You exit the momentum train and bask in the morning sunlight, finally in Neo-Domino City. You arrive to the metropolis a fresh graduate of your local Duel Academia, now a certified duelist hungering for fame and glory. Still, even after the exams you're barely a rookie in the dueling world.

In memory of the great Duel City tournament, Neo-Domino is once again slowly turning into the capital for dueling for the next couple months, thanks to a series of tournaments organized by Kaibacorp itself, culminating in world-class events such as World Duel Grand Prix and the Duel City anniversary tournament, where people from all around the world strive for the title of King of Games.

That insanity is however still months away. Right now, Kaiba Corp instead runs open, large-scale tournaments for begginers, casuals and people who've never had the chance to try dueling seriously. An idea of one of the Kaiba brothers himself, the point of these tournaments is to give such people an opportunity to test their worth and show what really they're capable of, disregarding their origins and backgrounds, with the top scorers getting temporary Kaibacorp sponsorship and entry into the qualifiers for the later, bigger tournaments.

Yourself, you come from a small town in the middle of nowhere and have finished a provincial Dueling School, which would usually put you at a disadvantage towards any of the big city duelists. As such, this tournaments is exactly for people like you, as along with the entry fee you get one of various starter decks; moreover as the tournament progresses you will be able to obtain additional cards to supplement your collection - a vast improvement over the pile of normal monsters you managed to get together at home. Since long before graduation you've been planning and saving money for entry, but finally, you've arrived.

After waiting in the quene for half an hour - arriving early pays off - it's finally your turn, and you can finally enter the begginers tournament.

But first, you have to register.

What is your name, duelist?

You quickly write down your name- Gerard Xavier, for some reason needing the urge to add that your nickname is Redhat and that your mother's maiden name is Lee.

Nevertheless, you fill up the form and give it to the nice, if somewhat chubby lady at the counter, and proceed to the presentation explaining the rules.

To ease the proceedings, the tournaments in organized in the so-called speed duel format .
Each players uses a 20- card deck, given by the organizers, and starts with 4000 life points and 4 cards in hand. The field contains 3 monster slots and 3 S/T slots per player, as well as one Field Spell slot. The Extra deck is limited to 5 cards per player.

After the briefing, you wait for your choice to choose the starter deck. Finally, it's your turn, and the machine chooses 2 out of the possible starters for you to choose from.

Your choices are:
King of Beasts
Cogwork

Please choose wisely, these starter decks may be the only chance to obtain some of the key cards within. The first one to recieve 3 votes is taken.

The obvious (but far less fun) choice, I see.
Here, have a decklist, along with your Duel Disk:
3x Red Gadget
3x Yellow Gadget
3x Green Gadget
3x Cyber Dragon Zwei
1x Boot-up Soldier- Dread Dynamo
1x Ancient Gear Gadjitron Chimera
1x Ancient Gear Gadjitron Dragon
1x Pot of Duality
1x Sakuretsu Armor
1x Dust Tornado
2x Negate attack

You'll also be able to purchase packs from KAIBA CORP (tm) supported shops all around the city for DP (duel points) you accumlate by beating other duelists.

After the process is over, you move to your assigned hotel room and unpack.

At around 2 pm, you move to the main City Square for inauguration.

After 15 minutes, all eyes in the square turn to the sound of a Helicopter approaching. There, you see Seto Kaiba himself, who instantly appears on the main screen at the square and starts the tournament. No big speech, as he himself says he does this every year, however he stresses the point that he hopes at least a handful of the gathered are skillful enought for him to someday have a chance to crush personally.

After the chopper leaves, you're not really sure where to start, but you don't have to. You're instantly approached by a very familiar person.

Its [...], your old neighbour. You new each other since you were kids, and always rivaled each other- right now, your record with each other is 34/36, and it seems he wants to increase his lead.
Quite a strange first opponent, but who are you to complain. But first, you have to choose who goes first.

Yo, I'm really excited for this quest, thanks for running it!
>>
>>1305508
Machines all the way man, thanks for this.
>>
So, I spy several different paths we can build this machine deck with. Gadget/Gadjilt is the first and most obvious, but we've also gotten a good few cards of the purely "ancient gear" variety, that for now should fit in without crowding too much out. We've also begun assembling pieces for "cyber dragon", "vwxyz", and "gradius".

The basic spell packs weren't quite what I was hoping for, but I suppose that was me not realizing what the difficulty of building a deck without third party retailers is like. Mooyan curry and Hinotama don't really impress when you're used to poison of the old man, I guess.

Also, should we enter another tournament tomorrow? I feel like the starter decks are really good value, and if we could nab another copy of gadjiltron dragon that way, that'd be great. Even if we can't though, another deck would mean being able to make major metagame calls.
>>
So I think the only change we should make right now is switch out one cyber dragon zwei for the rush recklessly spell.

And that's it.

Anyone else have ideas?
>>
>>1307367
Not really. I'd like to enter another tournament. If we can get that "king of beasts" deck, we could stand to use the "giant rat"s in there.

Mostly I'm just a little disappointed we didn't pull "stronghold, the moving fortress". Guess we'll have to win lots and earn more double penetration!

Also, I'm wondering a bit about what sort of, I guess, "tone" we're going to be pursuing here? Are we going to be mostly just dueling or are we going to be diving into the life and personality of Redhat? I'm down for whatever.
>>
>>1307510
I'll have you know that we're in a tournament currently, as the begginer event is a week long league.

Moreover, we cannot enter intro tier tournaments twice, and as I said we won't get another chance for Intro Decks- but don't worry, most of their cards can be found in boosters, you just have to know where.

As for the tone, we'll see. I've some ideas, but for the beggining duels seem like the thing to do; plot may catch up to us later.
>>
Also Stronghold is bad with three monster zones. Wait for the next tournament level to think about that.
>>
>>1307572
>>1307541
Ah, that clears things up. Looking back in reading comprehension mode reveals that what I had thought was our win/loss ratio for the tournament was our win/loss ratio with Henry. We'll pass him up soon, hopefully.

I can see that if we're going to be sticking with the speed duel format, stronghold would be pretty bad. Machine king prototype ain't great either.

And I'm just now realizing that if we're going to progress in this tournament, we'll have to pick fights ourself, rather than relying on matchmaking.

Since I seem to be lagging behind a bit in understanding the setting, I suppose I should ask: what are the expected ways of getting cards? Can we start betting some of ours against cards of our opponents? Can we win cards for doing well in the tournament? If intro decks are off the table now, what about structure decks?

And a question for the other players, do you guys want to buy more workshop packs? Or try out basic traps? Something else? Personally, I'd like to try pulling a "Waboku".
>>
On your first night you sleep about robotic sheep. No hidden messages, no obvious foreshadowing, nothing. You're quite underwhelmed.
.....................................................................
>>1307649
I'm actually interested what do ya'll think about Speed Duel format. I intend to remove it's limitations little by little between different stages, but if we can stick to it if it's liked.

As for cards, so far it's packs. Ante Rule might pop up later, it's Duel City Anniversary after all, but let's have a couple valuable things to vager for first.

The problem with structure decks is that buying 3 copies of one usually just means you have a reay, consistent deck that you can only improve on in the future. I might add them when we get to the big leagues but at this point it would be far too easy to grind out 3 copies of one and stomp everyone.

All that talk about the future makes me nervous.

I like speed duel because I think it works well in the context of a quest format. Especially since I'm known among my friends for control decks, the brisk pacing is really refreshing.

The reason I ask about control decks is because I'm worried about being married to machines right off the bat. There's a reason we didn't go for deep forest packs after all- improving an existing deck is better on the margin than trying to build a new deck with a new theme.

Maybe that'll change once we get to the point where we can just blow 1500 dp on packs at once to start a new deck theme.

Miscalculations, mostly. I didn't see that the Chimera could end the battle instantly.

Your play was he more conservative one, which normally I favor, but I don't expect this guy to be holding any hand traps or anything like kuriboh.

Maybe if you were not a silent protagonist you'd be able to get her attention, but what can you do. You finally decide to give up and go somwhere else.

>>1308648
During the first duel two people at the same time wanted to summon in face up defence. This is illegal by TCG rules, HOWEVER it's a standard move in every single anime. As such, I've decided to use it.

END OF EPISODE 2

G'night everyone, it's 1 am here.

>>1308750
I knew that much, but the fact that someone actually supported that choice means I have to accept it, due to rules I used thus far. Sorry, but misplays happen also in real life.

Might have to switch to requiring 3 people to agree on something, but I'm afraid that it still might be too much.
>>
>>1308763
Ahh no worries. Think we still have one green gadget in attack mode don't we? if so then we can work it out.

Cheers for running OP.
>>
>>1308773
Do we now?
>>
>>1308763
Thanks for running.
>>
Just saw the thread, would be kind of cool if we made a bootleg chain beat deck using the gadgets as our floaters
>>
So, we have a green gadget and a red gadget in face up defense position, and a set negate attack. We can use negate attack to hold off death this turn. We have, like, a 10% chance of drawing gadjiltron dragon next turn and swinging things back in our favor. Otherwise... it'll be tough.
>>
>>1309026
We don't need to use negate attack. Black Tyranno is a bad card and cant attack us directly because we control a set s/t card
>>
>summoning red gadget in attack mode when it has 1500 defense

>summoning green gadget in defense mode has 600 defense

Seriously guys, just google the cards before you fucking vote. There's like three of you.

Also, we should offer Lily the pink hair band and the pink hair pin after the duel regardless of who wins and loses because she's a girl and we're a boy so clearly we aren't going to use it.
>>
>>1309173
all the gadgets have poor defense and attack, there main draw is that they search out another card gadget when played, now why we didn't trade green gadgets for our opponents monsters I will never know

I need to sleep, but I'll vote for no response. We'll survive for a while just by summoning a new gadget in defense position every turn to replace the one tyranno destroyed. Also, we need that set s/t to keep tyranno from chomping us. So let's try to wait this out.

That'd be really helpful. It's easy to forget cards are there when they don't attack/activate for a turn.

Maybe it's easier for other anons, but I have trouble.
>>
God seriously c'mon guys this entire duel has been a shitshow because you aren't paying attention.
>>
We need to negate this attack.

Actually we needed to have negated the last attack but whatever. Let's negate this one.
>>
>>1309862
If we negate this attack, we have to draw a winning card next turn.

If we let this happen, we will be able to use negate attack on her next turn and draw another card. It's more likely we can sakuretsu armor her tyranno if we let this gadget die. I'm pretty sure, anyway.

>From this point on 3 people agreeing are oficially what's needed. I feel sorry for having to let the last attack happen but rules are rules, and this would be boring anyway if we always make the right plays.

There is a lot of idiocy on our end, but here's shit you need to do.

1. Stop posting pictures of cards that aren't in play in an attempt to be cheeky. I get why you're doing it thematically but miscommunication is a problem when some people aren't paying attention.

2. Post a picture of the most relevant card you can to the current situation with every single update.

3. Always post all the necessary information we are aware of with every single update including the field and our hand. This isn't a difficult issue.

4.

>>1309882

>>1309883

>>
Honestly I don't even give a shit if we win at this point.

I get that character's make mistakes but this doesn't feel like natural mistakes.

This feels like someone with several distinct personalities, several of which don't know how to play yugioh or the deck in question that we're holding.

>>1309873

>>
>>1309886
To add onto this, i do like the cheeky cards for telling our daily fortune in the morning and such. And I like the jokes in the filenames.

Hopefully the list of things (our hand/the field) can be mostly copy-pasted from

i object at least drillroid is a 'decent' 4 star monster with a potentialy usefull effect.
Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beast

The rest I agree is garbadge.

Drilleoid is okay, but there are betters things that we could do, also Tanngrisnir doesn't synergize with our deck, it's a good tech hut we'd rather tribute our gears for those effects.

I don't play turbo (Duel Links) but I imagine you would some some sort of spells or traps, or is it hyper offense?
>>
>>1310595
I'm just bad at deckbuilding, so one spell and one trap for the beta version before others edited it to be better seemed reasonable.

Moreover though, it seemed like since many of those monsters have swarming effects, we need to be monster heavy to not run out of monsters. Plus, some of them, like sea koala and tree otter, have effects which are immediately applicable, and can preform the duties of spells/traps.

We need to try to pull Koalo-Koala.
>>
>>1310606
I'll second it that way we have another deck, but I don't feel confident not having a reliable way of getting our fusion boss monster. Also we don't have XYZ yet so it might be more relevant once we get access to black cards.

Items found:
3x Red Gadget (1 of them fell of somewhere and landed on your hat)

The Daedalus bridge is a famous tourist location. On sunny days you can see the Satelite from here, and even without that the view on the sea will always attract people.

You see Lily standing by the Guardrail and looking in the distance. She did not notice you yet.

What do you do?

You approach Lily. She seems a little unhappy when taken out of her trance, but when she sees its you her expression changes towards apathy.

You start the conversation and inquire whether she knows anything about the curse.
>That's strange... but I heard something similar in Duel Academy, years ago. Are you sure you did not do anything to piss off any spirits? Suposedly they're really petty and can hold grudges indifinetly. The story back in school was that a guy was expieriencing sudden and unexplained blows of wind that would interrupt his duels, and eventually caused him to fall down some stairs, breaking his leg in a couple places. He then confessed to "hotgluing" a set of Harpie Lady cards and pleaded for mercy.
>I never believed those stories, but the guy Is supposedly a frequent visitor of the Duel Shrine, and expieriences no new accidents.

You inquired futher about the Duel Shrine.
>People give all kinds of stuff to that thing, bt it rarely works. Supposedly it gives more effect the more you sacrifice to it, however hardly anyone is mad enough to leave anything valuable there. You're probably better off not giving it anything anyway, as giving too little can supposedly have grave consequences.

You thank her for the conversation and try giving her the pink accesories.
>...Pink? Really? What am I, a preschooler? I don't know where you got those items, probably a trash can, but I for sure do not intend to take them off you.

Conversation Ended, and Lily went back to Staring at the Horizon.

You approach the Shrine, feeling the pressure in the air rise visibly as you do. You offer 3 pieces of coloured cardboard to the Card Spirits, hoping that this is enough to avert their anger at least one bit.

You offer:
1x Machine King
1x Machine King Prototype
1x Gaia Knight, The Force of Earth

As you lay the cards down, you are momentarily blinded by how bright the day is. The playful chatter of the birds fills your ears, where before only existed grim sadness. You feel as if a gret bit of pressure was substracted from your shoulders, and you realise that for the first time since yesterday you don't feel as if someone's looking at you with disappointment.

Now it's at most indifference.

You make a short prayer of forgiveness, but it does not seem anyone or anything takes any interest in it.

You leave the area immidiately, passing KENYoU at the entrance, who's carrying a large bouquet of flowers to the shrine. You don't like the guy, so you opt to ingore him.

By the entrance, you notice a card positioned on the top of the fence.

It does not take long to find an opponent when you activate your duel disk, as Wisteria lmost instantly stands up to the challenge, a show of Pride and Arrogance on her face.

The duel commences.

TURN 1
GERARD 4000
WISTERIA 4000

She draws her cards and, quite strangely for this setting, ponders for a while.

She Normal Summons Flying Kamakiri # 1 and sets 2 cards face down.

TURN 2
Gerard 4000
Wisteria 4000

Your Hand:
Drillroid
Red Gadget
Sakuretsu Armor
Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Chimera

Your Draw:
Green Gadget
>>

What do you do?
>>

>>
You normal summon Red Gadget in attack mode and use its effect to move a Yellow Gadget from your deck to your hand. You set a Sakuretsu Armor and pass.

On your End Step Wisteria activates Dust Tornado, destroying Sakuretsu Armor.

TURN 3
GERARD 4000
WISTERIA 4000

She Draws and Normal Summons Flying Kamakiri # 2.

She moves to combat and attacks with both bugs, with #1 destroying Red Gadget and #2 attacking directly.

GERARD 4000 -> 3900 -> 2400

She passes.

TURN 4
GERARD 2400
WISTERIA 4000

Your hand:

Drillroid
Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Chimera
Green Gadget
Yellow Gadget

Your Draw: Rush Recklessly.

What do you do?
>>
>>1314340
>attack mode
>not defense mode

Is the plan to blow sakuretsu early? Or just lose red gadget for no reason? Because I'd rather save sakuretsu for use on a boss monster.
>>
>>1314373
summon drillroid
attack flying kamakiri
set rush recklessly
>>
>>1314380
well we set saku, protect gadget and summon chimera with red as tribute, at least thats what I thought his plan would be.
>>

Summon drillroid, attack #2, set rush recklessly.
>>
>>1314384
#2
>>
>>1314383
Oh, I thought we had dragon, not chimera. That's not terrible then.
>>
You summon Drillroid and set Rush Recklessly.

You move to battle phase. Drillroid attacks Flying Kamakiri #2.
Wisteria activates Negate attack and ends the Battle Phase. You pass.

TURN 5
GERARD 2400
WISTERIA 4000

She draws. She's brimming with the amount of confidence that may only mean one thing.

>I Sacrifice Flying Kamakiri # 2...

The Winning Card

>... to Tribute Summon Caius, The Shadow Monarch

And behold, the pack-fresh Ultra Rare monster appears on her side of the field. Other Rookies around you two don't hide their excitement, seeing the legendary high-profile monster.

>Caius's effect! I Banish Drillroid!

Just as it appeared not long ago, your new toy is removed from the ending game.

>Combat!
>Caius! Attack that guy directly!

The last thing you see is her face, grinning madly like a kid that just won her first tournament. Kinda cute.

...better Idea.

After deck edit, go back to the Hotel. We're gonna need BOXES for all the cards.
>>
I'm not sure whether someone's thinking really hard about deck edits; everyone glanced at the card list and decided to leave edits to someone else or I've managed to scare off all the players already. Either way, if someone needs me I'm probably watching something and may still make updates for the next 2 hours.
>>
>>1314964
I had class. I'll sort through this later. I suggest incentivizing getting rid of cards somehow, such as by trading them in at the card shop for dp. Boxes could work too though.
>>
>>1315125
That's what I thought of too, that is exchanging cards for DP, but I'm kinda afraind this would make burning through packs a little too fast. Still, might as well try it.

1 DP per common
2 per rare et cetera seems like an adequate enough for this really; and obviously you'd need to go to the store first. A bummer I did not think about this in advance.

Any and all feedback is encouraged, not only about that but anything else I royally screwed up in the last 4 days.
>>
This is a very nice quest.
>>
>>1314803
Replace drillroid for Cyber Dragon?
Rush for Monster Reborn?
>>
>>1315151
Okay, so, feedback time.

Firstly, on the subject of the junk in our trunk. I have taken the liberty of sorting our trunk. https://pastebin.com/n01dMgTa

I recommend creating a pastebin account and keeping tabs on our cards there. It'll take up way less space in the post to just repost the pastebin link and mention that you've updated it. I recommend keeping decklists there too. Don't forget to include the extra deck in the decklists- I don't see "master of oz" in the beast decklist you just posted. I also think we have gotten a few more "red gadget" than is listed in the trunk.

If you do want to incentivize getting rid of cards, either teach us safer ways to appease the duel spirits or bump that refund up to 10 dp per common (refunding a whole pack would still put us like 90 dp in the hole.)

Secondly: writing style.
Don't be afraid to do some speaking for us! Or to ask questions! Let NPC's get chatty! I'm going to care a lot more about winning, and therefore the bulk of the quest, if I like Redhat. And for that to happen, we need to get to know the guy. Maybe somebody asks us why we chose Cogworks over King of Beasts. Then we could answer that "we love to win" or "we don't get along with animals" or "we love machines like our dad works with" or something.

Similarly, we should have a reason Redhat wants to win. Does he have a dream of meeting Kaiba? Does he want glory? Is he just really bored? Is that other duelist a jerkass who needs to be knocked down a peg?

Variety of gameplay:
Imagine this scenario: Dick Jerkface is smugly declaring that only weenies use beast decks, which is why beast decks always lose. In defense of our friend Henry, we decide to beat that fucker with a beast deck. This sort of thing incentivizes the players to use more than just the "best" deck, keeping things fresh. Or perhaps a kid gives us a tip that our next opponent uses a lot of graveyard manipulation, it would allow us the opportunity to build a "remove from play" deck, or a "swarm and rush" deck to counter it.

Overall, the duelling is strong, but needs some amount of human drama to back it up. Scenes like
>He then confessed to "hotgluing" a set of Harpie Lady cards
are strong. Scenes like
>Oh no... I chose the wrong deck! - cries Henry, before running off.
are not.

Lastly, looking up card effects can get a little exhausting during big pack openings. It wouldn't hurt to change

Gyroid
Machina Defender
Cyber Laser Dragon
Photon Generator Unit
Evolution Burst (Rare)

to

Gyroid
Machina Defender
Cyber Laser Dragon
(That's strong! But I'll need photo-)
Photon Generator Unit
(!!!)
Evolution Burst (Rare)

in order to draw our attention to important cards.

Basically, the dueling and mechanical aspects are strong, but can still stand some tinkering. It's the flavor/story/character development that needs lots more of your attention.
>>
[b]
Organizational talk, people.
After this episode ends, which is soon, I'll create a new thread for episode 4 ownwards. The OP will include a summary of what happened and the pastebin files containing our cards.

Moreover, referring to the feedback: The initial idea was for a silent protag, but that might as well change a little starting next thread. This will obviously require a more defined character, which is also going to be aparrent soon (TM).
The bigger plot was also not supposed to appear for a while, but I might as well fasten its appearance a little.

Any objections?
>>
>>1316882
Sounds good, captain playmaker!
>>
>>1316882
...never update from phone again.
>>
You complete the changes to your deck:
3x Red Gadget
3x Yellow Gadget
3x Green Gadget
1x Cyber Dragon
1x Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beast
1x Boot-up Soldier- Dread Dynamo
1x Ancient Gear Gadjitron Chimera
1x Ancient Gear Gadjitron Dragon
1x Pot of Duality
1x Monster Reborn
1x Sakuretsu Armor
1x Dust Tornado

Just wanna say I like the quest, but I haven't actually played since the first set of cards. I'm leaving duels to the people that know what their doing.
>>

>Go to Cafe La Green
I'd rather do duel shrine stuff after we have a pastebin of cards.

>>
>>1317110
I'll swap >>1317202

>Go to Cafe La Geen
>>
So, another piece of feedback: it might be better to include cards in our decks in the "trunk" list rather than take them out, and instead of having "deck" lists which contain copies of cards, we have "decklists" which list what cards we use in that deck.

My reasoning is, a lot of cards we get we'll want to put in multiple decks, and that way we'd be able to put the same copy of a card in multiple decklists.

For instance, right now, if we built a cyber dragon deck we would likely want to include "polymerization". But as it is now, that would require an edit vote every time we wanted to switch our "polymerization" back and forth between our beast and cyber dragon decks. That'd get old fast.

So, unless it matters to you which physical pile our cards are in at any given time, this'd save us some trouble.
>>

Aren't Ojamas enough for ya?
>>
>>1325243
Nothing is ever enough. Buy yeah, if we keep pulling them I'll take a good look at deckbuilding. Same goes for Cyber dragons. As it stands though, we don't quite have enough for a deck that would be as good as I would like, and it's hard to "splash" cards into a 20 card deck. Still might though. We'll see.

But yeah, I'm on board the Ojama train assuming we can pull Ojama king or Ojama Country or something.
>>
>>1325337
Don't look at me, it's not like I control what you pull or anything.

I'll probably start the next thread when I wake up a couple hours from now, assuming I'll finally get to wake up without a spltting headache.
>>
>>1325337
Ojama is a fun deck. Doubly so if we can get syncs and some Genex Ally Birbman.
Drop Red, fill our zones with Ojamas, Return Red to hand with Birbmans effect, sync for a 5 or 7.
Also in a format with only 3 zones Knight and Kings effects can be really painful.
>>
>>1325755
Don't forget Ojama Trio. Fieldwipe then that is a perfect stall in a three zone variation.
>>
>>1326069
So what you're saying is, we will kill the Kaiba by filling his field with Ojamas. Then slowly build up our field while he can do nothing. OJAMA DELTA HURRICANE him for 900 then poly into King locking him out of using his blue-eyes forever?

Radical
>>
>>1326156
We need to do some prior damage though. Admittedly just a scratch, but still.
>>
>>1326156
Sorry, misread. I was thinking fieldwipe, then Ojama Trio. When the moment comes, Fuse King, then Ojamuscle and direct attack. Total of 3900 points of damage. However, it occurs to me that we could add Ojama Country. That would do it.
