Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

The snow crackles and crunches beneath your feet as you make the trek up the hill to the academy, a handful of bags of shopping being carried along with you.

“So, First Mate Ryoji! What did you think?” Nanami smiles as she trails up behind you. You, Saki, Ken and Nariko were invited to sit-in for a rehearsal of her upcoming play with a few of the villagers. Lucky thing too, you'll be unable to make the actual performance since you and Saki will be taking the first train to your parent's home in order to spend New Year's with them. Saki's been buzzing with excitement all week because of it.

“Well...” you mutter. “You were definitely the best actor in the whole thing. The villagers...”

“I guess they're still a little shaky,” Nanami admits. “But fear not! It's still another... two days until the real performance!”

“I don't think that's soon enough,” you reply.

“Never doubt the power of a good crew!” Nanami replies. “They'll pull through in no time!”

“You really were excellent,” Saki smiles at Nanami.

Nariko nods. “Yeah, the other folk's suckiness only made you look even better, too!”

The five of you make your way past the school gates and up to the main building of the school. Just in time for the end of term assembly. Saki would have have been crushed if she could miss something so... thrilling? You'll never have any idea why Saki is so excited over something so boring... but you suppose it's all part of what makes Saki... well, Saki.

“Oh, I can't wait!” Saki shakes with anticipation. “Ryoji, I really hope Agent White or Principal Wei give out good attendance awards this time!”

“The most prestigious award of all,” you roll your eyes. “Is Wei going to give me a lump of coal for my attendance?”

“Well, your attendance towards the beginning of the term can be excused,” Saki points out. “You were trapped in the Darkworld, after all.”

Oh yeah, that was a fun summer.

You're a monster.

As the two of you wait outside the hall, Saki turns her head to you. “It was real nice of you to chip in on the party decorations, Ryoji. Did you pick up any extra gifts while you were at it?”

>Actually, yeah. I got something for everyone in Class.
>Well, I could only really afford gifts for my closest friends...
>Nah. I got you a gift, but I wasn't going to splash out any more than that.

>Actually, yeah. I got something for everyone in Class.

"Wow, I didn't expect that!" Saki replies, before clearing her throat. "Oh no, that sounded rude..."

"Nah, I didn't expect it either," you reply. "But... well, you guys have been a real family to me this last year. The only friends I've known... so I thought I should get something, for everyone, no matter how small. God, that's lame..."

"No, it's sweet!" Saki assures you. "Hmm, maybe this school has moulded you into a fine responsible young man after all!"

"Don't push it," you reply.

As the rest of the school arrives, you all pool into the assembly hall. At the front of the hall on stage stands Agent White at a podium, with Principal Wei and the rest of the staff sitting behind him.

"I'll keep this short and sweet," White explains. "I think the majority of the talking here should be done by the Principal and teachers. I would just like to wish you students a fruitful and productive winter break. I'm sure you're all eager to attend the Christmas party later tonight as well. Well... all I ask of you all is that you don't lose sight of why we're here. The purpose of this school. These are dark times for the academy, and while we are free to party and enjoy ourselves this holiday season, we also have a job to do. So please, remain prepared."

Agent White steps down from the podium, as Yamano nervously steps up, carrying a stack of papers. As she prepares them, they immediately slip from her hands and fall to the floor. She panics and scrambles to collect them, before eventually giving up. "Uhh... umm..." she mumbles. "I... I like working here. I like the students... a-and the staff! So... well done! Merry Christmas! P-principal Wei?"

Wei makes his way up to the podium next. "Merry Christmas," is all he says, before sitting back down.

"Well... that was a brief assembly," Kosuke remarks. "Not that I'm complaining."

"Tell me about it," you reply. "I thought he'd drone on and on."

"I know, this is awful!" Saki complains. "Uh, I mean... good?"

"You don't have to pretend you're not a dork," Kosuke replies.

Saki gets flustered as you tease her with a simple pat on the head. "I-I'm not! I... I just wanted-"

As the assembly comes to a close, you're approached by none other than Maro. He hands you a small box with the usual expressionless stare on his face. "Here, Ryoji."

"A gift?" you ask. "Huh... didn't think you'd get me something."

"It's only partly for you," Maro replies. As he does, you realise exactly who it's for.

You pull out a silver bracelet from the box with a name engraved into it.

"Lilo designed these," Maro explains. "Something for all of Class 3 to have, especially since this will be our last Christmas together... I just thought that you... and her should have this."

The name Nina is engraved carefully into the bracelet with much love and care.

"Maro... Lilo..." Nina mutters. "I was in a different state when they knew me. Emotionless and distant, but... I miss them. I miss them so much..."

"Oh hey, don't cry..."

>She's very thankful for the gift, Maro.

>She's very thankful for the gift, Maro.

>So, what do you plan on doing when you graduate?

"A lot of questions at once," Maro comments. "Well... I'm glad that Nina appreciates the gift."

"I do, Maro... I really do..."

"And no... I won't be heading home. None of Class 3 will be," he explains. "We have decided as a group to remain here and keep an eye out for Yami or Tsuki so that you younger students can enjoy the holiday in peace."

"Pretty noble of you," you reply.

"Yes... though Lilo's disappointed that I won't be meeting her family," he adds. "As for graduation... I never put much thought into it. I've been under the impression that I would remain here, continue to help out those in need as much as I can."

"You never take a break, do you?" you smirk.

Maro shakes his head. "I don't believe in breaks, Ryoji. Have a nice Christmas."

"You too," you reply.

"Ryoji!" Akemi's voice yells out as you are pounced on by the little monkey. She's even more excitable than usual... and that's saying something. "Are you ready?" she asks. "Tonight's the night! The night that Akemi Claus comes to town!"

"Yeah, it's pretty exciting to... wait, what were those words you just said?" you ask.

"Akemi Claus!" she replies. "She's going to come and visit all the good boys and girls and leave them presents!"

"Oh, this is like Halloween, right?" you reply. "With the Great Pumpkemi, and you in s costume?"

"No, silly!" Akemi replies. "Costumes are for Halloween!"

"No, I meant that the Great Pumpkemi was you in a costume, and Akemi Claus... ah, forget it. Just, don't be going down any chimneys."

Akemi gives a cheery salute. "Of course not, Ryoji! I'll leave the chimneys to Akemi Claus!"

Akemi bounces off as you're left to scratch your head. There's no getting through to Akemi, is there? Well, you're not going to deny her those strange little fantasies.

"Did I hear that right?" Nanami gasps. "Is Akemi going to be pulling her Akemi Claus act this year again?"

"She's done it before, huh?" you remark, unsurprised.

"That cute little scurvy dog!" Nanami exclaims. "I was going to introduce a new Christmas-themed costume this year! Now I'm going to look like a copy-cat!"

>Well, you snooze you lose, Nanami.

>Why don't you just try being yourself this Christmas?

"Myself?" Nanami replies. "But where's the holiday spirit in that?"

"Well, Christmas is supposed to be a time for couples," you reply. "So don't stress about having to entertain people today. Just focus on yourself, okay?"

Nanami nods. "Hmm... okay! I guess I can always count on the advice of my first mate!"

As you move forward, Saki in turn goes and grabs your arm. "Are you ready for the Christmas party?" she asks. "It's in the assembly hall, exactly where we had the end of term dance last year!"

"The same one I got kidnapped at?" you reply. "Oh joy."

"Well, it was also where we had our first dance..." Saki smiles. "Well, technically we danced in the hallway just outside of the assembly hall, but... well, you know! Let's look on the bright side!"

"That was a pretty good night, right up until the kidnapping thing."

Saki nods. "Right! Now, let's go!"

Let's go? "Saki... the party won't start for another hour."

"Yeah, but it's our duty to help decorate!" Saki replies.

You let out a sigh. "Fine..."

The two of you make your way back into the assembly hall and begin to pin up the decorations. Some tinsel, a nice fake tree, and in one of your more subtle pranks, an unreasonable amount of mistletoe. So much mistletoe. Mistletoe everywhere.

"Ryoji, don't you think that's enough of the mistletoe?" Saki asks as you hang the last piece up. "We don't want to encourage excessive amounts of lewd beha-"

"Ah, you know the rules, Saki!" you smirk as you point to the mistletoe above you that she just stood under.

"Oh, why did you have to call it a rule..." Saki whines, before giving you a quick kiss.

Tekina approaches the two of you with a proud smile on her face. "Oh, the adorableness of young love! Why, I recall only a few months ago in this hall that I helped guide you two towards each-other during the school dance!"

"That's why you stuffed me into that dress?" Saki gasps.

Tekina snaps her fingers. "Of course! It was an experiment in chemistry, if you will! And it payed off wonderfully!"

>Huh, I still haven't thanked you for that. Thanks, Tekina.

>Huh, I still haven't thanked you for that. Thanks, Tekina.

"Aw, thank you very much!" Tekina grins. "I-wait, who told you about that! Y-you have to keep quiet about things like that!"

"Huh?" you ask. "You yeah... staff can't date. Well, it doesn't seem to be stopping any of you."

"I'm happy for you and Takeshi-sensei," Saki bows. "He's a lovely man, and it was pretty clear from the beginning that he liked you."

"It was?" Tekina asks. "I never noticed!"

"H-how didn't you...?" Saki mutters, horribly confused.

From the corner of your eye, you spot the man himself. Takeshi the janitor, sneaking up behind Tekina, likely in some attempt at a spontaneous romantic gesture. Instead, he slips on a waxed piece of the floor that he himself waxed and falls flat on his face. Tekina turns around and gasps before rushing to his aid.

"Oh Takeshi, are you okay? Your nose is bleeding!"

"I'll be fine," Takeshi nervously chuckles as Tekina hands him some tissues. "I-I was just kinda trying to be adorable..."

"Oh, you're always adorable!" Tekina replies, before giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Your attention is then caught by another pair of staff, namely Akihito helping Miss Hirashi the gym teacher set-up som decorations by lifting her up by the waist.

"Well, aren't you strong?" she giggles as he lowers her back down again. "Thanks for the help!"

"It's really nothing..." Akihito mumbles humbly.

Hirashi laughs. "Are you joking? Any girl would kill to have a man with arms like yours!"

"Well... thank you, but uh... ah, Ryoji!" he exclaims as her nervously moves away from Hirashi. "I wanted to wish you and Saki a merry Christmas... with these."

He hands the two of you a pair of gifts with a smile. "For Saki, I got you a new binder to hold all of your schedules in."

Saki's face lights up. "Thank you, sensei! My last one was getting very full!"

"And for you, Ryoji..." he mutters, as you open it up, and have a small chuckle at the contents.

"Is this what I think it is?" you ask.

"Yes," he replies. "The first packet of cigarettes I ever confiscated from you."

"Thanks, teach."

"Yeah..." Akihito smiles. "I have to say, I am so proud of what the two of you have accomplished throughout the year. In your own ways, you're both extraordinary students."

"Never thought I'd hear that," you remark. "Least of all from you."

Akihito nods. "Well... I suppose I do have to ask something... do you miss me? As a teacher?"

>To be honest... yeah.

>Teach, if you were still in charge of class, we wouldn't be friends like this.

"Well, would you look at that?" Akihito smirks. "Did the master delinquent just call me, his no-nonsense teacher a friend?"

"I think he did!" Saki smiles.

You shake your head. "Hey, don't read too much into it. I was just being nice."

Akihito chuckles. "Don't worry, Ryoji. I'd consider you a friend too."

"Hey teach, don't make this even more embarrassing!"

"I'm sorry Ryoji, but it's the truth. You and I are friends."

Akihito places a hand on your shoulder and smiles, as Saki gasps with joy. "This is perfect! Oh, I wish I had a camera!"

Akihito moves on, as you're treated to the first guest of the Dark Gate Christmas party. It's Kosuke and Rini... and what the hell is Rini wearing?

"What the hell are you wearing?" you ask.

"What? You got a problem with my outfit?" Rini scowls. "I'll have you know that our moneybags friend made this!"

"Kosuke, you can sew?" you remark.

"Not Kosuke!" Rini snaps.

"Hoshi?" you ask.

"No!"

"... Saki, you didn't make it, did you?"

"Chihiro!" Rini yells. "But now that you mention it... how many rich people are in our class?! Damn, you guys should spread some of that wealth!"

"Okay, it makes sense that Chihiro would make something like that," you reply. "But why are you of all people wearing it?"

Rini smirks devilishly. "Isn't it obvious? If I put on this clown suit, it'll encourage more of the girls to put on theirs! And these outfits are right for groping! Isn't that right, Sak?"

Saki cowers behind you as her eyes widen in fear. "Ryojiiiiii! I can't wear something like that!"

"My wife has become one hell of a schemer lately," Kosuke smirks. "If her mind wasn't filled with dirty thoughts, she could be a tactician."

Kosuke and Rini take a seat, with Rini sitting on her husbands lap, as the four of you await the other arrivals. "Noticing a lot of mistletoe," Kosuke mentions. "Your doing?"

"You bet," you reply.

"Nice."

Just then, a new entrant arrives to the party, one much less eager to see your personal decorations. "Why are these here?" a somewhat nervous Reiji remarks. "I can't say I approve of them, Ryoji. Do you mind taking them down?"

"And here comes the spoilsport," Kosuke mutters.

Reiji adjusts his glasses. "I'm not trying to spoil anyone's fun," he explains. "It's just... I'm worried that this little decoration of yours could lead to some unfortunate consequences..."

>Not a chance, Reiji. Don't be so uptight.

Reiji clears his throat and adjusts his glasses. "I have no earthly idea what you mean."

"Sure you don't," you reply. "You're not worried about that at all, are you?"

"M-my relationship with Hoshi Sanada is perfectly professional," Reiji stammers out. "I-I just think that the abundance of mistletoe is inappropriate for a school gathering-"

"Don't be ashamed to admit it!" the ever-rowdy Rini chuckles as she rises up and throws an arm over Reiji's shoulder. "I'd like to get my hands on her myself, if she weren't so nervous all the time."

"Well, that's the difference between myself and a delinquent like you," Reiji remarks.

"What, that you'd grope her regardless?" Rini smirks.

"N-no, that's not what I meant!" Reiji panics. "Oh, never mind!"

Reiji storms off, as you're soon approached by Akio, with Seishiro following close behind. "Hey, it's my man Ryoji!" he smiles. "Ah, tonight's gonna be a good one!"

"What's got you in such a chipper mood?" you ask.

"Well, tonight I'm going to give Hikaru the best Christmas she's ever had!" he explains. "I'm going to d it, Ryoji! I'm going to prove my love to her once and for all! I've even got Shinji backing me up, and tomorrow we're all going to have a picnic together!"

"I guess our chat at the hot springs really got through to you," you remark.

"You bet it did!" Akio replies. "Now, I need to get her gifts ready."

As Akio walks off, Seishiro stares at him. He lets out a sigh, before turning to you. "Bro, what am I going to do?"

"What do you mean?" you ask.

"Well... I'm in love with Aki. You said so yourself... but then I've got cutieb-Satomi... and I gotta break the news to her."

"You dumping my roommate?" Rini scowls. "Great, now she's gonna be whining for months, and I'll have to avoid that room like the plague!"

"When was the last time you even stayed in that room?" Kosuke asks.

"Uhh... I think it was in August," Rini replies.

>Are you sure you want to dump her? You seemed sort of happy.

Seishiro pauses for a moment. "Well... I mean, I guess I was. I mean, I didn't like being seen with her in public, but... when I was with her, I was happy. Very happy... but wait, I'm in love with Akio, so why would I be happy with her? It... that doesn't make sense! What are you trying to pull on me, bro! Some kind of trick?"

"Nah, no tricks. It just seems like you're confused," you reply. "Maybe you should take some time to mull things over, figure out how you really feel about things. Hell, just because you're in love with Akio doesn't mean you can't like other people too."

"Huh..." Seishiro ponders. "I guess... dammit, all this stuff is confusing as hell! Why'd you have to go and tell me something like that?"

"Seishiro, is there something wrong?" Satomi's voice calls out from behind.

"Gah!" Seishiro yells. "Don't sneak up on me like that!"

Satomi adjusts her glasses. "You were yelling a lot, and you seemed awfully distraught. Are you ill?"

"No, not at all!" Seishiro replies. "Hey, what have you got there?"

"Your present," Satomi replies. "It's that action movie you kept raving about."

"Gun Force V?!" Seishiro exclaims. "Holy crap, that's awesome!"

"I thought you would like it..." Satomi replies. "I mean, it's not all that intellectually stimulating, but I'm sure there'd be no harm in watching it on a snowy night like this..."

Seishiro gives a small smile as he looks at the science nerd. Suddenly, he places his hands on her shoulders and lifts her up, planting her just right of her current position.

"Hm? Why did you-MPH!" Satomi begins, but is interrupted as Seishiro kisses her under the mistletoe.

"I guess love really is in the air today," Saki laughs.

"Well, it is Christmas Eve," you reply. "Damn, this place is going to be chaos come Valentine's day."

The party is becoming quite crowded now, as the rest of the class seems to have appeared in droves, along with Class 1 and 3. The Christmas music has begun to play, but nobody is dancing yet. Isamu appears to waiting under some mistletoe by the doorframe, Chihiro is handing out cups of hot chocolate to everyone, and Kazuma seems to be chatting to a few of his classmates. >Isamu

You make your way over to Isamu as he stands in position and he welcomes you warmly. "Ah, my good friend Ryoji Shida! How are you on this, the eve of the greatest day of the year?"

"You seem chipper," you mention. "Well, you always seem chipper. But today especially."

"Mind you step," Isamu smiles, pointing out the mistletoe above his head. "You don't want to lock lips with me while I'm awaiting the warm embrace of some beautiful and perfect goddesses!"

Of course that's his plan... though you're sure he has a specific 'Goddess' in mind.

"Ah, before I forget!" Isamu points out, as he hunkers down and grabs a cardboard box beside him. He opens it up and begins to file through the contents. "A-ha! Here is your gift, Ryoji Shida! Blessed by the gods themselves!"

Isamu hands you what appears to be an overly large framed photo of... himself. Cutting a dynamic pose straight out of some action anime, with his handwriting scrawled over it, reading "To my biggest fan, Ryoji Shida!"

"Okay... explain."

"Glad you asked!" Isamu smiles.

"More of a demand, but whatever."

"That right there is a signed autograph from the great hero Isamu Iori, the first man to achieve his Archangel form! The man, the myth, the legend!"

"Wait, is that box just filled with the same picture?" you ask. "Did you just make a bunch of copies?"

"I autographed each one individually!" Isamu boasts. "A great gift, is it not?"

>I mean, I guess your hearts in the right place...
>Sure... thanks.

>Isamu, this is the worst gift you could possibly give someone.

"Oh, really?" Isamu remarks. "I thought it was a glorious gift to give!"

"It sure is!" Akemi exclaims, giving a thumbs up as she holds onto her picture. "Look at this, Ryoji! I'm gonna put it up on my wall!"

"Well other than Akemi, who loves everything," you explain. "Nobody wants a picture of your face. I mean, I'm sure your heart was in the right place, but... this really sucks, Isamu."

"Oh..." Isamu replies. "That's quite the shame, Ryoji Shida... I was really hoping you would like it."

"I'm not trying to be a jerk," you reply. "I just thought I should tell you. Nobody wants a gift like this."

"Well... that is sad," Isamu frowns, before perking up again, "But what kind of hero would I be if I were to give up after being knocked down! Ryoji Shida, I beseech you to aid me in gift-buying come the next holiday season! It's clear that your expertise is much needed!"

"Sure, whatever," you reply.

It's then that she enters the room... Rei. Without a hint of hesitation, she scopes out Isamu, adorned in a Christmas themed dress.

"Wow, you're actually wearing that?" you scoff as she approaches.

"Leave me alone," Rei groans. "Chihiro tricked me into putting this on. She said I could prove that I could wear anything better than Saki... but look at her! Kobashi isn't even wearing it!"

"Miss Arisato!" Isamu smiles. "How wonderful of you to join us!"

"Oh hey, Isamu..." Rei mutters, blushing slightly, trying to act cool and aloof. "You're looking... Christmas-y."

Isamu chuckles. "You're certainly adorned for the season as well! Here, have a gift!"

Isamu reaches into the bag and hands her yet another signed photo of himself.

"What... what the hell is this?" Rei asks.

"Why, it's a framed photo of-"

"I know what it is!" Rei yells. "Is that seriously your gift? This is terrible!"

"Ah, it seems my two good friends are in agreement!" Isamu laughs. "But Miss Arisato, you are in luck! Not only do you receive such a magnificent...ly underwhelming photo, but I picked these out for you!"

Isamu reaches deep into the bottom of his box and pulls out a smaller shoe-box. "Here, for you!"

"Are these..." Rei begins. "New running shoes?"

"Indeed they are!" Isamu smiles. "I noticed that your current pair were quite worn. Now, I'm not sure if I have the right size, but I can exchange them if they don't fi-"

"They'll fit," Rei smiles. "Thanks, Isamu."

"Arisato," Agent White speaks as he looms over the three of you. "May I speak with you for a moment?"

"Huh?" a confused Rei mutters. "Well, I was kind of in the middle of-"

"This was not a request," Agent White replies. "It'll just be a moment."

"Oh..." Rei mutters, as she is forced to follow Agent White for whatever reason.

"B-but Miss Arisato..." a saddened Isamu mumbles. "The mistletoe..."

"Tough break," you reply. "I guess that moment's passed."

Isamu lets out a sigh... before he stands up straight again, a determined look in his eyes. "No. No, Ryoji Shida. I can wait."

Well, that's some dedication. As you look around, you see that Akemi has made her way over to Akira, while Raiden has entered the room, supporting himself with a crutch.

>Talk to Akemi and Akira

You follow Akemi's path towards Akira, who seems to be moping in the corner by herself.

"Merry Christmas, Akira!" Akemi smiles, oblivious to her attempts to hide away by herself. "I've got a little present for you!"

"Akemi, I'm not in the mood..." Akira mutters. "It's bad enough that I've been coaxed into this ridiculous outfit, but..."

"Oh, don't be sad!" Akemi exclaims. "It's Christmas! The happiest day of the year!"

"It doesn't feel like a happy-" Akira begins, but she is quickly cut off.

"Look what I got you!" Akemi exclaims, presenting a wrapped gift to the larger girl. "Open it up!"

"Okay..." a hesitant Akira says, as she slowly unwraps the box with her one working hand as Akemi holds it for her and opens it up. "Akemi, it's..."

"It's that gauntlet arm you wanted!" Akemi smiles, while giving a thumbs up. "I know it's a little earlier than expected, but Chihiro accidentally let me have coffee last night, and I was up for hours! I haven't slept since!"

Akira stares at the gauntlet, before she begins shaking. Fighting back tears, Akira looks up at the little tech-wizard. "Akemi... thank you so much."

Akira rushes Akemi with a hug, causing the two to topple over. The two eventually wise back to their feet as Akemi dusts herself off. "Glad you like it! Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I hear Akemi Claus nearby! I better check it out!"

As Akemi bounces off, Akira continues to stare at the mechanical arm before her.

>How are you holding up, Akira?

Akira smiles at you. "Much better now, Ryoji. Candy cane?"

She places down the metallic arm in order to reach into her pockets and offer you some candy befitting of the season.

"Sure, why not?" you reply, as you take the cane and shove it into your mouth. "Good to know you're feeling better."

"Well, this season is going to be a difficult time for me," Akira explains. "Especially New Years. I... I'm not ready to break the news about my arm to my parents... but Isamu kindly invited me to spend New Year with his family instead. A tough decision... but it will be nice to see the Iori's again."

You hear the stomping of boots behind you, as Taka marches up. In a shock to you, he summons his sword as he does... only to swat away a piece of mistletoe on the ceiling like it was a baseball. "There we are!" he snorts. "Didn't want you to get tempted while we stood here."

"Very funny," Akira replies.

"Hey kid," Taka nods towards you. "I can see you're being nice to my number one gal. I like that."

"You've been oddly nice lately," you mutter. "Well, not nice... but you've been oddly less terrible. What changed?"

Taka pauses. "Well... a certain refusal saw me questioning a few things about myself... and then when I saw what happened to this lady, I... well, it is Christmas. Let's say my heart grew three sizes. How's you night been, blue?"

"Akemi finished my new arm," Akira smiles with pride.

"Hey, that's pretty awesome!" Taka grunts. "Hey, you wanna dance?"

"Dance?" Akira asks. "I never took you for a dancer."

"Well, I'm full of surprises, ain't I?" Taka chuckles. "Come on."

Akira smiles and takes Taka's hand, as the two begin to dance together. It's good to see Akira finding happiness and friendship, even if it is with one of the last people you'd expect.

You make your way over to Chihiro, who is still serving small cups of hot chocolate to the others as they enter. The first thing you notice is that her Christmas outfit has a much higher-cut skirt than the others. Not that surprising, considering how little she usually wears. "Well, I'm surprised," you smirk. "I would have figured you'd be all over the mistletoe."

"Ohoho!" Chihiro laughs. "That's where you'd be right, my dear Ryoji!"

She point up above you, to see that some of the mistletoe is currently hung up above her.

"Huh, I don't remember putting that one there," you mention.

"I brought my own, of course!"

"Ah," you nod. "So, how's your grandmother?"

Chihiro pauses. "She's stable, thankfully. Of course, she's still in the hospital and likely will still be there come New Year... when she saw me, she was quite delirious. She barely remembered who I was, but she said that I was quite... beautiful. The next few days she finally came too, and... well, she apologised."

"She did?"

"Yes..." Chihiro replies. "She said she was visited by a spirit, an angel... she realised that she was wrong, and... she wants to make things right."

"Well, that sounds good," you reply.

"Yes, but..." Chihiro mentions. "As lovely as that is, I now find myself in a bit of a moral quandary."

"And what's that?"

"Well, I would quite like to visit my dearest papa on New Years," Chihiro explains. "But that would mean leaving my Grandmother in the hospital to spend the day on her own. I miss my father, and I know that my grandmother hasn't been the most loving of family members to me... but she wants to make a change, and... well, she's quite a lonely woman. She's spent so many years by herself in that little cottage..."

>You should get to see your dad on New Years. Your grandmother will be fine.

>You should go home, but leave Alice to stay with her sister. I think Charlotte will appreciate that.

"Hmm..." Chihiro ponders. "I suppose you're right, my dear Ryoji! That idea is the best of both worlds! Though it will be sad to be parted from my beloved aunt... at least she'll be able to spend time with her sister."

"I'd like that!" Alice exclaims, poking her head out from under the table. "My sister shouldn't be lonely on New Years!"

"Alice, what are you doing under there?" you ask.

"I'm teaching my student about Christmas!" Alice explains. "By the way, is he called Sandy Clowns, or Father Snow?"

"Neither," you reply. "And why is Concordia here? She'll be found out!"

"Don't worry, she's under a table!" Alice smiles.

"That's not good enough-"

"And Dreamer's using her powers to hide her!"

"Oh," you remark. "That's probably good enough."

"And so you tear apart pieces of paper and jokes fall out?" Concordia remarks. "This is a confusing tradition."

It's then that you're joined by a certain member of Class 1, gingerly approaching Chihiro.

"Hello there..." Makoto mutters, looking a little nervous.

Chihiro grins. "Why, if it isn't my dearest Makoto? Why so shy? If it's because of the mistletoe, don't fret! You have no obligation to kiss me, though many boys your age would consider it a wonderful opportunity-"

Chihiro is quickly interrupted as Makoto throws his arms around her and hugs her tight. "I heard about your grandmother. If there's anything I can do to help, just ask."

"O-oh..." Chihiro mutters, clearly taken aback. "Why, h-how kind of you..."

>Talk to Hoshi, Hiro and Nariko

You make your way over to the trio of Hoshi, Hiro and Nariko, as Nariko is busy picking up her cats. "Oh, so sorry about these little guys!" she smiles, as RC tries to paw at the ever-nervous Hoshi's chest. "I guess they're just excited for the season!"

"I'm surprised you didn't dress your cats up like elves or reindeer," you point out.

"Ryoji, I'm not a monster!" Nariko exclaims. "I'm not going to force my little babies into a costume that they don't want! Besides, I places little reindeer horns on them but they removed them quickly."

Hiro lets out a small laugh. "Oh, cats can be pretty picky like that. I'm sure they would have looked great all dressed up."

"What a sweet thing to say, Hiro!" Nariko's face lights up. "How kind of you!"

"Well, I suppose now's as good a time as any to say sweet things," Hiro smiles. "Especially with how sad you've seemed lately."

"Oh..." Nariko mutters. "Well, it warms my heart to know you're worried about me you little cutie! But you shouldn't be too concerned, I've been working with Sora to help keep my... problem in check. That reminds me, I ought to give him his gift as thanks! Sit tight, you two! I'll be back in just a moment! I may even bring some mistletoe!"

"M-m-mistletoe?!" a panicked Hoshi mumbles. "W-w-why?!"

Nariko winks as she runs off in the direction of Sora, who appears to be attempting a conversation with his brother.

"I don't see why she needs mistletoe," Hiro scratches his head. "There's plenty here already! Look, there's even some between you and I, Hoshi!"

"T-THERE IS?!" Hoshi yells, as she looks up. Sure enough, there it is, exactly where you placed it. "O-oh no! D-Don't you know what t-this means?"

"What?" Hiro asks.

"I-it means we have to... to... kiiiiiiiiss!" Hoshi whines in a panicked tone.

"W-what?!" Hoshi cries. "O-okay... h-here goes..."

"Well, I've never done anything like this before," Hiro points out. "But I guess it is tradition!"

Hiro pulls Hoshi in and the two lock lips in a short yet tender kiss. To your surprise, Hiro seems to be giving it his all, but the boy is so oblivious you have no doubt that he doesn't realise. The two pull away, as Hoshi looks dazed.

"T-t-that was..." Hoshi mumbles, clearly impressed.

"That was pretty nice!" Hiro smiles. "I guess that's why so many of you guys like doing it!"

"What do you think you're doing?" Reiji asks as he storms towards the two.

Hiro smiles. "Hi, Reiji! Hoshi and I just saw this mistletoe and-"

"And you decided to force yourself on her?" Reiji mutters. "Is that it?"

"I don't think so," Hiro earnestly replies. "Did I, Hoshi?"

"N-no..."

"Calm down Reiji," you sigh. "It's just Hiro."

Reiji adjusts his glasses. "This is exactly what I feared would happen, Ryoji. Hoshi shouldn't be put into situations like this."

Hoshi mumbles, "I-I don't really m-mind, Reiji..."

"She should be focusing on her studies, not her relationships," Reiji stresses in an angry and bitter tone. "She can't waste time on a relationship, especially when it won't last..."

Reiji catches himself before he says something very cruel.

"A-are you okay?" Hoshi asks.

"I'm fine," Reiji sighs. "I'm sorry, Hoshi. It wasn't my place to say that..."

"O-oh..." Hoshi replies. "Well, d-do you want to dance?"

"Dance?" Reiji asks. "I... yes, I think I do."

As Hoshi and Reiji wander off together, you and Hiro are soon joined by Nariko. "Hi there, what did I miss?" she smiles.

"Well, Hoshi and Hiro kissed under the mistletoe," you explain.

"Oh how wonder... wait, what?" Nariko asks, he smile quickly fading as she realises what you just said. "They... Hiro, is this true?"

"Yes," Hiro answers. "It was right above us, and those were the rules."

"You... you mean I..." Nariko mutters. "Hiro finally had his first kiss and... it was with Hoshi? And I missed it...?"

"Yeah... sorry," you reply.

Nariko's eyes drift downward in one of the most disappointed faces you've ever seen.

"Oh, don't be sad!" Hiro smiles. "If it makes you feel any better, the mistletoe is between you and me now!"

"Oh Hiro, you dense little angel..." she mutters as her smile slowly returns and she kisses him lightly on the cheek. "Never change."

As Nariko and Hiro continue their conversation, you notice Akio making his way towards the main stage of the hall.

>Talk to Kazuma

Time to check in on your kouhai and see how the little idiot is enjoying his Christmas break. As you approach him, you're incredibly surprised to find that he's not brooding. Instead, he's chatting away with his little gang... with some black-haired girl practically clinging to him.

"Hey kouhai," you smirk. "Who's the lucky lady?"

"We've met before!" the girl smiles as she extends her hand for a handshake. "Mio Shirai, the merchant of darkgate!"

"Nope, not ringing any bells," you shake your head.

"Ryoji, this is Io," Kaz explains.

You raise an eyebrow. "Your friend who left? I remember her having brown hair. Suspenders look about the same, though..."

"It's a long story," Kazuma explains. "Either way, she's visiting for Christmas."

"Yep, I get one day before I go back home for the foreseeable future, and I'm going to make the most of it!" Mio exclaims, hugging Kaz tight.

"So how are you spending you New Year, kouhai?" you ask.

Kazuma growls. "Please stop calling me that... and me and Kiriko will be visiting my mother. I'm not looking forward to it..."

"You got a problem with your mom?" you ask.

Kazuma shakes his head. "And I'm sure you have a perfect relationship with your family-"

"I do," you fire back. "I love my parents and they love me."

"Oh... that's odd," Kazuma points out. "Around here, that's usually not the case."

"Do not worry, Kazuma," Mayu points out, decked out in a surprisingly revealing Christmas outfit despite her serious manner. Must have been dragged into it. "I will be by your side the entire time."

"Ah, introducing your mother to the girlfriend?" you smirk. "Always a treat. My mom loves the hell out of Saki-"

"Just friends," Kazuma interrupts. "For the last time, Mayu is not my girlfriend."

"Why do you tease us with this every single holiday?" Mayu asks.

>Well, I mainly tease Kaz. You're just in the crossfire.

"What?!" Kaz panics as he looks up above.

Mio begins to laugh. "Oh boy, this could be saucy! Kaz and Mayu, sitting in a tree!"

Kiriko joins in on the action as well, excitedly fawning over the possibility. "Kaz? Mayu? Mistletoe? It's prefect!"

"What, we're not going to-"

"It's the rules!" Kiriko yells. "You have to!"

"At least just a peck on the cheek!" Mio chimes in.

"No!" Kaz yells. Mayu meanwhile is hanging her face low, with her eyes wide in shame. Her face is also redder than anything you've seen before. Huh... maybe she's actually thinking about it. "This isn't fair, Ryoji set a ton of this crap on the ceiling. You can't avoid it!"

"Come on, Kaz!" Kiriko pleads. "It's the spirit of the season!"

"Gotta do it, kouhai," you tease. "It's a time-honoured tradition."

Kaz lets out as sigh, as Mayu turns her head to face him. "... On the cheek. Make it quick."

"R-really?" Kaz asks.

"In order to preserve our honour and dignity..." Mayu mutters. "I shall make that sacrifice. Please, make it quick, Kazuma."

Kaz winces, as he slowly puckers his lips and leans in towards Mayu's cheek, and... he pulls away like a wimp. "Nope, can't do it," Kazuma shakes his head. "I'm not falling for Ryoji's game!"

"Aww, that's disappointing..." Kiriko mumbles.

"You almost had them," Mio shakes her head towards you. "Well played, senpai."

"Not well-played enough," you admit, before taking your leave.

>Talk to Akio

You make your way over to Akio, who has now for whatever reason climbed atop the main stage in the hall and appears to be fiddling with wires. You join him up on stage and give him a quick tap on the shoulder.

"Oh hey Ryoji, you mind giving me a hand with these things?" Akio asks.

"I wouldn't know where to even begin," you point out.

"You're right," Akio sighs. "Where's Akemi when you need her?"

"What are you doing, Akio?" you ask.

Akio rises to his feet and dusts himself off. "Glad you asked, Ryoji! You caught me just in time before my big display of my love for Hikaru!"

"Your... what?" you ask.

"Like I said, I'm going to make this the best Christmas ever for Hikaru. So I'm going to get up on-stage, display my love to the entire school, maybe whip out a nice little guitar serenade for my babe, and then she'll be rushing on stage to embrace me before you know it!"

"Did Shinji approve of this?" you ask.

Akio shakes his head. "No, this is all ad-lib. Why?"

"Because it's stupid," you point out. "Think about what you're doing for a second."

"Okay, done."

"Now think about whether Hikaru would like that or not," you point out.

Akio ponders. "Well if I was Hikaru I'd love it... which means the real Hikaru will hate. I get'cha. Huh..."

"You were probably going to just embarrass yourself on stage in front of everyone."

"Whoa, I can't have that!" Akio replies. "I'm the coolest guy in school. But yeah, this isn't going to work... my family would always say go big or go home, but I guess that doesn't apply here... did you know my uncle was a giant?"

"I don't think the saying applies there either," you remark.

"Dammit," Akio mutters. "I had such a grand gesture planned. Now what am I supposed to do?"

>Do something big for Hikaru, but in private. Don't cause a scene.
>It's not about doing something grand for one day. You have to stay consistent.

>It's not about doing something grand for one day. You have to stay consistent.

"Consistent?" Akio asks.

"Yeah," you reply. "Think about it. You do something big on Christmas and she loves it..."

"Nice."

"But then Christmas ends. Then what do you do?" you point out. "You can't just make one big gesture then take it easy forever. You love Hikaru? Then show it to her. Every day."

"What are you two doing?" Hikaru asks, standing below the stage looking up at you and Akio.

"Babe!" The shocked Akio yells. "I was just, uhh..."

"About to make a grand gesture that ultimately doesn't mean anything and embarrassing yourself in the process like an idiot?"

"Yeah... that one," Akio sighs, before taking a deep breath. "But I'm not going to do that. Instead... I'm going to tell you something."

Akio hops of the stage in order to look Hikaru in the eyes as he speaks. "Hikaru... I'm making a promise to you. Right here, right now."

"Akio, what are you-"

"I promise that I'm going to treat you right," Akio explains, as he places his hands on her shoulders. "I'm going to spend all my time with you. I'm going to tell you I love you every day. Tomorrow, we'll have a picnic with your brother. A real one, I'm gonna make him. I'm going to use every last bit of my energy and time to spend with you, to give you what you want, what you need... I love you, Hikaru. I know I've been real bad at showing it, but I do. I want to spend my life with you, hell I bought a ring before we started dating!"

"Akio, I-"

"I want to be the best man possible for you... because you're the greatest thing that's ever happened to me," Akio continues. "But... sometimes I'll have to train. A lot. With what we're dealing with I can't stop working... but I promise that I'll never over-do it again. And... and when I am training... well, then... then..."

"Then I'll join you," Hikaru finishes. "We'll train together. Because... well, you might be an idiot... but you're my idiot."

As the two lovebirds embrace, you smile.

"Hey everybody!" Nanami exclaims. "Look outside!"

"What is it?" Ken asks. "Enemies? Some kind of emergency?"

"Demons?" Raiden asks.

"No!" Nanami beams with pride. "It's Akemi Claus!"

You step outside to see Akemi standing in the snow, carrying a large sack of presents with her while adorned in a Santa outfit.

"Hee hee ho!" Akemi Claus exclaims, completely screwing up Santa's catchphrase.

>Oh look, everyone! It's Akemi Claus!

"Hee hee ho! That's me!" Akemi Claus exclaims. "I'm here to give out gifts to all the good children, and a lump of snow to all the naughty children!"

"This is all so wildly incorrect," Reiji mutters.

"Can you repeat that last part?" Concordia asks, appearing with a pen and notepad by Alice's side.

"So, what kind of gifts do you have in those boxes?" Ken asks.

Akemi Claus chuckles. "Hee hee ho! The boxes are empty! The gift is friendship!"

Well, you can't expect Akemi to afford an extra gift for everyone, can you?

"First off, I have Sayeka! Sayeka, will you step up please?"

Sayeka steps forward, looking as graceful as ever in a Christmas outfit that Chihiro undoubtedly not to gracefully stuffed her into. "I'm sure you know what gift I'm going to give you!" Akemi Claus smiles.

"I can hazard a guess," Sayeka smiles. "Though I believe I should turn down your gift. I don't really feel I would deserve a-"

"FRIENDSHIP!" Akemi Claus yells, before hugging Sayeka tight.

"Oh... well, I suppose this is very pleasant..." Sayeka smiles, before Akemi Claus moves on to her next target.

"Kuin! Hee hee ho!"

The small green-haired girl marches up and points a finger directly in Akemi's face. "Listen up, subject! I demand three things! A pony, a tank, and a-"

"FRIENDSHIP!" Akemi Claus yells before embracing Kuin yet again.

"Who gave you the permission to hug your glorious dictator! Gado!"

"Having trouble?" Gado chuckles.

"N-no actually... this is very nice..."

"NEXT UP, RAIDEN!" Akemi exclaims. "Hee hee ho!"

Raiden steps forward and Akemi smiles at him.

"For your gift... a lump of snow!"

"W-what?" Raiden asks, a genuine tone of hurt in his voice.

"Just kidding!" Akemi yells. "You could never be bad, Raiden! FRIENDSHIP!"

"Don't scare me like that again..." Raiden mutters as he happily accepts the embrace.

Akemi proceeds to do this for every single person present, promising to get to the others later as well.

"I hope you're enjoying your Christmas, boys and girls!" Akemi Claus exclaims. "HEE HEE HO!"

>You must really love the holidays to keep doing this, Akemi.

>Thanks for visiting us, Akemi Claus. I'm sure we'll see you next year.

"Of course!" Akemi Claus laughs. "Akemi Claus visits every year! HEE HEE HO!"

Akemi Claus scampers off behind a corner, and about a minute later, Akemi steps out again. Did she just change clothes in the middle of the snow?

"Hey Ryoji, what did I miss?" she smiles.

"Oh, not much," you reply. "Akemi Claus dropped by for a while."

"She did?" Akemi gasps. "No way! I can't believe I missed it!"

"Oh well," you reply. "Come on inside, it's freezing out here."

Akemi hops on your back, as the two of you rejoin the party. As soon as you enter, you see that Isamu is back at his mistletoe, talking to a familiar blonde... just not the blonde you were expecting.

"So, you're Isamu Iori, right?" Amaya smiles. "You were in the tournament to rescue me. In fact... you did rescue me!"

"Indeed I did!" Isamu exclaims. "For I am Isamu Iori, the greatest knight the land has ever known!"

"A knight, you say?" Amaya asks.

"That's correct! A brave and gallant one!" Isamu continues to boast. "And it is my duty to rescue beautiful and gallant princesses such as yourself, Amaya Shibata!"

"A... princess?" Amaya blushes. "Oh my... it's a wonder we've never spoken before. A brave, gallant knight..."

"Indeed!" Isamu exclaims. "A gallant knight that happens to be standing beneath mistletoe, awaiting the love and affection of any kind goddess!"

"Mistletoe?" Amaya wonders. "Well... my family don't observe traditions like this... but I suppose I do owe you a small reward for rescuing me..."

Amaya closes her eyes and begins to lean into Isamu, and Isamu leans in as well. Oh, that pervert... you seriously hope Rei doesn't see this, or she'll be crushed.

Suddenly, Isamu pulls away before the two lock lips. He places his fist to his mouth, closing his eyes as he solemnly shakes his head. "One hundred million apologies, Amaya Shibata. I cannot go through with this act of passion!"

"Oh, that's okay..." Amaya replies, tilting her head. "Is there something wrong?"

"I must confess..." Isamu sighs. "I, Isamu Iori, am a knight dedicated to the protection a rescue of all innocents, including all the beautiful goddesses and princesses of the world! It has always been my dream to find love amongst all the perfect feminine wonders that this world has to offer! Those of the large chest! Those of the small chest! Those of the resplendent rear! But now, I must admit... those days are over. I cannot pledge myself to seeking the love of many princesses, because I find myself infatuated... with only one. I, Isamu Iori... am in love."

"Isamu?" Rei ponders, as she arrives back into the room. Seems she heard all of that.

"M-miss Arisato!" Isamu breaks from his dramatic trance to nervously blush and chuckle. "I-I was just-"

Rei wastes no time in speeding up to Isamu and planting a kiss on his lips as hard as she can. She pulls away for just a brief moment to explain herself. "I'm done taking things slow, Isamu. Hurry up and ask me."

Isamu takes a nervous gulp before speaking. "Very well, Miss Arisato... will you be my princess?"

Rei smiles. "Only if you be my knight."

As the two embrace and kiss under the mistletoe, you find yourself approaching them.

Rei gives a small laugh. "I know, I know... I guess we went through hell before we could actually get to starting this."

"We did go through hell, Miss Arisato!" Isamu replies. "And I slayed a demon for your heart!"

"It's the most romantic story..." Rei smiles. "Of course, we can never tell it to anyone. Well, except your little siblings, they'll probably think it's a tall tale."

"And they'll believe it all the same!" Isamu smiles. "I cannot wait for you to see them again! Oh, I have to kiss you again, Miss Arisato!"

"Wait," Rei holds up a finger, before reaching into her pocket and pulling out the plastic tiara and placing it atop her head. "Carry on."

The two continue to kiss, as Akira rushes over to them. Without hesitation, she embraces them with a hug, making the most use of her newly attached metal arm. The three happily hug it out as you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around and... wow.

"Saki, now that outfit is..." you trail off at the end, your jaw agape.

Saki simply blushes. "The one Chihiro picked out for me was more... revealing than I expected."

"You look amazing," you reply.

"Well..." Saki mutters. "I was hoping that we could... dance."

"Wow, in front of people this time?" you smile. "No fleeing out into the hallway?"

"No," Saki smiles. "Come on."

The two of you make your way to the dancefloor and begin to engage in another waltz. Heh, you're exactly as awful as you were months ago.

"Just so you know, I'm dipping you this time," you smirk.

"I'd like to see you try!" Saki giggles back.

You pause. "We really have come a long way this year, haven't we?"

"Yeah..." Saki replies. "I don't think I need to tell you that... despite all the craziness and the horror around us... this has been the best year of my life."

"Feeling's mutual, Sak."

"Mistletoe above, Ryoji. You know what to do!"

Immediately, you dip Saki down.

"Hey, what did I tell you?" Saki scolds, but is unable to hide her smile.

You smile back in turn. "The master delinquent strikes again against his eternal foil, the law-loving head of class!"

"Oh no!" Saki plays along. "You've got me again, master delinquent!"

"Excuse me," a voice behind the two of you speaks. You turn around, to see Wei towering over the both of you.

"G-grandfather!" Saki stutters, trying to collect herself, embarrassed that he bore witness to her flirting with you.

Wei's eyes survey the both of you, a constant stern look on his face.

"Saki... you have been head of Class 2 since April of this year," Wei comments. "In that time... you have done a satisfactory job."

"S-satisfactory?" Saki gasps. While it may seem mild, satisfactory is probably the greatest praise you can expect to get from Principal Wei, and Saki is astounded to receive any true praise from her former idol.

"Indeed," Wei replies. "And I would like for you to have this."

Wei hands over a large heavy gift to Saki, which she cautiously opens up as Wei walks away. Not staying to see her reaction, huh? Saki pulls out a large silver shield, with a red dragon emblazoned upon it.

"This... this is my grandfather's shield..." Saki mutters. "But... why would he want me to have it? Why would he give it to me?"

>Because deep down I think he's really proud of you, Sak.

"You think so?" Saki asks.

"Yeah, I really do," you reply. "On the outside, he might seem like a big stern jackass who I really want to punch in the face... but deep down I think he really is your granpa, and he's proud of all the good you've down for us."

Saki looks back at Wei as he takes his leave, then back at the shield as she holds it in her hand. "This... this is an amazing gift. Oh, I wish I wasn't wearing something so ridiculous when he gave me it!"

"Ridiculous?!" Rini laughs. "You kidding? The curves on that suit are the greatest thing I've ever seen!"

"Agreed!" Chihiro laughs. "You look absolutely splendid in that outfit! Almost as perfect as my dear Sayeka!"

"Well, I'm sure Saki looks better than I do..." Sayeka replies.

The night rolls on, and the party continues. Before long everyone is on the dance floor. You're sharing dances with just about everyone who comes to you. Akemi, Nanami, Rei, Sayeka, Chihiro, a quick boogie with Ken and Kosuke... but always coming back to Saki. Your liberal application of the mistletoe truly took it's toll on the night, as many of the lovers present used it as their chance to get closer. The most astounding kiss of the night isn't shared between Hoshi and Hiro, it's not the one between Takeshi and Tekina a couple hours later, hell it's not even the kiss shared between Kamiko and Yasutake... no that honour shall go to the ground-breaking smooch between Chihiro and Sayeka towards the end of the evening. Sayeka was blushing like you wouldn't believe after, and Chihiro continued to tease her over it the rest of the night.

As the party ended and the students returned to the dorms, you began to give out your gifts to your classmates. An assortment of odds and ends, items you've figured they'd like after this time knowing them. A new fishing rod for Ken to replace the one you broke way back in the day, a set of tea-cups for Chihiro... Saki loved the law textbook as well, as you expected. She did however promise to use it against your delinquent ways, so that's something you'll have to watch out for. Maybe she'll actually just throw the thick text at you when you misbehave. After a round of hot chocolate shared in the dorm, you retire to bed with Saki to warm you up on such a cold, pleasant night. A perfect night, where everything went right. It's all you could have ever wanted. And yet, as you close your eyes to rest for the night, that feeling of dread sinks in. After all, despite how wonderful a Christmas this was, the best you could imagine, you do know one thing.

This is the calm before the storm.

Thanks for running Booker, was a feel good thread.

More holiday shenanigans and then some more family issues because of KazMom. Then some totally platonic flirting with Mio and Mayu.Though since Kaz is a wuss that couldn't even kiss her on the cheek, maybe no flirting.

>BONUS SCENE

Mio stands patiently at the gate, placing her bags down with a tentative breath. That stench in the air... as foul as it is, it's the smell of home. Her true home. With her true family... though she doubts they'll all be happy to see her.

She whips out her phone and checks her messages. Nothing new from Kaz, but he said earlier he would meet her at the gate. In the freezing winter cold, Mio turns her attention to her suitcase as she waits for her best friend to arrive. She pulls out a small bottle of perfume, trying it out on herself. Not bad at all... Atasuke would pay a fine price for something like this. Hell, since there's just the one bottle she could likely start a bidding war between him and Chihiro Toriyama. They both have plenty of money to spend.

Mio pauses, wondering what's taking Kazuma so long. It's not like there's any other gates he could be meeting her at. Perhaps he was pulled into making some kind of Christmas decor-

“Surprise attack!” Kiriko's voice calls out, the hyper-active girl teleporting directly above Mio, landing on her with a tight and playful hug.

“Ah, you sneaky ninja!” Mio laughs. “I've missed you!”

“I've missed you too!” Kiriko smiles. “I'm so glad we didn't lose you to... that place.”

“Oh...” Mio mutters, looking down. “Well... I'm still living in that place for the foreseeable future, but there was no way I was going to miss Christmas with all of my favourite people!”

“You're hair looks great by the way!” Kiriko adds. “I didn't get a chance to say it back there, but your look even better with darker hair.”

“Need a little help?” Kaz's hand comes stretching out, offering to help Mio to her feet.

Mio smiles as Kaz pulls her up out of the snow. “Oh, how kind of you! You're a regular gentleman, Kaz!”

Mio doesn't get a chance to keep talking, as Kaz quickly pulls her in and holds her tight. She returns the hug, and the two remain entwined in a long, comfortable silence for the moment. A wonderful friendship, saved from the brink of destruction.

“The others are eager to see you,” Kaz smiles.

Mio laughs. “That's either very good or very bad...” she explains. “I can't expect everyone will be happy to see me. I certainly wasn't well-liked when I left.”

Kaz leads Mio up the pathway into the courtyard, even offering to carry her bags like a gentleman. For some reason, Mio didn't care for that as much as she usually would... she didn't want to be treated like a guest. That only serves to remind her that her time back is so short lived. Only a day... but it's day she'll make the absolute most of.

Mio reaches the courtyard, catching figures in the distance. Mayu stands waiting at the top for Kaz and Kiriko. As soon as she sees Mio, however, she reaches for her sword.

“Intruder!” Mayu yells, pulling out her katana. “State your busi-”

“Mayu, it's Io,” Kaz sighs.

Mayu stares at Mio, confused. “That cannot be true, Kazuma. Io had brown hair, brown eyes, and the suspenders she wore were slightly different than this.”

“The first thing you ever bought from me was teen romance novel,” Mio states.

Mayu stares with wide eyes, before sheathing her sword. “That is... untrue.”

“Then why are you sheathing your blade?” Kaz smirks.

“I believe this is Io... or rather, Mio,” Mayu replies. “It is good to see you again, despite your change in name. I liked you more than I do most of this school's students.”

“Oh, that just warms my heart!” Mio smiles. “I always liked you too, Mayu!”

“Oh... it's you, isn't it?”

Mio turns to the source of the new voice. Of course it's Risa.

“Hello, Risa!” Mio smiles. “I know what you're about to say!”

“Oh?” Risa raises an eyebrow. “And what's that?”

Mio clears her throat, putting on a lower voice while wagging her finger. “Whatever name you're using, it doesn't matter! A snake that sheds it's skin is still a snake, and I can't wait until you're gone-”

Mio is interrupted by a swift hug from Risa.

“W-what?” Mio asks in shock, her lip quivering a little. “W-well... I can't say I expected-”

“Shut up for a second,” Risa whispers in her ear. “I heard about your home. I'm not going to give you a hard time about that. Especially not on Christmas.”

“Risa...” Mio mutters. “Thank you. You know, I always liked you-”

“No you didn't,” Risa replies. “I was horrible to you.”

“True...”

Risa pulls away from the hug, placing her hands on Mio's shoulders. “Welcome home, Io... Mio... whatever.”

"Aww, that's disappointing..." Kiriko mumbles.

"You almost had them," Mio shakes her head towards Ryoji. "Well played, senpai."

"Not well-played enough," Ryoji admits, before taking his leave.

“So you're really not going to kiss Mayu?” Kiriko asks.

“Nope,” Kaz replies, crossing his arms defiantly.

“Why not?”

Kaz sighs. “It would be weird! Mayu's my friend and... well, it... it just wouldn't feel right.”

“I do concur with Kazuma,” Mayu explains. “I would much rather not be engaged with him in such a manner.”

“Yeah, exact... you wouldn't?” Kaz mutters.

Risa chuckles. “Geez, you don't have to say it like that! Mayu, that could break anyone's heart!”

“The heart is a muscle, you cannot break it,” Mayu replies, the metaphor sailing over her head as usual.

“It's a shame that you guys didn't even so much a have a quick kiss,” Kiriko replies. “This party really needs a little more spice!”

Amaya politely raises her hand. “Or we could attempt to have a good wholesome fun time without resorting to or forcing any debauch-”

“Nope, we demand smut!” Kiriko exclaims. “Smut! Smut! Smut!”

“Well, why does it have to involve me?” Kazuma protests.

“You're the one under the mistletoe!”

“Mio's been hanging right next to me! Why doesn't she and Mayu kiss instead?”

“I'd be okay with that,” Mio giggles.

“See, it's completely unreasonable to-wait, what?” Kazuma mutters.

Mio shrugs. “It sounds like a fun time! And besides, Mayu is looking gorgeous tonight! Someone ought to give her some attention.”

“I did not choose this eveningwear,” Mayu replies. “I was forced by Kiriko... again.”

“Hey, hang on!” Kaz protests. “You're joking, right Mio?”

“Why not?” Mio replies. “If you won't do it, I'll step up to the plate for the sake of the party!”

“I suppose my willingness to make the sacrifice in the name of honour and tradition remains...” Mayu points out.

As Mio leans in to kiss Mayu on the cheek and Kazuma panics between the two of them, Kiriko busts a gut laughing. “Now this is a party!” she cries, falling back in laughter, even tripping up before being caught by some strong, steady hands.

“Careful, fly...” Roka growls. She looks up at him and he looks down at her, and the two blush as he helps her upright.

“So... merry Christmas, you big dumb ape,” Kiriko nervously chuckles. “I actually got you something.”

“I got you something too...” Roka mutters. “I mean, there's a gift on the table over there. You can take it if you want, I don't care.”

Kiriko makes her way over to the table, opening up the white gift box resting inside. “Is this...”

“Yeah, it's a stupid scarf, you got a problem with-”

“I love it,” Kiriko beams wide, as she pulls the silk scarf from the box. “A new scarf... thanks, Ape.”

“Oh... you're welcome, fly.”

Kiriko pauses. “Huh... I guess I won't see you until after winter break...”

“Yeah...” Roka scratches the back of his head. “I... I mean, good! Now I can finally get a good sleep, without you waking me up in the morning with your dumbass yelling!”

“Me?” Kiriko protests. “What about when you're doing your exercises? You think your grunting can't be heard a mile away?!”

The two continue to argue for a good while, before wishing each-other a Merry Christmas, and hugging.

“Ninsei, how are you my broth-”

“Shut up,” Ninsei cuts Sora off as he approaches. “Just because it's the holidays, don't think you can pawn off all your peace and love crap on me again.”

“I wasn't considering it,” Sora smiles. “I... simply wanted to give you your gift.”

“A gift?” Ninsei scoffs. “I figured you were beyond material possessions.”

“I do not ask that you grant me a gift,” Sora shakes his head. “I simply ask that you accept this.”

Ninsei raises his eyebrow. “Well, what is it?”

Sora hands out the gift for Ninsei. A small action figure, more than a little worn, featuring what appears to have been Red Mask, thought most of the paint on it has faded.

“Is this...?” Ninsei pauses, staring at the figure intently. “Sora, no.”

“Yes,” Sora nods. “I recall a time when we were children... we would always fight over that little figure. Well, I discovered it in a box in my closet the other day, and... I thought of you. The time we shared together. As brothers.”

A strong silence befalls the two brothers, before Sora speaks up once more. “Ninsei... I miss you.”

Ninsei sighs, staring at the figuring, running his fingers along it in amazment. “I miss you to, Sora... But I miss the real you. Not what you are now.”

Sora hangs his head low. “I understand, my brother... happy holidays.”

“Sora...” Ninsei mutters. “Thanks. This... it means a lot to me.”

Sora nods and smiles before walking on. Ninsei stares at the soldier proudly, caressing it before turning around... directly into a kiss from Tami.

“W-whoa, what the hell was that?!” Ninsei exclaims.

“Mistletoe,” Tami points above them. “Viscum Album-”

“I know what kind it is!” Ninsei replies. “Why'd y-you mack on my lips like that?!”

Tami shrugs. “Looked like you needed it. But it looks like you're mad instead.”

“I-I am mad!” Ninsei replies. “You can't just sneak up on people like that!”

Tami simply laughs at Ninsei's flustered reaction, as the party continues.

As Isamu and Rei embrace, Amaya shuffles awkwardly to the side, jilted and confused. “Well...” she mutters to herself. “That was a sudden and crushing rejection...”

“I know just the guy to help you out there,” Gado smirks as he approaches, tossing an arm over her shoulder. “His name's Gado, and he's more than willing to show you a good time instead.”

“We're not standing beneath mistletoe,” Amaya pouts.

Gado chuckles. “Who the hell cares about that?”

“Language!” Amaya scolds him. “You're in public!”

“Come on Blondie,” Gado smirks. “Let's go for a dance.”

Amaya shakes her head. “Flattered, but I think someone else would rather do that instead.”

Amaya points towards the tiny Kuin, who is tugging on Gado's pant leg. “Gado! I order you to dance with me!” she exclaims.

“Sure thing,” Gado replies, before pointing at Amaya. “But you're next up, okay?”

Amaya waves Gado off, as the bodyguard takes his dictator onto the dancefloor, allowing her to stand on his feet as they perform a small waltz.

“Okay Gado, it's time that you and I talked strategy!” Kuin exclaims.

Gado raises an eyebrow. “On what?”

“I've noticed your genius recruitment techniques!” Kuin beams proudly. “The power of seduction to add two new lovely subjects to my disposal.”

Gado chuckles to himself, waltzing away as Kuin continues. “But I don't think you're going to be able to recruit both!” Kuin explains. “The knight already has started to cool down on you now that you're with the detective...”

“And what do you think I should do?” Gado asks. “Any advice from a benevolent dictator?”

Kuin places a finger to her chin. “Well, it all depends on what my regime could use more; a new knight or a new tactician? Maybe we can work it out over this dance?”

“Or, we could both enjoy Christmas and not mention any of this,” Gado suggests. “If you drop this, I'll let you open two of your presents early.”

“...”

“A-ha, that worked, didn't it?” Gado smirks.

“You win this round, my loyal subject.”

“U-um... R-Reiji?” Hoshi mumbles, as she approaches her friend.

Reiji adjust his glasses. “Oh, Hoshi... I'm sorry again for how I acted earlier. It wasn't my place to... I was simply worried.”

“W-well... t-that's very sweet of you...” Hoshi replies. “And... and so I w-was wondering... would... would...”

“Yes?” Reiji replies. “It's okay, Hoshi. Go ahead and ask.”

“Are... are you doing anything for New Years?” Hoshi asks.

Reiji pauses. “Yes... I was planning to stay here and research some of the old Order texts...”

“Oh...” Hoshi mumbles. “Well... i-if you want to, y-you can come with me to meet my family on New Years...”

“I see,” Reiji sighs. “Hoshi, you needn't feel sorry for me. My parents never celebrated the New Year regardless. And besides, I wouldn't want to bother your family-”

“M-my father liked you when you first met,” Hoshi explains. “H-he wouldn't have a problem with seeing you again!”

Reiji shakes his head. “Well... I'll consider it. I can't promise I won't be too busy.”

“O-ok...” Hoshi mumbles. “I... I would like it i-if you came.”

“Really?” Reiji raises his eyebrow.

Hoshi nods. “O-of course... you're m-my friend... I-I want you to be with me... er, on New Years...”

“On New Years, of course,” Reiji nods.

“Y-you seemed pretty sad lately,” Hoshi adds. “And... I want t-to help you.”

“Hoshi... thank you,” Reiji replies, unable to do anything but smile.

“I-it's okay,” Hoshi smiles. “It's all... i-is that mistletoe?!”

“Not this again...”

Hoshi stares at the mistletoe, then at Reiji, then back at the mistletoe, prompting Reiji to sigh.

“You don't have to, Ryoji isn't going to force you into-”

“A-ah, h-h-here he comes!” Hoshi panics, pointing out Ryoji walking in their general direction from across the room. This prompts her to panic further, turning and running... right into Hanako from Class 1... who happens to be carrying a cake.

“Whoa!” Hanako cries as Hoshi topples her over, the two of them sliding across the floor and groaning in pain afterwards. “Oh, my butt...”

“M-my butt...” Hoshi whines as well.

As he helps her to her feet, Reiji can't help but laugh a little.

Akuro gives her older brother a swift jab in the arm before laughing nervously. “You still look pretty beat up.”

“I am,” Raiden replies, hanging onto the crutch that helps him move. “I should be in condition to fight again by the New Year.”

Akuro crosses her arms. “And you're really going to go into battle again? After what happened last time?”

“I have to...” Raiden replies. “I made a mistake. A huge one. I have a duty and responsibility to fix it.”

“You could just walk away,” Akuro replies. “Just start a new life... the chance is still there to-”

“A new life isn't my life,” Raiden fires back. “This is. My whole life I've been an outcast... but for better or worse, this is where I belong. The way I've been handling demons so far... it hasn't worked. I'm not going to achieve anything if I don't accept that... that this is a team. And I am a part of that team... and only by working together will I be able to seek vengeance for the one I lost... and protect the people I care about now.”

Akuro chuckles. “I mean, everyone loves the monkey around here, I don't think you need to protect her as much as you think-”

“I wasn't just talking about Akemi,” Raiden replies. “I meant you too. You're my sister, Akuro. I love you.”

“Oh...” Akuro mutters. “Well... I love you too, Raiden.”

The two siblings smile at each-other for a moment. Akuro turns to leave, but then turns back. “By the way... you still collect trains, right?”

“Excuse me?”

“Oh come on, don't play me!” Akuro laughs. “You love trains! You had a whole collection of model ones back at the orphanage! You still have them, right?”

“Why, Raiden Koi!” Isamu exclaims.

“Yoi,” Raiden corrects upon deaf ears. “Koi is a fish-”

“Is it true that you partake in the building of model locomotives?!” Isamu laughs. “What a charming pastime!”

“What are you talking about?” Chuichi asks Atasuke. “And is this one of your creepy moments when you're spying on someone and thinking indecent things about them?”

Atasuke points in the direction he's looking. “The handsomely mysterious Kaiya has been standing intently under the mistletoe for the last half hour. Could it be that she's awaiting the arrival of a handsome suitor?”

“Oh, so it's exactly the thing I just said,” Chuichi raises an eyebrow. “Well, why don't we just investigate?”

“Did someone say investigate?” Anri hurriedly rushed to the scene. “If you need, I'm sure that I can be of assistan-”

“Nope,” Gado mutters as he swoops in and begins to guide Anri away.

“No pointless investigations,” Gado replies, pulling her more away from the two guys. “I swear Brainiac, you're an addict.”

“I was going to solve the case of-”

“Nope. We're dancing instead.”

Atasuke chuckles. “Ohoho! How odd!”

Chuichi in return simply cracks his knuckles. “Okay, leave it to me! I'll figure out what the grim reaper's up to here!”

Chuichi leads the march towards Kaiya, with Atasuke following close behind.

“Hey, how's it going?” Chuichi replies, in a poor attempt at putting on a smooth voice. “You waiting for Mr. Right? Because I think I can be Mr. Right now-”

“No, stop, go away,” Kaiya rattles off with quick succession, despite sporting a huge smile on her face.

“Well, can you at least tell us what you're up to?” Chuichi replies. “Wait... do you even know what you're up to?”

“Yes. Waiting.”

“For what?”

“The inevitable,” Kaiya replies. “The cruel hand of fate stepping in, and the cold wind of death blowing from behind. Also, a cat.”

Atasuke places a finger to his chin. “A... cat?”

“Mistletoe is toxic to animals,” Kaiya replies.

“Wait... are you going to poison on of Nariko's cats?!” Chuichi exclaims. “Kaiya, you can't do that!”

Kaiya shakes her head. “No, I only planned to observe as it happened. To revel in the sweetness of death unfolding before my very-”

“And let me guess, you predicted this?” Chuichi asks.

“No,” Kaiya replies. “But an unobserved future may still be the future. Is it wrong to dream?”

Chuichi stares at Kaiya in confusion. “Maaaaybe you should take a step back from the whole death thing during the holidays. Do you dance?”

“Ballet...” Kaiya mutters.

“I'm sorry?”

“I do ballet.”

“Is... is this a joke?” Chuichi asks. “I really can't tell.”

“I'm not surprised you can't tell if something is funny or not,” Atasuke smirks.

“What's that supposed to mean?” Chuichi replies, as Atasuke simply laughs at him. Before he knows it, his hand is being taken by Kaiya and dragged to the dancefloor. Kaiya proceeds to outdance him for the next ten minutes. For all the things that can be said of this girl... she certainly isn't predictable.

“So, I guess this is goodbye again...”

The next morning, Kazuma and Mio stand by the school gates, the snow flakes falling down from above. The previous night both Mio and Alice forsake their own beds in order to cuddle up nice and warm with Kazuma. Of course, for Mio that likely had less to do with warmth and more to do with spending as much time as she could with her best friend. She had already said her goodbyes to everyone else, now it was Kazuma alone left to see her off.

“It's only a goodbye for now,” Kazuma reassures her. “It won't be that long, I promise.”

“And I promise to call you every day!” Mio smiles. “I want to know everything! Who's dating who, all the latest drama... and maybe if you can recognise a few market trends among the students...”

Kazuma chuckles. “I'll be sure to pass it all on, Mio.”

“You've really gotten used to calling me that, haven't you?” she smiles.

“It's your name,” Kazuma replies with a smile as well. “It's who you are, Mio... and I'm so glad that I know you.”

“You know me...” Mio mutters, her face lighting up with joy. She never truly considered that before. “I'm real glad we know each-other... oh darn it, I promised myself I wouldn't cry...”

“It's okay,” Kazuma replies, fighting back tears himself. “I'm truly going to miss you, Mio.”

Mio sniffles and nods, before slowly approaching Kazuma. She stands on her tip-toes and delivers a quick peck on the cheek. “You're the best friend a girl could ask for.”

“You're not so bad yourself,” Kazuma laughs. “Come back soon, okay?”

“Okay...” Mio grins. “I'll be back soon. And when I do, I'm taking you out for dinner every night for the next month! That's the Mio Tanaka guarantee!”

The two share a laugh, before Mio checks the time. “I guess I should get going... I love you, Kaz. Goodbye.”

“Love you too,” Kaz replies. “And never forget... this is your home. You're the merchant of Dark Gate.”

Mio smiles as she begins to walk off. “I'll never forget, Kaz. Never.”

As Mio walks off into the distance, Kazuma lets out a sigh. His shoes feel like they're filled with lead as he makes the long journey back to the school. Next stop... Kingudoro. Next visit... his mother.
