You reach deep into your pocket. “But I do have a gift for you. It’s in my pants,” You keep digging, “Somewhere.” She must know what it is already because her eyes go wide. There it is! You present her with a moon stone. "Here!"

“How...how did you know I caught a Nidoran?”

“You did? Oh, congratulations!” You shake her hand. “Can I see him? Or is it a her?”

“No you may not.” She examines the stone, then puts it in her bag. “Thank you. But don’t think you’ll see me do something stupid like rush to evolve it before it’s ready.”

That last comment seems less harsh in tone. More like she’s just doing her rounds than trying to make you upset. Still, you wish she’d be a little nicer. “So, how to the gym badges work?”

“Hmm. Yes. So, that badge of yours, the Warmth badge. That’s different than my Torch badge. There’s also the Wildfire badge, but neither of us got that one.”

“But why are they different?”

She looks actually happy, like she forgot to be miserable by mistake. She must like talking about this stuff. “You know how some gyms are inherited, and some are replaced?”

You nod. You’re not sure of the exacts, but you’ve heard stories where gym’s battle to decide who will be the gym for that area. But you’ve also heard how gyms will be passed down to pupils or children.

“Well, in Loanah, each gym leader is expected to have their own unique take or brand on what sort of gym leader they want to be. The founder of the fire gym was a warm, caring man. His pupil was brash and wild. Reckless, even. And the fire priest we fought is the latest gym leader, and he sees his way as being focused, and doing a lot with a small start. Like using a series of well placed, small fires to take out the old temple.”

Oh! That makes sense. And the electric gym leader was new, so he only had the one type.

She goes on to tell you a lot about how the gyms and temples work. They’re not inherently tied together, but there’s a lot of overlap and they usually just end up that way since experts in a certain type are drawn together. The different temple types have a wide variety of practices and expectations for their members, with the Ghost types being the most reclusive, usually. They’ve been experimenting with loosening things recently, as a sort of outreach to get Loanah’s people back in touch with it’s culture. The temple leaders all meet to discuss important issues. They don’t really have a centralized leader, but tend to have different aspects of life on the islands that they’re defacto in charge of. The Grass types are consulted for anything related to plants or agriculture for example, and the Ghost temple handles all matters related to death, hauntings, and funerals.

You get up to use the washroom. But you also decide to make a call to Valerie before going back.

“Hey, Herb. What’s up?”

You realize how long you’ve been talking and quickly end the call. You go sit down with Jane.

Now, how are you going to do this? She’s so paranoid sometimes. Maybe you need to change how you approach things with her. You just want everyone to get along. What if she doesn’t even want to come?

You stretch and walk away. You get about half a block before you realize you’re not sure where you intend to go.

The town gets pretty seedy the further in you go.

Nah. You’re just being paranoid. It’s dirty, sure, and things look a bit more rundown, but you know from Ugli fruits not to judge a book by it’s cover.

Then again, you got into fashion because that’s exactly what it’s all about. How you choose to present yourself says a lot. You fix your collar and tuck your hands in your pocket.

You pass by what looks like a flea market. Lots of knick knacks and various items being sold. You only glance at it as you go, but those prices sure can't’ be beat. You could use some cookware replacements or maybe some items for your pokemon.

A man in front of a building is soliciting customers. He yells out to you specifically as you walk by. “Gambling. Gambling! Hey kid! You a trainer? Try a new thrill, eh! Make some money!”

Jane balls her hand into a fist and brings it just shy of your gut before stopping herself. Her other hand is reaching around your neck to grab your shirt. You’re guessing to pull it over your head like a hockey player.

You stumble a bit. You weren't expecting that. You decide to just keep going with the hug since she’s seems to understand you’re not trying anything weird. You hug her. Her one arm over your shoulder awkwardly stays there and the other hangs for a second before giving you light series of pats on the back. “What are we doing?”

You’re not sure what she means. “It’s a hug.”

“I know that. But why?” She looks over your shoulder. “Is someone watching?”

You see people watching now, since it’s going on for too long to look normal. Nobody seems to care that much, though.

Your hand rests on her back for one more second. “It’s okay. It’s just a friendly hug. Honest.”

You break it and step back.

“Well. Alright then.” She pats down her clothes.

“See you tonight.”

“Right.” Her voice is all business now. She grabs her stuff and walks away.

You decide to do some shopping. You need to get a few things. You enter into the market and look around. There’s a lot of berries and other food for sale. You try some sort of veggie kebab. Huh, not bad. A little dry, and the cumin could be a little lighter, but it’s a creative mix you haven’t had before. You don’t think that cart was very clean, though.

But hey, you can rough it. This isn’t so scary.

Wow, there are a lot of unique looking people here. But where someone more timid would see scary characters laughing intimidatingly, you see two friends greeting each other.

“What are you looking at, kid?”

“N-nothing.” You move along.

You pick up some replacement pieces for your cookware. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just light and portable. You find it takes a little bit to get a good feel for how long something like a pot takes to warm up, even if it’s a specific material and volume. Each item always has a little uniqueness to it. But that’s the exciting part.

You see a few pokemon things on sale. Battle items, things like that. They’re discounted, but you get the feeling that they might be a little shoddy or have quirks. Maybe you’re just worrying too much, though. The sellers all insist that they’re top quality.

You stop by the old lady selling berries. Her prices aren’t as good, but you get a better feeling from her than the other person selling berries across the way. You pick up a big mixed bag of berries. She’s actually pretty sweet, once you say you’ll buy it at the price she quoted.

“You’re a good boy. You remind me of my grandson.” She spits. “Except he never visits. You, you must remember to visit your family even when you’re older, yes?”

“Of course!”

Lots of variety in here. It’s a good thing berries last such a long time before going bad. You figure you’ll have almost anything you need for any battles that come up, and even some extra treats once in awhile.

Then there’s the other thing. Some gross black sludge. Straight from the heart of Tabo, the vendor tells you. Bella reaches up at it and points as you inspect the glass container. Oddly enough, you think that you might be able to use this. Your mind races on if you can use it for a special recipe for her. You’ll need to do some research on that. You buy it and lift her onto your shoulders.

“Looking for a good time?” An older woman approaches. Well, older than you. She looks like a relatively young adult. Under 30, probably. Bella hisses.

“Bella, be nice. No thanks, ma’am.”

“Come on, sailor. Don’t be shy. I saw how much you put away. That’ll get you two hours.” She leans in uncomfortable close. “I can teach you a lot. Room included. Anything you’re shy about, I’ve seen it all. No judgements”

That cuts deep. You close your eyes, gather yourself up, and look her firm in the eye. “I appreciate it ma’am, but I’m not interested.”

You dip out and mumble an apology.

You keep going as quickly as you can without sticking out. You feel like you’re pressing your luck a little just by being here as the day goes on. It’ll start getting dark soon.

You stop as you hear the crying of a girl. You lean back and look down the alley.

“How will I get medicine for mama nowwwww?” She inhales between each word and cries at the end. She retrieves her knocked out pokemon. It looked like some sort of ice cream cone. How do you not know that one?

“Yeah huh. Real tragic.” You know that voice! You go a little closer and see Laki counting money. Her Meowth snuggles beside her. She looks up and sees you. “Aw crap.”

The girl is hard to see too clearly in the darkness of the alley, but you see her bright bows and girlish clothing. She looks between Laki and yourself, and runs to you and gives you a big hug.

“Do you know this meanie? She took my,” she sniffs, “medicine money!”

“Herb, don’t listen to her...” Laki warns. “I won it in a pokemon battle fair and square. And who bets their medicine money, huh?”

“I thought I could earn more so my mommy would be safe next week. Vallinish and I trained really hard, but we haven’t been eating well since daddy left.”

The little girl smiles. From this angle though, you can see that she’s older than you first thought.

Laki drops her, then makes a fist. “Scram. Now.”

She takes Laki’s advice. You’re tempted to take it too, given the look in her eyes. Belladonna yells something threatening as the girl runs.

“Come on, Soft hands. Let’s go back to the ship.”

It’s a bit of an awkward walk.

“You’re too trusting, Soft Hands. And even if she wasn’t a scammer, you can’t just go around cooking meals for everyone until their problems go away. You’re one person. You’ve got to realize you can’t solve everyone’s problems.” She looks over to you. “Ahhh. Forget it. She just put me in a bad mood. We’ll have some fun tonight.” She sighs. “Even if you invited Jane for some reason.”

Laki rolls her arm. “Nah. I’m not really feeling it. Plus I don’t want to be tired for tonight. I might need to murder Jane.” She jokes.

“Jane’s not so bad.”

“Really? You’re defending her already?” She sighs again, pushing away her anger. She mumbles something about it being alright.

“I think you two are alike, is all.”

You don’t like that look she’s giving you. Quick! Say something else! You tell her about the pirates you ran into and how it’s okay to trust people once in awhile.

“Now that’s just weird.” Laki says, coming down from her anger a little.

“Yeah. I didn’t see it coming. It’s been a strange day.” You touch her shoulder and stop her. “Hey Laki? I just want to say thanks for looking out for me. You’re like a big sis...you’re a really good friend.”

That seems like it just made it worse. She moves her lower jaw around a bit, then grabs you. “Come on. We’re going training.”

“I thought you weren’t in the mood.”

“I changed my mind.” She yanks your arm and takes you somewhere you can train.

And train you do. She really goes all out, doing pull ups on a tree branch, telling you to do the same, then situps, and pushups. You try not to stare too much when you notice how her pushups affect her chest.

All of your pokemon get in on it too. Yours are all a bit tired, but they’ve had enough time to recover to give it a good effort. Wailmer even practices in the small body of water you’re beside.

“Alright, Soft Hands. You’re going to learn how to throw a punch.”

“Oh...okay...” You don’t feel like she much cares about your consent in the matter.

“Hit me as hard as you can.” She smacks her abs, then flexes them. “Come on. Give it to me.”

Agreed. She's also shown some less than flattering sides of herself recently. Not that that's a bad thing, because I think it's helped keep her interesting, but that could also be a factor in why some people are drifting away from her as a romance option.

A funny thing that occurred to me during the Janebin was that if she trusted Herb a little more often, he'd have just as much reason to like her as he does for Laki, if not more so. It's weird, Laki was one of my top picks at the start of the quest, along with Keira, but the other three have grown on me way more over time, to the point that Laki and Keira are in my bottom two spots now. Just goes to show how good Gobble is at defying expectations and writing great girls.

She holds it and lets out more swears. “It’s fine. My fault.” She sounds so defeated. “I give up on today. I can’t even be angry anymore. Let’s just go back and I’ll get smashed and go to sleep. You guys do whatever you want without me.” She must have gotten more booze. “Yeah. That’s a good plan.”

She gives you a force smile, but still swears under her breath about her chest. She seems more amused than anything. Like her day has been a comedy and she's just a viewer. You know that feeling sometimes.
