The Fire Rises

Character info pastebin in progress: http://pastebin.com/iB0tb7rz
Dice cheat sheet: http://pastebin.com/994WTT3g

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the game, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

Pokemon:
Gobble (Munchlax)
Mace (Roggenrola)
Belladonna (Roselia)
Dice (Totodile)

Badges: 1

Recently: You do a lot of overdue training, race Jane, and watch a battle.

Volcarona floats back and forth while facing Gobble and keeping it’s distance. They’re in no hurry, and taking time to size you up. It flies strangely, like it’s tied to a point on the ground in front of it and is straining against a tether. You wonder how well it can maneuver or turn.

The fire slowly expands anywhere it can be found. You remember a fire safety video you watched once that explained how quickly, exponentially, fire can grow. Things seem perfectly fine now, but it could spread quickly. Plus it’ll weaken parts and cause them to fall.

It’s three pokemon each in this battle. But if that flying pokemon can probably just wait you out if you let it.

Unless Iron Defense is being treated as a general buff to defenses I don't think it would help that much against a (primarily) special attacker. May as well just take advantage of its weaknesses.
>>
>>1175460
I was thinking as using it as long term durability and maybe to strengthen Mace when we start having him rocket around.
>>
>>1175460
I think the idea is that maybe it makes him heat resistant to the residual heat? But yeah, Volcarona isn't gonna have that many physical attacks unless the guy is going easy.

“Hurricane!” The Fire Priest yells.

Winds whip up and soon Mace is engulfed in a furious tornado. It’s technically forming over the wooden platform, and that’s one of the big differences right? Maybe you should look that up after. Whatever the case, it starts pushing Mace, then lifts him into the air a few feet.

Uh oh! A chunk of wood is going to hit him, too! It’s just your luck!

“Mace! Iron Defense!”

Mace quickly uses the move before smashing into the flying wooden column and coming to a skidding stop. He looks relatively unscathed from that.

“Good, job, Mace!”

“Clever, but it won’t save you from the heat of our souls!”

What does that mean?

>Mace! Rock Blast, now!

“Sunny Day!”

The fire closes in on Mace. You hadn’t noticed at first, but the winds from before really accelerated it. The edges fall away and Mace begins to run out of room. He can stay for a bit, but not long. The sunlight is slowly increasing.

“Mace! Rock Blast!”

The fiery bug (is it flying type or bug type?) works on Sunny Day and already charging it’s attack while Mace fires a barrage of rocks. They pelt Volcarona, once, twice, thrice! Then another! The fire pokemon twirls as it goes down below the flat wooden area that Mace is on..

But it rises up! One wing beats twice as hard as the other as it manages to land on the wooden platform. It’s surrounded by fire on all sides.

“Solar Beam! Save Absorb for the next one!”

Green energy gathers around it. That thing’s fast!

>Fire your jets and dodge! Just make sure to land on something.

“Mace! Headbutt! Give it everything you have! And when you’re done that, give it more!”

Mace listens, and he hears you. He feels you. There are smarter, or more clever ways to handle this situation. But this isn’t about that. This is about the heat of battle. He’s made it clear he wants you to show your passion. For this one fantastic moment, you’re not trying to win a battle. You’re going to win a test of wills. It’s not even about fighting your insecurities, although that’s probably the spark that made you decide to do this. It’s that deep, hidden, frightening desire to go beyond your limits, and to push Mace to go beyond his. There’s nothing scarier or more excited than seeing where they truly are.

Mace runs, then rockets at his opponent. He’s lifted off the ground and picking up speed.

The Fire Priest laughs madly. “Yes. YES! Glorious! The way of fire isn’t hiding it the shadows, it’s bringing the light and heat of your passion out for all to see!”

Mace rockets around a splintering chunk of wood. The green light finishes gathering around Volcarona. Even if it’s your opponent, you can’t help but admire the it’s grace and concentration as it fires.

The beam blows into Mace, almost stopping him in mid flight. But he fires stronger and pushes on. The fire all around suck into the green energy beam, creating a terrible and awesome blow of wind and heat. But Mace pushes even harder.

Everything slows. The sparks and fire and debris float and everything stands still. It's only now that you realize that you're screaming.

Their heads collide. Volcarona and Mace crash over the edge of the platform. Volcarona is clearly out, but it’s unclear about Mace.

“Mace! Grab on!”

Mace shakes himself awake. His foot stretches out, reaching for the vertical beam. He’s dropping quickly.

He connects. It causes him to spin and create a cacophony of wooden tones as his limbs embed into, then come out of, the wooden beam. He slows enough to come to a yanking stop, and you breath a sigh of relief.

Volcarona is retrieved, then replaced with a Rapidash. It lands on the platform above Mace. They don’t have line of sight to each other, but that doesn’t mean Mace is safe where he is.

“Just rest for a minute. Don’t strain yourself.”

Rapidash stomps a hole into the floor. The strong pokemon loses it’s balance for a second as it has to fish it’s foot out. For being on such a rickety and flaming platform, it sure is keeping calm. You guess this isn’t it’s first time, though.

“Gah. Can’t get it much wider than that, can you? No matter. Ember! Force it out of hiding and Solar Beam”

Mace peaks out from the pillar he’s stuck himself into. A whizzing Ember pelts him in the face and burns him. He uses his Rawst berry, though. But still, he’s it rough shape. You think even another weak move like that might just knock him off, or out.

Rapidash rears back and looks for a better angle of attack. It tries stomping around the hole to enlarge it.

“Your passion is admirable, but your pokemon is in an impossible position. Throw in the towel for him, and send your next one out.”

Is that a test, or does he mean that?

“Mace! Rocket up and Smack Down!”

Mace moves his weight up and down. One, two three, and he jumps up. He fires his excess energy to fly up.

But it gives out after a second. He reaches an apex, then starts going down. He makes a noise and pushes to give himself more power, but despite getting a few feet higher, it’s a losing battle.

More wood is kicked out, and Rapidash has a large hole to fire through.

“Solar- no. Fire Spin.” His tone has disappointment in it. “Carefully.”

Mace is spun around in a whirlwind of fire. It slows his descent and he bumps his head into a pillar. It’s not that hard, but it takes out whatever fight was left in him.

And it also keeps him from dropping into the water like a...well, a rock. You look to the Fire Priest. Give motions to Mace with his great eyebrows.

You take the hint and retrieve Mace before he starts falling faster.

“Good job, Mace. I’m proud of you.”

You reach for your next pokemon. Rapidash looks like it’s getting antsy on the flaming, flat open platform. It won’t last much longer.

Dice is also susceptible to solar beam

There's still a battlefield for Gobble to utilize and his Thick Fat offers him better protection. If we send Dice in now and we lose all the platforms Gobble will have no zero mobility. This way, if Gobble gets KO'd, Dice has the water advantage.

I meant more in the sense that he wouldn't deliberately hit at full force or do anything else that would seriously risk it's health. Which is exactly what he did.

“Gobble! You’re up!”

You send Gobble out. He lands on the least flame-touched part of the platform. But it’s got to be getting hot there.

The Fire Priest looks lost in thought for a second, but the appearance of a new opponent takes him right out of it. “Rapidash! Let’s show that Munchlax what speed means!”

Oh yeah. Rapidash are supposed to be really fast.

Gobble slams his fist into his hand, then makes a sumo stance. His small size makes it look more cute than menacing.

Rapidash lowers it’s head in preparation to charge.

Is it bad that I don't ever want Gobble to evolve? Snorlax is grrat, but Munchlax is significantly significantly better.

>Focus Punch, that’ll ring its bell!

Punch the ground once it starts its charge. Trying to outspeed a Rapidash is pointless, so let's make it so it doesn't have room to even use its speed. This should also minimize the chances of it interrupting our punch.

“Poison Jab! Let’s take a bite out of that staying power Munchlax’s have!”

He’s not just blindly attacking in his passion. He’s smart. The fire horse points it’s horn and charges. Gobble is hit hard and poisoned. You’re glad you’ve been feeding him well during training and working on defenses, because on any other pokemon, that would probably do more damage.

It’s your turn. “Gobble, counter with Metronome!”

Gobble flicks his fingers, wiggles them, then looks confused and worried as energy gathers all around him.

“What move is that?” You hear an observer say.

Rapidash takes a step back.

Then Gobble Explodes! The wood platform cracks into a thousand pieces and flies in different directions. Rapidash flies off of it and smacks into the cliff-side, kicking and panicking. The fire Priest holds an arm over his face to shield from splinters as he retrieves his pokemon.

Your heart falls into your stomach from worry before you spot Gobble. He’s on a bit of platform that’s crashing down. You quickly retrieve the poor, fainted, Munchlax.

You feel a slight aura of disapproval from the crowd. You’re not sure why. Nobody is calling you names or anything, it just feels like you’re losing everyone after the great display Mace gave earlier. You definitely weren’t hoping for a move like that, but you’re still impressed with the power of it.

“Good job, Gobble. Sorry your time was so short.” You try to sound optimistic. That wasn't exactly lucky.

The only part left is the more indoor-ish area of the temple. The explosion took off a lot of the top of that, though.

Jane gives you a funny, scary look. It feels like she’s pressuring you or something. She’s got a strong presence sometimes.

The Fire Priest throws out his pokemon at the same time as you. He hasn’t said anything about the Explosion.

“Go, Dice!”

“Go, Quilava!”

The furry little ferret quickly finds cover inside the remaining building. Even with all the damage and windows removed, there are places it can hide. You can clearly see Dice though, and he’s wandering in to find his opponent.

The fire licks around the edges. He might be waiting you out. Or he might be luring you into thinking that so he can pounce.

“Inferno! Let it feel your burning passion!!”

As it comes out of it’s hiding spot and unleashes flaming hot heck, Dice casually bends backwards and completely avoids it. A huge gout of flame crashes against the cliff side near you. Wow, despite being so far, you still feel the warmth.

“Scary Face! Don’t let it use it’s speed to get away!”

It freezes as it sees the terrifying look Dice gives. You can’t see it from this angle, but it must be a good one. Quilava doesn’t even try to run back to cover now. It’s caught completely out in the open.

“Water Gun!”

Dice spits a stream of water at his fiery opponent. It strikes her and almost pushes her over, but she’s low to the ground and it’s still a relatively weak move. It hurts a lot, though. Steam rises up from the water that splashes on the floor and walls. The fire is closing in.

“A basic strategy, but you should know that we face Water types all the time. I hope you’re bringing more passion like how you started. Wild Charge!”

Quilava hugs the floor and runs up. It’s slower than you’d expect, but you guess that’s what Scary Face is for. Electrical sparks fly off of it as it rushes and slams into Dice. They both tumble backwards and stop a few very short feet before the edge closest to you.

Quilava looks like she’d think twice before using that move again, but at the same time, she might not have a choice. Mace flops backwards and somehow manages to get himself upright. You’re not sure if that was the result of your training or he just landed that way.

“It comes down to this.” The fire Priest says. A wooden beam crashes down where the pokemon were fighting a few seconds ago. “Don’t let the heat of the moment blind you, though.”

What does that mean?

“Quick Attack! If it doesn’t finish him, then get away and let the fire do it!”

“Bite! Hurry!”

Quilava ducks down, then slams into Dice. A ranged attack might have missed it. But that doesn’t mean Bite will hit. The fire pokemon is scrambling away. But Dice shifted his weight around, using his tail as a counterbalance, and already has his teeth closing down on Quilava’s rear end. He lifts it off the ground and shakes it all over. He tosses Quilava away into a wall.

The fire pokemon lays on the ground. But then it puts its front paws down and starts pushing.

Dice leans over. He’s heaving. Oh jeez, the heat must be really intense, the fire is all around him. But you can’t tell if Quilava is totally out or not. It’s still moving, but still on the ground.

The structure creaks and drops a foot. It’s going to completely give way any second now.

You see him go deeper into the structure. It shifts and you let out a nervous “Eep!”

The fire climbs higher. You can see the support beams being eaten away by the fire.

You bite your nails. You hate biting your nails. You only do it when you’re really, really worried.

Dice finally appears in view. He's carrying a struggling Quilava. It fights him as he pulls it out.

A major wooden beam cracks and it starts falling! Oh no oh no oh no!

Dice runs out, holding the still-fighting Quilava. He dives out. Even in his spacious, less aware nature, he seems annoying that Quilava is struggling with him. He gives a gentle but commanding bite as they both fall.

Quilava vanishes in a beam of light, and you look up to see the Fire Priest holding her ball.

He nods to you. Somehow, you feel a similar type of validation as that time you helped Grandpa put in a new fence.

There’s a quiet splunk noise far below.

Dice! You quickly take out his ball and call him back. Only a few short seconds later, the entire structure comes crashing down.

You watch it for a few seconds, then feel the overwhelming need to sit down. You let Dice out. He gently bites your arm.

“Good job, Dice. Good job.”

[We're running again tomorrow. Thanks for coming!]

You sit on your butt for a minute. You feel like the battle lasted hours. Belladonna and Dice aren’t sure what to do and sit next to you. Well, Bella is more interested in the people watching, but they’re quickly losing interest.

Jane’s shadow stands over you. You can just tell it’s hers now. You look up and see her making a funny face. Before she can say anything, the Fire Priest's voice nearly plows you both over.

“Little John. What a battle.”

“Thanks. You too.”

“I wasn’t finished. Now, that head on attack with your Roggenrola. That was something else. You did that purely for the passion of it. But keeping him in after he had no hope, and exploding with your other pokemon,” he raises a hand to silence you preemptively, “I know, it was Metronome, but moves like that are like starting a bonfire deep in the woods. You let your fire get out of control. And rescuing Quilava. You must understand that I had everything under control. Why did you do it? Hmmm? Do you think you know better than I, who has this battle every year? Hmmm?”

“I didn’t think about it. I just acted.”

He looks you up and down, and strokes his chin.

He bursts into laughter. “You’re a hothead. A man led by his determination, ambition, and competitive nature. But you’re not getting the passion badge.”

He doesn’t have to laugh.

Your heart sinks. You let your pokemon down. How are you going to explain it to them after they trained so hard? Dice gently bites your hand, and Bella looks to Laki over on the other side to fix it.

“You’re getting the warmth badge. Because I think under that reckless, fiery spirit, you’re a nurturer at heart. And I want you to remember that the next time you let your competitive nature get the best of you. You don’t need any help there, unlike most young trainers. You’ll be fine in time if you keep yourself in check, young John.”

He pins the badge on your shirt. Oh man, not this shirt, the material isn’t supposed to get pins in it. You fight the urge to say something and let it happen. You can fix it later, probably.

You feel a bit guilty in that you’re questioning his judgement a bit after all this. But you put that thought aside for now though.

“Jane. You’re clever. You’re focused. You’re a torch. A jet. Your flame isn’t large, but it’s able to weld and build.” He chuckles to himself as he pins a badge on her. “You keep your friend in check. Your cool head is valuable in the heat of the moment. But you need to work on stoking your ambition and drive. Dream big.” He leaves to go to the others.

Jane’s face has changed. When she first approached, she looked like she wanted to say something. But now she’s got that same wicked grin. Like her assumptions about you were all proven right.

Y'know, I'm a bit curious about something the priest said. Priest seems to think Jane needs to stoke her ambition and drive.

My gut instinct is "bullshit", but I can't actually back that up. I have literally no idea what Jane actually wants out of her life. Maybe that's where the priest is coming from, saying she's thinking smaller than she should be.

Maybe we could bring it up with her?
>>

>>
>>1181293
It would be interesting to hear Jane try to explain it, though. Talking shit about a priest's character judgement would tighten her right up, but if she doesn't dismiss him then he has to be on the money with her as well.

She could always dodge, though. Not sure how far we want to try and chase that thread.

>>1181344
I still think the Electric Leader was an ass to Hana too, yeah she didn't commit that hard, but that is a style of battling.
>>
>>1181315
I assumed that it was a different-but-equal sort of badge; a badge for nuturing warmth instead of blazing passion.
>>
>>1181315
I disagree. I think he's a little overconfident about what he can tell about a person from a battle, but truth is Herb's warm and Jane's focused. And Herb's ambition is dangerous in the sense that he can stretch himself too thin. If Jane really only wants to show us up, then she should aim for something more meaningful.
>>
>>1181354
Yeah I'm not getting the participation award vibe other anons are.

It's like they want to be slighted
>>
>>1181354

I'm happy with our badge. John is nurturing. Fire can be nurturing. It works.

I don't see a problem unless it isn't accepted by the Elite Four, or something. Until someone can show me that there's a substantive issue I'd like to move on from the subject.

>>
>>1181385

He explicitly noted that she was too afraid to let her pokemon get hurt. Something like that isn't a strategy, it's something completely incompatible with battling that she'll have to overcome if she wants to be a good battler.

You let your pokemon out and check them over. Gobble is awake but not moving. He looks too comfortable to move. Dice is still running around, but much slower. He took that Wild Charge dead on. Mace is just as pooped as Gobble, but he looks really content.

Jane eyes them over as well, then, satisfied they’re okay, holds out her finger. “You may be able to fool some people with that ‘nurturer’ act, and even the wisest of priests might buy into it a little, but the fire priest called you out on your endless ambition. It’s only a matter of time before everyone else figures it out, and-”

“You all did great.” You whisper to your pokemon. You close your eyes and put your hands on Mace. You reach in deep to try to heal him. You feel like there’s maybe a little progress, but not much. He’s really tired. Still, it’s better than before, and he looks like despite his injuries, he can move around a bit.

Gobble is much the same. He’s not totally knocked out anymore, but you’d hesitate to use him in a battle without a big advantage. He looks a little confused at the sudden increase of energy, but dismisses all thoughts when you toss him and the others some food.

Dice is healed a little too. You figure it counts for as much as healing the Quick Attack damage. Maybe a little less, that Quilava could hit.

“...And that’s why, as my rival, I won’t go easy on you. And...hey, did you give them some sort of weak potion? You’re not cheaping out on that stuff, are you?” She turns from normal Jane to angry Jane.

Satisfied, you get up and face Jane. You shake her hand. “You were really impressive. You earned that badge. Charizard looked really tough.”

She’s a bit dumbstruck but she lets you shake. She even seems happy, for a second.

Her eyes go wide suddenly and she examines her hand, the grabs yours to look at your palm. “Huh. Nevermind. I thought I felt something.” She even relaxes a bit. “Well. I guess Mace was impressive back there too. Enough to make up for your lack of strategy, anyway.” She leans over to look at your badge. “Do you know the history of why there are different badges? Don’t answer, I can tell from your face you don’t. If you don’t want me to crush you the next time we battle, go do some research on the islands. It’s about respect, mainlander.” She turns to walk away. Despite her words, her tone wasn’t all bad. It’s warming up.

Janebin Idea
It's her final confrontation with evil mastermind Herb and she's running to deliver the final blow when she trips and falls on her face. When she get's up she finds Herb there helping her and asking if she's okay. And then they have a date and things progress from there leading to things like hand holding and kissing.
Jane then wakes up in bed with a vague sense of dread but no solid memory of her dream.

“Maybe you could teach me sometime. How about over coffee. My treat.”

She stops. She very slowly turns around. She looks furious. She grabs your shirt and yanks you close. “That’s not funny!”

“What’s not-”

“Never, ever, joke about a date, or jerk a girl around. What, you just want to humiliate me and call me names, huh?”

“No, I just wanted to have some coffee and talk. I didn’t mean it as a date, or-”

She lets go. “Just coffee and talking? That wasn’t some sort of date joke?”

“It wasn’t. Honest. I want to learn more and I think you could teach me.”

She looks into your eyes. “Okay, then. Before the next gym battle. But you’re not paying for mine. Bring something to write with, and don’t dress too well.” She looks like she’s trying to hide her face. “Sorry,” she barely mumbles as she fixes up your collar, then turns away.

“But where are you going next, and how will we-”

“Please. I’ll know where you are. Train hard until then.” She walks off.

You head over to Hana, Laki, Keira, and Valerie.

“Have fun with Jane?” Laki asks sarcastically.

“That was intense!” Keira almost yells. “Right, Nincada?”

“Congratulations.” Hana says. “You must have trained hard. I’m glad I didn’t go.”

“You aren’t going to battle?” Valerie asks.

“Sorry for making you come all the way over here.” Hana looks embarrassed.

“I told you. I don’t care as long as we can get to the contests. But you came to challenge the gym, right?”

If gyms aren't going to be her thing, that's fine. But we should take the chance while training to push her on what she wants to do instead.

We know she's generally trying to get out and live life more fully, but she could use more focus on what that actually means.

“Don’t worry, Hana. You’ll do fine!” Valerie tries to encourage her. She gets distracted when Laki puts an arm around over her shoulder, though.

“Well, if you don’t want to, that’s fine. But if you want to train, maybe we can do it together?”

“Do it together?” She gulps, then shakes her head. “Train! Right! I’d like that. But I think I should get a third pokemon first. Could we do it...train, after?”

“You two were going to fish, right?” Keira says. “Want any help?”

She doesn’t sound like she’s inviting herself. Ever since you had that talk, she’s been trying to help out with small things here or there. You’re not sure if you should discourage this to stop her from feeling like she has to all the time, or if you should invite her along so she’s included.

You look to Hana. She smiles. No hints there. At least, none you can read. You’re starting to think that girls say a lot when they don’t say anything at all. Like how dad gets reminded to take out the trash or do other things just by looking at mom sometimes.

“Sure, let’s all go! A threesome of fishers. The more rods dipped in, the more likely we'll get a big one!”

“John!” The fire priest yells out to you. “Young John. Don’t leave yet!”

Uh oh. Are you in trouble?

“Your TM. I thought we’d have more challengers today.” He huffs. “Here you go.”

“Thanks! What is it?”

“Sunny Day! It works by...”

You smile politely as he explains. You don’t want to be ungrateful. You hate your luck, though. When he finishes explaining, he looks at you and your friends. “Priestess Keira. I forgot to mention. My mother passed away yesterday. She’s being prepared now, but I wanted your thoughts on what to send with her.” He holds out two items.

Did he just say his mom died?

“Those both meant a lot to her, and to you. I can tell.” She examines them. A comb, and a small locket. “They’re small. Why not send both? Attach them together well, though.”

“Very wise. I will. Thank you.” He bows and leaves.

You look to Val. She’s as surprised as you are.

“Enjoy fishing.” Laki says, getting really close to Jane. “We’ll meet you later tonight at the docks. Come on, there’s a stream we can wash your hair in. It’s down a ways.” She grabs Valerie’s hand.

“Stay out of trouble!” Keira waves as they leave.

“Let’s try from the beach.”

“Good idea!”

You all head to the beach. Bella and Totodile are out walking, but you put Gobble and Mace in their balls for now. They could do the walk, but they earned a break.

“Keira. I had some questions about the Fire Priest and his mom.”

She perks her head up.

“He seemed really calm about it. And why did he have the items, What do you do with your dead?”

“We send them to the other world.” She seems confused you’d even have to ask. She explains about it. You remember some of this, but she goes way into detail. Death is just the next step. Lots of people do get sad, and that’s natural, but she heard his mother was in poor health, and as a member of the clergy he’s probably more prepared than most, even if he’s not in the Ghost caste. They all have their roles, but they also have a tight knit bit of commonalities and all work together.

“It’s like baseball.” Hana says. “Everyone has a different role, but everyone plays for the same team.”

“Like the ball of bases! Yes!”

“So, the items, those go with her?”

“Yes! The items are more symbolic than anything, but it’s still important to do. Auras come from all of us, and they...umm...what’s a good word...paint, everything you touch. The more emotion you have with it, the more it stays. Sending something that was important in this life life gives comfort in the next. I’ve prepared a lot of bodies and talked to a lot of families when someone passes.” Keira says, like it’s no big deal that a young girl works with dead bodies.

You knew some of that, but you guess now that you know Keira a lot better, it seems weird for some reason.

“What did you do when your grandpa passed?” Keira isn’t sure if she should ask. She looks prepared to start apologizing if this is a sensitive subject. "He wasn't left where he died, was he?"

Oh. Grandpa. You miss him now. You know Keira is just curious, but that sounded a little insulting and insensitive.

“He was an organ donor, and when that was done, his body was left to a university for students to use.”

Hana cringes and looks concerned about what Keira will say.

“To...use?”

“Yeah. For research and practice for the students. He had a unique bone spur on his ankle too, so he wanted them to make sure to study that since the doctors couldn’t figure it out when he was alive.” You’re still proud of him for that. It used to bother him a lot, even if he pretended like it didn’t. But his last act was to try to make it into something positive for medical students.

“Oh...okay.” Keira holds onto a tree to steady herself. “Okay.”

“Are you alright?”

She gives a fake smile. “Yup! I’m sure his spirit is completely fine, being tethered to concerns of the mortal world like that. That’s...totally fine.” She’s really straining not to say anything. You appreciate the effort, but it’s still a little alienating to see how much she disapproves. Grandpa’s last gesture meant a lot to you. He was always looking to help people out in any way that he could.

You decide to drop it for now. She probably just needs some time to wrap her head around it. You were surprised at how casual the Fire Priest was about his mom, after all.

You arrive at the beach. Hana looks incredibly relieved to point it out, and the weather, and the wind, and the ocean, and anything that’s a different subject.

“I can’t eat it, and it’s not my place to end it, but I’ll help with catching.” Keira says about any fish you might cook. “Remember to bring me anything you don’t end up eating.”

Well, you’re hoping for Chinchou, so you’ll worry about fish if that happens. Now. Let’s see. What would make good bait?

>Make a lot of easy food to cover a wide area
>Work on one exquisite, small basted appetizer. Really focus on making it perfect

You go pick up some bait from the fishing hut down the way. Hana insists on paying, and gets two massive buckets.

“Think this’ll be enough?” Hana lifts the one with her good arm with ease. The other, not so much.

“You fishing for Wailmers?” The fisherman running the hut jokes. “It’s enough. Even my luck with fishing isn’t bad enough that I’d need a whole bucket, let alone two.”

“We’re fishing for Chinchou.” You tell him.

“Ah, those crafty little ones. Most fishermen avoid them. No pearls or anything. You might get a Deep Sea Scale, but it’s usually a lot of work and tall hair. They have a good price for a reason, y’know.”

“That’s okay. I just want to catch one.” Hana tells him.

“Oh! Well in that case, you might get lucky. As lucky as pulling in an angry, electrified pokemon is, anyway. But they come out more at night, dontcha know. Who taught you to fish?”

“Aisake, on the other island.” You answer literally.

“That hack? He couldn’t catch a drop of water if he fell into the sea. I should know. I’m just brother.” He grabs your rod. “No no no. This won’t do at all. Kid. What you need is a better rod. I’ve got just the thing, too, if you’re willing to pay.”

He gestures to a very advanced looking fishing rod. You flip over the price tag to read it. Oh wow. That’s everything you have.

“Can we rent it?”

Keira catches up and listens to whatever it is you’re talking about.

“You can rent plenty of rods here, but this isn’t that type.”

“How about working it off somehow?” People always talk about trainers taking odd jobs. You aren’t used to asking that sort of thing, but you still feel a bit fired up from before. “I can cook.”

“Herb, it’s okay.” Hana tells you,

“Cook? Psh. What do I need a cook for? My wife hates cookin’ and bringing her home something to fry up is the only thing that makes it worth choking down.”

You’re not sure if he’s joking.

“But I can use some help with a few things. Tell you what. I’ll make up a list, and you do everything on it, and do it well, you can keep the rod.”

“Oh. Is there any chance I can use the rod as I work it off?”

“Feel my beard.”

You hesitate.

“Come on. Feel it. Reach out and touch it.”

You slowly reach out, then touch his beard. After a second he slaps your hand away. “I said feel it, not feel it up. Buy it dinner next time you go that far. Now, does that beard feel like a baby’s?”

“N...no?”

“Then I wasn’t born yesterday, now was I! If I let you walk out of here with that thing. I ain’t ever gonna see you again.”

Keira, despite giggling, steps forward and assures him that on her word as a priestess, you won’t rip him off. He looks a little unsure, still, but he goes with it.

“Alright. Come back later. I’ve got to add a few things to my list if we’re doing it that way.”

With the new rod, the bait, and the beach to yourselves, you get to work. You set the bait out a bit inland, then stand off a bit and fish. There’s room for Pokemon to come onto land if they want and you’re far enough away to fish and not scare them off.

You let your pokemon relax. Everyone except Bella is tired, but the calm air keeps her from getting into too much trouble on her own. Keira helps a lot with keeping an eye on things, too.

You’re standing on the beach with your bare feet. Hana is letting her shoes and pant legs get soaked. She seems like she’s having a good time and you’re talking a lot, but you still wish she’d relax a little more.

It takes awhile, almost until dusk,, but you get a decent haul. Hana is surprisingly good at the cleaning part. Keira gives them all a short blessing. You feel a bit uncomfortable being reminded that fish are living things, but you guess that’s part of the symbolism behind the gesture. They’re not like Pokemon, though.

On that note, get a tug. You start pulling it in. Back, back, come on...

Yes!

Oh. That’s different. It’s a Seel. And after reeling it in, you see a few more follow.

They start advancing and sniffing, getting closer to the bait.

You look to Hana. She has no idea what to do.

They mostly seem like they’re not hostile, but the one you caught is looking a bit angry. A sudden move might provoke it

>Feed them. There’s plenty for everyone.

But we've already caught fish, this is a couple hours after buying said bait. She's already been gutting them.
>>
“Is it okay to feed them?”

Hana looks around. She thinks for a second, but when her gaze catches the big round eyes of a Seel that approaches, she melts. “It’s not okay. It’s a must.”

She goes to the bucket and tosses some out. The pokemon are confused at first and leap away, but their hunger overtakes them and they start going for it. She tries to get them in closer. A few even eat out of her hand.

Keira leaps up from watching and grabs some bait. She sneaks up on Hana, deftly pulls back the opening of the pocket on the back of her pants, and looks like she’s going to put some bait in. But she changes her mind and stops herself.

Hana turns around and is surprised to see Keira. Keira offers bait to the approaching Seel on her right, and they both laugh together.

Belladonna climbs up your back and hands behind your head. She points at the scheming Seels any time they get close to make sure you’re aware of them. She isn’t picking a fight, but she wants to be by you if something breaks out, despite the current happy mood.

You feed one Seel, then the next, then the-

“Gobble!”

He licks the food from your hand and flops away like one of them. Well, you guess he earned it. You just hope its not bad for him to eat.

“Chinchou!” Hana proclaims! She jumps and points. You notice how high she gets on that first excited hop, and how deep into the sand she lands.

It approaches behind the Seels. You guess it was seeing how things would play out. They give it a wide berth, but still keep jockeying around for more bait.

Hana tosses some bait to the Chinchou. It sniffs it, takes a cautionary bite, but looks disinterested.

>Season some bait for it and give it to her

You wave the bait high and try to get the attention of all the Seels. Bella grabs some from your hand and imitates, trying to help.

Keira, seeing what you’re doing, jumps in to help and lure away the stragglers. Chinchou almost gets distracted by the bait landed near it, but Hana keeps its attention.

You quickly grab a nice, solid-ish piece, and apply a few spices and things from your tactical emergency spice stash. These are the ones you never want to run out of. A quick dash of this, a little of that, and voila! You'd eat it yourself, if the smell of raw bait didn't make you want to gag. You toss it over to Hana. A bit splatters over her face when she catches it. Keira and Belladonna grab the attention of the Seels that seemed interested by tossing more bait. You'll be out soon, so you hope things go well with Hana.

“Hi Chinchou. My name is Hana.” She looks like she feels a bit silly. “How are you?”

It slowly moves towards her. It seems to be really curious about her in general.

“Can I touch you?” She reaches out.

It doesn’t react.

“I know this is sudden, but do you wa-”

ZAP! There’s a loud crack and a flash of light.

Skin and hair is a pretty good insulator where it comes to electric shocks, up to a certain level, but she's got what is supposedly metal potentially running into her shoulder/leg sockets, which is no good. Not sure what standing in sand might do, either. At least she has anime physics on her side.

And thanks. I'm reasonably fond of pizza but IIRC you're on the young side.

I've been thinking. Laki says that the strong take what they want. I think her own statement is proof that she's wrong. She flubbed it at the games and ran instead of facing it. She's been running ever since. The whole "Take what I want because I'm strong" is further proof that she never stopped running. She's not taking what she wants, she's hiding from her own weakness.

We obviously shouldn't bring it up without a reason, but I think we should. Laki has shown a number of times how she's just wandering in her own life just to waste time. If she was really "taking what she wanted" she would be striving towards some goal, really any goal. As it stands now she's just plunged herself in to hedonistic behavior. She needs to confront her problems. She had a vision of her home changing in a way that scares her, I'm interested in seeing Laki actually doing something in regard to that fear. Heck it could even put her on the path to finding a goal worth pursuing again.

Man, I wanted to see how that conversation went between Hana and Val. Or between Hana and Keira for that matter.

It's always fun to get in their heads and see what they think about us though. Especially seeing just how different the impressions we've made are.

As for Janebin... her latest outburst has me curious as to her previous love life. Whatever it is, it'll be nice to get to see what she thinks of us and what she's into. And who.

I'm still holding out a small amount of hope for asexual Jane, who uses sex as a weapon like darkest timeline Kat. But could learn to chill in a committed relationship.

>>

I agree, I have been on the Laki train since the start but that was mostly based on physical appearance, as characterization is developing I actually find myself getting on board the Hana train.

That last altercation lowered my opinion of Laki a bit, though if some shit goes down with her then things could swing in her favor again. The race is close.

I know I gave you shit for being late, but it was well worth the wait.

The perspective changes (lewdbin or otherwise) are my favorite parts of your quests, just to see what other characters think of each other. I remember last quest where it felt like Robin was just as much the main character as Kat. It seems like you can develop multiple characters better than some authors can develop one.

Jane is clearly absolutely obsessed with herb, and our cupboard interaction might have changed it from competition and ego, to something a little more lewd, she's paranoid about what he's planning to do with all these girls, and eventually her, what if a part of her wants it? she might be torn, horny, scared, and prideful about the idea of letting herb carry out his plan with her all while doing "reconnaissance" on him.I was surprised she wears lacy underwear, her quietly watching him through the door, her past and how she got giddy with her pokemon after the fire temple, clearly there's alot more to her character and the way she acts is a front to hide what she really thinks and feels, I'm really looking forward to her character development and opening up to herb.

Really looking forward to the jane lewdbin, regardless of what thread we take, the obsession and passion of jane towards herb should make it a really great read

He's already got laki, and a priestess wrapped around his finger, diabolical
>>
>>1188037
>>1188028
Also, val's perfect guy would be a muscley sexually confident herb, herb wants to be more confident and physically attractive and fit. We should ask laki to be our personal trainer, it'll fulfil all those goals and in the process we can get to know her better, help her work through that regret and self hatred she's over compensating for, and will probably lead to more lewdness
>>
>>1188069
I like the way you think. Getting closer to Valerie while helping Laki at the same time sounds good.
>>
>>1188069
Laki as personal trainer does seem like a good idea, I can't vote but this has my support.
Also I'd be lying if I said I don't want Herb to lewd all the girls. I have this idea for a non cannon bin I may or may not write.
>>
>>1188069
Sounds like a good idea for now.
>>
You know, Herb/Hana might be fun, but after that bin, I kind of want to see Hana/Val taken up a notch.

Like, actually see that conversation where Val brings up riding her pillow and seeing Hana fingering herself and see where it goes.
>>
>>1188427
Agreed, would be a fun conversation
>>
>>1188427
Yes please.

I think that little fight gave us some good insight into Laki's thoughts. The whole view on strength feels like a coping mechanism to me. If she wasn't strong enough then it makes sense what happened to her at the games. I think it's sort a warped view, but something Herb might be able to help with in time. What I'm most concerned with is Laki hurting Val emotionally, but the bin proves Val wants some Laki, so hopefully things turn out alright. I'm pretty convinced Laki's view on sex is gonna hurt Val regardless of mutual attraction.

Good bin, as for Jane, I'd like to see her trying to min/max her scheduled not! date with herb, she starts out thinking of various contingencies and how to one-up him but ends up just planning out a nice date. The she starts making plans for if herb somehow tries to move the date to intimacy, will she just refuse? No, this is a chance to prove once and for all what kind of man he is! Then she starts thinking things like: Where is she going to find condoms in his size? Can she maintain control during the act? What if he somehow takes the lead?
cue fantasy of her vision of mastermind Herb having his way with her or something like that.
then she panics and wonders if these fantasies were part of his plan all along and then she resolves to not get beaten by his over-sized pants-snake and resolves to "practice"

...that is probably way too elaborate and poorly explained, ah well maybe you can get something out of it.
>>
>>1189617
I like your kind of insanity, Anon.
>>
>>1189642
This is... Actually pretty interesting... Huh.
>>
>>1189617
>resolves to not get beaten

I hate it when sex is talked about like it's inherintly competitive, rather than cooperative. It's not a healthy attitude. It does sound like the sort of thing Jane would think though. And that's sad.
>>
>>1189763
yeah that's what I figured, and Jane views almost everything as a competition it seems so... also; if we went the Jane route it'd be Herbs job to fix that sad viewpoint. Which I'd like to think is a plus since Herbs whole thing is nurturing and caring for people.
>>
>>1189775
So who needs to be fixed and who just needs a friend to be there for them?
>>
>>1189782
Polu?
>>
>>1189782
the latter can help with the former.
that said people that need "fixing"
Laki (general power attitude, the whole olympics debacle, self image stuff)
Hana (her sense of self-worth/confidence needs a boost)
Jane (needs a good deal of help of varying sorts mostly for that over-competitiveness)
Friending would be:
Val
Keira
Polu
Also, I've never liked it when people say they "just" need a friend to be there, having a friend is a big deal when you don't have many.
>>
>>1189801
I just meant compared to borderline therapy sessions. Obviously friends are a big deal.
>>
>>1189805
ah ok.
>>
>>1189801
>Polu
Don't forget that Polu (and presumably the other Kontote) has some sort of association with a less savory form of spirit magic than Keira's.

We did have a bunch of opportunities to ask the other islanders about it, but we wisely refused for fear of outing Polu. Still, we should use the internet or the ancient art of visiting a library to learn about it without bringing up questions about why we want to know.
>>
>>1185883
I think we should just ask her to show us how to pole-vault, or at the very least ask her where she learned it.

It seems like such a niche thing, I'm interested and I want to see if she genuinely enjoys the subject.

Even if she doesn't, just asking those questions could be a real good springboard into some other juicer topics.
>>
>>1190333
Well I think her real problem is that she has allowed herself to become unambitious. Pole vaulting again won't necessarily fix that unless she's committing to a goal by doing so. Again, I think we should ask her what she wants. We know what we want: to make friends, explore our new home, and grow as a person. We're actually doing exactly what we want. But what's Laki's goal?
>>
>>1190506
I'm not saying that pole-vaulting is in any way a solution, what I'm saying is that talking about it could be interesting and open up some doors to speaking about her past.

I don't actually think she has a problem or necessarily needs to be ambitious, or even have a real goal for that matter. I just want her to not have to carry that fucking baggage so she can move on.
>>
>>1190506
I think the place to start is with this kind of idea. I think we should seriously ask what Laki wants to do with PokeAdventure. If she gives us another answer like she's just doing this to keep from getting hassled, Herb has to confront her. Herbs go to say something to Laki like she needs to make the most of her adventure because whether she knows it or not she's making all these friends and we want to help her with whatever she wants to do, but she has to figure out what that is. Pizzanon was exactly right in that her lack of a goal is making Laki unambitious and this could be the first step to drilling down into why that is.
>>
I kinda want Herb to be super tolerant to alcohol and unaffected by hangovers.
And maybe for dark Herb to come out when he's drunk but instead of uncoordinated he becomes suave as fuck.
>>
>>1191933
Dark Herb is litterally just Dice: he gets drunken-style cooking and gets bitey with his friends.

I think if he became suave, it wouldn't be from the addition of any wit or tact. Rather, he loses some of his filter. This allows him to speak his feelings freely that he'd normally be too embarrassed to say. Thing is, those thoughts are almost exclusively pretty pure and sweet.

Hana/Val

"Did I ever *hic* Did I ever tell you how proud I am of you? You're really pu- putting yourself out there in the world and that's hard. That's soooooo *hic* so hard. But you do it. I'm pr-proud of you."

Jane

"You're scary. You know that? You always know just what to do and I'm always so losht. You got here and you fit right in, but everyone'sh tryna- tryna tesht me. I'm jealoush."

Laki

"YOU'RE MY BEEEEEST FRIIIEEEND!"

Polu

"How are you so cool all the ti- all time? Huh? I bet girls are all over you, with your cute muscles and buff face. Hey! Hey. I, hah, I challenge you to a staring contest."

Keira

"Hey. You worry too much. Maybe- maybe it's 'cause of your job's so serious. You always worry that I *hic* that I'm gonna think you're weird and different 'cause you're a holy vessel and I'm Hao- Haojin. But everyone's weird and different! Nobody's got the same life. You need to stop worryin' what I think of ya' 'cause even when things are weird between us I know you've got a good h- *hic* a good *hic* a good heart. Right here. Here. Yeah."

Older sister

"I love my new friends, but I miss everyone too. I wanna go visit the daycare again soon. Everything's changing so fast. I wanna go back where I'm from 'cause I'm tryna figure out where I'm going."
>>
>>1192012
I think you left something out;

Everyone including Polu

"Why're you all sho damn *hic* hot? I just wanna take you and *hic* an- *hic* a-and *hic* ...ah, you know"
>>
>>1192465
Good catch. I also couldn't think of any for Gobble/Bella/Mace. Dice and Dark Herb would bite each other back and forth.
>>
>>1192465
"I wanna [hic] just take you out behind that bush and hold your hand"
>>
>>1193299
Dark Herb is a monster than can't be let out.
