/qst/ - Quests

Welcome to Spirit Detective Quest! This quest, as the title suggests, takes place in the world of Yu Yu Hakusho, though it does not take place during the events of the show. You're a young highschooler, one who will find himself granted the title of Spirit Detective, and will be charged with tracking down demons and other supernatural criminals.

>Rules

Each time I make an update, there will be a ten minute window in which you can vote between various options I have provided. Write-ins are accepted and encouraged, but I do reserve the right to veto them. Once ten minutes have passed, the option (or suitable combination) with the most support will win.

You can choose multiple options, but be mindful of when that doesn't take any sense. Saying you want to go talk to someone and then talk to someone else in one post doesn't make much sense.

Also, in combat, I may veto selecting multiple options depending on how feasible that seems.

As far as combat, you will roll to attempt different options. I will not tell you what the number needed is ahead of time, so use your heads and balance risk/reward. Sometimes, you should take riskier options if they can yield greater payoff. Other times, it's best to play it safe. Use your judgement.

This is not Dragonball, and while there are sometimes ways to bring back the dead, they are few and far between, so do not assume that anybody you kill/let die will be coming back.

I hope you all have fun.

You walk side by side with Stephanie as you continue deeper into the tunnels, Aria following behind with an unconscious Damon in her arms. She looks to be having a bit of difficulty carrying him, but is managing just fine, freeing you and your fellow Detective to lead the way and be on the lookout for your last foe.

"Spirit World Intelligence didn't have any information on Kainsokan's powers," Stephanie reminds you as you advance. "We need to be on our guard, especially since we're down a fighter."

She glances back toward Damon, a thoughtful expression on her face. "I'm surprised he's not a Detective. He fought really well back there."

"He's been training hard," you assure her.

"Well, it shows," she says before looking forward again. "He seems to have a lot of Spiritual Power. Honestly, I'm kind of surprised that Koenma hasn't hired him as a detective already."

"So," you say, changing the subject. "Do you have enough energy left for another Spirit Gun?"

She shakes her head. "Probably not. I've used two already today. There's a small chance I could scrape together enough energy for a third, but I don't want to count on that. What about you?"

>A. You think you have one more in you

"I think I've got one more in me," you tell her. "But, if we work together, neither of us will have to use the Spirit Gun."

Stephanie smiles. "Yeah, we're both Spirit Detectives, right? One little demon should be no problem."

"That's the spirit!" Aria tells the two of you cheerily. "Just one more to go, so let's get to it!"

Before long, you find yourselves in one last cavern, one far less empty than the ones you've come across before.

A desk sits on the left side of the cavern, covered in stacks of papers, as well as what looks to be various wrappers from whatever foods the cavern's inhabitants may or may not have been eating.

A series of surgery tables and desks covered in blood are scattered about the cavern, most empty, but two or three still holding bodies that are no longer strapped down.

What really draws your attention, however, is the massive, glass orb sitting at the back of the cavern, empty save for white, swirling shapes moving around within it.

"Wait, what's that on the table?" you ask, pointing toward one of the blood-covered surfaces.

Stephanie looks over, eyes moving to the object you've pointed out. It takes a moment after that for you to realize you've seen it before. On the night you moved to town, such a tool was used by a demon to rip the soul from your body.

"Terrible Tongs," Aria gasps.

If the demons had those, then that might mean....

You turn to stare at the bodies lying on the tables, realizing that none of them have any significant injuries, certainly nothing that would be fatal. But maybe they aren't really dead, maybe they're just empty.

Your eyes go wide as you look at the glass orb once again, observing the swirling shapes moving within as they briefly take vaguely humanoid forms before once more taking on the appearance of swirling mist.

Looking toward Stephanie, you can tell that she's begun putting the pieces together, too. But you also notice someone rushing right toward her.

Unsure if Stephanie will react to a warning fast enough, you rush over to her and shove her out of the way, knocking her back as the charging figure zooms past her, stopping and turning to face you and your fellow detective.

As Steph falls onto her backside, her head turns toward the attacker.

You're unsurprised to see a green-haired, humanoid creature of slightly below-average height, glaring at you with bright, yellow eyes.

"So, the others failed after all," he growls. "Damn you, Silisha, you brought these detectives right to us!"

"That's right," Stephanie tells him as she picks herself up off the ground. "We've already killed your friends, so unless you want to end up like them, come quietly!"

The demon regards her for a moment before beginning to laugh. "You really think I'm just going to let you kids arrest me? Keep dreaming! You may have killed the others, but it looks to me like you're down a fighter, and I'm willing to bet that you two tired yourselves out a bit in the earlier fights. You don't have a prayer."

"It's your funeral," you tell the demon, taking out your switchblade and dropping into a defensive stance.

"No," the creature replies. "It's yours."

He rushes forward, grabbing your wrist as you attempt to swing the switchblade at him, and punching you in the jaw with enough force to send you flying away, crashing onto one of the thankfully empty tables.

Stephanie doesn't fare much better. When the demon strikes you, she rushes it and hits it in the side of the head with a jump kick, managing to send him staggering away, but as she rushes toward him again, he leaps over her head, landing behind her, and raising his right hand, palm facing the ceiling. As you watch, some odd, spherical object appears above his hand. You can't tell what it is, but it almost looks like a liquid.

"You pack a punch, girl," he tells her. "And soon, I'll be packing an even bigger one."

He throws the orb, and Stephanie dives out of the way, causing the projectile to strike one of the tables, breaking apart and covering it like snot, or slime, or something gross like that.

As Stephanie tries to get back up, the demon creates another orb, getting ready to attack her again.

Hopping off of the table, you grip your switchblade tightly, trying to focus some of your Spirit Energy into it as you rush across the room, charging at the demon in an effort to stop it from hitting Stephanie.

The creature's head snaps your way, and he makes a backhanded throw with his sphere, which sails over your head as you drop and slide beneath it, getting back to your feet and closing the remaining distance.

Kainsokan throws a right hook, but you move to the side quickly enough to avoid it, swinging the blade, which now glows faintly with a blue light, toward the demon's face.

Blood flies from his cheek as you manage a shallow cut. Unfortunately for you, he moves his head fast enough to avoid taking a serious blow. You're a bit less lucky, as his knee slams into your gut, forcing you to hunch over. He grabs you by the back of your shirt, and spins, hurling you like a ragdoll across the cavern.

Stephanie is back on her feet, and closing in for another round.

Rolling with your landing, you end up in a crouch, and throw yourself forward once again, rushing into the fray and joining Stephanie in her attack on Kainsokan.

Before you can reach the combatants, Kainsokan manages to grab Stephanie, and spins around, kneeling as he slams her back-first into the ground. Crying out in pain from the impact, Stephanie is nonetheless able to kick the demon off of her.

As Stephanie rolls back, and Kainsokan gets back on his feet, you leap into the air, stabbing downward with your switchblade and aiming for the back of his neck. He spins around at the last second, grabbing your wrist, but while he's focused on that, you knee him in the jaw, forcing him to relinquish his grip and step back.

As Stephanie rushes in to attack, Kainsokan leaps backwards over one of the surgery tables, prompting both you and Stephanie to give chase. He holds his hand up, creating another of those orbs as you and your partner land on the table, tossing it toward you. You leap above it, and the table becomes gooey mess as both you and Stephanie shoot through the air toward the demon.

He moves back yet again, and you land in a crouch. Stephanie rushes forward, throwing a right hook that Kainsokan barely manages to block. He counters with an uppercut, knocking the girl back as you rush forward. You throw several punches and kicks that he manages to parry before stabbing at his chest with your knife. He turns away, but you manage a shallow cut into his left shoulder.

Growling with anger, he leaps above you as you attempt another strike, kicking you in the back of the head and sending you sliding face-first across the ground, right in the direction of a charging Stephanie, who dives over you and somersaults forward, leaping up with an uppercut that sends your enemy staggering back.

Rising into a crouch, you turn to see Stephanie continuing to push the demon back, and you grip the blade tighter as you once again rush forward to join the attack.

Glancing back to you, Stephanie drops into a crouch as Kainsokan throws a punch at her, giving you a clear opening to throw your switchblade right into his right shoulder, causing him to cry out in pain.

Stephanie kicks his right leg out from under him, and you rush in with a jump kick to the face, sending him crashing to the ground, and sliding into one of his own medical tables with enough force to put a hole in it.

Stephanie rises beside you, and the two of you take a moment to breathe as you look toward the motionless demon.

"Nice work, kid," she tells you.

The demon is down, for the moment. Still, you don't see any reason to just assume that he won't get back up. Making a gun with your right hand, you point at Kainsokan, gathering up your energy, and unleashing it with a yell.

"SPIRIT GUN!"

A beam of light shoots from your fingertip, incinerating the table the demon's stuck in, and drawing howls of pain from the demon as your blast scorches his body. He lets out a final, agonized scream before going still once more.

Fatigued, you fall into a crouch, and Stephanie kneels beside you, placing a hand on your shoulder.

"Okay," you tell her. "Thank you."

Stephanie gives you a nod, then begins moving over toward Aria. You take the time to close your eyes, relaxing for a bit as the girls work on what to do next. It's only when you hear the sound of shattering glass that you open up your eyes again, watching as the souls fly from their glass prison and race away, most of them heading through the ceiling, but one or two more heading for the bodies on the tables.

A man who looks to be in his mid thirties, and another who looks to be somewhere around the age of twenty both sit up, looking around in confusion and fear. But when they look toward you and the others, they seem to be relieved.

"You-you saved us," the younger man says with wonder.

"I don't know how you beat those monsters, but God bless you both," the older man says, climbing off of the table. "Now, is there any chance you can help us get out of here?"

"Of course," Stephanie says with a smile. "Aria, can you lead them back to the surface? I want to look around here a bit more."

"Alright, I'll be back soon," your assistant tells her before looking at the men. "Follow me, boys."

Thanks for running, would Kainsokan have tried to sneak attack us if we hadn't finished him off, or was he done regardless?
>>
>>1367252
Hopefully tomorrow

>>1367255
Oh, hell yeah, had you not killed him when you did, he had several nasty surprises to bust out
>>
>>1367262
Okay. Lesson learned then.
We're gonna stomp Semi-Perfect Cell.
>>
>>1367262
Then it's a good thing we shot him while he was down. What did the slime he shot out even do, was it an acid type of thing, or was it just for holding people in place?
>>
>>1367290
HAH!

>>1367293
Kainsokan can create a yellow orb that, when thrown, will expand into a mass of goop and cover foes, trapping them in place, and slowly draining away their life energy. Once the target is drained, the goop uses that energy to take on a vaguely humanoid form, powered by the victim’s life-energy, and entirely under Kainsokan’s command. If he’s in a real bind, Kainsokan can call that goop back to him and absorb it into his body, taking the life energy from it.

Missed the quest sadly but I thought I'd throw out an idea that was given last thread at the very end:

Well, to make something "more exciting" we apparently have to ignore everything that's "already been done." So, no Spirit gun, sword, or shield. I think it would be asking too much to use our powers of "meh" to throw out a power/spirit negation technique. Maybe spirit rope? Trip/tie people, use it to swing/maneuver the battlefield? A dispersed field of spirit energy that helps us see/feel incoming attacks and eventually react in the most unconcerned manner conceivable?

Another Idea would be to play off how we focus energy in our fists, weapon, and feet. Leave streaks of energy behind, like an after image. Maybe they explode when an enemy, but not us/our team, OR they prohibit movement, again not ours/our team, to control the battlefield
>>
>>1368221
Just realized where I really got the last idea from: the intro to Iron fist, so to add on to that, maybe we can turn it into a focused thing later down the way, if we spell out some sort of kanji or literally a spell, we can shut down the battlefield somehow.

Intro for those that may not have seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ApQet-KnNo

Aria exits the cavern, the two humans following close behind her, each one appearing quite antsy. Understandable, given the circumstances. With all the demons cleared out, however, there should be nothing to worry about. Aria can certainly manage to guide them to the surface. In the meantime, you figure it best to try and help Stephanie locate any information there may be about what these people were up to.

Stephanie starts things off by going over to the desk, and beginning to sift through papers. There are plenty of them, so your help would probably speed the process up. Still, there's no reason you can't do something else.

>A. Go retrieve your switchblade

>B. Round up any Terrible Tongs you can find

>C. Go help Stephanie look through papers for evidence

>D. Search Kainsokan's body

>E. Something else
>>
>>1369208
>D. Search Kainsokan's body
Let's see what he's got.
>>
>>1369243
Approaching the body of the fallen demon, you first retrieve your switchblade. Stowing the weapon in your pocket, you then proceed to search your fallen enemy's corpse for anything of interest.

You don't find much in the way of evidence, but you do find a rather large roll of money tucked in his pants pocket. Removing the rubber band, you proceed to count out the money, and are completely shocked to find over fifty thousand dollars.

>A. Keep the money

>B. Give half to Stephanie

>C. Give some to Stephanie, and some to Damon

>D. Give some to Stephanie, some to Damon, and some to Aria

>E. This might count as evidence, give it to Koenma when you have the chance

>F. Go and help search through the papers

>G. Something else
>>
>>1369291
>E. This might count as evidence, give it to Koenma when you have the chance
Get the tongs. Do they only work on humans?
>>
>>1369291
>E. This might count as evidence, give it to Koenma when you have the chance.
Also get the tongs.
>>
>>1369295
As far as you know, yes
>>
>>1369295
>>1369299
This might be evidence. You decide to keep it and give it to Koenma, or have Aria deliver it to him when the chance presents itself.

"This is bad, William," Stephanie comments as she looks over papers at the desk. "Really, really bad."

>A. What is it?

>B. Tell her to call you Will

You walk over to the girl, looking at the papers she has scattered across the table. You see names and amounts of money written on them. Interestingly enough, a lot of the names don't seem, well, real. They honestly sound like demon names when you read them aloud.

"These bastards were ripping the souls out of people's bodies, then selling off the empty shells," Stephanie explains to you, fury in her voice.

>A. But why?

>B. Does she know where the bodies were sent?

>C. Maybe Spirit World Intelligence can track the buyers down if you turn over these papers

>D. Tell her about the money you found

>E. Something else

"Do you know where the bodies were sent?" you ask her.

She shakes her head, a look of extreme frustration on her face. "No. Names of customers are given, and so is the amount paid, but no locations. All we have to go on is customer names and physical descriptions of the empty bodies."

"Well, if we turn over these papers, maybe Spirit World Intelligence can track down the buyers," you suggest.

Stephanie sighs. "I guess we don't have much other choice. Let's grab some of these papers and get out of here. Aria can get them to Spirit World for us."

"Oh, before we go," you say, taking the roll of cash from your pocket. "I found this."

Stephanie looks at it, shrugging. "Some money they got from selling the bodies. Why are you showing me this?"

>A. You were thinking about turning it over to Koenma

Figured we either turn it in, if that's procedure, or split it if there's no good reason not to for whatever reason. Shitty source but a useful resource.
>>
>>1369426
>A. You were thinking about turning it over to Koenma

Thanks for running, Som. Just popped into the thread. Slow turnout tonight I'm guessing, just wanted to wrap up this arc, or a bit of both?

Also, I propose we split the cash between us 5. If course, make sure we and Damon don't present the money to our parents all at once. Don't want them or the IRS to raise an eyebrow at our sudden gains.

I'm guessing a few mid level demons managed to snag some empty bodies before we wrecked shop.
I'm kinda hype.
>>
>>1370173
Among others, there were at least half a dozen souls in that orb, and only two bodies still in the cavern. You don't know if anything was done to other souls, bodies, or if this is the first place they've set up shop. Let's just say Will might find himself in over his head before long

What do you guys want William to look like?
I personally feel like Will would have kind of tired eyes and thick eyebrows, and a slightly angular jawline. Like the kid who looks like he could have been a half decent athlete if he ever gave a shit.

I notice there's no real love for Stephanie going around. I'm waiting for more girls to show up but I wonder why no one really seem interested in her
>>
>>1373731
She's cool and all, but I think people aren't that interested in her because we haven't bee in and probably won't be in close proximity to her for extended periods of time.
Aria has the advantage of being first girl and somebody we're gonna be around for a while.
Then there's our classmate, gonna be seeing a lot of her too.
We probably won't be seeing much of Steph outside of missions.
Shame too because she's more than proven herself worthy of some type of admiration.

I'm wondering if we're gonna get mixed up with demons again in this quest or if the players learned their lesson from the first detective quest Som ran
