Welcome to Phase Quest! You live in New Autumn City, a place of hope, of freedom, and a promise of a better future- just not for you. You are a super, imprisoned on this island to keep the “mundanes” of the outside world safe. In fact, the whole city is inhabited by supers.

You are Tyler Fortune, a plucky college student with the power of luck and chaos spheres. Last we left off, you were trying to save your friend Mark from mysteries punk gangsters called the Razors. You teamed up with members of another gang called the Jets, and a mysterious vigilante that you are certain is your friend Kathryn from school.

I'm planning on writing a character/gang list, will post it when I finish.

"Spare Time - Club Drive" is the theme of the current arc.

You stand at the threshold of the door that leads to Mark. Only a few goons remain behind you. Kathryn is dueling a mysterious masked woman on the platform above you. What do you do?

> A. Finish off the goons and help Kathryn

> B. Assign some to stay and help here, while you go through the door with the remaining group members

> C. Go through with everyone. Kathryn can handle herself.

> D. Write In.

You take a deep breath and steel yourself once everyone is gathered up. The metal clanging of swords and the footsteps of goons coming down the stairs echoes above you.

“We don’t have a lot of time,” you say. “TK, Matt, Roquette. Stay up here and finish off the last goons, then help out Ka- the vigilante. I’m gonna go save Mark with Comet, Kyle, and Mohammed.”

“Alright, dude. Be careful in there. As soon as we’re done up here,” Roquette grins, “and that won’t take long, we’ll meet back up with you.”

You nod, and the other group runs out into the open using Matt as a shield to fight. You turn back to the door, and after a second of hesitation, you… wait, how the hell does this thing work? You begin running your hands along the smooth surface, but you can’t find any kind of knob or handle. After a second, your hand brushes against a nub on the side of the threshold. There is a soft ding, and the door slides open to reveal a tiny room.

It’s… an elevator?

Before you say anything, Comet, Kyle, and Mohammed pile in. They look at you expectantly, and you follow them. The doors slide closed, and the elevator begins moving downward. It isn’t a long trip. Less than ten seconds pass before the doors quietly slide back open. You exit into a dim and dingy hallway made of cracked concrete. You can hear voices from around the corner of the hall. You gesture toward the others to be quiet, and sneak to the end of the hall before peering around the corner.

Fuck.

Hospital gurneys line the walls of the room, and strange tubes are hooked up to them. You see about 30 handcuffed and gagged college students on the floor in the corner of the room… they look terrified. Mark is one of them. He’s pulling on his handcuffs, but even with his super strength he doesn’t seem to be able to get rid of them.
>>
>>1297090

Your attention is drawn to a man in a lab coat as he walks in front of your friend. You’re confused to see that he’s wearing what looks like a moose skull on his head as a makeshift helmet or mask. He’s writing on a clipboard, then points at a young girl with his pen. The large black man with chains wrapped around his arms walks toward and picks her up. She struggles as hard as she can, but the man doesn’t even seem to register her.

He places her on one of the gurneys, and the moose skull man hooks up tubes to her. Fluids begin circulating, and the girl goes limp. Soon, you see a red-orange viscous liquid being sucked out of her through a tube…

“Oh God, they’re taking her blood…” Comet gasps in disgust.

“They’re also taking her fever. I’m sure that’s what they want,” Kyle replies angrily.

“What’s the plan?” Mohammed asks, turning toward you.

> A. “We have the element of surprise, they have no idea we’re here. Let’s sneak up on them… somehow.”

> B. “Let’s charge in. Look, they don’t even know we’re here. It could work.”

“We’re gonna rush them,” you say. You reach into your pocket and slide out your aluminum baseball bat, holding it tightly.

“...Rush them?” Comet replies, giving you a doubtful look.

“Look, just trust me. They don’t know we’re here. If we catch them by surprise, we’ll be in and out. You two take out the big guy. I’ll take out the doctor dude.”

They nod at you, and you count down from three with your fingers.

3. Mohammed cracks his knuckles.

2. Comet charges her power.

1. You take a breath.

As soon as you hit zero, the three of you sprint around the corner. You bash the rack of tubes attached to the girl on the gurney as you beeline for the doctor. To your surprise he simply stares at you.

The big black guy, on the other hand, does not seem as calm and collected as his partner.

“What the fuck?? Who- what-” he yells angrily as Mohammed pounces him.

You smile; you guys have this in the bag. You hop over another gurney and wind up your swing.

“Don’t… kidnap people!” You yell. Well, for your first one liner, it could have been worse. You swing…

And miss. What?

You look down at your bat to see that it’s bent down to the grip, curling into itself. That can’t be good you think, then feel the bat force you backward, flinging you into the wall.

You shake yourself off and look up to see the black man holding up Mohammed with one hand, choking him out. Comet is pulling herself off the ground, it looks like she took a bad hit.

You see the doctor walking slowly toward you. Shitshitshitshit

“Do you really think you could have stopped me, the Helm Street Butcher, with a bat?” The doctor says as he approaches you. He lets out a short, slightly crazed chuckle, then continues. “I can bend and control metal to my will. Your aluminum does nothing to me.”

You grit your teeth and slowly rise to your feet. You don’t have many options right now. Your revolver is with TK, your bat is currently a pretzel, and the closest thing in your pocket to being a weapon is your baseball. You glance at your fever watch as the “Helm Street Butcher” continues to monologue. 68%. It’s going down, slowly but surely, but too not fast enough. Shit. It might be your only option.

You wince as you feel the baseball bat bend itself tightly around your left wrist and pinning you to the wall.

“Now I’m going to suck out your fever essence to create… Ultra.” The Butcher explains. You can see a glimpse of the wild look in his green eyes through the moose skull mask.

“Fuck that, man.” You state, and point your finger at the doctor. A yellow glowing sphere appears around him, and he immediately raises his hands to his head, wailing in frustration. You feel the bat loosen around you, and you pry your arm free. This should buy you at least a minute. Your fever watch beeps; 93%. You are in critical mutation danger right now. In fact, you feel sweat beading on your forehead as your internal temperature raises above what it should be.

Okay, okay. One minute to get shit done.

> A. Take out the Butcher while he’s disoriented… but how?

You look at your friends struggling against buff guy, then you look back at moose skull man. He destroyed your favorite bat.

He’s not getting away with that.

You crack your knuckles, and begin walking toward the Butcher. He strains his neck to look up at you, and pitifully raises one of his arms in defense. Your walk breaks into a run, then into a full sprint, then…

You feel power you didn’t know you had surge through your leg. Your calf muscles ripple, and you feel extremely lucky.

“Don’t. Fucking. KIDNAP PEOPLE!” You scream as you unleash your devastating fury of kicks into his testicles. He groans a groan of pure anguish and collapses to the floor, unconscious from the pain. You look down at him, and give him one more dick kick, for good measure.

“Tyler! Fuckin’... Help, dude!” Mohammed yells from across the room. You look over to see him barely hanging onto the big guy’s arm as he’s swung around, while Comet stands behind them charging her next attack.

You begin to head toward them when you feel an intense pain in your leg, the same one you kicked the Butcher with. That seems bad.

> B. Search the prisoners for Cryo. You are getting way too close to mutating.

Your walk turns into a limp, and you realize that your fever might be worse off than you thought. You hesitate, then turn away from Comet and Mohammed.

“Do any of you have Cryo?” You ask to the bound students. Most of them just stare back at you, some of them shake their heads no, but a couple nod. One of them is Mark. You quickly come up to him and kneel down, tearing the duct tape from his mouth.

“Mudder fucker, it took you long enough,” He says as soon as his mouth is free.

“Yeah yeah, just tell me where the Cryo is. Sorry, I’m kinda busy right now.”

“My pocket, it’s in my pocket. You’ve got this, dude.”

You reach into Mark’s pocket, and after a moment of uncomfortable searching, your hand wraps around something cylindrical that you’re pretty sure isn’t his dick. You pull out your hand and, to your relief, it’s a vial of Cryo. You immediately press the tip of it into your leg, and you feel a cool numbing wash spread through you. You glance at your fever watch to see it fall down to 66%.

There’s a loud crash behind you, and you turn to see Mohammed get bashed against the wall several times by the big dude. You see his eyes flutter shut, and a small stain of blood where his head hit the wall. Comet yells out in what could have been fear or anger and hits the man, sending him flying into a gurney.

“You’re gonna pay for that, little lady,” he growls, pulling himself back to his feet. As he approaches her, Comet takes a couple steps backward then stumbles, tripping and falling to the ground. The man smiles, showing a missing tooth, then reels up his giant fist and… once again goes flying, this time slamming his head into the wall.

Roquette, flowing with her yellow aura, jumps onto him with eyes filled with rage. She begins bashing him in the face over and over, screaming “DON’T. MESS. WITH. MY. SISTER!”
Once she’s done the man falls unconscious, now missing more than one tooth.

“Damn, Roquette,” You say, patting her on the back.

“Thanks, he deserved it,” She retorts, wiping blood off her knuckles.

You turn to see Kyle healing Mohammed, and you’re relieved to see that Kathryn is okay. The others free the prisoners using a set of keys they found on the Butcher. As you turn to speak to Roquette, you stop as you hear the faint sounds of police sirens in the distance.

“Well Tyler, this is what you wanted. Quantum is here to save the day… from vigilantes like you,” Roquette says smugly, pressing her index finger against your chest.

“Alright… um…” You mumble as you think of a way out of this predicament.

“All the prisoners are untied!” Comet announces.

“Okay… okay! Guys, we need to act like one of them,” You announce, and begin ruffling your hair with your hand.

“What?” Roquette asks. You lean down and begin wiping dirt on your face.

“We need to look like victims. They have no way of knowing that vigilantes were here. Well, except for the dead bodies. Uh… Whatever, it doesn’t matter. We can put all our weapons and stuff in my pocket,” You say, and stretch out your jacket’s pocket.

Roquette looks you, then your pocket, then back at you as if you’re crazy.

“Huh? Oh! You don’t know! Okay, well…” You pick up your bent baseball bat with the Avarice Academy logo on it, and call over Comet.

“Can you bend this to be straight?” She gives you a weird look but agrees, bending the bat back into its original shape. You take it back from her, and slide it into your pocket. Roquette and Comet grin at each other as if they just saw a magic trick.

“Aren’t you guys, like, hardened criminals? This… this is what got you?” You say.

“I dunno. I like the little things,” Comet replies cheerily.

You sigh and walk toward Kathryn. She hands you her sword gingerly, and you slide it into subspace. You look at her again, expectantly. She stares back, silent.

“You know… you can drop the act. I know it’s you, Kath. You need to give me the mask.”

She stares for another moment, then you hear a muffled sigh.

“Yeah. Fine.”

The vigilante removes her mask to reveal…

Well, yeah. It’s Kathryn. You debate asking her why, but then decide you can just do that later.

You finish circling the room, collecting any evidence that can be used against you, then you turn to the small crowd of bystanders.

“Hey. We saved you, alright? So… don’t sell us out, ‘k?” You announce. Most of them nod with grateful smiles, but a couple look at you with either disdain or fear.

“And what if we do? Are you going to slaughter us, like you did to the men outside? Beat us to a bloody pulp, like you did to that guy?” One girl asks, pointing to the burly black man.

“I- what? Are you seriously going to do this? After what we did for you?” You reply, feeling anger bubbling up inside.

“Quantum would have saved us. All you did was hurt people.” She continues.

The girl who spoke up looks away, uncomfortable, while the others watch you, clearly on your side. You gather yourself, taking a deep breath.

“Here’s what’s gonna happen. We’re all gonna go out there, and us “vigilantes” are going to stay quiet. Please, just… help us like we helped you,” you finish. You’re greeted with several whoops and cheers.

Kyle nods at you kindly, then begins directing people onto the elevator. After a few minutes, most of the victims have gone upstairs. It’s your turn.

“Alright, just… act natural?” You say.

“Natural. My middle name,” TK replies.

Your group then loads onto the elevator, and begins to head up. There’s a ding, and the doors open.

You see the prior battleground now full of Quantum officers wearing black visors, putting blankets on scared college students and leading them outside. You can see flashing red and blue lights through the hole the truck made.

You turn to ask Comet what her thoughts are, only to see that she, Roquette, and Kyle are already gone. Probably a good idea. You begin to walk away from the commotion when you hear a voice yell out after you, “Hey, stop!”

“Is there a problem, officer?” You ask hesitantly.

He turns away from the other officer and begins approaching you, pulling out a pair of handcuffs similar to the ones used on the victims.

“Yes, actually. You’re under arrest.” He says. Before you can move you are grabbed from behind by another officer, and the cuffs are snapped onto your wrists a bit too tightly.

“What? Based on what grounds?” You exclaim.

“Based on the grounds of you being a potential suspect,” He retorts.

“You can’t just do that! We’re victims here!” Kathryn yells. People are beginning to look in your direction. You make eye contact with the girl from earlier; she shoots you a smug grin.

“That’s not my problem! Just shut up and-” the officer begins, but is interrupted.

“Officer, please. Release these kids.” A voice drawls from behind him. The officer turns to reveal a man you’ve seen many times on television. His salt and pepper hair, his glasses, his charismatic smile…

It’s Richard Adder, the president of Quantum.

“I- Yes sir.” The black mask says. He pulls out his key and unlocks your cuffs, grumbling under his breath.

You and Richard Adder watch him leave, and once he’s out of earshot, Adder turns back to you with an embarrassed smile.

“My apologies. My men are used to dealing with gangsters and vigilantes… Dangerous criminals. Please excuse him.”

“It’s okay, I guess…” you reply, rubbing your wrists.

“You kids wouldn’t happen to know about any of that, would you?” he continues, his smile remaining but his eyes narrowing.

You feel your breath get caught in your throat, but before you can say anything, Kathryn speaks up.

“No, nothing. Are we free to go?”

Adder’s lips turn into a small, annoyed frown for a split second, before he leans back and lets out a chuckle.

“Of course, of course. Go ahead,” he says. Kathryn immediately moves past him. You follow, giving Adder a sheepish “thanks,” as you go.

“Oh, and remember. Quantum is always watching,” he states severely, before he shoots you his familiar smile again, “so we’re always there to help.”

You find yourself outside, following the others until the sirens are far enough in the distance that you can speak freely.

“Fuck, that was close,” Matt says with a sigh.

You couldn't agree more. Actually, you should be terrified, but… you feel really good. You saved people. You’re… a hero.

As you head toward the exit, you make eye contact with a man leaning against a support column. He wears a purple jacket with a fur collar, and has an eyepatch over his left eye. He flips a quarter, watching you as you leave.

Why does Quantum ignore gang violence but kill vigilantes tho? Couldn't we just be a vigilante as long as we're in a gang?
>>
>>1305752
They don't ignore gang violence, technically. You'll learn more about the mechanics of Quantum as the story progresses, but they do focus more on vigilantes than on gangs. The idea is that if you're a "vigilante" in a gang, you're just a gang member. A vigilante, to Quantum, is someone who takes the law into their own hands and fights for what they think is right. Gangs, on the other hand, fight against one another for their motives as a whole.

Quantum will pay attention when innocent civilians get caught in the crossfire of course, like the kidnappings for example, but other than that if the gangs stay out of Quantum's business then Quantum stays out of theirs.
>>
>>1306033
^ That was me, btw
>>
>>1306033
Why does Quantum consider fighting for what a vigilante thinks is right to be worse than a gang member fighting for the gangs motives? It should be the other way around, right? Gangs usually steal or use force to acquire money, goods, and power, and kill opposition. Maybe even worse than that, if this cult is widespread. Vigilantes kill criminals, they're absolutely murderers, but they should do far less damage to public order than gangs. It makes no sense that gangs are less pursued.
>>

> glasses
Fuck, no wonder she was such a cunt.
Shitty glasses is already the worst... aside from those kidnappers i guess..
>>
>>1306685
Now that we're a vigilante anyway we should stalk and murder her.

Or slash her tires.
>>
>>1306116
But that's the thing, gangs don't tend to do much damage to the public in this city. Often their fights solely take place with each other. This situation, with a gang kidnapping civilians, is extremely rare, and Quantum acted on it with severe force. Hence why Richard Adder showed up. This is a big deal.

Vigilantes, on the other hand, often get in the way of Quantum, and they go against their agenda. If people start using their powers to liberate others, who's to say the whole city won't be liberated and fight back aaginst UNAC?

With gangs fighting each other and not thinking about freedom or the outside world, Quantum is happy. With vigilantes fighting for justice and freedom, Quantum starts to get worried.

Does that make sense?
>>
>>1306116
You're right, Quantum should be going after gangs. They should be trying to stop gang violence. But they don't, because they're a shady corporation acting as a makeshift government, and they care less about their citizens and more about their own power.
>>
>>1307902
Kinda. I got the sense that vigilantes only really went after gangs, and gangs undermined Quantum. The way you put it, it's like there's almost an unspoken agreement between Quantum and the gangs of the city, where if they leave Quantum alone they get left alone. Otherwise, Quantum crushes them mercilessly. Is that right?

Vigilantes to me are people who take the law into their own hands and injure or kill criminals. In this specific instance we fought to free our classmates, but I didn't think that was a common situation. Do gangs regularly capture people to harvest their Fever? Do vigilantes do anything else to piss off Quantum besides what they represent? If a vigilante did nothing but track down and kill gang members would Quantum go after them seriously?
>>
>>1309121
Yes, you have the "unspoken agreement" between Quantum and gangs very right. And again, Tyler doesn't really know this stuff so I'll explain it better in-story.

No, harvesting Fever is not a normal thing. It's unheard of, actually.

Yes, it really is mostly what they represent. Image is very important to Quantum, as it's their main tool of keeping the people of New Autumn under their thumb. As soon as that power slips, riots are bound to ravage the streets.

Kathryn is an example of a vigilante that goes after criminals and gang members. The problem is, word was spreading about her and her deeds. As soon as she starts bringing hope to people, hope that they can fight too, Quantum MUST shut that down. Therefore, zero tolerance for vigilantes. On the other hand, gangs bring no hope. They are living proof that fighting with powers is an issue, and they essentially prove UNAC right about supers being dangerous. That is why gangs are useful to Quantum, and why Quantum tolerates them.
>>
>>1316803
Wow that sucks for people with powers.

What would happen if a gang decided to stop all illicit activity other than taking down rival gangs? Essentially becoming a gang of vigilantes that work to better whatever city they're based in? Crushed extra hard?

On that note, you're gonna have to see ;) Planning on continuing in like an hour or two
