/qst/ - Quests

In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and finally disbanded. Without them, world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations. Militaries were replaced by private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humanity; others remained peaceful, but faced fear and violence.

Overwatch was gone. But the world still needed heroes.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. Recently you encountered the re-formed Overwatch: a grand title for two ex-agents, Winston and Tracer, operating as outlaws out of an abandoned Watchpoint. Despite their down-and-out-status, or perhaps because of it, you were inspired to join them. You left your old life behind to become the first recruit of the new Overwatch.

Now you and Tracer are travelling the globe, defending the people of the world from harm and searching for potential agents to rebuild Overwatch. The world needs heroes. Maybe you can be one of them.

Hey Raven, heard that there were gonna be butts and Overwatch Quest. Couldn't decide which I wanted more so...

Maybe I just won't give time estimates, then?

Anyway, before we get started, let's take the opportunity to look over Seeker's equipment and decide if you want to make any changes. We haven't got a chance to use our Caduceus Core in action, but you might want to swap something else around.

Just past 30 minutes, going to call it there. Switching the Caduceus Core to Sword takes the vote.

Maybe i missed something, but last thread after the Flight Training, you said to pick an option to ask Tracer about, but the next post was talking to Torbjorn and Brigitte

Now i figure one of three things happened:

I would of asked in thread, but i was busy with personal matters, what happened?

That evening with Mercy, you discuss the different ways the Caduceus Core might be put to use. At first, you were enthusiastic about the ability to heal your allies -- but is overriding your EM shield actually worth it? Maybe it's better to prevent damage than heal it afterwards. Also, in your current role for the team, and a light armor loadout, maybe it's better if you plan for flanking attacks behind enemy lines.

Someday you might have a full team support loadout, or even a tank loadout -- get Brigitte to forge you some heavier armor, stand alongside Reinhardt in the front lines -- but not right now.

Together, with the tools in Mercy's medbay and a few "borrowed" from Winston's lab, the two of you manage to improvise a connection from the Core to your weapon in a way you can trigger in sword form.

When activated, it should amplify your sword's power while firing a pulse of biotics into your hand, healing your wounds and boosting your sword's damage output for a few moments. As though Mercy were there alongside you, healing and boosting you with twin streams.

"You'll be like the einherjar," Mercy says, smiling.

"The what? Ein-something?"

"Einherjar," she repeats, a little more precisely. "It's an old word for the warriors chosen by the valkyries."

"I'm proud to be your chosen warrior," you say, looking into her blue eyes, although it takes some nerve. You feel your face heat up a little as you say it, but sometimes the best way to meet something like this is head-on.

Mercy holds your gaze, smiling as she tucks a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. You can tell she's growing to trust you, maybe even rely on you -- she went to the effort of creating an entirely new technology for you, after all.

Although ... something occurs to you. "Wait a minute -- didn't valkyries choose warriors from dead people on the battlefield?"

Mercy clears her throat. "Ahem, well, yes, but ... it's all metaphorical, really."

"Okay, because I hope you're not implying anything," you say, joking. "I know you've got some powerful healing tech, but I don't intend to help you test just how powerful.

"Anyway, I think I get the idea, doc. Thanks. For everything." Without her taking care of the team, on and off the field, the whole thing might already be over. You and Tracer might be dead. Nobody would know about Anubis. The world would be who knows where?

You step away from Mercy and look over your weapon, now rigged with the device supporting the Caduceus Core. The embedded sphere glows a soft yellow, sometimes joined by a sharper, more intense blue. You give the sword a few easy practice swings, careful not to hit anything in the medbay. The Core leaves a small but visible afterglow of yellow as you swing.

"So how does this "boost my damage" exactly?" you say, looking back over your shoulder at Mercy.

"Nanomachines," she says.

"Right, I should have known."

"I could explain further, if you like, but it gets technical, with baryon interactions--"

"That's fine, thanks. Science isn't my strong suit. Just need to know that it works."

The two of you say your good-nights, and you head off to the crew quarters. Tracer is snoring lightly in her bunk across from yours as you bed down for the night.

Awesome, dude. Give the people something to believe in, they need it. Drop some sick beats! Get some practice with that sonic tech when you can. We'll be counting on you. Keep yourself safe out there. -S

Finished typing, you step outside and take a selfie of your own, giving a thumbs-up to the camera -- with the mask and hood on, of course. You wouldn't wear it if you didn't think it looked badass. You angle the camera up, both to catch some of the sunrise-colored sky, and to avoid distinguishing landmarks, just in case this photo gets intercepted. You attach it and send it on its way.

I'm already involved. I can handle myself. But thanks.

(It is nice, you think, that she cares enough to tell you to stay safe. You think she legitimately wanted you dead for a while there.)

Don't do anything crazy, ok? Like I said before, I know I'm the last guy who should be telling you that. Even so, I don't want something to happen. You're tough but none of us are invincible.

Just for kicks, you attach the same selfie of you giving the camera a thumbs-up in your hood and mask. It doesn't show anything about where you are -- she might guess what time zone you're in by the sun's position, but that's all.

For a moment, you toy with the idea of taking another selfie with the Watchpoint prominently in the background, and slapping a big Overwatch logo over it. That would be one way of telling Fareeha you're in Overwatch now.

You wonder how the daughter of Ana Amari will react to the news that the criminal she once dated ended up joining Overwatch before her.

Yeah, that's not a conversation you want to have anytime soon. You send off the message.

You spend the morning with Winston, talking about ideas for the team's command and control setup. Running the King's Row mission with some spare screens in the communications room was at least functional, but you're going to need something better in the future. A proper Mission Control, with comm stations for assistants and computers for analysts. Maybe you can even have a big rotating hologram of Earth.

You decide it should be set up:

>In the comm room, by Winston's lab. It already has a satellite linkup and control stations, although it's a little cramped.
>The big war room under the launchpad. It'll take more work, but there's tons of space, and it looks suitably intimidating for a command center.
>In a new room carved out from the mountain, although you'll need to get some working excavator drones first.

You, Winston, and a pair of utility drones start carrying over some of the spare computers and communication equipment into the war room and start setting up in the big empty space surrounding the old meeting table.

Bastion shows up and beeps at you. He seems to want to help, although he can't carry much with only one hand. You give him one end of a long cable and ask him to take it over the comm room so you can link up with the satellite. He trundles off obediently, trailing the cable after him.

Tracer arrives, ostensibly to help, although she spends most of the time nattering to Winston and blinking about to look at the next shiny piece of equipment, weaving a web of blue streaks through the room.

"Do you mind?" says Winston as she perches on his shoulders. "Some of us are trying to work here."

"C'mon, Winston, don't be a grump." She points at one of the screens. "Whatcha doing here?"

"I'm securing our network protocols with the communication satellite," he says. "Our link to it is vital. As long as the satellite is in orbit and functioning, we should be able to maintain contact with our field teams even through mild to moderate interference. Coverage is approximately 41% of Earth at any given time. So we might have trouble calling the other side of the world from here, which is I believe New Zealand."

"Hope the Kiwis don't run into trouble any time soon," Tracer says.

You look around the room. "This looks pretty good for just one morning's work. I think we can have this looking like a proper command center soon."

"It's almost like we're a real task force," you say. You look around at the cords lying around on the ground, the handful of computer screens. "A little under-budget, maybe, but still."

"No worries, luv," says Tracer. "If it's enough to get the job done, that's all we need."

"Yeah, you're right. Soon enough we'll have a team back out there, and we'll put this place to the test then. What do think, Tracer? Ready to get back out there on the next mission?"

"You betcha," she says. "You better come along yourself this time, though. I'm gettin' used to havin' you around out there."

You smile. "Yeah, I probably will."

"Don't get too excited," warns Winston. "We've had good performance so far -- near-optimal in some ways, I might even say -- but Talon is dangerous. We can't afford to let down our guard."

"It's all right, big guy," you say. "We know this stuff is serious. We're still going to have a little fun out there. What about you and your fun? Now that the satellite's launched, you'll need another science project, right? What's next?"

"I'm not sure yet," he says, still typing away. "Right now I'm helping Ms. Zhou with her Endothermic Blaster project. When that's finished, I have a number of new theories on possible alternative structures for miniaturized field effectors, like the ones in my barrier projector."

"Any practical uses?"

"We'll see," he says. "Science is about knowledge, first. The applications come later." He shuts down the program and sighs. "All right, that's enough for now. Who's up for lunch? I feel a powerful craving for some peanut butter."

You and Tracer tease Winston about his eating habits as the three of you head to the mess hall.

I think should tell Winston about Mei's plan to get Eco-point Antarctica into working condition and maybe get a plan of action started. Maybe both of them could make a list of what we need and what needs to be done for the place
>>
>>1314229
From Mei's description it seems like it would mostly be a job of excavating the place out from the snow and fixing some minor structural / interior damage.

If that is the case then really we can do it fairly soon by getting the excavator drones we need to expand our current base and then transporting them there for a few weeks or so.

If all else fails, we could get a shovel...
>>
>>1313163
With a large enough training facility, and a mission control 2, we could run "war games" to help train others as Mission Control personnel.

Heck, with dummy weapons and drones, we could run a 'practice operation' for newer recruits/commanders.

Such events would be when we have much better funding though. Training drones/Ammunition/etc... still cost money. As does fuel.

The rest of the afternoon goes by quickly as you keep working on the new command room. Winston calls in the Engineering Team (that's still just Torbjorn and Brigitte for now) to help him rig some wall mounts for large monitors, and to discuss how the control consoles should be laid out.

Thanks to your convincing, Tracer agrees to actually help, allthough somewhat grudgingly. She blinks back and forth across the base, gathering the tools and equipment you need. It seems like Tracer can still use her time manipulation abilities while carrying an armload of things. You wonder what might happen if she tried to blink while carrying another person. (For a moment you imagine Tracer carrying you bridal-style in preparation for a blink experiment, you blushing furiously under your mask.)

At the end of the day, you brush your hands off and look around at your new command center. It's ... not as impressive as you hoped it might be. It'll do the job, but it's not as grand as the vision in your head.

"Disappointed, lad?" says Torbjorn, chuckling. "Ain't quite like the giant room we had in the cartoon, is it? No giant hologram of Earth, either. Never fear. So far this's all temporary. Just doing what we can with what we got. Later on, when we can afford it, we'll get some better equipment for this place."

"Yeah, sounds good," you say. "If by then we have a proper excavator, maybe we can hollow out a command room and turn this place back into more of a "situation room" like it was intended. Or maybe we'll just keep it like this. Right now I don't like the thought of moving all these big monitors again."

"Whatever works, lad. All right, that should do it. Pack it up, Brigitte. Let's go shut down the forge for the night."

Winston is off at the comm station finishing something to do with the satellite linkup, so that leaves just you and Tracer in the command room. She sits on the railing of the stairs, overlooking the new setup in the open area below. She kicks her legs in the air under the railing as she hums something to herself.

"Lots to do around here," you say, heading up the stairs to stand by her.

"Sure is," she says. "Hopefully we get a chance for some more flyin' lessons before things get busier than they already are. A few more sessions and I think you could be takin' off in the Aurora, no sweat."

"At least one of us has confidence in my flying skills," you say ruefully. You think back to your first lesson, Tracer going over the basics of how the Aurora's flight works with her infectious enthusiasm. Being in the cockpit of that little craft seems to make her happy. "You really enjoy flying, huh?"

"Hehe, yep." She grins at you. "If there's one thing you shoulda realized about me, it's that I like to go fast."

"I have definitely realized that." You lean onto the railing next to her. "Do you ever miss it? The air force, I mean. Flying with the RAF."

She shrugs. "I mean, I've had a pretty good run here with Overwatch. But I guess, yeah, I kinda do. It was quite an experience to fly some of those bad boys. And I was still practically a kid. I was one of the youngest fighter pilots ever for the RAF, y'know. Can't believe they trusted me with engines that big! The Aurora's great and all, but in terms of pure power, she don't compare to what the military had access to back then.

"Of course, even that wasn't enough for me, flying an ordinary fighter jet. I needed more. So I became a test pilot." She sighs. "A few months and one experimental engine failure later, I was un-stuck from the fabric of reality itself. You'd think I might've learned a lesson from that, huh? Something about prudence."

"A little caution wouldn't hurt," you admit. "It's possible to be bold without being reckless. Like how Winston isn't a coward just because he's careful. Just, you know. The opposite." You grin. "Still, that's what we like about you. Without that devil-may-care attitude, you wouldn't be the Tracer we all know and love."

"Thanks, mate. I'll do what I can to balance it out and still be good old me. Hopefully I have you around to keep me in check." She smiles as she looks away. "I think that's part of why we're a good team, y'know? We balance out."

"Yeah. Me too."

The two of you stand there for a few moments in that awkward feeling of vulnerability that comes after admitting something like that. You clear you throat and change the subject.

"So ... about the accident. The official bio skims over all that. It mentions that you were testing an aircraft with an experimental engine, the Slipstream, and something went wrong. Then it skips to the part where Winston builds the chronal accelerator, and you join Overwatch. If you're okay with telling me ... what happened to you out there?"

Tracer says, "It's okay. I felt pretty messed up about it for a while, but I've come to terms with it. And it's probably about time you hear this story.

"So, you know I was a test pilot for the RAF. I was assigned to test a prototype next-generation fighter, partly designed by the scientists of that global task force I'd always heard about, Overwatch. The Slipstream's experimental chrono-matrix was supposed to be a working teleporter, and they wanted a hotshot pilot to test it out. Enter Lena Oxton!

"Flying something like that was what I'd dreamed about my whole life. I still remember taking her up, thinking about how maybe one day I'd be in the history books, pilot of the first-ever teleporting craft.

"Instead, I disappeared."

"In mid-flight, I vanished. Later they'd tell me there was no warning on their instruments, nothing to indicate a malfuction in the chrono-matrix, just ... poof. No more Lena.

"For months, almost everyone assumed I was dead. I mean, why wouldn't they? Wasn't any evidence to the contrary. The only ones who kept searching were a handful of Overwatch scientists, even though they had no idea where -- or when -- I'd gone.

"In one of the Overwatch science outposts they built something they called a "chronal compression stabilization unit" though it was usually just called the time chamber. No idea how it worked, but whatever it did, it brought me back. But it was only part of the way. I kept flickering in and out of existence. Even when I was there, I couldn't touch anything. I was barely more than a ghost."

"What was it like?" you ask.

"It's ..." Tracer shakes her head. "It's still confusing. I can barely remember. You know how when you're dreaming, you end up someplace and don't have any idea how you got there? It was a little like that, but for time. I was in the same place, over and over again -- the time chamber -- but with no idea of how long had passed. The scientists told me I disappeared for hours or days at a time, that I had something they called "chronal disassociation." None of 'em had any idea what to do with me. They told me I'd never be cured, that I'd be stuck like that for the rest of my life. Assuming I aged. If not, it might've been literally forever, hah hah ..." Tracer tries to laugh off the idea of that dark fate.

"What happened?" you ask. "How did you get out?"

"Winston," she says. "He never gave up on me. Somehow he figured out some of the science behind what'd happened to me, and built the chronal accelerator." Tracer taps the glowing device on her chest. "Keeps me anchored to the present. When I want it to, that is. As you may have noticed, I'm learning to play around with my own personal time a little."

"Sure comes in handy when you want to erase your mistakes," you admit, wondering if there's another metaphor there. "Are there any ... long-term effects?"

Tracer shrugs. "Don't know. Mercy gives me a clean bill of health, but some of her scanners don't work on me right any more. Winston isn't sure, and he's the only person on Earth who halfway understands what happened to me. Until he tells me otherwise, I'm going to assume the best, and that I got superpowers with no drawbacks! Just cost me a few months of existential terror." She giggles. "Strange how something horrible could turn into something great, huh?"

Why would it. Tracer is an excitable energetic character. A pose with more implication of energy is better. Over the Shoulder was just bland, other than the butt. The over the shoulder fits better as a Widow-maker pose, as you can tell by looking at her over the shoulder pose.
>>
>>1316794
Hey Raven I may be threads late in asking this but since i just caught up recently i want to know During the Genji mission If we had went after widowmaker and rolled well, would Genji have been captured while we captured widowmaker ourselves? And would that have led to them creating an unholy abomination of a cyborg killing machine? And could we have undone widowmakers brainwashing so that we essentially 'traded' members with talon?

But really imagine the terror of a tech-ed out 'roided up Genji absolutely hell bent on satisfying his bloodlust.
>>
>>1316818

Nigger there's nothing about tracer that suggests she has health complications that mean she can't turn her neck.

not unable, just doesn't fit their character. You can't see Soldier 76 do the pinup pose because it goes against his character. He could do it, He just wouldn't.
Tracer can turn her head 100 degrees, it just doesn't fit her energetic personality to do so.
>>
>>1316728

"Yikes. Quite a story." You exhale heavily. "That's rough, buddy. I can't imagine going through all that."

"Yeah ... it ain't a great feeling to know you could just phase out of existence at any moment. Like I said, I was messed up about it for a while. Even afterwards, it took me a few months to adjust. Kept accidentally speeding up and slowing down." She looks down at the chronal accelerator on her chest. "Definitely had a bit of a love-hate relationship with this girl for a while. Winston's improved it over the years, though. I can take it off for short periods now, as long as I stay within ten meters or so."

"I'm just glad it had a happy ending," you say. "You survived, came back to regular spacetime, and like you said, now you have superpowers. And with no drawbacks, other than having to wear that thing." Privately, you wonder if that's really true. Tracer doesn't look like she's aged much since she was an 18-year-old fighter pilot. Granted, she's only 26 now, going by regular chronology, so she might not look that different anyway. Still. Could it be possible that she doesn't age? Only time will tell, you suppose.

"It's thanks to Winston," she says. "He never kept searching for a way to bring me back."

"Yeah. He is a pretty great guy. Ape. Whatever." You think of Winston toiling in his laboratory at the science outpost, building one jury-rigged, experimental, highly dangerous time-altering device after another, all to save one woman who he barely knew at the time. "The gorilla scientist the world needs, but not the one it deserves."

"I think my ears are burning," says Winston, knuckle-walking down the stairs. "Unless this is some other gorilla scientist you're discussing?"

"Winston!" Tracer blinks over to him and gives him a big hug. "Just telling Seeker about the old days, when you built the accelerator."

"Oh, that." Winston looks away, embarassed. "I just did what anyone would if they had the scientific background."

"I don't think so, big guy," you say, clapping him on the shoulder. "You went above and beyond, but that's why you're great." You look around at the command room. "I think we're done here for the night. We've got the evening to ourselves without any cities burning down. Let's go find something to do to relax, shall we?"

So really random question, But based on the lore in Overwatch. If Tracer had a kid, like a flesh and blood thing would it develop to full development and if so, Would the kid have his moms Time disease or be more in control of it?
>>

She still looks back in the new pose. Do you even have an argument here?

You keep saying "MUH CHARACTER MUH CHARACTER" but you haven't said why looking backwards is so against Tracer's character in the first place.

Sure the pose was bland, I actually agree it was kind of boring - but there's nothing about her CHARACTER that means she would never make that pose. Your argument is shit.

>>
>>1316875
>>1316883

Some stuff that was already known--Tracer's test pilot status in the military for example, Widowmaker's supposed proficiency as a ballet dancer was confirmed, and in a rather odd bug Soldier 76's Evel Knievel skin had the lore from his Strike Commander skin posted to it.

Also Orisa is getting more voice lines and emotes, so there's that. She's quirky and innocent and naive--but what the hell do you expect from a robot that's only a month old? She's like Chappie with two more legs and a gatling cannon.

The bigger bits can be found in balance and gameplay--Lucio has the most notable changes, with his healing/speed boost radii now visible to the player, the healing boost finally getting buffed, and the radius of his AoE heals/speed boost getting nerfed. Also his wallriding got a pretty big buff, too.

You, Tracer and Winston head to the lounge, talking about options for something to do. There you find McCree, leaning back in a seat with his boots up on the table, idly shuffling a deck of cards as he watches sports on the vidscreen. "Howdy, fellas," he says, looking over his shoulder as you enter the bar. "I was just going through my old things and found my lucky deck of cards. If y'all aren't doin' nothin', what do ya say to a few rounds of poker?"

"That sounds good, actually," you say. "We were just looking for something to do for the evening after spending the whole day setting up the new command center."

"Just what were you doin' instead of helping us, anyway?" Tracer asks suspiciously.

"Target practice," says McCree. "We ain't got a sniper, so the marksmanship is pretty much up to me and Hanzo fer now, and he ain't officially on the team yet, right? So I can't let myself get sloppy."

"Fair enough," you say. "What do you say, guys? Play some cards?"

"I'm always down to beat Jesse at something," Tracer says.

"I mean, ya say that, darlin', but I can't remember the last time you beat me at anythin'," McCree says with a sly smile. "Other than a foot race, and that ain't hardly fair."

"Oh ho. You're on, mate." Tracer blinks into the chair opposite McCree. "Let's have a go at it."

"Winston?" you ask.

The gorilla adjusts his glasses. "I'm familiar with the game, although I've never played. It seems a simple matter of probabilities."

"That's a part of it, true," you say. "But there's more to it than that. Come on, let's play. You might learn something."

"If you say so," he rumbles, sitting down between Tracer and McCree.

McCree says, "That's four of us. Just need ourselves a pigeon to pluck ... hmm. Well, ain't that convenient." You follow his gaze to see Mei poking her head into the lounge.

"Er, hello!" she says. "I was just looking for Mr. Winston to ask--"

"--ta play cards with us!" McCree crosses the room to Mei, throws an arm good-naturedly around her shoulders, and guides her to the table. "It's a real bondin' experience for new recruits like yourself."

"I was in Overwatch for eleven years, but um, okay." Mei waves awkwardly to everyone as she sits down on Tracer's other side. "Hi. How do we play?"

"We'll try some Texas Hold 'Em for starters," says McCree, shuffling the deck. "Everyone gets two face-down cards, then five community cards in the middle."

"You're trying to make the best combination of five cards possible," you explain as you sit down between Mei and McCree. You pull up an explanation of the rules on your datapad and show it to her. "These are the winning hands in the order they beat each other, you see? High card, pair, two pairs, three of a kind, and so on."

"What should we bet?" asks Tracer.

"Well, I ain't got any money," says McCree. "So it'll have to be something else."

"I think matchsticks are the default thing to use when you're not actually bettin'," says Tracer.

"Why not chores around the base?" Winston suggests. "There's plenty to do that the utility drones can't handle."

"Or snacks," Mei adds. "Everyone loves snacks, right?"

"Why not all three?" you say. "Casinos use chips in different amounts, rights? We can use matchsticks as one, snacks as ten matchsticks, and chores as ten snacks."

Everyone agrees. You fetch a box of matches from behind the bar (these went back into vogue when the fossil fuels started to run out a few decades ago) and a big bag of small, individually wrapped sponge cakes. Tracer grabs a bottle of rum and some glasses, and pours one for everyone. McCree deals out the first round of cards, two apiece. "Ladies, gentlemen an' gorilla, let the best player win."

You settle in to the rhythm of the game. It's been a while since you've played, but you have a lot more experience lying and double-dealing than Winston, Tracer, and especially Mei. You've got an instinct for the right moment, and a pretty good poker face. (Too bad you're not wearing your mask, you think.) Pretty quickly you get a feeling for your opponents' strategies.

Mei soon understands that the game is about probabilities, and the math is easy enough for a scientist like her to do in her head. Actually playing the game of poker, however, is another matter. Girl has a terrible poker face, you think, and some pretty obvious tells. She tends to glare at cards she doesn't like, and when luck turns her way, she hunches her shoulders and grips her cards tightly, like she's trying to hold in her excitement.

Winston can calculate the math behind the game as well, and is doing better at preventing any tells. Or maybe it's just that gorilla body language is harder to read. Either way, he's doing better than the two girls.

Tracer makes bold moves and reckless attacks, sometimes bluffing based on pure instinct. She seems to think that audacity is the best strategy, and hates to fold. Sometimes she gets away with it, but more often than not her impulsive decisions get pulled out from under her like a rug.

McCree, as you expected, is another matter entirely from the others. He seems to be taking it easy on the neophytes at first, sometimes making mistakes that are fairly obvious to you and saying something like, "Shucks, how did I let that one get away from me?" But underneath his affable demeanor you sense a killer instinct. If you aren't careful, you'll get bluffed to hell and back by this guy.

"Raise," you say, steady as a rock, as you push in double the amount of matchsticks.

Tracer tosses in her cards, disgusted. "I ain't going down this dusty road again."

Mei calls your bet, and you deal the "flop" -- the first three cards that you'll share. Six of hearts, nine of diamonds, ace of clubs. Absolutely, completely worthless to you. If possible, your hand of nothing is actually worse than before.
Mei's shoulders hunch over. She's probably got an even better hand thanks for one of these cards. Probably two pairs, ace high. You can only beat that if the next two cards are either both threes or both fives, which is something like a 0.05% chance.

"Ten," says Mei fiercely, picking up a sponge cake and putting it in the "pot" in the center of the table with the matchsticks.

You look her right in the eyes as you put in two sponge cakes. "Your ten, plus ten more."

Mei starts to sweat, looking back and forth from her cards to the betting pot.

You deal the fourth card. Jack of diamonds. Total crap. You keep your eyes level with Mei's, nothing giving away a thing.

"T-twenty," she says, pushing in two cakes.

Stone cold, you put in four. "Your twenty, plus twenty more."

Mei stares intensely at her cards, until finally she groans and drops them on the table. "I fold."

You can't help cackling as you rake in your winnings.

"I'm afraid ya just got bluffed, sweetheart," says McCree, grinning.

"What?!" gasps Mei.

Smiling, you turn over your cards, showing the useless three and five.

"But that makes no sense!" Winston objects, unable to contain himself. "How can you bet like that with nothing? You have no chances of winning. The probabilities are all wrong!"

"He was bettin' she'd fold," McCree says, taking out two cigars and handing one to you. "And he was right. Cigar, young fella?"

"Don't mind if I do," you say, accepting it. "I've got enough matchsticks to light it, after all."

"Ya always did think too much about this stuff, Winston," says McCree, shuffling the cards. "Gotta go with your gut feelin' sometimes."

"I've been tellin' him that for years," says Tracer. "Can't math your way through every situation, big guy. Use your instincts!"

"I still think it makes more sense to take the option that has the higher chance of success," insists Winston. "You might get lucky doing whatever "feels right" but inevitably the statistics will assert themselves." He looks at his cards and puts some matchsticks into the center. "Ms. Zhou, back me up on this, will you?"

Tracer frowns at her cards and puts them down. "Blech."

Mei says, "In the past, scientists often made assumptions based on what felt right -- they compared one thing to another, and thought, hey, these things look like each other. It makes sense to treat them similar, right? They were found to be disastrously wrong sometimes." She looks at her cards and sighs. "Fold."

You look at your cards. Suited Jack and nine. Pretty solid.

"What do you think, Seeker?" asks Tracer.

"Well, for the game ..."

"For the game, I call," you say, tossing in the same amount of matchsticks. "For the rest, it's tough to say. I think there's a time and a place for both. The hard logic of the universe is tough to argue with, it's true. Statistics don't lie. But your instincts are pretty smart. They know things you don't. Sometimes you just have to trust them. If I had to choose, I'd go with you and McCree, at least in poker. Game isn't about hard logic, anyway."

"Call," says McCree, and deals the flop. A seven, a queen, and a nine, which gives you a pair of nines with jack high. Good stuff. Worth a little investment.

"Ten," says Winston, putting in a snack cake.

"Raise to twenty," you say, putting in two.

McCree tosses in his cards. "Too rich for my blood."

"Call," says Winston. You eye him suspiciously, but the gorilla doesn't have any tells. Hard to figure out what he's thinking.

McCree deals the fourth card, the "turn". It's a jack. Two pairs! Nice!

"Twenty," says Winston.

Damn. Things are getting serious. "Call," you say, suddenly nervous.

With the fifth card, the "river" comes a final round of betting, until it's time for the showdown. You turn over your cards. "Two pair, jack and nines," you say.

Winston turns his cards over to show a queen and a seven. "Two pair as well, and if I'm not mistaken, I'm afraid my queens beat your jacks."

"Argh! Curse you!" You shake a fist at Winston.

The gorilla chuckles as he takes his winnings. "Statistics win this time, Seeker."

Good thing you were just calling instead of getting serious.

The game goes on.

"How are you adjustin' to life in 2081, Mei?" asks Tracer. "I know things must be pretty different."

"Some things were quite shocking," Mei admits. "I still haven't got used to some of the new tech standards. But over time, I'm finding -- what's that saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same. AI rampancy, pollution, inequality. We're still at war, both with ourselves, our creations, and the Earth. But there is still also hope. Peace, love, and compassion. This is a world worth fighting for, and many of us are willing to fight for it."

"I hear ya, sister," says McCree. "Sometimes the world is a messed-up place, but it's still our home."

"I'm glad you agree, Mr. McCree," says Mei. "How are things in western America these days? When I went into the pod, things were, eh ... not good, I would say. Have they improved at all?"

"A little, for sure," he says. "Radiation's mostly been cleaned up. The new Hollywood is doin' well, and that brings in money, so everyone's happy. A man's actually got a chance of ridin' from one end of Route 66 to the other without gettin' killed for his horse and boots. That said, there's still plenty of bad stuff out there. New West is a mighty weird place. Lot of stuff out there'll getcha killed before ya can even figure out what the hell it is yer lookin' at."

In the end, as you feared, the final showdown comes between you and McCree.

"All in," says McCree, pushing the last of his matches into the pot. A huge pile of matchsticks and snack cakes sits in the center of the table. The only way to match his bet is to all-in yourself, and stake everything.

You've got three kings, which is a damn good hand. But three of the five cards on the table are hearts. If both of McCree's cards are hearts -- about a 1/16 chance -- he'll beat you, and take it all.

On the other hand, he could be bluffing. You'd be humiliated if he won the whole thing by bluffing you with a crap hand, like you did to Mei earlier. He's dropped big bluffs earlier in the game, without any hint of emotion. He looks at you now with that same stone cold stare, daring you to make a move.

You're sweating a little. This must be something like what McCree's opponents in a duel go through, right before he draws his revolver and blasts them to kingdom come. What is it he says? It's high noon somewhere in the world. You imagine a tumbleweed blowing through the lounge.

"Let's do this, pardner," says McCree. "What's it gonna be?"

"There's no way you have that flush," you say to McCree.

"Don't I?" he says.

You narrow your eyes, looking for some kind of sign. McCree sits there, totally unreadable. You feel a trickle of sweat drip down your back.

"Fine. No risk, no reward. All-in," you say bravely, shoving the rest of your sticks into the pile. "Draw, pilgrim!" You dramatically turn over your cards. "Three kings!"

McCree lets out a whistle. "That there is a good hand. But I'm afraid--" He casually flips over his cards, revealing two hearts. "It don't beat a flush."

"Nooooooo!" You clutch your head in the agony of defeat. "Bamboozled!"

"Shoulda played your instincts, Seeker," McCree says, grinning as he rakes in the matchsticks. "Ya knew I was gonna beat ya, but ya played the maths instead, and lost. Better luck next time, kid."

You point a finger at McCree in your best saturday morning cartoon villain pose. "I'll get my revenge, Jesse McCree!"

That just sets the others off further. You and McCree have a good laugh as well. For a moment, none of this crazy global vigilante stuff matters. Talon, Anubis, none of that is important. Just you and some friends having a good laugh at the bar over a game of cards.

"Good game, fellas," you say eventually, wiping away a tear of laughter. "This was fun. We should do this again sometime."

"Agreed," says Tracer, stretching her arms and yawning. "Right now, though, I gotta hit the hay. G'night folks!"

"Same here," says Mei, rising. "Thanks, everyone! I had fun!"

You end up yawning yourself as you head back the bunks. Before you go there, though, you take a detour up into the stairs up to the Aurora gangplank. Sitting on the stairs, you pull out your datapad and activate your link to Athena.

"What can I do for you, Seeker?" she asks.

"We need a mission, Athena. The doom clock is ticking, and besides, I think the troops are already getting restless. There's only so many days we can spend sitting around the base playing cards. Got anything for me?"

Athena brings up the world map and highlights the southeastern tip of Asia, then zooms in to a view of Singapore's digital grid. "I have detected a cybersecurity flaw in Hyde Global's Singapore location. An unsecured executive terminal."

"Right, one of those. I used to deal with those a lot. Executives demand a lot of privileges on their terminals, and every once in a while, you'll get one who doesn't take his computer security as seriously as he should. Those things are a gold mine for intel on what the corps are up to."

"Exactly." Athena places a picture of the corporate skyscraper next to the map. "I have determined a covert infiltration mission to hack this terminal will provide us valuable intelligence -- and perhaps financial data as well."

"Intel and money? Sounds good to me. If it's a covert mission, though ... maybe we should wait until Genji is fully recovered. He'll still be in rough shape for a few days, according to Mercy, and I'm not sure about doing a stealth run into a corporate tower without him."

I suppose Genji's utility for this outweighs a few days of waiting though. That terminal is unlikely to go away until it's taken advantage of.
>>
I mean seriously though genji for stealth seems like a lock, ninjas are stealthy not killy primarily right
>>
>>1317111

>Sleep now, plan tomorrow.
We can create a plan in the morning
>>
>>1317111

"I'm going to wait for Genji to recover, I think," you say. "Having him along on a stealth mission seems like it's worth waiting for. Either way, I'm going to start planning the mission in the morning. Figure things out ahead of time.

"Right now, though? I'm going to bed. Good night, Athena."

"Good night, Seeker. Pleasant dreams."

You settle into your bunk, which is starting to be a comfortable, familiar place to sleep. Tomorrow you'll plan the mission to Singapore and the executive terminal. Right now, though, you're looking forward to a good night's rest. You drift off to sleep, thinking of avenging yourself in poker.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

An urgent sound from your datapad awakens you in the middle of the night. Groggy, it takes you a few tries, slapping the nightstand with your hand before you finally grab the pad and look at it with half-opened eyes.

URGENT

Rising from bed, you say to Athena, "We have to destroy that Anubis fragment, stop this from happening -- but more importantly, we need to protect those people. Let's wake up the team and get out there!"

You start to head out of the crew quarters, then stop. Pants first. Start with pants.

"What are we dealing with, Athena?" you ask, pulling on your clothes.

"A military patrol has diverted into the outskirts of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Africa." She shows you the location of the city in western Africa, zooms in to show the hacked Omnic patrol. "They appear to be moving through the city, attacking civilians and destroying property. Purpose unknown. Destination unknown. Analysis still ongoing."

"So they're just causing mayhem and destruction for no reason? Great. Thanks, Anubis."

You shake Tracer awake. "Hey, Lena. Better wake up."

She sits halfway up. "Whuzzafuah?"

"We've got Overwatch action. Hop to it, soldier."

"Yessir!" Tracer springs to life and out of the bed, saluting, then giggles. "What's the situation, mate?"

"World needs heroes," you say. "Guess that's us."

"You bet it is," says Tracer.

Winston's a must, and so is Mercy.

We're coming along too and so is Tracer.

Mei might be quite valuable on this mission if she's gotten the go-ahead for field operations. And Bastion would be a solid pick to round out this roster.

Winston's great for close combat and hit-and-run strikes, combined with Bastion's ability to lay down crossfire in tight streets and Mei's ability to bottleneck foes will make this team lethal in urban combat. It's not too fluid and not too static.

Maybe some Overwatch Blue.

I bet Mei would get adorably flustered if Seeker flirted with her - so no matter who you decide to "back", getting that done is a priority.

If you're undecided, can I interest you in best route? Harem route, best route.

>>1319084
No, thats greedy, wanna know who else is greedy? mega-corporations!!!

>>1319084
I mean sure its the best route to get cucked by your own indecisiveness

>unable to decide who to back for the seekerb owl
>just posted who they should be backing for the seekerb owl

Either of the pair are fine.

Or if you're adventurous, both

If you want it to end up like Witcher 3 harem route, then fine. But These are bridges Im not eager to burn just yet.

Thank you

I made a poll to see who plays Overwatch the game, and who just plays Overwatch Quest. I don't think it will impact anything, it's just out of curiosity.

"Y-you want me to go on a field mission, Seeker?!"

The team for the next mission is:

>Hanzo
>Mei
>Mercy
>Seeker
>Tracer
>Winston

Not a difficult vote, considering 4 of the agents are on the injured list right now.

We had a few votes to bring Bastion along and leave Mei (or Hanzo?) behind, but I think you're probably right about bringing your tame Omnic to the crisis point and hoping people understand he's friendly.

Let's hope Mei doesn't get too hot in Africa.

Mission is scheduled for Monday evening, PST.

Anon, those are two contradictory statements, and only one of them is a canon statement from Seeker himself.

That would be a hell of a reunion

> Mom walks in, sees some bandit in a suit
> Your mother pulls a pistol on you while calling security to cap your ass

Good times in Seekerlaaaand~
