/qst/ - Quests

>This is a quest taking place in the Fullmetal Alchemist setting, beginning at roughly the same time as the original story. However, some parts of the setting have been slightly altered. You will be playing as a Iskander Steiner, a young alchemist, who will develop based on the choices made by the players. Remember that write-ins are always welcome, and to have fun.

During the wait for spring, you focus mainly on your studies. In particular, becoming skilled enough at alkahestry to use it in combat. If Father shuts down alchemy again, it will be your trump card.

However, in order to keep from working yourself too hard before even starting the operation, you do make sure to take some time to relax while you can. You and Leah even take a day just to head out to Yock Island and reminisce.

"When I was a kid, my father took me out here to teach me how to survive in the wilderness. Just like your teacher, I suppose." Leah explains. "He was always with me though, rather than leaving me on my own. My mother died when I was too young to remember her, and he had to take care of me by himself. He was always glued to me, never letting me leave his sight. So when he suddenly died in an accident, I had no idea what to do. I didn't have any other family, I had nowhere to go. So I just came out here on a whim. And that's when I met you. You just seemed so helpless, and I had the means to do something about it. It was like I had found my purpose. I had no idea what that would end up leading to, but I still don't regret any of it. I'm just a normal person, not even an alchemist. I'm in way over my head with these high ranking military officers and homunculi, but I'm going to do whatever I can to keep looking after you no matter what."

The two of you renew your determination, as the day of the eclipse draws ever nearer. With it just two days away, you find your teacher knocking at the door for a visit.

"We're heading to Central." Izumi tells you. "I want to talk to Tucker before everything goes down. Not to mention, we've got soldiers practically banging down our door now. It's only a matter of time until they try to drag us there. You two should be careful as well."

Rather than wait any longer, you decide that now is as good a time as ever to head to Central. And it can't hurt to go along with your teacher. You sign as much to Leah, and she tells Izumi the same.

"Alright then. Let's get a move on. If we leave now, that should give us all day tomorrow to do anything we have to before the operation." your teacher directs you. "And one more thing. It may feel to you like we're three steps ahead, but don't let yourself get complacent. Hohenheim has prepared well, but something could still happen that throws us off. We just need to focus on our job. Let Father think he's won, then pull the rug out from under him. We need to give it our all to make sure that happens. So be ready for anything. Aside from that though, try to stay in good spirits on the way there. Don't want to upset Nina, after all."

You and Leah get your things together, then meet up with Izumi, Sig, Nina, and Alexander at the train station. You all catch a train north to Central. You over hear some guys talking while you're on the train.

"Aerugo is pushing up even further from the south. We're gonna have a ton of people fleeing north any minute." the man says to his friend. "I gotta wonder what they're doing down there to let this happen."

"I heard Drachma and Creta have launched full-scale offenses too." his pal replies. "We're beset on all sides. Well, almost. Luckily that conflict with Ishval didn't last, they backed off. Still, I don't know how the hell Amestris is going to make it through this one."

The news is concerning. Not only is it more fuel for Father's circle, it'll be tough to resolve even if you're victorious. But you can't worry about that now.

It's the day before the eclipse, and you all arrive at Central.

"Nina, you go with uncle Sig and Alexander, okay?" Izumi asks the girl. "I've got to take care of something."

Sig leads the girl and dog off, and your teacher turns to you.

"I'm headed to see Tucker." she tells you. "I'd like it if he could see his daughter today, before everything happens."

You consider perhaps going along with her, but decide against it. You'd rather keep from potentially drawing more attention that way. Instead, you sign to Leah to tell your teacher good luck, and she does so. You see Izumi respond with a smile.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUF7jOM8Mp8&index=8&

"I doubt you'll hear me say this again, but thank you for being my student, Isk." she tells you. Her words are completely sincere, and you're a bit taken back to hear them. "If I hadn't spent all those years teaching you, I'm sure I would have refused Nina and her father at the door. I wasn't able to have my own child, so the thought would have been too painful. But you were able to bridge that gap for me. You were just some random kid from the street, with nothing to your name but a drive to learn as much as you could. You're well aware just how vehemently I refused to teach you. But you didn't give up. And it's only because of that I was able to move on. I started to open my heart again. And now that Nina's here... I'm not her mother, but I'd like to believe I care about her like one. And that's something I never thought I'd have. Even if it's only temporary, it means the world to me. And it's only because of you that I was able to experience this."

Izumi starts to walk off, and turns to face you one more time, waving at you and Leah.

"I care about you too, of course." she insists. "So I want to see you happy and healthy after tomorrow is over. But I'm sure I can count on you for that, right Leah? You've always been there to clean up after him."

"I'll be sure to take care of everything, Mrs. Curtis." Leah replies. "See you tomorrow."

With that, your teacher walks off. You and Leah take a minute to sit, and you try to feel around. After practicing with alkahestry, you can feel chi a bit, like Yi described. Not very well, but well enough to feel uneasy. The entire city just feels wrong somehow. You can get and idea of how Yi was feeling here.

"So where should we go?" Leah asks. "Should we see someone before tomorrow?"

You start thinking about where to go, and your teacher and her destination cross your mind. For some reason, you get the feeling that you should actually go after her after all. You get up and sign as much to Leah.

"I guess we can." she replies. "No harm in it aside from a bit of awkwardness from reuniting sooner than expected."

The two of you make your way through some familiar back alleys, making sure not to catch any attention. You eventually reach the warehouse, after taking one of the hidden routes they indicated to you last time you were here to stay inconspicuous. When you're let inside, you see all the chimeras gearing up for tomorrow.

"The day is finally here." Roa says. "We'll get back at those generals up on their high horses, and save our country at the same time. And after that, we'll get to go back to being human again! I've never been so excited in my life."

The two of you make your way to the back room, where you find Izumi and Tucker. Yi doesn't seem to be around right now.

"Isk?" your teacher asks. "I didn't think you were coming. This is a bit of a surprise. Well, Tucker here still refuses to see his daughter. No matter how much I insist."

"As much as I'd love to see her again, I can't." Tucker says. "I don't deserve it. I'm sorry I just loaded her off onto you, but it really is for the best. She'll eventually forget about me."

"You 'don't deserve it', you say?" Izumi narrows her eyes at the man. "Nina has told me all about her life, and I've developed my suspicions. About what really happened to your wife. Might that be what you're referencing, Tucker?"

Tucker looks up from his clasped hands, the glare on his glasses obscuring his eyes.

"What you likely suspect is true." Tucker replies. "Nearly three years ago, my research was making no progress, and I used my own wife as material in order to make a chimera that would get me the State Alchemist certification. She died because of me. And I lied about her leaving me. It was truly an evil thing to do. I don't know what I would have been driven to if I had kept on that way. But those two told me the truth, about the human chimeras the military had created and kept secret. I realized that I had not only done something horrible, but that it was completely pointless. Those bastards in the military played me for a fool. It's no excuse for what I did, but the very least I can do is make them pay. As for Nina, she doesn't need someone like me for a father. You and your husband can make her much happier."

You're shocked to hear this truth. Looking to your teacher, you can see her gritting her teeth and clenching her fists. You're actually surprised that she isn't already beating Tucker senseless, so something must be keeping her holding herself back.

Your teacher doesn't seem like she's about to voice any objections quite yet, so you sign to Leah and have her ask a question for you.

"Then Tucker, what do you plan to do after tomorrow?" she asks. "Once you've 'made them pay'?"

"I honestly couldn't care less." Tucker sighs. "After that, I don't care what happens to me. As long as Nina is in good hands, I won't have anything left to worry about. I suppose there is still the matter of returning all the chimera to normal. I did promise them that much. So if I make it past tomorrow, I guess I'll still have one obligation left."

Tucker looks at Izumi.

"You're angry, understandably." he tells her. "But you know I'm not wrong. I have no business getting involved with my daughter again after what I've done. As little as it may be worth, you truly do have my gratitude for taking care of her."

Your teacher turns around and storms out without saying another word.

"Sorry for deceiving you all this time, Iskander." Tucker tells you. "It's not much consolation, but I really am thankful that you came by that day to tell me the truth. I can at least make up for a bit this way."

You're about to head out after your teacher, but you stop briefly. You make some signs to Leah, giving her a message to relay to Tucker for you.

"Tucker, you may have done a horrible thing, but you're still Nina's father." she tells him. "She's really worried about you. At least once this is over, you should try to see her."

Tucker is silent for a while, before turning away in his chair.

"We'll see." he mutters.

The two of you then head out of the warehouse after Izumi, catching up to her just as you make your way out of a series of back alleyways.

"Are you doing alright, Mrs. Curtis?" Leah asks. "It's not like you to storm off like that without a word."

"I really wanted Nina to be able to see her father again. It would have made her so happy." your teacher sighs. "I was hoping so hard that it wasn't true, but I knew that was pointless. I pieced it together a while ago, but Nina would always smile when she talked about seeing her father again. And now I can't even find it in me to chew the bastard out. He killed his own wife, took Nina's mother from her... But he doesn't have any delusions. There wasn't anything left for me to say. I suppose there's no helping it. You do disagree with your teacher here. If you were in Nina's position and still had a living parent, you'd want to be able to see them. You have Leah tell her that, as well as ask if she's really intending to take care of Nina from now on.

"I'm still not so sure." Izumi sighs. "But maybe after tomorrow I'll have some different thoughts on the matter. Tomorrow could change a lot of things. But yes, I want to take care of her. It might be presumptuous of me, but she needs someone to care for her. Sig and I can at least try to give her a normal family. I'm going to do everything I can. Anyway, I'm going to cool off for a bit, then meet with her and Sig. I'll see you two later."

It's a bit more bitter of a parting than your earlier one, but you wave farewell to each other nonetheless. Afterwards, Leah asks where the two of you should head, and you suggest Hughes' place. Out of the superiors you know, he's likely to be the one with the least eyes on him.

You eventually arrive at the Hughes residence, and knock on the door. The man himself answers it.

"Iskander and Leah, good to see you!" he greets, directing the two of you to enter. "You're welcome to come right on in, my wife is about to cook dinner, and we always love company!"

You both come in and take a seat, and join Hughes in watching his daughter play.

"So I take it you guys are ready for tomorrow?" he asks. "Feel free to spend the night here before you take off in the morning. A good night's rest will do you wonders, you know."

Hughes is welcoming the two of you with open arms, and you see no reason to refuse. You and Leah both graciously accept the offer. You then have Leah ask how the preparations are going on his end.

"Everyone is ready to move first thing in the morning." he assures you. "That includes me. In fact, some of us will start moving tonight before the sun is up. Don't you worry about that though, you've got your own role. And it may be harder than any of ours. so get all the rest you need."

The both of you join the Hughes family for a wonderful dinner, and a helping of Mrs. Hughes delicious apple pie, as well. When Leah asks how to make it, she laughs, adding that Winry had the same reaction when she tried it. Seems it's somewhat famous.

Given how early you all plan on heading out, you don't stay up too late. As soon as the sun is up, you intend to head out. Despite getting to bed early, it takes quite a bit of time to actually fall asleep. You're pretty anxious. It's understandable, given what's at stake. But you reassure yourself. You and everyone else has prepared for this. You will all do your parts, and save Amestris and its people.

Though it takes some time, you eventually fall asleep, and sleep soundly through the night. Before you know it, you're woken up by rays of light through the window.

The sun rises on the Promised Day.

You and Leah get up and get ready to head out, eating a light breakfast at Hughes' wife Gracia's insistence. It's still fairly early however, and his daughter Elicia is still asleep. Hughes finishes preparations of his own, and turns to his wife.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_scbziJUEog&index=60&

"Gracia, I need you and Elicia to stay inside today." he urges. "Don't leave this house no matter what, alright?"

"Alright." she nods. "You stay safe too, okay?"

"I will." Hughes smiles, before turning to you and Leah. "Mustang has probably already started his part of the operation. I'll be heading out to join him. You guys on the other hand, have a quite a bit of time before the eclipse. You've got a bit of leeway to get into your position, so you can stand not to rush it. So take your time and be careful. We'll be counting on you when it comes down to the wire. We'll all be counting on you. I mean it. So good luck."

Hughes says one last goodbye to his wife and heads out, then you and Leah follow suit.

"So Father probably wants you and the others at the very center of the circle." Leah muses. "Which means you've all got to get underground to that chamber we were at before. We could take the underground path like before. I guess there's also that elevator you and the Elrics took, but that's much less feasible. Should we head off right now, or try to find someone else to go with?"

You decide to find your teacher and go along with her. There is after all, little reason to believe she'd know where to go on her own. Unfortunately, you don't really know where they're staying, so it takes a bit of time before you're able to track them down. As you're searching, you see some smoke in the distance. It seems fighting has already started somewhere. It's not long after that you hear a siren. Central's forces are sure to fully mobilize, which was part of the plan. As long as Mustang and the others can handle it, that should make it smooth sailing for your group. Hopefully.

You eventually manage to track down the inn the Curtis family is staying at, and find Izumi ready and waiting.

"Sorry, I had a bit of a lapse yesterday." your teacher apologizes. "Thinking I was going to be doing everything on my own wasn't the wisest thing I've done. I'm glad you were able to come get me. Let's go together."

Before leaving, Izumi turns to her husband and Nina.

"Nina, I've got to take care of something today, alright?" she explains. "You stay here and be good, okay?"

"Okay." Nina replies, looking a bit worried. "Be careful. I heard the siren."

Your teacher just nods and gives one last smile before heading out with the two of you.

You and Leah lead her to the entrance to the underground tunnels, but stop short before you get there. Hiding behind a fence, the three of you look on a huge crowd of soldiers, all on the alert.

"There's at least a platoon's worth of soldiers here." Leah notes. "We definitely aren't slipping past them, and I don't think we alone are enough to fight past them. Should we go for backup?"

You put the thought of fighting past these guys out of your mind. Mustang and the others are already intending on carving a path into command, so you just have to follow along behind them. Not to mention, if you do that, there's no need to wander through the tunnels aimlessly. You let Leah know your thoughts, and she tells Izumi.

"I suppose that's fine, then." your teacher replies. "We might be able to even do our part to help on the way. As long as we stay careful, of course."

The three of you head closer towards Central Command, while staying alert. You make sure to duck away in order to avoid a couple squads of soldiers as they pass, then watch as they all get taken out trying to round a corner. You see one get his skull crushed and torn to pieces by some sort of huge clamp-like appendage with a saw blade inside it. It's absolutely brutal.

You see a familiar face emerge, that of Captain Buccaneer, of General Armstrong's Northern Command.

"Bring the tank around!" he shouts. "We're closing in on the main gate!"

You're quite surprised to hear they managed to get a tank in here. You're thinking about whether or not to reveal yourselves, when you hear a shriek from a bit farther back. This didn't seem like a soldier taken out by the Northern force though, it gave you the impression of a civilian. Are people getting caught in the crossfire?

You're worried about any innocents getting caught up in all this business. That should be avoided at all costs. With Leah and Izumi in tow, you make your way back through some streets to where you heard the sound. You pass by what seems like the entire northern force and keep going, so it seems they weren't involved, as soon you hear another scream. Just what's the cause, then?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxPN_4kCerc&index=72&

The three of you emerge onto a wide street, where you see people running in fear. Behind them stumble strange white creatures, shambling in a group. There are dozens of them, and that's only what you can see. They seem to keep coming.

"What..." Leah stutters. "What are these things?"

Though they look somewhat like humans, they have only a single eye on their foreheads, and their mouths hang open with what seems to be a singular desire to eat. One lunges mouth first at a woman, but is caught and thrown aside by a man you recognize, Roa. The woman is startled at his appearance, but not as much as she was at the white monsters.

"Don't be alarmed, Ma'am." Roa insists. "We're here to help."

You see all the other chimera emerge and start taking on the monsters, giving the citizens time to flee to safety. You see Tucker, as he transmutes one of the things into tiny chunks of flesh that go flying.

"Don't bother beating on them!" he shouts. "You have to take them apart! Separate their limbs or heads from their bodies, and they'll be helpless!"

"You got it, Doc!" Roa replies, as he rips an arm off one of the creatures. The other chimera follow suit.

You're concerned about these things, but moreso that they don't seem to be letting up. Just where are they coming from? You decide to find out, and sign as much to Leah, who tells your teacher.

"Good idea." she nods. "The chimeras can handle these guys somewhat, but we need to keep the situation from getting any worse. Let's get to the source and stop it."

The three of you head in the direction the monsters are coming, making sure to take a few of them out on your way. As Tucker said, beating on them is pointless, and guns are worthless, so Leah doesn't bother. you and your teacher find that crushing them is a good way to handle them, however. You both make sure to take out a few dozen on your way.

You eventually reach a building. A plaque marks it as the Third Laboratory. You see some bloodstains on the ground along with some weapons and remains of military uniforms. It seems this place was once under guard, but not anymore. You can see more and more of the creatures continuing to stumble out of the lab.

"We don't know if all the ones that got out headed the same way." Izumi grits her teeth. "For all we know, some of them could have gone another way and be on the loose."

"But can we afford to take the time to search for them?" Leah asks. "Look, they're not stopping. We need to take them out at the source. That lab needs to be cleared out."

"Then we'll have to split up. We can't let either of those things happen." your teacher insists. "I'll make sure there aren't any stragglers. You guys take care of things here."

Izumi leaves to check the surroundings, while you head into the laboratory, smashing the creatures as you advance. Leah hangs back, very clearly upset that she can't help against these things.

You clear out the hallways, checking in each room for more of the things, until you come to a darkened hallway that seems to be the source of the creatures. The trail of destruction extends form here. Heading further in, you eventually come to a wide open room, with a huge stone door at the other end that's been swung open. More and more of the things keep pouring out from within, and you're starting to get a bit weary fighting them alone.

>A.That door might just lead underground where you need to go, no need to get into command. Get your teacher over here and bust through

You focus on the door. Your ability to sense it is still faint, but you feel like the chi is coming from beyond it. It likely leads down into the underground like you intended to go. Who knows how long it might take the soldiers to break into command, so this could be your ticket. You and Leah rush to head back outside, while the creatures are still stumbling around inside the lab. You'd like to get back with your teacher before any more get out on the street.

You both head the way Izumi went, and search for her. you see a couple of remains of the creatures here and there, but not many. You guess most of them must have gone the same way, and are being taken care of by the chimeras. You eventually reach a street where you find your teacher, who has just crushed another one of the things.

"So that's all of them you saw come this way?" she asks a man, who nods. "You're sure? Alright. you should stay inside anyway."

From a nearby balcony, you hear a voice over a radio.

"So Mrs. Bradley, you're saying the soldiers opened fire on you? That they received orders to kill you?"

"That's right." another voice replies, presumably Mrs' Bradley. "They tried to shoot me, Mustang, and his men."

"The Fuhrer is still away for a visit in the East." the announcer goes on. "It seems that perhaps one of the senior officers has taken this opportunity to stage a coup d'etat."

He goes on to further expand on the theory, talking to leave little doubt for the average listener. It seems Mustang came up with a damn good way to stay on the side of the "good guys", even if it means taking responsibility off of the Fuhrer as well. Things just might work out for him at this rate.

You and Leah explain to your teacher that you've found a path to the underground, and that's where the creatures seem to originate from.

"Then I guess we're headed down there." Izumi responds. "I'm a bit concerned about the others, though. The Elric brothers, and their father. We haven't heard a word about them, and I doubt they'll know about this place. How do we expect them to reach the underground?"

>A.I'm sure they can find a way past those guards at the usual entrance

You agree that you'd hate to leave them in the dark. You think about figuring out some way to leave a message, or a code, but there's no way you can think of to guarantee they'd even see it. If only you just knew where they were. But you don't have any way of finding that out.

Or so you think. As you're in deep concentration, you feel something odd. You realize that you're sensing chi. A chi that seems to be entering the city. But you're not skilled enough to sense any individual's chi. Only that of a huge mass, like Father's below the city. It's then that you realize what you're sensing. The only mass of chi that compares to Father. You sign to Leah and take off in the direction you sensed. Leah follows, and so does your teacher, albeit confused.

"What's going on?" she asks. "Where are we going? Weren't we going to head underground using the laboratory?"

"Isk sensed Hohenheim." Leah explains. "He's arriving at Central. No need to leave a message, we'll tell him ourselves."

Making sure to avoid any fighting that might slow you down, the three of you eventually pull up on the man himself. Unfortunately his sons aren't with him, but Yi is.

"Well, well, well. It's a good thing I ran into you." Hohenheim says. "I was honestly wondering how I was going to get down there. You told me about a path down underground, but I was having trouble finding it."

You're about to lead Hohenheim to the laboratory, but a thought crosses your mind. With Hohenhiem's help, breaking into command would be a cinch. There's nothing that can feasibly stop him, and you'd be free to take the elevator right down. You decide to go with that plan, and start heading that way. You do decide to swing in the direction of the lab briefly, and see that the chimera seem to have the situation covered.

With that out of the way, you sign a question that's on your mind to Leah for her to ask Hohenheim.

"Hohenheim, where are the brothers?" she inquires. "They were going to be here, right?"

"Oh they'll be here, alright." he assures. "They've just been held up a bit longer doing something very important. Something that might just end up saving our skins. Anyway, they should be coming along right behind me. My only concern is if they'll be able to get underground to the right spot, too."

"They will." Leah replies. "We'll be clearing a path for them."

Your group approaches the main gate, where the northern force's tank is firing away in the direction of the command post. You see Buccaneer and General Armstrong nearby, and approach.

"You again? The Silent Alchemist?" she asks. "What are you doing here?"

You sign your idea to Leah, who does the speaking for you.

"You seem to be struggling a bit to get into Central Command." she starts, ignoring the glare it gets her. "We've got some alchemists her that can open an easy path for you. This one in particular."

Leah points to Hohenheim, who waves at the general.

"We were stalling, using the tank as a distraction until Alex was able to get us a way in from the inside, but he's taking too long." Olivier explains. "Therefore, I'll graciously take you up on your offer. Please make us a way inside."

At the general's request, you, Izumi, and Hohenheim get to work. Hohenheim could probably have done the whole thing himself, but he's not very familiar with the layout of command. Letting him figure it out by himself might take too much time. Instead, the three of you all get to it, making a tunnel below the gate that will lead you inside, close to the command post. The most important factor of this being that you stay unnoticed, of course. The tank is still on the outside firing away, but you can't end up coming out where you might get noticed. You need to retain the element of surprise the entire time.

It takes a few minutes, but the three of you manage to make a workable tunnel below the gate, and open it up in a slightly obscured corner of the courtyard near the command post, where it's harder to see from far away. Olivier sends Buccaneer and a platoon of troops through, ready to seize the post itself.

"Thanks for your help. Things should go much smoother now. I should have known I couldn't count on Alex, the big buffoon." Armstrong scoffs. "But now we can control the situation from here, even work in tandem with Mustang's men back in the city. Now we just have to hold this position while you alchemists deal with the homunculi."

At the general's words, you realize that you haven't seen a trace of any homunculi yet. While that makes sense for the Fuhrer, since he should be at the bottom of a ravine, there should be at least three of them here. Maybe they're waiting until you actually get underground to try and confront you.

As you consider that, you turn to see that Yi and Hohenheim seem to have already disappeared. Perhaps they already headed off for the elevator. You consider what you'll do now.

>A.Head after them, get underground as soon as you can

>B.Colonel Armstrong was supposed to be here, but there's no word from him. You're kind of worried

You decide it'd be best to stay here and help secure the main gate for the time being, since the Elric brothers are going to be coming along anyway. In the meantime, you want to find out what the situation is like on the outside. You kind of left it for other people to deal with. Relaying your request through Leah, you ask Olivier if you can talk to Mustang using the Radio.

"Sure thing." the general replies. "Just don't take too long. Neither him nor we can afford much distraction."

Making your way up the command post, you watch as the northern forces tie up the central forces, and watch them with guns trained. Leah speaks to the soldier manning the radio, Karley, who connects her to Mustang and hands the receiver over. You lean in to listen.

"Hello?" you hear Mustang's voice. "Is that you General Armstrong? I didn't think you'd bother contacting me yourself."

"She isn't, Lieutenant Colonel." Leah replies. "It's just me. Iskander and the others helped get the northern forces here into the command post."

"Crawford? So you're there, huh? Then I take it the other path underground was blockaded off." Mustang muses. "Well as long as you get down there somehow, it doesn't matter."

"Sir, how are things going out there in the city?" Leah asks. "Do you have things under control?"

"For the most part." Mustang answers. "Most of the Central forces are focusing on command, or otherwise occupied, like cordoning off areas to civilians. We aren't meeting much resistance at this point. As for those humanoid monsters, I helped Tucker and the chimeras take care of most of them. They're finishing up and going to clear them out all the way to the Third Laboratory before sealing up the entrance to the underground there. Since things here seem to be mostly under control, I was considering heading up your way with Hawkeye. I might be able to lend a hand if you have to face a homunculus."

"Perhaps, Sir. We would appreciate it." Leah responds. "One more thing, have any of your men caught any sign of the Elric brothers arriving in Central yet?"

"I'm afraid not. But there's still some time left before the eclipse starts. They can make it." the Lieutenant Colonel assures. "That'll be the real hard part. Things have been smooth sailing so far. So stay on your toes."

With that, the conversation cuts out, and Leah hands the receiver back to Karley. You and Leah head back down from the command post, and see Colonel Armstrong, shirtless, emerge from inside command. Upon looking to see his sister's forces already here, the enthusiasm on his face is replaced by shame. You watch as his sister berates him.

Looking back toward command itself, you can see some smoke rising. You wonder if fighting is still going on in there.

You figure that with all the forces stationed here at the gate, maybe you would be best served by heading into command and helping there. At the very least, you can talk to the Colonel about the situation in there. You head over and interrupt Olivier's scolding, having Leah ask about it.

"Colonel, are you alright?" she begins. "Did something hold you up from arriving here at the gate? What's going on inside?"

"No need to worry about me, I'm doing just fine." Armstrong assures. Looking at him, you can see a few scrapes and scratches, but he looks more winded than injured. "I'm afraid I got held up trying to get out here, by a swarm of those monsters. Mannequin soldiers, they're called. They are quite troublesome, as they don't go down easy. I tried to make haste, even giving up on taking out some of them, but it seems I had already been distracted too long. I must apologize. Olivier, are your troops currently clearing out command?"

"That's right." the general replies. "They should be able to take care of things there just fine on their own. They're not soft enough to fall to those things."

You take another glance at command. There's more smoke than before. You get the feeling that mannequin soldiers fighting wouldn't cause that. There must be something else.

You head off toward command, as Leah thanks the Colonel and follows you, your teacher doing the just behind.

"Mustang was coming, right?" Izumi asks. "I suppose the gate here will be plenty secure without us. The Elric brothers will be able to catch up."

As you approach, you can see the smoking part of the building. There's another explosion, creating even more smoke. There's undoubtedly a fight going on there. You also see near the ground a large group of northern soldiers fighting a swarm of the mannequins. They're focused on keeping them contained, but the large number makes it difficult.

Figuring that the mannequins may be more or less a threat than the unknown subject causing the explosions, you decide to leave them be for now. Of course, you can't avoid them entirely, as some still manage to get in your way, but you and your teacher take them out as you carve a path. Heading up to the third floor, you come across the wing that the smoke was coming from. You look into the room in question, and your vision is a bit too obscured to see what's going on, but your hearing picks up the slack.

"Solf J. Kimblee!" you heaar a familiar voice shout. It's that of Yi. "I will be taking that Philosopher's Stone of yours and destroying it! It cannot be permitted to exist!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-PSVtxOdp0&index=67&

"Oh really now?" another voice laughs. You recognize this one as Kimblee. "I'd prefer you didn't, as I happen to like this little stone. Rather, if you're going to talk about things that can't be permitted to exist, that really depends on who's in charge, doesn't it? And the man in charge right now is Father. He happens to be of the mind that the practice of alkahestry can't exist! In this world, might makes right! The strongest make the rules, and the weak must submit! If you truly think your rules can overthrow Father's then be my guest! But I doubt you have the power to inforce your will! You can't even defeat me, let alone him or his homunculi!"

After that little spiel, there's another explosion. This area is probably getting less and less stable as the fight drags on.

Rushing in there is just asking to get killed, so you wave to Leah and your teacher to move into the roof carefully and quietly. If you can get a better look at the fight, you can decide what to do from there.

Crawling low to avoid the smoke, with your hands over your mouths, you all hug the wall. You eventually reach a couple of pillars, and are able to stand hidden behind them. From here, you can see a bit more clearly than before.

There are holes in the walls and floor, and some of the other pillars in the room have chunks blown out of them. Kimblee is using his Philosophers's Stone to use his explosive alchemy with no limitations. You're surprised Yi is even managing to survive. It seems he's using alkahestry to manipulate the smoke from the explosion to his advantage. His quick movements and the fact that he's making it hard to track him are his saving graces. But you can't imagine him finding a way to eke out a win at this rate. The room will be completely destroyed, and they'll be nowhere for him to run long before he gets a chance at a good shot.

Your group is luckily still unnoticed, but you still have to be careful. With the stone, Kimblee can fight back the second you reveal yourselves. Not to mention, trying to restrain him would be pointless. You're only going to get one shot.

Since Yi already has Kimblee occupied, you decide to take advantage of it. You sign to Leah, who explains to your teacher for you your idea.

"Isk says to wait until Yi makes a move, then go for Kimblee while he's distracted." she says. "He can't know about you, or he'll use his Philosopher's Stone to blow you up on the spot."

"I guess it's our best shot." Izumi whispers. "Since it is that dire, you should hang back, Leah. You can't protect yourself with alchemy, and this smoke would make it too hard for you to get a shot off on him anyway in the confusion. Just let us handle this."

Leah reluctantly nods, while you and Izumi pay attention intently to the fight. Every exchange results in the room falling further and further apart. There won't be much left soon, and everyone in here will fall to the floor below. But you imagine that's what Yi is waiting for. He knows he doesn't have any opening yet, so he's probably going to wait until the floor gives way under Kimblee before striking. Thinking that alone would work might be a bit optimistic, however. You doubt it would be enough. That's where you and your teacher will come in.

A few minutes pass, as the room slowly crumbles under the stress of the volleyed attacks. There's a huge gaping hole in the wall to the outside now, and the smoke is dissipating slightly. You can see clearly now the floor pockmarked by holes from the fight. You also catch your first clear glimpse of Yi. He's jumping from walls, to the remaining floor, to the rafters. His agility is unreal. But it won't keep him safe for much longer. And he knows it. As the smoke clears a bit too much to continue obscuring him, he throws his knives close to Kimblee's feet.

"Now take this!" Yi shouts, drawing a circle on the wall to which he clings.

The floor in front of Kimblee juts out into spikes, as the rest of the ground begins to give way. The idea is obviously to give Kimblee only one place to fall, but you're sure that with a Philosopher's Stone, it's only got the slimmest chance of being successful. You and your teacher rush out from your hiding spot and towards Kimblee.

As you expect, Yi's offensive is foiled by Kimblee as he just explodes the threat in a heartbeat. You try to hit him by surprise though, and transmute some stone into a similar attack from behind. However, it doesn't manage to take him out in one hit. your aim is a bit off. Kimblee is given gashes across his shoulder, side, and leg as he tumbles through the air.

He turns his head to glare at you, and is able to notice your teacher's attack coming in time. A standard attack from her, a giant stone fist, starts exploding before it can make contact with its target. The smoke obscures the sight of Kimblee as he tumbles to the floor below.

"Damn, we didn't quite get him." your teacher scoffs. "He knows we're here now. But he's hurt."

"I'm not going to complain at receiving your assistance, but things may have just gotten more difficult for us." Yi says, as he jumps down next to the two of you. "Know that the fight isn't one on one, he's liable to blow up everything. And we stand far less chance against that. There's nothing around here to transmute except for the building's material. For us, it's a huge disadvantage. We can only make standard attacks, while his stone has no limits."

The smoke starts to clear, and you can see Kimblee below you through the huge hole in the floor, holding his hand to his side. He brandishes the Philosopher's Stone once more.

You get an idea. You and your teacher may have lost the element of surprise, but you still have one more trick up your sleeve. You motion to your teacher back in the direction that Leah is hidden, then flash some signs in that direction saying to take aim. Of course, you make sure it's done from an angle Kimblee can't see well, and you don't turn your head to face Leah's direction. You aren't taking the chance that he could catch onto it.

"That's how we're playing it now huh?" Izumi asks, understanding your plan. "Alright. But you better be ready to take a beating to get this done. Yi, right? We're going down there to fight."

"Very well." the masked man replies. "I hope you know what you're doing."

All three of you jump down the hole, then take up ready stances facing Kimblee.

"Power in numbers, huh?" Kimblee coughs. "If you're not strong enough alone, work together to impose your will. Just like society. This was the kind of thing I wanted to get rid of. People not depending on their own power. Just one of the homunculi is strong enough to overpower a huge number of humans. They're able to impose their will on others by their own strength. And Father is even stronger than that. He can make every single other being alive bend to his will with his power. That's what I longed to see! You guys clinging to each other, pushing each other up.... There's nothing extraordinary about that!"

With that, Kimblee uses his Philosopher's Stone to cause another chain of explosions. The three of you have to duck in different directions to avoid the blast, and still get hit with some debris. It probably won't be long before this room meets the same fate as the one above it.

But you stop worrying about that. Right now, all you care about is lining up that shot for Leah. You clap your hands and charge in on the attack once more.

>A.Try to restrain Kimblee, however briefly. It could be the chance you need

>B.Try to make him dodge until he's pressed up against a wall that Leah has an angle on

>C.Get a bunch of attacks at him that he's forced to get rid of, it'll draw his attention and keep him in one place

You figure the best way for Leah to get a shot at him is if he keeps backing up until he has nowhere left to go. Of course, this is pretty risky for you, but it's got the best chance to succeed. You clap your hands, then advance.

At the same time, Yi is using alkahestry to attack with the surroundings like before. He seems to have been pretty tired out from earlier though, as he's doing a lot less jumping around. He's keeping a bit of distance, as he likely knows he's not in the best condition if he had to suddenly dodge. Your teacher on the other hand, is getting right into the fray with you. Her current tactic is to transmute some stone up from the floor to shield her from Kimblee's explosions, then launch that very cover in his direction as an attack.

You decide to focus on subtly directing Kimblee's movement, transmuting to attack when he starts to veer off, and transmuting to defend from his explosions in a similar manner to your teacher.

But none of you can keep this up forever. These explosions aren't as simple as something you can stand behind an obstacle to avoid completely, They're constantly causing you to be hit by rubble from the ceiling, or to lose your footing on the floor that's cracking from their force. More than once, you get knocked back and survive only because of your companions picking up the slack to distract Kimblee for the moments you need to stand again. Facing an endless onslaught of explosions, all three of you end up breathing heavily, beaten continuously by the blasts.

But your plan pays off. You eventually manage to press Kimblee's back to the wall, and his eyes widen. He's about to do something desperate. He raises the stone, about to make what seems like a huge transmutation.

Then the shot goes off. His hand is struck, the bullet taking off some of his fingers. With a gasp of pain, he drops the stone. You and your teacher dive in to finish him, but Kimblee doesn't back down. Even at the end of his rope, he presses his palms together to connect the circles on them. There's another explosion, and you're both sent flying back. You hit a wall hard, then fall to the ground where you're met with chunks of debris landing painfully on you. If you could scream in pain, you'd be doing it.

After a bit, you manage to wrench free, then stumble over to Kimblee. Your teacher is also beat up pretty badly, but is mostly alright. You can't say the same for Kimblee. He used the only thing he could in such short time as fuel for his explosion. His arms. He currently lies on the ground, bleeding out from where his shoulders used to be.

"I'm not like them..." he groans. "I can't... do as I please... I'm not strong enough to... Not on my own... All I ever wanted was that power... To be free... But you all let your chains to each other bind you... You'll never really be free, like them..."

Your teacher is about to retort, but before she can, Kimblee's breathing stops. He's dead.

Yeah, after this quest is over I'll be going back to Naruto. I'll probably be taking some time in between, though. You may not see it until some time in April
