/qst/ - Quests

Hello again fellow creators of /qst/. After a brief hiatus on my part, I'm here again to begin our journey into the Regional Evolution of our Moon Worlds. We will be starting with Region 1 of Janus.

As GM, I'll do my best to actively work on phylogeny charts to track the evolutions, and also make random events for the world to drive evolution down new paths. Since this is the first time I've done EvoGames focused in a Regional perspective I'll be experimenting with how I approach these threads for better viability later on. Also we will be going to Region 1 of Rienia next thread to explore life's evolution there.

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Details indicating what the generation of your species is important. Please indicate. (Base Organisms are Generation 0)
• Details regarding a creatures size or name are encouraged, but not required.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything silly or derailing will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic in biological standards.
• Everyday I'll add an update Phylogeny Chart to track changes. These take awhile, so please be patient.
• Expect a Random World Event at least once per thread to shake up the world and game.
• There will be no Mass Extinction Event in the near future, so enjoy building and evolving to your hearts content.
• When this thread reaches its endpoint, we will be switching back over to Moon World Rienia next thread.
• Have fun

New to the Game?:
• Don't be shy. If you have an idea for an organism and want to spend the time making it, please by all means do so.
• We also have a Discord to keep you up to date on EvoGame activities, and chat with other folks and myself. https://discord.gg/kk8eJgJ
• I have begun work on an Imgur Gallery to track evolution and provide up-to-date info on each world. It will be posted in the near future.
• There is a Blank Template that you can use to make any organisms you wish to make for this game below.
• Just a note, while it doesn't matter how intertwined your organism is with the rest of ecosystem, the more dependent it is on the existence of other creatures, the more potential your organism has to survive.

The Description of the present Janus, Setting, and, and more will be posted in supplementary posts.

Present Setting: As Janus enters the Late Magedivatian Era, another tectonic shift expands and molds the ocean's currents. This shift of the Janus' landmasses adjusts the global thermohaline circulation of the worlds oceans, bringing with it warm waters currents that reach far beyond its tropics. For Region 1 (Needs a name) life's Golden Age of Biodiversity continues to flourish as warm winds and consistent rain, keeps these islands and small landmasses constantly warm and wet. The expansive and nutrient rich waters and coastlines of Region 1 leave marine life with little threat of ecological change, while providing new niches for life to take hold in. On land, life slowly takes its first steps away from the water entirely, as the first semblance of a terrestrial ecosystem takes hold on these tropical islands.

--Planetary Statistics--
Atmosphere: 78% Nitrogen, 12% Oxygen, 6% Argon, 2% Carbon Dioxide, 2% Other Gases
Average Global Temperature: 76°F (24°C)

The fins of the Caldirt grow stronger and eventually solidify into short stubby limbs which rapidly develop additional joints, allowing them to actually be used as legs. A similar process affects the hind limbs, allowing the creature to scuttle around seeking plant based food.
>>
Before I begin this I want to clarify that in my copypasta of the post above, please ignore the first two rules of Organism Advancement. They don't apply in the Regional Setting.

--Regional Evolution Rules--
> If necessary, specify which landmass/geographic area an organism exists in. (This is heavily encouraged, but not a requirement).
> Marine and Aquatic Organisms may only exist in the either the Freshwater Basin, or the Shallow Seas/Coastline
> Organisms from the Shallow Seas/Coastline are the only organisms that can freely travel throughout the region and to other regions. (This must be specified in your evolution post)
> Aquatic and Terrestrial Organisms from the Freshwater Basin and/or the Fertile Lowlands may only travel between neighboring landmasses (Interconnections of landmasses can be found below).
> An evolution that impacts the same organism throughout the whole region is allowed, but must be specified in your post.
> If you as a creator wish to establish the existence of a new ecosystem, feel free to specify this and post what organisms would belong in this new ecosystem.

--Landmasses & Interconnections--
> The Aracana Archipelago is entirely isolated.
> Isla Obscura is interconnected with the Tenebris Archipelago.
> The Tenebris Archipelago is interconnected with Isla Obscura and the Intraveritas Archipelago.
> Island 1 is interconnected with Interveritas and the Intraveritas Archipelago.
> Inveritas, Extraveritas, and the Intraveritas Archipelago are all interconnected with each other.

--Additional/Misc. Stuff--
> The following geographic locations still need names. Feel free to give them a name at your leisure. The Region may also be named but should be unanimously agreed on.
Ocean 1
Sea 1
Sea 2
Gulf 2
Gulf 6
Island 1
> This is a one-man job I've been doing here for the most part. If you think and/or want to provide me with resources to help improve the quality of information we have for the worlds (Food Webs, Trophic Levels, Mapping of individual Landmasses, Etc.) this would be welcomed and greatly appreciated.
> Fanart is also accepted, and low-key encouraged.

That's all folks. Thanks for being patient on the setup time for this, and get to evolving life.

The Caldirts that get onto the Arcana Archipelago are faced with a situation where there are very few real preditors there for them.

So they not only lose their camoflage, as the colouring pigments in their shell are absorbed into larger proteins, but they also get larger, but less pointy mouth tools, to cut down dusty trees more efficiently, but that are simply less strong as defensive tools.

In some of the larger islands of the Arcana, these Blue Caldirts scuttle around the lowlands in huge numbers without a care, decimating the local dusty tree populations.

Some Stridler develop an additional joint on their feet, providing additional stability when moving only on the front two limbs. This proves very useful when attempting to escape predators, but the tail somewhat slows them down. To combat this their tails shorten and develop a flattened end. This flat end allows it to be used in daily movement, but also allows it to be used like a spring, providing the newly named "High-Heeled Stridler" with a little extra boost to help them get started with their running when predators show up.

Additionally, now that they are less likely to be viciously murdered, they grow a little larger

This is kind of rough, but I took a stab at making a food web for the shallow seas. On the right are some plants that don't have any marine herbivores associated with them. The Cleana was paired symbiotically with the Weird-Mouthed Twizzler, but I'm assuming they moved to the Ab Chomper and Barnacald here instead. The reason the Kinacopter seems like the ultimate apex predator is because all the species that hunt it are in the open ocean. Finally, everything should link down to the decomposer level but I didn't feel like doing all of that work.
>>
>>1263970
I took the liberty of making a slight change to Caldroo's diet in Region 1 to give it more presence when I was placing organisms.

Caldroo are primarily Scavenger/Dertrivore, but I was also suggesting that they have the inclination to be Opportunist Hunters too, preying on weak/dying organisms.

Otherwise, the chart looks great.
>>
>>1264022
Right, also, everything on these charts is 100% not canon unless OP says otherwise.
>>
OK for this one I put the Swole Skelker under herbivore because it technically eats plants, even if they are faster computer plants. Also, the Kappagetta is probably similar to the Caldroo in that it mostly decomposes stuff but will try to eat whatever it can.
>>
>>1263970
Also, Cald's are Omnivores, which means they would also eat the Base Algea and Base Kina when able.

With this last tidbit in mind, I'd probably call this canon.
>>
>>1264069
shit, i moved them up to the omnivore level but forgot to redraw the arrows

aaaand one more. Didn't realize how few predators this region had, IIRC all the good stuff was over in the east hemisphere. W/ever, that just means more room for improvement here.

In the freshwater basins a new breed of Cald emerge called the "Cald Worm" and they are singularly predatory. Their front ends are wider than the base Cald's and these wider fronts are home to a lamprey like jaw and the horns typical of the Cald. The Cald Worms lodge these horns into the bodies of the prey and remain attached to the poor bugger as they begin to gnaw their fill of flesh off the body. They then detach and once again swim through the waters of the freshwater basins and shallow seas.

their small size means that they aren't much of a threat individually, but a large group of them can mean trouble.

Unless you make it part of their life cycle like salmon or whatever, most organisms can't really move between fresh and salt water.

Some Dirtungoid begin hunting the Caldirt and occasional young/weakened Stridler. They get more developed nostrils and teeth, and grow larger to be able to overpower prey.

AS some stridlers move onto the main island of the Arcana Archipelago, they find their nests in the rocky cliffs in its north. There, they can nest without fear of breditors, and only are in danger when they come down to eat Mat algae.

To get up to the rocky cliffs, they develop their tail into a muscular third leg like impliment, that can give stabilazation and force when they jump, for which their front legs are now better suited. This way they can jump from rock to rock until they are high enough up to feel safe.

They also lose the sexual dimorphism with their fins as a whole.

You see, the Swole Skelker is a big fella, bigger than most other land based species. As such, most creatures trying to defend themselves from a Skelker will be attacking the Skleker's underside. Some Dancing Kamoina adapt to a freshwater environment, specifically the swamps of the Tenebris Archipelago. There, they adopt an amphibious, semi-arboreal lifestyle. During the day, they stay in the marshes to avoid drying out, nibbling on roots, avoiding predators, and engaging in social play behavior; at night, they emerge to climb the sides of the trees and gorge themselves on the leaves of the Swampy Tree. They lose their jet organ, since they no longer need to avoid fast marine predators, and get better tentacles.

Some Kinail evolve to fit a parasitic niche. They use their wings to fly between larger terrestrial animals with soft, exposed flesh, typically Stridler and Swole Skelker, and use their claws and long tongues to lap up small amount of blood. They also develop thin-walled blood vessels in the wing membrane, letting them breath better, but as this leaves them exposed to disease and infection they get in the habit of folding their legs up when not flying.

Let's try this again. This time I actually looked at the initial phylogeny charts.

This pie chart demonstrates the hawa species distribution at the end of last Riennia thread.

Each of the slices is one Gen 2 lineage, apart from Other (which consists of the basal hawa, the nostril hawa, the bristle hawa, the false colonist hawa and two generations of slippery hawa).

In total, I found there to be 74 extant hawa species.

Is this based on total evolutions, or number of final/end species on each branch? I.E. is it measuring # of new evos or # of unique species?
>>
>>1269061

It measured how many of _extant_ species (organism images) are in each of these lineages at the end of last thread.

The Cald worm becomes thinner and longer, as their whole makeup becomes more primitive: Most of their muscles and organs in their body are in their 'head', where their sharp toothed mouths eat further and further into its prey, with most of its body being one large stomach, to fill the Caldworm up and sustain it for a long period of time until another animal comes along.

The only other movable muscles, those at their fins, are mostly used for steering towards prey, rather than actual locomotion.

Additionally, they find that their drill-like mouths are something of a problem during the digging, as they often get dirt stuck in them. This can cause all sorts of nasty infections so they develop a beak over the drill, to protect it from the dirt. The drills themselves grow smaller and now function more like a fusion of teeth and a tongue, mulching the food that finds its way into the Tunler’s mouth into an easy-to-swallow pulp. The brighter the light from the tendrils and the more exuberant the swinging the more likely it is a male will find a female. On the veritas landmasses, the Bloom Borgetta evolves to become slimmer and more agile, developing a tail that improves its balance, etc. This makes it more effective at escaping predator.

Due to this, the Borgetta's leaves have got smaller, giving it less of an ability to remain agile and fast while only relying on photosynthesis. Counter-acting this, the Tailed Borgetta develops a small stomach, allowing it to digest simple sugars found in the plants growing in the area.

On the Arcana Archipelago, there are less Skelkers. This lack of predators have caused the Bloom Borgetta there to evolve to a more sedentary life. It's false flower grows larger, aiding it in its photosynthesis. Generally the Bloom Borgetta stays in one place for hours and then slowly walks around for several hours more before entering a false sleep once it turns into nighttime. The fastest it can run if preyed upon is about the same speed as a human walking in a brisk pace.

The Barnaconch on Aracana thicken their saliva into a sticky, viscous mucus that tastes terrible but is a perfect growing medium for the symbiotic algae that they feed on. This prevents other species of herbivore from opportunistically feeding off of them, and discourages the few predators they have. The Barnaconch also start to congregate together along riverbanks and lakesides, literally and metaphorically pooling their mucus for better protection.

These new "Latcher Dirtungoid" use their claws to catch hold of and kill prey. They favour the Vampire Kinail and the Leaping Kinail as both are smaller than them and therefore easier to kill

They also develop claws on the base of each foot, allowing them to better climb things and grow somewhat bigger.

The Barnacald in the waters around the Intraveritas Archipelago get a thinner, more flexible foot, which allows them to leave behind their sessile lifestyle and swim by moving it in a ripple motion. Since this makes them a much easier target, they develop a fast and long-acting toxin that causes vivid hallucinations in small doses and full seizures in larger amounts; this substance is spread throughout their muscle tissues, making them extremely dangerous prey. The first strain, the Crawl Lantea, mutates to grow multiple stems, making use of the ample space for absorbing sunlight found further inland. It's usually found growing next to other Crawl Lanteas, their multiple stems entwining and forming a kind of shrub-carpet capable of spanning several kilometers uninterrupted.

The second strain, the Lowland Lantea, grows a thicker and stronger stem allowing it to stand up, while still quite bent over. These can generally be found growing in areas with few trees and other objects stealing sunlight, usually on Mat Grass plains and jutting out from Crawl Lantea carpets.

--Region Event: The Typhoons of Aetheria--

The unique geographic positioning of the Aetheria Region landmasses creates tropical weather corridors that spawn powerful typhoons during every warm season. These storms ride along the currents impacting coastlines adjacent to these warm ocean currents that drive the storms. Only occasionally do these storm deal a great amount of damage to local fauna/flora populations, but otherwise life is unaffected by these events. Geographically however, the overall climate of these coastlines that are battered by annual typhoons begin to become more marsh-like in nature, allowing the appearance/expansion of the marshland environment.

The Caldirt that live on the Veritas group of landmasses grow several times larger to deal with predation, as well as allowing them to store more food and better resist winds of the yearly typhoons. To compensate for this change, they develop basic terrestrial circulatory and respiratory systems. To breath, they have three pairs of short tubes at the bases of their hind legs, connected to internal organs that look similar to bellows which are connected to the muscles of the legs; when they walk, the movement causes these organs to expand and contract, pulling in air. The oxygen in the air is exchanged to the blood, which is pumped by a pair of organs, similar to very thick blood vessels, which are compressed by the forelegs. Due to this, it is necessary for the Varitanian Caldirt to constantly move at least some of its legs; due to the simplicity of its nervous system, it requires no sleep and is thus always active.

With the change in the environment the Crawling Borgetta undergoes drastic changes. Its internal stem once again turns back outside. Being sharp and stiff, it is used to bury/anchor to tidal areas of the marshlands. The Borgetta no longer moves about, instead it remains permanently in one place. Its leaves also deteriorate, making them unusable for locomotion.

To protect itself from the predation of herbivores and the annoyance of pests (such as the Kinail) the Borgetta's circuitry has gone through an unusual adaption. The circuitry charges the Borgetta with static electricity and once a creature gets to close they get shocked. It's enough to temporarily stun larger animals (serving as a deterent) and enough to kill a smaller animal.

These Borgettas are called Lightning Borgettanas.

For most creatures, the swamp means less nutrients. Not so the Fungalgae. The monsoons blow dead matter, both plant and animal, into the swamps every rainy season, leaving them their to rot, and be eaten up by the Fungalgae networks.

So plentiful is the energy, that the maintainance of more sophisticated colonies is possible, with dedicated consumption-cells and wall-cells and redistribution-cells.

All this fermentation in a now closed body means that the fungalgaecolonies get inflated by noxious gasses which keep them afloat on the shallow swamp water.

A mutation that might seem detremental at first occurs, namely that excess sugar, which can't be used for rampant expansion anymore since the organism has a somewhat defined border, pops up in tumour-like structures on the Fungalgae's surface. It can be now eaten by herbivorous animals, depriving the Fungalgae of nutrients in the short run.

But the fact that animals brave the deeper regions of the swamp for the small sugar doses, often getting stuck and dying in the process, means that in the long term, the Fungalgae has more nutrients available to it consistently in the form of the corpses of baited animals.

--Region Event: Rise of the Aetherian Mattorals--

Shortly after the stabilization of the wet-typhoon seasons during the warm season of Aetheria, this leads to minor, yet significant climate change to the Mendacium Islands and Isla Obscura. Large swathes of these islands rapidly develop a cool mediterranean climate, similar to the Chilean Matorral. The two island clusters experience mild and semi-arid weather throughout the warm season, being prone to frequent bushfires that wipe out swathes of vegetated land, leaving the surviving plants and animals to adapt to frequent migration and/or tolerance to the dry, fire-prone land. It is only during the cooler, winter-like season on these islands where heavy rain and snowfall provide no more than an average of 200mm of precipitation annually.

--Regional Impact--
> New habitat, Cool Mediterranean is now present in the Aetherian Region.
> Organisms in image presented are present in the habitat as of now.
> Only organisms from the Freshwater Basin and Fertile Lowlands may migrate to these habitats.
