Closing his eyes, images of blood sharpening itself into a deadly blade, smoke flowing as scarred skin formed from it, the deadly purple eyes above scars and under hair as white as snow. The unique feeling of reiatsu sharpened to a surgical point, able to break through the skin of souls far more powerful than herself, a skill fashioned by her old life's sheer talent and skill in killing and mastery of the art of the sword.

Kimi....perhaps he did not need to seek to make an equal, he certainly did not need a friend anymore. She treated him casually, and seemingly had no fear or reservations because of his nearly unnatural power and skill. Maybe one day he could also call her equal but...but

She was odd. In more than one way, he had watched her for sometime. Sure her rapid progression could just mean she's like him but. He pushed his glasses up, remembering her reaction to hollow bait. She was nearly drooling from just being around it.

And...the meno's she killed. There were signs it had fired a cero, and her clothes had been burnt away but...she was nearly untouched.

Aizen opened his eyes. He'd have to keep observing her, and couldn't throw away his work. But...his former plan of testing the Hōgyoku, when he thought of it now....it sickened him. There had to be a cleaner way to achieve his dream, and maybe his only friend had some secrets that could reveal it.

But they'd have to be revealed without harming her....if she indeed held any. He knew it was possible to merge the powers of soul reaper and hollow, it was not just the dreams of a mad soul. He knew it in not only his heart, but his mind.

Shinji's voice drew Sosuke out of his deep thought and turmoil. the lieutenant smirked and then smiled. Well, he had all the time in the world, he'd just have to bring it up with Kimi some day.

The sound of flowing water...its actually quite calming. I'm not sure I have much to do today, since I'm on reserve as it stands and....well I'm still sore from those two quincy. I can still taste their blood on my tongue. Its a sour taste, a very sour taste. And even though I used their blood to heal my wounds and stich my flesh, I can still feel the ache of it all. But it should all pass by soon. It always does and has. I sigh, smiling as I relax next to the water fall in the middle of the kuchiki's garden, the water splashing on my face as a cold mist.

This...is heaven. I've never thought about it before but I'm....well in the best place I could ever hope to end up. I have a firm, but polite and kind lord, I have students who view me as a master and dear friend, I have comrades who will always be a challenge to face in a duel. And best of all I can show off my art and practice it as much as I want against actual threats.

Yeah, this if this isn't heaven, then I can't imagine what is.

I smile, enjoying the serenity of this solitude and perfect spot, its nice and cool, but isn't close enough to the waterfall to be wet. Its a nice place to just let all of your worries pass on my by. But...but. my eye twitches and I tap my fingers on my knees, groaning as I stand back up, and open my eyes. But I don't like being idle, there's no use in doing nothing when there's something you can do. Sure relaxing is nice and all, but I have duties to do, even if I'm just on reserve today. I might be able to train a few of the less talented and skilled shinigami, I could just practice my own skills. As it stands, there's so much I can do, it'd be a waste to just relax by the waterfall and enjoy myself. Besides a member of the sixth division should never be idle. We have a reputation to uphold after all. and if a shinigami from another division saw me slacking, what would they think? they'd become lazy if they thought the model shinigami's could slack off, they'd think it was some loophole of the rules they could exploit.

And to just be honest, I need something to do to pass the time anyways. My white hair blows in the wind as I stare out at the rows of bamboo and trees ahead of me.

And then a familiar face walks down the stone path.

Byakuya walks into view, his arms crossed as he walks along. Judging from the look on his face, something's been annoying him. He walks along with all the confidence and dignity one would expect for royalty. But he's relaxed as well, like he knows everything around like the back of his own hand. And he probably does with how much I've trained and sparred with him here.

His eyes are closed, so he doesn't see me as he rests against a tree and sighs

"Finally, some peace and quite to think" He says smiling as the older sibling instinct Aya has given me whels up like boiling water

"OH BYAKUYA KUN!" I shout at the top of my lungs, cupping my hands around my mouth "Do you want to train with me?"

He sits there for a second, his brow furrowing as his lips purse. He sighs and opens his eyes

"Sometimes Kemuri sensei" He says angrily "I think you and captain yoruichi plan every morning to pester me"

"Oh no, I was just relaxing here to, and got a little bored" I say, hopping to the shore "Why, has the cat been bothering you again"

"She stole the ribbon keeping my hair together, again" He says with a blank expression before he smirks "But....well I remembered I had a tea pot nearby and, well she expected to chase me and not throw anything"

"Has she ever watch you fight?' I ask chuckling as he nods

"Oh most certainly, but....she wasn't happy about me throwing tea at her either" He sighs hanging his head, as I notice the red mark on his cheek "Not that I blame her of course, not that she's still mad"

"And she seems to have given you the ribbon back" I say happily, leaning down to look him in the eyes

"Well you can always try and get the drop on her" I say, shrugging as I walk up to a few of the bamboo stalks by the side of the road, pushing my way past them and grabbing the already tattered dummies I've stored their, their cloth bodies spilling out random junk. I push the more offending pieces back in as I laugh "Even though that's probably impossible"

"Of course I am" he says confidently, spreading his legs and tightening his gut, holding his arms up as I hold my hand out, a small orb of blue energy forming at my palm

He runs up to me, and punches it on purpose, wincing as the ball pops, and he's sent flying back. But he stays on his feet, grabbing onto one of the lanterns.

"ready for geki?" I ask, smiling widely as he nods and calmly walks back into place

"I'll try to fight back against this one, so be prepared sensei" He says with a confident smile as I take a breath and begin to recite

"Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini!!" I yell, as I trace the symbol in the air "Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own throat!"

Kimi rolled twenty

I can feel him exerting his reiatsu, it rolls over me like a wave. But I just focus mine, narrowing my eyes as I put a bit more force behind the spell as I finish tracing the sigil in the air, lowering my hand like I'm sheath a sword. Byakuya is washed over by a wave of red light, that sticks to his body like water and flares like fire. His eyes stop moving, and his mouth freezes as he takes a breath. His legs lock up and his ares stiffen as his chest stops midrise. even his hair stops blowing in the wind as he stares ahead at me, unable to move his eyes or anything else as a rough breeze blows by and makes his body start to fall backwards, as he just remains like a perfect statue of himself. The red energy pulses, holding him in place as I stare at him.

I release the spell a moment later, and he catches himself mid fall, panting and looking a bit shaken up

"Sorry my young lord, please forgive me" I say bowing as he looks up at me, still pale in the face

"Don't act like a dog kimi, that was...terrifying" He says, chuckling to regain some of his confidence, standing back up as his hair falls into place "if you weren't so honorable you'd even more intimidating to fight, I imagine"

"Striking a foe who can't swing back, attacking a motionless enemy, a defenceless one" I say frowning as I look at hands and sigh "it'd leave a bad taste in my mouth"

"I know, you'd told me plenty of times" He says bowing his head slightly "you hold yourself back from using tactics you deem unfair, and even then I still have to rely on tricks to spar with you"

"Its how you fight, you use things beside yourself and your blade, nothing dishonorable about that' I say chuckling as he smirks

"Well, I just want to fight you cleanly one day, without having to use my surroundings" He says, as his smirk because a content smile

"That would be the day you surpass me, Byakuya" I say confidently, crossing my arms as he nods

"I am" I say, keeping my arms crossed as I watch him raise his index finger and muddle finger, frowning as I don't move my arms an inch. I do when I notice him hesitating for a moment, and drop them to my sides. He waits a second longer, trying to use the spell perfectly.

I feel it rush to me as he pushes his fingers towards me, and wince as it grabs my arms and forces them behind my back and over each other. This doesn't....feel right, it reminds me of when I was being "Escorted" "home". I frown angrily and he releases the spell

"It didn't hurt did it?" He asks, frowning as I shake my head "Oh I was worried, good"

"Just remembering things I don't like" I sigh as I shake my head

"Well I won't ask about it then" He says lowering his hand, and raising his other one "Are you okay to continue"

"The past can't hold me back, so yes I am" I say calmly

"Good, try not to hurt yourself Kimi" He says flatly as the ball of blue light forms in his hands

I run up to him, my sandals sticking in the mud as I pull my shoulder back and slam it into the ball. It cracks and I get sent back, my feet dragging through the mud and making a trench in it before I stop and get my balance back

"You know, I think Aya would like this spell" I say happily, rubbing my elbow as Byakuya frowns

"She'd like hitting it, so lets not tell her so she doesn't end up herself" He says as I shrug

"She bounces right back up anyways" I say, laughing as I cross my arms "So, now for geki"

"What else would it be?" He says narrowing his eyes "Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini!!"

Moving my legs so I don't fall like he did, I look up at the sky so I can have a good view while I'm frozen in place, watching the clouds float by as he continues the incantation.

"Look upon yourself with horror and tear out your own throat!" He yells, as I don't get paralyzed and freeze up, I hear a familiar noise, and look down to see a tendril of orange light with lighter yellow spirals on it emerging from in front of his index and middle fingers

"Surprised?" He asks as it snakes around him in the air "This is Hōrin, it and Geki share the same designation, and its often forgotten due to the simple fact that Geki is more effective than it is"

.....Now this is...hmm, I could actually use this since it isn't just an instant stop, it looks like I have to work for it.

'I think I read about it" I say frowning as it continues curling in on itself "But I can't be sure if I did"

"Well you should remember if you did, very shortly" he says smirking as the tendril turns and fires towards me.

I don't run, and just cross my arms staring at the light as it rushes towards me. It slams into my chest and wraps around me like a ring, and pushes me forward, carrying me around as I notice Byakuya moving his hands, making the symbol for geki.

I focus my mind and reiatsu as he repeats the incantation, as I get lifted into the air, high above the pond.

I don't move, letting myself go limp as I focus for a moment and wait for the feeling of my body tensing up as I close my eyes. Red light shines in the darkeness and I try to open my eyes. But it feels like someone has sewn them shut. Focusing on the feeling of opening up, the cloud filled sky slowly emerges tinted by the red energy covering my body. Its a slow process, but I manage to uncross my arms and using my own reiatsu I break Byakuya's Geki like old wooden board.

I glance down at him with a smug smirk, chuckling as I see his eyes wide with surprise and....Oh. I think he might of just dropped me from the shock.

Well this would be trouble for both of us, if I wasn't an...oddity. I smirk, laughing as my skin flakes away and blackens, crumbling to ash and cinders as I turn to a cloud of smoke and float through the ring, bending away from it as I float and twirl through the air simply for astetic reasons. I reform sitting down on the edge of the cliff, the ring fading away as I put my hands on the edge and look down at the young lord.

Man, I just thought of a potential way the whole Aizen thing could pan out.
He tests the thing on Kimi (with consent)
People notice hollow Kimi, she is sentenced to death but escapes
Something happens to Aya cause she is so close to Kimi (Death? Imprisonment? Something else?)
Aizen plots revenge against soul society from the inside due to the terrible treatment of his only freind.
Kimi, who is now bitter beyond belief trains in order to Avenge? Aya.
Tosen might get involved due to his connections.
The main plot is set into motion through this, though a bit differently than the usual.

I copy his movements slowly as he moves his fingers around slowly.

"Its meant to detain, not harm, and will break if you try to use it like that, but knowing you you'll find a way to use it as a weapon anyways" He chuckles as I follow his dance like movements "but you really just want to have control over it, the Hōrin will do all the work, you just need to guide it to where it needs to go"

"Hmm, so its like leading a leashed dog?" I ask, glancing at him as he nods

"Yes, a wild dog, but if you tame it, it'll be much easier" He says calmly, smiling peacefully "You can make two at once, but its difficult to control them"

"And how exactly do you do that?' I ask stopping as he moves to demonstrate "cause you're making it sound difficult"

"Oh it isn't, making the Hōrins is easy, the hard part is controlling them" He says calmly "it might be hard to create them with weak reiatsu, but if you manage to do it, you have to hold your hands like this"

He puts his hands together like he's holding a ball

the walls are covered in painting and tactics he drew up, notes sitting in a neat pile on his desk, with two bookselves sitting next to his bed, with books and journals with titles like "Observations of the hunting paths of hollows" or "Imperial flower arrangement" and several other books an various sciences, arts and shinigami arts. nearly Half of them appear to have been written by him and titled to simply keep track of his various writings, I stare at them as he walks in and over to his bed, sitting down on it as Aya stops by the art work he made and stares at it like a critic.

My eyes are drawn over to where aizen sits and I see him staring at something behind me, I turn and just see a table with another small bookshelf next to it.

"See, nothing much" He says warmly "So anything in particular you wanted to talk about"

"No, not really, just want to talk, did you have any conversations in mind?" I ask, I sit down at the table and he tilts his head and laughs

"Yes, but it wouldn't be appropriate with Aya around" He says chuckling as Aya huffs

They're...odd, a style that isn't...like anything I've seen. the brush strokes are heavy, and thick, and the art is hard to understand, but beautiful. Birds flying through black waves, and old men carving masks, and monsters surrounding a lone figure, laughing. But the newer ones look different, and use much more color than the older ones. I frown, remembering how Aizen was not too long ago at all, this must've been his way of venting his frustration and anger at those who tried to hold them back

"Hey Sosuke!" I shout loudly at him "What exactly do you want to talk about, and don't worry Aya, I'm not trying to steal him"

Aya pouts and crosses her arms, turning away from me

"Oh" Aizen says as he turns back to me and smirks "Just...something I need to know, and well can't ask you know"

Narrative coherence was in steady decline from the story's outset, but by the time it hits the Sternritter arc it has progressed past uncontrollable power creep and into stupefyingly, incoherent, inconsistent, bad writing.

For example, there is "My power is to literally make shit up!" kid and "Killing me only makes me stronger!" male valkyrie dude. The latter is especially funny because they never even come close to beating him, Bach has to kill him off himself so what is left of the story can move forward. And the kid who makes stuff up only loses because . . . well no coherent reason really. Somehow the fact that he was fighting against Zaraki causes his powers to kill himself, nevermind that he could have turned Zaraki's bones into cookies just by thinking about it.

Oh, and as for inconsistent? When the G13 are getting mugged for their Bankais and having their asses handed to them by sternritters, we eventually get the shocking revelation that hollow essence is anathema to Quincies and the hard counter to them. So just take a small dose of hollow essence and bam! Get your Bankai back. But wait, what about Opie Quilge? "J" for jail guy, remember? He freaking ate the Tres Bestia's hollow chimera beast, Ayon. Woops. Also, all the Vizard forget to pull their masks out for the entire Sternritter arc, even after they learn about the hollow thing.

Quite a few threads back I brought up the issue of how far down the "Kubo" hole HM is going to go. Kubo had some cool ideas for his setting and characters, but he makes a lot of mistakes too. I still strongly advocate for only using the most coherent parts of the story and jumping off from there. Trying to include and emulate all the garbage writing Kubo was slinging together towards the end is frankly not interesting to me--especially if you don't do anything to clean it up. The filler and movie stuff is also pretty weak. I suppose you can make a good story out of anything, though you are in for more of a challenge depending on what you start from.

For example, one of my major complaints with SSQ is its tendency of using elements from bad filler and movie arcs and doing so mostly verbatim without really expanding/improving on their concepts to make them more interesting. Maybe if more of an effort was made to better interpret things, it could have been much improved.
