You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were staying out in a stable behind the local inn. There were numerous reasons for this. The first and most obvious reason was that you didn't really have any money, and even if you did have enough to afford a room, you didn't really the see point of such luxuries or frivolity. Second, considering you were carrying a direwolf pup with you, it certainly wasn't allowed inside the inn and it was far too young to leave unsupervised.

The third and final reason, you suspect, was that the inn keeper was afraid your very presence would scare the other guests. Not that you blamed him. The Black Templars certainly did nothing to discourage all the rumors and stories about them. It was all a badge of honor, really.

What did put you at a bit of unease though, was Morgan's presence. Why she decided to stay in the stable with you, you had no idea, and you suspect that she didn't fully know the reason herself. However, as you awake in the morning, you see her playing with the wolf pup as it playfully snapped at her fingers.

"He's male, in case you were wondering." Morgan grinned when she saw you get up.

Oh, that was nice to know.

"And you didn't name him yet, either." Morgan frowns as she picks up the pup and it starts barking happily.

Right, there was that, too.

Anyways, Idon’t think we should put our wolf in the kennels with the other dogs. Not for its safety, but for the other dogs. Dire wolves pups probably experience huge growth spurts and I wouldn't be surprised if ours becomes the Alpha in the kennels in less than a week.

You pause for a moment, trying to think of a suitable name, and then it hits you. You dig into your pack and pull out a small tattered book. You flip though the pages, with Morgan looking on wonderment.

"How do you flip through a book so fast with those gauntlets on?" She wonders aloud.

You rub two armored fingers together. Practice, lots of practice. You then continue flipping through until you find the page you're looking for and hand the book to Morgan.

"...Romulus?" She frowns.

You cock your head to the side, wondering if she was unhappy withe the name choice.

"N-no, I'm not saying it's a bad name or anything!" Morgan assures you. "I just... never figured you to be a fan of the Classics."

You shrug and point to the book again and then to your chest, indicating that the book was something you personally enjoyed quite a lot. And to any sharp eyed observer, the way the pages were worn and torn at the edges would indicate how well used the book was.

"Huh, I didn't really expect that." Morgan smiles just a bit as she plops Romulus into your arms. "From what I heard, I expected guys like you to be really grumpy all the time."

You shake your head. Only when it came to purging the unfaithful and unclean. You then point to her and give a thumbs up. She didn't seem to be either, to her credit.

"Um, thanks?" Morgan frowned, unsure if you were complimenting her or not. "Anyways, I suppose we should get going to Eisenwand."

You pause. Eisenwand.

Morgan sighs as she seems to pick up on your confusion.

"The capital of the Frontier?" She rolls her eyes. "You came all the way out here and didn't know that?"

You tap a finger on your helmet. That fall probably messed with your memory.

"Sure, whatever you say." Morgan shakes her head, unconvinced. "Anyways, if we start walking, we can probably get there before noon. Unless you want to rent out a wagon?"

As you and Morgan walk down road, you start to slow your pace when you see a person lying in the middle of the road. Clearly injured.

"Help..." The man croaks.

"Wait." Morgan puts a hand on your chestplate to stop you, her other hand reaching for her bow. "Something's not right."

You turn to her to see what she was getting at.

"I don't smell any blood." Morgan narrows her eyes as she points at the man's hastily bandaged leg, stained heavily with what should be blood. "He's faking the injury."

"Well fuck, looks like we gotta do this the hard way." The man grunts as he stands up on his own two feet.

Two more strangers emerge from the trees beside him, and Morgan spins around when two more appear from behind, cutting off any means of escape.

"Really? Bandits?" Morgan groans as she points at you. "You guy must either be idiots or really damn desperate to try and mug a TEMPLAR."

"Wait, what?" The lead bandit hesitates.

Now was your chance. You quickly scan your opponents. All five bandits weren't particularly well armored, but they were armed with an assortment of swords and clubs. Not a big threat to your armor, but they could hurt Morgan and cause damage to you if they got close enough.

So far, their only advantage was numbers, but they had quite a few numbers.

Most blackpowder weaponry until the advent of the flintlock rifle was both unwieldy and finicky--and even flintlocks had their hiccups.

But that doesn't mean that it isn't cool.

For more reference, Gun Jesus Ian explains both wheellocks and a breechloading converted flintlock.

The bandit screams and twists his body just in the nick of time. Out of sheer dumb luck rather than any sort of skill or reflexes, your halberd thrust misses him. However, the point does catch the collar of his shirt, and he's dragged along with your weapon until you bury the point in the tree behind him. You catch a whiff of a very musky smell through your helmet.

"What you idiots standing there for?! Get him off me!" The leader shrieks.

Currently, the leader was nonlethally pinned to the tree with your halberd. You could pull it free to engage his two goons, but that would give hi a chance to slip away.

Then again, you were armored, and they were not. One of them was armed with a shoddy looking short sword, and the other a club which was more a chunk of metal haphazardly tied to a stick.

You manage to turn just in time as the bandit thrusts. His sword point strikes your chestplate head on and scrapes off. Of course, the bandit overcommits his lunge and practically falls at you, making it painfully easy to snatch the sword from his flailing arms and step back, letting the bandit fall flat on his face.

Before he even gets a chance to spit the dirt out of his mouth, you bring the sword stabbing down directly into his back.

"Aaaaah! AAAAAAH!" The remaining goon sputters as he tries to run, cradling his broken wrist.

Morgan casually lets her arrow fly, and it lands squarely in the fleeing bandit's back, causing him to topple over. He doesn't get back up again.

You nod in approval at her good shot.

"Thanks." Morgan turns away for a second, as if she didn't want to show you her expression.

Before you could inquire, Romulus comes scrambling up, barking at the still unconscious bandit leader, correctly deducing him to be a threat. Smart wolf.

"Nothing but a few coppers between them." Morgan sighs as she walks up to you, tossing the said few copper pieces up and down in her hand. "You know, if we drag this guy to Eisenwand alive, we could probably get a bounty on him. Bandits have started becoming a seriously problem for them lately."

She then turns to look at you, only to see your normal, scowling helmet.

"I mean, it's your call. I wouldn't want to drag this guy all the way there under my own power, either." She shrugs.

With a bit of rope, it was easy to tie up the bandit leader and leave enough rope to serve as a leash to tug (or drag) him along. A quick slap to the face from Morgan was enough to wake him up, and a glare from you was more than enough to convince him to follow you two.

Romulus of course kept an eye him, continually growling at him.

That really just left you and Morgan, walking down the lonely road together.

You look over to Morgan, and she looks back at you, curious.

"Yes?" She blinks.

"Why?" You ask.

Morgan stops dead in her tracks.

"W-what?" She gasps.

"Huh?" The bandit leader, still groggy from the headbutt, slurs.

You point to her and then back at yourself, and then down the road.

"O-oh, you're asking why I'm traveling with you like this?" Morgan's gaze turns away momentarily. "Well... I have my reasons. Seen too many young adventurers get themselves killed out here, you know?"

You get the feeling that she isn't being totally truthful, but her answer is genuine enough that you feel you can still trust her.

"So... ya got a crush on him, then." The bandit leader surmises.

Morgan's punch is so lightning quick that even you couldn't catch it. There's a loud, meaty SMACK as her fist contacts his face, and for the second time that day, the bandit leader is knocked out cold.

"Ohmygosh, I'm so sorry." Morgan gasps when she realizes what she's done. "I'll carry him if-"

You shake your head and haul the unconscious bandit over your shoulder like a sack of grain. Probably better this way, anyways.

"If you insist..." Morgan sighs.

It's only barely another hour of walking until you finally see the tops of buildings cresting over the horizon. The forest gives way to show a rather large, walled off city sitting just across a wide and crystal clear river.

Another detail you noticed was that the city seemed to be built in concentric rings, each separated by a wall. Far back, the inner walls seemed to be built rough and dark, out of heavy stone and steel. Nothing too different from standard military fortifications. However, the outer walls began to become lighter and more... aesthetic.

And in between each wall was a thick concentration of buildings, pushed up together and peeking over the walls like tall grass. It as certainly a very densely populated city, that was for sure.

"Welcome to Eisenwand." Morgan explains. "The jewel of the Frontier."

It's poorly fortified against external attacks. The walls are high, but purely-circular rings are a questionable choice for defending against a siege - no part of the wall is able to support another.

You nod. It looked fairly pretty. Horribly designed to fend of a prolonged siege but.... functional enough.

"Yeah, it's changed quite a bit over the years." Morgan nods and squints. "Oh, it looks like they expanded another ring out since the last time I was here."

You tilt your head at her curiously. She didn't seem particularly fond of the place.

"Huh? Oh no!" Morgan shakes her head. "I just don't feel comfortable around lots of people, and, well, that's what cities are, right?"

You point the side of the road. She's always free to wait out here.

"N-no, I can keep up with you." Morgan assures you, pulling her hood over her head.

The two of you continue through one of the city's gates. The pair of guards only give you the most cursory of glances, simply letting you pass freely. Such lax security was maddening!

"The guards see weird stuff coming through the gates all the time. They're not going to get suspicious about an adventurer dragging a bandit it." Morgan explains, keeping you on track.

Romulus meanwhile goes into a curiosity fueled overdrive, his tail wagging furiously and his head turning in all a manner of directions as he takes in all the sights and smells of the city. And what a city it was. People were everywhere, and not just humans. You could also see a number of Dwarves, Elves, and even the occasional Orc. Well, they weren't causing any sort of disturbance now, so you ignore their nervous (or furious, in the cases of the elves) stares.

Morgan finally leads you to a City Guard station. The guard captain on duty there waves a clear stone over the captured bandit leader's face. The stone then glows a dull green. Satisfied, the captain hands Morgan a small coin sack. This all goes wordlessly, like it was business as usual.

"Five gold pieces!" Morgan marvels as she tosses the sack up and down in her hand. "Guess they're really cracking down."

You nod as you look at your surroundings, still trying to get your bearings. Like every city, it was so densely packed it was impossible to tell where anything was.

"You looking for something in particular?" Morgan asks as she pockets the coin sack.

You point to yourself, or more specifically, the Black Templar emblem adorned on your pauldron.

"Oh, I see." Morgan nods. "You want to go see your fellow Templars? Follow me."

Morgan takes the lead again, though this time, she leads you OUT of one of the other city gates, into the vast grassland beyond.

"Sorry, your monastery isn't actually in the city proper." Morgan tells you as she leads you down the road. "The Elven Quarter alone would have rioted if that were the case, so the Princess said the Templars would have to set up outside of the city limits.

Sure enough, up ahead, you could see a standard Black Templar fortress monastery, strategically placed on top of a small hill. It was a singular keep surrounded by a high and thick wall, with one central tower jutting out from the center, giving a commanding view over the surrounding area.

"Are you sure that's a monastery?" Morgan asks you as you draw closer.

You nod.

"It's like you guys are always expecting trouble."

You nod again.

"Guess I shouldn't be surprised." Morgan sighs.

Romulus simply looks on in awe.

Waiting for you at the front gate was a knight in towering armor, built like a boulder. You recognized that armor as that of Marshal Havel, the Templar in charge of overseeing the Frontier.

"Ah, so the Champion has finally arrived." Havel rumbles, his grip on his massive war mace firm but relaxed. "It's good to see another battle brother here."

You look around, wondering where everybody was. All you could see were serfs and neophytes tending to the monastery.

"As you can see, our presence here is quite... limited." Havel grumbles. "The Orcs in the North are beginning to make moves so the Grand Master as called for another Crusade. I'm afraid it will just be you and me for now."

Morgan then coughs.

"And the lady, as well." Havel adds. "Though I wonder. The Grand Master had promised to send a Champion of great merit. Forgive me for my curiosity."

Ah, you get what he was asking for. Proof of your deeds.

You reach into your pack and pull out a manticore's claw. One of your first kills as a Champion, and you were still rather proud of it. Well, technically you shouldn't be allowed to feel pride in personal achievement but you'll take a small exception to this one. Romulus gives it an experimental sniff before growling at it.

"Ah, then it seems my concerns were unfounded." Havel says simply.

"Wait, you took down a manticore before?!" Morgan gasps. "You never told me!"

You look at her and shrug.

"Right, I never asked." Morgan groaned.

"In any case, the forest out here has no shortage of monsters to slay." Havel continues. "But the city does regularly put bounties, so it would benefit you and this monastery to pay attention to them."

You nod. Carrying out your duty was well and all, but armor and swords didn't forge themselves.

"You are free to use this monastery's facilities as you wish. Such is your right as a Templar." Havel then turns to Morgan. "Since you appear to be his companion, such rights extend to you as well, as long as you accompany him."

"Um, thanks." Morgan nods somewhat nervously.

"In fact..." Havel pauses. "We do have a problem of sorts in our monastery. One that you and your companion seem well suited to handle."

A problem? You immediately reach for your halberd.

"That's not quite necessary." Havel stops you. "But, well, a certain person has taken up residence in the library and it's rather... difficult dislodging them."

"A certain person?" Morgan raises an eyebrow. "Someone's barricaded themselves in your library?"

"Of a sorts." Havel sighs, "Perhaps it will make more sense if I were to show you."

Havel leads the both of you down the monastery's wide and black halls. Serfs parted ways respectfully as you passed. Finally, you are led to a mighty pair of heavy oak doors.

"Please prepare yourself for the challenge that lies ahead." Havel says grimly as he swings the doors open.

And there, sitting crossed legged atop of a pile of books and surrounded by a dozen floating ones, was a young, green haired girl. A purple cape was wrapped around her like a makeshift blanket and her nose was buried in a rather large tome. In fact, she was so entranced she didn't even notice you, Morgan, Romulus, and Havel were present.

"She doesn't look so bad." Morgan whispers.

"She is a terrifying foe." Havel grumbles as the taps his mace against the stone floor, grabbing the girl's attention.

"Oh, hi!" The girl says cheerfully as she looks up from her book. "My name's Nino! It's nice to meet you!"

You can see Havel visibly shudder. You wonder just how formidable this little girl was..
