You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and under orders from Head Captain Kyōraku you've taken four Lieutenants under your wing to train them for the battle coming in winter. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses which you've teased out by either fighting them or watching them fight: Miyako suffers from the fact that her zanpakuto is difficult to use and her reiatsu is unremarkable, while Momo doesn't take the initiative and her kenjutsu skills are lacking. Renji's still struggling with the self-control required to use kidō properly, and that same lack of control has kept his true Bankai beyond his reach. Last and least there's Kira, who could make something of himself if he weren't such a hot mess of insecurity and poor training practices.

“To learn kenjutsu without knowing pain leads to poor kenjutsu,” you mutter, tossing Wabisuke to the ground next to Kira where he's rolled to his knee. You feel your body lighten somewhat as the zanpakuto steams and straightens its form back into that of a proper katana. “Likewise trying to rely on an ability without truly knowing its effects leads to poor zanjutsu.”

“You all show some promise in your own strengths, but you have a lot of work ahead of you,” you address the four Lieutenants as a group. “Now, it's time for you to see what a Lieutenant can do when they've succeeded in combining all your respective strengths.”

With a smile, you welcome another newcomer to the training field, one whose presence at your side is always welcome and whose assistance you have long valued above damn near any other.

“Rangiku, it's finally time you showed your cohort what you can really do.”

“I'll do what I can,” your Lieutenant sighs, rubbing the base of her neck.

“Rough night?”

Rangiku nods grimly. “Yeah, woke up with a nasty crick in my neck.”

“How about now?” you ask, having stepped behind her in an instant and given her body a solid jerk. For a moment your patient tests the results by lifting and turning her chin.

“Good job,” she nods, “you managed to overcorrect. Now it's on the other side.”

“It's always something with you, isn't it?” you tease.

“I suppose I should just be grateful you didn't snap my neck.”

“Please,” you smirk before turning to explain to a puzzled and concerned Kira. “Make no mistake I am that prone to overdoing it, it's just her neck is tougher than that.”

“It had to be,” Rangiku counters airily. “Otherwise I might not've survived being raised by you. Seriously, what would you have done if you'd adopted a squishier kid?”

“Point is you're not squishy,” you sigh, “and I want you to help me make your fellow Lieutenants here less squishy.”

“I don't particularly appreciate being called squishy,” Renji grumbles. “We're Lieutenants for cryin' out loud, haven't we earned some respect?”

“And there's the attitude again,” you round on him. “Do you know the purpose of a Lieutenant, Renji? Don't answer that, it's rhetorical... the answer is that as a Lieutenant you're expected to take over for a Captain some day.”

“Take over for Captain Kuchiki?” Renji frowns, considering the point.

“That's right. The rank exists because the Gotei 13 relies on the power of its Captains in emergencies, and when a Captain dies or is forced to retire we have to replace them as quickly as possible. Having skilled Lieutenants allows us to recruit from a standing pool of candidates in that eventuality.”

“At one point we had a sizable pool to draw on including some seated officers, but the last hundred years have taken a toll. Right now we have one Lieutenant who's capable of handling that sort of responsibility and it sure as hell isn't you, Renji. I've been there, Hell would agree.”

“And who might that one be?” Renji snorts. “Certainly not Ikkaku?”

“Renji, think about that carefully,” Hinamori sighs. “Of course she means Rangiku.”

“I'd heard she knows Bankai, but I've never seen it... and are her other abilities really so far beyond ours?” Kira muses.

“I think four on one is as close to fair as this is going to get,” you shrug, making the suggestion to your daughter. “You game?”

“Make that five to one,” Yoruichi interrupts, having returned with Omaeda huffing and puffing dramatically behind her. “Surely one more won't be an issue?”

“The more the merrier,” Rangiku shrugs. “Renji, would you mind using shikai?”

“Why?” Renji demands loudly.

“It's easier for me to fight against all five of you without having to account for one of you who's way stronger,” Rangiku explains carefully. “You may think it's a point of pride, but this is still a training exercise, so it's pointless if nobody can learn anything from it.”

“I'd learn something from it,” you protest in jest, retrieving your haori from Miyako's hands.

“No, you'd be amused by it, Captain,” Rangiku rolls her eyes. “There's a difference.”

“Not to me there isn't.”

“I'll get straight to the point,” Rangiku offers, shrugging off her haori and tossing it to you revealing her bare shoulders and back.

“Hey wait a minute, Captain!” Omaeda protests loudly. “Why's she got the same uniform you do? Don't tell me she can...”

“Shunkō!” Rangiku declares, her body rippling with a pink-tinted aura of powerful, shimmering reiatsu. It's not like yours or Yoruichi's which cycle through your own body in a loop, nor is it like Little Bee's which rotates constantly. No, Rangiku's shunkō seems to vibrate not unlike...

“It's like Seele Schnieder!” Rosa confirms in wonder. “When did your girl pick this up?”

“It's lower frequency, and seems to take more out of her to maintain,” you observe carefully, “but yeah... I can see the comparison. It's her own unique completed form.”

“And I'm proud of it,” Rangiku admits. “So, who's first?”

“Smash, Gegetsuburi!” Omaeda roars, only to find Rangiku's fist thrust through the giant spiked flail that manifests in his hands. The sphere cracks and shatters, with the punch connecting with the new Lieutenant's sizable gut. He manages to take a step back to avoid getting the full impact, but his horror is obvious.

“It seems to soften reiatsu-hardened surfaces,” you observe, eyeing the relatively modest effects Rangiku's new form had on Omaeda's body compared to his weapon. “But she's not gonna let up.”

“Raise your head, Wabisuke!”

Kira gets a kick to the gut for his trouble as Rangiku intercepts his blade with Haineko, then immediately counterattacks. His eyes widen and he gasps for air as he rolls across the ground, and Rangiku takes a moment to reduce her own zanpakuto to ashes in an instant without calling on it. Just in the nick of time, as it happens.

“Snap, Tobiume!” Hinamori shouts, sending a burst of crimson reiatsu at her fellow Lieutenant only to watch it detonate early against a wall of ash, leaving an opening for her partner to attack with his own zanpakuto.

“Roar, Zabimaru!”

Renji's saw-like blade misses entirely as an almost imperceptible shunpō lets Rangiku step out of the way, while Miyako has prepared her own follow-up.

“Bakudō #30: Shitotsu Sansen!”

From the ground Kira finishes his own spell. “Hadō 57: Daichi Tenyō!”

As chunks of upturned stone, swords, and spears of light rain down on her, Rangiku's response is exactly what you'd expect it to be.

She smiles.

“Ōkasen!”

hahaha, Rangiku you're fucking awesome
>>

Haineko's ashes have gotten everywhere, it seems. The chunks of earth, seeded thoroughly before Kira could complete his incantation, shatter into harmless pebbles and dust and scatter on the blast waves. Zabimaru changes course and practically folds in on itself, its ligaments torn and frayed in places. The spears of light dissolve and Miyako herself is thrown backwards from the force of Rangiku's counterattack, and a web of kido hastily spread across the battlefield in secret by Hinamori has a hole burned through the center of it and loses integrity.

As the dust settles, one of the stunned Lieutenants manages a nervous laugh.

“Hey, you forgot about me!”

“Tsuzuri Raiden,” Rangiku adds, causing the ashes on Gegetsuburi's fragments to shock Omaeda's hands.

“Better now?” she asks.

“You didn't have to take it so literally...” he moans.

“So, that's my shikai,” Rangiku continues cheerfully. “You also got to see my shunpō and hakuda. Not really so much my zanjutsu and kenjutsu skills, but they're there.”

“Let's play together instead, Rangiku,” you suggest, drawing Tenkotsuki from your waist. “Just like old times?”

“You must be in a good mood,” Rangiku muses as her blade re-solidifies. “Alright, let's play. But don't be surprised if it's harder than you remember.”

“I'd be disappointed if it weren't.”

The first few blows are simple enough: a horizontal slash meets a flowing parry, an attempt at a shoulder slam is pushed away, a thrust is sidestepped. Then you start to formulate a plan: Rangiku is accustomed to your techniques, having seen many of them in the past as you were developing them. The best way to really test her ability is to try something new... but what? Something unusual, perhaps kidō... or a new version of one?

It's in the midst of that thinking that Rangiku suddenly manages to surprise you instead.

A circular step reduces the ground beneath you to soft, shifting sand and forces you to backpedal awkwardly to avoid tripping, and Rangiku's blade is at your neck.

“Point?” she smiles.

Clever girl.

“I was lost in thought,” you admit, “but yeah. You got me fair and square... good job.”

“I had no idea Rangiku was so good at kenjutsu,” Hinamori muses quietly to Renji. “She was actually holding her own against the Captain!”

“Well then, I suppose you have improved,” you muse. “And you studied with Kaoru too unless I'm mistaken.”

“You caught me!” she replies sheepishly. “I've been putting in extra practice lately, trying to find ways to hide Haineko's ashes better and catch people off guard.”

“Let's get back to basics,” you suggest, readying your sword again. “Kenjutsu against kenjutsu!”

Rangiku takes the initiative, flash-stepping behind you to attack your left shoulder with a downward slice. But you catch her just as easily, jabbing your sheath into her stomach while Tenkotsuki's blade stops her strike. You spin in place to strike back but your daughter has moved away, probably as soon as she realized that her attack had failed. It's a good instinct.

“You're taking this seriously,” she muses as you finish withdrawing Tenkotsuki's sheath from your sash. “I'm flattered.”

“You earned it,” you reply, lunging in with a thrust while the sheath protects your vulnerable left side from Rangiku's turning riposte. “You've improved a lot since I taught you shunkō... I'm proud.”

“Can't quite keep up though!” she admits, swinging Haineko at your right side to tie up Tenkotsuki and throwing a series of rapid punches at your left side that you parry in succession with the sheath. “You're always one step ahead!”

As if to prove the point she takes a crack across the jaw from the sheath that lets you disengage with Tenkotsuki, turn, and land a strike with her pommel that doubles Rangiku over and slides her across the ground several meters.

“Kamaitachi,” you announce, suggesting your next attack.

“Enkosen,” she replies, proposing her counter.

“Not enough,” you observe.

“I know,” she admits as her blade dissolves into ashes. “But with this it would be.”

“Then Rikujōkōrō,” you continue, and Rangiku's forced to nod. “Yeah, that'd about do it, wouldn't it?”

“Wait, are you still fighting or not?” Omaeda wonders aloud. “I'm confused.”

“They've got a good enough feel for each other's relative ability they can imagine the outcome,” Miyako explains with a frown. “I've never seen two fighters get like this with only shikai.”

“Any Captain could fight at this level, with varying degrees of success,” Yoruichi weighs in with her own analysis. “You Lieutenants could do it too if you were better rounded, more serious about your training.”

“The four shinigami combat arts are all part of a comprehensive system,” you explain without lowering your sword. “Kenjutsu, hakuda, a zanpakuto's own abilities, kidō... each meant to fill the holes left by the others, overlapping and empowering each other. When one fails the other can succeed, when one leaves you open the other defends you. While the specific skills and level of ability each shinigami attains vary, using all four is mandatory for someone of Lieutenant caliber or higher.”

“Your ability makes it easier though,” Rangiku points out, lowering Haineko's hilt.

“Only in terms of its shape,” you nod, “and in terms of making higher level spells easier to cast quickly without losing power. Tenkotsuki's greater power lies with what happens with spells I can already cast that way, which is beyond the point of the lesson.”

“So that's what you were trying to do?” Rangiku asks. “Improvise?”

“It normally takes months to devise a new kidō technique,” Hinamori frowns. “I've been working on spreading Fushibi under Kyokkō for three years now, under Captain Ichimaru's suggestion... and that's more like dual casting, not true kaizo kidō.”

“I'm interested in seeing it too,” Rangiku muses.

Well, you may be able to demonstrate one technique... one which won't claim an arm or a leg even if they do it right. It's not like they can heal themselves the way you can.

“Well then, this is Kurohitsugi Dantō,” you explain, raising your hand and aiming it at a nearby boulder. With some effort you call a pitch-black box of reiatsu into being around the surface of the boulder, then close your fist. The spell collapses a small chunk of the rock under a torrent of gravity, crushing what had once been about the size of a human head into what looks more like a marble.

You pick it up with your fingertips, then for good measure you toss it into the nearby pond where it raises a plume of water several meters high.

“You collapsed a part of the rock?” Hinamori asks, absolutely enthralled by what she's just watched. “Does that use less energy?”

“It's a bit faster too,” you tell her, which you think nearly causes her to squeal. “But it also takes substantially more effort and control to pull off... so I doubt most practitioners could manage it. But you might be able to do something similar with a lower-level spell, if you're as good with kidō as I suspect you are.”

“I can barely control Shakkahō and Captains are modifying eighties-level spells?” Renji mutters. “Damn it all.”

“Maybe I've been going about it the wrong way...” Kira muses to himself. You can't help but throw in your own opinion, startling the poor Lieutenant.

“What, by not using bakudō to make it easier to land multiple hits in quick succession?” you ask, and his eyes widen as if he thinks you read his mind.

“No, I can't read your mind...”

He sighs in relief.

“... but I still think you're better off learning how to properly estimate Wabisuke's effect on specific victims.”

“So it's just that easy?” Rangiku cocks her eyebrow. “Well then, I guess I should try it at some point.”

“Perhaps all of you could work on that sort of control,” you muse quietly, and together with Tenkotsuki you hatch a plan. For a few moments you and she puzzle out the details, before you decide you're ready. Drawing her blade and holding it edge-up at your side you begin.

“Shunkō.”

Your mind feels sharply focused, and Tenkotsuki's blade glows as if lit from within by a roaring flame as the reiatsu from your own aura pours into her. The world around you shimmers and your hair stands on end as the kidō builds a powerful charge, and once you're satisfied that the power is there you call out its name:

“Danmaku Tenyō!”

There's a bright flash and a tangible pulse of reiatsu from Tenkotsuki's blade, the corona rapidly coalescing in the air around you as many hundreds of points of multi-colored light like mad fireflies suspended in place. Rangiku's eyes widen at first in alarm as the projectiles weave and dance fantastic patterns through the air, then narrow as she realizes what you must have done.

“Curtain-Fire Translocation Dance,” Yoruichi mutters, the only one to have observed the whole spectacle through closed eyes and her sixth sense alone. “So Daichi Tenyō, except instead of lifting objects to fling around you've created the projectiles from your own reiatsu. When did you learn that?”

“I didn't. I made this up just now.”

“Impressive,” Rangiku comments, “as usual. It's just like you, offense and defense all wrapped up in one.”

“It's yours if you want it,” you offer. “For someone with Shunkō it's really remarkably simple.”

“I can probably figure it out on my own... Suí Fēng's gonna love this,” Yoruichi muses. “You mind if I teach it to her when she gets back?”

“Go for it,” you shrug. “It's not like I'm making an effort to keep it a secret. The rest of you, Daichi Tenyō is where we'll start working on practice.”

holy shit Renji's learning things
>>
“The next exercise will be to avoid the bullets,” you explain, splitting the projectiles floating in the air around you into smaller, less powerful masses. “Get hit three times and you fail. Use your own Daichi Tenyō to block... and if you can't manage that use whatever you can.”

“Starting... now!”

Much to your surprise it's actually Kira who gets hit first... three times in rapid succession. The first threw him off so badly that his focus wavered and never recovered. Three burns make it obvious he's failed, though the onslaught doesn't relent. By the time it's all over he's taken a further four burns.

Omaeda fails spectacularly as well, eventually giving up on Daichi Tenyō and resorting to shunpō which ceases to work as you swarm him to score hits three through thirteen. You do let up on him after he's down however, so nobody better call you merciless after this.

Renji does you proud, though it's after dodging a few that he gives up and starts to rely on a spell he can manage: Seki. Number eight on the list of numbered Bakudō, it's something some noble children can use about as soon as they can walk... but here it's effective enough, and his ability to summon and maintain the little barriers grows impressively over the course of the exercise. He only gets hit twice before you land a cheap shot right at the end, so you'll call that a pass as well.

Miyako does even better, getting hit once but managing to control her Daichi Tenyō with remarkable precision so long as she focuses on a slightly lower number of objects. Hinamori also does well, receiving two burns but controlling a larger number of objects. The two Lieutenants congratulate each other excitedly at the end... while you, Rangiku, and Yoruichi continue.

Your wife and daughter learned the same spell you're using, having used shunkō and countered your reiatsu bomblets with their own. For what feels like ages the brightly-colored projectiles clash and swirl, some expanding to capture smaller attacking projectiles while others move in fast, brightly-colored formations to try and guarantee at least one has a chance of making it through the defense. Explosions blossom like an orchard of cherry trees in spring, more numerous than you can count.

“I love it!” you proclaim with a broad smile, ending the all-out brawl of disco lights in a series of larger bursts that consume the other projectiles and clear the sky of them. “I could do that all afternoon!”

“I'm beat,” Rangiku sighs, though a smile tugs at her own lips. “My shunkō takes a lot more out of me than yours do, can I take a nap?”

“Go ahead,” you nod, “but be back up in time for dinner.”

“kay.”

“Now then,” you continue, turning towards your students. “Omaeda, you're Yoruichi's problem. The rest of you... well, three of you exceeded my expectations. One of you challenged them and not in a good way.”

I was thinking about Doggo's Shikai/Bankai. His shikai summons disembodied body parts from Tengen, right? It's kinda ironic that if you switched his Bankai and shikai abilities around, it would be much more useful.
>>

>>Renji, Kira, we're doing another drill. Miyako, please spar with Hinamori.

This >>1256128 kinda makes sense. Kira's shikai is kinda a slow starter in a way.

Also King, Riku didn't exactly mention that the participants only need to protect themselves, eh?

Or if he got better at shunpo or Bakudo so speed was less an issue for him.

“Miyako, please spar with Hinamori for a while,” you request of your sister-in-law-by-adoption. “You'd be a fine instructor while my attention is elsewhere.”

“I can do that, sure,” Miyako nods happily. “Come on, Momo. I'll teach you a few basic techniques... you use a pretty basic academy form, right?”

Meanwhile, you turn to face Renji and Kira. “Renji, you did surprisingly well with what you had at your disposal. Sometimes it's basic techniques polished to perfection that are the most useful.”

“Thanks for the compliment, I guess,” Renji sighs, rubbing one of his burns.

Then you stare Kira down, disapproval obvious in your eyes. “As for you... your technique was good and your control was solid... but you got distracted. It all fell apart from there.”

“Just like with your zanpakuto, it's like you don't know what it's like to actually have to do these things under stress, or even what the effects of your own techniques are.”

Kira hangs his head. “Maybe I shouldn't be a Lieutenant.”

Your head collides with his own almost before his own sentence is finished. “What the Hell are you getting so damned depressed about!?”

“I'm sorry!?”

“And quit apologizing!” you shout, butting heads with Kira again so hard it leaves a bruise... on him, at least. “Instead why don't you do something!? Your problem is you're so busy feeling sorry for yourself that you can't even take basic steps to sharpen your combat skills!”

“So we're gonna run that exercise again, just the three of us. And we're going to keep running it until you both pass to my satisfaction.”

...Those are all cero, you know.
Just one would probably fuck them up if it hit.
>>
>>1257201
He doesn't have to fire them off full power. And he could probably do the same with bala if he wanted to.
>>
>>1257220
In that case, apacci might be better suited.
She developed a technique in which you bounce bala off surfaces at angles, or at least she had been working on it a while ago.

If she does it rapid-fire, you'd have bala coming at you from all angles.
Would probably be best to do that in the underground training room, since she'd have four walls and a roof to bounce them off of, and it'd also reduce collateral.
>>
>>1257234
Starrk could get the same effect with more "bullets" by just sonido-ing around while firing.

But yeah, we probably shouldn't do this out in the open in case Renji or Kira goof and fuck something up.
>>
>>1257241
Only problem is, sonido and cero in resureccion are a lot more stressful than bala standing still in a resting state, and starrk is a lazy-ass.
>>
>>1257248
He's got plenty of power to use. It's not like he ever does anything with his huge guts. But it would probably be impossible to get him to actually do anything.

“See, you both have different problems,” you explain, still pelting the two Lieutenants with barrage after barrage of half-powered reiatsu blasts. “Renji, you have a good head for battle. Your instincts are reliable and you've got a good grasp of tactics and the flow of combat. But you lack technical refinement... you see a difficult kidō or a high-level zanjutsu technique and treat it like it's beyond your ability. You prefer success to failure even if it means you never advance.”

“And you, Kira, have the opposite problem,” you continue, focusing on making the reiatsu blasts dance infuriatingly around the Lieutenant. “Your technical ability is quite high, but you have no sense of how to use those techniques. You lack an aggressive drive, you lose focus easily, and get confused in battle when things don't go as planned. In your case it's not wasted potential, it's mismanagement of what you do have.”

Having long since given up on the three-hit rule you've singed both of your students quite badly a number of times, and their breathing has grown ragged: Kira more so than Renji, since his stamina seems to be a little less impressive. Probably something to do with the fact that Renji has Bankai, and was tougher to begin with.

“Don't slack off yet,” you tell them sternly. “I'm going to go file a report to the Head Captain, when I'm done with my work you can eat and rest.”

You leave the two Lieutenants to continue their own training, with Kira using Daichi Tenyō against Renji's improvised defenses. Settling down upstairs in your office, you call Tenri over to you.

“Please see to it I'm not disturbed,” you request politely, and Tenri bows deeply.

“Of course, ma'am.”

Dialing up Shunsui's office, you wait for him to pick up. “Yes? I take it this is a report?”

“You'd be right” you sigh. “You want the good news first or the bad?”

“Let's get the bad news out of the way and end on a positive note.”

“The bad news is that none of them are good at everything,” you explain. “Renji's kidō is tragic, Kira's a hot mess, Hinamori's practically too afraid of her own sword to cut anything with it, and Miyako's raw power is a step behind the curve set by the others.”

“And the good news?”

“The good news is that Renji's a good fighter, Kira's technical abilities are respectable, Hinamori's excellent at kidō even by Captain standards, and Miyako would give Rangiku a run for her money were it not for the difference in their reiatsu.”

“And do you have an estimate for how ready they'll be by winter?” Shunsui asks.

You sigh, not really happy with the answer you have to give him. “That depends entirely on them.”

There's a moment of silence. “Well, I can't say it's going any better or worse on my end. I guess it really depends more on how our Captains develop in that time.”

“I'm not too worried,” you admit. “But every bit counts.”

This call is essentially over already, though you take a few minutes to end on a polite note rather than simply insisting that your duty has been seen to. Next you turn your attention to the arrancar you've left in their released states all afternoon, their reiatsu familiar and powerful.

“So how are we feeling?”

“Not much different,” Apacci admits. “Though I have to admit that it's been harder to get used to this than I thought.”

“She broke three coffee mugs,” Halibel informs you, having donned a shihakusho over her skimpy bone-based attire that features heavily whenever she releases. “Along with one bent spoon, two damaged plates, a shattered glass...”

“I think she gets the picture, Lady Halibel,” Apacci groans.

“It's a learning curve,” you shrug. “It's understandable that you'd have some trouble at first until it becomes more normal.”

“Good to hear you say that,” Apacci grins nervously. “One of the mugs was yours.”

“You little piece of...” you grumble before catching yourself. “Well, you just have to replace it then. And stop using my stuff until you get things figured out.”

“Might be wise,” Halibel agrees.

“So other than that, how are you doing?”

“Tired,” Halibel shrugs.

“It's hard to see any progress,” Apacci shrugs as well.

“Then let's go get something to eat,” you suggest. “Even the Lieutenants are ready for a break.”

“I think we can spare the time,” Halibel nods, turning to lead the way to the mess hall.

>And since I passed out briefly just in the time it took to write this, I think it might be a mistake to try and continue.

Questions:
>Lieutenant's reactions to suddenly playing EXTREME DANMAKU dodgeball?
Apacci and Tia:
>So what's are the changes in daily routine being in 24/7 full release? "is it like living in a world of cardboard"?
>Apacci: which mug did you break? the Tea mug or the coffee mug?
Riku, Rosa, and Tenkotsuki:
>your thoughts on creating Danmaku Tenyō and it's use in terms of difficulty in casting, tactical use, pros/cons, and versatility in spell modification
>What kido level would you rate Danmaku Tenyō in and in what category?
>What's the full spell incantation for Danmaku Tenyō?
>is it possible to make different bullet patterns?

Omake ideas:
>Seireitei has a hidden association: The Shinigami's Zampakuto association where zampakuto spirits manifest and gather in the dead of night at a secret place (courtesy of Yoruichi's zampakuto Shōsōtō) to have a meeting discussing the state of things and generally complain about the glaring flaws/incompetence of their wielders.
>THE HUNT FOR THE JAGERWOLF HOLLOW: A look at Aizen's many attempts to hunt and capture the wolf menos he deemed suitable to replace the loose cannon Grimmjow jaegerjaquez... hopefully the power and potential the wolf menos possesses is worth the trouble...
which leads into the next omake idea
>FLIGHT OF THE WOLF WOMAN ARRANCAR: The capture of the wolf menos, the arrancarization of the wolf menos, and the carnage the wolf arrancar wrought on her way out. Turns out the wolf arrancar was an even looser cannon. "Mistakes were made" quoted Aizen, making a rare gesture to nurse a phantom headache unseen by anyone.

make that SSQ Rangiku confessing to Canon gin and we're good for the moment of this continuity...unless we're pushing for Adopted daughteru dating adopted son in a weird twist of incest by adoption which is relatively tame compared to the scandalous rumor of Yoruichi being a lesbian and married to Riku of all people in the noble circle.

>Kira: THE FUCK IS THIS!? THE FUCK WAS THAT!? THE FUCK ARE YOU!?
>Momo: Huh, this is actually kinda fun. Except when it hurts.
>Miyako: This would be fun if it weren't so glaringly obvious I was behind the curve.
>Omaeda: WHY DO THESE THINGS KEEP HAPPENING TO ME MAMAN!?
Tia:
>Very much so, though to me the world has always seemed somewhat fragile anyway.
Apacci:
>Coffee, please. I wouldn't touch the good teacups, what, do I LOOK like an idiot? Don't answer that...
Tenkotsuki:
>Danmaku Tenyō as a modified spell is not very powerful, but may be dangerous in terms of its versatility. It can serve as ablative defense as well as flow around most of the common barrier techniques such as Danku and Enkosen. It remains hadō, and is probably along the lines of a 60's or 70's series spell in terms of its performance. There is no incantation for kaizo kidō, as the changes are solely testament to the skill of the caster.
Riku:
>Well, duh.

1231: the entire archipelago that would eventually be known as Japan is in the midst of the most severe famine it's ever experienced. The sun is shrouded often by rainclouds even in the middle of summer, plants rot in the vast mud wallows that were once fields, and thousands starve each day. Some even claim that the disaster is the result of Amaterasu having been frightened off a second time, perhaps offended by some mortal misdeed.

The nobles complain about the dreary weather while the priests and undertakers labor tirelessly to count the dead and dying.

It is in this climate that the akuma beset the city of Kyoto.

They came from the temple of Enryaku-ji, on the slopes of the great mountain Hiei-zan, led by influential and highly-skilled sōhei warrior-monks and the mercenaries whose service their monastic wealth helped to retain. These monks of the 'mountain order' battled ceaselessly against their rivals at Mii-dera, the 'temple order' based at the foot of Hiei-zan, and times being lean turned their attention to the city in hopes of securing the food required to feed their men.

Of course in such times nothing comes without cost to someone else, and the people of Kyoto paid dearly so that the akuma could eat.

One day, in a small village outside of Kyoto, the sōhei of one of Enryaku-ji's many subordinate temples decided they wanted some yams... and one resident tried to take a stand.

“This is... all we have...” she pleaded weakly, sheltering the last few pathetic-looking yams beneath her emaciated body. “We'll die...”

“Then you'll die!” a sōhei barked, kicking the girl in her ribs with one armored sandal. She grunted in surprise, but didn't scream... she just curled up on the ground and continued trying to do the best she could to cover the yams. “But we'll all get to eat... no sense in letting us all die. So just give them up already! Be reasonable!”

“How is it... unreasonable...” the pale-haired girl muttered into the mud, “to want to live?”

Instead of answering the question the monk gave the girl a much harder kick, audibly cracking her ribs. This time she did let out a brief scream, which she managed to stifle on her own. Then a foot weighed heavily on her temple, pressing the side of her head into the muck.

“These things are barely edible anyway,” a nearby mercenary scowled, picking up the sad excuse for a pile of yams. “But we'll take them unless anyone else has anything to say about it?”

“Thanks for the meal,” the sōhei sneers, pushing the girl's head into the mud one last time for emphasis.
>1/?
>>
>>1264010
The girl nursed her wounds in a sodden lean-to, beside a flooded field full of rot. Two stones set in the middle of the sea of mud were the only discernible features.

“Are those your parents?” a voice greeted her.

She nodded silently, too weak with hunger to even speak. She knew that she had nothing left but the straw mats that covered over her sleeping spot... the only modestly dry spot in sight.

“I'm a quincy,” Bambietta introduced herself, crouching next to the girl. “But then again with your latent power I suspect you know that much already. I've been sent to recruit others like us... you have nothing to eat, do you?”

The girl shook her head sadly.

“If you don't eat, you'll die.”

The girl blinked away fresh tears and smiled.

“... when?”

With a sigh, Bambietta set a small glass vial next to the starving girl. “This is the blood of our King. It gives our kind power in exchange for loyalty: I was sent to recruit those who could use such power and were desperate enough to take a risk to do so. I won't lie, it's not always pleasant.”

“But I have to think it's better than this.”

Bambietta stood, leaving the vial where she set it. “This is a choice you have to make for yourself. Meet me at the top of Hiei-zan with your reply. If you do take the blood rest assured, you'll be easily capable of getting there.”

Then she disappeared, using hirenkyaku to keep herself up out of the mud so that her white uniform was hardly soiled. Such ability, such pride... the girl still had enough energy to be awed by the Sternritter's presence. She then considered the people in her village, who her parents once protected and who merely watched in cowardice as she was beaten and abused at the hands of the same men who stole their food. The leeches who lived off the livelihood of those they believed their lessers.

That made the decision for what to do next a simple one.
>2/3
>>
>>1264090
A howl went up on the chill air that night, a battle-cry which slowly gave way to screams of horror. The girl, now possessed of a strength great enough to sate her own hunger, showed no more mercy than the sōhei had earlier that day. She killed without remorse, “the weak feed the strong” she told them.

“What the hell are you, monster!?” a familiar warrior-monk challenged her, sword shaking in his trembling hand. “And why take the shape of a little girl?”

The girl stepped over the legs of a fallen monk, just the legs cut off just above the man's knees. “What do you mean, taking the shape? This is my shape. I'm the little yam-girl from the village, remember?”

“I'd remember something that could do what you've done here, monster!” the sōhei shouts wildly.

“I just wanted my yams back,” she told him calmly, “and your man on guard refused to give them to me. Said he had eaten them, so there was only one way to get them back.”

“You're insane!” he roared, charging with his sword raised high. In response the girl's mouth distended, a grotesque mockery of human anatomy that lashed out in a wave of fangs and flesh. The monk was mauled in an instant, his armor rent and his flesh shredded from his shattered bones as the starved girl concluded her feast... the first substantial meal she'd had in weeks.

Her maw, having achieved its purpose, reasserted its usual shape and reformed her face. She was then obliged to cover her mouth to disguise a belch.

She glanced down at the sword the monk dropped, then picked it up and thrust its point into the ground.

“Thanks for the meal.”

Having reclaimed her precious yams from the thieving akuma who had taken them from her, Liltotto Lamperd turned to join the Sternritter woman responsible for giving her this power.

“You made it,” Bambietta greeted her new comrade as she appeared at the peak of the sacred mountain. “I take it you concluded any business you still had here?”

“Of course,” Liltotto nodded with a calm smile. “So what shall we do next?”

Bambietta rose from the stone on which she had been sitting in wait. “For now we wait, and gather more recruits. Are you ready to see your new home?”

“I have no home here,” the girl told her comrade. “The sooner we leave this miserable place the better... I just hope it's quiet wherever we're going.”

"A girl of simple pleasures," Bambietta nodded happily. "I think we'll get along just fine."

- SHINIGAMI SAVANT: A GIN BETWEEN WORLDS -

“Ah... my achin' head...” Gin mumbles, rolling out of bed and thumping to the floor. “Damn that Tōsen, beggin' me to drink with him like that. Doesn't he know you just can't turn a guy down when he begs?”

He takes a moment to look around himself at the strangely familiar walls and furnishings... oh no. Oh how the hell did this happen? Not good, this is seriously not good...

“Ah, Captain!” a voice greets him from the other side of the door. “Are you alright? I heard something that sounded like a body hitting the floor.”

Wait, is that... “Miss Hinamori?”

“Of course, Captain, who else would it be?” the young Lieutenant replies. “Were you expecting someone else?”

Actually, he was expecting Kira to be the one to respond if this really is his Division headquarters, not Hinamori. That difference could be explained by unexpected shuffling of personnel, but the downright chipper tone in her voice? And calling him “Captain” what's more? That cant be explained by anything Gin could imagine, she should be trying to kill him... or at least report his presence to the Gotei 13.

“May I come in?” she asks nervously.

“Sure... I guess?” Gin replies, also uncertain as to just what the hell is going on.

The door opens, and Lieutenant Hinamori steps in with two cups in her hands. She smiles when she sees Ichimaru sitting at the little table in his own quarters, having reoriented himself. “I thought you might have been hung over. Here, I made you something.”

Ichimaru finds himself much more readily accepting of the coffee than the entire rest of the scenario, but despite his hangover notices the badge at Hinamori's waist: the number Three and the marigold. Though she's wearing it in a different place than he remembers, it's definitely his own Division's insignia. Just what the hell is going on?

“Thank you kindly, Lieutenant Hinamori,” Gin tells her, hiding his misgivings behind a sly smile... as he always does. “You're a real lifesaver, I thought I was done for!”

“Don't mention it, Captain Ichimaru,” she replies, sipping at her own cup. “But please, promise me you'll be ready for the Captains' Council meeting? Don't tell me you forgot?”

“How could I?” Ichimaru lies. “Days like this are the reason I drink in the first place.”

Hinamori raises a skeptical eyebrow, all but calling Gin a liar to his face. She acts like she's his Lieutenant and has been for fifty years, as if he never betrayed the Soul Society alongside Aizen.

>what's the highest number of men you've out-fucked before tiring out in one session?
>have you ever created a dildo out of reishi and have it vibrate at a rate of 2.4 million cpm (cycles per minute) just to get your rocks off? If not, are thinking of trying it out now in easing your boredom?
>how big of a dick is too thick for you to take? do you have a preferred dick size? Please give the answer in inches. I mean, bigger is better in bed but a woman does have a preferred size to fit while hitting that special spot inside.
I feel super horrible for being this autistic and horrible in making Queen answering the above questions IN CHARACTER as Candice of all things.
Liltotto:
>do you always keep a snack at hand?
>do your powers affect your daily appetite?
>If given the option, would you keep your current power or would you trade it away for something else? it's one thing that the trauma of nearly starving to death is understandable, but having your powers manifest in the form of turning your insides into a demonic lamprey and flipping your body inside out through your mouth in order to use it? isn't that inconvenient and unnerving?

To Gin's great relief, Hinamori doesn't try to press him for any additional information... because quite honestly, he doesn't have anything else to offer. Instead she allows him to take a few minutes to straighten up and put on his haori, then follows him to the First Division's barracks. Inside the meeting hall he's in for a shock.

Instead of an empty hall where Captains are expected to stand there's a long table in the middle of the room, with cushions all along its length: twenty-six in total, enough for the thirteen Captains with one set slightly back for their respective Lieutenants. Even more shocking is who's sitting around that table, starting with Captain Kyōraku taking the place of Head Captain with Ise Nanao sitting where old Sasakibe should be. Second Division's also represented by a strange face in Captain Shihōin Yoruichi, who was banished a hundred years ago, and Lieutenant Omaeda taking up quite a large space behind her. Gin takes his own seat with Hinamori opposite Yoruichi, with Lieutenant Hisagi sitting to his right wearing the badge of Fifth Division: none of whom seem at all shocked to see him.

In fact, Yoruichi seems rather cordial this morning. “So you know when Captain Kusajshi's going to turn up?”

Gin pretends that he's not confused about how little Yachiru must have managed to kill that brute Kenpachi, and keeps an impassive face. “You know her... she'll be along in her own time.”

“You're telling me,” Yoruichi grumbles.

“I am certain she is dealing with something suitably... important,” Captain Unohana replies, in her familiar position with Lieutenant Kotetsu sitting behind her. Strange, did she change her hair?

Next to Unohana is Lieutenant Abarai, whose Captain seems to be absent, and next to him sit... Urahara Kisuke and Kurotsuchi Nemu? This has to be a dream, that can't possibly be right. Then another Captain absent for Tenth Division, who's being represented by Kira? The blonde Lieutenant clearly notices Ichimaru's presence, but offers no real reaction to it beyond an all-too-genuine polite nod. Twelfth Division's represented by Tetsuzaemon? That's different, and it also means that Captain Kurotsuchi can't be serving in that Division... it's probably Komamura, for some reason.

To Shuhei's right sits a total stranger, a woman with dark hair, a noble bearing, but a calm smile... if Ichimaru had to hazard a guess he'd pin her as a Shiba, but there is no such candidate for the Captaincy and hasn't been for at least a hundred years. Then there's a gap for Ninth Division, another gap for Eleventh, and finally a familiar face.

But isn't Shiba Miyako supposed to be dead? And where is Captain Ukitake at a time like this? It's increasingly a struggle for Gin to hide his shock at the whole situation.

And then she arrives.

“Ah, Captain Kusajishi!” Kyōraku greets the newcomer warmly. “Now we can get started, so if you'll kindly take your seat?”

Ichimaru almost needs to take a moment to pick his jaw up off the floor. Since when the hell did that little murderous ball of bubblegum grow up to be such a looker? And is it weird for him to even be thinking that way? What the hell is going on here!?

First of all she's too damn tall to be the same person, and her hair is dark rather than gaudy pink. In fact where the Kusajishi Gin knows is cute in a thoroughly ridiculous yet endearing sort of way this woman is what Gin would have to call well-crafted in the way only a senior Captain ever is. Her fine uniform and its blue sash present just the right appearance, her bearing is at once commanding and relaxed... even her floral silver hairpin and her perfume work together to create a carefully-calculated image, like a Captain-themed piece of artwork given the breath of life.

“What's wrong Gin?” she teases, having noticed Gin's eyes lingering just a little too long. “You're looking at me like you've never seen me before.”

… this woman is entirely too observant, even if she doesn't realize how right she is. Behind her Rangiku cocks a quizzical eyebrow, the emblem of the Ninth Division displayed prominently at her hip.

They both take their respective seats, this new Captain being the only one sitting in formal seiza. Once this happens, Head Captain Kyōraku begins.

“So, Ichibē informed me that training is going well enough,” he says, scratching his head lightly. “We should get our Captains back with a week or two to spare before Aizen makes his move.”

“If he'd stop having the Royal Special Task Force waste time they'd get more done,” Yoruichi frowns. “I mean I get that they're doing their job as they see it, but after a while don't you get sick of it too?”

Wait, the Royal Guard are involved? Since when is that even a thing?

“Personally I agree,” Shunsui smiles lamely, rubbing the back of his head again. “But we can't exactly tell them not to. I'm just the Head Captain of the Gotei 13, right?”

“Point taken,” Yoruichi admits defeat, leaning back away from the table.

“And how is training of the Lieutenants progressing?” Shunsui continues. “ I see a few tired faces in the room.”

“Fine,” the newcomer Kusajishi shrugs. “I've highlighted some areas for improvement to work on. Whether or not they attain their full potential is largely up to how seriously they take this.”

“The Central 46 won't like hearin' that, but I understand where you're coming from,” the Head Captain muses.

“They're definitely not going to like what I'm about to ask either,” she continues, shutting her eyes with a little sigh. “Halibel thinks it's a good idea to send one of their cohort to each of these meetings, and I have to agree.”

Whoa, wait a minute. Wait just one damn minute, Halibel? Since when does the Gotei 13 even know Tia Halibel exists, forget being in a position to even contemplate her sitting in on the Captains' council meetings? A new Captain, sure. Positions being shuffled around, fine. Exonerating Urahara Kisuke and reinstating him as a Captain? Gin might have been able to see that.

“You okay, Ichimaru?” Shunsui asks, and in a split second Gin's face is a mask once more.

“I'm afraid I have something of a hangover if I'm honest,” he lies, “and the coffee my Lieutenant kindly made for me has only helped so much.”

“Well, that explains it,” the strange Captain nods, seemingly satisfied. “And it'd probably be Starrk doing the meetings, the man needs to start pulling his weight with the boring stuff.”

BULLSHIT!

“Stomach,” Gin groans as Unohana briefly catches his expression.

The hits keep coming through the entire meeting as a story of recent events unravels over the next hour or so: two more Captain-class vizards? Two Captains out of commission? Problems with the Soul Society expanding out of control and Hell literally breaking loose? What parallel universe is this!?

Eventually the meeting ends, and with a jovial slap across Gin's back Kusajishi excuses herself to 'knock some Lieutenant skulls together' as she said it. Yoruichi in particular seemed interested in watching... to Gin's mind there's no doubt that there's something going on there, what with the way the two Captains look at each other, the tone of their voices, their body language. Funny, he didn't realize that the former... well, somehow now the current... Head of the Shihōin Clan swung that way.

That leaves one Lieutenant staring at him rather crossly. “You went out drinking and didn't invite me?”

“Sorry, Rangiku, it was kind of a short notice sort of thing,” Gin admits in the first honest statement he's made all day so far.

“Well, you're gonna make up for it... first round's gonna be on you."

“You know drinking this much isn't good for you,” Gin tells Rangiku quietly, after most of the patrons of the bar have long since left.

Rangiku scoffs at the notion, her face blushing heavily. “If a Lieutenant feels like drinking, who's to tell her no?”

“A Captain for one,” Gin frowns.

“We both know you won't order me to stop having fun.”

Gin shakes his head. “This doesn't look like fun to me.”

“How perceptive!” Rangiku smiles, poking Gin in the tip of the nose. “There's this guy I like, and I've been worried about how I'm gonna ask him about how he feels.”

“If it's Lieutenant Hisagi, I don't think you have to worry,” Gin shrugs, evading the obvious point to the conversation. But Rangiku's not about to let him get away with it. Not this time.

“It's not Hisagi. No... this is a guy I knew growing up. We were thick as thieves on the streets, and when we were adopted together we were raised like siblings. He was always there for me... for a long time he was the only one who was.”

“So you're worried about how this guy thinks of you?” Gin muses. “Like a 'sister' or like a lover... I see.”

“Here's the thing,” Rangiku sighs wistfully, “he's kind of an ass sometimes. I feel like he's been pushing me away this whole time... I know he cares, but he keeps avoiding the subject. So I really just don't know why he keeps doing it, either... just that he does.”

“Maybe he's afraid of getting too close,” Gin shrugs, taking a tentative sip at his third cup of sake. “Maybe he doesn't want to cause problems for the people he cares about. Maybe he's just a coward.”

“Maybe,” Rangiku shrugs. “Loving a guy like that... it sure would be a problem.”

“You think you could do it?”

Rangiku closes her eyes, leaning against her oldest friend. “Maybe some day. When he decides to be honest with me, and more importantly with himself.”

"He's a lucky guy," Gin nods sagely.

"Damn right."

That was weird. Aaroniero Arraruerie stares down at Ichimaru as he staggers to his feet.

“What did you dream, Ichimaru Gin?” he asks in a booming voice, before the tone shifts abruptly. “Was it a good one? Was it pleasant?

“It was like the Soul Society, but everythin' was different,” Gin mutters, recalling his time under the influence of Guttoneria's stolen power. Some sort of dream manipulation technique that, being composed of so many souls and personalities and thus never having had 'normal' dreams, Aaroniero couldn't even begin to understand for himself without a volunteer. “Like some kinda bizarre parallel universe. Some of it was nice though... specially right at the end.”

“Perhaps this was a waste of time,” Aaroniero mutters, his deeper voice having returned as he turns to leave. “Apologies for wasting your time.

Gin stands alone for a moment, deep in thought. “Perhaps not completely wasted...”

“What are you doing here, Ichimaru?” Yoruichi demands the next morning, a few hours after sunrise.

Gin heaves a dramatic sigh. “An here I went to all the trouble to make a peace offerin'... seriously, why so hostile?”

“You're a traitor to the Seireitei,” Yoruichi growls, crossing her arms over her bathrobe, “and you turn up on the doorstep... while Kisuke's away... with a gift basket full of fruit and chocolates. This makes NO. DAMN. SENSE!”

“It's gotta be some kind of trick!” she shouts, chucking the gift basket and causing Gin to duck to avoid it.

“No tricks, just treats!” Gin insists, raising his hands in his own defense. “Which are now on the ground... I just had a question I thoughtcha might be able to answer, doesn't even have to do with any of this!”

“Well, spit it out and get going,” Yoruich grumbles, still glaring daggers at the traitor Captain.

“Does the name Kusajishi Riku ring any bells?”

Yoruichi shakes her head with the bare minimum movement required. “Nope.”

“How about Rosa, then?”

Yoruichi's face remains impassive, but her voice betrays her surprise. “Where did you hear that name?”
>6/?
>>
>>1271423
“Let's just say I heard it in a dream,” Gin shrugs. “But you did recognize it?”

Yoruichi frowns for a moment, then gestures into the Urahara shop. “Come in and sit down... and don't tell anyone that we had this conversation.”

“Believe me,” Gin shakes his head dismissively, “that's the last thing I'd want to do.”

The two former Captains take seats opposite each other across the low kotatsu, one's faced masked behind a perpetual smile and the other's deep in thought. “Rosa Rosette was the name of a quincy I fought, in the last battle between the Gotei 13 and that tribe.”

“So she did exist?” Gin asks, disguising his surprise. “What happened between the two of you?”

“You ever wonder why I have no zanpakuto?” Yoruichi asks, her left hand resting against her thigh as if longing for something which used to rest there. “She happened to it. Slashed my sword up with those vibrating saw-blades they used to use, then resorted to Letzt Stil. She basically stole the reishi that made up my Bankai, then when her own power faded mine went with it.”

“She traded her spiritual power for yours,” Gin realizes with an uncharacteristic frown. “I have to admit I'm impressed, I thought the quincy were supposed to be too proud for that sort of thing.”

“So was I,” Yoruichi admits with a sigh. “Bought time to save her whole platoon too. In fact I was so impressed I spared her life... I was beaten by her sacrifice play. It seemed only right.”

“Well then, I guess that settles it,” Gin nods, rising to his feet. “I'll be on my way then, wouldn't want to impose on your hospitality any further.”

“Ichimaru... what the hell are you up to?” Yoruichi mutters. “I just don't understand it.”

MEANWHILE...

Ichimaru Gin awakes with a start.

“What did you dream, Ichimaru Gin?” Miyako Shiba asks, offering a hand to help the Captain back to his feet. “Was it a good one?”

“Not particularly,” he shakes his head with a smile. “But thanks for helpin' me confirm it.”

“Of course, Captain,” the Lieutenant replies, sheathing her zanpakuto. “Anything I can do to help put your mind at ease.”

“Who knew runnin' off with Aizen like that coulda ended so badly? Feels like I dodged a bullet there...”

Question
Yoruichi:
>Have you tried double releasing? Or are they incompatible for synergy?
>>
>>1271556
Yoruichi:
>Well, Shōsōtō is a little like using Kamishini no Yari. It stays active when I'm not creating something, but it's smarter not to use Bankai until I have a clear idea what I need. So I usually hold off using Bankai and Resurrección at the same time to keep my full reiatsu a surprise until I have a plan.
>>
>>1271697

Yoruichi: What's the most powerful weapon you have copied?
Riku: What are your plans for when you finally get nine tails and become a goddess?
Gin: What it would take you to go on a date with Rangiku?
Rangiku: What haven't you tried yet to make Gin confess?
>>
>>1271697
To Yoruichi/Riku:
>Did you ever have The Talk with gin and rangiku? Is that why they never figured out how to be in a relationship with eachother? Is this what happens when billy has two moms?
>>
>>1271697
Will Riku ever reach a point where she will have a kitsune tail even when not in bankai?
>>
Somewhat off-topic, but did we ever find out if having two zanpakuto gave us two bankai? I can't remember
>>
>>1271993

I don't think we ever did Roza Bankai?
>>
>>1271893
that'd be neat.

>>1272014
She doesn't have a bankai, she's got a resureccion and MAYBE a segunda etapa.

>>1271469
OOC, about how much raw fighting power does riku have compared to yamamoto, kyoraku and tia individually when she's at full power, in percentage?

Say 20%, 60%, 80%, more, less?
>>
>>1271697
Is Riku still stuck at 7 tails for bankai? I swear we should have 8 tails at this point. I mean, we did pass up on the opportunity to keep the Oin and opted to destroy the box after we had a small taste of being full peak black-furred nine tails of full shinto god, but I remember Riku getting a share of shinreiryoku from the pipe, the knife, the masu box, and siphoning a fair portion of the Oin's power upon its destruction. Does Riku need time to digest the new foreign sources of shinreiryoku like Tia and Yoruichi?
Will there be more opportunities to safely bump our power to 9 tails aside from opportunities made from desperate choices? we still have Kukkaku's severed arm that has the Oken key inside it, but even that won't be enough to bump Riku's power up to her max potential without breaking even more eggs.
>>
>>1271724
Yoruichi:
>I haven't had occasion to use it yet, and I'd like to keep it a surprise for Riku. You know how it is.
Riku:
>Ever heard of a "working retirement"?
Gin:
>A spine, probably.
Rangiku:
>Threats of violence... you think that'd work? Nah, couldn't.

>>1271755
Riku:
>Well, yeah. But they've gotta figure this stuff out on their own, you know?

>>1271893
Eventually, it's possible.

>>1271993
Rosa's release is more like an arrancar's sword, and the arrancar haven't yet figured out how to Segunda Etapa. And it's not clear IC how much like an arrancar's release Rosa's is, whether the same sort of training would even produce similar results.

>>1272263
It really is hard to say, their abilities all interact in vastly different ways. But right now thanks to her deeply unfair Bankai Riku would probably be the only one of the three who could fight Yamamoto on equal terms. Likewise, at this point Yoruichi could fairly convincingly beat Riku unless the latter got in a decisive first hit.

>>1272779
Partly the difficulty is that you're currently trying to shortcut a process that should take hundreds of years of slow maturation. The other part is that it's her sister's arm for crying out loud, and she's not Liltotto: eating people's reiryoku is weird and disturbing, and it's a part of someone she cares about.

Getting a bit hung up on how deeply wrong it feels is part of what separates Riku from the villains.

As my Twitter suggests no internet this weekend, and spotty cell coverage. So don't be surprised if I go silent for a while.
>>
>>1273407
Is there any way for us to dictate what comes next in power-bolstering activities? For instance, if it were up to me, I'd be prioritizing the sanity cure for the Femritters, since they probably need some time to reassess their situation after that to decide if they want to help or bail. Or an extended sword trance session to commune with tenko and rearrange the inner world to help digest the shinreiryoku. Or try stabbing the bankai machine with rosa or a arrancar's zanpakuto, or getting Urahara to come up with a version that works with hollow zanpakuto.
>>
>>1273671
You'll get a chance, I'll be considering such things while at the edge of the map.
>>
>>1273407
To Riku/Yoruichi: It's not considered weird at all that your adopted son and daughter are probably going to fug and have children someday?
I mean, i know they (clearly) aren't related by blood, but they still grew up together, treating eachother like brother and sister, calling eachother such.
And even if they were, i know sometimes there's inbreeding to keep noble bloodlines "pure" or whatever, so maybe it's not. And of course, as their mother, you've always known how they really feel about eachother ever since they were kids, so it's not like it's a shocking revaluation or anything, but to an outsider that knows little else about them? All they'd probably hear is that a brother and sister are doin' it. Are you not worried at all about what people might think or having to clear up any misunderstandings?

>To-Do List

>Learn Hado #99 to counter Aizen's
>Assist Arrancar in achieving Segunda Etapa
>Turn three lieutenants into captain-class fighters
>Get Kisuke samples of regenerative hollows so he can complete his own hollow serum to heal the femritters and Ukitake

>Maybe List

>Learn Tenkotsuki's kaizo barrier technique
>Achieve Segunda Etapa with Rosa
>Improve our ability to handle the explosive bankai technique

We got a lot to do and never enough time to do it.
I would highly suggest prioritizing the arrancar's segunda etapa and kisuke's hollow serum, followed by hado #99.
That will give us by far the most available battle-power in the upcoming war.
>>
>>1275973
A thought, once the lieutenants are strong enough, we can take them hollow-hunting with us in hueco mundo as part of their training.
It'll be difficult to bring back living hollows with high speed regeneration for kisuke without high-level bakudo, so it might be good training for them.
>>
>>1275973
we also need to get Rukia and Tatsuki up to speed, because we know thery're following Ichigo straight to hell. And there's continuing to look into the weird shit with overlapping planes, probably ought to keep the Ishidas updated on the Quincy situation, deal with Central 46, and any other bullshit that comes up. Riku needs her clone back

Or three mid-level bakudo stacked on top of each other. It would probably hold up long enough to immobilize the hollow permanently with Wabisuke, Zabimaru's not!bankai or Riku's intervention.

Also, Mirai would probably be a huge help against countering Aizen's kido and possibly even his shikai. Though I am a bit suspicious of her to be honest.

We also need to go to the moon. That's not the kind of thing you get to ignore.

About that, something about Rukia's relatively low aptitude as a shinigami has been bothering me.

In canon, iirc, she is a sharp cookie and a fast study with fairly well rounded abilities, moreover, here she is also a commando: an elite shinigami of the 9th hand-picked by riku herself and extensively trained to the point where they are at least equivalent to most lieutenants and in some cases, such as Mirai , even stronger.

So if Rukia is such a jobber, it doesn't make much sense to me why that is the case. Riku has noone to blame but herself for Rukia's falling behind expectations. Riku scouted her for her talent, made her a commando, and then just kinda neglected her.

Am I alone in this, or does anyone else see Rukia as being weaker than she should thoretically be?
>>
>>1275973
That reminds me: Aizen and company have been joined by Mayuri in this timeline. I suspect he may very well be lending his expertise to powering up Aizen's Arrancar minions.

Since Kisuke is already researching the hollow regeneration serum, maybe he could also look into unlocking/reawakening/amplifying the regeneration abilities of our own resident arrancars. Might help even the playing field somewhat, especially considering the other side has sad bat.

Mayuri might have already cooked up far worse, and I ain't saying we should start experimenting on anyone against their will, but they might be glad to have that ability later on.

Since Kubo basically wrote out hollow regeneration for most arrancars as a lazy convenience, we might be able to get away with getting it written back in for a good cause.
>>
>>1278051
It really only came up when Tatsuki needed a sparring partner, I think. Before that, she was pretty good and there were a few conversations about us trying to push her towards bankai
>>
>>1278093
Now, I think she might actually be a bit weaker than in canon, despite having better training, stronger resolve, and not having her energy eaten by the plot rock for a few months
>>
I think you guys are just underestimating the power differences between this quest and canon. Like I'm pretty sure Rukia or Tatsuki are both well ahead of Renji right now.
>>
>>1278051

We could vote to train Rukia in our Valley Of Screams.

Come on, it will be fun!
>>
>>1278163
That's a bit of a reach. Renji does still have Bankai even if it is imperfect.

Also, Rukia was conveniently down at Tatsuki's level when she was just starting out. That's suspect in itself considering Rukia has what amounts to years of military training as opposed to Tatsuki's experience as a kickboxer for sport.
>>
I really want to get Rukia to bankai, just so we can show Hitsugaya what the 'strongest ice-type zanpakuto' really is
>>
>>1282186
Yea she makes it to captain of the thirteenth for good reason.

Although towards the end when Kubo had just completely ceased giving a fuck, Hitsugaya also starts doing some serious asspulling with his own Bankai. Things are so ridiculous by then though that I basically feel like there is no official canon anymore: just a series of half-baked ideas. E.G. the new rules for Hyorinmaru are so arbitrary and vague that you can't feasibly describe its properties. All you would be doing is second guessing wtf Kubo was going for.
>>
>>1279401
They both look weak as shit because they're able to push each other on their respective weak spots. At this point Rukia is actually a bit stronger than in canon despite not being cleared for Bankai yet, and unlike Renji she's set up to do that right the first time.
>>
>>1282657

Well, I hope you can understand where some of us are coming from when we scratch our heads and wonder why Rukia seems so weak.

>They both look weak as shit because they're able to push each other on their respective weak spots.

. . . Okay. Sorry if this comes across as me giving you a hard time, but I don't think that is an adequate explanation to cover Rukia's bumbling. I still feel like Rukia's weakest spot would logically still be ahead of Tatsuki due to the years of training. I mean, supposing her Hakuda is her weak point: did she straight up flunk Hakuda in the academy? Tatsuki is still getting the hang of her new superhuman strength and speed at this point, let alone the hard stuff. Rukia should give her a run for her money if she had even a rudimentary skill in Hakuda.

I mean come on, Riku even straight up TOLD Tatsuki how freaking difficult it would be if she tried to compare straight across to real shinigami due to the insurmountable gap in experience and time. She explained how Tatsuki was going to have to work hard and get creative to be anything other than a liability. Instead Rukia acts like the bigger liability as she has no coordination in combat at all. It's practically farce: she gets bowled over by a 2 day old pseudo-shinigami attempting to shunpo for, like, the first time. I realize that was probably in service of going for a scene with a more lighthearted tone, but there really hasn't been much else to judge SSQ's version of Rukia off of. Even unarmed, surely Rukia would have had some decent awareness and reactions drilled into her, right?

Probably wouldn't even be having this issue if we had more examples of her being competent, but we don't. So all we have is Rukia's lovable incompetence.

I swear I am not high or crazy or whatever, there is a good reason to believe that SSQ Rukia is a bit behind based on what we have. Excerpt from thread 79:

>“You could have stopped her,” Yoruichi observes calmly. “Taken advantage of her mistake. Hands higher, feet further apart, hips lower.”

>“Yes, Captain Shihōin!” Rukia replies, trying awkwardly to assume a proper stance.

>Yoruichi sighs. “Other foot forward, Kuchiki.”

Seriously? Even her basics are completely garbage? What gives?
>>
>>1283141
>Even her basics are completely garbage?

It does seem a bit odd when you consider that she’s been with us for a century. Did one of the top ten hakuda masters in history never think to give any lessons to one of her commandos in that time?
>>
>>1283141
Okay, while I get where you're coming from you also have to recall that Rukia has been at this fifty years or so: everyone else her rank or higher in the Ninth has been at it for at very least twice that. On top of that Tatsuki has had a LOT of invasive help to even be a useful sparring partner for Rukia despite the fact that neither canon nor SSQ Rukia is particularly versed in hakuda.

The only time you've seen her actually fighting seriously it was a Sternritter, so that also likely skews perception. But compare that to her "fight" with Grimmjow at a comparable point in canon and it should suggest thedifference.
>>
>>1283250
Wait, when did we get Rukia again? I think I’m misremembering.
>>
>>1283263
You may be mixing her up with Mirai.
>>
>>1283257
Honestly, it was kind of the same thing; she swings, she gets dropped in one shot, someone saves her
>>
>>1283313
She was still standing when Riku got to her. Even that much is a serious step up from canon.
>>
Omake idea:
>Ichigo charges in to rescue Rukia, making an attack on Captain Kusajishi… only to suddenly find himself back in the underground training area with an amused Yoruichi looking down at him.
>He asks what just happened.
>Yoruichi tells him.
>>
>>1283445
Thing is, it doesn't really seem like it. She doesn't fight much, so we don't really get to see if she has a real increase in power, and we treat her as though she were comically bad at cqc and acceptable at kido, as opposed to canon where she was decent in most respects and prodigiously good at kido
>>
>>1283257
>But compare that to her "fight" with Grimmjow at a comparable point in canon and it should suggest the difference.

Okay, but that was her looking helpless against Grimmjow. In SSQ it is freshly minted Tatsuki she is being compared to.

And anyhow, Grimmjow must have eaten his Wheaties that morning, because he also completely no sells Ichigo in Bankai. Calls him slow when speed is basically all Ichigo's Bankai does. Seems like Kubo was being Kubo and skewing things pretty heavily in that encounter in a way that isn't really reflected later on in the Hueco Mundo arc. (probably so these new "Arrancar" could make a dramatic splash and get established as serious business.) Captains, who post soul society arc have been established as, for the most part, being in approximate parity with pre-Vizard Ichigo, maybe a little ahead of him, battle other, stronger Arrancar with RELATIVELY little trouble; Hitsugaya being the most egregious offender. Kubo being inconsistent with relative character abilities? Never!

But I digress, Rukia has still been a full-fledged Shinigami for longer than Tatsuki's been alive. That is a lot of training and practice. Was Rukia skipping out on Hakuda practice all those years? I would have thought Riku would have taken one look at her bad form and went: "This will not do."

So is Riku in the habit of recruiting commandos without thoroughly vetting them and putting them through their paces and then subsequently letting them slack off for 50 years? Because as it is written, Rukia is worse than below average at one of the 4 major shinigami disciplines--and that is putting it charitably.

Less charitably, her hand to hand and practical combat skills/awareness seem to be such a joke that it calls her competence in other things like Zanjutsu in to question.

>Tatsuki has had a LOT of invasive help to even be a useful sparring partner for Rukia despite the fact that neither canon nor SSQ Rukia is particularly versed in hakuda.

IIRC, yea canon Rukia isn't especially good at Hakuda, but she wasn't especially bad at it either, right? In SSQ she seems worse than bad: she seems clueless. Did she forget the basics? As far as invasive help: the peanut gallery had to tell Rukia extremely simple stance form--day one academy stuff.
>>
>>1286229
It occurs to me I am riding this awful hard, and I wanted to qualify that by saying that this is a fairly minor issue in an otherwise spectacularly well written quest.

It stands out all the more because of how tight and awesome everything else is.

I am totally okay with just calling this a one off mistake.

I am also totally okay with King insisting that I'm making a mountain out of a molehill and there is no real mistake, in which case I am fine agreeing to disagree.

I am eagerly awaiting the continuation regardless.
>>
I'm more confused about the whole thing with Rukia than upset, desu. Queen tends to have fairly specific reasons for everything that happens in this quest, but I really can't figure out why Rukia is so comparatively low-powered when she probably ought to be able to out-do anybody with a Lieutenant seat who isn't Rangiku
>>
>>1286353

I'm not upset either, just being insistent and emphatic so I can be satisfied that I have successfully communicated what I saw that was bothering me.

Honestly I think you guys are picking nits and then extrapolating that to be more evidence than it actually is. It reminds me of Star Wars fans talking about the lore implications gray jedi in tones of authority.

>but I really can't figure out why Rukia is so comparatively low-powered when she probably ought to be

Compared to whom? Based on what lines that have been in the quest? Or are you actually just basing this on a few grains of descriptive text that aren't actually indicative of anything meaningful enough to draw conclusions?

Right now Rukia is however strong Queen says she is, because so far Queen hasn't said enough about Rukia's fights in order for you to actually say anything about "comparatively low-powered when she probably ought to be". Right now Queen can still throw Rukia into a fight, have her be a complete bad-ass, and it'd still be completely justified. Or he could have Rukia get punched in the womb so hard she doubles over and just sucks wind, and he could justify that too.

>>1287008

Hi Anon! I just want you to know that I, in all seriousness and without an ounce of sarcasm or enmity, appreciate your spunk!

Your passionate post, while moving, seems to indicate you have overlooked, ignored or unduly discounted some things, however, I will not insult your intelligence by repeating anything in this post. If you wanted to know about it, you would have read it yourself.

I will simply summarize that this discussion you are generalizing is about a perceived inconsistency, that is, the QM has spun things out in a way that I am attempting to indicate implies a problematic contradiction. It is not, for once, about waifus. And you have my word that my only motive is to seek attention and validation help Queen keep this quest great.

After all, narrative inconsistency can really put a damper on a good story.
>>
>>1287533
My entire point, however, was that there is no inconsistency because there is no 'before' to compare to the 'after'.
>>
>>1287707

Premise 1: ALL the commandos of the 9th are among the best trained of all Shinigami. They are handpicked by Captain Riku for quality, and their prowess and high standard has been repeatedly asserted by Queen.

Premise 2: Rukia is a commando and has been for about 50 years, confirmed here: >>1283257

Premise 3: Rukia has been paired to train with Tatsuki, someone who is literally brand new to all this. An unusual choice to put a 50 year veteran with a rookie, until you notice that Queen has demonstrated that Rukia's Hakuda in particular is below academy graduate standards, let alone 9th division commando standards. She is so bad at it that it calls her general combat competence into question. From SSQ thread 79:

>“You could have stopped her,” Yoruichi observes calmly. “Taken advantage of her mistake. Hands higher, feet further apart, hips lower.”

>“Yes, Captain Shihōin!” Rukia replies, trying awkwardly to assume a proper stance.

>Yoruichi sighs. “Other foot forward, Kuchiki.”

Later same thread:

>Yoruichi merely laughs. “Hey, you actually threw that one right! Well done, Kuchiki!”

>“What did I do differently?” Rukia muses, staring at her own hands as she flexes her fingers. “It felt different somehow.”

>“That's because you used hakuda properly,”

QED: given premise 3, premise 1 and/or 2 must be false.

Put another way: Rukia's abilities are not consistent with what we have been led to believe one would reasonably expect from a commando of the 9th division.
>>
>>1288540
The difference is between basic and advanced hakuda: the former is as far as the vast majority of shinigami ever get, focusing more on "external" forms that will at least have some effect for a shinigami. All Lieutenants and the Commandos are capable of that much. But advanced hakuda requires much stronger reiatsu and better control over it, because it harnesses both what you'd call "inner" and "external" power. Which Tatsuki can do instinctively with her zanpakuto, but Rukia and the others have to re-learn to a degree.

Riku is unusual in that Yoruichi basically taught her to run before she could walk, but I've always tried to at least suggest that hakuda works that way: which is why Shunko is considered the pinnacle of hakuda technique, and why both Riku and Yoruichi insist that all of the combat forms overlap more the greater one's skill is.
>>
>>1289978

Can we dtop the argument abd just vite to give Rukia the Riku training special from hell?
>>
>>1290156
Weren’t we going to do that either way?

I mean, she can’t even take on one captain (let alone three) while brewing tea and doing her paperwork, how did we even let her in the commandos in the first place?
>>
>>1289978
>>1290156

Fine fine. I still think Rukias hakuda deficiency was overexagerated to some extent, what with having to be told the proper way to stand, but I will leave it at that.

I wonder what regular training for commandos is like anyhow.
