You're Astanos, son of Koragos and heir to the heros Kodros who slew the cyclops Thantatos. As such you are to tend to the temple of Hades erected on the island that carries your ancestor's name and sacrifice there every month. (it is 2 weeks until sacrifice week)

A fortnight ago, on your way home from the city, Persephone came to you in a dream and told you that for your family to prosper, you must find favour with many gods to be blessed in the matters dearest to you, though to do this with caution as they are jealous and confrontational.

Once back at your homestead, you started construction on a shrine to Persephone (roll me a 1d100 for that, best of first 2) as well as ordered your new slaves to set up a new field (another 1d100 pls) and a vineyard and to start cutting trees for building material.

When you went out hunting last week, you slew a boar with golden tusks. You added its flesh to your stockpiles and hid the tusks in a chest in your room. They are bound to be worth a pretty penny.

When you came home, one of your newly acquired slaves was gone, having not returned from the woods. He seemed to have vanished, his axe still embedded in the oak he had been cutting down.

Mentes, your protege as opposed to Protage, which is the name of your wife speaks to you of voiceless whispers filling the air.

we need to go on a hunt of live animal to offer as sacrifice guys, let's try the snares again.

start the search in the woods where we found the boar, it's near where the slave got lost and we probably pissed someone off by taking that throphy.

Also, our sister-in-law should try to pray for Persefone, as her temple is near the place where the guy got lost so maybe she has some guidance for us.

as constructions go, I say the slaves need to start erecting a silo to store the harvest

You grab your snares and weapons and set out to bring back a trophy to please the Lord of the Underworld. You feel confident in your skill, and fancy your chances of finding something in the woods, (In the form of a d100), be it the lost slave or adequate game.

You talk with Protage, your sister in law not your wife as i foolishly said earlier and she reminds you that asking from the gods without giving something back is a sure path to deaf ears. (an apropriate sacrifice would go a long way)

While you're out, your slaves begin setting up foundations for grainstores. Where exactly do you command them to start digging?

we could give her some food, it's the first time we are talking with her and we just built her a temple, in addition to asking what she knows about the disappearance we could ask her what she prefers as sacrifice

The hunt goes badly. You set up snares in the luscious, more fruitful north of the forest where you also had found the boar, but not even tracks are found anywhere near. In general, the forest seems silent and empty. You stalk through the underbrush, and just as you fail to find tracks of game you neither find any tracks of your slave anywhere, apart from that lone axe in the tree - has bark grown along its blade?

Meanwhile your grain silo is beginning to undergo construction, emptying your building materials completely. It can likely be finished with the wood and clay still brought in by your slaves.

IT IS SACRIFICE WEEK - What do you wish to give your lord Hades?
>>
What do we have to offer?

your luxury goods include:

>stag fur (somewhat bad condition)

You could also sacrifice goats, food, money, or even just wood or blood, or anything you could think of.

Hades is looking upon you with much favour (as indicated by the vase in the bottom right), but dissatisfactory sacrifices might sour his temper. But as I said, your standing with him is quite good at the moment.

At dawn you and your sister in law walk to Persephone's altar. Protage clutches the dagger firmly in both hands. You cut open the palms of your hands, and let the blood dribble down on the bust of the goddess. It pearls down, leaving no mark on the white marble. The blood trickles to the floor in the midst of the pavillon.
Your wounds immediately heal up without a trace of the cut. You feel incredibly tired all of a sudden, as if you had been working tirelessly for days. Protage sags against you, and you support her, having to half carry her as you reach the house. She feels hot and has grown very pale, her breathing shallow. You see to it that she is being well taken care of. (It takes you an additionaly food this week) As she awakes she tells you of her slumber. She was afraid and angry. When she looked down she noticed hoofs where her feet should have been, but she didn't think anything of it, as if it was the most natural thing for her. In the distance she saw the roof of the temple. She tells you of a lust of wine and dance that she had in her dream. You know this to be a sign, an answer to your pleas for guidance. (Protage will consume 1 food this week)

>>1189039
You make your way up to the great temple at dusk and light the fire in the great stone brazier set up in its middle. You toss the fur into the air above the brazier and it catches fire, burning to ash long before it touches the flames. You say your prayers, your thanks and leave the temple with the moon shining brightly above you.
You ask, loudly:
>"Hades, king of the underworld, and master of my days - How may I please you? Shall a contest of strength amuse you?"
>"Send me a sign that I may know your will!"

Nothing happens. You walk home, seemingly ignored by your god and still weak from the sacrifice to Persephone.
But back in the stead, a curious sight meets you: A sleeping black bull lies there before your porch, surrounded by your slaves - they tell you that, believe it or not, they have dug the animal out of the ground at the building site, breathing and all.
A silver collar hangs around the animal.

I guess we send word of our planned festivities, so we can gather some actual contestents to fight in hades name.
Also leave the forest alone for now, for something tells me that he didn't run away and instead got turned into a tree or some shit for hitting on a holy oak dedicated to hera or something like that.

Also while we have him is it possible to breed the divine bull with our cow herd? I don't wish for a seccond Minotaurus, but I doubt Hades will mind as long as we sacrifce him on point and make the festival worthwhile
>>
>>1189150
where do you want the mud wall?

>>1189167
you do not have a cow herd, you only have goats. But you could theoretically breed the bull.

If you are going to hold a wrestling tournament like >>1189052 suggested, you can invite athletes from either
>Vedina
the city of fat merchants and penny-pinchers
or
>Lathos
the city of brash brutes and warriors.

The two are constantly at odds with each other and inviting both would be unwise.

Men from Lathos would be trouble in all likelyhood. They are devout Ares worshippers and as brash and violent as he is. But they would make excellent combatants, pleasing to Hades.

The men from Vedinan, although disgustingly slimy, would likely be amicable guests, maybe even bring gifts and trade goods (as even at festivals, these men indulge their greed).
But their athletes might be weak and a disgrace to Hades, who very well be displeased with their display.
>>
>>1189183
>but you could theoretically breed the bull.
wait what

well we better get some cows then, unless that breeding isn't just some crude joke

>Lathos
I guess we just have to cut back on the alkohol and instead serve more food, preferably the thick and heavy kind.

Your slaves finish construction of the storage building early afternoon, and, satisified with their work you let them rest for the day, which they enjoy by bathing at the nearby beach. You start moving your perishables and the grain into the new building. Please roll a d100.

You write up a letter and send Mentes on his way to Lathos. The boy seems chuffed to bits, for this is the first time you entrust him with a task all on his own.

The following morning you begin construction of the arena. You inspect several sites, and deem it unfeasible to build between the temples, for there is not enough space to build there. Instead you strike the earth opposite to the main building, on the other side of the road.

Protage seems to have regained her strength, although she still seems confused about the dream she had. With careful steps she inspects the newest field, which has also just begun to wield its firt harvest, increasing your food prdouction.
After she seemed sure to be strong enough to handle such trips, she went up to the future vinyard and discovered first sprouts there. If the weather plays along you'll be able to harvest the first grapes late summer.

>>1192390
I'm allowing this for now, but please wait with the rolling until you're asked for it in the future to avoid confusion with priority and such.

Roll me a d100 for this.

MEANWHILE, back at the temple, the construction on seats for the stadium has commenced, as your slaves drag stones from the mountainside down and arrange them into stands. You are using all the materials you have for this.

As you aren't there, it falls again to your wife to sacrifice, and you have elected to do so with the solid golden tusks of the boar you have recently killed.
As is custom, she conducts the ritual on the evening of the last day of sacrifice week - and for that I would like a 1d100 please.
>>

I didn't realise we didn't require a roll there, my bad.

As Protage throws the gold tusks into the fire, they simmer for longer than you're used to, throwing blisters and melting before being reduced to ashes, which keep a golden hue even in the midst of the fire, as if fighting consumption.
The subsequent night's sleep is disturbed by incessant bellowing.

>>1192390
The merchant, clearly still conflicted over the threat on his life from earlier, takes a step back and then reluctantly gives you an offer:

>"Let's not make any rash comments we might regret later. I am, after all, a business man, with immaculate reputation.
>"I will offer you my wares, as I would do to all with coin, but don't think for a second that you will get any of my famous discounts!"

Now here's your decision: Shopping here will likely be even more expensive than last time. But as this merchant is an official representative of the city, the product range is very large - luxury items, expensive types of food, cattle and seed as well as promised goods from further off can be bought here.

If you go down to the commoner's market, outside of the agora, you could probably expect fair prices without haggling, but only for poor folk's stuff.
>>

commoner's market
>>
>>1192445
this
>>
>>1192445
>>1192461
You make your way down to the marketplace. It is bustling with people and you soon retreat to the backroom of a merchant. He names you his prices.

Grain - 150

Food - 100

Slaves - 600

Goats - 350

you have 1250 drachma in gold and silver (now that you've sacrificed the tusks)

>What would you like to buy?

Also:
>What would you like to do at home the next week?
>>
>>1192480
>Grain
We still have time to look for wine or a cow?
>>
>>1192480
dam you OP

none of those things are of any value to us right now, at best we could buy some food.

I feel tricked -_-
>>
>>1192486
>>1192488
this is the limited product range of the commoner's market you've chosen. They don't have:

>luxury items, expensive types of food or cattle
as said here >>1192440. that was made pretty clear.

You could swallow your pride and try again in the Agora, but you threatening to kill the merchant designated to you by the council had predictable consequences.
>>
>>1192492
great now he knows we don't have another choice.
Is there a temple of Hermes? Because we could really use his help right now.
>>
>>1192492

Next we were need to find the we have to talk to that satyr
>>
>>1192502
I don't care for the cost not really
we really need a cow, it is an almost garantued self payed infestment.
>>
>>1192500
there is one here, you could try and give him a sacrifice.

But be warned, you have no report with the god, so there's a good chance for it to just be a sacrifice and prayer, with the god paying little heed to you. You have erected no statue to him nor done any deed in his honour, he likely doesn't know of your existence other than as a soul to be brought to the river Styx one day.

But the right sacrifice and the right rolls could overcome that hurdle.
>>
>>1192506
We need to talk again, if we need the risk then lest go
>>
>>1192509
I don't think this will work, we don't even know what he likes
>>
>>1192509
I think we should consider shenanigans with hermes later.

>>1192480
One more goat and one more slave, we got the third field going so feeding the slave wont be an issue. Get the goat for a sacrifice. Mhm
>>
>>1192509
while I am usually one for gambling it's not worth the risk in this case. Maybe if we show the god world what a potent follower we are they might eventually catch on and demand from us that we worship them.

Anyway lets go back swallow our pride and try to buy a cow, if we can get an offspring from the black bull it will be a worthwile investment
>>
I'm not sure what Nathol wants
>>1192502
>>1192514
you'd be the deciding vote it seems.

At this point, if anything gets two votes, it gets locked in.

You still need to decide what to have your slaves do at home for the next week as well.
>>
>>1192534
A change of options a lot, sorry
Let's talk again with the rich merchant
>>
>>1192543
this

for building I already suggested
>>1189697

We should use the time to build seating opportunities out of stone for the more important guests, so they don't have to sit with the pleb.

>>
>>1192543
>>1192526

You make your way up to the agora again, your tunic bearing stains of mud from mingling with the rabble now.

The merchant grins as you enter his shop again.

I think you wanted a cow, which would be 800 drachma. Otherwise the prices are (all of them clearly horrendously inflated):

Cow 800
Food 250
Goats 500
Grain 300
Grapes 400
Horse 1800
House 4000
Olive Oil 500
Slaves 900
Marble 500

>>1192554
that stuff has already been started to be built, the week after, which was this one. Next week it will be finished, but you can still have the slaves do other things if you want to.
>>
>>1192559

The slaves could make decorations we can use to decorate the whole thing. Probably something that pays homage to Persephone,
in a way that says, look at me I am not just the greatest god, I also have the greatest wife kind of way.
>>
>>1192564
This
>>
>>1192585
This could also work, I think more and better seating spaces would be better.
>>
>>1192559
can we haggle the cow?

>>1192596
True they would be, but I am not sure how we are supposed to build them without wood ...
and i doubt our slaves can build us a colosseum.

You thank the merchant, displaying a serene mask and even managing a smile, leaving him with a fat purse of Drachma. He must have expected some outburst again.

You pack up your things hastily and leave Vedina, for you want to arrive before the end of the week, thinking about Mentes, who should have returned by the time you get back.

The Stands are finished, and are looking pretty impressive. Your Slaves, clearly eager to catch a glimpse of the games themselves and intending to impress you, have used the ample amount of time fully and create a fine seating area.

The slaves not taking part in the building process divide their time between plucking flowers which have sprouted around the shrine to Persephone after your last sacrifice and fashioning wreaths of them, and hauling some more stones from the mountain into your stockpiles.

You arrive at your homestand. Glad to be away from the city. The enthusiasm with which you are shown the new arena, the blossoming flowers from persephone are almost enough to make you forget how much lighter your purse is.

Among those greeting you is Mentes, who, grinning proudly, exclaims that the Lathosians have graciously accepted your invitation and are, unsurprisingly, eager to compete. They will arrive within a fortnight.

You draw a pen around the third field using stones from the surrounding area.

You leave the bull alone with your newly bought cow, and their bellowing the following day gives you an idea of what they're doing.

Then, one early dawn you put on your armour, take Mentes by your side and make your way down south again, to the meadow where you found your goats and where you know the Satyr to like to sit and play his lyre. (cont.)

You arrive at the meadow and see the goatman plucking his lyre and singing to himself in the rays of the morning sun.

>"I have lost a slave"
you say to him, your helmet in hand, with some distance between you.
>"He vanished in the forest. I have asked onto the gods for a sign, and they have pointed me to you. Tell me, satyr, are you holding my property?"

The satyr laughs his goatish laugh.

>"I have told you before and I tell you again: No one's master am I, and no one is my master. I am free, what am I to do with a slave to shackle me?"
>"But if truly the gods have brought you to me, and truly it is you Astonos, slayer of the gold toothed boar, then I know who has it."
His expression, formerly distorted in a gleeful grimace becomes softer and almost melancholic
>"My love, the most beautiful of all. Ekleria, the nymph of the forest and the lake. To her, her mother, Demeter, the boar was given as a gift. Oh the gold shines not so bright as does her beauty..."

Not content with reminiscing about the nymph, the satyr breaks into song, a sorrowful ballad of forbidden love.
>>
>>1192754
alright, the question is now

>What will you do next week?

It is two weeks until the tournament, which will fall on sacrifice week - a convinient state of affairs, seeing as you already know what to sacrifice on that day.

True, although that would be eternally shitting on Demeter, which would likely cause significant harvest troubles.

nymphs are lesser divine beeings. I doubt that we can do anything agaisnt them without the help of a god

Can we still engage in the ancient art of sodomy with the Satyr in hopes of recieving his help when dealing with Demeter?
