You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and your conversation with your zanpaukuto Tenkotsuki has led given you an idea. She wants to teach you Hadō 99, an extraordinarily powerful spell called Goryūtenmetsu, so that you can match such spells in the event that Aizen Sōsuke has also managed to learn them. However this represents a level of kidō that's impractical even for most Captains, and will demand your entire focus and probably considerable risk just to learn... and having spent hours trying to reign in the considerable combined power of your own Bankai and resurrección has left you bordering on exhaustion. Now you've found yourself amid the glowing, steamy fumaroles of your 'inner world' where your zanpakuto has confided in you that for perhaps the first time she actually feels like she's pressed for time.

To hear such an admission from her, especially in such direct terms, was surprising.

With a grim chuckle, you come to the realization that there's a very simple solution for the problem. “You know how to cast Hadō 99 yourself, correct?”

“Of course,” Tenkotsuki replies calmly.

“Then I have an idea... if we used that form again, just for a few minutes, we could multitask.”

Tenkotsuki frowns at you, but seems to be considering your point carefully. “That is quite a serious amount of strain to place on yourself for such a purpose. Would you not merely be taking notes?”

“We would,” you nod firmly. “That's the idea at least. If I write down everything I can think of that'd help me learn Goryūtenmetsu, I could review it even while I'm recovering my strength. I assume there's a reason you want any 'practical' instruction to happen here?”

“The concepts are difficult to teach, and even more difficult to put into practice,” Tenkotsuki admits, glancing about the blasted fields of hardened lava surrounding her tree. “In this space we share a mind, at least to a certain extent... it facilitates our conversations and is more forgiving of failure.”

“Meaning you can keep me from burning my arm off or something similarly stupid?” you frown.

“I have a greater control over 'reality' here, at least as far as this place ever bothers to reflect such things,” Tenkotsuki explains thoughtfully. “However in the simplest terms yes, I can prevent you from burning off any limbs during the learning process.”

considering we had to stab ourselves with hollow juice to get back our arm last time, and I think we're down to one vial because we never gave it to Urahara to study, I think studying here is the best we can manage.

Not to mention there was a train-up period to get our arm back to full range of motion/flexibility.

“Well then that settles it,” you declare. “I'll take some notes on the outside and then I'll be back when I can.”

Then, in a move your zanpakuto clearly didn't anticipate, you embrace the fox-tailed woman.

“I've got you two. So long as that's true, what do we have to worry about?”

After a moment, Tenkotsuki returns your embrace.

“Come on, Rosa,” you begin only to find that your former inner hollow has already joined the embrace.

“Do not be excited,” Tenkotsuki warns you. “She did it simply to deny us the amusement of seeing her try to refuse.”

“Shut it, vixen,” Rosa grumbles.

When you break your jinzen you find that you have unconsciously released both your swords, your reiatsu still rotating slowly around you like the eyewall of a great storm. Now conscious of your surroundings your reign in that energy, only to find your daughter glaring down at you.

“I thought we were going to rest?” she asks you accusingly.

“I require pen and paper,” you reply, largely ignoring her complaint. “The quicker I accomplish this task the sooner I will be able to re-seal my zanpakuto.”

As Rangiku grumbles and attempts to humor your demands, you can't fail to notice that your would-be students look dissatisfied: Apacci is outright frustrated by her lack of progress, while Halibel is deep in thought.

“Yeah... no..” Apacci sighs, “that really didn't work, Lady Riku. Got any other bright ideas?”

You don't actually say anything to her in response, instead moving your fingers as if writing. You'll need to write down the proper characters of course, as well as the incantation... which in this case is absurdly long. Similar to many lesser kidō techniques there's also a trick to it that you'll need to remember, certain ways of focusing and carefully controlling your power within your own body which of all things are best described in a series of koans and poems. Despite knowing the meaning of each of these now you're certain that when Tenkotsuki and Rosa are separated from you once more it'll be a challenge to figure out what the hell you've written.

“Are you okay?” Apacci asks nervously after several long seconds of silence on your part. “You're startin' to freak me out here.”

“I am fine,” you insist quietly. “As for you, dear Apacci, your problem is that your own power has become foreign to you.”

“Wait... the hell is that supposed to mean?” Apacci asks in confusion as Halibel glances at you quizzically.

“You mean in using it as a resurrección?” she muses quietly, apparently having understood your meaning. “I see. Quite uncomfortable.”

Apacci turns to stare at Halibel as Rangiku returns to your side, furnishing you with your paper and pen. “Wait, Lady Halibel, don't you go off the deep end without me too!”

“I mean that by sealing your hollow nature within a zanpakuto you have changed what you are,” you explain carefully even as you begin writing down every piece of useful information you can think of. “That may well be the trick to realizing a second release state: as arrancar you simply have not had time to re-familiarize yourself with your own hollow powers, meaning that the logical solution is to remain in your resurrección forms for as long as you can maintain them.”

Having finally finished your project you allow your swords to reseal themselves once more, and return them to their sheathes at your hip. Then, after momentarily swaying on your feet from the cumulative exertion, you spare a glance at what you've written.

“It's practically gibberish,” you moan to yourself. “Some real “one hand clapping” type bullshit.”

You then notice Halibel, Apacci, and Rangiku all staring at you in disbelief. “What?”

“So how well can you maintain this sort of thing as-is?” you ask the two arrancar.

Apacci shrugs. “It's not like it's difficult or anything. It's just different.”

“Do you think you could fall asleep in resurrección?” you press.

“No,” Halibel replies definitively. “It would be too much of a distraction.”

You raise an eyebrow. “Would it be safe?”

Halibel nods softly. “Yes.”

Ah, is that so? That makes things easy.. these two really are fortunate, at least in one respect.

“Hey Apacci?”

The antlered arrancar turns to look at you, an obvious question in her eyes... which slowly grow unfocused as images of falling plum blossoms cloud her vision. She sways in place like a drunkard on an empty street, then keels over backwards with an unceremonious thump.

Halibel stares first at her centuries-long companion, then back at you. “What did you do?”

“A kidō called Hakufuku,” you explain, now satisfied that Apacci's antlers, fur, and fluffy little tail haven't disappeared. “I put her to sleep to see if her body would remain in that form.”

“And it appears she has,” Rangiku sighs wistfully. “Training even when she's asleep... damn, wouldn't that be nice?”

“It'd leave more time for paperwork during the day,” you smirk, and your daughter's dreamy expression turns sour immediately.

You nudge Apacci with your toe, channeling a small jolt into her with hakuda. “Rise and shine, sleepyhead.”

“Dunwanna...” Apacci grumbles. “Goway anriku...”

“Anriku?” Halibel muses. “Did she mean 'Aunt Riku'?”

Apacci's eyes fly open in an instant, then narrow at you. “That wasn't nice.”

“Sorry,” you grin down at her. “I know it's rude to pull a trick like that, but that spell works far better when its victim is surprised. If it's any consolation any arrancar can maintain resurreción in their sleep, provided they're forced to sleep.”

“I'm gonna take the time to rest,” you yawn, stretching your shoulders and earning a loud, satisfying pop for your trouble. “Come and find me later and I'll tuck you all in.”

“You really don't need to phrase it that way,” Apacci grumbles, dusting herself off.

“What kind of aunt would I be without getting in a little teasing?” you smirk, causing the arrancar to freeze up like she's a real deer... and you're behind the wheel of an oncoming big rig.

With a satisfied chuckle you excuse yourself, and start heading back towards your quarters only to find your legs carrying you in a somewhat different direction. Instead you end up at a small building outside the inner walls of the Division grounds, right near the small 'moat' which really serves as a giant koi pond and a place for people to relax while off duty. These are the only quarters which have a detachment of three shinigami standing watch nearby, more as a formality than anything else, but still unusual.

Stopping, you knock at the door.

A visibly surprised arrancar greets you after a moment.

“Captain, I wasn't expecting company!” Menoly exclaims before somewhat awkwardly waving for you to come inside. “Please, make yourself comfortable... it is your base of operations after all.”

You seat yourself in the small common area, furnished with two comfy chairs and a double-cushion couch clustered around a low wooden table. Not much to look at really, but it does have a certain coziness and an obvious lack of clutter. Very soon Neliel joins you in the commons, appearing to have just stepped out of the shower. Her green hair is still wet.

“I felt your reiatsu all day,” she mutters, sitting across from you. “Frightening, if I'm honest. Who was that other person who was with you?”

“Artemis,” you explain quickly. “I have to ask you something... do either of you know anything about arrancars with a second stage of release, like Bankai?”

“You mean a segunda etapa?” Neliel asks with a frown which you quickly match.

“Shit, you mean you actually have a name for it?”

“So far as I know it's only hypothetical,” Nel admits, leaning back and trying to arrange her hair so that it'll stay out of her face. “At one point Cirucci was convinced that was her way back into the Espada, but nothing ever came of it.”

“Why do you ask?”

“Halibel and Apacci are working on it,” you shrug, relaxing now that the possibility of a 'segunda etapa' being something you'll have to deal with has diminished somewhat. “I was curious to know whether the arrancar serving under Aizen had made any breakthroughs.”

“Most of us wouldn't even be arrancars without him,” Menoly admits, the very mention of the man causing her to scowl.

Come to think of it, you still don't know all that much about Menoly aside from the fact that she's been very passive since her capture. In that engagement she hardly got the chance to fight against you, so you don't even really know what she's capable of or what her life has been like.

>So, Menoly... tell me about yourself. And please, see if you can do it without mentioning that other one.

Damn, too late here.

I wanted to suggest we tell our arracnar friends to maybe try filling their Hollow holes more. It's probably not the key to Segunda Etapa, but I really want to see someone (Apacci) manage it.

And speaking of Apacci, did we ever tell her we, and by extension Tenkosuki, are proud of Apacci?

Cause we really need to let her know.

I'm actually somewhat saddened that Apacci considers us an Aunt when we called her our daughter earlier, but it's still nice.

“You still seem kind of down,” you comment, “even now that you're out of prison. Is your own lack of power bothering you that much?”

At first Menoly's eyes widen, shocked that you read her emotions that easily, but gradually she comes to accept the fact that it was really just that obvious. “So you know, huh? Yeah... it bothers the hell out of me. I never did feel good about having to rely so much on Loly, but now I just feel so damn useless.”

She glances up at you with tears stinging at the corners of her eyes. “It hurts.”

You sigh, looking to Neliel out of the corners of your eyes. “It's been a long day, some tea might help us all unwind a bit. But first, I hate to ask you, but would you mind showing me your resurrección?”

Menoly looks away. “It's hardly worth your time, Captain.”

“I think I'll be the judge of that.”

“Is that an order?” she asks.

“It's a request.”

After thinking about it for a few moments, Menoly eventually nods. “Okay, I'll show you what I mean.”

You follow her outside, and motion for the fireteam of shinigami to take a few paces back to get clear.

“That won't be necessary,” she grumbles, raising her right arm out at her side. “Flow, Savia.”

With a relatively modest release of reiatsu, more comparable to an average Lieutenant than any of the arrancar with whom you've grown close, Menoly's arm guards seem to liquefy and turn translucent. Their color shifts like bright amber entrapping her fists and arms up to the elbow, and her short crop of blonde hair seems to crystallize atop her scalp.

The changes don't seem to amount to much, but the way that her arms catch the fading light suggests that they're still entirely fluid.

She glances at you. “Well, there you go. This is Savia, my resurrección.”

I don't think it's something that can be achieved by actively attempting it. The hole is a representation of all that they're missing that would otherwise make them Human*, so it'd be a bit like telling a sapient animal to be human, it doesn't matter that he knows that being human is the key to bettering himself, he has no idea how he would go about that.

I figure just keeping them in a nurturing environment, with friends and an actual life beyond the Eat or Be Eaten rules of Hollow existence will eventually solve the problem on it's own.

“Surely you're underselling it,” you sigh, looking her up and down. “There must be some sort of trick to it that makes it nastier than you let on.”

“It's not...”

“Quit putting yourself down over it!” you snap, causing the arrancar to flinch instinctively. “So what if you don't have a stupid amount of raw power? You've got something, so just learn how to work with that!”

Now then,” you continue, lowering your voice. “Tell me what your resurrección does, Menoly.”

“This sap is a chemical irritant,” she explains, allowing some to begin dripping away from her right arm before retracting it back into the main glob. “It causes a painful rash and swelling wherever it makes contact, and it can't just be washed off because it gets stuck in the pores and hardens as soon as it leaves contact with me.”

“Those spikes on your scalp,” you observe. “You can fire them like darts, or arrows?”

Menoly nods, seemingly impressed that you figured it out based solely on what she's told you so far. “That's right. They don't hit with all that much force... too light, and they don't have enough velocity to make up for it. The most useful thing about them is the swelling and pain they cause.”

“Which is why I'd been working on improving my cero before... well...”

“Before Aizen sent you here to get captured?”

She nods gloomily. “Yeah... that. Loly's poison causes worse destruction when it hits, and my spikes aren't all that great... well, I guess after that madwoman who killed Luppi left mine are actually the best in that department. She may have had the right idea to bail early.”

“How long does it take to harden?” you ask, your mind already working on several possibilities for how you might employ a power like Menoly's.

“I can delay it for a few seconds,” Menoly offers, “but not by long. I can also cause it to harden almost instantly.”

“So you could coat someone else's weapon with it?” you continue. “Could be useful.”

“It wouldn't be a durable coating and could expose the wielder to the same toxin,” Menoly tells you, bending down and leaving a thin, clear coat of varnish that dries rapidly against a stone sitting nearby. “A hard enough blow when it's dried would turn it to dust, and that could get in your eyes or lungs... hey...”

“You never thought to use it that way, did you?” you chuckle. “See? You're already proving that you've undervalued your own ability. What, were you ridiculed or something just because your resurrección doesn't shoot lasers or involve a stupidly big sword?”

Menoly hangs her head.

“Oh,” you mumble, honestly taken aback. “Sorry if I brought up bad memories, but that seemed so juvenile I refused to take the possibility seriously.”

“It's fine,” Menoly tries to shrug her reaction off. “It's in the past. Her opinion doesn't matter anymore.”

So it was her partner that did it to her? Even if they were once friends, would it really hurt Menoly's feelings if you quietly executed that Loly bitch somewhere out of her sight? It sounds like she'd be better off if you did.

“Honestly, I think it's kind of cool!” you insist, changing the subject so fast you threaten to give yourself a bad case of whiplash. “Plant-based hollows are rare to begin with, and a chemical irritant is a really subtle ability. I've always been fond of techniques like that.”

“Really?” Menoly asks, astounded that she's being praised.

You nod. “I used to be an assassin after all, sneakiness is part of my repertoire and it's massively under-appreciated by some of my peers. Like poor Zaraki for example, not a subtle bone in his body... I know, because if he had one I'd probably have broken it at some point.”

“Keep at it,” you suggest. “I'd like you to study with Neliel for a while, but feel free to watch your cousins to see how they use their abilities. It may give you some inspiration.”

“Are you sure you want me watching your allies?” Menoly asks curiously. “Isn't that a bit too trusting, even for you?”

Your expression darkens somewhat at the notion, but you maintain a cheerful tone. “Why? You thinking about going back to Aizen or something?”

“Absolutely not!” she insists sharply before catching herself. “Sorry... it's just that I'm not used to people being nice, or trusting at all. It's so different.”

“Don't get me wrong,” you tell her quietly. “When Captain Shihōin and Captain Urahara first met you the first thing they did was check you for tracking devices and hidden sensors. And I've had my eye on you ever since, same way I keep track of all the prisoners by sensing minute shifts in their reiatsu.”

“I'm not that trusting, but I'm strong and I take precautions. That's why I can afford to show my enemies mercy, give them a chance to become my former enemies the way you have.”

You can feel your expression soften. “I'm glad that you've come this far. I'd muss up your hair in a casual show of affection at this point, but... you know. Spikes and chemicals.”

“Yeah... that,” Menoly mutters, actually embarrassed by the idea.

“So I actually have one request,” you continue. “While you're already in resurrección. It's not dangerous and you won't even feel it.”

“I guess?” she muses, clearly confused at what you might be planning. “What exactly are we talking about here...”

“Go to sleep!” you insist, locking eyes with the arrancar as you cast the same spell against her that you did with Apacci. The results are similar, though without her conscious control the sap produced by her resurrección begins to ooze all around her in a pool.

"I'm meeeltiiing!" you joke to yourself before prodding her with a stick to wake her up.

The next morning you hear a tapping at your door. You'd stumbled in fairly late after being 'treated' to Neliel's attempt at cooking, where you broached the subject of her and Menoly training together. Neliel seemed genuinely happy with the idea, which was reassuring to Menoly in turn... which was exactly the point of course. These two are in a similar position, and they're both fairly lonely and hurting despite your best efforts at making them feel a little less like unwelcome outsiders and more like 'long-term guests'. Maybe soon they'll even start feeling like allies, and open up a little more to your cohort and Division.

Maybe.

Or maybe Neliel will poison them all to death with her chocolate pancakes first.

That would suck.

The tapping, right. You roll out of bed with the bare minimum amount of coordination required to complete the maneuver without waking Yoruichi, and pull on a yukata. Down the stairs, flick the switch on the coffee maker, answer the door... one foot in front of the other.

“You look like hell, Captain Kusajishi,” Shunsui smiles from underneath his own bandages.

The mummy walks!” you hiss sarcastically. “Come inside, the coffee's on.”

“You look like you just woke up,” the Head Captain observes as he takes a seat at the table, setting his goofy hat aside.

“I did,” you admit. “Long day yesterday.”

“Lot of those recently,” he muses.

“So what brings you to my humble abode this early in the morning?” you ask.

“It's already just past nine,” Shunsui remarks with a shake of his head. “Most of the Seireitei's already hard at work.”

“Doing tasks I could finish in five seconds,” you shrug. “We're Captains. We don't have to try hard.”

“Well I'm glad you feel that way,” Shunsui smiles. “Cause as it happens there's a need to train some of our Lieutenant-level fighters up to get ready for winter, and now I know there's a lovely, young, talented Captain with plenty of free time on her hands.”

“You're begging for a black eye, Casanova,” you grumble.

This is correct. I have options for Renji and Izuru already. Anyone else have any ideas for the runoff?
>>1230452
Remember, Captain Casanova knows what most of Riku's peers do: that she has three subordinates whose Bankais are all but confirmed in flaming letters etched into the sides of the execution ground.

Outside of that the only "confirmed" Bankai is Renji, while anyone who's not a moron suspects that Ikkaku has one as well (Riku and Yoruichi, being more sensitive towards shifts in reiatsu, are certain of it).
>>
>>1230468
Either Nanao or Tetsuzaimon i guess, those are the only ones who come to mind, assuming you're asking for choices, although if you have that picture with the current lieutenants and captain and everything it might help with choosing. Also leaning more towards Tetsu since we know him already.

>Miyako Shiba

What about Nemu, Iba or Nanao? The thought of Captain Romeo actually being productive under Nanao's bankai would also be a fun thing to see in the future.

"I'll pick three and work them half to death," you suggest. "Any more and I won't be able to give them the... appropriate attention."

Shunsui nods, seemingly satisfied with the arrangement. "Lieutenant Ise is going to be training with me, however. Her situation is rather unusual, you see."

You nod, vaguely aware of the Ise clan's duties within the Seireitei. "Understood."

On one hand, Renji for unfinished business, Kotetsu as a battle medic is legit, and Shiba because family.

On the other hand...continuing to cockblock Zaraki by training his subordinates. Who are also pretty awesome.

Fuck it I want to see what Ayasegawa can REALLY do. With Ikakku for maximum teamwork, like we Riku and Yoruichi, one of their best tricks.

Yachiru is Kenny's sword spirit. She's with Kenny.

Okay, so Renji is confirmed as the first pick at 7, with Miyako as a clear second pick at 5. Which leaves a tie for third pick, for which I'll give a ten minute tie break round:

I can easily see this in an omake:
>Captain Shunsui calls for a Lieutenants assembly, where he announces three of them will be selected for special training, with the promise of attaining bankai a guaranteed result.
>Enter Riku as the instructor as she browses the lieutenants like a lion with the luxury of picking which meat to chew up.
>Riku hams up the selection as if she's the host of "Survivor" while channeling Sargent Hartman from Full Metal Jacket.
>>
Abarai is something of a running project for you, and getting him a step closer to his true Bankai can only be helpful in the long run. As for Kira, he's just... sort of tragic, to be honest. He was once a fairly bright young man, if a little on the shy side, but decades of being everyone's second pick for Lieutenant can't have been good to him. Momo's fairly good at kidō but has glaring weaknesses elsewhere, meaning she has a lot to improve on and could help lighten the load in getting Abarai's kidō up to par. Plus Rangiku seems fond of her, which is always nice to see.

That sounds like a nice, rounded out bunch of students to take as a group: they even knew each other back in their Academy days from what you understand, which suggests they'll work well together in this round of training assuming they haven't subsequently alienated each other.

Then you remember Miyako.

Your 'sister', somewhat estranged from the Shiba clan proper after the disappearance and presumed deathof her husband Kaien decades ago. He had been the head of the clan, and now Kaoru has taken that role leaving Miyako largely without a place. Kaoru and Kūkaku still aren't entirely sure how to begin to talk to her about it. She was also Jūshirō's Lieutenant, meaning she's been in command of Thirteenth Division since his 'death'. She could use the help in improving her abilities to help fill the gap left by her Captain, and to be perfectly honest you feel badly about her isolation from the rest of your adoptive clan.

“Actually,” you begin with a sigh, “I've changed my mind. Abarai, Hinamori, and Kira should probably stay as a matched set, since they're old friends from the Academy. They'll learn better together.”

“That makes sense,” Shunsui nods thoughtfully. “Glad to see you're taking this so seriously. But what did you change your mind about? That's three.”

“I want Shiba Miyako as well,” you insist, your tone rather firm as you swirl the coffee in your mug. “Family business as much as it is professional.”

“I was under the impression that Kaoru was considering that, but she also would like time to replace Lieutenant Ichinose,” Shunsui muses, somewhat somber as he mentions your former Commando's name. “He's still missing.”

“Kaoru's been slow to come to terms with it,” you frown, sipping the hot, bitter drink. “In a way it'd be easier if there was a body... same thing with Miyako for that matter. Two Lieutenants gone without a trace, it's actually a little disturbing.”

“I hope we figure out what happened some day,” Shunsui sighs heavily. “I was getting 'too old for this' a hundred years ago.”

After seeing Shunsui out you put on a fresh pot of coffee for your wife, who strolls through the kitchen in what some nobles would consider a scandalous state.

“Apparently I have Lieutenants to train,” you grumble.

“I heard,” Yoruichi muses, giving you a peck on the cheek. “For what it's worth I'm happy you requested Miyako. Poor woman's had it rough.”

“Not sure why that qualifies as a good thing,” you admit, wrapping an arm behind her waist. “I'll be putting her through even worse.”

“And she'll come out stronger for it,” Yoruichi points out. “And closer to you, I'll bet.”

“So you have a choice for Lieutenant?” you ask.

Yoruichi snags a cup of coffee and some toast before sitting at the table, then slicing off a bit of butter. “Omaeda.”

“Omaeda?” you ask, taken aback. “I thought I'd never see the day!”

“As much as I hate to admit it, he's got the reiryoku to make Lieutenant and his abilities have improved pretty quickly,” your wife explains, suddenly speaking as the Executive Commander of the Onmitsukidō again. “So yes, since Suí Fēng snagged Hisagi off you I'll be giving Omaeda a shot.”

>Why don't you bring Omaeda over here? We can train the five of them together.

“You really think he's got it in him?” you muse. “I guess he inherited something from his old man besides the heft and the money... like a work ethic.”

“Only to a certain extent,” Yoruichi muses. “His weapon's way less interesting too. I need to get dressed and break the news to him.”

“Do it gently,” you suggest before a thought crosses your mind. “You can bring him back here if you'd like. Two on five sounds like a much easier way to teach than one on four, and who knows? Maybe seeing what other Lieutenants can do will light a fire under his substantial ass.”

“That... just might work!” Yoruichi exclaims. “Why didn't I think of shaming him into making himself useful? That's what Suí Fēng used to do... I think I'll need another cup, my brain's still not working right yet."

“Well there you go,” you nod sagely. “It's a date.”

The first one to show up, interestingly enough, is Miyako.

“You... requested that I present myself?” she asks, having been waved past the guards. You can see that she's even wearing her Lieutenant's badge.

“Yes,” you nod sternly. “The Head Captain wants all our Lieutenants trained to be ready for winter, and gave me a choice of who I wanted to train.”

“And you chose me?” Miyako asks.

“I did, for a couple of reasons. I don't think I need to explain it any further than that.”

After a few moments of silence, Miyako nods in agreement. “Yes, I think I understand what you mean. So are we to be training alone?”

“No,” you shake your head. “Abarai, Hinamori, and Kira will be here, as well as Yoruichi and her new Lieutenant.”

“Well, the more the merrier I guess?” Miyako smiles nervously.

Awkward to be like this to Miyako, but I think this training deserves equal treatment so it won't seem preferential. In the end, she's still part of the family, just the it would be best to convey this in action once the training's done.

“So, what have the folks in your Division heard about me?”

A sigh of relief quickly gives way to obvious discomfort. “Well, the same a lot of people have heard I think? Hollows this, force of nature that. A couple of sins against God.”

“Well I was temporarily crowned the Queen of Hell, so I guess I can't dispute some of that,” you admit with a frown. “And what do you think?”

“Me?” Miyako asks. “Well, reality's always more complicated than that, right? Kaoru and Kūkaku seem to think highly of you too, and that counts for a lot.”

“Reality certainly did get complicated,” you sigh. “I didn't exactly know I was signing on for all this, but honestly I wouldn't have it any other way. Best thing that ever happened to me.”

“So, let's see where you stand, Miyako.”

“Wait, now!?” she panicks, glancing around the training grounds as if looking for an escape route or backup.

“Yeah, now!” you smile. “Before anyone else shows up!”

You draw Tenkotsuki and swing her downwards with your right hand, and Miyako sidesteps carefully to your left: just enough to avoid your attack but not so far as to step out of range for her own counter. She draws her zanpakuto and attacks in a single swift movement, her blade swiping past where your eyes would have been had you not suddenly ducked low to avoid her blade and leveled Tenkotsuki's point at her gut.

“You use Eishin-ryū as your basic style with borrowed elements from Nitō-ryū and Jigen-ryū,” you declare, based on her initial draw and its target. “Your next three moves would have been a feint at my right hip followed by a counterclockwise rotation to strike at my wrists and a downward slash to the base of my left shoulder adopting a Jigen-ryū tonbogiri stance, based on the positioning of your feet.”

Miyako stares at you in utter disbelief. “How could you possibly have known all of that?”

“Your technique was very good,” you commend her. “But I'm used to moving much faster than that, so I had time to think about it. That's all.”

“Now, how's your kidō?” you ask her. “What are the highest-level spells you can cast in hadō and bakudō?”

“I can cast Raikōhō and Rikujōkōrō,” she replies, sword still held where it's been since her first missed strike.

“And how high can you go without an incantation?”

“Haien and Rikujōkōrō.”

You frown at the repeat. “You're that much better at bakudō? That's a little unusual.”

“I had better training at it,” she admits. “My hadō has always lagged a little.”

“And your zanpakuto?” you ask, looking over her weapon. It's rather plain, with a six-sided guard that's rounded slightly at the corners and elongated towards the edge and spine of its blade.

“Its name is Yumesuzuri,” she tells you, a rare note of pride in her voice. “Would you like to experience its ability firsthand? It may be easier than trying to explain it.”

“Sure, if that's how you want to do it,” you nod. “Ready whenever you are.”

Miyako raises her blade into a standard ready position in front of her, point level with her gaze as she stares straight at you. “Scribe, Yumesuzuri!”

For a moment you think nothing has happened... but then you find yourself among friends and family, temporarily at a loss as to what you were doing or where you were mere moments before. Tenkotsuki is here, and Rosa too... she's getting Ichigo drunk for the first time while Isshin laughs his ass off with Kūkaku and Kaoru. Yoruichi is at your side, saying something to you...

… then you find a sheath in your left hand and a pressure against the blade in your right.

Coming to you find that Miyako has swung her sheath at your head only for you to catch it in your hand, which was a feint to open a slash at your exposed left side that you've managed to parry with Tenkotsuki's blade across your body. Miyako stares at you with wide eyes.

“I'd have understood blocking the sheath, but to correctly identify it as a feint in that state and block both attacks?” she muses, clearly amazed at your performance. “I wouldn't have thought it was possible! What exactly are you, Riku?”

So that's the trick? She can somehow use her zanpakuto to make a target daydream something that she comes up with, just enough to dissociate them from their surroundings. Nothing nearly so elaborate or powerful as Kyōka Suigetsu or as long-duration as Sakanade, but all the same rather effective in its simplicity.

“I'm a Captain with two other beings sharing my mind,” you tell her, then briefly you recall what she no doubt made you see with her zanpakuto. You simply smile and stretch your shoulders. “And I'm already living the dream.”

Questions:
To Queen:
>So... about them dice rolls. What are your thoughts on this unnatural string of crits?
>Dammit Queen I swear you're like trying to actively avoid doing housecleaning on pastebins. But I do get the fact that you have lots on your plate.
To the G-13 Lieutenants:
>What is your thoughts on the 4 Lieutenants chosen to be trained by Captain Kusajishi?
To Renji, Kira, and Momo:
>Give us your thoughts on being selected to undertake Riku's special Commando Curriculum. You're Guaranteed to get a Bankai out of it! And if you already have bankai, she'll whip you into shape so you aren't shit at bankai!
To Tia, Riku or Apacci:
>How often does Apacci pull a "deer in headlights" reaction? How long does it take for Apacci to snap out of it?
Apacci:
>That Deer in headlights reaction does a number on your neck muscles does it?
>rate your embarassment out of 10 when Riku found out how you view her.
>were you honestly looking forward to the idea of Riku putting you to bed whenever you feel sleepy?
Menoly:
>So how hard was it to get yourself out of the puddle of sap when you woke up?
>Were you surprised that you were still in resurrección when you woke up?
>So, how appreciative are you of your resurrección now that Riku's helped you brainstorm some useful techniques to go along with your innate abilities? Are you thinking of experimenting on the possibilities?
>I hope you're immune to your own sap.

Tenkotsuki:
>Have you tried reading your own notes? I know you like your statements like your calligraphy flowery and elegant, but this is Riku we're talking about.
Rosa:
>Do you have a sparknotes version of Tenkotsuki's instructions on Hado 99 or are you as lost as Riku comprehending the foxgirl's chickenscratch?
Tenko, Rosa, Riku:
>So describe your experience in the double release multitasking. Mentally and spiritually straining is obvious, but what was the sensation like?

Omake: Salt-Storm in Valhalla
>Artemis delivers the report Riku gave her detailing the Reishi disparity and the hidden truth to her cohorts.... and watches chaos equivalent to Ragnarok unfold as news reaches the other pantheons, in America Coyote is torn between laughing his ass off and/or throwing in his share of salt into the collective storm of anger. Since a shinigami's zanpakuto can have a solid physical manifestation, have there been any cases in history of someone having "intimate" relations with their sword?
What about gigai, is there possibly a black market for gigai of particularly attractive individuals, or even "special orders" for the exceedingly rich and powerful?
If not among the nobles, then what about the ronery scientists that make them?
>>
>>1232132
And don't even start to be like that, you know you've thought about it.
urahara literally made a blow-up gigai
>>
>>1232115
>things like that in the series that never got a proper explanation.

Like why Yoruichi is clearly too dark to be Asian. Or how Orihime and Rangiku don't break in half when they incline their bodies even twenty degrees forward. Or why the most Asian looking dude is a fat man who is largely considered nearly worthless. Or the fact that Rukia and Ichigo never fuck, I mean come on, hormones are hormones and they were living together for a rather extended period of time, everyone knows it would have happened.
>>
>>1232132
>Since a shinigami's zanpakuto can have a solid physical manifestation, have there been any cases in history of someone having "intimate" relations with their sword?

Probably Urahara.

Where do you THINK that three day bankai idea came from?

It was more of a happy side effect.
>>
>>1231547
Queen:
>It's... certainly something. A 29 is kind of hard to argue with.
>It gets worse: now I'm also sleep-deprived.
G-13 Lieutenants:
>General relief mixed with a healthy amount of concern for the lives of their comrades.
Renji, Kira, and Momo:
>R: I kind of expected it to be honest. She seems to enjoy meddling with me.
>K: Shocked and worried... though I guess I was the one who was looking for a way to get stronger.
>M: Kind of excited. I expect it to be tough of course, but Rangiku was right: her mother really isn't a bad person, and there's absolutely a reason they're both so strong.
Tia:
>I have noticed it occasionally, though it only lasts a few seconds.
Apacci:
>Not really.
>Maybe a six. It's more the way she heard me saying it.
>... you will say NOTHING.
Menoly:
>Not very, it just took some time to get it out of my outfit.
>Absolutely, though I guess that was the point wasn't it?
>Don't worry, if I weren't I'd have been screaming in agony that whole time.
Tenkotsuki:
>It is not about the form but rather the content. The way *we* understood things and the way *I* understand them are rather different I fear.
Rosa:
>I have no idea what the hell that spell is in the first place, so don't look at me. I just work here.
Riku:
>It's like... well, it's like kensho. Suddenly knowing more than you ever realized you knew, as if the whole world has suddenly become comprehensible all at once. It's wonderful and terrifying, strange but intimately familiar.

>>1232132
Not in recorded history, no. And the black market for any "military" technology would be extremely limited by the Onmitsu control over the supply side. Anyone who could possibly furnish such items would be flagged early on. Even Urahara has his own case file despite Yoruichi's personal confidence that he's not that much of an asshole.

As for gigai, the only way the Reigai uprising even happened in the first place is that they had access to the Dangai records: which are EXTREMELY restricted and incomprehensible to anyone who's not specially trained or Urahara. Even Mayuri might not fully understand how to manipulate them.
>>
>>1232704
>or Urahara.

I love how all bullshit is somehow understandable to Urahara.

>"Yeah I made this paper which makes you into a cat."
>How?

>"I invented and created a rock that can break down the barriers between shinigami and hollow!"
>How and why?
>"SCIENCE!"

Not bad, for such an impromptu event. You've managed to learn that Miyako stands up to the Shiba reputation after all, with an acceptable talent for kenjutsu and kidō worthy of recognition as a Lieutenant and an effective shikai at her disposal in Yumesuzuri. Though you also suppose that inducing daydreams has its limitations... as with Kyōka Suigetsu it no doubt has a trigger of some manner. You also suppose there are some serious limitations to the effects of its dissociation, perhaps that Miyako must correctly tailor the daydream to her opponent.

“Do you do this often?” Miyako asks you, leaning in a little closer to peer at you like a mother trying to determine if her child is sick or merely faking. “Deliver a punchline then zone out, I mean?”

“Occupational hazard,” you shrug. “I was digesting what I learned from that exchange, trying to figure out what sort of training would serve you best.”

“I see,” she sighs, with a rare smile tugging at her lips. “You remind me a little of Captain Ukitake... he never stops thinking either.”

The present tense. As if he were still alive: which for all you know he could be again if things don't go awry. That optimism is good, it'll serve your adoptive-sister-in-law well.

It isn't long before you sense the arrival of another Lieutenant.

“I've been expecting you, Lieutenant Hinamori,” you declare, not even bothering to face her until after you offer a greeting. “Welcome back to my Division. I trust that the trip here was pleasant enough?”

“Am I only the second one here?” she muses, glancing at Miyako. “And I thought I was going to have to apologize for being late.”

“You're actually a few minutes early,” you observe. “Good form.”

“Thank you, Captain,” Hinamori bows respectfully. “Captain Ichimaru always insisted on arriving a few minutes early... not too early as to draw attention to yourself, but to never risk being late.”

“Gin's got a certain wisdom to him, always has,” you muse. “So, I take it you understand why you're here?”

“The Captain explained it to me,” she replies. “Says you wanted to train me for the battle coming this winter. I suppose you wanted to bring Renji and Izuru here too?”

“Now then, Lieutenants?”

Both women look to you, anticipating what you could possibly be about to order them to do.

“Spar,” you order. “Go easy, no sense wasting all your reiatsu before the others even get here.”

“Yes, Lady Riku,” Miyako inclines her head.

Momo looks a little more uncertain, probably aware that Miyako has had a difficult time... she probably remembers Kaien at least in vague terms, and knows that he and Miyako were once married. She definitely understands what it means for a woman in that position to effectively take over the running of a Division due to the death of their Captain. “I suppose if it's an order I have no choice then, Lieutenant Shiba?”

“It is,” Miyako confirms, drawing Yumesuzuri and holding it low at her side in wakigamae to disguise its precise length. “We'll begin on the Captain's word. Agreed?”

“Agreed,” Hinamori nods, seemingly more determined as she draws Tobiume and holds it in the low stance of gedan no kamae, with the point angled downwards in an invitation to attack.

“You're serious?” Miyako muses quietly. “Very well, I'll oblige you.”

The older Shiba brings her sword down upon Hinamori, who raises Tobiume to parry only to find the very tip of Yumesuzuri glancing against its blade. But Momo sticks to her plan and raises her hand to cast the kidō she'd been preparing.

“Hainawa!”

The chains quickly entangle Miyako's arms and sword, to which she responds almost immediately with a spell of her own.

“Tsuzuri Raiden!”

The surge of electricity travels along the length of Lieutenant Hinamori's spell and forces her to release it and respond with a similar escalation.

“Snap, Tobiume!”

“Scribe, Yumesuzuri!”

In that moment a newcomer tries to interfere... and you stick your foot out to catch his toes mid-shunpō.

“Renji?” Hinamori asks, her features worked up in confusion. “What was that?”

“I... thought you were fighting?” Renji offers lamely, his face still burned from the speed of his arrival. “Were you and Lieutenant Shiba sparring?”

“I'd forgive you for making that mistake,” you shrug nonchalantly. “Miss Miyako here doesn't often train with members of other Divisions I take it.”

Miyako shakes her head. “No, nor am I known for picking fights.”

“Sorry,” Renji grumbles apologetically.

“So that makes three,” you muse. “Good. Miyako, your kidō suffered slightly for casting without the incantation but you handled yourself well otherwise. Momo, you made your plan a little too obvious, especially against someone whose kenjutsu is more advanced than yours. Either improve your kenjutsu or make your plans sneakier next time.”

“Understood!” Hinamori replies, sealing her sword. “Thank you, Lieutenant Shiba.”

“I didn't realize you were that good with kidō,” Miyako replies. “Had I known I might not have been so quick to attack.”

“Now then,” you continue, turning your attention to the new arrival as he rubs the dirt off his face. “What do we do with you...”

“Hold my stuff,” you tell Miyako, shrugging off your haori and handing her your zanpakuto for a moment leaving you with nothing more than your keisen uniform and a few of Yoruichi's anken.

“What?” Renji asks, staring at you blankly as you partially disrobe and visibly disarm yourself.

“Come at me with your Bankai,” you order.

Renji's eyes widen. “Come on, Captain! You know I can't do that when you're not even armed!”

“I don't need to be armed to defeat your half-baked Bankai,” you insist with a quiet confidence. “So now that I've insulted you, you won't hold back I take it?”

“You've got that right,” Renji grumbles, having been rubbed the wrong way by your boasting. Well, for you're purposes it's the exact right way. “Bankai: Hihiō Zabimaru!”

In a massive burst of crimson reiatsu Zabimaru releases, and Renji is surrounded by the giant, winding spine of a great serpent with a fanged head and red mane. It lets loose a screaming challenge as you stretch your shoulders.

“Sōkō Shunkō,” you reply, feeling the familiar surge of reiatsu erupt from your shoulders and arms before looping back through your veins, leaving a cool static tingle across your skin where the energy cycles.

Renji's eyes narrow. “That's quite a technique, Captain. But surely you don't think you can...”

“Beat you with it?” you complete his thought, suddenly standing directly in front of him. An uppercut to his chin sends him reeling, and he desperately tries to bring down his massive weapon on you. But this too you respond to with an almost casually efficiency. First you focus not on the hardened vertebrae but the reiatsu between them, thrusting an equal amount of reiatsu at it.

“Hanki!” you growl, your technique instantly negating any power Zabimaru had behind it before delivering a roundhouse kick powerful enough to jolt the vertebrae apart from one another. You use that opening to fall upon Renji again, following through with your kick and springing off that foot to approach with hirenkyaku which leads instantly into an axe kick to his right shoulder. The joint dislocates and forces Renji to the ground, where he quickly switches the bone-like hilt to his left hand and flash-steps clear.

“Damn,” he grunts as the spine coils around him defensively with the skull taking up a position directly above him. “Try this then, Hikotsuk Taihō!”

The spaces between each pair of vertebrae glow an angry red as the weapon charges a powerful blast, like a cero launched from its fang-filled mouth.

“Kengen!” you counter, blasting the corona of energy surrounding your body right back at the blast. Soft enough not to detonate it immediately, but powerful enough to reverse its course...
>1/2
>>
>>1233554
>within two seconds his body has gone numb and his dominant arm was dislocated
I'm suprised he's still trying, good on him.
>>
>>1233554
The vertebrae are blasted far and clear of Renji himself, some embedding into nearby buildings and the rest littering the ground like the aftermath of some horrible farm accident. Having cleared the way you finish the bout by palming a visibly stunned Renji's face with your right hand and slamming him headfirst into the ground. Not hard enough to knock him out, at least not with his Bankai released, but enough to send a very clear message: that it's over.

Meanwhile, Kira Izuru watches in horror from the sidelines as his friend, who's muchstronger in a straight fight, gets pounded into the ground like a tent peg.

“I should have listened to my mother,” he opines.

“Always a good policy,” you agree, “but since you didn't, and you're here...”

“Stay here like a good boy, Renji,” you order, leaving the fallen Lieutenant where he lies. “I'm gonna deal with your friend Kira here.”

“Yes ma'am...” Renji groans weakly.

>>1233647
how many times does he have to strike our sword before it's too heavy to wield, i wonder.
because we're really, really, really strong.
>>
Two questions. Is Kira gud enough to launch a projectile by hitting it with his sword several times? Or ricocheting a tiny object around in the square hook before flinging? And two, are objects created by bakudo physical enough to be affected by gravitational shenanigans before they make contact?
>>
>>1233678
That implies we fail to teach him anything if we don't crit. Progress is progress. Don't be so negative.
>>
>>1233681
All you need to do is make him tap Kenny's sword a couple dozen times and watch as he swings a WMD around. I would say bump Capt. Doggo's bankai but because of his shenanigans that would make his actual body heavier too. Honestly a shitty bankai. No one cared who he was after he lost the mask.
>>
>>1233702
I don't see why he makes full swings. All he's gotta do is touch the sword to the object he wants, so why not cross the bare minimum distance?
Essentially rapidly "vibrating" his sword against an object to make contact with it as many times as possible in a short span, rather than trying to inflict any actual damage.
>>
>>1233647
“Wipe that pathetic look off your face and fight me,” you grumble, glaring daggers at the fourth Lieutenant of the day. “I won't even use Shunkō.”

“Raise your head, Wabisuke!” Kira declares, his tone betraying his feelings. He finds this situation terrifying, facing down a Captain in single combat after having watched another Lieutenant's Bankai get smashed to bits with those same fists that are about to turn on him.

To his credit the first swing almost catches you off guard: his shunpō is actually quite good. But instead of dodging you allow him to hit you in the shoulder, barely even registering the impact before he hits you a second time on the left ribs, before you catch his blade bare-handed on his third swing.

No matter how hard Kira tries Wabisuke refuses to budge.

“You don't actually know how much eight times your own bodyweight is like, do you?” you ask calmly.

“Of course not!” Kira admits indignantly, still trying in vain to wrench his blade free.

“I weigh fifty-seven kilograms soaking wet,” you tell him. “Meaning that after three doublings I weigh four hundred and fifty-six.”

He looks at you with wide eyes, understanding where this line of reasoning is going to end up.

“I bench-press more than that. To have it spread evenly throughout my body is a mild discomfort... and I don't even have to move to hurt you back anyway.”

“Hadō 11: Tsuzuri Raiden!”

The electricity surges through Wabuske's blade, shocking Kira's arms even as he releases the hilt immediately after realizing your plan. Again, he's fairly quick... just not enough, even when you've been slowed this much.

“To learn kenjutsu without knowing pain leads to poor kenjutsu,” you mutter, tossing Wabisuke to the ground next to Kira where he's rolled to his knee. “Likewise trying to rely on an ability without truly knowing its effects leads to poor zanjutsu.”

“You all show some promise in your own strengths, but you have a lot of work ahead of you,” you address the four Lieutenants as a group. “Now, it's time for you to see what a Lieutenant can do when they've succeeded in combining all your respective strengths.”

With a smile, you welcome another newcomer to the training field, one whose presence at your side is always welcome and whose assistance you have long valued above damn near any other.

“Rangiku, it's finally time you showed your cohort what you can really do.”
>>

Actually just an excuse to see how the Femritters are holding up as it's been a while since there's a peep on their current situation. The arrancars already got some nice coverage at least.

And if that's not in the cards, maybe something along the lines of Marenoshin's time with his son before he departs for Yoruichi and Riku's joint training? With Omaeda's littlest sister worrying about him and what he's about to get into.

No, some people are more skilled at some things than others.
Say kenny has more reiatsu than yoruichi. He still can't use hakuda or shunko or anything like that because he's shit at anything that isn't swinging a sword, so yoruichi would win the shunpo contest simply because she's better at it, but he'd probably win the "deepest cut" contest for the same reason.

She used to hate us because of her past life, but eventually got over that.

Currently she holds a lot of respect for Riku due to a combination of superlative swordsmanship and obvious care for her subordinates. We kind of kicked her out of a rut and gave her a chance to come to better terms with her past. We might not be friends, or even particularly close, but we have .

On the other hand we're a serious anomaly, we have divine powers and a power bloc that includes enough Captain class fighters to match up against the rest of the Gotei 13. We've kept much of this secret for a long while and don't listen that closely to authority. The consequences of our actions, inadvertent or not, shake up Soul Society. And if shit hits the fan, she's extremely high up on the list of people that would be called in to take Riku out.

Yes, I already know this.

I meant to say that I thought you're attempting to introduce a newer, soon-to-be-followed tradition (namely wine cellar raids) to commemorate Shunsui taking the mantle of Head Captain.
>>
>>1240443
Originally I was thinking of a way to keep Riku stay as cheeky Riku while justifying Shunsui and Starrk's presence... but now that you mention it... That would be a fun tradition... but it wouldn't involve the students/proteges. in an espionage mission of the fun type.

Bambietta Basterbinne is drunk.

Which in and of itself isn't an astonishing thing, since lots of people get drunk every day and the Seireitei is just like any other place in that regard. But today something's different.

“Hey, you okay?” Captain Kusajishi asks, clearly concerned at what she's seeing. The amount of alcohol she's seen disappear in such a short time is normally an easy indicator that something's wrong with the person making it disappear. “Something happen? We're supposed to be relaxing.”

“You knucklehead,” Bambietta slurs. “This is relaxing.”

“No, Bambi, this is escaping,” Riku counters, her wits still about her despite the drink. “The only question is from what?”

Bambietta sighs dramatically, glaring daggers at her defenseless glass of whiskey. “You know what that brat of an Ishida had the balls to tell me?”

“I can think of a few things,” Riku replies. “Mind filling me in?”

“We got to talkin' about the other Sternritter,” she grumbles, “an' he had the balls to say they 'knew the risks'.”

Riku blinks silently. “Wait, did they not?”

“Some of them did,” Bambietta admits. “But that's not the point... y'know how the others used to kinda follow me? Lil, Meni, Candi... even Gis-stain. They're only in this situation cuz of me.”

“You recruited them, didn't you?” Riku realizes sadly. “That's why they followed you, and why you feel so responsible for them.”

“Wouldn't you feel responsible if it were Halibel, Starrk, Apacci, or Mirai down in those cells?”

“I guess I would,” Riku admits. “But then again I kinda suspected the truth was something like that... what I really wanna know is how you got into all this.”

“It's not really that interesting,” Bambietta tries to brush the question off.

“Come on, don't be that way,” Riku insists. “Tell us a story?”

“I'm not your mother,” the Sternritter grumbles.

“You're old enough to be.”

Facing down an angry stare, Riku sighs. “Really, I want to know more about the situation. There's a lot I don't understand because it was so long before Rosa's time.”

“Guess that's a fair point,” Bambietta sighs, shifting uneasily. “It was a long time ago... you're a shinigami. For you a century is a reasonably long time, for me it'd be an entire lifetime. And I was born some eleven lifetimes ago.”

“So start simple,” Riku suggests. “Where were you born? Where'd you grow up?”

“I was born in Zamora, a fortified city in the Kingdom of León,” Bambi sighs, speaking her words slowly as if straining to remember each detail. “I don't remember what year, but it wasn't a good time to be there. The city changed hands several times between the Spanish and the Muslim kingdom of al-Andalus.”

“So you were Spanish? Guess that accounts for the name.”

“Not so sure myself,” Bambietta shrugs. “Candi forgot hers a long time ago, so maybe I did too. Anyway, Zamora was razed when I was eighteen, fell to the tyrant Almanzor.”

“Almanzor?” Riku frowns. “The hell kinda name is that?”

“His full name was Abu Aamir Muhammad bin Abdullah ibn Abi Aamir, al-Hajib al-Mansur,” Bambietta recounts, before spitting onto the smooth stones of Riku's private garden retreat. “Sorry 'bout that, but it beats puking at hearin' the name again.”

“Well, I guess so,” Riku shrugs. “So this ruler's attack on your hometown killed you?”

Bambietta shakes her head. “It would've if it weren't for that man choosing to make his appearance.”

“Yhwach?”

Bambi nods. “The very same. He stepped in to spare my life, used his reishi weapon to kill my attackers when I could not. 'Barely human' he called them, unworthy of our protection.”

“And what'd he offer you in exchange?” you ask, already anticipating where this story must have gone.

“A people worthy of my protection,” Bambietta tells her comrade, staring from the balcony down at the rock she'd spat at. For a moment she steps out into the garden and flips the rock over, then nods to herself and takes up her seat once more. “It sounded like a win-win at the time. Still sounds like a good thing now that I'm sitting here. But reality's a bitch sometimes... I didn't know what I was getting' into.”

“I was given the blood,” she recounts. “When we fought the Gotei 13 back then I fought too, but it wasn't enough. Our Sternritter weren't... bloodthirsty enough, I guess. And so we fled to lick our wounds in the shadows and wait for a second shot.”

“And that's when you were told to go recruit others,” Riku guesses. “To make up for your losses.”

Bambietta nods. “I was told to find quincy who had a lotta potential, but who were desperate. Like Candi... found her in a whorehouse.”

“You saved her from prostitution?” Riku asks, honestly a little impressed as she downs another sip of Scotch.

Bambi shakes her head, a faint frown on her face. “No, nothin' like that. I think even then she enjoyed the attention. I found her after the Great Furisode fire, burned almost to death with nothin' but her Blut keepin' her alive.”

“Crap,” Riku winces at the mental image. “Were they all as fucked as that when you found 'em?”

“Pretty much. It's hard to say no when the alternative's death... an' after recruiting them they tended to just follow my lead. Kind of amazed they even talk to me.”

“And do you regret it?” Riku asks, watching carefully over the edge of her glass.

For a minute or two Bambietta thinks the question over, eventually coming to a tentative conclusion. “No, I don't regret doin' what I thought was right at the time. What I regret is not knowin' it was a mistake 'till it was too late.”

“Ya really didn't miss anythin' worth bein' there for,” Bambietta sighs, setting aside her empty tumbler.

“I see,” Riku nods, seemingly satisfied as she loops an arm under Bambi's shoulder and around her back to help her to her feet. “Come on, let's get you tucked in. You shouldn't mess up your brand new brain like this.”

“Ya think?”

Riku offers a knowing smile. “I get the feeling once this is all over they'll be looking to you as an example again.”

“You think?” Bambi asks, slowly putting an arm over the Captain's shoulders to keep herself upright more easily. “After all that?'

“Yeah,” Riku reiterates. “I really think. Just try not to puke on my carpet before then?"

"Easier said than done," Bambietta chuckles grimly. "But I'll try."

d'aww... sweet sweet comradarie formed over booze and misery.

Question:
>Does Riku get Asian flush syndrome (red-face drunk) when she's drinks?
>>

>that brings us up to Twelfth Division's Captain Komamura Sajin, but I mistakenly listed him as still being in command of Seventh and nobody called me out on it.

Gotta be honest, I still don't get this joke. Isn't the 12th still the Science Division here, as it was in canon?

Liking the omakes, and especially Bambi's backstory over booze. I'm glad we fixed her.
>>
>>1245073

Why they call it asian it's is very common in cold European countries were people have pale skin?

The internet is racist!
>>
>>1245158
Asian flush isn't just about the color, it's about differences between metabolizing alcohol to acetaldehyde to acetic acid that leads to increased acetaldehyde buildup. And the mutations leading to it are not at all prevalent outside of East Asia.

Other people can flush when drinking alcohol, but there's more work and alcohol involved.

Tons of Captain shuffling happened. Refer to the pic here >>1230514 for the most up-to-date line-up.

But yeah, now that you pointed it out, it's surprising that Urahara and Komamura haven't swap divisions yet here.
>>
>>1245282

Probably politics.

No one wants Hat And Clogs to have a whole division to play Mad Doc with.

Plus a captain that won't go all "SCIENCE!" would help to moderare the crazies that went wild during Mayuri term as a captain.

The openings were filled a little differently a hundred years ago, and the three independent branches were gradually brought back under the direct oversight of the Gotei 13 after Aizen's departure.

“What're you doing?”

Rangiku glances over your shoulder at the computer screen, which is full of colorful projectiles. “Playing a game.”

“It's like watching a rave inside a commercial dryer,” she muses. “Hell of a way to spend an evening.”

“In the living world these're called danmaku shooters,” you explain, gingerly weaving your character through a curving wave of hot death. “This one's Mystic Square, part of a series.”

“And you lose if one of those hits you?”

You shrug. “This is on Lunatic, so it's not always this bad. But if you know where the hitboxes are and you learn the patterns it's actually not that hard.”

Rangiku sighs. “It just looks like a bunch of nonsense to me.”

“How do you control Byakkokiri?” you ask.

Rangiku takes a moment to try to process the thought. “What do you mean, how do I control it?”

“Do you always control it actively?” you clarify. “Or do you sometimes let her move it herself? Or does it end up static when your focus is somewhere else?”

“Come to think of it, Haineko keeps it moving,” Rangiku muses, trying to recall everything she can of the last time she used the technique. Since it was during a battle you're not surprised that it's taking some effort: you've trained your daughter the same way you were trained, and so certain basics about her own fighting style will have long since become second-nature. “But I've never given though to how she moves it.”

“With a fighting style like yours,” you continue, using a bomb to clear the screen, “pattern recognition is a critical skill. The way I figured out this silly game is also how I figured out how to fight against Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. I shouldn't have to tell you how that went for Byakuya.”

“Not well,” Rangiku sighs while you put the game on pause. “So you're saying I need to figure out where my own weaknesses and blind spots are?”

“Exactly,” you nod confirm, turning your chair to face her. “You know why I chose you to be my Lieutenant.”

Rangiku quietly pulls up a chair of her own. “Do you mind if I watch you play for a while, Captain?”

You smile back at her... it's a nostalgic feeling, it's been a hundred years since your daughter used to watch you train in rapt attention.

“Of course not, Lieutenant.”

>Kenpachi wants to fight.
this feels like a good thing and a bad thing.
>Unohana quietly wishes the title Kenpachi was tied to skill and not bloodlust.
well this makes it feel more like a bad thing now that Unohana's thinking like that.
>Renji is contemplating his fear of failure.
>Hinamori is contemplating her hesitation regarding kenjutsu.
>Kira is contemplating his own mortality.
>Dordoni's rage has quieted. Now he's just broody.
>Shinji is now in the same camp as Urahara: he appreciates you, but knowing what you are makes trust difficult.
>Lisa considers herself deeply indebted to you. She also may have been blushing a bit when you carried her out of Hell.
welp. someone's hot for Riku.

>Omake: The Exile Returns
“Couldn't you be a little quieter?”

Shihōin Yoruichi, who long ago gave up the title of Captain, smirks at you despite her obvious pain and exhaustion. “Good morning... sleep well?”

“Not really,” you admit. “Frankly I'm probably more tired than you are.”

“And who was the one who kept you fed this whole time?”

You smile warmly. “Thanks for that. I'd have exhausted my own reiatsu decades ago otherwise.”

“Aren't I just like a dutiful wife?” Yoruichi jokes. In response you hold her carefully around the shoulders and guide her to the ground. She makes no effort to resist.

“Rest. We can get caught up later, dear... let me handle this for now.”

“Right,” she nods. “I've got something I've been waiting to give you.”

“Is it a ring?” you smile down at her.

“You say that like it's a joke...” she mutters before passing out.

Now you turn your attention to Sōsuke Aizen, the traitor Captain from a hundred years ago. He looks like he's done something with his body... ah, he's fused with a source of shinreiryoku not unlike a Hoshi no Tama. But even at this level, it's hardly a problem: your opening shot from Tenkotsuki pierced through his arm with ease even when she's sealed.

“And you would be Lieutenant Kusajishi?” he muses, staring at you with empty purple eyes. “A Lieutenant has no place in this battle any longer. The time when you could have made a difference has passed.”

“Shatter, Kyōka...”

In response you put another shot through his hand as he tries to release his zanpakuto. You're not entirely sure it worked, but no matter: it illustrates your point perfectly.

“You seem to have ignored my illusions,” Aizen peers at you lifelessly. “How might such a thing be possible?”

“Let me answer that question with a question,” you reply calmly, staring down Tenkotsuki's sight base at your hated enemy. “If you were a Captain-class fighter with nothing better to do than improve your own powers, what would be the optimal means of training?”

“Such concerns are beneath my present station,” Aizen replies, his strange eyes narrowing. “I have long since left my limitations as a shinigami behind. How would you manage your time, Lieutenant?”

“It's quite simple,” you insist with a grin. “Yoruichi here had to feed me reiatsu, trim my hair, and see to my needs for one simple reason... I've been in jinzen for a hundred years, Aizen.”

For the first time you see a trace of emotion in Aizen's eyes: fear.

Good.

“Bankai: Higeki no Ōjo...” you declare, nine spectral tails of black reiatsu coalescing behind your back.
