Down the empty hallways you walked, everything silent save the echoes of your footsteps. You reach your destination—your new classroom. The sound of chalk becomes audible before you even see the door or even its window, but when you do look through you find Kururi writing down the date. Quietly, you slide the door open.

“Can’t believe they still use chalkboards in this century,” you say, “Good morning, Kururi.”

“A-ah!” she jumps, “G-good morning, Katsuya. What are you doing here so early?”

“Apparently, I’m in 1B now. Just wanted to check the room out.”

“You are? And isn’t the room… isn’t it exactly the same as the other one?”

“Well now I know, who would’ve thought?” you say.

“I-I see.”

“What are you doing here so early?”

“I’m the Class President, I have my duties.”

“It takes you an hour to write up the board?”

“…That’s right, I have to make sure every line is perfect. Every, last, line.” Kururi replies, ”How are you feeling?”

“Getting back into it,” You slide your books inside your new desk. “Thanks for the flowers.”

”It’s the least I can do.”

“I hope you weren’t hurt badly too.”

“I’m fine, it was only a few scratches,” she says, “I’m happy to see you’re okay. There was... a bit of blood.”

“Was there?” You rub the back of your head and don’t feel a single stitch or scar, to your surprise. “Huh. Well, I guess half of that was my fault, wasn’t it.”

“As if. I shouldn’t have stayed here…” she seethes, “Maybe coming back to school was a mistake.”

“Don’t say that,” you say, “You’re here for a reason, right? If you didn’t you would’ve settled for an easier school.”

“…You know, I did get almost full marks on an almost completely useless mock exam.”

“Tetsuyashi students aren’t exactly known for their academic talents.”

“…”

“And plus, if you didn’t come in, who would help me out with yesterday’s notes,” you say, and then adding with a leading smile, “Please?”

She sighs as she digs out a binder. “Here.”

“Thanks. I promise not to ruin it.”

“That’s reassuring,” she shakes her head.

Maybe if you opened up a little, she’d do the same.

You flip through the notes. It’s incredible, you can actually read her handwriting, unlike your own.

“Hey, we’re doing psi structures? You even drew diagrams, wow.”

“They tend to help me, so I take a little bit of time to add them.”

You stare at the interlocking chains of psi. “You know, you drew a pretty functional barrier.”

“…Did I?”

“Yeah, although I didn’t have these pictures to help me,” you say, “Took me a whole month to make anything that wasn’t like cotton candy. You know you can stand on these things, right?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea at all.”

“Right? I had this great idea to make a hoverboard with one and then fly off.”

“Oh no.”

“I went up about a couple storeys high, and then it slipped away underneath me. It was alright though, managed to land on someone’s shed; went right through it and crashed right in. Ran off as fast as I could. I’m pretty sure something’s still broken.”

She gives you a look of amused incredulity. “You should’ve known better. Psi cycles in and out of the body, and a platform would be incredibly difficult. Does it still hurt?”

“Sometimes,” you answer, rubbing your back, “You seem good with this stuff, how come I’ve never seen you make a barrier?”

“It’s… complicated, and it runs in the family.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s... I’m not sure if I shou—um, can explain.”

She looks away.

“Then, how about a live demonstration?”

“That’s...”

“Come on, there’s nothing to be afraid of. If you’re worried for me, I can take it. And if it’s you… uh, well the nurse’s office is a jog away.”

“Katsuya, that wasn’t very encouraging,” she weakly smiles, “But… fine. You can read my psi, right?”

“Right,” you answer, setting up a psi field.

“Here goes nothing!” she takes a step back, her pupils lighting up an deep crimson—the opposite color of psi.

Energy leaps out of her hand as she lashes forward—and crashes into your psi.

1/250 Kururi Kururu (???)

“This is…!” you step back.

Your psi field evaporates where her psi touches, but you don’t need to see it to know what’s going on. A barrier flashes to and from existence in a steady manner.

“This is my… no, the psi that runs through my bloodline.”

“Oscillating energy levels.”

“To make a barrier, I’d need to set the baseline to something really, really high. I’d run out of steam almost instantly,” she says, “Do you get it now?’

Why not modify a barrier so that it stores and releases energy over time, somewhat like a capacitor, instead of transmitting the entirety of the input instantaneously?

For that matter, if it runs through her bloodline, surely some of her predecessors must have already considered and tested workarounds?

“Hmmm.”

“What is it?” Kururi stars at you curiously. “I don’t... I don’t think I like that expression on your face.”

“Mind if I try something?”

“Um…”

“Don’t worry, this’ll only hurt me,” you say, “Probably.”

“Okay… I’ll trust you.”

With that, you touch the barrier in front of you, making direct contact with her barrier. You feel your psi being ripped away and pushed back with each cycle. You give it a push, aligning pieces that would default back if you let go.

32/250 Kururi Kururu (???)

There’s a peak to every rise, and a bottom to every fall. The limit… is set by her body. What’s natural, in other words. If the peaks don’t change… then… the rate of change?

[11]

Nothing changes. You grit your teeth. Then… what about the speed?

[97]

Something clicks. You feel the fluctuation slow to a crawl, what was once tearing away at you every three seconds is now thirty. She can maintain a barrier for approximately ten seconds and have it be steady enough to fend off attacks. Not quite better, but different.

“There we go…” you say, taking a step back and dropping to the seat behind you.

“What… what did you just do?”

“Slowed it down,” you pant, “Did you feel what I did to your psi? Don’t forget it, just do that.”

“It’s a bit complicated, but I think I can do it,” she says, “Thank you, Katsuya!”

You feel exhausted.

Well, you’ll get there. For now, you’ll just drop down onto your desk and try to wish your psi comes back in full strength by Practicals. Or at least enough to train properly.

A few moments pass as you two talk idly and she tidies up here and there. Soon, students enter one by one, giving you a glance as they’ve never seen you in here before. You’re too tired to care.

“Rival...?” you say, “So there's already a person you know that's more terrifying and sickly deviant than the image you have of me in your mind? Please, do go on.”

“She’s a sadist, the cruelest adversary I’ve had the fortune to encounter. Her ice-cold demeanor only makes the fire that stokes inside her vile heart only the more monstrous! Even the sound of her name shall not be pronounced, for it is akin to scratching a blackboard with one’s nails!”

“So… who is she?”

“A-as if I could ever let you two team up!” Yamikigo shudders, “Only in my nightmares, at most, would I do such a thing… Thankfully, Yukikata’s perversion extends only in the other direction, meaning you two would only cancel out! But still, I can’t risk it!”

“Yukikata, huh? Got it.”

“Ahh! How did you—did I say it by accident?!” she says, making a muffled cry as she tries to clamp her mouth down.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”

“The great Empress of the shadows has already been defeated… and so soon…” she buries her head in her arms.

You pat her head sympathetically, “It’s okay, that’s a good choice in a rival.”

“Uuu,” she cries, and then jolts up to swat your hand away, “Wait, just what do you think you’re doing to me?! Y-you can’t do that evil royalty!”

“Sorry, sorry,” you say, laughing as you lift your hand away.

The professor strides in, and that’s the point where you realize there would be no way you could recognize that it would be your teacher if it were not for the oversized lab coat on her. She’s a head shorter than you, and as she walks up, you watch as she climbs onto a small stool so that her head reaches high above her desk.

“Oho? I see we have a new student in the class. I assume the other students know you because you share the other class with them, the one with all the rowdy roughhousing,” she says, flapping the huge coat sleeves in the air, “I’m Professor Hakase, and I’ll be teaching Psi Theory for this class.”

She drops down, taking a pointer stick with her. When she extends it, it’s about her height. As you look on, you lightly pinch your arm to see if you’re dreaming. And when you didn’t wake up, you pinch even harder.

[1/2, give me a few]
>>
“Psi Structures!” she shouts to the class, “We covered the intertwining of psi yesterday and cyclical uses. Today, we’ll be talking about field effects. As you all know, psi fully disconnected from the body cannot be manipulated! However, each particle has an area of influence that information can still be transmitted through! By dispersing your psi in the maximum possible distance, you create what is known as a psi field! These provide the basis for the security systems in these buildings…”

You know all of this already. Well, sort of. You feel your way around, and everything she tells you is simply turning your actions into words. And so, you try your best to not fall asleep.

It doesn’t work.

You jolt up as Yamikigo jabs you in the side.

“Gah!” you seethe, trying not to make much noise.

“Wake up!” she whispers.

“Okay, okay!” you say.

She scribbles down some notes with her pen, the end catching your eye—a cute, cartoon skull.

“…Were you the one who gave me the cookies in the hospital?”

“…Ehn?” she exclaims as her face reddens, “This isn’t the time for this!”

It’s this or going back to sleep.

It’s Practicals. And your head still hurts a bit.

Yukikata’s brow visibly furrows, “…Did…the number of idiots multiply…?”

Oh. Is she pissed off at you? You don’t think you’ve ever seen her mad before. You never even thought she could even get mad. “So, what did I do? Did I do something?”

Yamikigo whispers to you, “She has a scary side, and you probably shouldn’t get on it.”

Yukikata slowly blinks, “My dear friend in the Student Council…” Rin? “…who’s the Secretary…” not Rin, “…asked me to do a favor… she wanted me to get recordings of your chamber sessions… and because I was curious… I watched some.”

You say, “I don’t like where this is headed.”

“I saw your classmate Saki in a match with you… and I saw your magic…” she says, then she shakes her head, “…No, not yours. I saw Rori’s magic,” as she goes on, her voice resolves, “I’ll be clear. I want you to stop.”

You meet her piercing stare. This isn’t the first time you had this sort of conversation, and you doubt it will be the last.

“There isn’t anything to fight over. I refuse.”

“Nothing to fight over? Is that what you think?” she says, “Watching you sully her art like this… it makes me sick.”

“Then—“

“…Do you know how hard she’s worked? Have… you ever seen her perform? Do you even know what her art really is!?” When you take a step back, she matches it, “I don’t care if you copy someone else’s art, or even mine! Lay your hands off her hers… that’s all I want.”

“This match, then, your magic…”

“I saw your match against Rori… you were utterly helpless… if this is the only way you can gain strength, then this match should be perfect.”

“If I win, I would have your art, and Rori’s too...”

“And if I win, you would still have mine as a consolation...”

“And if I refuse…”

“…I will tear you down, with the Student Council behind me...”

“…I have connections too,” you weakly toss out.

“…As strong as mine…?”

Yamikigo backs off as the air around you and Yukikata practically freezes.

”…If you win, I’ll acknowledge you…” she says, fully intending to defeat you.

“…No.”

“No?” she repeats.

“If Shiba feels this way, then she can be the one that fights me. And if she doesn't, then you have nothing to complain about. I shouldn't even have a chance, right? Since I'm so helpless against her. And you can tell her that for me.”

“She’s… too soft…” Yukikata replies, “…You will come to regret this.”

With that, she turns around and walks away, her long hair swaying behind her. You watch her walk away, anxious about what she can do. Suddenly, Yamikigo walks up to you and pokes you in your side, making you jump.

She asks, “Was that… a smart idea?”

“It’s my art. She can deal with it herself, and when the time comes, she’s free to make me eat dirt for a higher ranking. But for this, she can forget it.”

“Your art…” Yamikigo says, thinking. “You can… copy magic? Like a copycat?”

“That’s… uh, yeah. Like that.”

The girl cycles through various expressions cycle before stopping on something that resembles short lived determination.

“Then… I, the great Dark Dragon Empress, will allow you to make a pact with me!”

“A… pact?”

“A pact that’ll intertwine our destinies together! I shall lend you my magic and my assistance, and in return I only demand that you be my partner!”

“H-hey, that’s a bit…”

“It’s fate! We’ll storm the doubles matches together, sweeping through the fights! The two of us, against the rest of them!”

There’s stars in her eyes, like the reflection of a shooting star whizzing by.
>”…Alright. Let’s do it together.”

You give her a weary look, “Can I… think about this? It’s been a pretty long day.”

“…T-that’s!” she pouts

“Sorry, but this is a bit much.”

“…I understand,” she deflates, and then suddenly bounces back up, “Since I’m lenient, the Empress shall grant you until the end of the month to make your decision!”

“Thank you,” you say, “Oh great, magnanimous Empress.”

“I can sense sarcasm, you know.”

“I know.”

“You…!” she puffs up, “Katsuyaa!!”

“That wasn’t sarcasm, though,” you say as she chases you, threatening to punch a few extra holes into sides.

You try to hold back a small smile as you make a break for the practice chamber, closing the door before she can get in. Leaning against the door, you calm your breathing. You can’t catch any breaks, can you?

It’s there that you set up the most comfortable location you can think of, hide away from the camera, and then promptly clock out as you enter a deep sleep.

But the day’s not over. So please, wake up.

What, how long are you planning on sleeping?

Until everything’s over? What the hell?

Fine, Katsuya can rest for his totally-not-a-date.

So go be someone else.

You are Hitomi Minezaki, a side-character surely to be relegated an unfair amount of screen time despite knowing full well you are the shining star of this academy. Or, you’d like to believe that, if the Vice-President didn’t take all of the spotlight all of the time.

You’re not the type of person who thrives off of that… but still! A little recognition would be nice every once and a while!

A faint stream of sunlight spills through the gap between closed curtains. On the large desk in front of you, a nameplate says your name and position “Hitomi Minezaki - Student Body President.” It’s a bit dusty, but oh well. The Secretary and Vice-president are nowhere to be found, of course. The only one you can truly rely on is…!

“I’m back, President,” Rin says, closing the door behind him.

“We’ve known each other for almost a year, Rin; you don’t have to be so formal.”

“Ah, then, President Minezaki.”

“That’s not quite what I meant.”

“Pres Minezaki it is!”

You rub the bridge of your nose and sigh. “…So it is. What is the news?”

“Got a whole bunch, actually. I checked on Katsuya Nekoyo and Kururi Kururu. Also talked to Nishishio’s rep about the Cultural Festival thing. Oh, and can’t forget—think I got a lead on the suspect from Friday. The one that attacked Kururu.”

“Did you talk to Chiwa about the inhouse tournament?”

“Ah, hah… Secretary Captain Fujisaki… I forgot, sorry!”

The only one you can rely on… sometimes!

”Please, drop the titles, this isn’t what I asked for…”

“I can sum up the rest super quick. Got anything you’re interested in?”

Completely ignored…
>Nekoyo and Kururu.
>Cultural Festival.
>Suspect.

“Hmm…”

You’re not sure what you were expecting when you became a third-year at this academy, but so far, it’s been only disappointment. But it’s only expected that such a fate awaited you. What did you expect when the year rolled over, that you’d have your own personal fan club? No? How come your partner gets one!? He’s wasn’t ever even number one! This job is a pain. Okay, that’s a terrible thing to say for someone in your position, isn’t it? Oh god, you’re the absolute worst.

“…Minezaki? Hello, is anyone in there? Earth to Minezaki?”

“Oh, sorry! Tell me about Nekoyo and Kururu, if you don’t mind.”

“Sure thing! Ah well, I had that talk with Nekoyo like you wanted. He seemed a biiit unsure at the time, but now he looks like he’s willing. I think I get what Captain Fujisaki was talking about, I have high hopes for him! We might need to speed things up though, maybe we can shorten the festival.”

“If you see her around, please tell her to stop trying to live vicariously through her underclassmen.”

“Hahaha, sure thing.”

“No Rin, wait, I wasn’t serious! Please don’t. She’ll hit me with her bamboo sword again.”

“Got it! I’ll tell her to not hit you.”

“That’s not the point! Oh, never mind. Just continue. Please.”

“Sure thing. Kururu’s been… absolutely normal. Nothing suspicious at all. Yup.”

“…That’s it?” You click your pen against your forehead. You take everything you said about him back.

“She’s also been going home, probably. Not to her dorms at night.”

“Wait, what!? This is huge!”

“Not… really? Maybe she feels safer in her own home.”

“We have security! Oh, never mind.”

“It’s fine. Even if she does act up, I can take care of her, no problem.”

“Please don’t say things like that.” Especially when it hurts your image of him.

“Okay anyway, Cutural Festival is going over pretty smoothly. The rep is a nice guy, I like him. If we push it forward a week, I think he’d be okay with it.”

“And the suspect?”

“Her trail has vanished. However, me and security found something important!”

“What is it?”

“She belongs to another school! I have no idea which one, but surely one of them!”

If you clicked your pen any faster, you might just leave a bruise.

“Rin…”

“Yes?”
>”Please look into the suspect more carefully. Please.”
>”Don’t take your eyes off of Kururu even for a second, got it?”
>”Push the Cultural Festival forward.”
>”For the love of god, finish the tourney arrangements with Chiwa.”

“Please look into the suspect more carefully. Please”

“Will do. I’d need a bit more manpower, though,” he says, “But I’ll get on it, no problem.”

“Thanks, Rin. And also…” you stand up, pushing your chair back, “…Please, just call me Hitomi already!!

He looks at you, then he gives you a nervous laugh. “I can’t do that, you’re a superior and also a year ahead of me! I can’t be rude to you.”

“I see…” you say dejected. You drop back down to your seat, the feeling of death washing over you like a calm tide. Ah~ this is it, isn’t it?

“Oh, and Minezaki?”

You bring your head up, “Yes?”

“I got the yukata you wanted for the festival. Forgot to bring it up, but I’ll just get it really quick.”

“Oh! Rin, thank you! I can’t believe you remembered!” you face suddenly lights up.

His smile seems to get bigger with yours. “Least I can do,” he says, ducking out of the room. And not even a second passes before he peeks back in. “And as for your first name… I’ll use it when I surpass you. So wait for me, okay?”

And he’s gone again. It takes you a moment to process it, and you let out a sigh mixed with frustration and happiness.

You speak, to no one in particular, into an empty room.

“As if that would happen.”

That's a really good idea, and I feel dumb for not thinking of it.

http://pastebin.com/rnJwyp3f

There we go, a "short" pastebin.

I realized I've committed a whole slew of crimes, Hakase and awful jokes withstanding, and there was a whole lot of poor decisions that leads up to absolutely no one remembering ridiculously tiny particularities. Like having first and last names, and then have them both be used in irregular intervals.

Unfortunately my time machine only goes a minute into the future every 60 seconds, so I'll just have to try to make things better in the future.

Also, I still remember that one piece of advice from my last quest about readability and fleshing out characters. I'm sorry, anon.

It has... complicated things, but this list will help. I had begun to blend many different girls into a single, amalgamate "Alpha Waifu", which is dangerous for many reasons.

Love the quest OP, but sometimes when you refer to a character who isn't in the screen, I forget who that character is. Is there a character list with some brief descriptions somewhere I could read? A list of our store PSI powers would be helpful too.
