You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

The household - plus Nimue, who's made herself visible for once - sits around the kitchen table as Myrddin lays out the results of his investigation. There's nothing too incriminating, of course, but there are enough letters, account ledgers, and assorted notes to form a picture of some of your uncle's contacts.

It's not enough to kill him, but it is enough to cripple, if you're willing to put enough effort into it.

Unfortunately, there are other problems that require your attention.

"The duchies of Scathn and Ulainn are being more belligerent than usual," Reagan says. "With Danargh and Nogren busy with things in Machain, they don't have to worry about attacks from the south at the moment. They're demanding concessions from my father, and they're unwilling to compromise."

"No doubt they're trying to secure their position before the prince can make a formal visit to Olstren," Esyllt says. "They want to negotiate from a position of strength."

"It'd be extremely difficult for us to march an army that far," Olstren says. "Degfford can defend itself, but…" She shakes her head. "Even if we had a standing army, we wouldn't be able to do it."

"Can we afford to worry about Olstren at the moment?" Eleri flips through the pages of Myrddin's report. "It might be better to focus on your uncle instead, your highness. If you become the King of Olstren, he'll have to launch some kind of attack to protect his own position."

"There's still work to do in Degfford," Delyth says. "I know Olstren is your responsibility, your highness, but it might be better to stay here and continue to build up your power."

"I agree," Seren says. "The children are do in about a month, and winter will follow not too long after that. We can continue to expand the city so you're ready to act in the spring."

You steeple your hands and bow your head, deep in thought.

Olstren, your uncle, or Degfford. There are problems waiting for you everyone, but you can only spend winter in one place. If you go to Olstren with Reagan and your child, you might be able to use the time to consolidate your power and bring the dukes to heel. If you return to the capital to visit your parents, you'll be able to end your uncle's plans, and perhaps your uncle himself as well. Finally, you can just stay in Degfford and wait for your enemies to make the first move. Naturally, if you stay, you'll be able to spend time with your entire household instead of deciding who to bring.

"Reagan, what else do you know about the situation in Olstren?"

"Scathn and Ulainn don't want a war, but they'll go through with it if they think it'll be worth the cost," Reagan says. "I'm quite certain, they'll lose, but it won't be an easy war."

"Scathn and Ulainn…" You scrunch up your forehead, trying to remember what you know about them. They're far to the north, and not particularly wealthy if you remember correctly. "They want more arable land, I assume?"

"The duchies have good game for hunting, but they rely heavily on potato crops," Reagan says. "There aren't many ports, and the roads are often treacherous, so importing food is difficult for them, and the poorer peasants can't afford preserves."

They have a similar problem to Danargh then, although they seem to suffer far worse. It might be difficult to placate them if you can't deliver food to them reliably.

"What would you suggest?"

"We can go to central Olstren once our child is born," Reagan says. "That will give us the opportunity and time to negotiate an agreement. If we wait too long, diplomacy will no longer be an option."

And if merchants have difficulty navigating the roads, you doubt an army will fare better.

"Myrddin, tell me about my uncle's plans."

"As far as I can tell, most of it is just low-level crime." Myrddin leafs through some of the pages before him. "Smuggling, bribes, nepotism, petty blackmail, that sort of thing. However…"

You raise an eyebrow, prompting him to continue.

"Some of the transactions correspond with black market weapon sales I'm aware of," Myrddin admits. "I can't know for certain what they're for, but we should assume the worst for the sake of caution."

"Prince Aled has never done anything as bold as open rebellion," Olwen says. "We can't fall into paranoia either."

"He did try to assassinate his highness recently," Eleri says. "With Prince Meirion dead or gone to rule Olstren, he would be able to move more freely."

"The Crown Prince's wife is a commoner," Reagan adds. "She has no house with which to counterbalance your uncle."

"Myrddin, what about Nesta's suitors?" You ask.

"I know she's spent some time in Rosea recently," Myrddin says, "but I don't know if anything came of it. It's a possibility we can explore further if you want to deal with your uncle."

You close your eyes and think. Your uncle isn't likely to start a rebellion immediately, so you still have time to take care of things "quietly." Much like Olstren, it would require your personal intervention.

>"What about Degfford?"
>"I've decided. I'm going to the capital to deal with my uncle."

"What about Degfford?"

"Now that the enchantment workshop is ready, we can work on a theatre, find some clerks, or continue developing our enchantment and alchemy facilities," Myrddin says. "If you want to eventually raise a full standing army, enchantment and alchemy in particular will require attention."

"Once we have a theatre, we should be able to attract enough scholars to build a full university," Eleri says. "We could then train ministers, or better spies for Myrddin's little club."

"A worthy endeavour," Myrddin says, "and not entirely impossible with the time we have to work with. However, accelerating the city's development would require your full attention, your highness."

Degfford is only a small city, but if you can expand it, it would become quite useful if a civil war breaks out, either in Olstren or Gwyrddarfordir.

So there are your options: Degfford, Olstren or the capital city of Aurwain. All three require your personal attention if you want to accomplish anything meaningful.

>"I'll remain in Degfford and continue working on the city."
>"I need to deal with my uncle. I'll go to Aurwain."

"I need to deal with my uncle," you say. "I'll go to Aurwain for the winter. Mother will want to see the children anyway."

"Very well," Reagan says. "I'll have to trust you to do something about Olstren if the situation deteriorates."

"Don't worry," you say. "Once my uncle is no longer a problem, I won't have to worry about surprise attacks."

"With that out of the way," Myrddin says, "we should talk about the Degfford's next construction project now that the enchantment workshop is finished."

Right, if you're going to go to Aurwain for the winter, you should make the best use of your time while you're still in Degfford.

You recall the next projects in the list: clerks, a theatre, an enchantment storehouse, and a alchemy storehouse.

"Let's find clerks next," you decide. "It'd be nice to have someone manage the city in my absence."

"I can recommend some merchants for the job," Esyllt says. "Either the very young or the very old. They'll know how to work ledgers and they'll be mostly reliable so long as they're well-paid."

"They're more likely to sell information to their friends and line their pockets," Myrddin objects.

"Probably." Esyllt shrugs. "That's what your secret police is for, isn't it?"

"A fair point," Myrddin concedes. "However, I would prefer to train our own clerks. If we do hire outside help, it should be experienced civil servants from the capital. Perhaps we can give them supervisory position over the junior clerks?"

>[Dilettante/1d12] "The merchants will be good enough."

"Myrddin, I'll leave the preparations for the trip to you," you say. The "preparations" here have less to do with packing and finding guards than contacting spies, putting assassins in place, checking up on safehouses and so forth. You'll need to do this personally, but you'll still need help.

"Everything will be in place by the time we get there," Myrddin says. "You can decide who to bring once we leave." He then turns to his wife. "Come on, Nimue. I need you to run a few messages for me."

Nimue nods and hops off her chair. Halfway to the door, she stops and turns to you.

"The rope worked quite well, your highness."

She then turns around and exits. Myrddin freezes and makes some kind of odd choking sound. Nimue comes back to pull him along.

"I'd love to see that," Olwen says, "but I expect I wouldn't enjoy the memory very much."

"I would like to know if Myrddin enjoys it as much as you do." You stand up and stretch your arms to work out the kinks. "Still, I'm glad we'll be returning to Aurwain. It's been a while since I've seen my family."

"Speaking of family." Olwen gets into your face and glares. "You do realize that if there is a war in Olstren that needs to be dealt with, I can't afford to get pregnant like, right?"

"Feeling jealous?"

"A little bit, yes," Olwen admits.

"Don't be," Esyllt says. "It's quite inconvenient, and I doubt it's half as rewarding as people say it is."

>"The world won't end if you sit one war out, Olwen."

"Delyth, do you want to keep waiting as well?"

Delyth's cheeks turn bright red and she averts your gaze. "I was already prepare to carry your highness' child," she says in a quiet voice.

You pointedly ignore Olwen, who's now glaring at you like she desperately wants to stab you in the face - probably because she does - and hug Delyth to give her a kiss.

"In that case, let's get started."

"I'm afraid I'll have to pass," Esyllt says. "I have to count my money."

Seren joins her as well, looking somewhat disappointed.

"I must admit," Eleri says, "I'm a bit curious to see what Olwen is going to do about this."

"As am I," Reagan says.

Olwen's eye twitches a little.

You pick Delyth up and carry her over to the bedroom while everyone else follows.

Olwen, as usual, gets stripped naked and tied to a chair. From her position, she has a perfect view of you having sex with Delyth.

Again.

And again.

And again.

In fact, she glares at you throughout the whole thing, and it's only the gag that prevents her from screaming obscenities. Eleri eventually decides to take pity on her and give her what she wants, while Reagan simply watches while snickering.

Afterwards, you untie Olwen, and she and Eleri drag themselves onto the bed, next to a panting Delyth. Reagan looks at the naked women and smiles.

"It is quite something to see," Reagan says. "I look forward to partaking again in a few months." She looks through one of the cupboards and takes out a bottle of pills. "We do have some contraceptives left, if you're still up for it. Olwen certainly is."

Olwen grumbles something incoherent. Probably some vague insult or threat aimed at you.

You hold out your hand and Reagan tosses the bottle over. You take one of the pills and gently lift Olwen to put her somewhere… out of the way. She's still dazed, and you wonder just how much time she's spent with Eleri. For her part, Eleri wiggles out of the way and pulls the sheets up over herself and Delyth.

Olwen regains her focus when you kiss her. She immediately wraps her arms and legs around you, and her nails dig into your back.

Olwen has her three turns as well, and you bring her over to the bath. She cuddles to you, resting her head against your chance.

"It's nice to feel wanted," she says. "The more you want to dominate me, the better it feels."

"I know the feeling," you say. "Knowing that the entire kingdom needs me is exhilarating at times."

"I'm not talking about assassinations."

"Right, no assassinations."

You put your arm around Olwen's shoulder and close your eyes. You feel the water ripple, and Reagan quietly slips into the bath as well, followed by Eleri and Delyth. You crack one eye open and look for that bottle again.

Now, it's just Prince Aled and Olstren left to deal with, so as I've mentioned before, I don't expect the quest to last much longer. I'm running a poll on twitter here: https://twitter.com/BeleagueredQM/status/835686761141534720 for my next quest, so if you want to vote or you just want to see the pitches, go ahead and check that out.

Metal Gear Solid always had a solid (heh) backing, but Modern Shinobi only took the lead after I advertised on /qtg/ and my regulars seemed to prefer Legatus Goetia or Tutelary God. What I might do is run Metal Gear on /qst/ and then run Modern Shinobi on Anonkun for a bit since I'd like to try it out. Modern Shinobi is closer to a series of one-shots, so I can just run it whenever I feel like it and it won't affect things much. I can just do a few sessions and then pick up Legatus Goetia or Tutelary God.

In any case, I'll post updates here and on twitter @BeleagueredQM. Beleaguered Prince Quest will return on March 10th at 7PM EST. Until then, goodnight and thanks for playing.
