You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and the call you were expecting didn't take long. You've found yourself before the Central 46 for what feels like the millionth time this week, and there are no doubts as to the real reason for your presence here.

As soon as you're given the opportunity, you speak your mind. “Why am I here?”

“You know full well why you're here,” one of the counselors replies.

“It's not to testify about Kusaka,” you muse aloud, laying out your reasoning in full. Just so that anyone deluded enough to still think you can't see through their bullshit is on the same page. “I doubt he took much convincing to tell you everything about himself and his motivations, and you probably already confirmed his testimony with Captains Shihōin and Urahara. So that leaves the incident with the Ōin.”

“Correct,” the man confirms.

“Then why am I here?” you repeat, glaring straight at the screen in front of him, as if intending to bore through it with your gaze. You can sense him shift uncomfortably under the pressure.

“You abused a divine artifact when you activated and by all accounts used the Ōin. Consider yourself fortunate we were persuaded by some of our colleagues to hear your words on the subject before sentencing.”

“Yes, I accidentally cut the Ōin when one of Kusaka's arrancar companions got in my way. I was aiming for his arm,” you recount. “An embarrassment, really, I'm not used to my strikes missing the mark like that.”

“So you claim it was an accident? Then why did you go on to use its power?”

“The Ōin is dangerous,” you insist. “It gave me both the power to reshape reality itself, and an overwhelming desire to use that power. And it bears repeating that I rejected the Ōin and returned it to the Shihōin clan of my own choice.”

“And why? What purpose did that serve you?”

“It's better this way for all of the people I care about, and to those I'm responsible for,” you reply stoically. “Which serves your goals in the end too, if your goals really are balance and stability.”

Having experienced the Ōin firsthand, i'm warning you that it's power is far too great, and intoxicating, to allow it's existence. If one of our enemies, of which soul society has many, were to get their hands on it... not a single one of us, myself included would be able to stop them. There is no reason for such an insanely dangerous item to exist. Just imagine for a moment what would happen if Aizen were to get his hands on it, when Yoruichi and i together have trouble matching his power while under the handicap that is his sword. We'd be fucked.

So long as it still exists, they WILL come for it, just as they did this time, when our guard is down, when we least expect it.

or something like that, i'm not a writer

In retrospect, I kinda wish we had used our brief time with unlimited power to open a portal underneath Nel's minions. I'm willing to bet whatever trap Aizen has used them for did not anticipate us brute forcing with the Oin.
>>
>>1173378
That's a grave overstep in terms of the Ōin use. dealing with kusaka via extravagant overkill of dismantling of his spiritual power and then summoning 2 arrancar afterwards? That's fucking shady man.

So, if Shunsui is still unconscious, has Riku not yet divulged that whole fabric of Soul Society's reality overlapping with the mortal realm and Hell?

And could the Ōin help mend that anomaly?

“In light of my experience, I'd like to do something I never thought I'd have cause to,” you sigh, rubbing the back of your neck in disbelief at what you're about to say next .”I'd like to formally request something.”

Yoruichi's father replies first, his tone one of amusement. “Why, Captain Kusajishi. This is most irregular coming from you. I think I speak for the majority when I say this is so stunning an event as to warrant our consideration.”

“I'd like permission to assist Captain Shihōin in destroying the Ōin,” you tell him with a self-conscious bow. “Please. We can use the Shihōin shield, it was made for this sort of necessity.”

“Some would call that blasphemy,” one of the counselors chides you, “but I suppose we cannot expect one so young as yourself to know the history of such objects and their value.”

“Even if you used a hydrogen bomb in a ceremony one day a year,” you growl defiantly, “would you want to leave it in your basement the other three hundred and sixty four days? Because the continued existence of the Ōin threatens us all. And not one of you could use it... hell, by my own testimony I can't use it safely! So what purpose does it have that justifies the risk?”

“Even if we could agree,” the elder Shihōin sighs behind his screen, “how can you be sure the shield would work on a divine artifact?”

“You have a Captain whose zanpakuto is divine in origin,” you explain, acutely aware of Tenkotsuki's physical absence. How do your peers get through years not carrying their weapons? It's maddening! You might as well be walking around naked!

“I think we should consider this,” the woman you presume to be a Shiba representative admits, her voice betraying advanced age. “Never before has this august council of the supposed 'wise' held such unreasonable animosity towards a specific Captain.”

“I of course can serve as a character witness,” Sasakibe's voice adds from behind another panel marked with the symbol of the Gotei 13, absent any numbering. “It is my opinion that if Captain Kusajishi feels the Ōin presents an unacceptable threat to the Seireitei, her proposal of destroying it should at least be put to a vote.”

“I believe that makes the minimum requirement for advancing an item,” Yoruichi's father muses. “Very interesting... so, all in favor of destroying the Ōin permanently?”

A series of wooden paddles are raised from behind the screens: a quick count shows twenty-seven in all, well more than half. Three of those are from the highest row of members present, representing the main clans: Shihōin and Shiba for certain, and likely Kuchiki as well.

“All opposed?”

Only twelve paddles are raised. Which is good news, seeing as that makes the vote more than two to one in your favor. Assuming that's drawn along a partisan line representing not the issue at hand but your own standings here, that's hopeful. However it also means that seven present cast no vote, their reasons a mystery to all but themselves.

“The motion carries then,” your father in law declares. “Now, there is one further point of order: the question of these... planar convergences, as Captain Urahara described them.”

Ah, so he did send the message along to the Central 46 despite what happened to Shunsui. And of course since you're here they're going to press you on the issue.

“And what would you have me say?” you shrug. “Soul Society is expanding. That much is self-evident.”

“Not even Urahara knows why what he's observed is happening,” you explain calmly. “Normally I'd be all for making things up as I go, but this feels like it would be way too easy to make things worse by mistake.”

“And so what would you have us do?” one of the faceless counselors asks bitterly.

“For now, wait and see,” you shrug. “I do however have a personal contact I could follow up with... and in fact, I've been meaning to get back to her anyway. Problem is you're not going to like it.”

“And why would that be?” your father in law asks.

“Because my contact is Artemis,” you frown, hearing the expected muttering between the assembled group. “See? Told you that you wouldn't like it, and I can't imagine the Royal Guard would be happy either.”

“And why would we agree to such an absurd request?” a voice demands.

“Because I'd be doing Artemis a favor, and the Valhallans already owe us a favor,” you explain. “If I can determine that this is a global phenomenon than it means we're all in the same position, and add to that a sense of mutual debt towards each other? That's a good way to start genuine cooperation.”

“And what if some of us don't want to cooperate?”

“Then some of us aren't very smart,” you roll your eyes. “It's said that if the Captains of the Gotei 13 are divided, the Seireitei is powerless. If its Captains are united however it's said that we're unstoppable... why should that be less true of the spiritual realms?”

“You have a definite point,” the Shiba representative admits. “I would be inclined to call a vote. Do I have the support to do so?”

Again, another vote is held. This time the split is thirty to sixteen in your favor, officially approving your trip to Valhalla as well as giving you more information about how the Central 46 is currently split... all of those who voted for or against you the last time voted the same way this time.

“Take great care, Captain Kusajishi,” the elderly Shiba advises you “This is an unusual situation, and many more eyes than ours will be watching you carefully. You are excused.”

Outside the meeting hall, Yoruichi hands you Tenkotsuki and Kobara no Tachi. “So how'd it go?”

“About the same as it always does.”

“I see,” Yoruichi chuckles to herself. “So you have a plan for what to do next, I take it?”

“Never,” you shrug.

“Less of a plan, more of a to-do list,” you correct yourself. “We have permission to destroy the Ōin, so that should probably happen sooner rather than later. I also want to send a message to Lady Artemis inviting her to speak with us here in the Seireitei... which requires following the appropriate diplomatic channels and waiting for a response. I may have also promised to spar with Neliel, so it would be rude to keep her waiting.”

“Sounds like a full schedule,” Yoruichi nods. “I'll arrange a suitable transport arrangement for the Ōin and we'll destroy it on your Division's grounds... unless you have any objections?”

You shake your head. “Just think we should get Kaoru to erect a barrier. I may need to borrow some of Tenkotsuki's power to counter the Ōin's shinreiryoku.”

“Fair enough.”

It takes about an hour for all the required participants to come together, by which point Tenkotsuki has briefed you on the details.

“You will need to use our Bankai to do this task,” she informs you without any sense of hesitation or doubt. “Though with our power, and the Shihōin sheild being the appropriate tool, this damnable seal should stand no chance. As for the proper diplomatic channels, I believe protocol demands that we send missives to the Royal Guard first and foremost. They will form an honor guard, more as a formality than anything else, and make other preparations for the arrival of Lady Artemis. As she is a deity, your presence as well as that of Tenri will be required through the duration of her stay.”

“Wow, is that all?” you sigh.

“You should remain in your dual-released state as much as is possible,” she continues. “This will make both your request and her response seem more legitimate to any critics in either of our respective camps.”

“What sort of bureaucratic bullshit is that?” Rosa grumbles.

“Politics has a certain artistry to it,” Tenkotsuki counters. “A sensitivity to opinion, and a knowledge of how best to shape it.”

Yoruichi eventually arrives with a crowd of her own Onmitsukidō, which you suspect she hand-picked for the assignment. Black-masked men and women of no rank, whose only loyalty is to the mission set forth for them by the Executive Commander. They take up positions overlooking the central courtyard as Kaoru watches uneasily.

“Never gotten used to that, have you?” Yoruichi asks her with a smirk. “Can't say I blame you.

“I'll raise the barrier now,” Kaoru nods, focusing now on her own task as Yoruichi draws her sword.

“Bankai...”

Both you and your wife enter Bankai simultaneously, with your appearance transforming appropriately and Yoruichi using Shōsōtō to reproduce her clan's unique tool for destroying troublesome artifacts. Cables wrap around the small box, ludicrous considering the object's small size but regardless an important part of the process. Then, after placing your blades against the front of the shield in the two grooves carved deep into the wood for them, you channel your reiatsu into the device.

“It's fighting back!” Yoruichi shouts in surprise as the glow of your own reiatsu is pushed back towards you with a pulse of shinreiryoku. “I've never seen this before!”

Almost instinctively you act just as quickly to absorb the pulse, which the Ōin must have released to protect itself. Whether it was a conscious measure or not, it wasn't nearly enough. You feel a little stronger, just a little more confident and dangerous now than before, and the reishi making up the Ōin begins to disintegrate.

“You absorbed some of it?” Yoruichi asks, equally amused and horrified. “Well, it worked at least... and it seems that between all this fuss you've grown a bit stronger.”

“Indeed,” Tenkotsuki agrees. “What it amounts to I cannot say, however that was... significant.”

“Is there any chance of me going, well, crazy because of it?”

“I doubt it,” your zanpakuto replies, seemingly unworried. “Unlike when you broke the Ōin the first time I was able to truly subsume the reiryoku it released rather than being overwhelmed by it. So while the effect is vastly less than before, it will be manageable.”

“She says she has it under control,” you tell your wife as she glances at you in confusion.

“Good to hear,” Yoruichi nods. “So... I guess that's it?”

“I'm going to go get the ball rolling with Artemis,” you announce. “Kaoru, you might want to stay here for what's going to happen afterwards.”

“I think I see where that's going,” she nods. “I'll go tell her.”

“I should return to the Division headquarters and file a statement with my clan's elders,” Yoruichi yawns, sheathing Shōsōtō and walking away. “You have fun now.”

Once in your office, you seat yourself behind the desk and put pen to a couple of forms Rangiku left for you. “Tenri, please send a message to the Royal Guard. I'd like to have Lady Artemis Lygodesma over as a guest, preferably some time soon.”

“Artemis?” Tenri asks, awed at the name-dropping. “Here? Do you believe that wise, ma'am?”

“Maybe not,” you shake your head. “But I need answers, and if the answers are as bad as I fear they may be we'll need grounds for cooperation between the Soul Society and the other spiritual realms. And having officially opened dialogue and traded favors is as good a place to start as any.”

“I see,” the part-divine nods, her expression thoughtful despite her unusual, alien eyes. “Then I shall convey your message to Lady Shutara, if you have no objections of course.”

“That's fine. I know you're not overly fond of the Monk and Thug-Hair.”

“Thank you, ma'am.”

With that issue sorted and no immediate response in sight, you set off to find Neliel. As it happens she and Halibel are together, with Kaoru standing nearby drinking a small cup of hot tea. The two arrancar are reading the same book... Orwell? Really, Halibel?

“I don't understand!” Neliel protests. “Why does the author feel the need to write so much in this infernal 'newspeak', anyway?”

“It is part of his main point,” Halibel sighs, setting the book aside. “After the revolution the party enforced its ideology in such a way as to ensure its own reproduction. This included reducing vocabulary in such a way that suited the party, and discouraged the sharing of more complex, individualistic thoughts.”

“I guess that makes sense?” Neliel muses, seeming to still miss the central point. “Captain Kusajishi? I see, so you're here for the promised sparring match. I'm sorry that things got so complicated. Is the situation resolved?”

“The Head Captain is still recovering, and I don't know personally what's going to be done with the criminal responsible for this whole mess, and we've been left with two 'guests' who I'm sure you're aware of,” you recount the results of the brief conflict for Halibel and Neliel. “But the crisis has been averted, and so my job's really been done. I just stop the messes from getting any worse, other people have to clean it up.”

“That's... reassuring,” Neliel frowns, clearly having taken issue with at least one of those statements... probably your lack of concern for Kusaka's fate. In all honesty, the man attacked a Captain. If he's still alive he's a dead man walking, and the laws of the Seireitei are absolutely clear in this regard. His guilt is beyond doubt.

The Onmitsukidō-trained half of your brain tells you that the outcome is clear, that it's rational, and that at least within the Seireitei's current system of governance it's lawful. It's down to Yoruichi to ensure that proper practice is observed.

So you simply shrug. “I trust that Yoruichi can see to it. Kusaka will be dealt with according to the laws of the Seireitei, which is the best I could offer him anyway even if I did feel personally obligated.”

“Well, I guess you have your affairs in hand,” Neliel admits. “So, how do you want to do this?”

“Same conditions as when I did this with Starrk and Halibel,” you insist firmly. “I want us both to get a feel for one another, so we'll take it slow. Work our way up to our respective full powers.”

“You're serious about this, aren't you?” Neliel wonders aloud. “Under Aizen it was normal for each of us to hide as much of our abilities from each other as possible.”

“You're not working under Aizen anymore,” you remind her. “I expect those who fight under me and at my side to be aware of one another's skills. Otherwise how can we coordinate if we have to, or even trust each other?”

“Trust...” Neliel repeats it like it's a foreign concept. “I see. If it's a matter of trust, then I suppose I can't disagree with your terms. After all you know much more about trust than I do.”

“Come on, let's not get all depressing about it,” you grumble. “Follow me. Kaoru, please erect a barrier around us.”

“You want to do this in public?” Neliel muses. “In front of everyone?”

Also worth mentioning is that sharing abilities also allows for you to learn techniques that somebody else invented. There's a few sondo and cero techniques that are in common usage for example.

Why can't we have Roza do one and Riku do another? Or even with two minds it doesn't work?

Actually, good point.
Rosa has used quincy techniques independently to support us in the past.

Tenkotsuki could handle the shunpo, rosa the hirenkyaku, and we could personally do the sonido.
Maybe all at once.

“Doing this out in the open is just better,” you shrug. “Much less for people to get paranoid about that way, and it sends a positive message. Trust can only exist where there's openness.”

“I see,” Neliel nods her head before turning to face you. “My name is Neliel Tu Odelschwank. Let us have a fair fight.”

“And I am Ninth Division Captain Kisajishi Riku, of the noble Shiba clan,” you respond to her challenge. “I look forward to getting to know you.”

You stand opposite the green-haired arrancar at the center of your Division's open yards, surrounded by maples that have begun to turn bright red and orange all around and by the members of your Division who aren't too busy to watch from the other side of Kaoru's barrier. In a flash, swords are drawn.

She's stronger than you are, and at least in terms of the way her body moves she's faster too. Your hirenkyaku allow you to maintain proper spacing however, as her sonido aren't quick enough to outpace you. Her sword meets with yours, and as momentum stalls she does something unusual: she kicks off and sweeps wide with a kick, moving her entire body around the space in front of you in an impressive acrobatic maneuver. She very nearly knocks you out with that attack, though you manage to hold your own by constantly evading.

“Interesting,” you muse as you back away from her. “Your style makes unusual use of space.”

“So you're observing that carefully,” Neliel replies, eyeing you carefully. “I shall have to do the same.”

“Shunkō!” you shout, using the pinnacle of hakuda technique to close the gap in raw power. Now that you're aware of what Nel's up to, you're careful to angle Tenkotsuki's edge so that Neliel's blade never binds against her, instead sliding off to one side or the other each time. This lets you show off your own technique, using much faster and intensely-practiced strikes with fists, elbows, and knees alongside fairly basic kenjutsu.

Now it's Nel's turn to be impressed. “Your strikes are far more direct, and make better use of that short sword of yours. It's clear that you've spent a lot of time training to integrate swordsmanship and martial arts.”

“You haven't seen anything yet,” you smirk. “Prohibit: Tenkotsuki!”

Taken aback by the lack of any significant outward change, Neliel seems to conclude that you've set up some sort of trap and that the best way to deal with that would be to spring it. Instead of backing off, she grows more aggressive.

Neliel's fighting style reminds me of a zoner or a hit-run style fighter, making use of an open flank when she stalls the momentum. Like Cavalry. If the charging horse doesn't run you down, the swordsman with the pike or sabre would score a sweep at your flank when it diverts it's direction and goes around you during it's pass.

You know exactly how to proceed from here. Neliel swings her sword at you and meets Tenkotsuki''s blade, then tries to kick at you again only to find your foot slammed into her ankle. Then, with a momentary opening, you take aim with your left palm.

“Shakkahō!”

The mid-level kidō isn't enough to cause serious harm, but it's more than enough to knock Neliel backwards and send her rolling across the ground. She abruptly disappears, having used sonido off one foot even as she was rolling to try and get behind you. Your elbow finds her wrist, and your left fist finds her ribs a moment later. Thanks to shunkō she obviously feels the shot, and takes a moment to collect herself.

“You're strong,” she muses, one hand resting against her bruised ribcage. “I wasn't aware you shinigami could use such power so quickly... I was under the impression kidō took time to cast.”

“Not when Tenkotsuki and I do it,” you explain.

“I see, so your zanpakuto actively helps in your casting kidō as well as fitting flawlessly into your hakuda style,” she realizes. “Very subtle... I'm afraid I don't have anything to quite match it in terms of subtlety, though I must also wonder about your other zanpakuto. Do you intend not to use it?”

“No,” you shake your head, giving Kobara no Tachi a pat as you do. “This sword is my own rage personified, and her ability is particularly vicious. She'd be the first to say she has no place in a fight like this.”

“How did you come by such a blade?” she asks.

“I was once able to hollowfy as a result of Aizen's experiments. I forged that hollow power into a second zanpakuto,” you explain. “Now you know my swords, it's time you showed me yours.”

“Are you sure?”

You nod sternly. “I want to see your resurreccion, even if I can't show you mine safely.”

“I see,” she muses. “Very well, but do not be surprised if my released form is too much for you to handle with your current level of power.”

Nel holds her zanpakuto out in front of her parallel to the ground before calling on it. “Declare: Gamuza!”

When the smoke clears, you're faced with what almost looks like a new opponent entirely. A centaur with curve horns stands before you with a heavy lance in her hand, staring you down appraisingly. “This is my true form, Captain Kusajishi.”

“And how does this form differ?” you ask.

“As I said before, it's nothing so subtle as your skills,” she admits. “But I do have something on my side.”

After rearing up to turn and face you head on, she charges. She tucks her lance under one arm and uses sonido... with all four legs hammering against the ground. Her linear speed is astounding, so fast that you can barely react to it with hirenkyaku of your own. She overshoots, colliding with the barrier erected by your adoptive sister and shattering it. Kaoru scrambles to repair the damage and reinforce her spell, while Neliel takes a moment.

“What I have in this form is speed, strength, and focus,” she declares. “Simple, but effective.”

She may not have connected with that blow, but if she had the results would've been ugly. And you somehow doubt her assertion that there's nothing subtle to her resurreccion... if you can anticipate anything from here on out, it's that Neliel has plenty of ways to make sure that lance of hers connects.

This may be harder than you gave her credit for.

So, thoughts on how to counter Nel:
1. That mirror Danku spell that causes anyone who charges into it to come out the other direction. The surprise should let us land some good blows
2. Back to the basics: our original fighting style relied heavily on us casting spells through our blade, but as we got stronger we've stopped doing that for some reason. I see no reason not to try again.
3. Use Seppa to turn the stone to sand and watch her flounder.
>>
>>1175545
She might have trouble turning or changing direction at high speed, leaving her open to counters if you can dodge
>>
>>1175610

That's a problem with both equines and trucks, they have trouble turning at high speeds.
>>
>>1175545
>>1175610
>>1176003
There's also the matter of space. Nel's forte basically amounts to Cavalry charges, but she needs the space and start up in order to be effective.
Setting up obstacles that deter or hinder her like Caltrops or even a field of obstacles/blocks would work wonders on dealing with her fighting capability and mobility as she needs to actively maneuver around them or divert their direction.
But then again it's a sparring session. we should at least hold back.
>>
>>1176912
The more interesting question is how we help her improve. My personal suggestion would be to encourage her to learn the Mashiro Super Cero. Silly name aside, the kick based Cero would help her out with her martial arts and give her another option in combat.
>>
>>1176930
Her Current flaws in fighting style:
>Neliel seems to favor the classic cavalry charge and uses that as her only tactic.
>trouble turning or changing direction at high speed.
>That charge has a huge tell in the windup. The actual charge, not so much, but the tell is enough to give Riku enough time to dodge or even allow a grazing hit.
>I'd reckon she can't control her speed, process how fast she's going, or even slow down after the pass.
>She has to rely on obstacles to break her speed. (case in point: ramming into Kaoru's barrier and breaking it just to stop)
>Her charge is high risk high reward.
>She needs space, distance, and a clear line to the target.
>She's a dead goat-centaur-lady if someone manages to get to her flank or mount her.
>Unsure if Lance returns to Neliel after she throws it.
What we can teach her:
>we could teach her the merit of the hit & run style tactics of mounted combat the mongolians employed.
>Strafing the enemy and circling it from a distance taking potshots with ceros fired from the lance can heavily wound the enemy psychologically and tempt them to make mistakes.
>harassing the enemy at a distance has it's merits.
>Lance charges are reserved for when you have a clear shot as a finisher.
>Stay as a mobile target. Her horse body can boast incredible long-distance mobility.
>Air walking lets her be "Airborne Cavalry".
>Set a speed limit so you can retain your turning agility.
>Find a way to "Protect your flank".

>Teaching Neliel social philosophy: Amusing or frustrating?
>Why Orwell?
>Which of George Orwell's books were you reading with Nel? 1984? If it was 1984, then it might be a bit much for the goat-girl. She's a beginner in philosophy whereas you got approx. 100~ years of luxury to read up on the philosophical thoughts or mortal men. Try a picture book version of "The Animal Farm". It's got animals (including a goat), and Neliel might understand it better because there's a goat in it.

To Yin and/or Yang:

What you've managed to gather from this brief exchange is that Neliel's released form gives her incredible linear speed and momentum, but similar to a charging horse and rider her control over that momentum is more limited. While it'd be foolish to assume she hasn't found some sort of workaround for this, the basic property seems like it'll always be a vulnerability. If you dodge her attacks, you'll always have a brief opening.

There are other possibilities as well though, such as depriving her of her footing or placing obstacles in her way. Kaoru's barrier seemed to hold decently well, and of course Tenkotsuki always has a bag of situational tricks to draw from.

>Use Seppa to try and bog her down.

Modified Tsuriboshi (net like kido, if I recall correctly), or Danku (lol wall) if it's hard to anticipate where she'd come from. I mean, she could still jump or hold herself aloft midair to counter Seppa.

She leaves herself open on the charge, and in responding to her last charge after she surprised you with it you've demonstrated that you're still just a tiny bit fleeter of foot than she is even if your hand speed can't quite keep up as easily.

It's then that you hatch your plan.

“I see,” you nod, gesturing to Neliel with your free hand. “Let's try that attack again, shall we?”

“I don't see how this isn't a trap,” Neliel sighs, stamping one hoof against the gravel. “But that being said, I want to see what you came up with in so short an amount of time. So I'll oblige you, just this once.”

As she readies her lance, you dig your back foot just a little deeper in.

“Here I come,” she frowns at you from the other end of her lance. “I hope you know what you're doing.”

“Me too,” you grin as she comes at you a second time. You can't see her eyes when she makes contact with your doppelganger, but you do feel her reiatsu briefly waver in concern as you slide past her with a hirenkyaku and loop a kidō chain around her front legs in one fluid movement. With a mighty burst of reiatsu of your own you dig in your feet and pull as hard on the chain as you can.

A sickening pop and a wave of pain tells you that you've just dislocated your left arm, while Neliel flips into the air and comes down on her face at speed, sliding headfirst into the kidō barrier. To your slight surprise she's quick to rise back to her four feet, but she does waver somewhat. Her face is cut in a few places, and is red from more than the force of the impact. Then she sees your arm hanging at a weird angle.

“Are you okay?” she asks.

With a loud, prolonged groan of exertion you flex your muscles, eventually using their motion to torque your own humerus back into its home where your natural healing ability can get to work repairing the tendons.

Neliel's eyes are left wide in disbelief. “Did you... by flexing...”

“Yeah,” you grunt, taking a moment to test your arm's range of motion. “Damn, it's like trying to derail a freight train. Note to self, bad idea.”

“I am getting a good feel for your abilities though” you admit, cracking your neck to relieve the built-up stress there. “Ah, that was a good one. Anyway, you seem like a mostly physical fighter. That right?”

“For the most part,” Neliel nods, lowering the point of her lance. “Though I do have a few tricks I haven't shown you yet.”

“Care to talk about them?” you ask. “I really don't see any more need to fight it out.”

“My saliva has healing properties,” Neliel explains, now resting her lance against one shoulder as she walks closer to you. “I can also swallow a cero, add my own energy to it, and spit it back out. It's a technique called Cero Doble.”

“Really?” you ask, honestly surprised to hear she can do things like that. “Something to do with goats eating everything in sight, maybe?”

Neliel offers a grin and a shrug. “Never could figure out how my abilities relate to each other. Maybe it really is that simple.”

“Can you use that Cero Doble thing on kidō?” you wonder aloud.

Nel pauses. “I have no idea. Maybe?”

“We should try it some time,” you suggest. “Maybe not today though, I'm afraid I have other things that need to get done today.”

“You seem busy most of the time.”

“Occupational hazard.”

“Well then,” Neliel muses as she seals her sword and morphs her lower body back into that of a human. It's rather distracting while it's going on, and Nel must have noticed because she waits to finish her sentence until the process is complete. “You possess a Bankai as well, correct?”

“Yes,” you nod. “I'll let you experience it at some point. It uses divine power to make it harder, if not impossible for anyone within range to use kidō or anything similar like cero. Any external manifestation of reitsu is crushed, because Tenkotsuki doesn't appreciate being challenged with such things.”

“Your zanpakuto sounds like a pain,” she replies. “How do you shinigami deal with having another personality stuck inside you? Our zanpakuto are silent.”

“It's easy once you learn to like them,” you insist. “Tenkotsuki is my pride, and though not a positive emotion Rosa is useful as my rage. They're a part of my life the way all zanpakuto are for their wielders.”

“We all like to think ours is the best, but with mine that sentiment may be accurate.”

“I see,” Neliel nods. “This has been most enlightening, Captain. I believe that you are a person I can have some faith in, and respect towards. So thank you.”

“Good to hear,” you nod. “Say... between me and Aizen...”

Nel shakes her head. “I cannot say for sure. But what I do know is that you are a better person, and that your company respects you. That may well make all the difference in the end.”

Aside from Cero Tirador, cero traición, and cero traición, is Riku able to fire regular ceros or different flavored ceros (patented by Apacci) when Kobara no Tachi is released? Like regular ceros seem like a such a intrinsic skill for all arancar/vizards/hollows that they can't perform their own unique cero-flavored skill without knowing how to fire a regular cero.
>>
>>1184632
I think that changed when Riku forged her inner hollow into a asauchi, but besides that we have access to kido that performs a similar role anyway.
>>
>>1184632
She could, but as >>1184651 suggested Riku has other options. The more unusual and situational types of cero she has access to are the only ones that are really that useful.

Questions:
>Of the Bestias, Apacci has her many experimental patents of different flavored cero in kido imitation, Sun Sung has a special ability she keeps to herself that makes her useful. So what's makes Mila Rose stand apart from her 2 other Sororities?
>So how useful are the other ceros that Riku can use while in Kobara no Tachi's Shikai release? cero traición is a given because it burns a target from the inside out like napalm. Estgmas Reversion lets us cast kido through the blood to create a devestating kido flavored claymore effect whenever an enemy lands a hit that draws blood but I haven't seen good use of it outside of channeling healing spells through the blood. But I haven't seen any sign of Riku using Cero Tirador at all. What advantages does Cero Tirador have over the other kido spells that we learned? And what's keeping Riku/Rosa from actively using what is practically a railgun sniper rifle in the field?

Cero Tirador offers superior range and penetration over a normal cero, but takes long enough that it gives a faster opponent a chance to counterattack.
>>
>>1189335
>Superior Range and penetration
Huh I was under the impression that Cero Tirador would also have a much faster projectile speed to compensate since it's practically a railgun.
then what's it's comparison to other kido? Where does that fit in comparison to our other spells? And would Cero Tirador be better used as an anti-material rifle or an anti-personnel rifle?
>>
>>1189335
Who is it that use Cero Tirador?
I can't remember
>>
>>1189352
this. this right her just underlines HOW much little we've used that ability. It's such a fancy skill yet it sees absolutely zero use aside from the time Riku was an unstable hollow during the initial hollowfication stage.
>>
>>1189341
Anti-materiel, because it's best used against a target with strong passive defenses and no active defenses.
>>1189352
>>1189369
It's Rosa's technique, meaning Riku had to be hollowfied to use it up until the mid 40's. Subsequently she needs to have Kobara no Tachi released to even contemplate using it, at which point relying on Rosa's actual innate ability makes more sense (unless the target is slow, incapacitated, or prone to tanking hits).

“You still refuse to learn.”

Zaraki glares up from the ground, where he lies in a small crater of his own making. “If you're not gonna teach me somethin' I can use then of course I'm not gonna learn, moron.”

His opponent, Hyōsube Ichibē glares straight back at him, his voice filled with disappointment. “Then the name Kenpachi has truly fallen.”

“What did you say?” Zaraki demands, rolling over and rising to his feet.

“Every Kenpachi before you has had more than just a simple lust for blood,” Ichibē explains calmly. “You are the first who doesn't seem to care enough to improve his own skills. It makes me feel quite sorry for poor Yachiru, having to see the name she gave herself dragged through the mud.

“I don't think I like your tone, old man!”

“Then the feeling is quite mutual,” Ichibē shoots back before raising his zanpakuto. “Blacken, Ichimonji!”

In a single movement the brush spreads ink in an expanding black wave which catches and drenches Zaraki, who doesn't even make an attempt to dodge. Instead, he just looks angry.

“So your great plan was to cover me in this shit? What are you, a squid?”

“You embarrassed the name Kenpachi, so I relieved you of it,” Ichibē grins, shouldering the oversized calligraphy brush.

“What are you talking about, dumbass?”

Ichibē's grin only widens. “Say your name.”

In a moment of realization Kenpachi's eyes widen in shock. His lips move, but no words escape them. He snarls, as if trying and failing to roar out a response, and finally he locks gaze with the Monk. “The hell did you do?”

“I simply rendered you as nameless as that sword of yours,” Ichibē explains nonchalantly, his very presence becoming a palpable threat as he prepares to attack. “Without a name you are powerless, the same as your zanpakuto currently is.”

“Call its name or die.”

- The Duel -
Kurosaaki Ichigo stands alone in the middle of Karakura High School's courtyard, dressed in black. His claw-like zanpakuto rests against his shoulder as he waits to see who it was that called him out. Couldn't possibly be Ishida again, could it? The last time was nearly a disaster, and he figured that he'd already buried the hatchet with the quincy. So who?

It isn't long before he gets his answer. Another figure clad in black approaches without a word of explanation over Ichigo's demands, until she's finally close enough for Ichigo to tell who she is.

“Tatsuki?” he exclaims with a sigh of relief. “So it's just you. What a relief, I thought someone in the Soul Society was calling me out!”

He rubs the back of his head with a dopey grin on his face, then turns to head back inside. “Well, I'm gonna go back inside now. You should get back in your body too...”

“That's not going to happen,” Tatsuki insists quietly, hand resting on the hilt of her zanpakuto in its sheath behind the small of her back. “I have to know, Ichigo. I have to know how I stack up with you.”

Ichigo's silly expression suddenly grows serious. “I guess you really mean that. Let's take this somewhere else.”

“Of course, numbskull,” Tatsuki sighs, rolling her eyes in frustration. “My note said to meet me here, not that we were gonna fight here. Do you really think I'd be that reckless?”

“I had my doubts,” Ichigo admits, his expression unchanged. “Remind me, who was the one who insisted my aunt stab them in the heart?”

“I made that choice for myself, not for others,” Tatsuki admonishes her old friend. “The way I was I couldn't protect myself if things got bad... forget about anyone else. So I took a risk.”

“That's a different thing entirely from putting innocent people in harm's way to satisfy my own ego.”

“So you admit this is about your ego?”

Tatsuki shakes her head. “You still don't fucking get it, do you? Fine, think whatever you want.”

The two high schoolers take off down a series of back alleys and narrow, winding roads on a course through town. Finally they reach the Urahara shop and invite themselves into the seemingly empty building, heading straight for the underground training chamber.

“This should be fine, right?” Tatsuki asks, finally drawing her zanpakuto. “Don't you dare hold back on me, Ichigo. You do and it defeats the whole purpose.”

“Fine, fine,” Ichigo sighs, readying Zangetsu. “If you insist on doing this, I guess I have no choice.”

“Then let's go!” Tatsuki insists, opening with a wide swing towards Ichigo's right side which he parries, bracing Zangetsu against his fist. He seems to have anticipated a much stronger swing, but hardly moves under the blow.

Ichigo pushes against the side of his blade and answers with a one-handed swing that pushes Tatsuki across the dirt. She grits her teeth and digs in with her toes, throwing all the weight she can behind her own parry.

“Is that all?” Ichigo asks, sounding almost disappointed. In response Tatsuki sighs, tapping her head with the side of her fist.

“Of course... Zangetsu's always released, isn't it?” she mutters. “That accounts for the difference in force.”

“You mean your zanpakuto's not released?” Ichigo asks with a scratch of his head. “Guess being half-Quincy means things work a little differently for me.”

Tatsuki holds out her zanpakuto in front of her, blade parallel to the ground, while Ichigo waits patiently. “Pummel, Tōōkenju!”

Her outfit changes in a moment, the cord wrappings of her zanpakuto's hilt becoming wrist and ankle wrappings and its blade morphing into a matched set of finely-crafted knuckles. She eyes her opponent warily, fists raised in a guarded stance.

“Alright, Ichigo,” she grins. “Now we should be able to have a fair fight!”

This time it's Ichigo who takes the initiative, swinging Zangetsu effortlessly only to have its edge intercepted by Tatsuki's knuckles. His eyes widen as she kicks his sword practically out of his grasp and nearly bashes his skull in with a left hook aimed at his temple. The left jab that follows clangs against Zangetsu's blade.

“So this is your shikai?” Ichigo grunts in exertion, forcing Tatsuki to brace herself with both fists against his blade. “It suits you better than a sword!”

“I'm counting on it!” she counters, once more pushing Zangetsu clear and darting in with her right fist cocked back. Ichigo brings down Zangetsu spine-first, targeting the base of Tatsuki's neck and passing straight through her. In response she turns through the air and lands a powerful roundhouse kick on Ichigo's unguarded jawline.

“I'm counting on it because you've never studied kenjutsu,” she explains, batting aside Zangetsu's blade yet again. “While I've been doing martial arts my entire life!”

Ichigo brings down his sword, putting such force behind it that the blade ends up lodged in the ground between Tatsuki's feet... after passing cleanly through her yet again without leaving so much as a scratch.

“That's the second time I should've hit you but didn't,” Ichigo comments, eyeing his friend warily.

“I'm still getting caught up on mine,” she shoots back with a snarky grin. “Gimme a few more minutes.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means you're infuriating sometimes, Ichigo,” Tatsuki admits, slugging the boy in the shoulder. “Like you hear the words coming out of my mouth but you're just not listening!”

“Is it wrong that I didn't want you involved in this?” he presses, slicing upwards through nothing as Tatsuki avoids Zangetsu's edge. “I tried to keep you at arm's length because I didn't want to put you at risk.”

“Protecting people is one thing,” she retorts with a powerful bolo punch to the ribs as her opposite fist blocks Zangetsu's blade. “Making decisions for them is another. If you'd told me what was going on I'd have helped.”

“I don't need your help!” Ichigo snarls.

“So is that your ego talking?” Tatsuki snipes in response, Ichigo's blade intercepting her left jab. “You're getting your message mixed up, Ichigo. Do you want to protect the rest of us or do you want to prove to yourself you can do it?”

Ichigo pauses, his grip on Zangetsu's wrapped hilt tightening. “I guess it's a bit of both... it's right there in my name. Protecting people is how I make sense of all this, give it meaning. Put it in perspective. If I can't do that, then what's it for?”

“And if you're a danger to the people you care about, then it defeats the purpose,” she supposes, her expression softening. “But if you really care about us you have to realize that we all feel the same way you do, at least to some degree... and it hurts to be treated like a liability. The harder you push us away the worse it gets.”

“You've been doing it to me for years,” she concludes, clenching her fists. “Ever since the first time you beat me in a match and just never fought me again, and I'm sick of it.”
