You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were being confronted by what was essentially the freaking Japanese clone of Portland. Ponytail and piercing glare and all.

"Ummmm, can I help you?" You raise an eyebrow as Anna scampers behind you to hide from her gaze. You can't help but think that this ship looked familiar...

"No, not really." The Japanese cruiser continues to stare you down. "I just find it hard to believe Yamato-senpai would find such an interest in an American shipgirl. What makes you so worthy of her attention?"

Waitaminute, now it was starting to come back to you. You vaguely remember seeing her at Samar! Yahagi, was it?

From what you've read, her extreme interest in Yamato's affairs suddenly made a lot more sense.

"What she sees in me?" You muse.

"Ah, well, there's something else!" You give an evil grin as you stand on your toes to whisper in her ear. "We're sleeping together now, you see~."

A loud and meaty SMACK rings through the dining hall, as well as Anna's horrified gasp. Yahagi's attack is so quick, so ferocious, that not even your early warning radar could spot it in time.

A sharp pain blooms across your cheek like a wildfire as you're left stunned from the hit, more from surprise than actual pain. You see Yahagi's face, contorted with pure, unadulterated rage. Guess your provocation worked a little TOO well.

Not to mention, you could see some of the crowd in the are were starting to look curiously at the two of you. You don't think that they really saw or knew what was going on, but their attention had been drawn. In addition, you could see Yamato hurrying over in concern, at least as fast as her restrictive kimono would let her, completely ignoring the gaggle of well wishers that had been surrounding her.

Anna meanwhile was still cowering behind you.

You manage to keep your cool, despite every instinct within you screaming to hit her back. You just stare calmly back at Yahagi.

"You hit me." You grunt.

"For disrespecting Yamato-senpai." Yahagi growls, her hand clenching into a fist now. "To imply that she would debase herself like that-"

"Yahagi, Hoel!" Yamato hisses as she finally manages to reach the both of you, concern clearly rolling off of her. "What is going on here?!"

"Oh, nothing happened!" You grin to try to allay Yamato's concerns. "Just me and Yahagi having a bit of a disagreement, that's all.

"Then why is poor Annapolis look so terrified?" Yamato pats Anna on the head in an effort to calm her before giving a stern look to Yahagi. "Yahagi, I thought I told you to be more friendly with our American allies."

"But, but she spreads lies and rumors that you lie in bed with her!" Yahagi protests.

"But that's what we actually do on occasion." Yamato tilts her head in confusion. "So what?"

Yahagi just locks up and turns white as a sheet. It takes a few more seconds before Yamato realizes what she had actually just said and she turns as pink as her kimono.

"N-n-no! That's not what I meant!" Yamato insists. "I just consider Hoel a good friend! That's all!"

"I have failed in my duty to protect Yamato-senpai's purity..." Yahagi croaks, still completely out of it.

"Yahagiiiiiii!" Yamato wails as she tries to shake the cruiser back to her sense.

"W-what is going on...!?" Anna whimpers.

"I honestly don't know." You sigh.

However, Yamato's outburst and Yahagi's antics are starting to draw more attention from the crowd now...

You grab both Yamato and Yahagi's hands and quickly tow them out of the spotlight, past all the curious dignitaries and shipgirls and to the one place in the whole building where there was any sort of privacy.

The bathroom, of course.

Anna follows close behind as quickly as she can manage as you shove both Yamato and Yahagi into the womens' bathroom, and you slam the door shut to discourage any followers.

"Ooooookay, that could have gone better." You sigh.

"Y-you shouldn't joke around about Yamato like that!" Anna pouts, despite being out of breath.

"N-no, the fault is all mine." Yamato bows profusely. "Yahagi had only recently come back from assignment in the north, and I may have forgotten to update her on... recent events."

"You never told me you ELOPED with a destroyer!" Yahagi groans. "And an American one, at that!"

"For the last time, Yahagi." Yamato sighs and karate chops Yahagi's forehead. "Hoel is just a friend of mine. One who doesn't avoid or fear me because of my... position. So I would very much appreciate it if you would consider Hoel a friend, as well."

"R-really?" Yahagi pauses and looks at you.

"Besides, I know you have a bit of a soft spot for destroyers, so I know you'll like her if you give her a chance." Yamato chuckles.

"Y-Yamato-senpai!" Yahagi goes from white to red in almost an instant.

"Just give it a try, for me~?" Yamato gives a charmful smile.

"I-I suppose, if it's Yamato-senpai's order..." Yahagi mumbles and hold her hand out to you. "But don't think this forgives you for what you said earlier."

"Aw crap!" You groan as you check the time on your phone. "They're already starting! We gotta go, Anna!"

"Oh no!" Anna gasps.

"You two go on ahead, then!" Yamato waves cheerfully. Yahagi merely gives you both a slightly respectful nod.

You and Anna quickly make your exit and head back into the main dining hall, where everybody was already seated and clapping. Apparently, the President had made his big opening speech, which you had completely missed. However, if you were fast enough, you'd beat him to the table.

You and Anna both scuttle through the aisles before taking your seats at the President's table. You're sitting directly to his left side, in between him and Portland, who gives you a disapproving headshake for being late. On the President's right, there's the Captain and North Carolina.

Finally, there were the other foreign dignitaries, the big ones being the Japanese Prime Minister, and the Chinese and Russian Ambassadors. Of course, the ambassadors were giving you shipgirls slightly jealous looks, apparently having been snubbed from sitting closer to the President.

"Damn speeches! No wonder everybody just hires somebody else to write 'em!" The President chuckles as he takes his seat, adjusting his tie in the process. "Ah, Hoel, you made it! Thought you went to play hooky or something!"

"And miss this? Never!" You laugh.

And that's when the first course starts to be brought out.

"So, Pres, how are things going back on the homefront?" You ask. "Feels like forever since we've been back there!"

"Ah well, things are going pretty great!" The President grins. "The shore defenses are holding, and the Atlantic is still clear. And with the war starting to swing in our favor, refugees are starting to return to the coastal cities and the economy is starting to pick back up!"

"Sounds great!" Anna chirps.

"Also," The President leans in conspiratorially. "Quite a number of you have, well, become celebrities."

"Really?!" Your eyes flash. "Are we gonna get money out of it?"

"That's kind of the problem, honestly!" The President laughs. "By law, and one of my executive orders, all shipgirls are considered human beings for the purposes of human rights and the Constitution. But... since you're also navy ships, the rights to your likenesses also belong to the US Navy..."

"That complicated, huh?" You frown.

"Yeah, well, I'll leave that to the Supreme Court to figure out!" The President shrugs. "Lord knows, we've got bigger things to worry about and it's not like we're going to be able to stop all that 'independent' work on the internet!"

"Independent work?" You raise an eyebrow suspiciously. "Is that what I think it is-"

"Yep. Porn." The President nods. "Somebody out there's making a serious killing off of it."

You immediately shoot a poisonous glare at Portland, who does her best not to make any contact with you. Indy looks on curiously.

"I have to say though, there's this one artist group that consistently turns out quality work. Looks like this "Love x Radar" thing he's working on is real popular!"

You shoot a glare at Portland again, who again tries not to look directly at you.

"S-so how did this all come to your attention...?" Portland asks awkwardly.

"Hah, we got an entire wing of the NSA and CIA dedicated to trawling the internet for potential threats to the US of A!" The President laughs and points at the Ambassadors. "Though if you ask me, I'm pretty sure 99% of that is coming from those assholes' countries."

The Chinese and Russian Ambassadors were clearly not amused by the President's dig at them.

"Yeah, well, I'm not like a lot of other people, which is how I got this job!" The President laughs. "Besides, I figured you be cool enough to roll with it."

"Is that also why you banished all your aides and PR personnel to the other table?" The Captain asks coolly.

"You ARE as sharp as they say!" The President nods.

The Prime Minister and Ambassadors just shake their heads. Apparently they were used to his antics at this point.

And an evil idea floats its way through your head.

"Hey, Mr. Pres, if you're really interested in meeting the artist... well... I can hook you up..."

That's when Portland goes completely white.

"Hahahaha, DON'T BE SILLY, HOEL!" Portland huffs out a fake laugh as she loops her arm around your throat. "THERE'S NO POSSIBLE WAY YOU COULD KNOW THAT!"

"Ha! It's always a riot with shipgirls around!" The President smiles before something else catches his eye. "Excellent! The main course!"

And that's when the waiters come by with plates carrying the biggest motherfucking hamburger you had ever seen. It had to be as tall as a fucking skyscraper!

"Whoa, what is this?" You gasp in awe at its length and girth.

"The 7th Fleet Burger, of course!" The President rubs his hand together. "Considering the big win the Navy just handed us, this seemed to be the appropriate dish to serve, right?"

"Where did you even get all the beef to supply that?" The Japanese Prime Minister gasps. "It's still a heavily rationed item here!"

"Well, I know a girl with a particular set of skills for getting what needed pronto." The President winks. You get the feeling you might know who he was talking about. "Enough talking, let's dig in!"

That burger is barely a snack to a shipgirl, I bet even a DDG like Hoel (and she is a DDG now) could pack away a half dozen easy.
>>
>>1228515
I see what POTUS is playing at here, he's showing off a bit by implying that only the US can afford to upgrade and maintain shipgirls in large numbers and China and Russia can't handle it; the former having had its navy's shit kicked in by the Abyssals and the latter never having had any shipgirls report for duty.

Just a scant few months ago, you may not have been able to finish this burger. However, you were no longer just a simple WWII destroyer. Not anymore. A diesel electric engine thrummed in your heart, and your new high tech systems burned calories like no tomorrow. You wolf down the entire 7th Fleet burger in no time flat.

North Carolina, being a battleship, has no problem finishing off the burger, either. Portland seems to be able to hold her own as well, though she looked a bit queasy. Indy didn't really finish, but mainly because she spent most of her time meticulously taking the burger apart as if to examine each and every individual component.

Anna, surprisingly enough, also manages to finish her burger, though with some difficulty due to her small size. You guess that like you, running all those high power radars and comm systems burned up a lot of energy.

Out of the gathered humans, only the President manages to finish. The Captain wisely gives up halfway through and lets North Carolina have the rest, while the other dignitaries just give up.

And in that space of time between the main course and dessert it when the President finally decides to press some important issues.

"So, with the Pacific largely secured, I take it that we can expect more participation from your countries?" The President asks the Chinese and Russian Ambassadors.

"We will consider it if the United States will honor the naval boundaries as they existed before this war started." The Chinese Ambassador says.

"You mean you want your 'islands' back." The President glowers. "Even though your navy was the first to crumble, you still think you have the clout to act like the boss of the Pacific?"

"Our island bases represent important staging points for our forces." The Chinese Ambassador responds. "With our navy in its current... depleted state, it would be the only way we could reliably defend our coastline."

"I thought that's what your 'Great Seawall' was for." The President mused.

"As a purely defensive strategy, yes." The Chinese Ambassador retorts. "One that we would gladly stay with if we see no benefit supporting any other plan."

So this was politics, huh?

You decide to stay quiet for now, just to see where this conversation was going to go.

"Is that so? Well that's a damn shame." The President shrugs. "Your country has so much resources and supplies, and you're spending it all building some bigass wall. Opening up supply shipments again would be a huge diplomatic boon, wouldn't it?"

"As we said before, supplying the needs of all of Asia simply is not feasible." The Chinese Ambassador narrows his eyes. "We would need to send out many cargo ships that would need to be protected and escorted. If we have no island bases, then perhaps if we were given some new ships or shipgirls-"

"Haha, that ain't happening.." The President chuckles. "We all know what happens when you get something new and fancy."

"No, I don't know what happens." The Chinese Ambassador frowns darkly. "I don't like what you're implying."

"Well, suit yourself then. If you guys want to hide behind a wall that you don't even know is going to work or not, be my guest." The President shrugs.

"Our calculations are sound. Nothing can get through our Seawall." The Chinese Ambassador huffs.

"Tell that to the Mongols."

"I believe that I shall take my leave now." The Chinese Ambassador calmly stands up. "The hour is late and there are still many other matters I must attend to."

"You do that." The President shrugs as the Chinese Ambassador walks out.

"Fuckin' TOLD." You giggle as the Chinese Ambassador essentially storms off in a huff. "Ya really rustled him!"

"Always asking for the same shit and expecting a different result." The President rolls his eyes.

"That still seemed a bit harsh..." Portland frowns.

"Ha, that went pretty damn well!" The President winks. "The last Ambassdor tried to sock me once!"

That... didn't seem to reassure Portland at all.

"So, what say you?" The President turns to the Russian ambassador. "Can we expect the Russian Bear to come out of hibernation?"

"We are perfectly willing to assist the Allied forces in beating back the Abyssal threat." The Russian Ambassador nods. "However, since our Pacific Fleet has not fared well and since no Russian shipgirls have appeared for us, our options are... limited. Unless we were to receive monetary and material assistance."

"Well, that sounds reasonable enough." The the President nods, clearly still on his guard.

"You know, I heard from a friend of mine that there were Russian shipgirls around...?" You raise the question as innocently as you could.

"Then your friend was misinformed." The Russian Ambassador shakes his head. "There has been no recorded instance of a Russian shipgirl appearing. Hence, Russia has had to solely rely on conventional forces to repel the Abyssal threat."

"Because I'm sure the people appreciate you dropping tactical nukes on your own shorelines." The President muses. "Not to mention those heavily fortified coastal bases you built that don't actually have ships or subs based in them."

"The Russian people are no stranger to sacrifice in desperate times." The Russian Ambassador responds. "And we do not appreciate having our bases spied upon by our 'comrades.'"

"It's nothing our satellites haven't poked at already." The President shrugs. "And we've got to make sure the Abyssals aren't making landfall on your country."

"Well, if that is the case, I have heard from some 'sources' that your Navy has developed a way to produce artificial shipgirls." The Russian Ambassador gives a slight grin. "Such a technology, it would solve Russia and China's lack of shipgirls to meet the Abyssal threat..."

"I have no idea what you're talking about." The President tries to shrug it off as casually as he can.

"A pity, then." The Russian Abassador sips at his wine.

"Hey, Paz, ya hear me?" You ask.

"Yep yep!" Paz replies. "Lil Sis Sam is really cool! I didn't know she was the one that got all these hamburgers made!"

"Uh huh, she's pretty cool like that." You nod. "Hey, um, you haven't noticed anything strange or out of place around you?"

"Nope!" Paz says happily. "I'm with Sam and the other carriers. I think they're all on their fourth serving now!"

Well, that was good to know. Paz was sitting with not just Sam, but a lot of the most dependable shipgirls in the fleet.

As long as they don't get a pennant number or ship name, it should be safe. Best to avoid them anyway.

Also I bet that the Chinese and the Russians ARE already trying to make artificial shipgirls with smuggled Abyssal parts, high chances that their attempts will go severely wrong (as in their research labs or naval yards getting wrecked).

"Ah, just watch out for Russian and Chinese." You warn her. "They're uh, being really naughty right now."

"Okay!" Paz chimes. "But what if they wanna talk to me?"

"Then just let Sam do all the talking." You instruct. "And uh, on that note, stick close with Sam and the others. Don't leave their sight! Got it?"

"Okaaaay!"

Now slightly relieved, you return your attention to the events at the table. However, you leave your datalink on and open just in case.

At this point, dessert was being served. As far as you could tell, it was a very fancy chocolate cake with ice cream on the side. Something you totally didn't mind at all. Though you keep a wary eye on the Russian Ambassador. The rest of dessert continues uneventfully, and soon the crowd begins to disperse.

"I will relay what we have talked about to my superiors." The Russian Ambassador bows politely before leaving.

The President and Japanese Prime Minister share a few words and a handshake before he turns to you.

"Um, sure." You nod.

"I'm going too!" Anna says as she gets up.

"I'm real sorry, little lady, but this has got to be private talk between me and Hoel." The President weeks. "I hope you understand."

"O-okay..." Anna nods a bit dejectedly. Fortunately, Portland is quick to swoop in and guide her away.

"All right then, let's get going!" The President says as he marches off.

You soon find yourself sitting in the President's personal armored limo, with the President, Captain, and North Carolina.

"So what is this about?" North Carolina asks.

"I have a feeling it's not about the food." The Captain sighs.

"Not exactly." The President leans forward from his seat. "So, I know you all here are in the know about the Pacifica Program, right?"

"You mean Vahlen's pet project?" You growl.

"That's the one." The President nods. "The thing is, we've never made that project public, or official, for obvious reasons. I know that we're letting her run around the base, but I don't have to remind you not to talk too openly about where she came from, all right? As you saw in the meeting, China and Russia were interested in rumors about the project, and they aren't the only ones. We have to keep it under wraps, especially since the docs haven't really found a way to... 'streamline' the process yet, according to their words.

"Don't have to tell me twice." You roll your eyes.

"Anyways, I noticed you pressing the Russians about whether they had any shipgirls or not." The President narrows his eyes. "Something on your mind about that?"

"Um, well, it just seemed kinda sketchy how they were really insistent they didn't have any." You shrug.

"Yeah, they weren't exactly subtle about that." The President nods in agreement.

"So, TOTALLY HYPOTHETICALLY, what if the Russians DID have shipgirls, but just didn't say anything about it? Like what happened with Argentina?" You ask.

"It's certainly in the Russian playbook to play their cards very close to the chest." The President nods.

"And, TOTALLY HYPOTHETICALLY, what if those same shipgirls went AWOL and the Russians are too embarrassed to admit it?" You continue.

"Ha, the funny thing is, my boys in the CIA and NRO are beginning to think the exact same thing." The President nods and turns the Captain. "What do you and the Admiral think?"

"The satellite images and witness testimonies only provide circumstantial evidence at best." The Captain narrows his eyes. "But put together, there's a strong case."

"I figured." The President nods and turns back to you. "Don't worry, we'll be dealing with that little issue soon, especially now that we've got our southern flank secured."

And with that, the limo finally pulls up to Yokosuka Base. The vehicle comes to a stop in front of the shipgirl barracks.

"Watch out, all of you. We're going into a new stage on this war, and Abyssals aren't going to be the only enemies we'll be facing." The President warns before taking his leave.

The Republic of China had some gunships, protected cruisers and light cruisers in the 1930s. But they were all either sunk or captured by the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War. If the requirement is being active in WWII, then Ning Hai, Ping Hai and Yat Sen should be summonable, even if they weren't active under those names at the time.
