It’s time to clean up the mess you made! Even if it was an accident…

Of course I’m referring to the fact Silver Grin, the retired old man whose part time job was leaving people to their doom, went flying (and eventually crashed) after you violently stopped the wagon you three were riding. Your friend Gretchen, who is in the back, didn’t give a single fuck and kept on sleeping.

The guy is most certainly dead! He was at least 30 feet in the air before starting to fall down!

What are you going to do? You’re close to the main gates of Aliheath, the town you live in; you’re pretty sure nobody but yourself witnesses the dead of the very grumpy old man… Maybe you can get yourself out of this...

>Go and search for the body! No corpse, no murder!
>Go to the main gates, explain the situation to the guards and receive the punishment you deserve.
>Lie to the guards in the main gate saying you found this Horse Wagon empty in the middle of the road.
>Take Gretchen out of the wagon and walk to the main gate with her. Pretend nothing happened.

Seeing as we can't be 100% sure he's dead, we should go check on that.
Possibly doing so without being seen (keep ourselves low within the bushes, dart from cover to cover etc.)

While we do so, we should decide what we will do afterwards.

In my opinion, whether he's dead or not, we should call for the guards and explain what happened. That is to say, our version of what happened: that he'd tried to kidnap us and Gretchen but we broke loose and tied him up.
However, while we were returning to town, he tried to get to the front and kick us off. In the commotion, we got the cart to stop and he went flying.

Well! Time to search for the corpse! But you will be sneaky just in case. You pet the horses and told them to stay still while you’re gone. Also you tell Gretchen you’re going:

“ph… ph… ph…” She’s still sucking her thumb.

You try to not be seen, bushes, shadows, trees, everything around you becomes your ally. To be honest, you look quite silly! But no one can see you…

Your sleek movement finally pays off and you clearly see what’s left of Silver Grin. Tough guy, he’s in one piece… and he’s not breathing. I think this was it for him. Poor guy. Time to tell the authorities… maybe.

What are you going to do?

>Tell the guards about what really happened. Silver Grin needs a place to rest in peace and you to pay for what you done.
>Tell the guards about your version of the events. Lie to them, Silver Grin tried to kidnap you and Gretchen, you broke free and… the rest is history.
>Leave him there, who cares? Maybe take his teeths...

Not breathing? Are we making that call from a distance? Or are we close to the body?
If we are close enough (or can get close enough without being seen) check for a pulse.

If none is felt (or if we can't check without getting to the body), then proceed with

>Tell the guards about your version of the events.

But first, wake Gretchen the fuck up. Slap her if necessary. We need her to understand how serious the situation is and to at least make a genuine attempt at acting the part of the victim, not someone who's calmly sleeping the day off.

If she can't pull it off decently we'll claim she's still in shock.

Incidentally, the prompts keep referring to "what we did". We didn't do much. The only thing we can be considered guilty of was leaving ol' Silver tied up.
Kidnapping him? Gretchen did that. Tieing him up? Gretchen did that. Leaving the reins to someone who didn't know how to drive a cart and falling asleep? Gretchen did that.
But the biggest responsible for this death? Silver shit for refusing to tell us how to properly stop the carriage and stupidly sticking himself out as we were trying to do so.

Nora genuinely does not have much to own up to. What we're really doing here is covering up our best friend's crime, not our own (even if choosing not to untie Silver made us accomplices, however unenthusiastic ones).

(I’m deeply sorry, guys. Something unexpected came up so I couldn’t reply earlier. We will continue tomorrow full time.)

You got closer to make sure Silver Grin is really dead, you move his body and hear his bones cracking, you put your ear in his chest, not one heartbeat, he’s really dead. Wow, two deaths in the last two days, what a track record…

Not wanting to touch the corpse anymore, you went back to the carriage, where Gretchen is at. You try to wake her up.

“Zzz…zZzzz…” She’s not responding. You take her out and slap her in the cheek. “AAaa… W-why?” She rubs her cheek; she’s in the verge of tears.

“I need you to wake up! Silver Grin is really dead!”

“W-what? I thought that was only a beautiful dream!”

“Dream? This is a nightmare! We have to deal with him.”

“Okay, jokes are over. Tell me what happened…” She looks concerned.

You explained what happened.

“God dammit, god dammit! It’s all my fault…” She scratches her head furiously. “I didn’t mean to get everything out of control… I was only joking.”

“Don’t worry, I have a plan. We’re going to lie to the guards, and tell them Silver Grin kidnapped us and we got free. Then we tied him up in self-defense. However, while we were returning to town, he tried to get to the front and kick us off. In the commotion, we got the cart to stop and he went flying.”

“You know, that made more sense than what actually happened.” Gretchen says while looking pale. “Okay, let’s go. I’m ready.” Her arms are trembling.

“I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry.” You try to calm Gretchen a bit, she didn’t take well Silver Grin’s death. The weight of reality is on her shoulders.

Gretchen got in front of the carriage and you two went to the gates. A bored looking guard signals you two to stop. You go down and talk to him directly.

“Sir!”

“No need to get down, lady. We need to che—”

“It’s important! You see..” You tell him your version of the events. “…Now he’s lying over dead, and he’s dead… and… and…”

“Woah, Silver Grin is dead?! Hey, you, go there and check him out!” He points to a lesser guard, who promptly leaves, he moves like his armor doesn’t fit him.“Damn rookie making us look bad in front of the ladies. I’m sorry, but I do have some questions. You see Silver Grin is pretty known here in the gates. He takes travelers to the most dangerous places in this island, and takes them by request of the government… and only by request of the government. So here is the strange thing, I don’t remember him leaving yesterday in a second trip… So what’s up with that? Are you sure you’re telling me truth? Because it’s hard to believe…”

Uh-oh… he’s into something.

Guys, what the fuck are you doing?
We can't completely change our story now, it's too late for that!

The first part is good:
>"You can check, I was the one who was sent yesterday by request of the government.

But you definitely need to change what comes after that.

If I'm not mistaken, what actually happened was that Gretchen met him on the way back and when he refused to take her to us, she tied him up and stole the carriage right?

Well in that case, I would continue it like this:

>"You can check, I was the one who was sent yesterday by request of the government. This here is my friend Gretchen. She was worried about me and set off on foot to go to the dungeon to help me. She met Silver Grin on his way back and asked him to take her to the dungeon. He turned the carriage around but when she got on he jumped her and tied her up, right Gretchen? I'm remembering what you told me correctly?"

Hopefully Gretchen nods or just meekly agrees.

>"We're guessing he decided to take her deeper in the woods, far from anybody, so that he could... you know...
>That's when he found me as I was coming back from the dungeon. I was worn out from killing the monster,
pull out the tail
>so he was able to get me by surprise and overpower me. I guess he figured he could claim we'd both been killed by the monster and that he was too late to rescue us but managed to slay it himself. I can tell you looked very happy about taking this trophy for himself.
>And after that the rest happened the way I told you. Is that enough? We're both shocked, and about to collapse here."

Admittedly, my post (>>1243060) might have been long and more detailed than is in our interest.
However, you're not really answering his question if you don't specify that Gretchen was on her way to find us and met Silver Grin on his way back to town.
The way you wrote your reply, it sounds like she tried to convince him to help her after he'd gotten back to town, which is exactly what the guard is questioning about our story (not recalling Silver Grin leaving town a second time).

“Are we mind-readers? Sigh*… Anyway, you can check; I was the one who was sent yesterday by request of the government. This here is my friend Gretchen. “Y-yes, that’s more or less what happened.”

“Yeah, that’s sounds more plausible, but the location of the dungeon is a secret to everyone but us, officials and people of the government. And—”

“I asked one of your fellow guards the location.” Gretchen interrupts him. “Some of you become a little crooked when money applies.”

“Gretchen, that was unnecessary.”

“S-sorry. But, the crooked guard just told me the general direction, so I didn’t know where exactly was, in my way I found the old bastard. When I asked him where Nora was, he told me he couldn’t help me. Then I offer him anything in exchange, that’s when… he… he… ” Gretchen start crying, pretty convincingly by the way.

“That sounds tragic and all but—“ The guard gets interrupted.

“Sir! Here he is!” The novice guard is carrying Silver Grin’s corpse on his back.

“S-soldier, I told you to check on him! Not to bring him here!”

“M-my bad.” He drops Silver Grin straight to the floor. The sound of broken bones echoes in everyone’s mind.

“As dumb as it sounded, it seems at least one part of your story checks out. But I’m not buying it girls… Anyway, why aren’t you in the dungeon? You’re a debtor, right? That’s usually the kind of people Silver Grin took.”

“I defeated the beast!” You show the Rat’s tail.

“Good god almighty!” He’s impressed.

“Yeah, so I was worn out from killing the beast! When Silver Grin took Gretchen to the forest nearby the dungeon to... you know... and I was on my way back, then he found me and was able to get me by surprise and overpower me. I guess he figured he could claim we'd both been killed by the monster and that he was too late to rescue us but managed to slay it himself. I can tell you looked very happy about taking this trophy for himself.”

“That’s sounds sort of like him…. And I guess I’m interrupting your triumphant return... But I remember him getting back on town yesterday. We keep records you see…”

“R-records?!” The lesser guard murmurs, you’re the only one who noticed it. “Boss! I-I think we’re wasting these heroines’ time! Let them in! They need to rest!”

“What’s up with you? Just shut up. And you girls are coming with me. You’re both suspect of murder.”

“I understand your doubts, but If he got into town yesterday and didn’t leave, how come he was outside the walls? You must be mistaken. Also he was trying to commit murder! Of course he didn’t want people to find out! Show me the records! The Truth is in there”

“… let’s do what you’re proposing. Chump, bring the records.”

“Aye aye, sir.” He looks defeated. He goes inside the control tower and came back with a book. ”Here it is…”

The guard takes the book, goes to the last remaining pages and moves back and forth between them. “Soldier… what is the meaning of this?”

“What is it sir?”

“Why there are no records from yesterday?!”

“Y-you see… Y-yesterday… Steve was in ch—“

“Steve was not in charge yesterday, you were.”

“Then… oops…”

“Argh… Fine, get in, girls. But my eyes are on you two from now on.” He takes a feather. “Names?”

“Nora and Gretchen.” You say. He writes them down in the record.

“Names that I'll never forget... We will confiscate the wagon, if you don’t mind.” He signals his men to take Silver Grin’s horse wagon. “Have a nice day, ‘Heroines’” He grins at you two. The enormous door opens and you’re finally back to the capital of Aliheath… the town of Alitheath!… We will talk about the place later.

“Nora, you got us out of that one. You’re incredible.” Gretchen smiles. She looks tired.

Guys, I know you all want to go to town hall right now, but I think there's something more urgent we should worry ourselves with.

We really, really ought to get a piece of rope and go to a private location (our room or Gretchen's room seems the most plausible) and do the following: in turns, we tie each other up, and struggle against the bindings to free ourselves. It doesn't matter if we actually manage to or if the other has to eventually untie us, so long as we make a genuine effort.

We've been UNBELIEVABLY lucky that the guard didn't go "Ok, show me your wrists then".
If he did, he would have seen that there were no marks on them, whereas you bet Silver Grin's still tied up corpse has clear marks on them.

Once that's done, if there is still time today, we can go to Town Hall.

“Come on Gretchen, we need to go home, we have a rope in there, right?”

“A rope for what?” Gretchen seems curious.

“Well, we were tied up, right? We have no marks on our wrists, we were really lucky the guard didn’t check on us…”

“I still have some rope left. We can go to an alley and do it there if you think it’s necessary.” You wonder why she still has some.

“Home is better, more private.”

“Well, our parents aren’t home ‘till evening. Let’s go.”

You traverse the town to reach home. Aliheath is a pretty tame place, the gap between the rich and the poor is relative small, most money and wealth was lost in the Great Flood plus the lack of world trade made this possible. One of the downside is that most buildings were rushed, since people didn’t accustom to live on the mountains like they are doing now.

You eventually get home, surprisingly no one saw you come in. It’s a humble home you live in, your adoptive parents share room and so do you and Gretchen. In your room you tell Gretchen to tie you up. You start to struggle against the bindings.

“Nora, stop moaning! It’s weird!”

“I-I’m not moaning! I’m heroically yelling!”

“You what?”

The marks are done.

“Now it’s your turn.”

“I’ll pass…”

“Gretchen…”

“Okay, sheeesh.” She does the same for a while.

“Ngghh!!”

“Who’s moaning now?”

“S-shut up. You’re the one who wanted to make them quickly…”The marks are done in both of you! Success! “Do you mind if I get some sleep? I’m not feeling well…”

“Before that, let’s review our version of the story. It’s for both of us to be in the same page.”

“Aww…” She rubs her face with her hands. “Okay…”

You spent 20 minutes reviewing it.

“Can I… Yawn* sleep…?” Gretchen looks terrible.

Whew, that was a relief. I should have brought this up when I suggested waking Gretchen, but I only thought of it when we told our story to the guards. Decided not to bring it up to avoid "jinxing it" if you know what I mean.

Okay, I don't think we need Gretchen to come with us to town hall, in fact leaving her home to recover from the ordeal makes the situation even more plausible. We, on the other hand, have a debt to get off our back.

I'm a little worried about her though, she looks more worn out than circumstances warrant (considering that she wasn't actually kidnapped and desperately struggling to regain her freedom).
Maybe she's caught a fever? Let's feel her forehead before we devide if we're going to leave her here on her own.

“Are you feeling okay?”

“I feel like we did crash on the tree and I was in front.”

You put your hand in her forehead. Doesn’t seem like she has any fever.

“I’m not sick! I’m just sleepy…”

“Get some sleep then; I’ll go to the town hall by myself.” After hearing that, Gretchen goes to her bed.

“Good luck in there.” She dozes off. Poor thing, she is tired because of all she had to yesterday.

You leave home promptly to the town hall! Didn’t take you long to find it. It’s your first time here. You open up and go to the counter where an employee is attending. You talk to her.

“Hello, how can I help you?” the receptionist asks.

You need to be smart about this…

We've done more than enough lying today, so let's see:

>We say that we were able to slay the beast after it had been wounded by the now deceased Knight Francis and his group.

We can credit Helmaer for giving us the torch we used in fighting the beast. Or we can keep that to ourselves.
Do remember guys: the original plan was to avenge Francis and his companions by denouncing Helmaer for deserting them.
We don't necessarily have to do that, but doing the opposite and giving Helmaer any credit could be considered a disservice to their memory and the oath we took to Francis.

“I alone slain the beast!... Nah, I’m kidding, After Francis and his merry band of knights fell to the hand of the rat, I encountered a deserter named Helmaer. With some light assist from him, I slew the beast, it was previously wounded by the knights, I didn’t do much. Only I and Helmaer got from there alive.” You show the receptionist the Rat Tail. She gasps.

“I’m sorry you had to go through that, as a member of the government… no, as a citizen of this lovely place, I humbly thank you for what you did.” She stands up and bows to you.

“Y-you didn’t have to do that.”

“I felt like I needed. Pardon me for making you uncomfortable.”

“I-It’s okay”

She giggles.

“What’s your name, sweet young lady?”

“Nora.”

“I’m guessing you and this Helmaer were debtors.” She takes some papers.

“Yes, indeed.”

“Hmph… So Sir Francis’ group perished, I will inform their families shortly after I’m done with this.” She starts writing something in the papers.

“They were the true heroes of this tale.”

“Heroes… You remind me of my brother; he was quite the eccentric. He wanted to be a hero for the wrong reasons.”

“Wrong reasons?” You ask.

“Money, fame, you name it. His selfish desire ended up costing him when he finally met a strong willed man who saw him for what he truly was… and let’s say it was a ‘Bee-tdown’ from there!” She smiles, you don’t get it. “If he only knew what real heroes sacrifice to protect people… Oh, pardon me. The form is filled, you’re debt free. Congratulations, Nora.”

You jump in victory, the receptionist giggles again.

“You went through so much… I know! If the mayor gets here he’s going to reward you for your efforts. But if you want to live in anonymity and not be bothered, I’ll not say a thing to him about your identity... it’s your call, Miss Nora.”

What do you do?

>Wait for the mayor! You’ll receive something cool!

This is strange now, how can we possibly remain anonymous? We were marked as debtor and our debt has been paid by slaying the monster. Surely that has to remain written down, name and deed. No administration would just go "Ok, we're even" and throw the records in the trash.

On one hand, waiting to be possibly rewarded for succeeding in the quest sounds great.
On the other I'm more tempted by the idea of starting to put together a back up plan to quickly flee the town if, through some unforetold means, the truth about Silver Grin is revealed.

Of course being recognized as a town hero might help lend credence to our story even in the face of some circumstantial evidence pointing to the contrary.

All in all, I think we should wait for the Mayor.

I think we should get a cape. How else will people know we're a hero?

No objection from me. But is it urgent? I mean we can surely get the information now, but don't have to rush there to give it back immediately.
And that's assuming Francis lived in this same town.

“Can I ask you something?”

“What is it?”

“Where does Francis’ family lives?”

“Sorry, that’s private information.”

“Please. Look” You show her the sword. “He gave me this before his last dying breath and I would like it to give it back to his family personally.”

“Hmm… I guess the direction slipped out of my hands directly to your pocket!” She stands up and puts a paper in your pocket. “It will be our little secret.”

“Thank you.” You start leaving.

“Wait, you don’t want to wait for the mayor?”

“I would love to, but this is more important now to me.” You gently tap your pocket. “Maybe I’ll come back later. Good bye.”

“Take care, Miss Nora.”

As you go to Francis’ home you wonder where you could get a cape. Heroes need capes. You arrive to the location, Francis’ home is better than yours but not marginally. You hear children playing on the back. Before you could knock the door, someone talks to you.

“What are you doing?” a young man asks you very aggressively. He’s leaning on the wall of Francis’ house like a poser.

>”Hey, have some manners! Anyway, I came to see Francis’ family.”

“Francis is out, you damn debtors already convince him of going.”

“You got the wrong impression; I’m here to see Francis’ family. But before I go into details… do you live around here or something?”

“Yes, I do. Matter of fact, I’m Francis’ Disciple. I’m waiting for him to finally come back… and for you to go away.”

“Hmm… Anyway, I’ll knock if you don’t mind.”

“I do mind. I’m protecting his family like he asked me to.” He puts himself in front of the door.

“Not going to do a thing until you explain yourself.”

He stares at you intensely.

You take his sword out.

“Francis... was felled in his fight against the beast. I’m sorry.”

He opens his eyes wide open, his mouth slowly opens and his body completely freezes. He moves away from the door. You take that as your queue and knock the door. The door opens and you see a fragile good looking woman with a cane, she looks at you and says:

“Hello, you are…?—”

“Wait! I’ll be the one who’s going to tell them!” the young man says.

“Iged? What is it? What happened? Why are you crying?” She looks worried, she looks at you and spots Francis’ sword. “No… No…” She trips and drops her cane somewhere; you help her seat in a chair nearby. “I-Is he?”

“He is…” Iged says to the woman.

“I’m sorry.” You said to the Ill looking woman.

“No… my father.” The poor woman starts crying. After 2 or 3 minutes of pure sorrow. You start talking again.

“I came here to deliver the bad news and to give this back.” You showed them the sword.

“Did my father give it to you?”

“Yes, but—”

“Then it’s yours.”

“What?! She barely knew Francis! And that’s—“

“Shut up… I’m not going against my dad’s last wish. What’s your name young lady?”

“Nora…”

“Thank you for delivering the news to us, Nora. But could you be so kind of leaving us alone for now? I’m not sure how I’m going to tell my brothers the news, but I would like it to myself. It’s family matter after all.”

“Yeah, don’t worry, I’m leaving.”

“… I said it’s a family matter.” She stares at Iged.

“B-but Enlia, I—“

“It’s your fault it happened.” She’s stone cold.

You and Iged left the place. Outside he’s staring at floor, you know he’s hurt.

“Iged, was it?”

“My name is Igedic. Iged for short.”

“Not exactly.”

“Your father did that to you?”

“I mean… I never met him, the only thing I know about him was his debt.”

“Oh… Since you don’t hold a grudge for how I just treated you, I will tell you. Francis was a great knight years ago who retired to take care of his family after her wife died, a sudden retirement, he hide for years even changing his name. Also great isn’t even close to defining him, he was an otherworldly warrior.

He retired a decade ago and that’s when things started to get rough around here. And I… just found him… The legendary Knight of Aliheath… I pledge for him to train me but he didn’t want to. Eventually he accepted some weeks ago. Then when I trained with him, he was as strong as ever… I knew he was the hero that was going to save Aliheath. I begged and begged to save the people, our people… Eventually he accepted, and he joined his old gang and together went to save the day… This is the part where you tell me what happened.”

He stares at you intensely.

You give him an explanation about what happened, omitting Helmaer from the tale. About how they activated all the traps, about injuring the monster and how big the group was that ended up dying.

“So he was really the responsible of doing it?”

“I mean, if it wasn’t for me I’m not so sure if the monster would have died. They didn’t strike its heart like I did.” You say jokingly.

“My point is… if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be safe?”

“Yeah.”

“… I don’t know how to feel.”

“It was Francis’ decision and his sacrifice saved everyone. That’s what you need to know.”

He gives you a soft smile.

“So how about you? Any daring escapades? Chance encounters with women? Hmm?” You tease.

“Heh… I’ve been in some street fights, yes. Never lost one either.“ He stares at his fist.

“I guess you’re no Casanova… we’re going to have to make it up to that poor girl, aren’t we?”

“She didn’t seem mad at you.”

“Yeah, but I owe her father a life debt, and I can’t repay it in this life, but perhaps I can ease the suffering of his daughter.”

“Her name is ‘Enlia’, you know where she lives. We will come up with something to help her… if she let us.”

“I have one or two ideas in mind. But first…” You arrived to the Town Hall. “You going?”

“I’ll wait here. I don’t want people to get the wrong impression.”

“Have it your way.” You smile and get inside. To be honest, the whole situation was quite stressing, but you think you did a good job dealing with it.

“She’s back, Mayor.” The receptionist says.

“Yes! Yes! Yes! Our heroine is back!” He goes near you and handshakes you with both hands. “I’m deeply sorry for all you had to go through! It was an oversight of mine letting people like you go in there with no experience. But the guards said that training was a waste of time and— I’m sorry! I’m rambling about stuff you don’t care.”

“It’s okay…” You feel overwhelmed. He’s extremely tall.

“Your debt being paid is not enough of a reward! You did what hundreds failed to do and saved our land! Now tell me sweet child, what do you want? What is what your heart desires? You can’t exactly have anything you want, but we will do our best to fulfill your desire regardless!”

Well crud, if you hadn't put there the prompt
>There is this girl called Enlia

I would have asked for advenced combat training (even if it meant being sent to a skilled master living in another town rather than having one hired to come teach us), so that we could become a proper heroine, but now I'd feel like a douche if I didn't pick that one.

Anyway, glad to see we are getting honors and a reward. I was afraid there could be a twist, like that the monster was actually supposed to be undefeatable and a convenient way to get rid of poor people who couldn't make a living for themselves and that the mayor would actually be seething mad.

>"Perhaps a few things for myself, some equity, such as a property that I could live on tax-free and, possibly or, a small sum.

>Also tax exemption for the guardians, who raised the courageous, plucky, and clearly drop dead gorgeous woman in front of you. I am not a person who would let such debts lie after all. Ah, for a period of time of your choosing within reason of course. It would be unreasonable to ask for an indefinite tax exemption.

>Perhaps you could spread my name around a bit. What young eager lass or lad like myself wouldn't like to be renown as a hero, eh?

>Speaking of being a hero, it wouldn't be too far from the truth to say what happened in the cave happened to be dumb luck. I feel as though were I put through some more formal training, perhaps it wouldn't have been nearly as dangerous.

>However, barring all of that... I hope that you could help the daughter of the person who I owe my life to. Her name happens to be Enlia, son of Francis. If forced to choose I would ask for her protection the most.

>Whether you pick all of this silly requests, or possibly just one, I thank you for the offer. And don't think bad of me for saying this, but I would also like this deal to be written on paper and to be notarized by a state official. I've been put under debt once, and I don't plan on ever having to again.

>Let me know what your decision will be, but know that I understand that I may be asking for a bit much and that it is entirely within your right to refuse my requests."
>>
>>1245689
This may be the best solution, bringing up several possibilities while noting that it's okay if we get just one and if so which one (aid for Enlia and her siblings)

Those may be a tad too many though. I'd drop the first one, the property, we're not homeless and we'll be adventuring anyway.

On an unrelated note,
>>1245610
>Chance encounters with women? Hmm?
Don't be silly Nora, of course not. Why do you think his name is IGEtDICks?
>>
>>1245689
>>1245804
*oh yeah, maybe let's drop the request for name spreading too. Heroes are supposed to be humble and, what's more, we admit in the next sentence as we request training that we were mostly lucky and owe much to Francis' group.
>>
>>1245804
Hmm, yeah, perhaps you're right.

OR MAYBE YOU'RE WRONG!.

But you're probably right.

Speaking of encounters with women, we're awfully butch for a lass, aren't we? Perhaps our relationship with Gretchen is stronger than we thought. I mean, who kidnaps a guy for their BFF? It is now in my mind, canon that Nora is a domLesbo.
>>
>>1245820
Also another good point. (OP) Hope you're going to read these additions.
>>
>>1245824
Mh, but she seemed kind of flirty with him (basically asked him if he had a girlfriend completely out of the blue. That usually means she's interested).
Maybe Nora is bi. Or perhaps it's Gretchen that's attracted to Nora and the latter's never realized it (with Gretchen thinking she has to keep it secret or she'll lose Nora as a friend, assuming her to be straight as an arrow).

>>1245827
Glad you agree. Besides, when people are no longer sent to die at the dungeon, word of mouth will probably spread our name around, whether we ask for it or not.
>>
>>1245804
I just realized something. The name sounding like that may have been completely intentional: it could be the reason why he shortens it, not just for simplicity.
Then again, if it did bother him he probably wouldn't have told us his full name so easily, so probably no.
>>
>>1245610
Agh, posting way too much. But this just occurred to me: when we get the chance (after we're done discussing any rewards), we should probably bring up the Silver Grin situation.

The guy worked for the town and apparently he was a fairly dependable asset (based on the guard's words).

Given that and our involvement with the circumstances of his death (the truthful part about him ferrying us to the dungeon and the part we had to twist to protect Gretchen), it would be kind of strange and (once the mayor is informed of it) suspicious if we never mentioned it. Victims, are usually rather vocal about whatever they've been through.

We can try to act like we're breaching the topic simply out of a sense of duty (again, the guy worked for the town), like
>"Ah Mr. Mayor, Sir, if you haven't been informed yet, I believe you should know..."

We shouldn't spontaneously say it (or it would sound like we're trying to suggest that this is actually in order) but if any talk of reparations is made, we should quickly dismiss it, saying the town isn't responsible for Silver Grin's misconduct.
I mean, it's bad enough that we have to mudden his reputation to save Gretchen, to go so far as to deliberately profit from it would be far too villainous for an aspiring heroine. This is a fantasy setting, karma and fate need be held in mind.

>>1245824
>>1245899
Oh and naturally, I suppose this may go without saying, it's also possible we're reading too much into it and they are just as close as real sisters with no romantic spark whatsoever, as presented by their backstory.

A person devoted to unearthing the truth. Let's stay clear of her, at least for a while, until this Silver Grin thing is long forgotten.
Might want to ask what her name is, both out of curiosity and to stay out of her way.

Concerning the delivery, I think it's best if we leave it to Reda.
Enlia would probably rather not see us again so soon since we are currently associated in her mind to the news of her father's loss (I mean, she did politely ask us to fuck off).
That and we don't want to come off as too invested in her family's personal business.

I understand what you're thinking with that, you want to give him a chance to make amends.

It'd be very nice, but I don't think that would work.
If we were to bring the papers, it would look like we are fishing for headpats, but at least it would be a tax exemption they are getting thanks to us.
If Iged was to bring the papers it would come off as "Sorry I got your father killed. But hey, look: that girl did something really awesome for you! So... I'm forgiven now, right?"

If Iged wants to make it up to Francis' family it will have to be by his own hand, not by delivering news of something we did for them.

“Have a nice trip, Nora.” She gently waves at you. You wave back.

>Head to Enlia, Check up on Gretchen, and go looking for Iged

I'm sure Gretchen and her parents would be absolutely floored with what we managed to get for the family. If our parents aren't home yet, well we can always ask Gretchen to relay it for us until we get home. Besides, we need to keep our eye on that girl. Who knows what she'll do if she thinks we're in trouble.

For Enlia, we need to make sure that she understands that we're not saying sorry for what happened to her father. We did this because he saved our lives and we want to pay him back in a way.

As for Iged, how about we drag him around like a lackey. He caused this mess with his whims, and he better devote his life to getting stronger himself so as not to go to someone else and cause them pain.
>>

>As for Iged, how about we drag him around like a lackey. He caused this mess with his whims
That's one way to look at it.
Another is that had Iged not convinced Francis to go kill the beast to put a stop to unprepared people dying as they tried to kill it, we would likely have been one of those unprepared people winding up dead trying to kill it.
So, in a sense, Nora owes Iged her life.

Well, these papers aren’t going to deliver themselves… But first, you’re going to check on Gretchen.

After a short trip, you’re home. You open the door and see Gretchen eating.

“Hey”

“Gretchen I have good news.” You show her the Tax Exemption Papers.

“What’s that?” She takes it from you.

“Guess who’s family is not going to pay taxes anymore…”

“Nora, Are you serious? Holy shit!” Gretchen is really impressed.

“Yep, our parents aren’t here yet, right?”

“Nah, you know how is life in the sea.”

“I’ll trust you to deliver the news.”

“Where are you going? It’s getting late.”

“I need to deliver some news to Francis’ family.”

“The Knight that helped you?”

“Yes, exactly.”

“I’ll guess I’ll chill ‘till you come back. Take care.” She gives a big bite to her sandwich.

You went to Francis’ home, in the way you tried to spot Iged, but no luck… you’re outside of Francis’ home now; the sound of children playing is no more. You can feel a depressing aura from the place. You’re unsure; maybe it’s not time to deliver the news. As you get closer to the door, the sound of a familiar voice stops you.

“Wait... Um… what was your name again?” It’s Enlia.

“I’m Nora.”

“Yeah, that’s right... What are you doing here? I asked you to leave us alone for the day.”

“Uhm…”

“T-Thank you… I… Didn’t know what to do… Sorry, I shouldn’t be crying, it’s just…“

“Don’t worry. I should leave you alone.”

“I…” she wipes her tears out. “Tomorrow, would you be so kind to visit? I want to repay you in a way… it’s just today, I’m…”

“Your dad did enough; you don’t have to repay me.”

She holds your shirt “This is me wanting to thank you for what you did.”

Hey guys, important decision time: assuming Gretchen hasn't already taken the matter in her own hands, do we want to tell her parents the truth or the lie concerning Silver Grin's death?

Whatever we wish to do, we should also discuss it with her, if she hasn't already told them how things really went.
>>
>>1247715
I think that we should take matters into our own hands, since she didn't really do anything (except kidnap him in the first place) and as such should let use do the talking.
>>
>>1247715
I'd stick with the version we told the mayor.
>>
>>1247736
Ahem,
>>1241917
It's more like the other way around. All we did was choose not to untie him and then cover up for Gretchen by lying to the authorities.
Regardless, both of 'em would be in deep shit if the truth comes up.

>>1247739
I think so too. Whether or not we trust them, the least people know how things really went, the least likely it is for anyone to slip up.
That and they won't be guilty of knowingly helping maintain our cover story.

It’s been a long day, time to go home!

After a short walk, you arrive. You open the door and… Your parents are in front of you!

“NORA! OUR PRECIOUS NORA!” They both say at unison and hugged you.

“We were so worried!” Your mother says while squeezing you.

“I… can’t… breathe…” You say in pain. They stop hugging you.

“They finally let me out of prison!” Your father says.

“Prison?” You ask.

“You think they can take my beautiful daughter like that without me putting up a fight? They let me out when Gretchen came up with some papers.”

“Why didn’t you tell me before?” You ask Gretchen, she shrugs.

“I was trying to get your father out of there! You know If I still have some time for one more child!”

“Eugh!” You and Gretchen say at unison.

“Yeesh, Nora! Look at yourself, you look so ugly. Come here, your mother will clean you up!” She takes your Cannon Fodder Clothes, combs your hair and gives you new clothes. “There we are.”

“M-mom, you di—“

“Now Nora, I almost lost my 2 daughters in the span of 1 day. I will pamper you as much as I like.”

“Hehe…” Gretchen laughs at your misfortune.

“Gretchen don’t laugh, you’re still grounded! What you did was unforgivable!” Your mom takes no shit from Gretchen.

“Hey, it was a more solid plan than just waiting… and whatever Dad did.” Gretchen says begrudgingly.

“You two are hot heads! If you don’t think things through, I wouldn’t want to imagine what could happen to Nora if she wasn’t as strong of a girl.”

Both your dad and Gretchen stare at the floor.

“Now, now, it’s not time for this. It’s for celebration. You two girls wait for us while we get something delicious to eat!” You dad interjects.

“We will see you girls soon! AND DON’T GO AWAY!” Your mother says.

Both of them leave.

That was quite something.

“Did you tell them about— Why are you laughing?”

“You look so dumb.”

“S-shut up… it’s cute… anyway, did you tell them about Silver Grin?”

“You know them; they didn’t give me a chance to talk the whole time…”

“Okay, here is what we are going to do…”

>Tell them the truth.

>>Don’t talk about it.
>>
>>1247778
Well, if "Dad" is willing to get jailed for us, that definitely makes them trustworthy.
However, I still think it's best to let them believe the lie. Like I said, it makes accidental slip ups less likely and keeps them innocent (not just from a legal standpoint, which could be hell to demonstrate, but more importantly from a moral standpoint).
>>
>>1247778
>Stick to the version you told the mayor.
>>
>>1247797
I'm not sure that option is even possible.
They are going to want to hear from us how things went, and if we just omit the part about Silver Grin, they will eventaully hear about it from someone else and wonder why we mentioned nothing of it.
What's worse, whomever tells them about it, will be left wondering why we neglected telling our parents how we were kidnapped (kind of a big deal).
>>
>>1247778
>Tell them the full story, however make note that this isn't the official story.
>>
Oh, one more thing: if we do decide to tell them only the fabricated version, we should also tell them that the Mayor offered to make reparations for Silver grin but we declined and that we would prefer for as little attention to be brought on the kidnapping as possible.
They should consider this understandable: this is a medieval society, the slightest doubt concerning the integrity of a maiden's honor can easily become an indelible stain.
Just reassure them that he didn't get to do anything to either of us.

“We will stick to our version of the story.”

“Any other option would have been stupid to be honest. But our parents aren’t going to be happy to hear it.”

“It doesn’t matter that much, they are happy enough we are here alive.”

“You said it, sister.” Gretchen gets up and starts placing plates on the dinner table. “Hey, lend me a hand…” Go and help her.

Eventually your parents arrive with the biggest fish you have ever seen. During the dinner, you explain to them what happened with Silver Grin, your version of the story, they corroborated when they check out your marks in the wrists. They were horrified and hug you both. They felt so bad they lifted Gretchen punishment. Your mother said she suffered enough. You asked them to keep quiet about it as you want as little attention to it as possible. Also, they didn’t do anything to you or Gretchen. Gretchen nods and your parents agree.

As night falls, you and Gretchen went to your room and doze off, it’s nice to sleep in a bed again.

In your dreams you hear a familiar voice calling your name… at least it felt familiar.

You woke up! It’s a beautiful day and your family gets ready for breakfast. As you ate your dinner your father talks to you both about something you forgot about.

“Well girls, so much happened yesterday, but now it’s time to turn the page. Remember what we talked about?”

“You mean… our new jobs?” Gretchen says while chewing her bread.

“Exactly, I hope you girls remember what they are! Because today you start your way into becoming good citizens.”

“Dad, we don’t pay taxes, why we need a job? The Mayor does owes me a favor too, you know?” Gretchen doesn’t want to do it.

“Well young lady, there is this thing called giving back to society and doing your job would benefit everyone around here. Remember, our workforce took a hit after the rat incident. And besides, I know you will enjoy going fishing with me!”

“Ugh…” Gretchen facepalms.

“What about you, Nora? Ready for that waitress job in Champagne Bear?” that’s a restaurant nearby.

>”Yes, dad, I will do my best.”

“No…”

She opens the door.

“Come in. I’m sorry if you heard us yelling.” She’s leading you to a room, it’s the kitchen, there is a table. You and Enlia sit.

“What was that all about?”

“We were having a disagreement…”

Before you could continue talking, two little kids were spying on you too.

“Ignore them, they are my siblings and both of them are grounded.”

“Uh… okay.”

“Do want something to drink? I have some rum…”

“This early in the morning?”

“…”

“Serve me a cup then.” You never drink before. Your dad says it’s bad for little ladies like yourself. But now you’re an adult. She serves 2 cups.

“I have to thank you again for what you did, Nora. I didn’t know what we were going to do. My siblings are too young to work, and I… I’m useless.” She stares at her cane.

“Once again, you don’t need to thank me, it’s the only way I could—“

“Pay my father back, I know. Sorry, didn’t mean to be rude, I’m still a little bit pissed off.”

“It’s okay; you’re going through hard times.”

“What kind of man was Francis?”

“A tough guy and a loving father. My siblings are relatively young compare to me. But boy they never so what kind of tough guy he was. That’s mainly why he’s remembered as a legend. Like he beat a bear with his own two hands. He always said ‘You can’t really call yourself a hero, if haven’t beat a bear.’ I could go on and on about what he did, but that’s basically telling half of the town’s history through his eyes.”

“He sounds great.”

“Guess who also defeated a bear?”

“You?!”

“Yeah, bared handed too.”

“Is that why you are…?”

“Oh no, no, no. It was another incident.”

“About Francis’ sword…”

“What about it?”

“Who made it?”

“My mother. She was blacksmith. She died when I was very young, work related accident.”

“Does that mean…”

“Yes, we’re half-brothers. Their mother will come for them soon. They divorced and my father had them for the weekends.” That doesn’t sound heroic at all. Wait, divorce is a thing? Maybe they let him because of his status…

“Can I ask why you are a cripple? Or does it bother you much to tell?”

“It’s my first time telling this to anyone who isn’t family related, but if my father gave you his sword he must have saw something in you… You see, I was going with my dad through all his adventures, I was quite capable warrior if I can say so myself… and… well… a monster, a giant wolf attacked me and made me like this… Useless. Thank god my dad was there, but the damage was done to my leg... I will never walk normally again.” Didn’t he retire a decade ago? How old is she?...

“Is this why you think you’re useless?”

“Think? No… I’m useless. Everything I know was about combat; I can’t do the dishes properly, I can’t cook, I can’t run through the beach, I can swim in its waters, I can’t dance… I’m just a stupid cunt that can’t even help his father when he needed me the most… I’m fucking use— … ” She couldn’t contain her tears.

You tap her on the shoulder, she almost as a reaction hugs you tightly; she’s letting all her sadness, frustration and pain on you. You hug her back; you stayed like this for a long time, even her siblings came near hear and gave the good ol’ tap on the shoulder. Finally she composes herself a bit.

“I’m such a mess… “

“Don’t cry, papa didn’t like when you cry.” Her sister says. You try to tell her to shut up with a pantomime.

“Yeah, dad would be ashamed…” Enlia concludes.

“I don’t think your dad would be ashamed. Just a little bit worried about her daughter.” You say. “Also, have you ever thought about taking up blacksmithing?”

“She has barely the patience for cooking.” The little brother says. Her younger sister agrees with a nod.

“This is why you two are GROUNDED! Get out!” Enlia says half-jokingly. Both of them scattered. “I need to get the equipment if I really want to become a blacksmith… Anyway, enough about me, tell me about you, Nora. What do you want to do in life?”

“Being a hero.”

“uh…”

Awkward silence lasted for a while. You broke the ice.

“I’m searching for someone to train me… so I’m not even close to been there yet.”

“I see… You do look very fragile.”

“Maybe you can teach me how to fight”

“Uh?... me?”

“I mean, why not?”

“But—“

You hear someone knocking the door.

“Could you be so kind to attend for me, I’ll be behind you.”

You open the door; a middle age woman is there.

“Is Enlia and my children here? I heard the news about Francis.”

“Aunt? What are you doing here?...”Enlia asks while behind.

“I came to take my family with me.”

“I’ll call the kids…”

“You can come with us if you want. But you’ll have to learn how to make yourself useful. I don’t want a burden in my house.” Enlia stares at the ground a bit.

Rocky week for me! But thanks for keeping with the quest! I hope you guys enjoy it. It was very fun at least to me. Feedback of any type is always welcome.

If you want updates about the quest:

Discord: https://discord.gg/AmjbaTR
Twitter: https://twitter.com/91m10 (Even if I fucked up the link, you’ll know it’s live at least)

I hope this time I do start the quest on Monday and I’m sorry for all the delays. Expect a more action oriented thread next week and not so much drama… at least I hope it’s going to be like that.

Thanks for playing!

But what if we did mean it that way?

Then stuff gets kinky.

i eman we already got to rob part down

Ah, I couldn't attend the last 3 posts (meaning of course the ones advancing the plot).
Oh well, I believe I would have gone with the same choices prevalently made anyway.

I guess next installment is going to have a lot of wax on, wax off.

So, once again I'd say I'm completely satisfied with how we managed. Thank goodness we've been able to get away with the mess Gretchen got us in last thread.
I still think we would be wise if we made preparations to flee town (with Gretchen?) at the first signal that the truth could be about to come up. You know, have luggage more or less ready, familiarize ourselves with methods of leaving (by boat, by horse), the works.
Definitely wasn't any time for that today though. Tight schedule.

Next thread we should remember to tell the mayor we found a master to learn from (though he might scoff when learning it's the lame girl). We may want to keep that window open for the future though. No one said we can't learn from a second master after we graduate our first.

nice thread, keep the good work

I vote for yuri in the next session,

Something worth commenting: Gretchen is not gonna be happy about Nora moving out.
She obviously wasn't happy with her wanting to become an adventurer, which was to be expected since she went through all that mess to rescue her, only for Nora to decide "You know, I think I wanna go look for more danger".
She's obviously very attached. However, this accomodation is actually ideal: by moving out of home but not out of town the separation can be gradual rather than sudden and complete (had we instead needed to move to whatever other town our hypothetical Master resided in).

>>1249286
We know. You've been pushing for it since yesterday.
Not that I'm against it. But I still think Nora was showing some interest in Iged, so she's probably straight or (given it that 91m10 is open to the idea of yuri >>1249167) bi.
She may not have realized it yet though!

>>1249262

Thanks man.

I mean, if Nora wants to experiment romance in any capacity more power to her. Remember, she's the only character you guys have fully control of (for now) and I will respect that no matter what.

Also, don't think Gretchen is going to stay still after getting the news about Nora moving. One of her most strongest trait (that I've written) is that she's very proactive.
>>
>>1249383
Haha, interesting. I think we're definitely going to make her bi then, whether or not she acts on it.

Let me take this chance to say that I love your approach at handling prompts, trying your best to incorporate all non-conflicting ones.
Great "quest mastering"!
>>
>>1249415

Thank you! It means a lot. Prompts and comments made stuff so much easier and funnier to write. I do hope my approach encourages them.
>>
>>1249477
What was the most unexpected thing that's happened so far? Like, what derailed the most?
>>
>>1249477
Only thing is I'd suggest being mindful of is putting your players (or rather their character) in a situation where they are responsible for something even though the players aren't really at fault.
Specifically I'm talking about Silver flying to his death and, more recently, Nora blurting out "Nah, I just wanted to know who the genius detective is so I can steer clear of her. Wouldn't want her to waste time investigating me, I'm totally in the clear."

In the first case, I suppose we kinda had it coming with all the anons clamoring to just kill him (fortunately always outvoted), but we really couldn't have untied him without things turning ugly for Nora and Gretchen I think.
The latter I just got befuddled, no idea why it happened. I don't think I should have made sure to specify "but let's not say that this is why we want to know" when explaining why it could be a good reason to ask, should I have?
>>
>>1249503

Everything related to Francis’ family. It was not a thing I planned at all (Except Iged’s appearance). I did not think you guys were that interested in honoring him and this whole plot line was improvised.

>>1249509

You’re completely right about Silver Grin’s case. It was me trying to end the first thread in a high note and add some unnecessary tension (Since it was basically the same situation at the gates, but instead of a corpse, it was a hostage). I sometimes get carried away thinking this is more like a TV series that needs to get interesting at the end of the episode rather than a videogame you tell yourself to stop playing midway and save. My bad. It’s not going to happen again.

Now, the second one, I don’t know if I didn’t deliver the message properly but Nora’s comment has to do with the fact Reda was talking about a crazy woman who lost sight of finding justice and is determined to defeat ‘someone’ at all costs. Nora just didn’t want to deal with crazy people even less one that is a mad scientist. Reda then clarifies that the woman in the story is not a bad person nor as crazy as she made her sound.

In no moment Nora looked suspicious or she implied she didn’t want to deal with the mad scientist because she was a detective of justice once.
>>
>>1249591
He we might be bad people, but we're not bad people!
>>
>>1249286
I vote for /u/ to leave and stay leave

We didn't exactly get what Francis wanted most though: vengeance. Helmaer is still alive (good), not reported to the authorities for what he did and in fact commended for assisting in slaying the beast (if Francis had an actual grave, he probably would have been spinning in it).

But eh, I always had a soft spot for cowards trying to get out of situations they never wanted to be in.

Well it did provide tension, and I wouldn't say it was unnecessary either. It's always nice to end things with a bang.
While I was unable to check the thread last night, I kept thinking "Crud, if the conclusion of the first thread was anything to go by, the simple conversation I left probably got interrupted by the town guard crashing in to arrest Nora because of some evidence they found. I gotta get back!"
It was actually quite the relief to see that I didn't miss out on another dramatic cliffhanger.

Additionally, while it may have been something thrown onto our hands, Silver Grin's death served a useful and important purpose: to show that there are consequences for the events that transpire in the quest.
We were able to get off clean, but we had to work for it (you should have seen my face when, just as we started talking to the guards, I realized "OH SHIT, WE DON'T HAVE ROPE MARKS ON OUR WRISTS!! WEREFUUUCKED!!!!!"), and now we've got a main character with a heavy conscience (not so much Silver's death, that was an accident, but posthumously labeling him an attempted rapist) as well as a dark secret that can come haunt her at any time.
Hopefully that will stave off any further talks of "kill anyone and anything that poses a problem".

I'm a little confused with the whole "records" thing though. Suppose that there had been records, wouldn't they corroborate our story after we explained that Gretchen met him on his way back, before he returned to town?

Anyway, this incident also allowed Gretchen to show her true colors when faced with the unexpected consequences of her actions. I honestly thought she might be a bit of a sociopath in thread one, but this continuation showed that was just an act she put up and allowed her to grow and us to know her better.

Mh, if that's what you meant then Reda can hopefully dismiss and forget Nora's comment and not remember it at the most inopportune time (say if that unconvinced guard dude was to talk to her about us and how we apparently lucked out because of the missing records) "Wait... she did say she considered the truth and justice dedicated investigator a threat. Maybe she IS hiding something."
But let me tell you, if I was in Reda's shoes, I probably would.

I wonder if, while bare handed, Enlia used some kind of strength increacing potion before fighting that bear.
I mean, unless she's lost a shit-ton of muscle mass since becoming crippled (and I'm not seeing all that muscle in this picture >>1248634) I feel that otherwise I have to call bull on that claim.

Next time on FPtHQ: Nora, Enlia, Iged love triangle!

*Ah wait, looking again at this:
>>1244227
The guard said
>I remember him getting back on town yesterday.
So I guess, either I remembered wrong and Gretchen kidnapped Silver Grin within the town walls (in that case though, how did she lead him out, tied up in his carriage, while eluding controls, whether they bothered writing records or not?) or perhpas it's the guard that is misremembering?

If it's the former, then it's strange Gretchen didn't point this out when we first agreed on what to tell the guards, but I suppose she might have thought meeting him on his way back sounded more convincing than being kidnapped by him in the middle of the town.
>>
>>1251032
I suppose we have found ourselves a use for that justice maniac.

>>1249605

Indeed.

Power Struggle is real.

The guard did misremember, but he was right about one thing, Silver Grin did come back to town. But the old man went out twice (Something unusual for him), first to transport Francis' Group, and then later Nora.

Also Gretchen's story about how she got the wagon is a bit more interesting than what you think. There is a reason she came so late to the rescue. Also The record being 'lost' is related to this. But this is not important to the overall plot though.

Enlia is wearing armor in that pic, something Nora couldn't even lift. So take that in mind!

Side Note: Iged's name is not about sucking dick, it's the word edgy mixed up (Yged).

Ah, so if there were records they would have matched our story. Okay.

Mh, so Gretchen's keeping secrets uh? Well let's pretend we don't know since Nora doesn't. Instead we can try to figure out what her ambition that our parents won't support is.

I suppose that's true about the armor, but there's a difference between being strong enough to wear one and having the muscle power to wrestle a bear. The latter should definitely show.
Besides, it could be fun if Enlia had the secret habit of talling half truths and exaggerations about her past heroics (and rather cute if whenever the truth is exposed she gets all mad and embarassed)

Ah, I see.
Well, we might still use that against him if he gets too edgy or boisterous at any point.

Welp, I missed two sessions but it seems anon did fine this time.
Looking forward to next week, 91m10.
