You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

The whole Presidential dinner was ancient history now, with the banquet hall cleaned out and the foreign dignitaries returning home. However, the war was still on, and with that formalities out of the way, it was now back to work.

Once again, you and your fellow shipgirls were lounging around in the briefing room, waiting for the briefing to start. Since the room was fairly empty, only populated by your own squadron and few other shipgirls, you were figuring that this was going to a relatively small operation. Certainly not something on the level of Singapore.

Unfortunately, Anna was out coordinating patrols. And Paz was over at the workshop for her regular maintenance under Vahlen's supervision. Otherwise, the usual crowd was here. San Diego and Haida were busy trying to corral the Fletchers while Portland was getting Indy acclimated to the room. White Plains looked to be talking shop with Midway. San Fran was of course trying to deal with DesDiv 6, desperately resisting the urge to drown her anxiety with alcohol and tobacco. And of course, a few Japanese shipgirls were present as well.

So all in all, a pretty regular day.

Finally, the Captain steps in, and he looked to be a proper mess. On the surface, he looked clean and crisp as ever, but there was a slight drag and delay to his normally sharp and precise movements. Was he tired? You don't recall ever seeing him fatigued.

The brief silence and muffled whispers indicated the others seemed to the notice in the change in his body language as well.

The Captain shoots you a very tired, but slightly annoyed look.

"Just a bad night's sleep, that's all." The Captain grunts, a bit too quickly to sound natural. "Now, let's get back on point. The briefing shall now begin."

There's some more hushed, conspiratorial whispering among the shipgirls, but it's all silenced by one loud cough from the Captain, who is clearly not wanting rumors to spread.

"Anyways, this mission will be a little different from what you're used to." The Captain explains, bringing up a map of the waters north of Japan.

"In what way?" San Diego asks curiously.

"Looking for buried treasure?!" Kidd's eyes shine.

"...not exactly." The Captain shakes his head. "You'll be heading into the north Pacific, near Russian waters."

There's another hushed tone.

"Are we helping defend the Russians?" San Fran asks skeptically. "Last I checked, they weren't so helpful to us."

"Something like that." The Captain sighs. "With our victories in Midway and Singapore, Abyssal presence in the Pacific has decreased significantly, with Abyssal activity limited to around the Bering Strait. This means that Russia has started sending its own Pacific forces out to sea now."

"So, what's the point in going up there?" Haida asks.

"Unfortunately, we've had reports of Russian ships harassing civilian shipping and Allied patrols, even in international waters." The Captain sighs. "So we will be conducting a Freedom of Navigation exercise."

"A freedom of what?" Johnston asks curiously.

"Simply put, we send out a military presence in international waters to politely remind others that they are free for travel for everybody." The Captain explains. "I'd rather we perform more anti Abyssal patrols, but we can't afford to have supply convoys get delayed."

"Sure thing." You shrug.

"Hoel, you'll be leading the FoN patrol." The Captain looks to you. "To foster the image that we're a multinational force, we'll be adding British and Japanese shipgirls to your force as well, but you're free to pick someone from your squadron to accompany you. We don't want to provoke the Russians too much, so do try to avoid anything heavy like battleships or carriers."

"Hey, Dorsie, ya need help looking for her?" You ask as you walk up to the British cruiser.

"Oh dear god yes." Dorsetshire sighs. "Repulse is a bit of a... troublesome ship."

"How so?" You ask as you stride alongside the British cruiser.

"Well, her heart is in the right place, but Repulse always seems to have a spot of trouble errr..." Dorsie pauses to find the right wording. "...finding what he's looking for."

"You mean she gets lost a lot." You conclude.

"Something like that." Dorsie nods. "A bit of a bad habit of hers, even back in the War. She never was quite able to find her targets, either because she lost her way or got to the area too late. I suppose it's carried over to her shipgirl life, as well."

"...huh." You frown. "Can't be any worse than Kongou, right?"

"That is... somewhat debatable." Dorsie sighs.

"Well, how hard can it be?" You crack your knuckles and fire up your radar.

You radar pings as you gain an electronic image of the whole base. You see the buildings, the individual shipgirls and staff as they mill about on their everyday activities. Even the aircraft taking off and landing at the nearby airfield.

However, one contact catches your attention. A shipgirl moving at high speed, weaving through the streets and paths of the base in a strange, seemingly random search pattern. That had to be her.

Unfortunately, it looked like the course she was taking was going to take her straight out of the base and into the outlying city...

You see Repulse speeding towards the base's front gate. Already, you could see the poor Marines standing guard there hastily getting into ready positions or running out of the path of the crazy shipgirl as she descends upon them. You needed to get her attention and fast!

"OI! BRITBONG!" You yell, not really thinking.

However, it works, and Repulse comes screeching to a halt, smoke and the stench of burnt rubber wafting up from her shoes as she spins around to face you. As you expected of a British shipgirl, she was blonde and pretty. She also had an oversized red bow tied to the back of her head and looked kind of like a pair of rabbit ears protruding out.

"WHO SAID THAT?!" Repulse bellows back, her bow somehow twitching wildly. "I'm totally late for a briefing and I'm pretty sure it's this way so I don't have time to give the chav who said that a proper wallop!"

"Too late. Briefing's over." You say simply.

"Eh?" Repulse pauses. "W-what?"

"Yeah, I was just there. Ended like ten minutes ago." You inform her.

And that's when the British battlecruiser collapses to her knees.

"AGH! I'M TOO LATE AGAAAAAAAAIN!" She wails.

"Uhhh, it's not that big a deal." You frown. "I can give you the lowdown-"

"WHAT GOOD IS MY SPEED IF I CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE BATTLEFIELD ON TIIIIIIIME!" She continues to wail in despair.

You notice the Marines slowly inching away from, and you couldn't really blame them.

"Honestly." Dorsie gives a disappointed sigh that would make any governess blush as she walks up and grabs Repulse by the collar. "While your enthusiasm is appreciated, you should really learn to conduct yourself properly as a shipgirl of the Royal Navy. This sort of behavior is unbecoming of a ship of your stature-"

"DORSIIIIEEEE!!!" Repulse sobs as she grabs Dorsie's jacket and starts sobbing into it. "I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE HEEEEEERE!"

Dorsetshire gives a rare, utterly bewildered look at this sudden turn of events, as now she's suddenly the focus of everybody's attention.

"Honestly." Dorsie sighs as she bows her head apologetically to the Marines. "I'm sorry for the conduct of my fellow shipgirl. I hope she didn't inconvenience you too much."

"Ahhh, we've had worse." One of the Marines shrugs. "Least she ain't Kongou."

The other Marines nod in agreement.

"Well, I'll get Repulse settled in and get her briefed." Dorsie sighs as she leads the battlecuiser away. "Thank you for the assistance, Hoel."

You've still got a bit of time before your ride was leaving, so you though that it would be a good time to swing by the workshop to see how Paz was doing.

By this point, the workshop wasn't nearly as crowded as it used to be, now that most of the shipgirls that had been at Singapore were finally rested and repaired. This left Shen and Akashi plenty of free time to experiment as they toiled away with their gadgets in the depths of the building. You decided not to bother them as you headed for the section cordoned off by Vahlen for her private use.

You head for the door, and your sonar picked up the sounds of talking inside.

You try to sneak up to the door, only to have it swing open suddenly, revealing a very bemused Vahlen.

"Ah, you weren't trying to eavesdrop on private conversations now, are we?" She raises an eyebrow. "Most people consider that sort of thing quite rude."

"I wasn't trying to do anything!" You insist.

"Mhm." Vahlen nods, completely unconvinced. "Either way, if you want to talk to Pacifica, then you'll just have to wait until maintenance is over. Until then, the procedure requires some privacy."

And then Vahlen gently closes the door in your face.

Fuck, you didn't even get a chance to see Paz, either. What a waste.

With the mission time coming up soon, you decide to hoof it over to the airport. There, you could see the waiting Osprey. White Plains, Yahagi, Dorsetshire, and Repulse were already present. Seems like Dorsie had managed to calm down Repulse somewhat. Yahagi of course was eying the newcomer warily while White Plains did an ammo check to make sure she brought the right loadouts.

The Captain was also present.

"Hoel." He nods at your arrival. "Good luck on your mission."

"Um, sure?" You frown. The Captain usually didn't see you off personally like this.

"I'm afraid I haven't been quite truthful to you in the briefing." The Captain hands you a sealed envelope. "It's information of a sensitive nature. Open it once you arrive at the drop point."

"Um, okay?" You nod with slight confusion.

You nod, taking the envelope, saluting, and then boarding the Osprey.

The transit to the drop zone was normal enough. However, once you got a distance away from Japan, something began to pique your interest on radar. A plane, large and fast, was approaching on an intercept course with the Osprey. Your radar training with Anna suggested that the contact was one of those Russian jet fighters.

"Aw crap." The pilot groans when what looks to be a Su-27 starts flying menacingly just off to the side of the Osprey.

"Are we getting any comms?" Dorsie asks as she glances out the window.

"Completely radio silent." The pilot answers. "And before you ask, no, we're nowhere near Russia right now."

"He's just trying to intimidate us. Pay him no heed." Yahagi sighs.

"I say we get our carrier here to deploy some planes and put a bee up his knickers!" Repulse suggests.

"Er, I guess I can deploy a few fighters to try and scare him off..." White Plains shrugs.

"Slow it down." You instruct the pilot. "If he wants to shadow us so bad, let's see if he wants to risk stalling."

"Sure thing." The pilot nods as he dials back the Osprey's speed, gradually switching it to its helicopter mode.

Fortunately for everybody involved, the Su-27 pilot wasn't dumb enough to stall himself, and the jet fighter shoots forward, no doubt to circle back around.

"He'll have eyes off for a few seconds." The pilot explains. "We're still short of the LZ, but if you drop now, I think I can lead him away on a merry chase so he doesn't see you."

"Drop us down." You say.

"Got it." The pilot nods as he dips the Osprey down just low enough that you and your fellow shipgirls could disembark safely.

"Go go go!" You yell as the ramp lowers, and all of you leap out and land securely on the water below. The Osprey then begins picking up speed again as it vectors southward again. At this point, the Su-27 has fully circled around, and jets off to continue its shadowing of the Osprey.

So far so good.

As you and your little patrol begin sailing your way north to your original LZ, you finally take the chance to tear open the envelope, revealing the Captain's secret orders. You raise an eyebrow as you read through it. Turns out this wasn't an ordinary patrol.

This was a rescue mission...
