Welcome to Spirit Detective Quest! This quest, as the title suggests, takes place in the world of Yu Yu Hakusho, though it does not take place during the events of the show. You're a young highschooler, one who will find himself granted the title of Spirit Detective, and will be charged with tracking down demons and other supernatural criminals.

>Rules

Each time I make an update, there will be a ten minute window in which you can vote between various options I have provided. Write-ins are accepted and encouraged, but I do reserve the right to veto them. Once ten minutes have passed, the option (or suitable combination) with the most support will win.

You can choose multiple options, but be mindful of when that doesn't take any sense. Saying you want to go talk to someone and then talk to someone else in one post doesn't make much sense.

Also, in combat, I may veto selecting multiple options depending on how feasible that seems.

As far as combat, you will roll to attempt different options. I will not tell you what the number needed is ahead of time, so use your heads and balance risk/reward. Sometimes, you should take riskier options if they can yield greater payoff. Other times, it's best to play it safe. Use your judgement.

This is not Dragonball, and while there are sometimes ways to bring back the dead, they are few and far between, so do not assume that anybody you kill/let die will be coming back.

I hope you all have fun.

For the rest of homeroom, you sit at your desk and talk with Rachael. Well, more accurately, she does most of the talking, and you listen, occasionally asking a question or answering one of hers. She's one of those really outgoing people, it seems, leading her not only to try and talk to you as a new student, but also seemingly attempting to bring you out of your shell just a bit.

She tells you that she's involved in the school theater program, and asks if you've ever tried acting (no). She then proceeds to go into a five minute speech about how great it is, and how amazing it feels to put on shows.

Her cheeks turn a bit red. "Sorry, I was rambling. I do that sometimes. So, uh..what was your old school like?"

"It was alright," you answer, not really having anything else to say about your old school. It was just school to you, not worth thinking much about. "And I didn't mind your rambling. It's nice to hear someone talk about what they're passionate about."

Rachael gives you a look of surprise. "Really? Well, thanks. A lot of people get annoyed when I talk too much. Anyhow, it looks like homeroom's almost over. Maybe I'll see you in class later."

Saying goodbye, you leave homeroom, making your way to your first class and really beginning the day.

Classes are nothing to write home about. Most of your teachers don't make a big deal about you being a new student, since the school year is just beginning and virtually every student is new to them. Based on what they spend the entire period droning on about as far as curriculum, you're pretty sure you'll do just fine in this school as far as academics. And, at least some of the people here seem friendly. Rachael seemed like a nice girl, though that much social interaction is probably enough for one day.

Things go without incident until lunch. At that time, as you're making your way to the cafeteria you hear someone shout from behind you.

"Hey, you!"

You stop, unsure who's being addressed. When you turn around, however, and see three guys marching your way, every one of them looking at you, you figure it out.

The guy in the middle is pretty tall, with messy brown hair and blue eyes. You get bad vibes almost immediately. The look on his face, the two smirking boys walking beside him, the fact that other students are either stopping to watch or leaving as quickly as possible; you think you know where this situation is going.

"I haven't seen you around school before," the one in the middle comments as he marches over. "You must be new here, am I right?"

"Probably the only time this week, but yes," you tell the kid. "I'm William Haywood."

You hear a few of the gathered kids chuckle at this, while the three in front of you just smirk at each other, the one in the middle cracking his knuckles.

"My name's Kevin," he introduces. "And I'm sort of in charge around here. You're new, so you probably don't know that we got a rule in this place."

He holds out a hand, palm facing upward. "See, new students are expected to pay a little entry fee. It helps make sure their school year starts smoothly and they don't have any accidents, get it?"

The two other boys start to circle around you, probably in case you try to make a run for it.

>A. Ask if he's really stupid enough to try this in the middle of the hallway

>B. Tell him to beat it unless he wants to have an "accident" himself

Kevin steps forward, his fist flying toward your face. Out of instinct, you duck, stepping aside and extending one leg, causing your attacker to trip over and fall to the ground.

As he starts to fall, he holds out his hands, pushing against the ground and stopping his face from slamming into it. That's probably a good thing. A fight is one thing, but explaining to your teachers why another student has a broken nose is really not a conversation you'd care to have.

As Kevin starts to get back up, his goons come at you from either side, neither one of them giving much subtlety as they come rushing with their fists pulled back.

You get ready to trip Kevin up as he comes running toward you, but as you try to step to the side, he slams his shoulder into your face, causing you to stumble back, and letting him punch you square in the face, sending pain shooting through you as you fall back, sprawled on the ground.

Kevin stands over you, looking quite pissed. He glares down at you as he cracks his knuckles, raising his right leg and looking as if he's about to stomp on your face.

"What's going on over here?" a voice demands.

Kevin looks away from you, lowering his foot and taking a step back.

Hearing footsteps behind you, you pick yourself off of the ground and turn to get a look at whoever's coming.

He's clearly a member of the faculty, with black hair and green eyes, which are covered by glasses. He's dressed rather nicely, and has a look of great concern as his eyes shift between you and Kevin.

"Oh, uh, everything's fine, Mr. Stevenson," one of Kevin's goons insists.

"Then please explain to me why this young man was on the ground with Kevin standing over him," Mr. Stevenson instructs.

"I was just helpin' him up," Kevin insists.

Stevenson sighs. "Look, I don't think any of us care for all the bullshit that we'll have to deal with if we inform the principle about this. Is everyone okay?"

You answer with a shrug, which Stevenson seems to take as a "yes".

"Alright then, don't let me hear about you boys doing this again," the man warns. "Now get on to class, or lunch, or wherever you're going."

"Yes, sir," the punks say to him, each glaring at you when they turn to walk away.

The rest of the day passes without incident, and soon enough, classes end, meaning it's time for you to go home.

For some reason, you feel an urge to go talk to the kid. He seems to be heading in the same general direction that you are, anyway, so it works out just fine.

Leaving school, you catch up with him pretty quickly. He doesn't seem to notice your approach, nose still buried in his book. You can just barely make out what looks to be an illustration of a ghost or something when you come to his side.

You say hello, and the kid gives a jolt, the book flying from his hands as he yelps nervously, falling to his knees and covering himself with his arms. His body is trembling, and one eye slowly opens, turning up toward you.

"Hey....you're that new kid, right?" he asks, picking up his book and standing back up.

Damon's eyes light up. "Really? What kinds of things have you learned?"

The two of you start walking together, and the two of you discuss some of the things you've learned about spirits. Your knowledge on the subject is largely different from what he's read, leading him to question where you've heard these things. You play it off as having read a book, and he seems interested in reading it himself.

"Damon, get behind me," you instruct the other boy.

Nodding fearfully, Damon does as you tell him, putting himself behind you, and hopefully keeping himself out of the fight that you know is coming.

"Listen, you three need to walk away right now unless you want a beating," you warn the trio. "I won't hold back now that we're outside of school."

The three boys exchange looks, then burst into laughter.

"Oooh, I'm shakin', right guys?" Kevin asks his little yes-men.

"Yeah, maybe we should run away!" the boy to your right suggests through laughter.

"There's no way the three of us can deal with this guy!" the one to your left says in an overly-dramatic tone.

Kevin chuckles, looking toward you and cracking his knuckles as he slowly steps toward you.

"That jackass guidance councilor stopped me before I could really have some fun with you," he tells you with a smirk. "But he's not here to stop me now. Too bad."

You give Kevin no chance to so much as throw a punch, or even say another word. No longer afraid of teachers coming to stop you or discipline you in some way, you finally show your classmate what you're made of.

Having killed a demon, you expect this to be nothing but child's play, and you're absolutely right.

A punch to the stomach knocks the wind from Kevin's lungs, and the smirk from his face. His hands fly to the spot you hit, and he staggers back, groaning and grunting in pain. Before he can recover, or get too far away, you jump up and give him a nice kick to the face, knocking him to the ground, and, judging by the look on his face, into unconsciousness.

His two buddies look at him in total shock, terrified as they look toward you.

"K-Kevin?" the one to your right asks.

You reach into your pocket, retrieving a dollar bill, which you drop on top of Kevin before turning around and walking back over to Damon, who can't seem to decide whether to be impressed by your actions, or terrified by them.

He turns and walks with you, silent until he's certain that the two of you are out of earshot of Kevin's goons.

"What the hell was that?" he finally asks. "How did you do that?"

Shrugging, you give your answer. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."

Damon looks at you with a mixture of confusion and suspicion, but doesn't question you further. The two of you make small talk as you make your way toward your homes, splitting up just a few blocks from your house.

"See you tomorrow!" Damon waves, rushing off in another direction.

You make the rest of the journey alone, entering your home to the sweet smell of your mom's cooking. It smells like she's made chicken parm tonight, and your stomach rumbles in anticipation.

"Will?" you hear your mother call as you enter the house. "Is that you, dear?"

You call back to her, letting her know that it's you.

She steps into the living room, smiling. "How was your first day of school?"

"It was alright," you tell her.

Your mom seems happy to hear this, as "alright" is about the most positive you usually are about things. "Did anything exciting happen?"

"Well, I made some friends, and I got into a-" you start.

"Wait, you made some friends?!" your mom asks in joyous surprise.

"I think," you tell her.

She looks absolutely giddy, which you find a bit embarrassing. But, considering the fact that she and your dad have spent pretty much your whole life attempting to get you to socialize with people, you guess you can understand her happiness that you finally have.

"That's wonderful, dear!" she tells you, actually seeming teary-eyed with joy. "Oh, I'm sorry for interrupting. What were you saying?"

"I got into a fight," you tell her.

She frowns for a moment, walking over to you and looking for any injuries.

"Well, you don't look hurt," she tells you. "How serious was this fight?"

Just remember, there's a fine line between "it's what my character would do" and derailing key moments in a campaign because "muh consistency".

"What?!" your mom asks in disbelief and worry. "Will, what did you do?!"

Once you tell her that his friends took him home, and that the fight happened outside of school, she seems to calm down just a bit.

"Thank you for being smart enough not to do that in school," she tells you. "But this is serious. Hurting other students that badly, even when they start it, it can get you in a lot of trouble. Just, please don't do something like that again."

"Don't worry, I think he learned his lesson," you tell her. "I don't think he'll be messing with me again."

Your mom lets out a sigh. "Well, that's good, then. I'm not mad that you beat up someone who was trying to hurt you, I'm just worried about you getting into trouble at school for it. Just try to avoid these kinds of fights."

"How was your day?" you ask her now that she's calmed down a bit.

"It was fine," she tells you."I finished unpacking, did a bit of cleaning, made some dinner, and here you are. Your dad should be home shortly, then we can sit down to eat. Why don't you go get washed up?"

"Alright," you tell her, moving to get yourself washed up for dinner.

Before you leave the room, you pause at the door, looking back to your mother. "Thank you for being understanding."

She smiles. "That's what family does, dear."

Just as your mom said, your dad is soon home for dinner, and the three of you sit in the kitchen, enjoying mom's cooking.

"How was your day?" your mother asks your father.

"Well, first day of classes, so not much teaching, just reviewing my course's syllabus," he tells her. "But most of the students seem like they'll be fine, though I'm already worried about one or two."

He looks over at you. "Speaking of students, how was your first day of classes?"

"He made some friends today," your mom answers for you.

Your dad looks pleased, and more than a bit surprised.

"Really?" he asks. "Well that's unexpected, but definitely welcome. What are they like?"

"Two friends on your first day of school," your dad observes, sounding impressed. "I'm proud of you son, glad you're finally learning how to socialize."

The rest of dinner goes by peacefully, with both of your parents in high spirits. After a relatively pleasant evening, you finally head up to bed.

Once you close your eyes, they seem to open back up. You sit up in your bed, looking around and seeing someone standing just inside the door. Your eyes don't seem to have any trouble adjusting to the darkness, and you're able to tell that it's a young, red-haired woman with blue eyes dressed in green.

Aria.

I just read the end of earthbender quest.
I don't know what happened to your other spirit detective quest(s?) but do you think you can hold back on your faggotry a little bit this time and not just kill us with something dumb and end the quest then and there?
I stopped following dragonball quest too after you killed tofoo for trying to dodge through an attack that he'd already dodged once before.
I don't even think he had a low roll.

God you suck sometimes, and it kills me because if you could just quit doing that shit, your quests would be great.
I'm literally disappointed in you. It's always the same shit, you never learn and you could be doing so much better.
It's not like you don't have experience, i just don't get it.
>>
>>1212522
The ending of the First Spirit Detective thread was kinda obvious how it would happen, we just kept throwing ourselves at the feet of a Demon Lord and it got us in the end, though i have heard that the Avatar Quests ends tend to be Kings Quest levels of "Rocks Fall"

Plus Death doesn't actually matter in Dragonball, so that's kinda a non-issue
>>
>>1212356
The issue is that he's a bully. He's doing this to feel powerful, and we just wrecked that fantasy for him. He's either going to run and hide every time he sees us, or, if he's an unstable bully, he'll up his game and bring weapons, more guys, or some other equalizer.
>>
>>1212553
or if this were more interesting, he'd end up tempted by a demon and gifted with some magical item.
>>
>>1212522

>>1212561
Not a bad idea
>>
>>1212561
And then we beat the demon, free him of it's influence, and gain an ally who still has a fragment of demonic power. He'd be our Hiei.
>>
>>1212633
Really not a bad idea
>>
>>1212633
I was thinking more along the lines of we free him from the demonic influence, saving his life and leaving him spiritually aware. He then gains a sort of begrudging respect for us and becomes our kuwabara.

Either works.
>>
>>1212522
heres how it works anon.

the SOMNIUS has a hidden "fed up with your shit" variable that slowly counts towards 100. you can see clues to this when the SOMNIUS posts reaction images expressing frustration or other negative emotions.

At some point after a random value a given ROLL is actually a "fed up with your shit" ROLL. failing to exceed the current value results in death. success results in the value being reset, though experts disagree whether it is reset to 1 or 0.

loli has been proven to increase the FUWYS value more quickly. research is still ongoing.

The bedroom is dark, yet you can see perfectly. Sitting in your bed, you look across the room at the redhaired spirit, whose blue eyes are looking right back at you.

"Lord Koenma's expecting us," she tells you in that accent of hers. "If you're ready, I'll take you to him."

Aria is now standing off in the corner behind you into your left. When you look over at her, she moves her eyes toward the desk, and you turn your head to see Koenma leaning back in his chair, looking up at you.

The Prince of Spirit World folds his hands on his lap. "You've impressed me, Will. Not many humans are so quick to accept the reality of the Spirit World and demons as quickly as you were, and fewer still could have handled that situation with Suldon as well as you did. You reclaimed your body and took down a demon without so much as a scratch. Very impressive."

He takes his hands off his lap and floats from his chair, hovering over his desk and moving in front of you, floating at your eye-level.

"I'd like to offer you a job," he explains to you. "I believe Aria here has told you about our Spirit Detectives."

"Yes, sir," the girl says. "He also met Stephanie, if you recall."

Koenma takes a moment to think. "Yes, that's right. In any case, Will, you seem like you could make a fine detective. You'll be able to learn special powers, and get to use equipment that's very cool if I say so myself."

"Powers?" you ask.

"Surely you've noticed by now that your new awareness of your Spirit Energy has made you stronger than before," Koenma tells you. "With proper training, you can manipulate that energy through various techniques, and even increase its potency."

"Okay, but what about that equipment you mentioned?" you ask.

"We have various objects designed for our detectives," Koenma explains. "Each one is designed to help you in your work, and you will receive them as you grow in strength. Now, any more questions."

"Yeah," you tell him. "Do I get paid?"

Koenma falls out of the air and crashes to the ground, while Aria lets out a sigh.

"I'm giving you the chance to protect the planet and learn to use super powers, and you're worried about paychecks?!" he asks, flailing around on the ground like an infant.

I just want to be able to help out my family, and if I get paid, I can explain away my absences by saying I'm working. I'm sure someone as important as you shouldn't have any trouble with modest paychecks."

Koenma picks himself off the ground, dusting himself off and floating back into the air, hovering in front of you.

"Very well," he agrees, though he doesn't sound particularly enthused. "You'll be paid, IF you accept the job and perform it well."

"I accept," you tell him.

"Excellent," Koenma tells you, turning around and floating back over to his seat. "I'm going to be assigning Aria as your assistant. She'll give you your equipment, and help you get some basic training."

He sits down in his chair, and Aria comes to stand beside you, a smile on her face.

"I'll provide Aria with a human form," Koenma explains. "It's pretty standard in these situations. She'll be able to contact you in the living world very soon."

"You can count on me!" Aria says with confidence, though you aren't sure if she's addressing you or Koenma.

"Now, if there isn't anything else, I'll let you return to your dreams," Koenma tells you.

"No, that's all," you tell him.

"Very well then," Koenma responds. "I will bid you farewell. Pleasant dreams."

He snaps his fingers, and the darkness once again begins to close in on you, the office soon vanishing as you slip back into mere dreams.

The rest of the night is comprised of pleasant sleep, and nothing of note happens as you get up and get yourself ready for school the next morning. Your mother packs you a lunch today (a hoagie, some potato chips, and a soda), and sends you on your way.

Kevin and his pals don't give you any trouble on your way to school, and homeroom goes by rather quickly. Damon says hello when you arrive, but then goes back to his corner and resumes his reading, possibly due to the looks the two of you were getting when he came up to speak with you.

Once again, you're sitting next to Rachael, who asks you about your fight with Kevin in the hallway yesterday.

"That was really rotten," she tells you, looking angry. "He shouldn't be able to get away with pushing people around like that."

You give her a shrug. "Every school has its bully. But enough about that. How was your day yesterday?"

"Mine?" she asks. "Oh, it was great."

Something about the way she said that, you can't put your finger on it, but it sounded off.

Well, whatever.

"Attention, class," Mr. Owens calls from the front of the room. "We have another new student joining us today."

When you turn toward the front of the room, you do a double-take.

Standing beside Mr. Owens is a red-haired, blue eyed girl, dressed in a skirt and button-up blouse.

"This is Aria, and she'll be joining our homeroom class," Mr. Owens explains.

"Hello, everybody!" the girl greets with a wave and a smile.

You notice one or two students chuckling at her accent, while several of the guys seem to be checking her out. Most of the girls seem to be sizing her up, though she looks rather oblivious to that.

"Would you like to tell the class about yourself?" Mr. Owens asks her.

"Hmm...." Aria brings a finger to her chin. "Well, there's not too much to say. I'm just glad to be here."

"Alright then," Mr. Owens says with a yawn. "There's an empty seat next to Damon over there."

"Thanks," Aria says, staring over.

"So, it's good for finding evidence, then," you guess, twirling the spyglass through your fingers.

"Exactly," Aria tells you. "It goes by what you want to see. So if you want to look for objects hidden in pockets, for example, you just have to think about that, and that's how the spyglass will search. It takes Spirit Energy to use, so you should train with it when you can to build yerself up a bit."

You pocket the item, giving her a nod of understanding.

"I also wanted to tell ye that you've got yer first assignment," Aria whispers, leaning in a bit.

"Alright," she tells you, leaning back. "This can wait a few hours."

Remembering your promise to Rachael, you ask Aria about her singing.

The sky is blue during the day due to the diffraction of light from the sun through the atmosphere, that is, lots of light bouncing off the nitrogen and oxygen (which is blue)
You're not looking through any more air than normal, it's that space is being washed out by blue light, just like it's hard to see past a bright lamp in the dark, except that bright lamp is coming from everywhere.

It's just bright.

I think it should, but, it might cost a lot of spiritual energy.
>>
>>1214352
Makes sense.

So while we're noobs we can only see through clothes
but as we level up, we can see through walls, buildings, hills, the sky, and maybe the whole planet
>>

>>1214367
I just told you, it's not the air, it's the light.
Even if you look straight through the air, you're still going to see blue, unless it can selectively block light from our sun, but not other stars.

I think of it as a focus item. What i mean by this? While we can't control then make our energy be focused without wasting away our energy.

So i believe it can handle large amount of energy and the better we start to control our own energy we will, eventually, not need it anymore. Justlike Yusuke stopped using the ring to shoot the Leigan.

For the rest of lunch, you use it to peer through your own clothes, look through walls, and even through your own skin. Once all's said and done, you feel rather drowsy, and you doze off quite a bit in your remaining classes.

"Yep," you tell her.

"Good, then let's get goin'," Aria tells you, leading the way as the two of you walk away from the school.

"You know, people are going to start saying things if we keep spending all of our time together like this," you point out to Aria, who shrugs her shoulders.

"I didn't figured ye'd care what others have to say about ye," she comments. "But I can make sure not to spent so much time with ye in school if that'll make ye feel better."

"Speaking of feeling better, I think I used a lot of my energy learning how to use the spyglass," you tell Aria. "Any tips for quick recovery?"

"Rest's the only advice I can give," she tells you, slowing down a bit so that you can walk beside her. "For now, let's find a place to sit down so you can rest just a bit while I tell ye about the mission."

Finding a bench, the two of you sit next to each-other, and Aria starts rifling through her backpack, retrieving a folder labelled "Runo". She opens it up, and you're greeted by an image of some shirtless, gray-skinned beast with long hair, two horns, clawed hands, and glowing red eyes. He's thankfully partially clothed, but only in what looks like a loincloth. Looking at another image in the folder, you can see that this thing has a tail as well.

"This is Runo," Aria explains, glancing over at you. "Spirit World's been trackin' him fer months. His kind burrow into the minds of humans, possessin' them and usin' 'em to cause pain, misery, and fear."

"By himself?" Aria asks in turn. "Physically, not at all. And when he possesses a person, he gains their strength. So he'll probably only be as strong as a human when ye find him."

"Could he take over my body?" you ask.

"Not likely," Aria answers with a shake of her head. "Runo seeks the minds of hateful, sadistic, or cruel individuals, finding their base emotions easy to warp. Those with weaker minds make even easier targets fer him. But ye don't seem to match those qualities, and yer spiritual awareness makes ye harder to control."

"How do I get him out of a person?" you ask Aria.

"If you damage the person enough, or say, knock 'em out, he'll leave the body and try to find a new host," she explains. "The problem is that demons like Runo like to surround 'emselves with lackeys. They're smarter than most demons of their class; they place themselves as the heads of gangs, cults, terrorist organizations, even extremist activist groups. They can bring down entire cities with their actions, sometimes worse."

Okay, that sounds serious. So this Runo guy will be looking for somebody that's either a complete monster, or just full of hate. You know somebody who fits that bill.

Kevin.

You explain to Aria about Kevin and the run-ins that you had yesterday, positing that the school bully could be a potential target for Runo.

"Where should I start looking?" you ask.

"Your local news, probably," Aria answers. "Also , keep an eye on that Kevin boy if ye think he may have been possessed. I'll see what I can find, and report back to ye when I get the chance."

"Well, any more equipment that I could use?" you ask.

"Well, there is one thing, but it might not help ye right away," Aria tells you, reaching into her blouse and pulling out what looks like some kind of watch. "It's called the Demon Compass. It can track demonic energy, though it can be rather unreliable until it's been in close proximity to a demon you identify. Basically, if ye find Runo and he somehow gives ye the slip, the compass should be able to track him down no problem. But until ye find who Runo's possessing, it won't do ye too much good."

Putting the new item on your wrist, you look at her. "Koenma mentioned special powers. Anything that could help with this?"

Aria shoves the folder back into her backpack and stands up, turning toward you. "You're just learning the basics of controlling your Spirit Energy, but ye should be able to handle the most basic attack. Koenma came up with it himself."

She puts her backpack back on as you stand up, asking her what it's called.

"The Spirit Gun."
