark fekking Father that’s… that’s our entire contract engagement several times over.” If you weren’t already slouched in bed you’d have to sit down. Double hazard-pay as a Corporal netted you 4 Gelt, and that bought you the fanciest enchanted armour available in the ruins of the Capital. In your entire life you would never expect to see more than… 50 Gelt in one place maybe. This is more than a King’s ransom. An Emperor’s ransom.

[2/3]
>>
>>1375979
[3/3]

”Yes. It’s quite the amount. It would explain why the Imperial Treasury at Sarsburg was so bare.” Kiranova nods slowly, looking at the ceiling. ”And safe passage as well, so long as we leave Kresden by tomorrow. Before you say we can’t trust this their Grandmaster Paladin swore, on his power. That’s as real as it gets, this may be legitimate.”

”…I don’t think our Employer would be much impressed with that.”

”We don’t necessarily have to walk away in that direction. The Warlord is hiring. Or, if Kalgarri is not far enough for you, there’s always some war in the distant Rakasha Raj. It never snows there. Sitting on the beaches, squashing the occasional slave uprising. How does that sound? If I’d had my way we would have been doing that from the start.”

”Sounds good, Captain. But… the Black Company has never dishonoured a contract.”

”Clearly you haven’t had a chat with the Annalist. There are plenty of Employers we’ve turned our backs on in rough times, or turned on ourselves.”

”When they turned on us. Creatively interpreted, maybe. Wormed our way out of, sure. But not like this, not outright betrayal.” For some reason, you don’t like this.

”I know Prince, I know this is different. I’m only listing our options. 500 Gelt, and we walk away with a disgruntled and supremely powerful employer after us. Or we stay and fight. Maybe lose, maybe win if our Employer pulls through.” Kiranova leans her head against her hand as she stares at you.

Without our principles the Company is just another roving band of thugs and murders. We are better than that - but unfortunately those principles tie us to this contract...for now.

There is also the very real fact that the Necromancer is 100% winning this war.

I know you boys are desperate to see the annalist, don't worry that'll happen. But the answer for this will be pretty much the same:

I don't think it will work, but asking costs nothing. If it does not work:
>”We’re not regular mercenaries, boss. Changing sides and turning coats with the tide. Our reputation is founded on this selling point, loyalty to the contractor. We back out now, we lose that. We lose our pride.” [Elite]
Weaseling out would be our best option, but outright breaking the contract would go too far.

It’s a general decision to stay, but I’ll put the fear of the Employer down as part of your decision to tell the Captain now.
There have been times where the Company has broken a contract, or creatively interpreted it. The Annalist has told you so himself. But that was always because of the Employer, or . But this? Walking out with an invaluable (well, very valuable) hostage and handing over the town to the enemy, for a straight up bribe? No… the Company has never sunk that low even when their backs were against the wall. You don’t want to start that now. If the Company does this once, they’ll do it again. And it would get easier every time.

“We’re not regular mercenaries, boss. Changing sides and turning coats with the tide. Our reputation is founded on this selling point, loyalty to the contractor. We back out now, we lose that. We lose our pride.”

”Somehow I knew you’d say that. This Company means as much to you as it does to me. They squabble, steal and waste their pay on whores and drink and dice.” Kiranova shrugs as she stands up. She tips over the Chessen Queen, but the Knight blocks it’s fall. But like you say… there is also pride, maybe not pride in what we do or how we do it. Pride in who they are, pride in the man next to them. That it’s about more than just the gold. There is honour in that.”

”Honour?” You scoff, looking away again. Ashamed. You’ve done what you had to at times, doesn’t mean you’re proud of it. ”The things I’ve done, Captain. The dirty tricks and ruthless… Don’t tell me I have any honour, boss.”

”The kind that they sing about in great halls and display on their banners? No, certainly not. No wreath of olive leaves for you Prince, I’m afraid. You’d throw away personal honour in a heartbeat if it meant furthering the Company. In a way, perhaps that has its own odd sort of honour.” The Captain looks down on you, the ghost of a sad smile fading from her lips already. A cushy Raj contract was a sweet dream while it lasted. You feel a painful clench in your stomach, an irrational fear that your Captain will not survive this. ”It’s decided then. We stand and fight.”

It’s not just ‘honour’ that made this decision. It was also fear. Fear of your Employer and what he might do. She has to know… He's too powerful not to have some insurance against. You may be sticking to their side for now, but if the day comes...

”Captain…” You weakly beckon her closer.

[1/3]
>>
>>1376328

”Lieutenant?” She glances to the side, at the doorway or something else you can’t tell. You only have one good eye now anyway. ”What is i-!”

Your lips barely brush hers, her sudden intake of startled breath makes your heart quicken. She recoils but you grab her wrist with your one good hand. ”Our Employer…” Your lips gently touch her cheek as you whisper, you can feel the goosebumps on her skin. ”Etraxis is the ‘brother’ of Saint Judas.” Kiranova’s fist clenches. ”His true name… stars with ‘Anton’.

She slaps you on the good side of your face. Hard. But not as hard as she could have, her sword remains sheathed after all. Her wink tells you the rest. Appearances sake, of course. To anyone watching it would have seemed like an extremely awkward and fumbling attempt at seduction that fell flat on its face, whatever face you have anyway. You don’t think you’d be ballsy enough to try that without a legitimate reason like passing on this sensitive information, and clearly the Captain suspects that she is watched. It was nice though, brought back memories. Those rare good ones of yours.

”At least we won’t have to worry about their Albani Warmachines. The 2nd Rangers really did a number on that Workshop.” You clear your throat, trying to change the subject. It was all there in CPL ‘Jack’s report on your bedside table. You had found yourself surprised at LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams sudden… competence to be frank. He really needed to stop being so far-fetched in his recounting of events though. Walking Castles? Ridiculous. ”That wouldn’t have gone down well if they’d remained operational.”

”No, you’re right. It’s had more of an impact than we could have ever hoped for. We ran into one on the way here actually. I thought that would be the end of us, at the end of our tether a day’s march out from potential safety. Our whole column to be mowed down by one blasted Albani and his toy.” Kiranova casually wipes her lip with the back of her hand as she puts her gloves back on. ”Instead we caught him with his pants down, in the middle of repairs. Killed him before he could get it started.”

”…and?” You’re trying not to lean forward in excitement. Embarrassingly enough you swear there is a stirring in your loins. That could be from the kiss though. You shift slightly trying to disguise it under the blankets.

”And what? We dragged the damn contraption over here with us. It’s mostly functional, a little low on fuel and weapon’s charge according to the boys from Supply, but that’s not the problem.”

”What’s the problem?”

”The controls seem simple enough once Supply opened the ‘cockpit’ as they’re calling it. But no one can fit inside the damn thing. Even a child isn’t quite small enough t-“

”Corporal ‘Jack’!” You shout as loud as you can, meaning just above a small dog's bark in your current state. A devious idea is beginning to take fruition in the dark corners of your mind.

The thuds of the heavy boots of the ex-Neumunster legionnaire are clearly audible as he hurries down the hallway ad bursts into the room, snapping to attention. “Yes, sir!”

The half of your face that can move twists into a horrific parody of a grin. CPL ‘Jack’ can’t help but recoil, meanwhile Captain Kiranova regards you with curiosity.

That’s it for this thread gents. A slower and shorter thread than what we’ve become used to, I know. Next thread may well be the last LT Prince will have to settle things, tie up loose ends and (depending on your choices) do what you can to not be so cripplingly impaired as battle draws close. It will be a fortnight until then, due to work.

The Free Alliance prepares their attack, the Necromancer approaches and the Company is left caught in the middle. The Honour of the Company remains intact… but will that matter if everyone is dead?

Aww. I had a good speech prepared and everything:

>”Fek him. And his mad-bint sister too. Fek the both of them. We’re less than pawns to the likes of these. Pawns you at least try to spend carefully. This lot will just throw us away... But you know what, every other employer treated us as pawns anyway. That is the life of a mercenary. If Neumunster wants to 'buy us out', as it were, they had better come with quadruple the amount of money. 2000 Gelt would be enough to get every man, woman, and child in this company squared away, to retirement or to a new life. And we'll need it too, because Captain, fek honor and fek pride, but if we back out now, we'll never find steady work on this continent again."

Question for you, QM. I think 500 Gelt is too little. If double hazard pay is 4 Gelt, then, as a very conservative estimate:

A trooper gets paid half Gelt per month. NCOs get paid double that. Officers get paid even more.

With two to three hundred souls in the Company, their monthly pay alone would be at least 100 to 150 Gelt.

Plus supplies, equipment, ammunition, hirelings in the baggage train... I estimate it would take at least 200 Gelt to hire the Company for one month.

And if it's actual fighting instead of suppressing slave revolts, I suspect that the Company will demand more than that.

So 500 Gelt would be barely enough to hire the Company for a short campaign of two and a half months, yet you say it's several times what the Necromancer offered the Company to fight in his fekking war. That doesn't sound right at all.
>>
>>1376540
Have some respect. Her name is not 'Jenny'. It's Trooper 'Tank' Jessica.
>>
>>1376959
It was several times the initial contracting engagement, the deposit as it were. Most mercenary companies made big bucks on claiming continuous expenses during the campaign. (similar to how a large corporation makes a killing on bullshit tax evasion costs and expenses).

Theoretically a Trooper is indeed paid their 30 silver a month but a whole mountain of expenses, debts and deductions (food, lodging, equipment etc) ensure they rarely see a fraction of it, and spend that quickly. And that's assuming it's not months arrears. They'd almost never actually see it on hand. That kind of money simply doesn't exist in circulation to cover every troopers pay. An officer's disparity is not so severe, they make more of a profit.
>In your entire life you would never expect to see more than… 50 Gelt in one place maybe

500 may not seem like a lot with what you've said, but 500 in cold hard -physical- Gelt is a fortune. Excellent maths though, I'm gratified someone is even bothering to look into this.

You make an excellent point on the matter of future employment as well. The Black Company is regarded as exceptional among mercenaries for their loyalty to the contract.

>>
>>1377122
I believe the black prince ending is him getting possessed by the dark father or something like that?
>>
>>1377138
the QM once said that it's power over Darkness, but unrelated to the Dark Father. Something else entirely.
>>
>>1377147
My guesses:

His Avatar: Dark Father assumes direct control?

His Champion: Under Dark Father's influence?

Black Prince: Still a "bad guy", but not directly associated with the Dark Father.

The other three might be locked out now that we chose to stay and fight for the Necromancer.

Kriegstrom Never Die
Manifest Destiny
A Company of Heroes
>>
>>1377169
How does fighting for the Necromancer stop us from being a Kriegstrom, American, or loyal to the Company?
>>
>>1377169

we become the witch king pretty much what qm said
>>
To be honest I'm up for becoming black prince.
>>
>>1377257
Though I wanted "A Company of Heroes"
>>
>>1377257
we are almost there
>>
>>1377257
I have a feeling it'll be more than that.

I mean, His Avatar and His Champion pretty much feels like trading your soul for unprecedented power and fear from the people around you, AKA losing your humanity for power.

I feel like Black Prince is like having your soul slowly decay because of your own choices and becoming something as powerful and revolting as the Champion or the Avatar of the Dark Father through your own efforts and evil deeds.
>>
>>1377272
And retaining the respect of your men because you still have your 'humanity' though perverted and corrupted, you still retain your identity but pretty much embraced the darkness.
>>
>>1377034
So where would the Warmachine do the most good? I'm thinking we put it with the Nuemenster levees. Give them a bunch of spears so they could keep the enemy from swarming the Warmachine, meanwhile it would prevent their ranks from being easily broken and keep their morale up.

Maybe give Cpl Saint the job of organizing it so that Jenny feels better about it.

Kinda disappointed here with the responses and creativity here.

We have an almost ungodly bargaining chip with the goddamn little emperor kid. Not only that, the kid fucking is scared shitless of us. We don't even have to negotiate with the other side. The kid that we have right now in our custody is the goddamn leader of the Neumensters.

All we have to do is get the kid to sign a contract, in front of witnesses from both sides, stating that he hires the Black company and buys out the Necromancers contract.

Secondly, we should have the kid recognize the Dark Father and his worship as one of the official religions of Neumenster, commemorate one day out of the year for his worship to thank him for his sacrifice, and build at least three places of worship within at least three major cities inside of Neumenster. And have a tithe of the donations to the Dark Father be given to the Black Company. Finally, members of the Black Company after x years of service (if not dead) be given the option to get priest status and live out preaching the words of the Dark Father, with the tithe going to support them.

Reasons? Prince took the words of White Bitch to heart and saw... something when he was nearly dead. Figures he owes the Dark father one, and lets face it if the stories are true all of Life owes the Dark Father.
>>
>>1377266
I would like either Company of heroes or go all in for the officer route
>>
>>1377621
This is an interesting option, but it would count against the Black Company´s honor. A neat idea to have anyways, and is always a good option if we see the things too dire
>>
>>1376536
Seconding this
>>
>>1377621
That could be very interesting...
>>
>>1377621

Adding on to this, we request parlay with the attacking forces and present to them the terms and flesh out the contract. This will

a.) Buy us time until the necromancer's support gets here.

and

b.) gives us an out if things don't look good.

Basically, we use the negotiating tactic to buy some time. When the Necro's forces come into the field, that's when we either say

1.) Yay to new Employers, the Neumenster's

or

2.) Lol JK stalled for time fuck you guys.

Also we gotta get someone other then Kiranova to flesh out the fucking contracts. If your word is your bond, get a goddamn technical Lawyer to write that shit out so we don't get fucked like this again.

Finally, lets take a look at the terms of the contract. Best yet, if we have technically fulfilled the terms of the contract we hold the town and when the Necro's forces get here basically hold an auction to see who gets us, the town, and the little shit.

I don´t want to spoil the fun, but are you sure that we should throw an orphan into the thick of the battle? She hasnt got any sort of combat experience and will probably panic when she comes under fire. >>
>>1377621
>All we have to do is get the kid to sign a contract, in front of witnesses from both sides, stating that he hires the Black company and buys out the Necromancers contract.
That's a pretty direct abandonment of out previously signed contract. We can't do that without the necromancer violating his side of the deal first or selling us out first.

At this point, it's mostly a matter of tricking him into screwing us over before we do what he wants us to do so we can switch sides or just plain bail.
Because once we do our job, we're off to the sacrificial pit.
>>
>>1378088
They didn´t warn us when they went and opened a highway to hell in the same city where we were. While it may be a little bit late to bring it up, it constitutes a needless disregard of our employees´ safety.

I think this may be a viable plan, and if we spin it the right way we might be able to get a little more rep and respect from future employers in a dick-us-over-and-you-are-done-for way.
>>
>>1378088
Any ideas how we could pull it off?

The highway to hell thing is quite good (as stated by>>1378163).
But I think we need something more recent.
>>
>>1378316

We are expected to hold grudges, but if we need a more recent excuse, why not complain against his troops behaviour in Oxenfurt Bridge? I think there cultist there. We can invent any sort of histories about how they compromised the whole assault, leaving us to over the retreat, spells that went really REALLY wrong and broke our formations and such. If everything fails, we can say that we were supposed to be commanded by a smart and totally not killed by our ineptitude commander, not a crazy cultist with a ritual fetish.
>>
>>1378350
But that's more or less what we signed up for. They use their other mortal troops just as bad.
Ideal would be something that goes activly against us. Not us being colateral.

Not saying your idea is bad, it just feels insufficent.
>>
>>1378402
Yeah, you may be right. But if we want to break this contract, either we use the highroad to hell card, or we go full on Rules Lawyer route to see if there is any kind of loophole in the contract.

I wonder if the company has its own lawyer or the equivalent.
>>
>>1377770
We can get the Cultist to give her some drugs to help with that.

Fuck you Saint you couldn't even heal us when it counted. We're going to do what had to be done.

You don't want this kid getting drugged up and sent into battle? Find a way to heal her goddamn legs.

> MFW she finally gets off her fucking as and talks to other mage about how their magic works

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REALIZE THE POWER WAS WITHIN YOU THE WHOLE TIME YOU STUPID BITCH.

> We could always cut off Scribe 187s legs and stick him in there anyways.
>>
>>1377766
Please. We just have to goad syka into attacking our forces which, given past events, seems to be as simple as "standing too close" to her or the enemy.

In honour of White Bitch and to become better bros with Bad Hand though we should seduce Syka for more info on the Necromancer.

Also we should show Mask our new face.
>>
>>1378416
> Who is the annalist

It is moot until we get the Necromancer name.

True names in this setting = fucks over magic users. Hard.

Otherwise the Necromancer could probably fucking solo our company. Like rolling wouldn't be a thing.
>>
>>1378477
Yeah there's bound to be plenty of kids around , I'm sure a number of them would love to fight and die for the black company
>>
Draw up a contract with the boy emperor with a clause of us only fighting for his empire after a breach of former contract from previous employer or subordinate.

Inform Syka of her brother's death.

She attacks us.

Previous conversation tract broken by Syka's actions.

Free to unleash surprise attack against her and fight for the empire.
>>
>>1378508
That might work. But we need to assure us surviving the whole mess first.
As>>1378487 pointed out, the rest of the name would be perfect.
Playing Erhu for Mask might be even better now, maybe we can help him remember more stuff that could help us.
>>
>>1378508
It's not a surprise attack if she's already attacking you.

Also seriously we need to get that cultist to lay traps to capture human souls in places where snipers might set up, or sapped might try to infiltrate.

Gotta watch out for fuckers trying to dig under the walls too. Maybe we could bury some undead with instructions to dig down and collapse any siege tunnels?

Finally I feel not sending any reinforcements could qualify as a breach of contract.

Oh and hands. Cut off all the hands from the undead and replace them with stabby shit. Gather hand's up in a net after sharpening fingers to stabby bones dipped in shit or ideally drugs or poison if cultist bro can make enough.

Have the dragon drop the hands while flying over their camp at night. With the reduced weight they won't be too damaged by the fall and can crawl into food and water supplies to taint them with shit hands, then sneak into beds and armour and shoes to lurk and wait to stab people when they go to bed/get up in the morning.

Good luck sleeping well!
>>
>>1378826
>Gotta watch out for fuckers trying to dig under the walls too. Maybe we could bury some undead with instructions to dig down and collapse any siege tunnels?

Why not just build a moat around the town? We can always put the undead to do the labor. They never get tired and it might help the green troop develop some muscle.
>>
>>1378845
Time constraints. Besides they have dwarves, er, Albani. Digging under a moat probably will only slow them down.

Besides they can double as "dead" falls for fucking over their cavalry. Sally out, strike their siege/archers/mages, get chased back by cavalry that thinks we're over-extended, retreat over buried undead reinforcements that have dug dead falls to trap the horses and are now suddenly right there behind their broken lines as our Kriegstorm smashes back into the cavalry to kill them all.
>>
>>1378845
>>1378863

Or we could do both.
>>
The Captain has already started on some basic seige preperation stuff, but there is not much time for anything. The Free Alliance army arrived hot on her heels, and the majority of the stuff you are looking at couldn't be pulled off in a few days unless you focused on that and nothing else.

>>1378826
Standard necromancy doesn't quite work like that. Otherwise an army of skeletal minions would be unstoppable!

Try to think of it as more akin to the undead in Warhammer or DnD. Skeletal minions are actually quite fragile compared to the average fighter, any solid enough hit will loosen the reanimation beyond repair. Their man advantage is that they are a zero-supply problem and simply do not break due to morale issues.
>>
That said, raising the freshly fallen in the middle of the battle among their once-comrades main lines is one of the Necromancer's favourite tactics.

There are barely a handful of cultists that can do that though. Even Demagogue Jale couldn't pull it off on a massive scale.
>>
>>1378873
Well since siege preparation is being dealt with. Can cultist bro brew some chemical wars crimes to drop it on the enemy?
>>
>>1378882
What's your view on contracting with the boy
>>
>>1378873
So . . . . . We can't reanimated a bunch of hands?

But we could bury them under pitfalls to bait cavalry across yes?

What about a horde of undead cats and other vermin?
>>
>>1378931
A few problems.

1) They aren't actually the ruler, just the heir. There's the coming of age, coronation and all that stuff. But the point is everyone knows there would BE an Emperor sometime in the future, hence his importance.

2) Despite your own perilous situation, the Necromancer is actually winning this war. Half of Neumunster is his, and it's not looking fantastic on the other Free Alliance fronts either.

3) There is some wriggle room in your contract, that's how your barracks-room lawyers like it, but nothing that would make a deal like that anything less than dishonourably betraying your employer. Whether there is any Honour serving him in the first place is still questionable.

And, after all you've done... the Free Alliance kind of hates you. Not the Company per-se, just you personally.
>>
>>1378936
Digging them behind their lines could work, but how many? You have 2000 skellies against 10,000. Would they be better suited behind the lines or on the walls?

Soul traps take too much time and effort compared to a regular trap for a sniper spot. There aren't a whole lot of obvious locations. Odds are they will have their own means of camouflage.

They wouldn't be as manauverable or lithe, but yeah... I guess. Merely stepping on them would
>>
>>1379099

Plague. A lot of it. Use the skellies to build fortifications able to resist for 2-3 days...then hit them with plague. Its a no-win situation for them after that. They spend the time to fight and take the city, leaving them weak with the necromancer arriving soon, or they leave and we win.

Also, keep an eye out for ways to shank any spellcasters they got.

As far as my feelings on switching sides go, i'd wait to see Sister Syka levels of betrayal (the demon summoning in the city) as a good rationale to bail. If the Alliance produced proof the necromancer was about to call down fire on the Alliance and us both, i'd switch.
>>
>>1379099
I mean like dig some deadfalls and then have skeletons hide under them so they can pull away support beams so the cavalry falls in after our troops run over the deadfalls. Since they're undead they don't need food or water or air so there's less risk of them being discovered.

We would just need a few skellies.

I would like to put the whole force there to come in from behind and then retreat with us behind the walls.

Ooh could we have a soul trap set up for when we challenge someone to single combat? That way we can get one of their leaders with it.
>>
>>1379114

It's time to abandon Kresden and run.

"Now wait a tick", I hear QM say. "You can't run. The enemy is too close. Those Chevalisse cavalry will run you down outside the town walls."

And that would be true, if they knew that we were running.

Under the cover of night, the Black Company (including LCPL Jessica), the Ajiyimad mercs, the Tasseland greenhorns, and the Vamps, will sneak out of Kresden with the heir in tow.

Staying behind is all of the Undead, most of the Cultists, a few diehard Troopers, and LT Prince.

The Dragon can also stay behind, and evac at its discretion.

This is, of course, a suicide mission.

When the sun comes back up, the Free Alliance will think that the Black Company is still in Kresden. That's because we'll have every skeleton manning the walls, and with a few wearing Black Company colors. All of the attention will be on Prince anyway, and he will have a few living troopers and the Dragon near him to complete the illusion.

While the Free Alliance troops build up siege towers, the General, the Paladin, the Knight, the Sniper, and the Highlander will have no choice but to watch while we put on THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH.

We will rant.
We will rave.
We will threaten.
We will cajole.
We will beg for parley one moment and abruptly call it off the next.
We will make them watch while we feed a few hostages to the Dragon one moment, and then release some women and children "as a gesture of goodwill" the next.
We will be temperamental.
We will be unpredictable.
We will make them think that we still have the heir (some random boy).
We will make them think Kiranofu is still there (some unlucky trooper in a blue wig).

We will troll the living daylights out of them.

We will be the perfect villain that they have been told the expect.

And in a few day's time, they will rush over the walls on their siege towers, only to find a few dozen Cultists, a few troopers, a LT who's too wounded to lift his sword, and (literally) a skeleton crew.

"But, but... the cavalry can still run you down!" I hear QM say. But they can't.

While the Free Alliance was enjoying our song and dance number, our forces have already split up into platoon-sized groups, and melted away into the countryside. Kiranofu will have the 7th Kriegstrom and the heir with her, and she will have been force marching them east the entire time.

By the time the Chevalisse cavalry chase after them, the heir may already be in the hands of the Necromancer.

The other platoon-sized groups will slowly regroup. There is no hurry. The Necromancer's relief army should be more than enough. Kresden will be the Free Alliance's last stand.

And so we will look the General in the eye and say, "Somewhere out there, there is a legless orphan girl piloting an Albani warmachine. So do what you must. I have already won."

Good heavens.

>>1380379
Suicide plan? Automatic veto.

We have a Dragon, and mages, and cult alchemists.

So let's do everything you say EXCEPT cast illusions on the skeletons so that we can have a layered defense. Ring forts. Have points designed to intentionally be breached to allow the enemy in deeper. Skeletons + illusions will make it seem like we're planning to hold off until we can complete a ritual at the center of the town with a mass sacrifice to turn the tide.

They get there and see it's just us standing on a heap of metal - oh shit no it's a dragon. Zombies left behind - or even just dead bodies waiting to be triggered to raise, we can use our own casualties from earlier to make it seem more realistic all around - rise up at our designated breaches in the ring fort and collapse rubble deadfalls into barricades.

We hop on our dragon as it burns everything around it. Namely the town that the enemy is now trapped in.

2 birds with one stone, have the cultists be barricaded in buildings to tie down more of the forces and string them out through the town. Have the buildings stuffed with everything flammable - straw, cloth, big dusty bags of flour. Have the walls soaked with accelerants and toxic liquids that will cause poisonous fumes to spread out through the town as well.

I mean fuck the cultists they're just as disposable in my opinion. So let's not tell them about the whole "burn everyone in the town".

Anyone read the Malazan Book of the Dead?

Anyways yeah we fly off on our dragon as the skellies and cultists burn.

Hey! Actually could we use their deaths as some sort of ritual sacrifice? It's really what cultists are for. Maybe summon a bunch of fire elementals, or turn the smoke and poison gas into some sort of malignant wraith that will roam the area and need to be dealt with by the Nuemenster forces or at least keep them from reorganizing outside the town.

Like if every cultist has like a trinket totem they don't have to be individually powerful if we have a lot.

Anyways. TL;DR Lure everyone in and burn everything down around them.

Honestly Parley is what we do after repulsing some attacks. They won't believe we want to avoid bloodshed after the shit we pulled. It'll just be seen as weakness.

Can you give me a reason to NOT burn the town with their best troops for sure, if not the majority, and the cultists so they aren't a problem when we betray the necromancer?

"Um, Saint?"
"Yes, Trooper Schuster?"
"When pullin' that knife outta the Boss' face, any chance ya scrambled his brain a bit?"
"Why do you ask?
"It's just, well, this latest plan feels a bit… fekked, is all."
"…It is a tad more eccentric than usual."
Trooper Durvano let out a snort as he brushed a strand of blue hair out of his face
"I don't care what you jealous wenches say, I ain't ever felt prettier."
>>
>>1381069

Parley always remains an option. Remember, the odds of dying or being defeated here are not impossible. Better play it nice at first and as a gesture of "goodwill" we will release all of the citizens of the city for them to feed.

While doing a huge fuck you to the Alliance in the form of a raging inferno is fucking amazing, I would save it as a last resource and not as our main battleplan.

Also, we are supposed to hold the city, not burn it. This is an strategic point and think of the extra we might be able to get from our employer if we don´t turn it into ashes.

There are a few problems I'm seeing here. Major one being time, the Free Alliance Army was only a couple of days behind the Captain, they will be here by the morning setting in to commence the siege.

Then there's the cavalry. You did say 'oh Cavalry won't be a problem, our forces will melt into the countryside'. Several-hundred foot soldiers are going to melt into the rolling meadows and and farm pastures of North Neumunster? You don't exactly have Fangorn Forest at your doorstep. Concealing a medieval force numbering hundreds is a lot more difficult than a similar number in modern forces trained for that and able to operate fairly independently.

Then there is this magic bollocks that you somehow think is the solution to this all with elemental summon, wraiths? I don't know what you think is with that. Minor magik users are a thing in this setting, but that means -minor-. Demagogue Jale is the most promising cultist around and it takes him all day to set up a soul trap. They are simply not on the level of Sukarno, Necromancer or the Grand Mages. No one is. The vast majority of magik, like Saints wards, are designed to prevent other magik fekkery. The cultists and #137's sister (#86) give you some minor tricks, not an auto-win summoning. That matter at Sarsburg required a complex ritual led by Syka that lasted several days for the initial siege.

Finally, before I even address the 'flight basket' whatever... you guys are assuming the skies will be uncontested. And why on earth would the Alliance forces be trapped inside the burning town they've taken?

Some of this smacks of desperation. Digging the creativity though.

For this campaign I don't plan on it coming up, if ever. There may be segments looking back at the past, before the Company, but all suitably vague. Prince would have been in his early-twenties when he joined the Company. Clearly he was in a bad enough place for a lifetime in a merc outfit to seem like the better option.

Il post some tactics i think could work
When i get home
>>
Perhaps have a single soul trap set on the ground outside of town. When the enemy army advsnces, head out with a table and two chairs, setting a chair over the trap and offer it to the enemy commander for parlay "before resorting to battle." Pop trap and return fast as hell back to town.

hmmm well every one seems to be forgetting tht we have some vamps laying around.

use the vamps at night to gather battle plans and other info from the camp, could posion there food, set fires, kill both people and a lot of horses( and cut them lose good bye horseman worry's)

and depending on how this goes we can do this every night witch can run down there sprits.

the dragon can do much of the same things as long as his not getting attacked by some other fly monster.

horse will run at the sight and smell, he could ruin the siege weapons before they even get used,
could also just fly and go fuck up there base camp, could do this ether just by flying over or we send him out on a round about way and have him attack in a day.

i would have about half of the undead buried outside the wall and when the Alliance forces rush to the walls get fire ( could pour lots of oil behind the area the undead are buried in a big lane and then use an fire arrow to light it up)

to cut them off from the rest of there friends get the unread to un bury themselves and back stab and then we rush out to pincer move them. then run back inside before the fire is out.

the cultists can then try to bring back as many as they can after the day of fighting is over. and make poison bombs

now im guseing that they will/ most likely breach the doors well i would like us to set up a kill zone will carts and other thing to funnel them in a line with archers ready and then use the jenny to fuck them up in the gate.

any of this doable?

also horseman wont be an issue as long as we stay inside the towns gates

and coudl make some of the towns people help us in this fight by saying if they dont and we lose the dragons going to burn this town as a big fuck you( only if we lose everything)

thye can help we setting up defances putting out fires in the town and the church people can help the wounded anyone not doing or trying to work argest us from the inside will be killed.

or we could just send them runing into the Alliance forces big chrage to stop it and making them having to feed this people.

what do people think of thise ideas?
>>
>>1381966
Aye, raiding them while they prepare to assault is a good idea.
I'd say we use the dragon as schrödingers dragon. Keep them uncertain whether he attacks or not or is even there at all.
An elf Aralbeste aiming at the sky is one less aiming at the walls.

Something that powerful maybe around, maybe not fucks up morale quite nicely over time.

Using the undead asymetrical is also a neat idea.

Using barricades and kill zones is a given I think.

We need to buy time for either our employer to show up or them deciding fighting us isn't worth it.

Sleep deprivation is hell of a drug:
1. free
2. legal
3. short term side effects are not as bad as having a hangover
4. will put you in an early grave just the same

>>1381441
We just need enough of a lead. A person on foot can actually out-distance a rider given a long enough time period. (http://www.popularmechanics.com/adventure/sports/g418/animal-kingdom-top-marathon-runners/?slide=1)

And don't forget that we have a Dragon to harass their scouting parties, so the enemy must send out a few large scouting parties instead of many small ones, and large groups of people generally most slower. And there are refugees scattered all over the countryside. Are they going to chase down and inspect every single one? That will take time too.

If we really trusted our employer, we could just send Kiranofu and a few riders out east with the heir, but then we would lose our only guarantee that the Necromancer would actually bother to rescue us.

I also like to consolidate the ideas from the other anons here, most of which can be applied whether the Black Company runs or not.

1. Negotiate to buy time. Mind games. Trolling. Get them so mad that they can't think straight.

2. Allow the townsfolk to leave. Fewer mouths to feed during a siege. Give the Free Alliance the impression that the people we released are infected with the same thing we infected the grain with. Trick the Free Alliance into killing their own people.

3. Night raids on the enemy camp with the Dragon and the Vamps. Let them try to sleep over the agonizing cries of burn victims.

4. Traps. So many traps. All the traps. Traps on potential camp sites. Traps on the town walls. Traps on the skeletons. Traps in buildings. Traps disguised as loot. Trash disguised as corpses of Black Company officers.

5. If all else fails, and we lose the town walls, fall back into the town itself and make them fight for every floor of every house. Turn Kresden into a mini Stalingrad.
>>
>>1383317

Adding on to this fine anons post.

3.) set fires on our walls when the wind blows toward the enemy. Get them to assault under smog/smoke, have them fucking choke on the smog. set fire to something that fucking reeks, so that it assaults their sense of smell too.

4.) Assume the walls are gonna be taken. Plan for the worst case scenario. Create choke points in the town to funnel troops. Bombs/munitions in buildings to blow them and create rubble. Create undead murder holes (have the undead dig their own holes/graves, then grab troops when passing by.

5.) I am assuming that they have Grenn and Elves. Is there any high pitched noise underneath the waveband of normal hearing but can target elves and Grenn hearing?

6.) Shit talking. Massive shit talking. Constantly preach to the Alliance members how they are gonna die on the walls, in the streets, next to smelly half dog all asshole Grenn far away from home for a country that don't give two shits for them. How instead of farming and putting food on the table they are forcing you to fight while your family starves. Just straight demoralize them.

7.) Poison food/water supplies.
>>
>>1383317
I like to imagine Prince being fueled by spite and hate more than any hopes of survival for coming with these plans. Not that that's a bad thing
>>
>>1383317
You need more sleep. Your idea of negotiations is silly because they already hate us as much as possible and what are we going to do, goad them into attacking like they already plan?

Dragon harassing scouting parties you say? thing is, we only have one dragon and scouts are pretty good at not being seen. Also it'll be obvious where our Army went or at least is going and they just have to go there and prepare for us to fight them piecemeal with the benefits of walls.

The Nuemenstars are more likely to try and heal the townsfolk if they even believe us. We don't exactly ooze trust. Hey look now they have a bunch of people who intimately know the town and our forces disposition.

The night raids are a given though.

The issue with building traps is time management. A moat is probably a good idea. Trebuchets is probably a better one so we can throw rock's at their siege engines.

Really it would be good to know what we can do to break up the alliance so they fight us separately instead of working together.

Also we have to force that Vamp we pancake to do our paperwork as an official "liason" between us and the Vamps. Everyone so focused on not dying they forgot about the fate worse then death.

Saint is promoted, Kid is busy with Medic school and Macking scouts, and you dumb cunts killed White Bitch so now nobody can help us with it.
>>
>>1383439
> you dumb cunts killed White Bitch
Kill yourself faggot
>>
>>1383423
They have elves no Grenn. Elves also shoot you from out of earshot. We should be focusing on how to blind them.

Key point for night raids - Dragon swoops and ruins everyone's night vision with fire, Vamps come from behind

>White Bitch
>helping with anything after she betrayed the Company

Uh huh.
>>
>>1383439
>Expecting White Bitch to help after being outed as a traitor

Anon are you thinking eith your dick again? Are you seriously suggesting that someone who sold out the Company and stabbed us in the face is going to be anything but a fucking nuisance at best or actively sabotaging the defense at worst?
>>
>>1383439

I think you underestimate the value of the hostage. They won´t risk a siege and the possibility of the heir dying if they can help it. Wasting as much as time as possible will give us an advantage with defense building and such.

Other than that, your post is perfect.
>>
>>1372367
I had many concerns and fair is fair

Though the helmet explanation is weak, and I always assumed the stock photos you showed us were the armor in question(which would negate your stabability).

That being said this is too far on for me to really raise any issue. I shall enjoy reading what you have put forth QM, an again very engaging story(only reason why I was so salty).

>hiding from a dragon

that sounds fucking richer than rich, do u know how good the eyesight of a bird of prey is? Now lets bump that up to a fucking sky lizard with magical fucking powers. I'm sure if a dragon wants to find you, it's going to fucking find you

>Heal townsfolk
Do you not see how beneficial that is too us? How many townsfolk are left? How many doctors/healers you think they have outta that 10k. Think about how much manpower will be re-routed to solve the fucking fake plague issue. If anything it will waste some glorious time/cause extra casualties on their side. Specially if they are not only released all at once, but with some extra shit thrown in for confusion and dickery.
>Moat
I swear QM already said it was not even close to possible with the time, but a few traps are good

>White Bitch Apologist
Get out REEEEEEEE
>>
>>1388736
> Needing doctors to heal a fake plague

Are you a moron? I'm saying they won't kill them out of hand and that kind of ruins the trick.

> Sky Lizard is magic and unbeatable

We found him in their dungeons. Clearly they can handle dragons.

> Moat idea

Fuck moats build trebuchets.

> Killing White Birch

And our unborn child. I'm so glad the dice ruin every chance with Kiranova.

Let's Fuck squishy the Vampire instead.
>>

> Needing doctors to heal a fake plague
Are YOU a moron? Its a logistical nightmare regardless of REAL or FAKE plague. The point is to cause confusion, which it fucking would en masse. Some weaker moral people might start outright faking sick and increase panic(depending on rolls i guess). You are really downplaying a plague scare dude. It would(unless shit rolls) cause some massive panic and moral issues for sure.
>Sky Lizard is magic and unbeatable
Didn't even imply, I'm SAYING he would be hard to fucking avoid u dingus. Again its not even forest so the scouting parties would be sitting ducks for a dragon. They would have to either dedicate a large portion of anti air units to combat his harassment, or heavily risk never seeing that princeling again. Unless like the QM has been hinting they have some sort of mobile air unit(s) that can combat a dragon. All we know is that the dragon is strong enough to outright fuck an entire battalion(term could be wrong but decent sized force) of crossbowmen(fuckingelves) and infantry men in 1 swoop. Scouting parties would be completely fucked without decent support.

>Trebuchets
Long as we have the manpower they are amazing weapons, but Id pref some good pitfalls and collapsing structures to muck up formations/seperation from commanding officers. Smoke screen would be perfect for any kind of visual signals. PANIC

>Vampire fucking
White Bitch was trash, Saint is a useful sister of battle, and Vampires are for people with absolutely 0 taste(see joker).
Lets just finally go celibate and focus on working as closely with our Dark Father without him making us a puppet. Victory Blowjobs from Saint is ok, but im 90% sure her magical power will be stronger if she stays pure.
