You close the door gently, your toiletries tucked underneath your armpits as you start your day. Kaga, thankfully, doesn’t stir much – she needed all the rest that she could get and you didn’t feel like being a party to the deprivation of her rest. She’d tossed and turned a lot… you’d ended up holding her close to keep her from struggling; it did the job, somewhat: the only odd thing to proceed right after was the occasional rub of her thigh against your groin. Thankfully, due to your previously oversexed self abolished by… a healthy amount of it coming your way, it only caused the occasional stir instead of you having to resort to drastic measures.

You didn’t want to be the first person in the history of males to wake up a woman for a round in the hay without so much as a ring.

There had been no dreams from your end – no dreams from hers, either. Just the sweet embrace of rest and dreamless slumber to prepare you for another day.

You approach the sink and wash your face, coughing as the cold feeling of your steel hand makes contact with your skin. Steadying yourself against the counter, you see yourself in the mirror – the last few days had done a number on you… and the gain of muscle was all the more apparent compared to the you from days past. You’d always told yourself – back when you had sorted yourself out kitchen-to-kitchen – that you would make yourself better one day, and… to your absolute surprise, you had.

There wasn’t any entering body-building contests, of course, but your towel needed less trips around your belly… and your clothes had become a lot baggier since your foray into the frontl ines. Personally, you wouldn’t square yourself up against any of the pretty boys in magazines – yet, but it was nice to know that you weren’t anywhere near your old, pudgy self as you had been in the early days of your career.

You’d grown since you’d come here… and sometimes a little change upfront was nice to see. You slip into a pose, sucking in your cheeks as you hunch over for emphasis.

‘Didn’t expect to see you up so early, Commander.’

Surprised, you turn on your heel, almost slipping.

'Houshou.’

To your surprise… she’s not clad in a towel. In fact, she looked more covered than she was compared to before, clad in a thick bathrobe that looked too luxurious and about a size too big. Not that it was hard to be bigger than her, of course, but it was definitely the first time that you’d seen her in something so… expensive. It was pink, fluffy and… more than that, it was puffy. She looked like she was in the epicenter of a furry marshmallow. You eye her up and down, confused as to her state.

‘LEIA gave it to me.’ Houshou grimaces – or at least you think she does; it was hard to tell between the all-encompassing bathrobe and the equally-fluffy towel that covered her head. You nod slowly. ‘She said that it was about a size too small for her and wanted to…’ She scrunches her nose, pouring what appeared to be a cleanser of sorts, ‘she gave it to me as a sort of gift.’

‘If you don’t think it’s appropriate, why don’t you give it back?’

She looks shocked at the very suggestion.

‘Of course I like it!’ She turns red – or rather, pink. Almost as pink as the robe and towel she sported. ‘I mean…’ she clears her throat, gathering herself, ‘it’s a gift – from a human that… cared enough to call me friend.’ A smile returns to her features, the pink on her cheeks slowly turning into maroon and…

Her smile going from one of embarrassment to one of fondness.

‘It’s something that’s nice to feel, once in a while.’

You open your mouth to say something… but ultimately find yourself speechless. Houshou was wearing an expression that you’d only seen once – and even then, only partly: when you’d been on the floor together, making love. That same fond upturn of her lips and that distant, yet warm shine in her eyes.

‘Am I distracting you, Commander?’

You stutter, gathering yourself. You realize that you’d been staring at her for quite some time. The warm look in her eyes was gone, replaced by that damnably inviting haze. Amidst her giggles, you begin your process of shaving your beard and brushing your teeth, not willing to get caught up in her pace just yet. It’s not long before you’re throwing your towel and eyepatch on the rack and, deciding to forgo the usual waiting for warm water, get under the cold droplets of shower, shivering as they make contact with your skin.

Houshou follows suit not long after, throwing you that same smile… but saying nothing else as she discards her robe and towel, washing herself under the frigid shower stall next to you.

>‘Not going to… you know, go through your usual rounds?’
>‘So, um… how are you handling this… cold period?’

Before I go any further: PLEASE READ THIS LITTLE WARNING ON CONVERSATION TOPICS because people seem to have a lack of understanding on how I do things, so I'll be clearing them here.

1. You won't be able to ask all questions. Sometimes a character is as pressed for time as you are or they may not be comfortable answering certain questions. However, all questions will be taking units of time from the character you talk to.

2. Some topics will disappear. If the character leads in to something that would otherwise be answered in the other prompt, chances are that topic will be gone.

3. A guide for this is that technical discussions would generally take large chunk of time and thought. So when reading through the paragraphs, look for reminders of long stretches of time that have passed. e.g. "Several sips go by; a few rounds and hands dealt over time".]]

4. It's your job to manage what you want to ask among yourselves.

That's all.

‘Houshou, when I was in Ominato, Kaga… she did something to me.’

Houshou frowns, turning so as to fully face you. She tilts her head, waiting for you to say your piece.

‘I went to see her in the Recovery Unit. The one that…’ You decided to skip the details and get to the meat of it. There was no point trying to add-on what was unnecessary. ‘She grabbed me; I don’t know if she was conscious or not, but when she took me I went into this really weird dream and there was this giant and it… I think it was going to kill me.’ You pause for a moment. ‘The Grand Lieutenant – he revived me later, but… I never bothered to ask what was going on. I thought I’d – !’

For the first time since she was assigned to you, you see her face contort – in your direction.

‘The first thing I’m going to tell you… is that you’re a moron to come anywhere close to a KanMusu that’s fully submerged in a Restoration Unit.’ She begins coolly – the veil of annoyance coming down upon her gaze. Whatever you had done – whatever had happened – she was something she was going straight for your jugular over. ‘That’s not even going into the dangers of what you went through yet – the concentration that we’re exposed to could very well kill you, you know that?’

‘I – !’

She steps out of her shower, glaring up at you and jabbing you almost painfully in the abdomen.

You’re reminded that she wasn’t just an oversexed lady, but a war machine holding almost a decade of front line experience.

‘Being Commander means you can be given low-to-moderate concentrations – it doesn’t mean that you can bathe in Fata Aqueous like it’s some magical mystery cure.’

‘I get that, but – !’

‘No. Buts.’ You quickly shut up. Her voice had taken the same tone when she had scolded those fairies from before. ‘You don’t understand just how much danger you were in. Do you even know what could have happened to you if you hadn’t been pulled out in time?’

She tempers herself, taking a step back and clutching her hand, her face unreadable.

‘That, and… I’m not sure that you understand how…’ she looks to her feet, her expression hidden by her wet locks of hair, ‘strongly she feels about you.’

She shakes her head, before glaring up at you again.

‘What you saw was what your mind perceived as a domination phenomenon.’ She reveals. ‘Kaga’s exposed psyche resonated with yours – her core must have been in the later stages of repair when you…’ she lets out a sigh, rubbing hjer temples, ‘It’s different for everyone, different for each and every Commander, every KanMusu, but the end result is the same: you either end up brain-dead, a vegetable or if you’re lucky, mildly insane.

There’s a tired, shaken tone to her voice. She turns away from you, her shoulders echoing her sentiment.

‘Don’t you have something to say?’ She snaps at you.

It's not so much you fucked up, it's more that Kaga going crazy like that wasn't on anyone's minds. There's a reason that the people wanted you to strip out of your clothes back when you were going to see your crew.

Although, you just being close and inciting a reaction in an effectively-sealed environment is... strange, considering instabilities occur through direct contact. So if you could inquire into this, you might be able to find out more.

Hey Mech,

How many of these little details that seem to be known by other military personnel were we supposed to have learned during our training process?
>>
>>1245697
we didn't even make it past the selection process
>>
>>1245697
This isn't something you learn. And military personnel doesn't know anything about this. You already know you risk insanity by being a Commander in the first place.

You just don't know how frequently the sources can pop up.
>>
>>1245697
>>1245704

We can't possibly know every single detail. Ideally we should have been stopped by the techs at the repair bay.
>>
>>1245704
Yeah I know we didn't pass muster, but I thought we went through some sort initial training
>>
>>1245711
I think it was just showing up and letting them test you. IIRC Commander passed the aptitude tests to get his Stream hooked up to kanmusu, but failed everything else
>>
‘I’m sorry.’

‘Is that all you have to say?’

‘I was ignorant.’ You sigh. Even if you didn’t know what could have happened, you suppose you could have heeded the warning of the man who had attended to them and stayed out anyway. ‘I… I just went in for a visit and didn’t think anything about it. I was worried and… I decided that walking in and just seeing how they were doing was… look, I’m just sorry, all right – I didn’t know things could have been that bad.’

Houshou goes slightly wide-eyed, surprised at your declaration. Her gaze softens considerably, amidst the falling shower droplets, she wipes at her brow, continuing to wash herself.

‘No, I…’ She shakes her head, her hair whipping around as she begins scrub at her neck. ‘There haven’t been many cases where a KanMusu would initiate a Domination Phenomenon like that – Carriers are prone to it, but… your emotional connection with Kaga might be a lot stronger than I expected.’ She grimaces. ‘Akashi would have had a field day with the details.’ She shakes her head again, biting her lip. ‘It’s not… it’s not totally your fault.’

You tilt your head, slightly more confused than you were before.

‘The theoretical occurrence would have happened in a heightened state of awareness… or a connection, but if what you’re saying is true, then it could only mean that Kaga’s connection to you has never wholly closed.’ She gathers her arms underneath her breasts, looking more troubled by the moment. ‘It’s uncommon, but… I think it’s been left open all this time.’

‘What connection? The Stream?’

She opens her mouth to say something… before closing it, looking thoughtful.

‘The doorway – it must somehow still be ajar, but if Kaga attacked you and to initiate a Domination Phenomenon… something must be forcing it to stay open.’

‘What could be forcing it to stay open?’

‘Stress? Emotional need?’ She shrugs, less nonchalant and more genuinely clueless. ‘There have been cases, but… Domination Phenomenons have always been negligible save for a select few cases, and those only happened in controlled environments.’ She seems to bite the inside of her cheek, even deeper in thought. ‘It could be any… myriad of ways that could have left the pathway open after the artificial key – The RAY’s systems – were taken away. But if Kaga reacted to you without any contact, by proximity, then…’

She washes the back of her neck, turning away from you.

‘That means that there’s something between the both of you that has to be addressed… either from her end, or yours.’

Now she’s the one that looks apologetic.

‘I’m sorry, that’s all I know.’

‘So what is exactly a… domination phenomenon?’

Houshou doesn’t answer immediately, lathering her hair as much as she could afford. Her mouth opens and closes several times, trying to

‘It’s hard to explain, it’s… when there’s discrepancy between the two gateways that make a Stream.’ She adopts a troubled expression, eying you suspiciously. ‘A sort of… instability, you can say. It’s very rare to come across as even the worst domination phenomenon that could happen in the past just resulted in violent seizures, not…’ she shakes her head, ‘In any case, it’s what happens when an unstable Stream that is supposed to snap shut… doesn’t.’ Briefly pausing, she turns her gaze downward. ‘Kaga’s connection to you non-withstanding, the phenomena could potentially cause lasting mental damage by means of an unfiltered feedback, but… there’s never been a Stream so strong that it stays open even though unstable through natural means.’

‘What do you mean through natural means?’

She turns away from you, washing under her arms.

‘You’re aware of The Admiralty’s practices.’ There’s an edge in her voice.

‘So is that what I saw?’ You go on, hoping that she could answers as much as possible. ‘That giant.’

‘It could have just been how you perceived it was happening. No two experiences up here are the same after all.’ She raises two hands, slapping them together. ‘What concerns me more… is Kaga coming attacking you like that.’ She frowns again, looking up at you. ‘You didn’t put your hand in the unit or anything?’

She doesn’t sound angry – in fact, she sounds downright inquisitive now.

‘I was thinking about it – !’ At her deepening frown, you collect yourself. You didn’t ‘But I didn’t. She just reached out and pulled me in. No contact whatsoever.’

She brings a hand to her chin. Your showers wash the soap off you; as you wait for her answer, you begin cleaning yourself once more, wondering just why The Admiralty, let alone The Admiral or Vice-Admiral, hadn’t told you of this phenomena. If you had been in as much danger as The Grand Lieutenant and Houshou had implied, why hadn’t it been common knowledge that a domination phenomenon could have occurred?

‘I’m sorry, these kind of things… due to the nature of them, they’re not exactly common knowledge.’ She sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. ‘

‘That’s all right – it’s not on you, really.’

‘I’m sorry I couldn’t explain any more than I have.’

‘No, you… you’ve done a lot for me.’ You stumble over your own words this time. ‘Thank you.’

Houshou doesn’t reply, instead going back to her own shower to finish off.

‘How have things been on-base?’ You inquire. ‘For you, I mean?’

‘As busy as always, my capacity may not be stretched, but I still have to meet the usual demand.’ She chuckles, shutting the shower off to properly tend to her hair. She was practically decorated in bubbles now, from the tip of her head to the shoulders. ‘How about you?’

‘Can’t complain.’ You chuckle, your arm making a whirring sound as you rub your chest down. ‘Aside from the last couple of days, business goes on as usual, I suppose.’

She wears an enigmatic smile.

It’s not the tragedy that drowns us, it’s the routine that dulls the edges of our souls.

You blink, surprised – you hadn’t expected that.

‘Didn’t know you were a reader.’

‘I can’t say that I am, but… he’s not bad, as far as autobiographies go, anyway.’ She massages her scalp, letting out another amused giggle. ‘Does sound pretty full of himself, though.’

‘Don’t they all?’

She smacks you on the arm. Despite being effectively metal, you feel small ripples coursing through your shoulder.

‘You’re horrible.’

‘Never ever passed myself for a boy scout.’

The both of you exchange hot smirks. She could be feisty when she wanted to be. There was an aura of a mature woman, wise in the ways of the world… of men; as casual as this encounter was, your head turns as you begin to see something different about the proximity between the both of you; she had always been so direct, brazen, but right now, here she was, humming a melody under her breath without so much as a suggestive thrust of her hips.

‘I just had to approve Yamashiro’s transfer back from the specialists; it’s been a chore, but I think that she’ll be able to get back into the swing of things.’ She wears a tight smile, her lips stretching more than she appeared comfortable with. ‘It wasn’t easy, but I managed to convince the ISSF to transfer her under The Admiral’s umbrella – she’ll be glad to be back in Yokosuka. Took a long while, but I managed to get her to come over here.’

‘Yamashiro?’

‘Fusou’s sister.’ She turns the knob, rinsing herself off. ‘But they couldn’t find a Commander to assign her to, so it’s going to be my job to sort that out in the meantime.’

‘Sounds more like Nagato’s domain.’

‘Nagato’s responsibilities are limited to on-base assignments.’ She pauses. ‘They’re not less in load, of course, just different. Kongou and I tended to be the go-to when the girls wanted something pushed through. Things didn’t change one bit, even when I was given a pension.’ She rubs her breasts down. ‘My assignment to you is a change in scenery – not responsibility.’

She whips her hair left and right.

‘Is there anything I need to know about Shigure and Yuudachi?’

She practically jolts in place, her bewildered expression mixing together with a furrow of her brows as she regards you, surprised by your line of inquiry. You hadn’t thought that it would have… jolted her of all things – as one of the more decorated KanMusu, you’d have hoped that Houshou would know something – she’d been around more than anyone else in your Division; and outside of it, she was only second to Kongou in service. After the debacle in Ominato, you’d been hoping to get to the bottom of Shigure’s issues once and for all.

It wasn’t so much a mystery to solve as it was something you had to look into for her sake.

Shigure was part of your Division, after all, and everything that she came with was under your watch.

Houshou pauses, not quite meeting your eyes. She turns the knob and shuts the shower, biting her lip with her wet bangs falling all over the front of her face. Her mouth opens and closes in a pattern, rubbing her arms as she tries to register the weight of your question. You knew at this point that it was something big. There wasn’t much that rattled an old gun – and that Houshou, of all the ones under your command, was like this, had you determined to reel in as much as you could.

‘Yuudachi?’ She finally speaks, looking up to you, her eyes as cold as ice. There’s a steely quality to her voice – a simmering aggression that you’d seen whenever you’d questioned your old bosses. Right now, in Houshou, you saw that more than anything else. ‘How do you know about Yuudachi?’

‘I met her the other day, in Ominato.’

Her face goes blank. She clicks her tongue and looks away again – this wasn’t something that she was comfortable with, at all; you’re reluctant to push yourself, but Shigure had practically tried to tear through you to get to Yuudachi. That wasn’t something that you could just dismiss as a merely lapse in discipline or judgment – you didn’t want to sound so self-important, but you doubt that The Grand Lieutenant would still be breathing if you hadn’t jumped in there in the nick of time.

And you wouldn’t have been breathing if Nee-san hadn’t decided your skin was worth as much as hers.

‘Shigure had a violent reaction.’

That was as understated as it could get.

‘Commander… as much as I want to, I don’t think that…’ She holds herself, balancing on one foot as she regards you with an apologetic glance. ‘But if this is something that Shigure didn’t talk with you about… it’s hardly my place to do it. I’m sorry, but…’

She trails off, turning on her heel.

You grab her wrist, holding her in place with a desperate gaze.

She hesitates again.

‘Shigure won’t talk to me, Houshou.’

‘Commander, I…’

You approach her, placing both hands on her shoulder and fixing your good eye with her two, practically pleading with her. She looks away, looking more reluctant than ever – more eager to be away from you than anywhere near, but you press on. You try to get her to say something that will help – the helplessness you felt with Shigure, the broken, weeping form of your black-haired Destroyer… it was too much, too cruel to see once more. More than cracked glass, she was…

She was but a shell crying out for help.

Help you couldn’t give her other than two arms.

It wasn’t enough. Not as it was.

‘Please, if there’s anything that you know then… even if it’s just a little, I’d like you to tell me.’ At her silence, you press on. ‘I’ll keep my feet out of the water if you want me too… but if you don’t tell me, then I can’t… I can’t do anything.

She pauses, considering your words. You shut the knob for the shower, the pitter-patter of the water against your skin and upon the floor more grating than you had expected it to be. You know that you’re practically looming over her by now, but at this point you didn’t care if she saw you as a pest or busybody. She falters for a bit… stepping away from you.

You let out a sigh. Perhaps you had pushed a little too far.

‘Some time ago, just over a year back…’ She begins, to your relief, wearing a solemn mask as she recounts the tale. ‘Shigure was part of a black operation; it was off the records but… well, rumors fly anyway. I’m not sure what the objective was, but… according to what I was able to find out, it… I’m not sure if it was a success or a failure, but…’ She clutches herself, looking more troubled by the word. ‘The Grand Lieutenant. Back then he was still a Vice-Admiral under The Admiral – !’

You go agape. You try to make sure you didn’t mishear it.

‘The Vice-Admiral served under… our Admiral?’

‘Yes.’ She affirms, softly.

‘So that’s why – I mean… go on.’

Houshou pauses for a long while, before gathering her strength… and pressing on.

‘The mission she undertook was a deep operation that was headed by Shigure’s sister Shiratsuyu. She was The Grand Lieutenant’s Sub-Commander back then, but something… something went wrong. Or right.’ ‘I can’t tell you all the details but according to what I know – from blank reports, Shigure and Yuudachi…’

She lets out a breath.

‘In the course of the operation’s execution… Shiratsuyu was made an objective. A target.’

Your blood runs cold.

‘It’s unclear but… either Shigure or Yuudachi were the ones to do so.’ She reveals solemnly. ‘The Grand Lieutenant was the one who issued the order.’

Considering that we're going to need to talk to Shigure about this, how much of this information should we use to get her to talk? I'm not entirely sure she'd handle her secret getting told by someone else very well. Maybe when we talk to her we can try to get it out of her ourselves first?

If anything it might be interesting to compare the two stories we'll get independent of one another. Also, uh... let's /not/ try to punch the GL for this, alright? He might be Wesker, but so far he's been /our/ Wesker.

‘The Grand Lieutenant?’ You furrow your brows, growing more and more confused by the second. ‘Why would he – ?’

‘I don’t know.’ She answers tightly. There was an aged, tired quality to her now; one that didn’t go well with her, you find. ‘The details of the Operation itself are beyond my access. I was only able to find out about it through bits and pieces from documents I was assigned to filter.’

She tucks her hair behind her ear, her cheeks sunken and her eyes reluctant to meet yours. The pause in her voice tells you that she wished to be pushed no further on the matter, but… as a Commander – as the man responsible for this Division, these Barracks… you knew that there was nothing to do but press on.

‘Is there anything else that you can share with me?’

She closes her eyes, taking a sharp intake of breath. It’s less of her trying to brace herself and more of her trying to gather what she knew. You give her the time to collect her thoughts – it was the least that you could do.

‘I know that The Admiral and The Grand Lieutenant never reconciled after the fight.’ You tilt your head, wondering how that reconciled with Shigure’s matter. ‘He wasn’t a ball of joy before, but The Grand Lieutenant was known to be very fond and respectful of The Admiral’s command when we were in Ominato. Back when he was still his Vice-Admiral.’

Your jaw loses what tightness it had before.

‘After The last Grand Lieutenant was forced into retirement, he headed the list of the potential candidates to replace him – the position was his not long after. Last I heard, Yuudachi was one of the few KanMusu still under his command.’ She takes a tone of finality, her eyes focusing on the tiles at your feet. ‘The Admiral was reassigned to Yokosuka after the former Admiral was reassigned to make up for the dwindling numbers.’

You nod.

‘Shigure?’

‘She was sent into confinement.’ She scrapes her fingers against her skin, growing more uncomfortable by the moment. ‘She’s been in and out but…’

‘But what?’

She hesitates to answer, shuffling her feet.

‘If you hadn’t taken her out… the Fairies would have banished her.’

You feel something twist in your gut.

‘The documents were in preliminary processing. She was deemed too dangerous. Nagato tried to help but as close as they – !’

Your head snaps down. That was something new.

‘Nagato?’ Something catches in your throat. ‘Nagato knew – ?’

Houshou opens her mouth to say something

‘I’m sorry, Commander, but that’s all I can say.’ She gives a swift bow, turning on her feet and moving towards the rack. ‘Have a good day.’

Houshou leaves, grabbing her things, leaving you to your lonesome.

There was no paperwork for today.

However, The Admiral had requested for you – along with the Vice-Admiral, who would join you later – to meet with him for an important strategic meeting in the now fully-restored town center. There had been no indication for a rush or a demand for state of dress; after all, the meeting would be taking place at about 0930 – the keyword about – which implied that it was an unofficial meeting organized among the three of you. You’re not quite sure what it was for, however: the details had only said as much. There was no set or pre-planned length, a list of the minutes…

Then again, the Admiral had never been conventional with operations.

That had been the message delivered by your lanky attendant, who had for some reason thought the best possible time for such an announcement was when you were clad in your underwear and standing half in the dark like a moron looking for clothes to wear. You’d swiftly ejected him from your room, of course… but you suppose that you did overreact by throwing a pencil holder in his direction and covering your nipples while screaming like a middle-aged woman.

Kaga had decided the same… and thrown a pillow in your direction to get you to keep quiet before falling back into her dreams.

The clock read that it was barely past 0730 – outside your room and in the hallway, you can hear the shuffle of feet, telling you that the rest of the Division was finally making their own start to the day. You open the closet again, putting your singlet on.

So what would you wear today?

Considering the vagueness of this meeting's details, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume casual wear is fine. We wouldn't want to show up dressed to the nines unless we had a specific reason to. And while I like the Nagato Jacket, I think a meeting might not be the best place to wear it, even if the meeting is more on the casual side. Though I'm probably overthinking this.

Either way, I think I'll go with:

Back when you were fat and shuffling from channel to channel on your old television set, they’d advertised weight loss products around every weekend morning; how the world would change when a pound fell off the scales; how the women would fawn over a man who was once a lump of meat and now a chiseled borderline-supermodel stomping down the street like he owned it. It was all pretentious, of course, just because someone lost weight didn’t mean that things were automatically better – life went on and you had to play catch-up for every waking moment, regardless of how much you weighed.

But damn if it didn’t feel good to realize that there wasn’t a hole in your belt to hold up your pants up properly.

‘Looking good.’ You turn around to see Kaga, now fully awake with a warm smile and her state of dress… barely there. ‘Although I’m not sure that’s standard regulation for Commanders to wear.’

‘The Admiral wants to see me.’

‘In slacks and a t-shirt?’ She delivers flatly, raising herself off the mattress and stretching. Her sleeping robe comes apart, barely hooking around the elbows and exposing her in all her glory, bandages and the like. She was uncaring of her exposure to you as you were suddenly conscious of it – you had seen her naked before; you had seen it many times. ‘Regulation must be getting a little lax since I was out on the field.

‘You were out on the field a few days ago.’ You deliver flatly. As much as you were used to her form… it didn’t make it any less attractive to you than you were to any of the others.

There was just something animalistic, primal, that just beckoned you… at least when it came to certain members of your Division.

‘Well,’ she gives an apologetic half-smile, ‘time doesn’t stand still for anyone.’

Her smile matches her gaze now; she’s prodding you much like she was before – how she always did things. Merciless, tender, cruel and lovely Kaga. You’d give her a title if you could.

She giggles lightly, her head buried in your chest.

‘I think it’s unofficial.’ You shrug, feeling a little uneasy at the affection. It almost always came with a catch. ‘He said it was going to be some kind of strategic meeting.’

‘Well, why don’t you bring one of the girls with you for the day?’ Kaga lovingly strokes your cheek… but that teasing, superior look in her eyes hadn’t faded one bit. ‘I don’t think anyone’s too busy. I checked.’

‘I don’t think I should keep them away from their duties…’ You hesitate as she pulls away. As much as you wanted to spend the day with your charges, this was a little too –

You feel her grab there.

‘Glad to see this hasn’t changed.’ She smirks.‘But I don’t know if it could, anyway.’

The door closes before you can get a word in edge-wise.

You swear under your breath.

>OOC: I'll be a little clearer. Imagine you're a robot, right? No emotions and shit, no love no hate, just doing your stuff. That's essentially the "CORE" of the KanMusu prior to their re-summoning. They're patriotic one-mission-one-done sort of machines. Now, imagine dying, not caring... but were loved "ENOUGH" that you were given a name and a purpose - the Shipgirls are not human and cannot into afterlife like mortals - like you and I. But you're a robot, so you don't give a shit and just drift, waiting for your next mission. Then you're ripped into this world from your rest to pay penance for your role in WAR, not understanding why you have to... and then you feel...

>Confusion. That's new. Fear. That's new, too.

>KanMusu summoned usually take more than a year to get used to their new form and their new legs, like a baby if you will... but what the most of them take a lot longer to handle are alien concepts like emotion, family, bonds and the like. Thank God for the fairies, amirite?

>Now, imagine, as a Carrier, conceptually your weapons... are PEOPLE. And that every single one of them has a hope, fear, dream, crime, prejudice and grudge. Now here you are, a robot who practically just summoned into a 2nd life as a human/elemental spirit to protect humanity - as it was, in your past life, that was your purpose and you are being called again. Carriers are more magically-inclined in their combat, while other ships save Akitsumaru and Akashi are more tech-inclined on the fairy spectrum.

>Because they're more magically inclined, they draw on the emotions and passions more often.

>To put it simply, imagine that every time you fire an arrow you have to tune out a cry of bloodlust from someone that served on you in your past life or a fear of not coming back.

>Not so easy being a Carrier... but as a side effect, they're a lot closer to humans than most other ships.

tl;dr They all automatically have an active libido unlike most other kanmusu, so them needing the dick is pretty much accepted

I'd argue that our sub-commander's probably has other duties to attend to as our second. Bringing a dependable shipgirl to help out should be helpful in case we miss out anything and we can bring nagato up to speed when we get back.

I think one factor that might be important is: Does takao or nagato have casual clothes.

It’s not long before you’re in front of Takao and Houshou’s room, your fist hesitant to knock. After that talk with Houshou, you’re reluctant to encounter again – and despite her baser urges, you’re quite sure she didn’t want to talk to you just yet either. Taking a deep breath, you decided that chances were fifty-fifty and you were going to have to see each other anyway. Your hand is barely a millimeter from the door when it opens. Revealing –

‘Takao…’

‘Oh, Commander.’ She drops into a bow. ‘Good morning.’

‘Good morning.’

‘Are you here to see Houshou?’

She sounds a tight saying it; as though she was biting on the words as they left.

‘I’m… here to see you, actually.’

She goes slightly agape. You don’t blame her; you’d barely initiated her in the last few days save for a few courteous gestures and professional exchanges; now, though, now there was room for you to proceed.

‘Yeah, I was wonder – !’

You finally take in the manner of her dress. Gone was the uniform, replaced by a white blouse and an all-too-tight skirt, what looked like a woven shopping bag hooked on her shoulder, filled to the brim with what appeared to be thin books.

‘What’re those?’

She instantly lights up.

‘Well, a lot of us have free time today, so… I decided to host a storybook session.’ Takao dives into the bag, taking out one of its contents. You think that it would be easier for her to unhook it before taking it out, but otherwise say nothing. ‘Nagato and Tenryuu helped me sign up for the volunteer program – it took me a while to be approved; the services are still under the MPs and they don’t take too kindly to Shipgirls… but they managed to push through a session from my part.’ She stumbles a little, balancing on one knee as she finally takes out a book. ‘It’s not much and I’m not sure if they’ll like it but…’

She proudly shoves one book under your nose.

‘I’d like to give it a shot.’

It was a picture of a bald man in a yellow jumpsuit, giving an almost-comical uppercut to a monster of sorts while a robot in the background looked on in awe.

‘You read comic books?’ You stare at her, baffled.

She stares back.

‘Doesn’t everybody?’

‘I’m sorry, I just have a hard time envisioning you reading comic books.’ You hand it back to her. She lets out a huff as she takes it back from you. ‘Is this an all-day thing?’

‘Well, not really… but the rotations haven’t been set yet. I tried checking with them but they haven’t gotten back to me… I decided to get early head start.’ She positively beams. ‘I hope they enjoy it.’

She looked so happy.

‘Have a good one, then.’ You give her a playful salute before you turn around. It was nice to see her so… cheerful for once; not that Takao hadn’t been a radiant bundle whenever she was around, but you’d always thought that it was some kind of… attempt, rather than coming from the bottom of her heart.

‘Commander?’

‘Yeah?’

You turn around… only to feel a pair of soft lips against your cheek with the soft press of a dainty thumb against your eyepatch.

Takao pulls back, more than satisfied.

Have a good one too.

She’s gone before you can get a word in edge-wise.

You find yourself back at square one – companion-less for the day; it wasn’t as if you needed someone to accompany you, but Kaga’s suggestion was a good one. The times you’d spent with the members of your Division were fond and numerous… but it felt more like a schedule that you wanted to get organized rather than spontaneous; you knew that people had to make time for their lives, but you felt like there was more to you being next to them than just allocating a period of time for the day to just have a chat or two.

Another name comes to mind…

Nagato exits the bathroom, a towel around her body and her toiletries tucked underneath her arm, humming a marching tune as she headed towards her room, not noticing you quite yet. Raising your hand to catch her attention, you approach her.

‘Nagato, I was hoping to catch you.’

‘Oh?’ The still-wet form of your Sub-Commander stares at you, confused.

‘I was wondering if you were… busy today?’

‘I am.’ She nods, stoic as ever. Lifting a hand, she begins to count down. ‘I promised Fusou that I’d help her with the re-shuffling the organizational chart by today – it’s my fault that I hadn’t corrected it to suit her own schedule, so I’ll be doing that today. Then I have to meet the Head of MPs because of something someone did…’ You could have sworn she had worn a smirk for a brief moment, ‘and the Admiral wants me to assist in organizing the synergy between the Patrol Forces and Expeditionary Forces for the coming week…’ her shoulders slump, ‘with Yamashiro, who’s going to be under the Admiral’s umbrella.’

‘That’s… quite a day you have there.’

She laughs.

‘I’m used to it.’ An honest smile spreads across her lips. ‘I’m a little bit weird like that. Musashi’s always told me to slow down.’ She smiles fondly. ‘I think everyone has their own pace for their own things, right, Commander?’

She stretches upwards… before catching her towel before it hit the ground, pressing it against her breasts.

‘Oops.’

Nagato shares an apologetic smile with you before entering her room to change. Dejected, you make your way down the stairs to leave… only find yourself bumping into your Light Cruiser, clad in her usual work clothes and hauling what appeared to be a duffel bag. She eyes you quizzically, probably confused at just how lead-footed you were… before maneuvering around you with a harrumph, lifting the large bag above your head. Thinking that there was nothing to lose, you turn to her – perhaps by some miracle, she would actually tell you that she was as free as Kaga had mentioned.

‘Tenryuu, you wouldn’t happen to be free, would you?’ You ask, practically mumbling at this point. You prepare yourself to be shot down again.

‘Yup. Whole day off.’ She turns her gaze upon you, staring down from the top of the stairs. ‘Whatcha need, sir?’

You sigh. So much for company. You resign yourself to a long slog alone.

‘That’s what I thought.’ Scratching the back of your head, you begin to make your way for the front door. ‘Have a good one.’

A free day indeed. Even if the day was as free as Kaga had said it was… it looked as though many of them already had their plans for the day sorted out. As you step onto the now-clean wooden finish of the floor, you spy a pair of banana burritos on the counter along with a note – your attendant had left you with something to munch on prior to the start of the day before he had bolted from your sight. Perhaps you had been hard on him… after all, he was –

Yup. Whole day off.

It doesn’t even take ten seconds before you’re on the upper floor again.

You catch Tenryuu as she has one foot through the door, her arms clutching the large duffel bag as she tries to fit herself and the offending item inside. You push against the bag, keeping it as balanced possible – you hear a muffle of thanks as the both of you place the duffel bag down on the floor… where you find Nachi still snoring away, clad in her underwear and little else, her feet up in the air from the angle she was in.

‘Wait a minute, did you say you were free?’

‘Oh? Yeah.’ She eyes you quizzically, her mouth tilting with confusion. ‘Is there… something wrong with that? Because I kinda did all my off-combat duties yesterday.’

‘No, it’s not that.’

Almost a little too enthusiastically… you grab her hands.

‘H – Hey, look, I’m not that kinda girl. This is…’

‘Would you mind accompanying me for the day?’

Tenryuu makes a face. She obviously hadn’t planned for you to be a part of her for the day, but… for you, had it had been quite some time since you’d spent some alone time with her – as more than Commander and subordinate. Not that you had any unprofessional inclinations in mind, of course, but… you hadn’t really gotten to know Tenryuu as much as you had the others – you’d even shaved Nachi’s privates and been smacked around silly by Samidare’s oak branch, but you hadn’t really known Tenryuu.

The trip inland had revealed more about Iowa than he. In effect, she was still as much an enigma as when you had been the clueless man who had been dropped into this situation.

So you weren’t at all surprised at the look of reluctance that she wore.

‘I don’t know where you get the idea that I’m so free, ya know, I mean…’ She looks away, biting her lip.

‘You just said you were free, didn’t you?’ You frown at her. Her cheeks flushed, she looks away, caught.

‘I did, but…’ She lets out a rough sigh, crossing her arms as she stepped back. ‘F -Fine, but if anything comes up, then… even as a Commander, I can’t be at your beck and call the whole time, right? This isn’t… some sort of…’

She trails off. You can tell that she was trying to catch herself from agitating you through her own words.

‘Of course.’ You allow her the dignity of independence and rebellion, reaching out your experience in the suave and insightful, gesturing towards the stairs. ‘I think that much we have understood.’

Tenryuu lets out another breath.

‘Thank you, sir.’ She sounds a bit stiff… a lot more controlled.

You follow her back, opening the wrapping of your banana burrito and wolfing it down as you both make your way to the door. Outside, you see some maintenance men laying down some wiring, drilling up what appeared to be a broken underground cable. They tip their hat at you, to which you give a casual salute – Tenryuu had marched on ahead at this, prompting you to catch up with her at the exit.

‘So where’re we goin’?’

‘Town center.’ You indicate the general direction. ‘You don’t mind walking, do you?’

Tenryuu looks upward – it was overcast, like it always was these days.

‘You sure about that?’ She jabs her thumb upwards.

A little rain don’t hurt nobody.

‘That’s from a horror movie.’

You grin back, mockingly bowing for her to take the first step.

She does.

‘How do you know that’s from a horror movie?’ You frown as you cross the street, Tenryuu following behind you. Several men pop up from one of the abandoned stores, offering a rigid, if slightly casual, salute.

‘You pick things up.’ She smirks enigmatically, jogging ahead. You pick up the pace, keeping up with her as she transitions back into a walk.

‘You a movie buff or something?’ You frown. It’d made sense – Tenryuu did seem to have a flair for the theatrical… probably second only to Samidare, truthfully, despite her professional and upfront demeanor.

There was something about her that you suspected from the way she carried herself: that it was all bits and pieces from war heroes and veteran molded into one cocky mix. She stares at you with her good eye as this thought flows through your mind, unamused by the accusation.

‘What? No.’ She huffs, placing her hands into the pockets of her sweater. ‘I watched movies whenever one came into the local theater, but… well, most of the time it’s from when some of the Destroyers picked up a movie they wanted… and The Admiral’d put in a request for a preview reel or something to have a movie night.’ She pauses for a moment, mumbling under her breath, her pace dropping as she took step after step, word after word. ‘I think it was around… every two weeks, or when someone needed some cheering up.’

The both of you halt in the middle of a recently-cleared sector of a seafront block, the conversation carrying through.

‘Something to take their mind off things?’ You offer.

Tenryuu doesn’t answer immediately, glancing down the street, then upwards. The roofs of the buildings around you were being restored by personnel; you could her indistinct yelling from above, even if you couldn’t see them. You catch a swear word and insult, along with friendly laughter before you continue down the empty road, no one in sight.

‘Something like that.’ She nods, her tone taking a distant tone before laughing wryly. ‘You know… for war machines detached from humanity, simulating it… well, kinda sucks.’

Her smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes.

‘What?’

She laughs, but it’s more to defuse the suddenly-heavy air between the both of you more than genuine amusement.

‘Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that I can feel something like… glad, but the things I’ve seen, the line of work that I’m in… you don’t think it’s something that’s more suited for a machine than someone who’s…’ She stumbled along the words, trailing off before looking away, her expression blank again.

‘Trying to be human?’

You feel your throat dry up.

‘You’re asking me this?’

‘I couldn’t answer Akatsuki, so… I guess I thought I’d try my luck with you.’

>‘Who’s Akatsuki?’

If you guys are wondering what's going on, I'm racking my brain here. Sorry for the delay.
>>
You had been working in the kitchen almost all your working life. You’d never come across the question of the advantages or disadvantages of personality and emotion against the stone wall of efficiency. At the end of the day, most of your bosses had counted what the register had collected over any other sort of gratification… and to be fair, at the end of the day, back then, you would have too. It was easier to be happy when you had money in your pocket – and easier to believe than the idea that anyone around you back then would have brought you an ounce of joy.

So, at the end of the day, you wondered… did the ledger weigh more than a warm hand?

‘I’d personally… I’d like the idea that it’s what keeps us going.’ You answer, albeit neutrally. You hadn’t expected to enter this in the first place… but a little experience went a long way, so you could at least lead into an eventual answer.

Hopefully.

‘Not a fan of number crunching, are we?’ There’s no humor in Tenryuu’s voice.

‘Not… totally a fan of it.’ Tenryuu’s words hit a small branch of thought. It was hard to find the words to put it into practice. ‘I mean, if that’s all that mattered, a tick in the mission box is pretty much all we’d have to account for, wouldn’t it?’

‘Admiralty would approve.’

You internally wince, feeling your eyepatch. A tell that you were racking your thoughts for conviction.

‘I think senseless waste is unwarranted whatever the situation.’ You offer, before catching yourself. That had been in favor of the opposite direction your argument was headed in. You try to backtrack however you can. ‘That’s efficiency at its purest.’

‘So a machine with emotions wouldn’t have much use in the context of judgment?’ She smiles enigmatically.

‘I never said that.’ You frown, wondering where she was taking the angle from. ‘Your question for me is if… simulating emotion was a waste of time for a fighter, a machine… a soldier – then if that were the case then, I’d agree.’ You could give yourself a pat on the back for coming up with that. ‘Simulation is pretentious. If you’re angry, you have the right to be angry, if you’re sad, then be sad… pretending to be something you’re not, putting an effort to be something that you think you don’t have a place in, there’s no place for that.’

‘So the solution… would be to stop.’

‘I never said that.’ You stop in your tracks, your thoughts collecting themselves once more. ‘Simulation is a waste – but I think emotion… emotion isn’t. I think… I do agree that simulation, pretending, is a waste. But if you can feel it, if the sadness, the anger… the happiness, if that’s genuine, then it’s not something to throw away.’

‘So if simulation is pretense… and someone was simulating… what is the value of the pretender?’

By that one question, you’re reminded that she is the most intelligent KanMusu in the Admiralty.

Let me move to my laptop so I can write better and draw a bit from my own experience...

"The introspection required to realize that one is simply simulating rather than feeling is valuable in and of itself. There's nothing inherently /wrong/ with pretending, but the waste comes from putting effort into putting up a front for others to interact with. Connection is incredibly important for any social being and if people can't connect with the real person behind the facade then it's a disservice to everyone involved."

What I'm basically thinking is pretending to be something is a self-perpetuating cycle. The more you be someone else and witness other people connect with that /other/ self that you aren't, the less you're going to care. Even if your real self isn't nice or pretty or normal both you and everyone around you deserve to interact with /that/ and not the facade.

Am I making sense?

What is a simulation but someone pretending? It could be argued that faking yourself in /incredibly/ human, but the Commander was just trying to make an arguement about life experience being more valuable than efficiency. I feel in this situation Tenryuu like other kanmusu are using the whole we dont feel, only simulate thing as an excuse, ill assume to keep her going after whatever losses she might have had before.

there is no way that such hatred is artificial
they DO feel, they ARE alive

Well, what you've done here is basically boiled down how we've created the Commander's entire modus operandi into a single post. What Tenryuu is talking about here is effectively directly relevent to how we've been treating our girls like people instead of machines of war.

It's hard to sum things up like this. Do you see where I'm trying to go with it?

If you can figure that out, get back to me. I'm done for the night.

>>
you might preted to be human now
but i seen the girls grow more human by the time
shigure's hate, takao sadness
with the interaction with us humans you are stoping to "merely" pretend to be human, and start being human
>>
>>1251355
>Write-In:
I do not know if I can say that for sure. But what makes humans, well humans is wanting to change. If genuine emotions are most value, want to change holds value too.

Humans can simulate emotions too lies is something simulated and masks is something we create to lessen the harms of these lies to ourselves

and with these masks we interact with other people with these same masks. In truth pretending is not a bad thing, but what is most value is what's is genuine to pretend is to want, is to want to change. The people in our division wants to change you know? Leia wants to help, Shigure feels anger, the carriers feel lust, Takao sadness and Yamato...

The point is that change is what makes someone human and pretending is part of being a human is.

‘Can I just say that… Isn’t that kind of thinking kind of… paradoxical?’ You frown, wondering if you’d used the right word. At Tenryuu’s silence, you feel like you’d used it in the right context, anyway – she didn’t correct you on your use of the word at this point.

‘Eh?’

You rub the back of your neck, kicking a pebble and letting out a hiss as you traipsed along. Tenryuu makes a confused face as the grunt of bewilderment escapes her, prompting you to hurry up with your answer. Your mind wanders back to your tryouts and the auditions… maybe if you told them back then that you were a pseudo-thinker with wisdom from the dustbin of a kitchen, you might have had a better chance of making it as a Commander by legitimate means.

A breath leaves you and you close your eyes, bracing yourself for the backlash.

‘Aren’t you setting yourself up for a loop to begin with?’

Tenryuu stops in her tracks. An answer look to leave her mouth… but only a grunt sounds. She closes a hand into a fist and brings it to her nose, shuffling her feet as she considers your thought. A minute or so passes by in this strange pattern until you realize that you had the advantage now… which wasn’t exactly an advantage as now it only presented an opportunity to prove just how bad you were at the whole thing. Still, even if you were wrong, you still had the right to take a shot.

‘You’re telling me that the valuation of an action is in its authenticity, but… what if it becomes part of you, even if it wasn’t in the first place?’ You sigh. As much as you believed it, you’re not sure if it was something that was so practical as an explanation. It was always easy for those who weren’t in the thick of it. ‘If you’re going to tell me that inherent valuation is in the course of an action is its… numerical value, that’s only giving yourself a return journey to the same damn thing, right?’

Like Tenryuu was.

‘Yeah, it would?’ She answers, crossing her arms under her breaths and regarding you. ‘But what would if it’s only logical for it to loop, then wouldn’t it be such to repeat?’

‘Sure. If you want it to be… I don’t think I can stop you from doing that.’

‘So you’re arguing that on the battlefield, such nuances would serve as a burden and unnecessary to combat efficiency.’

If words could turn into weapons, that would have been a rapier slashing you across the chest.

‘I’d like to think such nuances are what ultimately drives us to do what we do instead of being satisfied with our lot.’ You grimace. ‘Equating that desire as pretentious is just another way of throwing in the towel – in a logical situation the majority beats the minority every time if all other other factors remain equal; it’s a fundamental idea in economics, but it’s highly impractical. So if we go by numbers alone then we… wouldn’t bother struggling at all.’

TBC
>>
‘I’m not equating human desire to survive with a farcical front and its place in a situation on the front lines. They’re two wholly unrelated factors.’ The hiss is audible – you’d hit some sort of emotional root, ironically – it gives you the confidence to press on with your point.

If you were going to go down, you were going to go down guns blazing.

‘If human desire was logical then we would have just accepted our fates a long time ago.’ You bite your lip, wondering if such a leap was something you could argue. Tenryuu’s still eye, however, makes you press on. ‘You know… whoever Akatsuki was, I think… I think she was was asking you if it was appropriate at all for it to have a place out there for the numbers because I think… it would be easier to know you by designation over name.’ She looks uncomfortable at this point, looking away. ‘You’re not pretending to care out there – and I know, I know, human emotion has zero to little value on the battlefield and all that hoo-ha, but are you going to tell me a logical conclusion is ultimately what’s driving us?’

She pauses.

‘Ya lost me.’

You hadn’t. She never did.

But you can tell she was reluctant to accept you.

‘I’m rambling here, but if you’re asking me if being human is a burden out there, then, well… you’re welcome to think that.’ You scratch the top your head, wondering if there was such a thing as pushing too far. ‘But I won’t. I think that it’s a waste or anything like that.’ ‘I’m not going to go emotions are what makes us ultimately human or any cheesy stick like that, but… do I think that you should have that kind of capacity on the grounds of efficiency?’

She looks at you expectantly, her good eye shining with curiosity.

‘I do.’ You declare, your voice almost corny as you say it. ‘Because fuck efficiency and number crunching.’

Tenryuu pauses, staring at you dumbly… before bending over, clutching her gut.

She laughs for a good minute and change.

‘You do realize just how stupid you sound?’

‘I’m not being stupid.’ You grumble. ‘I’m being simple.’

For the first time in a long time – perhaps ever – she stares at you… stunned.

‘So even if you think that it’s pretentious, well, it’s there, isn’t it? You’re not lying to yourself that you felt glad that you and the team came home alive… or burst your gut out laughing when I do something stupid.’

She giggles into a fist, her expression softening as she finally looks away.

‘It’s not a waste.’

A smile reaches your features as a memory pops up.

You’ll be all right.

‘It’s just not something you write up on a piece of paper.’

Tenryuu chuckles as she clutches herself, nodding in your direction. She doesn’t agree with you, of course, not for one minute – the shine in her eye, however, told you that she at least understood enough to contemplate the point. There’s no gasp of realization or a cry of joy… but there is an unspoken promise to contemplate… and for now, for a man that was stuck in a kitchen just over two months ago against the smartest KanMusu on record, that was something you’d take.

‘So, uh, you like movies?’

Tenryuu tilts her head. The both of you turn a corner onto the main wide street. There were some civilians in the distance, standing by barrels and gathered rubble piles, eating their breakfast. To your right you make out two men carrying what appeared to be a glass pane – what they intended to do with it, you had no idea.

A few children run past you, carrying small packs of meals; some of them had the Army’s emblem on them while others had The Admiralty’s stamp. A teenager, mussed and in worn clothing, hails as he receives them.

‘Once in a while.’ She finally answers. ‘I mean, I had to set up the projector for the Destroyers whenever the others weren’t around, but… well, I don’t have a particular interest in ‘em, if that’s what you’re tryin’ to imply.’

‘I’m sure there are many people around the world that remember specific lines from specific movies and tell themselves they have no vested interest.’

The teenager, upon catching sight of you and Tenryuu, disappears inside one of the buildings before you can raise a hand in greeting.

‘When you’re out on night patrol with minimal sensor activity, a tooth monster coming out of a vent is less a horror movie and more of an anecdote.’ She shrugs. ‘Call it conditioning.’

You turn back to Tenryuu.

‘You’re saying that horror movies don’t scare you at all?’

‘It’d be stretching if I said that I wasn’t taken in once in a while, but… actual fear?’ She lets out a mirthless chuckle, wearing a bemused smirk. ‘You’re asking someone who knows that every time they step out there it’s going to be their last.’

That wasn’t entirely unreasonable.

‘What about other movies? Do you have a favorite?’

‘I’m more of a reader, really.’ Tenryuu stretches upwards. ‘But there are a few that stick out: The Castle Mobius, The Impossible Job, The Thief’s Confession… yeah, I think that’s it.’

‘You like crime mysteries?’

‘I think they’re okay.’

‘I like noir crime, so I can tell where you’re coming from.’

‘You didn’t strike me as the type.’

You’re actually offended by that. You’d always been a patron of a good mystery – of course you hadn’t actively sought out the genre, but going down to the local market and picking one up for an hour’s pay? That you could do.

‘I read, you know.’ You roll your eyes as the both of you cross another street. ‘Books get expensive, but pulp? That’s a monthly pleasure.’ You hear a loud, booming sound behind you and throw a glance over your shoulder – several workers had set a block of concrete down with what appeared to be a mini-crane. After realizing that you’d come to a stop… you get back to moving again. ‘And it’s not like there’s a lack of good crime films out there.’

She scrunches her lips.

‘I suppose.’

‘You’re not surprising me with your choice of genre, though.’ You chuckle. Indeed, it wasn’t out of imagination for Tenryuu to be interested in murder mysteries or detective stories. As boisterous as she was, a smart one; and the smart ones with a little ego always liked a chance to match wits… and win. ‘I kind of pegged you for one or the other if you were ever a reader.’

You knew someone who was borderline insufferable when it came to their superiority.

You’re just glad Tenryuu somehow made it look charming.

‘The other?’

‘Science fiction.’

She regards you flatly.

‘Isn’t that pretty niche?’ She kicks a rock along the road, humming.

The both of you get lost in conversation, discussing merits and drawbacks of certain films and publications. Tenryuu wasn’t lying that it wasn’t of particular interest to her, but she did show the courtesy to accommodate your enthusiasm for the subject; she wasn’t big as a reader, even if she had surprise. You suppose that that had to do with nature of her task; Tenryuu mentions that she liked to keep herself busy more than dive into something to merely pass the time; her being intelligent didn’t have bearing on her interests, of course, but her past schedule, prior to and after joining your Division, didn’t leave much for her to pick up a hobby outside of a few fleeting dives into discarded magazines. It seemed like nothing interested her enough to fall into categorical interest in general media.

Before you know it… you’d arrived.

The town center is bustling – and by bustling you mean bustling. Maintenance crew, civilians and Army men – not to mention the mix of MPs from both sides, were present. The Army had set up a sort of requisition tent of their own here – one that the civilians could visit to procure their own supplies before stepping anywhere near the sea. The town hall is still in the middle of reconstruction and…

‘Tenryuu-chan!’

A silver-haired girl runs towards you, hands up.

‘Kashima?’

She was dressed… oddly. She looked like belonged in a Commodore’s ballroom rather than out here with the grumbling, impatient masses. Wavy, curly silver hair tied in twin-tails and a hat much too small for her head – not to mention the fluttering skirt that didn’t go with the ensemble at all. It was as though you were looking at some insane student’s mix of an old female sailor half of wear mashed with an even older-fashioned formal Naval jacket, complete with epaulettes.

The young woman stood out like purple in a sea of green.

Tenryuu regards her flatly – even with her radiating cheer. The two must have been friends… but even with that, you hadn’t seen her before. She was more likely than not, a KanMusu – but there was an oddity about her, a strangeness that you locked on. You can’t quite tell what it is, but as eager and spirited as she was, there was something definitely off about her presence.

‘They assigned you here?’ Tenryuu frowns, eyeing the silver-haired young woman.

‘They had enough people running the night patrols, so… so here I am.’ She laughs nervously, scratching the back of her head. Tenryuu’s frown turns into a bemused shake of her head as she regards the shorter woman. ‘It’s a little harder than I – !’

She catches sight of you and her eyes instantly light up.

‘Are you showing this gentleman around?’ She eyes you, wearing a cheerful, accommodating smile as she folds her hands over her dress. ‘Is there anyone that you’re looking for, sir?’

‘No, that’s – !’

‘This is the First Operations Division’s Commander, Kashima.’ Tenryuu gestures to you. ‘My Commander.’

‘O – Oh!’ She takes a step back… bowing repeatedly in apology. ‘My apologies, sir!’

‘It’s quite all right.’ You feel a little uncomfortable. The motions may not have been big, but the display of it was catching some attention you could totally do without. You lean towards Tenryuu’s ear, your voice lowered to a whisper, ‘Do you know her?’

‘Kashima was Ooyodo’s number two before the attack… and before that, she was put under my wing for her acclimatization period.’ Tenryuu reveals, almost fondly. ‘She’s a little… out there and a little too nice for her own good, but, well, she’s…’

Tenryuu pauses, turning to the puzzled Kashima.

‘Hey, what are your good points again?’

Tenryuu-chan!

She puffs her cheeks, glaring… only for Tenryuu raise her hand and put it on her head, that fond smile returning.

‘I’m glad to see you’re back out there.’

She twiddles her thumbs, looking downwards, embarrassed at Tenryuu’s gesture of affection… before her name is called by one of the men in army fatigues with a crate balanced on his shoulder.

She leaves as quickly as she arrived.

‘You got questions.’

‘Let me guess.’ Tenryuu starts, making you shut your mouth before you’re able to get a word out. ‘You felt something was off about her?’

‘How’d you know?’

‘Well, you’re a Commander,’ she eyes Kashima, who was happily accepting what appeared to be a small barrel – a steel keg – from the man who had called for her, ‘and she’s not particularly good at hiding it anyway.’

‘What?’

‘Kashima sustained critical damage on a patrol four months ago… the specialists and Akashi tried to do what they could, but this was the best that they can come up with.’ You frown, wondering what Tenryuu was getting at. Was there some kind of magical alarm that set her off whenever she was near a Commander or an Admiral? ‘Physical injuries are nothing if the trauma is manageable… but Kashima, she… she sustained damage to her core. The kind that isn’t recoverable.’

Your lips tighten as you watch Kashima gesture for some civilians to follow her, now carrying a crate in addition to the small barrel.

‘Something like Yamato?’

‘Something like that… Yamato’s core isn’t bleeding, though.’

Bleeding?

‘That’s why you felt something off.’ Tenryuu answers, her tone neutral. ‘We can sense the leaking magic from her – from her core. KanMusu cores are what keeps us here – in one piece. We don’t need to breathe as much as you do, we don’t need to eat… but a damaged core? That does things – fatigue, pain… and they take time, but they’re usually recoverable. Kashima, by all rights… she should have sunk in the sea. Her core took a direct hit when she was running a mission.’ She looks downward, her expression stoic. ‘It was supposed to be routine but… an I-Class got a lucky hit. Her core expanded all it could to keep her running, but the damage that she took would’ve sunk anyone else. We were kind of…’ she lets out a mirthless chortle, ‘just counting the days but, but, well…’

She bites her lip.

‘I guess we’re… still counting.’

‘Why is she still going out there, then? Shouldn’t she be in a bed or something?’ You question, bewildered. ‘The Admiral wouldn’t – !’

‘She’s stubborn as can be.’ Tenryuu lets out tiredly, gesturing for you to follow. She gives one last look at her friend – as do you – before starting towards the building. ‘But… well, by Admiralty definitions, she’s still combat capable against all reasonable doubt, which she keeps telling us whenever we want to strap her down in Akashi’s… and, well…’

The both you have a foot on the stairs to the Hall. Tenryuu turns to Kashima’s spot in the distance, enthusiastically throwing things like some kindergarten teacher throwing out prizes, the very picture of joy.

‘I guess sometimes all someone can hope for is a good death, right?’

Her smile doesn’t reach her eyes.

‘Life isn’t that hard to look forward to, you know?’

Tenryuu keeps silent.

You put your hand on the door.

‘Coming with?’

She shakes her head, turning back to Kashima and her enthusiastic display.

‘I think that I’d like to stay out here if possible, sir.’

‘All right. If you need anything just…’

She nods, offering you a tight – but honest – smile of her own.

You enter the Hall to see a different display – the walls had been patched up and the stairs were fully restored, the windows now all in their rightful place. There were still white spots on the marble floor, however, where there should have been grey and black – the restoration work hadn’t quite covered all its bases yet but there didn’t seem to be any danger of the ceiling coming down on you. In the middle there was a work desk and several old office chairs in varying states of wear and tear. There was a stepladder lying on its side and a large ornamental pot that had a large crack through the middle.

The last time you had been here you had a bigger gut and a set of normal eyes.

It was amazing how a month and change… could change a man.

A feeling of nostalgia comes over you. You enter a familiar corridor, your prosthetic pressing against the recently-painted walls – there was hardly a soul in here. The windows, now fully-refurbished, allowed you a glimpse into the outside world… where the masses were waiting for their turn. It was still early; there was still a little bit of time before anyone else would be –

‘Commander. You’re early.’

You find the Vice-Admiral, clad in a battered Air Force jacket and jeans, sitting on the floor like a delinquent, his legs stretched out and a lollipop in his mouth as he surveyed you. You offer him a rigid salute – one that he waves off with a casual swipe of his hand, the back of his head making audible contact with the wall.

‘So are you, if I may say so, sir.’

He grunts, diving into his pockets and pulling out a…

‘Lollipop?’

It was lemon-flavored. You decide to give it a pass.

‘No thanks.’

He tilts his head, tucking it into his front pocket.

‘So I saw you and your Sub-Commander playing sweet sunset yesterday evening.’ Your back stiffens as his smirk makes itself apparent. Perhaps it had been a bad idea for that sort of display – especially with the Submarine around. ‘I’m the last guy qualified to give you advice, but shouldn’t you be taking it slow with everything falling down on us?’

‘I’m sorry.’

He barks.

‘Don’t be.’ He snorts, taking the stick from his mouth, now vacant of its sweet… and flicking it down the Hall. ‘We’re only human.’

‘I don’t know if you know this… but I hired Loudmouth to do some work on-base.’ The Vice-Admiral, if he showed any disdain for your action, didn’t show it. He looks straight on ahead as you lean against the wall, completely still. ‘She’s serving as my Division’s Combat Instructor.’

A sound… and a grimace tells you that he is indeed still listening.

‘That’s a development if I ever heard one.’ He groans, pinching the bridge of his nose. ‘You don’t think that it’s mighty suspicious that she’d drop herself down from an Ops Team for contracted work?’

Of course it did.

But you were hardly one to turn away anything that would help – especially considering the state of your operations.

‘It did feel a little… off, yeah.’ You admit, sliding into a crouch, distantly gazing into the chaos outside. ‘But according to her, the Ops Team was dishonorably discharged – she didn’t have much else to offer and came here. I thought that I… at least owed her a chance after all she did for us, so…’

Damn.

Silence reigns for a good while between the both of you. You’re not sure if The Vice-Admiral’s contemplating whether to deck you or if his mind is off somewhere else. He probably didn’t have time to lend you an ear like this, anyway.

‘Has she checked in with Ooyodo or Yuubari?’ He answers, quite suddenly.

You remember the forms you filled in the other day.

‘I think she’ll be doing that today.’

Finally, he lets out a sigh, pushing himself back onto his feet and dusting himself off.

‘Well, I’m not going to pat you on the back and say that it was a good decision, if that’s what you’re looking for.’ He answers. You nod in return; you hadn’t expected anything of the sort anyway.

‘Not at all.’ You cross your legs, getting comfortable as your back found surprising comfort against the wall. ‘I just thought that after what we went through… that the courtesy’s at least warranted from my end.’

He lets out a bemused chuckle, sucking hard on his little loli.

‘Traditionalist to the end, huh?’ You hear him roll it in his mouth. ‘Thought you were a bit of a bad boy before you signed on.’

You let out a chuckle of your own. It was a nice thought: you, the rambunctious rebel that played by your own rules.

‘If any of the dogs are watching this, they’ll be in flames.’ He grunts, letting out a breath. ‘If the discharge happened… it would’ve been a lamb in lieu of the Count who ordered it.’ He clicks his tongue again. ‘Not to mention the politics.’

>‘Since when did we care about politics? We’re in this to win it, aren’t we?’

‘Since when did we care about politics?’ You frown, scrutinizing the Vice-Admiral’s features. ‘We’re in this to win it, aren’t we?’

He doesn’t reply – you hear a crunch from his mouth… and him withdrawing all that remained from his candy: the stick.

‘I wonder.’

More silence reigns between the both of you. As the time passes by, the bustle of the outside world becomes nothing more than white noise – your thoughts stray… what had The Admiral called the both of you here for? There hadn’t been a warning, nor had there been anything describing it as any more than a casual meeting, yet… the somber mood that had suddenly taken over told you there was something that was more to this than meets the eye. The Admiral hadn’t been one for formality on a twenty-four-seven basis… but neither do you think he would have called for the both of you if it wasn’t something that needed both your attentions – both your undivided attentions.

You get to your feet. If you were going to ponder anymore than you had, you figured that you would go insane.

‘I’ll be heading back into the main hall.’ You rub your neck, casting a look outside. The clouds must have gone – it was a lot sunnier outside compared to before. ‘See if The Admiral’s arrived yet.’

‘I’ll join you.’ He stretches.

The both of you make your way back into the corridor… where you’re greeted by a sight that neither of you expected.

‘Oh, there’s someone here.’ A familiar voice; melodious.

The look of disdain was very uncharacteristic to your usual perception of her. Clad in a thin pink jacket and a striped shirt, she had the look of a mother that was waiting for a turn to give a teacher a piece of her mind. You’d seen her before, here and there… television, posters, tours…

This was her. This was Kongou.

‘Miss Kongou.’ It was all you could manage, so shocked were you at her presence.

‘Eh? Have we met before?’ She blinks, leaning over and giving you a curious look. She rubs her chin, giving your eyepatch a good stare before it traveled to your prosthetic exoskeleton. ‘I think I’d remember – !’

She leans to her left to get a better glimpse of what was behind you; her look of disdain returns.

‘Oh, it’s you.

‘Kongou.’ The Vice-Admiral nods neutrally. If he showed any disapproval of her presence, he didn’t show it. ‘Decided to pay a visit?’

Hardly.’ She snaps. You see her teeth bare for a split second, before she crosses her arms across her chest and look away. ‘Besides, what’s the issue even if I did?'

The Vice-Admiral stares at her for a while… before letting out a snort and giving a bow.

‘That is your business, I suppose.’

She turns purple.

To your horror, you thought it brought out the color in her eyes.

‘Whatever scuffle the both of you have with each other… this isn’t the time or place to settle it.’ You decide to nip this romance – if that was what it could be called, anyway – in the bud. Whatever it was, the three of you were still assets to the organization… and you’re loathe to think how it would look if anyone caught the two of them engaged in something as trivial as this.

The Vice-Admiral looks away, crossing his arms in a manner that reminded you of a scolded teenage girl. Kongou scowls – and in the process shatters practically half of your admiration for her – as she mimics his movements, letting out a huff – which sounded more like a squeak – for good measure.

‘I didn’t even plan to have this little kerfuffle, anyway.’

‘You’re not on my to-do list either.’

You groan, pinching the bridge of your nose. Perhaps it would be more beneficial for them to just go at it on the table. You could afford to leave for ten minutes and come back with tissues.

‘Quit it. The both of you.’ As insubordinate as it was… you really didn’t feel like tending to these two.

Fine.’ Kongou replies icily, giving you the evil eye. ‘Let him hide behind your skirt. See if I care.’

You let out a tired sigh. Perhaps it would have been better if she’d stayed a dream on a stage spouting cliches.

‘I don’t care that you care, to be honest, Miss Kongou… but I’d be loathe to think that The Admiral would want to play witness to a pair of bickering, ranked Officers when he gets here.’ You almost feel horrible taking the superior tone with her – but your reluctance at dealing with this, pushing to divert the topic from their personal bickering. ‘He called you here, right? Can’t think of any other reason that you’d be called down to Yokosuka.’

She blinks, evidently surprised.

‘I was.’ She admits, sighing and paying full attention to you now. ‘And – wait a minute, who are you anyway?’

‘Commander of the Yokosuka First Operations Division.’ You give a small bow.

Her eyes widen.

You’re Naga – ?’

She’s interrupted by the sound of swinging doors… and the reveal of four figures in ceremonial warrior armor, complete with blades and weaponry, marching in. They wore masks of varied design and color, but all of them showcased rage and aggression, glaring at whoever dared to stare back.

These were The Congregation’s Defenders.

The Admiral walks up from behind them,

‘All of you are here on time.’ He takes off his hat, offering an apologetic smile. ‘I’m sorry for the short notice, but… well, it’s been a long night.’ You notice that the apology is more directed toward Kongou than either one of you.

A man in black walks up the stairs and past The Admiral, bowing regally.

It was the Count of Tohno.

'Are they trustworthy?'

The Admiral merely grins.

Five hours.

That was how long you had been in this room with the four – no, eight – other occupants. On the flat table were laid out several blueprints and copies of paper from various levels of security, from almost every known branch – and a few unknown ones – of The Admiralty’s dealings with The Taiyouga military. Many of the papers were blacked out – and the readable ones had less detail on them than a cookbook for beginners. Against the wall, The Congregation’s Defenders stood, stiff and rigid as though they were statues as their charge – their Master – The Count of Tohno, folded his hands as dead eyes looked on ahead across the table to the tired smirk of the The Admiral. Cups were strewn everywhere and the dry heat of the room had Kongou discard her jacket and had her shirt unbuttoned, heels on the table.

The Vice-Admiral and you, on one side of the table, watched the proceedings with mixed feelings of impatience and annoyance.

‘It would seem that, once again… we are back where we started.’ The Count announces solemnly. ‘We neither have the evidence to act against the notion nor do we have the resources to stop it ourselves… and pay the price of obliteration if we do.’

You let out a sigh, wondering how things had become this bad.

‘Haszad won’t relent in their pursuit of this. They have been pushing for their terms of entry into The Alliance since its establishment.’ The Admiral folds his hands in front of his face, wearing a sarcastic grin. ‘Now they actually have some leverage. Or so they think.’

You eye one particular file on the table; you know what’s under it.

You couldn’t bear to to see Yamato and Musashi’s tortured faces again.

But it had only been the tip of the iceberg.

Haszad had other things – other plans and understandings, as they called them – to strive towards a mutual good for humanity.

Now, with the advancements they had made… they were planning to dangle a carrot for Taiyouga – and by association, what was left of The Admiralty – along with it. After all, it was simple: an avenue that was proven to give nothing more than a stalemate, mathematically, was not an avenue worth further consideration. According to Kongou, while the files only reached back since the attack, the behind-the-scenes chatter was much more active; The Count, The Admiral’s ally of sorts – to your understanding – had affirmed this.

It was a whole new stage to an already-crowded play.

‘So, Commander, you’ve been quite silent the last few hours…’

>‘Count, is there a reason you’re telling us all this?’
>‘I joined The Admiralty because I wanted to help defend us against the Abyssals. Not involve myself in petty squabbles.’

Ahh. It wasn't exactly clear to me. I had assumed their negotiations previously had relied on the presence of Yamato and Musashi.

I'm still interested in what they think is worthwhile enough to gain inclusion in the alliance. Not that I can change my vote, anyway.

I already described Haszad and their position from way back when. This is less a revelation of information and more a progress report.
>>
>>1263137

Our collective intelligence is very low. There'll always be something asking about something and we will forget stuff.
>>
>>1263133
the tech they offer is not as good as they think it is if im right, weaker kantai steel (the girls get shoot up easy with normal kantai steel, imagine the shitty one)
also the tech seems human focused, not shipgirl foucsed
and as is shipgirls are the ones keeping the figth
>>
>>1263133
The Discord discussion made a possible point in saying that their tech is useless. We've encountered it directly (Senator's kantai steel prostheses) and so far it isn't anything the Admiralty doesn't already have. Although this doesn't mention the possibility that they DO have kanmusu-focused data that the Admiralty doesn't know about.
>>
Also I am having a bout of food poisoning and am on my throne and phone. So expect stuff to be sporadic.

Word to the wise: don't spray aerosol in the same room you're eating in.
>>
>>1263143
>>1263145

There is point that if the faux kantai steel can be applied to anyone, you might be able to raise a fucking huge army of normal folks with weak kanmusu abilities.

Quantity does have a quality all of its own and that might possibly turn the tide of the war. Much like how superior production ability won the allies ww2.

Of course it won't matter if they can take out the princesses anyways.
>>
>>1263148
normal full power shipgirls have an ass of a time with "mere" onis
you bet that quantyty wont do here
>>
>>1263148
Lets not forget that what the Senator had was trashed by our own prosthetic
And our own prosthetic was like a gentle touch against the Ta Class we tried to punch
If they have nothing better than our human kantai steel stuff then its all pointless
>>
>>1263148
The problem there is that we, a fat slob reject of the Admiralty, managed to beat the Senator. This does not speak well about their kantai steel tech, not to mention the still existing relative rarity of people who won't outright reject the prostheses. And insofar, none of our kantai steel stuff has ever worked out against actual Abyssal units, so the possibility of humans directly combating Abyssals is still a pipe dream.
>>
>>1263115
>>‘Is this a political maneuver or a genuine effort?’
>>
>>1263148
At what cost? Hazsad pillaged their steel. While the Admiralty might prefer to consider the kanmusu nothing but tools, only a fool would consider such a tactic. Hazsad's information is useless without a less damaging manner of... harvest.

Not to mention that the quantity you'd need to fuel a war engine would be sufficient to KO all of our kanmusu multiple times over, I suspect.
>>
>>1263149

Not by themselves no but shipgirls supported by squadrons of augmented human might have a better chance I'm guessing? They'll run interference and put down lots of smoke, etc.

>>1263152
>>1263153

Aye, so it can't really stand up against proper kantai steel, thats a given. But can it dish it out at long range. This is just the prosthetic we're talking about. I'm curious if the documents show that they have some kind of prototype for weaponry based off sushi and yams. Will that be able to inflict hurt while not being able to take it? Disposable weapons that can be mass produced can drown enemy abyssal units. Of course, this won't matter if they havnt figured out a way to make sure these prosthetic have a much better compatibility rating so as to be fitted with most everyone.

I still don't like them but I am being the devils advocate to make sure we don't miss anything.
>>
>>1263115

‘Is this a political maneuver or a genuine effort?’

The Admiral and The Count stare at you dumbly… before the latter bellows, clutching his chest.

‘Deeds fulfilled allow for more faith than mere promises.’ He begins, raising his hands as though in prayer. ‘Politically, young man, activity has been a rudimentary placebo for action and execution. The same has – and will – applied throughout the history of humanity. However, promises are rarely supported by their fulfillment… what they are doing here is to garner a precedent that would allow them more influence.’ He wears a confident smirk. ‘So if you’re asking me… I’d say it could very well be both – rare as the occurrence is. A promise backed by action and words.’

Kongou hums audibly.

‘I don’t get it.’ She starts, getting everyone’s attention. ‘If you’re saying that they’re actually trying to move to end the war… as unscrupulous as it is, shouldn’t you be helping them push this through?’ She unbuttons her shirt a little more, glaring through one eye. ‘This is your survival that they’re pushing on.’

‘Kongou… there’s no guarantee on their part that this plan will work.’ The Admiral sighs. ‘The traffic’s one way, whichever way you look at it.’

‘I’m saying that we shouldn’t turn away a little help.’ She elaborates further. ‘You told me to gather what I could… and I can’t actually find anything wrong with what they’re trying to do.’ She bites her lip, getting to her feet. ‘Yamato and Musashi’s incident aside, maybe a little faith in their intentions would help us understand things better.’

‘I agree.’

The four of you turn to the source of the voice.

‘Count?’

‘Any help would be a tremendous boon to the war efforts. Supplies for you and your fellow KanMusu have spread the Former Empire thin; we are not sure how long we would be able to last without Haszad’s help.’ ‘However… the question remains on the issue of trust.’ He places his elbows on the table. ‘Not of Haszad alone… but The Congregation and the branches on the revelation of that knowledge. If things are as they are, then even the remaining Shamans under our care would be rendered ineffective. The Admiralty is a body of agency – and from what you’re telling me any further prodding would have us relinquish The Fairies, effectively, to the administration of the Congregation.’

The Vice-Admiral flicks a stick across the room… and into a bin.

‘The Fairies were stupid enough to see us as a race that was worth seeing a better tomorrow for – violating their trust… even on a technicality by getting The Shamans on board… I can’t say that I support that kind of thinking.’ He turns to The Admiral, still wearing a stoic expression. ‘You know me, Admiral, I’m a soldier through-and-through… so yeah, this ain’t going somewhere I’m willing to hitch.’

He nods.

‘Commander?’

The way I see it, Haszad has already shown what they're willing to do by kidnapping and torturing Yamato and Musashi. ‘I’m actually more curious about one thing above all else, sir…’ You fix your gaze upon the still Count, who raises an interested eyebrow at you. ‘Your Grace, I actually find it odd that you’d be discussing this with us of all things.’ You hesitate a little, pushing yourself to go on. ‘Personally, I find it quite… surprising, considering the measure of influence that you personally hold, never mind what you stand to gain if this deal goes through, either way.’

Kongou and The Vice-Admiral watch you, their eyes wide.

‘I suppose… what I’m asking, in total respect and deference, Your Grace… why consult us when you’d benefit from this by staying on the sidelines, anyway?’

The Count snickers… chortles… before engaging in full-blown laughter, thoroughly amused by your inquiry.

‘Interesting, young man – you question my own motives despite my own deference of consultation to your end?’

You let out a breath, clutching your knees.

It would be foolish of anyone to step into the home of a host without knowing whether he intends to serve you bread and women or merely use it to mask the scent of the viper he has under your pillow.

Four blades are in your face, along with the masked glares of the four Defenders, ready to decapitate you on command.

‘I’m just… trying to make a point. I didn’t mean any offense… by it.’

The Count lets out another amused chuckle.

Kongou and the rest of the room were out of their chairs, already read for trouble.

‘Leave him be.’ He commands. They comply. ‘I suppose any man worth his salt would be on his guard in these dark times… and I do suppose that not sharing in my own intentions would be rude when stark opposition and support are so black and white.’ he shrugs, defeated. ‘Very well, then… I guess what you can describe my intentions are… that I would like to stand on my two feet rather than be brought to heel so forcefully; be it by the hand of the Congregation, the middling politics of Haszad and the Lords… or even your Admiralty.’

‘So you’re in this for yourself?’ You make a face, playing with your collar. You wonder if you were being a bit too rude. ‘I… don’t see much to gain, honestly.’

He wears an enigmatic – and thoroughly dangerous – smile.

‘Independence is man’s greatest gift. For it to choose and deem what is good or evil is all down to their decision – in helping you, I am merely affirming my belief in my own practices; putting my money where my mouth is.’ He taps the table. ‘Admittedly, I’d make a poor noble if I was so brazen of my views, and the irony and hypocrisy of the subterfuge is not lost on me, so you can say that… I like to see things stand on their own without the interference of those who have no restraint of their own.

The Count nods one last time.

‘I hope that conveys how I feel about this to you, Commander.’

You look downwards, feeling all eyes on you. A small part of you wished that you hadn’t dreamt about joining The Admiralty… then you wouldn’t have been put on the spotlight like this. There was no part of you that would have conjured having an audience to a Count, even in your wildest dreams; and certainly not in a meeting mired in conspiracy.

‘With everything that Haszad’s done… I think it’s obvious that they’re on the same page as The Admiralty when it comes to the price that they’re willing to take. I’d even argue that they’d be willing to even take that extra mile, but… side with them?’ You hesitate, trying to sound as controlled as possible. ‘People are desperate – I don’t think anyone isn’t, given how long this slog’s been going… and when people are desperate, they turn to the first thing that they think will make all the problems go away… no matter how dangerous it sounds.’

A rumble of laughter sounds from his throat.

‘So your notion is caution.’ He eyes you curiously. ‘You don’t trust them to keep their hands steady for long?’

You shake your head.

‘Not in the least, Your Grace.’

‘I see.’ He pauses for a moment, turning his attention to the equally-stoic features of The Admiral. ‘I think that we’ve delegated enough here. If anything else comes up… well, you’ll be the first to know, Admiral.’

‘Of course, Count.’ The Admiral bends over into a slow, respectful bow. ‘And again, I’d like to apologize for the trouble that you’ve faced in your assistance with the matter of Haszad. Thank you very much for your support.’

A rumble of amusement escapes him as he gets to his feet, dusting off his black undershirt.

‘There’s no need, old friend.’ A ghost of a smile comes upon his features as he makes his way to the door – one of the Defenders opens it for him. ‘If there’s anything else you need, well, you know where to find me.’

As he leaves… The Admiral turns to you.

‘That’s it for now, Commander.’ You break into a salute. ‘And this little meeting, well… it was just a talk about coffee and asking for extra funds. It didn’t go anywhere past a few laughs… and no more than two mugs.’

The Vice-Admiral snorts, placing his feet on the table.

‘Vice-Admiral, if you have a moment…’

You exit the room, entering the corridor leading to the balcony overlooking the main hall. Taking strides towards the balcony you arrive at the edge when The Count throws a playful salute before disappearing behind the lumbering, armored forms of The Defenders. You give a rigid one in return, slow as it is; Tenryuu must have been sick waiting for you by now; you decide to go look for her – she probably hadn’t expected you to be gone so long.

The click-clack of heels catches your attention… and you turn around to see Kongou’s welcoming smirk.

‘Hey, Commander. You free to show a girl around?’

As humorous as it would be to dump spaghetti everywhere, we should at least try to act like a commander.
>>
>>1263905
the Dice Gods say spaghetti must spilled
>>
>>1263911
we will have time for that back in base
>>
>>1263893
Does the tag along option mean ditching Tenryuu?
>>
>>1263886
>‘I’m sorry Miss Kongou, but I already have plans for the day.’ (Politely decline her offer)
We have Tenryuu already, let's not be assholes to her.

>>1263923
No.

>>1263940
Oh guess it's safe then.

Well, Tenryuu did decide to ditch us for Kashima first
>>
>>1263962
Yeah, but she didn't make us wait for 5 hours.
>>
>>1263967
pretty sure she knew something important was happening when the Admiral arrived with the Count

RESIST THE URGE TO SPAGHETTI. RESIST.

But anyway I was wondering just how many of you guys do or don't think we should work with Haszad at all?

In my mind it's pretty obvious that the war has gotten to the point that we /need/ them, even if we can't trust them to not do shady shit behind our backs. But considering that our own Admiralty was doing almost identical stuff... can we really refuse to work with a country that makes no bones about doing the same?
>>
>>1264605
i do not trust them even one bit
they think they have the man power and the land to not be affected by the abyss, they dismiss it as "mere annoyance"
and as the imps changing and becoming usefull in-quest, i would bet my ass that the abyss would be able to go inland if they finish up all the coast of the world

even if they have the tech and supplies they are too areogant to be helpfull in any meaningfull way

or so i think
>>
>>1264605
I think they have ambitions far more sinister and long-term than merely winning the war with the Abyssals. They want an army equipped with magitek weapons. Think about it, the Senator's gauntlets were useless against our prosthetic, and they'd be even more useless against any abyssal, but I'd imagine they could shred conventional steel. They aren't planning on fighting abyssals with their inferior, knock-off magitek, they're planning on using it for conventional warfare against human targets.
>>
>>1264710
also if the fairies get the wind of that, we WILL lose the one unconditional support we have
then we get extict

Katori-Sensei and Kashima-Shishou’s Docking Extravaganza

KASHIMA!
‘Katori-nee! LEGGO!
‘Why?! Why didn’t you tell me that you were dying?! Why is the world so cruel, why?!’
‘Nee… chan… I’m – not – dying!’
‘B – But Tenryuu said…’
‘It’s the Quest, you know, it’s the Quest!’
‘So… you’re not going to die?’
‘Not anytime… soon…’
KASHIMA!
‘NEE-CHAN! THE SHOW!’
‘Ah, that’s right. Today we’ll be discussing the hierarchy of the Congregation. It’s straight out ripped off from Game of Thrones.’
Please don’t bring any legal trouble onto the DM, Nee-san…
‘The Congregation is made up of 13 Lords: 8 From Upper Houses and 5 from Lower Houses. The difference between the Houses from both echelons is simple – size and influence. A House isn’t so much a family as it is a clan or organization – by Imperial Law, The Upper Houses are exempted from expulsion from the Congregation Table unless under very select circumstances!’
‘The last time a public expulsion – not a voluntary withdrawal was made, it was by a unanimous vote almost two centuries ago! Lower Houses come and go by their contribution to the Congregation – if the Table decides that their influence is waning or unable to pay their duties as a member of The Congregation, a vote must be taken, but each House has a different number of votes; some have more than others, some have less.’
‘How many Counts are there, then, Kashima?’
‘There are a total of 31 Counts throughout Taiyouga. This is a number that has been kept constant for the last 70 years. In addition, a Count isn’t necessarily a family member of a House, but a person that has been awarded that nobility. 6 of the 8 Upper Houses, however, have never deviated from the practice of awarding the title of Count to their heirs-apparent. They have all advanced from Count to Lord.’
‘Well, that’s it for now. I’m KATORI.’
‘And I’m… KASHIMA!’

SAYONARA!

Those are the true degenerates.

I'm really hoping Kongou doesn't try to look for a "replacement" or something, not sure if people nor the dice can resist
