As they say, festivities are best enjoyed when you’re not picking your dirt-covered self off the ground. The phrase “Cultural Festival” normally would evoke images of fun events and poorly-run food stalls, but unfortunately, this one is a collaborative effort with Nishishio High, a place whose surrounding locale and customs leave you completely disinterested; the taste that it leaves in your mouth have pushed any related thoughts to the back of your mind.

You think about this as you pivot on your right foot, quickly hiding behind a tree. A patch of grass besides you explode right after.

What are you doing here? You try to remember the conversation you had with Kururi, the one that lasted for a few seconds. The one where she asked as Class President if you wanted to sign up for anything, and you offhandedly obliged. You mean, you had more important things to focus on, like preparing for an idol event. Clearly more important, right? The only reason you signed up for this was so you could get some new tricks up your sleeve, but this is...

Interrupting your thoughts, the bark a few inches above your head vaporizes and everything horizontal to it. You only catch a glimpse of the laser before you dive away. Sliding down a steep hill, you crash through bushes and weave between rocks.

Lanky trees stick out of the ground, extending far above, where the canopy scatters entering sunlight.

Soon, the whir of machinery overwhelms your hearing once more. You have no idea where Denkiko Mita is, but she knows where you are.

Panting, you pick yourself up.

Steel spheres fly from behind you, sides jutting out to expose rotors and weaponry. As far as you can tell, some are equipped with lasers and others some kind of propulsion gun. You can tell because while you jump away, you watch as they almost clip you. At this rate, you’ll only lose as she whittles your strength away.

You slam your foot down onto the ground and swivel around, psi welling around you. On your backswing, you send forth waves of Shiba’s magic. The air pulsates and ripples, smashing into one of the drones. The first one caught has its wing torn off, its body sputtering as it spirals down; the other two close themselves up as your attacks land.

They bounce back, tearing into the greenery behind them before opening back up again.

“This is no good,” you mutter.

You need to find her.

You spread your psi field far and wide, attempting to cover the entire arena. But... you can’t find her. Your radar is returning nothing, which leaves you absolutely frustrated.

All you can find are dead spaces, areas without any form of psi whatever.

And that tells you nothing.

These things have to come from somewhere, so simply, all you have to do is to follow them back.

Unfortunately, that means running into as many of them as possible. This is going to suck.

239/300 - Illusion (Anporin)

Your psi rumbles, and the world around you distorts—but only for the outside. Your clone is more like what would happen if someone would look at you while crossing their eyes after getting their head knocked around a few times. Only blur that melds into you, it does its job well as a laser fires at you and misses by a couple feet.

55

Waves of undulating pressure tear apart machine after machine. Along the way, you grab one to see if there’s some GPS or some other navigational device, and what you find is nothing.

Not even a battery.

You toss it aside in a hurry, and keep on running.

62

As the number of enemies pick up, your supply of psi drains. You feel yourself closing in, minute after minute, until you make it to an overhang. The ground stops here. Dirt and grass teeter over the edge, trees that grow over lean back to stay in balance. It’s almost three stories high, and at the bottom of it is a girl staring up.

She waves, and then she starts running.

You have no time to waste. You slide down.

[52]

Your feet grind against the dirt as you make your descent, your speed picking up to a dangerous amount. At this rate, you might actually break something important, a realization you make and act on right before you would crash into solid rock.

[92]

Instinctively, a barrier flies out as you hit it, your body jolting as you feel the impact. You fly over... and land once more, surfing down the side with your barrier. Slowly, your feet begin to phase through your psi.

Didn’t you learn your lesson a long time ago already?

Just in the nick of time, you clear the landing as your barrier gives way.

Right into the feet of Mita, who leaps a few feet into the air... and stays there.

“Feeling tired?” she asks, wearing an expression that’s being asked to be wiped off.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” you say, “That’s cheating.”

“It’s not cheating,” she says, “If anything, you’re cheating.”

You palm a rock as you push up on your legs, “Making robots, force fields, flying, that seems like cheating to me” you say.

“Making robots? I wish,” she scoffs as said drones approach, “They’re expensive, you know. But, I’m still making a p - r - o - f - i - t.” Mita finishes that last sentences with a little melody.

Or she would’ve, if you didn’t interrupt her with a rock. It hits her barrier, startling her a little, and you follow it up with Perfect Pitch. The stone tears against it, and you feel as your psi comes into contact with hers—it’s generated by the two devices besides her.

“Really?” she says, flying away, her altitude constant.

Oh. “Really,” you say.

Lasers and chunks of wood cut lines through the air, whizzing past you. You’re almost out, but you... have an idea.

“It’s over, give it up!” she says.

15/300 - Tempo (Nachi)

Your psi seeps through her barrier, and then you blast pulses of energy.

In an instant, she drops down alongside all of her drones, falling on her backside.

“W-what!?” she says, her psi flowing again.

You watch as the drones behind you sputter and shake, trying to pick themselves up again.

So close to victory. You close in to end it.

“H-heyeyey! We can talk about this, right?” Mita says, backing off.

“Sure, after.”

She jumps in the air, her feet bounces off of air for a second, and then falls back down to when you grab arm.

Denkiko Mita’s Psi Signature Recorded.

Your psi hits hers, and you realize...

[30]

You’re too low to blast her. In the second you try to Psi Blast, Tempo stops and her drones fly up again. Mita, with surprise still on her face, swings back with a fist. Stepping back, you avoid it and feel the glance of a laser hit your side.

“Gah!” you cry out, rolling to the side.

The girl staggers to her feet, “You had me for a second. Give up, you’re done.”

You ball up your fists.

Damn it.

Damn it!

What happened?

You took the seat in front of the classroom so you’d work harder, right? You studied with Kaori so you wouldn’t fail any tests again, right? You’re here so you could be one step closer, right? So where, where did you slip up?

The ground underneath you kicks up, blasting you backwards toward the overhang from before.

“Give up, I don’t want to seriously hurt you.”

The scar that runs down your back aches, but it’s not over. It’s never over. How are you going to lose to a nobody?

No one should even know you could Psi Blast, but everyone should have a trick up their sleeve.

All you have are tricks, a cobbled together patchwork of skills that you try to climb your way to the top. Except for this.

“It’s nice to be determined, but there’s a line, you know,” Mita shakes her head.

You point yourself toward her and bite on your lip, bracing yourself. This is going to suck. “I've still got one last trick, though.”

You Psi Blast yourself.

Your legs sear with pain as you fly forward, and you clench down on your lip harder. Psi flows in and out, recursive and bleeding energy with each loop.

She flies up, seemingly anticipating your move, as if she knew what you were thinking—

[72]

—but it’s futile. You stop the loop when your psi is inside you again, and what little is left tears your body from your feet to the tips of your fingers as you grab onto her shield—

And blast yourself. The effects of the energy rips a hole through her shield as you pick up what little bit you have left. You swing your other hand at her, grabbing her by the collar.

“How’s this?”

There’s a blinding flash of light, and you are separated from her.

As you crash into the ground, the only senses that reach you is the iron from your blood and the fire on your limbs.

“The winner is: Katsuya Nekoyo from Tetsuyashi Academy!”

The horn blares.

Writing now, and all that

Good question. It's not a real net gain in energy. The feedback loop starts an exothermic reaction where the chemical bonds in your body are broken down to create energy. You are using yourself as fuel. I say this knowing full well perpetual motion machines and other thermodynamic-law-breaking devices are possible with magic.

Your name is Rin Ichigawa, but that’s not important right now.

What is important is that you have found someone incredibly suspicious walking down the street. You, of course, are perched atop a tree, looking outwards while branches hide you away.

The incredibly suspicious person is incredibly suspicious because she happens to incredibly match Saki’s and Kururu’s descriptions of that dangerous assailant.

You watch as the girl walks down the street, and suddenly turn the corner into a dark alleyway, almost unseen in the midst of the crowded sidewalk.

A cool breeze passes through the tree.

It’s always quieter up here, and the foregone conclusion to be drawn is that higher you go, the better it is to be.

It’s with this line of thought that you go higher.

You stare at the rooftops ahead, and you lightly put your right hand on your kendo sword. The space between you and your destination collapses, and with a simple step forward, you leave the tree and walk on the rooftop. Then, all is returned to what it once was with no one any the wiser.

Quietly, you follow the figure as she goes onward.

Until she stops a second later, pausing at seemingly nothing in particular.

“Do you always follow girls down alleyways?” she speaks up.

Busted. “Ah, that’s,” you fumble. Think! What should you say? “I thought you were familiar...?” No! What the heck was that!?

“My bad then,” you say, backing off. “Sorry about that, take care.”

We honestly don't even need to go after her right now. Our ability lets us spy on her at opportune moments and dictate the terms of engagement as far in our favor as possible.

“I can’t risk it,” you say, “I’m going to drag her up here.”

“Ichigawa...There’s another problem,” Kaori says, “You noticed, haven’t you?”

“Just Rin is fine,” you reply, “And I know, I’ll get caught with your attack, right? I’ll be A-Ok.”

“Hold your breath, and then get out of here.”

“What about you?” you say.

Kaori replies, “Someone has to keep her down.”

You look at her, and then you nod. You take a deep breath, and then you focus. To go where you can’t see, you must place your strength elsewhere. A place that can wield the power you fail to. Something stronger than you, sturdier than you.

You draw.

[87]

The space before you opens to reveal the girl... and Kururi. In between them is a sphere of whirling wind, air being devoured by a single point, a force dragging you forth with unimaginable strength.

You feel yourself being lifted forward, but you have to act, in this very moment.

[72]

In the moment before your gate closed, you grab Kaori by the arm and pull her along with you. You fly toward the girl and her attack, watching her react to you. Twisting the bamboo sword in your hand, you collapse the area in front, sending you two past it all. From a roll, you pick yourself up.

Kaori calls out, “Kururi!”

The target says, “You brought friends? How lowly. I wouldn’t expect anything less from a branch family member.”

“I don’t know them,” Kururi replies, steadily sidestepping away.

You whisper, “Um, I don’t think you can quietly drag away three people, can you?”

“I can’t hold my breath that long,” Kaori replies.

Is she... is she serious?!

Your target takes a step back. “If that’s how it is, then...” she says, finishing her sentences by rolling up her right sleeve. The bracelet around her wrist dangles, the deep blue gemstone in the center glowing with psi.

“Get back!” Kururi cries out, swinging out a cloth blade of some sorts... her ribbon?

The ground rumbles.

The road is far off, and in this clearing that is sparsely surrounded by trees, no one is nearby, a state you intend to uphold. Your hand knocks against the hilt of your bamboo sword, and you engulf it with your psi.

Eight points in space, carving out a cube from the world, separating this point of existence from everything around.

You draw.

[22]

It’s dark, the sky fractured as light from the sun tries to reach here. Before you can truly confirm if you’ve succeeded, from the earth erupts mounds of stone. Deep blue in color, massive bodies of rock shudder the ground beneath you, pulling themselves out slowly. Three of them separate you and Kaori. Golems...?!

Before one of them can free themselves, Kururi leaps forth, another piece of cloth slipping from underneath a sleeve. She charges it with psi, straightening it as she jumps. She spins, and her weapon cleanly cuts straight through its length, a path of molten rock left behind.

Another two rise behind you.

Kaori can handle herself.

You jump forward, disappearing in front of the golems and then behind them, running toward the target.

“Itsumo, you’re going to hurt someone!” Kururi calls out, “You can’t control them all!”

“Is that your envy talking?” the girl replies, holding her bracelet, “Go on, take your charm. You know you don’t stand a chance without it.”

Kururi slides a foot forward. “I don’t need it.” Dashing ahead, she dives, ducks, and cuts through golem after golem until one starts to form right before her. Instead of stopping, she uses it as a springboard, launching herself at your target, Itsumo...?

You see an opening—so you take it.

[30]

You flash forward right behind the girl, and you swing.

At the moment, you hear Itsumo say, “Did you forget?”

The air explodes from beside her. From seemingly nowhere, wind flows out like popped balloon and smashes into you. You land on your feet, wheezing from the unexpected hit. The explosion—it was at the exact place from before, the thing that sucked you through your own gate in the first place!

While you pick yourself up, you watch as Kururi swings her charged cloth sword on and on, her attacks deflected by both explosion and barrier.

When you look down, and you notice you are on fire.

It’s not even warm.

Nothing wrong with a small tan.

As Kururi continuously cleaves away at Itsumo, you take a step back.

Holding your bamboo sword with both hands, you steady yourself.

[67]

The space between collapses, and you strike! The blow whiffs her as she dodges in the last moment, who brings her arm back up. Another attack...!

Kururi sweeps down, her cloth sword smashing against the barrier again, this time whittling it away. You hear sound of psi vaporizing. As the air draws you closer again, you tap your sword.

Itsumo’s attack vanishes, and your attack connects. The wind is knocked out of her lungs as you pull back. Before she can even gather her senses, you attack again.

Blow connects after blow, the tip of your sword hitting against her joints and muscles, each strike forcing her lose her strength further and further. And on the tenth one, you pull back, and then slam into her abdomen.

The girl falls back onto a tree, unconscious.

“Did I... overestimate her?” you say.

The smell of flowers reaches your nose, and you hear a scream.

It doesn’t sound like Kaori.

Light breaks through before you even realize it, and you start to stumble away.

“Kururi,” you mutter, “I’ll...um, I’ll leave her to you. Don’t go anywhere, okay?”

“Mm,” she replies. You watch as what appears to be a barrier forms around her.

You cover your nose. Running to the sound of the noise—which seems to be changing every few seconds—you eventually find Kaori alongside a pile of unmoving stone and a few golems. One of them takes a swing at Kaori.

You try to open a gate, but you’re out of psi!

“Watch out!” you shout.

Kaori turns around, swinging a fist.

You hear a crack, then you see the psi that she’s reinforcing her hand with. She follows through, and demolishes the golem’s entire left side. The creature wobbles, then collapses. Kaori’s arm drops limply, and she looks around.

“Ahh~, A-ahh~!” she mumbles, pulling someone up and out of the rubble, “Are you... okay?~”

It’s a small child, and he’s crying. He rips himself away from Kaori, backpedaling.

...She’s... fine, you guess.

You don’t feel too great.

You better go do something.

Going up to them, you say, “Is everything okay?”

The boy backs up even further, “Mister, you’re on fire!”

“Ehn? I, uh, wouldn’t really say that.”

“No, Rin, your clothes...~” Kaori giggles.

“Huh?” you look at your arm, “Oh shoot—“

Quickly, you pat yourself down, and when that doesn’t work, you just throw off your blazer onto the ground and stomped out the flames.

Panting, you grow dizzier with every breath.

“Is... is everything okay?” you ask again, “Are you hurt? Is anyone else nearby?”

The boy answers, “I... don’t think so. I was with my mom and dad, and then it got dark, and then they were gone!”

“Don’t worry, we’ll help you find them,” you say while trying to not teeter over.

“U-um...” he says, cautiously eyeing Kaori.

You turn your head back to find her grinning creepily. She doesn’t seem like stopping anytime soon.

Rubbing your brow, you put on your best smile.

Forget volunteers, you’re dragging people into the Disciplinary Committee.
