It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies.
Previously in Fantasy Crusader Quest:

After some confusion, and a council of captains, half of the force is staying where you arrived, while everyone else is exploring the area, trying to find out where you even are.
>>
>>1169788
With the crowing of one of the camp's roosters, you are awakened at the crack of dawn, the first few rays of sun peeking over the horizon. Yawning, and stretching, you throw off the furs that served as your bedroll, and stand, cracking your neck.

Your sleep was far from restful, and your dreams were even worse. You dreamt of vast landscapes and grand visas, but something seemed wrong about them. As if there was something hidden watching you.

Shaking it off, discounting it as nightmares as a result of the... event that brought you here, you get dressed, putting on a tunic and trousers. As you pull on your boots, you realize: Where's Edgar? He should be helping you get dressed. So where is he?

Pushing aside the tentflap, you walk out into the camp, looking around for your squire. This early in the morning, only the squires and pages are up and about, preparing the morning meal alongside the monks, helping their lords get ready for the day. Which begs the question: Why is Edgar missing? He's usually ready and eager to help you. This is very unusual.

Making your way to the Teuton squire's tents, you look around, and you see Edgar running towards you, sporting a black eye. Bowing, he begins stuttering.

"I-I'm s-sorry, milord, I... had to deal with s-something. Please forgive me."

Quirking an eyebrow, you say, "And what might that be-"

"SER REIS! I DEMAND AN APOLOGY FROM YOUR SQUIRE!"

Turning around, you see a red-faced, grey-bearded Italian knight bellowing at the top of his lungs, walking towards you, pointing at Edgar, who becomes even more nervous, if that were possible.

This is getting a bit ridiculous. It's the crack of dawn and it's all gone to hell.

What do you say?

>Please calm yourself, Sir Pagliaro, and tell me what is it my squire has to apologize for?
>Does this involve the black eye my squire has?
>Whatever happened, I doubt Edgar was to blame. He couldn't start enough trouble to cause a pond to ripple.

"Please calm yourself, Sir Pagliaro, and tell me what it is my squire has to apologize for? We haven't even broke fast and you're about to fly into a rage, please, calm yourself."

The shorter Italian man makes a visible effort to calm down, and says,

"Just... come with me."

Leading you through the tents, Paglario takes you to where a large group of squires are gathered around in a circle, talking quite loudly. Growing silent as you approach, they part for you, and look at Edgar with... respect?

In the center of the circle, lying in the dirt, was Sir Paglario's squire, a musclebound (for his age) boy, with several scrapes and bruises, and what appears to be a broken arm, by the way it's turned. Connecting the dots, you look at Edgar, surprised.

"Edgar, did you do this?"

Wringing his hands, and nodding, he begins to stutter, "I- I, I did, milord, an' I can e-explain-"

One of the other squires cuts him off, patting him on the back. "Begging yer pardons, Sers, but Luciano was bein' a right ass about things. He threw the first-."

Glaring at the other squire, Paglario silences him, and turns to you.

"Well? I expect your squire to apologize to me. Luciano will be unable to assist me, and my honor requires that I be given recompense."

He looks at you expectantly.

>"I expect nothing of Edgar, my good sir. Whatever happened, he was in the right."
>"Edgar was most likely in the right, but if it satisfies your honor, I shall have him apologize."

"Very well. Edgar was most likely in the right, but if it satsfies your honor, I shall have him apologize."

The squires around you look at you, shocked, while Paglario nods, satisfied. Nudging Edgar forward, he looks at Sir Paglario, nervous, but manages to stutter out:

"I'm... I'm s-sorry, m-milord. It won't happen again."

Turning on his heel, Paglario stands over his squire, kicking his leg. "Get up, you worthless excuse for a squire. We'll have to get that arm set." Groggily pushing himself to his feet with his good arm, the squire shambles after his master.

Once they're out of sight, you look at the rest of the squires, who are loitering around, talking about what just happened, and edging towards you, as if wanting to ask for an explanation. Turning to Edgar, you say, loud enough for the rest of the squires to hear, "I'm glad you satisfied his honor, although you were probably right to beat his squire. Now's not the time for conflicts among knights.Come, let's go to the tent, so you can tell me what happened."

Walking off with Edgar, you say, "And? What exactly happened that you had to fight Sir Paglario's squire?"

"We-well, sir, he started making implications about you, since I'm such a coward..." He hangs his head.

"I know I shouldn't said anything, but I couldn't let him say that about you, even if what he says about me is true..."

Surprised, you look at Edgar for a few seconds, before saying:

>"Coward? What you just did proved that you aren't a coward, Edgar. Although I'd prefer it that you didn't start conflicts with other squires."
>"Don't defend my honor like this, Edgar. What you do reflects on me."

Putting your hand on his shoulder, you give him a slight smile.

"Coward? What you just did proved that you aren't a coward, Edgar."

Letting him digest this statement, you continue.

"So long as you fight, fight poorly or well, with a smile or a grimace it matters not, so long as you stand and fight for righteousness no man can call you craven."

He looks up at you, surprised.

"That's something my master told me when I was a squire. I thought that having fear made me a coward, as well. It doesn't. Fear isn't bad, as long as you don't let it control you. Pretending you have no fear is what leads to machismo, which will get you killed."

Patting him on the back, you wink at him, and say:

"Although I'd prefer it that you didn't start conflicts with other squires. We need unity in the army right now."

He smiles, obviously feeling better. Your speech apparently go through to him.

"Thank you, milord."

With a slight grin, you say, "No problem, my squire. It's my duty to teach you. Now, let's get ready for the expedition, shall we?"

-------------------

Gathering up your armor and weapons, Edgar takes them to the Master of Horses to load them on the back of Gunnar. Normally, you would have a pack mare, but when you had left Acre, it was with utmost speed, so there wasn't time to form a proper caravan. It doesn't bother you too much, as Gunnar is a majestic horse, but you're not too proud to use him to carry your gear. You can see several of your men grumbling when they realize that their glorious warhorses will be used to carry their gear, but it's mostly the kind of complaining brought on by the early morning, so you don't worry about it too much.

Breakfast comes and goes, mostly a rushed affair, a brief thing before the expedition leaves. After you finish breakfast, you head to the Master of Horses, so you can brush down Gunnar personally. It's been too long since you've handled the horse out of battle.

As he sees you approach, he whinnies excitedly, and nuzzles your hand, letting you rub his nose, while you grab a brush from nearby, and start working out any burrs he might have in his hair. You wish you had an apple for him, but alas, not everything can go your way.

As you pet the warhorse, a feminine voice comes from behind you. Unusual for a war camp.

"Ser Reis, was it? Here."

Looking back, over your right shoulder, you see a tall, blonde woman in armor holding an apple for you to take.

Taking it graciously, you give it to Gunnar, who chomps into it enthusiastically.

"I thank you, my Lady. Might I have your name?"

Nodding, the woman gives a slight bow, as she introduces herself. "I am the Lady Natalia Baldoni Eufrasia Cusimano, at your service. You may call me Natalia, if you wish. I know you Germans think our long names somewhat ridiculous."

"So," you ask, "any reason for this visit, Natalia?"

She leans against the pen's makeshift fence. "No real reason. I just thought that you would make an interesting acquaintance, after you spoke up in the council."

Moving onto Gunnar's mane, you say, "How would that have given you enough of an impression of me to determine that?"

Smiling, she says, "Our comrades were ready to break out into another shouting match, Herard's order or no. Then you strolled in, handling yourself with grace. A cool head isn't something you'll often see when men, young and old clash." She shrugs nonchalantly. "I admire that."

Graciously accepting the compliment, you pat Gunnar's flank. "Well, my Lady, I thank you for your esteemed opinion of me. I would be most honored to have you as my acquaintance."

Turning around, and setting the brush down, and leaning against Gunnar, you ask, "Although, I must ask, is your warband one of the ones heading out to survey the surrounding lands?"

Nodding, she says, "Yes, my men are ready to ride out. We're due to head northwest, into the mountain range. What about you? Have you determined where you're headed."

You shake your head. "No, madam, I have not. I plan on determining such with my Brother Knight-Captains, shortly. Which," you say, motioning to Gunnar, "I have to get to doing, by your leave, my Lady?"

Smiling, Natalia nods. "As if you needed my permission. I'll let you go now, yes. Farewell, until next time, Ser Reis." Waving, Natalia walks away. Watching her go, you pull yourself up onto Gunnar. You have the feeling that she'll be an 'interesting acquaintance', as she put it.

Nudging Gunnar forwards, you ride him through the tents, to a location just outside the camp, where your Brothers are mustering. A short distance away, the five other Knight-Captains are talking. Riding up to them, they greet you with nods, and then continue talking.

"Gunther, it's decided, you and Veit will go to the Northeast and North-Northeast." One of the senior captains, a Sebastian Kuechler tells two of the younger ones. Nodding, they ride off to their men, and tell them to ready themselves to ride out, telling them the direction they're travelling.

Three of you are left, and Sebastian turns to you, asking, "Well, Victor, Berthold, and Sigmund, there's three directions left for you to go. East-Northeast, East, and East-Southeast. East-Northeast seems fairly tame, it's just plains as far as we can see. However, East and East-Southeast both lead into a forest, which you all shouldn't be unfamiliar with, considering what the home country is like. I still remember the battle in the Black Forest."

"I'll head to the East, split the difference." Smiling, you say, "Sorry, but I don't feel like reliving the Black Forest." Riding off to the head of your men, you hear Berthold and Sigmund arguing over who has to go into the deep forest. Shaking your head, you reach your column.

Raising your voice, you address your men. "We're going to be riding east, where the plains meet the forest. Let's ride out."

Heading away from the camp, at the head of your warband, the camp slowly disappears into the distance, until you can barely see the smoke from the fires. Not long after the smoke disappears, you start noticing the foliage growing taller and taller, until, eventually, you're surrounded by a light forest.

Onward, you ride.

-------------------

These woods, unlike the dark, foreboding forests of Germany, are warm, vibrant, and bright, which was a pleasant surprise. Honestly, you find it almost impossible that anything bad could happen in these woods, but, with your caution borne of years of experience, you still sent outriders to the fore and rear. Being cautious never hurt, as long as it didn't cause you to hesitate.

Riding quietly, you listened to your men, younger ones laughing and joking, and generally having a good time. The older ones still kept a wary eye on the forest, but they appeared to relax as time went on. It was good to see them take this whole, 'transported to another place' situation fairly well. It still hasn't really sunk in for you, honestly. But these woods have helped.

"So, milord, how would like me to do this? Would you like me to mark each track and trail, or would you like for me to only focus on any landmarks I come across, such as streams or any towns we come across?"

The quiet, still voice came from the monk sent along with you, a Father Donaidh MacAodhagain. The short, pudgy man rode his donkey beside you, keeping pace. "I can start now, if you like."

"I want you to mark everything. We don't know where we landed, and the more we know, the quicker we can get a more in-depth map."

Father MacAodhagain nods, jowls shaking. "Very well, then. I would ask you to keep this slower pace, so I can record it more accurately with my navigation instruments, but I can ad lib the map."

Shaking your head, you say, "No, we're not in any hurry. You can take all the time you need."

Bowing graciously, he says, "Thank you very much, milord."

"Of course, and thanks for all the work you will be doing, Father MacAodhagain."

Giving a little half-smile, he says, "All a part of my duties in serving the Lord, Ser. No thanks are necessary."

What a nice man. Not all monks are as pleasant as Father MacAodhagain. You remember a Father from a monastery back in Germany, where you stayed on one of your journeys, protecting pilgrims. From nightfall to daybreak, he was preaching fire and brimstone all night, at the top of his lungs. Just outside the guest house.

Needless to say, neither you nor the pilgrims you were guarding were too happy about him when you left.

Riding in silence for the next few hours, you realize how quiet it is without Edgar. Oh well. The journey would've taken much longer, and you would've had to take more supplies, if the knights had brought their squires. They wouldn't be ready for such a journey in the first place, anyways. Still, you can't help but miss the lad: he's quite handy, and you like having him around.

As you continue on through the forest, you hear something strange, or rather, the absence of something. Yet, you can't determine what it is. Everything SEEMS normal, at first glance.

The rustling of the tree leaves, the whinnying of the horses, the laughing of the men behind you, everything sounds normal. Nothing is out of the ordinary.

It takes you a few minutes of musing on your surroundings to figure it out.

There are no birds.

Unnerved, you reach back to grab your sword.

Your men see this, and all start to shout and ready their weapons before you hold up a fist, signalling them to be quiet. You need silence, so you can figure out what's wrong.

Reining Gunnar in, you listen intently. Unfortunately, you didn't catch the absence of sound in time, and, realizing that their cover was blown, 30 figures step from the underbrush, all wearing green and brown clothing, and wielding longbows. All of which, are, quite unfortunately, aimed at your chest.

Their leader, a dusky-skinned man, with long hair, was strange looking, what with his pure white eyes, but the strangest thing about him was his ears.

Pointed and long, they defined him as clearly inhuman. You could barely understand what you were seeing, yet, you froze at the sight of all the arrows pointed at your chest.

Face dour and grim, the leader said, "Now that you know we're here, might I ask who you are and why you're here? Don't worry about your outriders, they're safe."

Still in slight shock, you shake your head, and say....

(Sorry for such the short post)

Sighing, you sheathe your sword, and looking the man in the eye, you say, "If you might stop pointing arrows at me, I might be convinced to tell you."

You're DONE with this craziness. Brought here by a sorcerer, having to deal with a fight between squires, and now getting held at arrow point by inhuman highwaymen? FUCK IT ALL. You'll listen to this man, but if he turns out to be some sort of daemon bandit murderer, you're going to kill him.

Nodding as if this was expected, he said, "I'd request that you come with me, please." Signalling for his archers to lower their bows, he looks at you inscrutably. It's almost impossible to tell what he's thinking, just by looking at him.

Hopping off your horse, you turn towards your men, who look at you nervously, and say....

To your men....
>Don't worry, stay here. If I'm not back within a day, come after me.

You know what? No. You're not going anywhere.

"Anything that can be said in the woods can be said right here."

The man turns around, surprised, so you continue.

"If this is how you treat expeditionary forces, I'd hate to see how you treat your enemies.

"Honestly, an ambush? You could've simply talked to me, instead of shoving arrows in my face like some sort of God-bedamnned PRICK."

Every one around you is surprised, the man, your men, the man's men, as you stand there, fists clenched.

Standing there defiantly, you say, "Well? Ask me what you want, I'm not going anywhere."

Uncertain, the man's soldiers halfheartedly raise their bows, and look at him. Waving them off, the man approaches you, the slightest grin on his face.

"Well now. I think I like you now. I suppose I can ask my questions right here."

You nod. "Thank you."

"Where do you and your men hail from?" Gesturing to the emblems on your gear, he asks, "What knightly order are you a part of?"

"Germany, and we are brothers of Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt, otherwise known as the Teutonic Order."

Frowning, he asks, "I can't say I've heard of either of those. Yet I can't say you're lying, because if you were, I'd know."

Would literally happen to us either way, difference is, they get 11 hostages, instead of 1. After all, they would be able to take the initiative and do first strike at their choosing, we don't exactly have that attitude in mind, so we don't get to make that move. How many of our men do you think will still be alive if 30 archers attack our 10 bodyguards first?

>>1171466
There's 50 of us in armour and shield, we outnumber them, and have horses which can ride them down. If they can fool and trick the enemy into weakening themselves, and break them up so they take less casualties then why wouldn't they? But above all else, why risk your life? If they truly mean no harm then there is no harm to being cautious in protecting our lives.

Sighing, you rub your temples. "Honestly, I have no idea. We were fighting heathen and then we're in front of some Saracen-looking sorcerer."

His eyes flash with recognition at the word sorcerer, but he is visibly confused. "Saracen?"

"They're brown-skinned heathen that live in the East. Recently, they've been occupying the Levant, threatening our Holy Land," You explain. "They believe in a blasphemous perversion of our God."

The dusky man frowned. "Levant? Holy Land? I've never heard of these before."

"They're... probably nowhere around here, to be honest. However, the Holy Land is where our God's son lived, and the Levant is the area around that."

The darker man frowns, but doesn't say anything about whatever it is made him do so. "And what are your intentions, sending two warbands into our forest?"

"We didn't know you would be here, and, well, as I said before, we're an expeditionary force. We're trying to map out the area, before we make any decisions."

Nodding, he says, "Good to hear. I'll tell the others, my kin, about you, so there are no more 'misunderstandings' like this one." Hesitating for a bit, he says, "My name is Wyrran Eilfaren, if you ever need to speak with anyone from the Mornaur Woods, ask for me."

Nodding to his men, he says, "I'll send your outrider back with a guide. May the forest guide your path, and may the leaves hide your trail."

That sounded like a blessing, so you reply with: "And may god be with you."

Smirking, he says nothing, and before he has taken two steps into the underbrush, he's vanished, along with the rest of his men.

Turning around, you look at your men. "Well, you heard him. Might as well wait here for our man and that guide."

Subdued, they get off their horses, and sit on the ground.

And so you wait.

--------------------------------------

It's about half an hour later when you see your man approaching, following a much smaller, slighter form on a smaller, more nimble-looking horse. A ginger-haired being similar to Wyrran, bow on her back, riding a white mare is cheerily leading your man along, as if this were just a stroll in the woods.

As he approaches, he nods at you appreciatively, and thanks you silently. You nod, and turn to the ginger on the white horse, who is watching you with a cheery grin on her face, waiting for you to speak.

Looking at her, you can see from her cheeky grin that she's not gonna say anything soon, so you'll have to end this game before it begins.

".... Hello."

She waves at you, smiling. "Hi!"

And then she says nothing again, still with that fu- stupid smile on her face.

"Sorry if this is rude, but what even ARE you people? There's no one like you where we come from."

"There's no one like ME anywhere! That's right!"

.... You're going to slap a woman for the first time ever if she doesn't-

"We're Elves, ser knight! Of the Wood variety." Wood elves, that's a start. You could do without the banter, however.

"And I," She says, placing a hand on her chest, "am Cellica Shadan, best pathfinder this side of the Eloimaya Range!"

"....Charmed, I'm sure." Holding out your hand, she takes it, and gives it a hearty shake.

"I'm to guide you through the woods, and wherever else ya need to go!" That sounds incredibly generous on Wyrran's part. Suspiciously so.

"Really? Wyrran's willing to part with the "best pathfinder this side of the whatever Range" for an undetermined amount of time, so she can guide a foreign warband in their travels?"

Her smile breaks a little, and she says, "...Yes!"

"Really?"

Cellica looks as if she's about to break, and tell you everything, when you let go of her hand, and shrug.

"Alright then. Let's get going."

Breathing an audible sigh of relief, the small elf smiles and says, "Y-yeah, let's do that!"

Shaking your head, you pull yourself up on Gunnar, and turning him around, call out to your men.

"Alright, men, mount up. We're going to be riding for a few more hours, and then, we'll set up camp before dark. Might finally get a break from all this insanity."

Your men give you looks implying they would like that, but they doubt that would happen. Still. A man can dream.

Riding out, alongside Cellica, you followed her directions, until you reach a clearing, which has enough space on the ground to start fires and lay out bedrolls.

Calling out for your men to start camp, you hop off Gunnar, looking around the surrounding area. Good enough.

------------

About an hour later, campfires are burning, bedrolls are laid out, and men are sitting around the fires, talking in small groups. At the edges of the camp, knights stand watch. Tonight, you can finally relax.

Hopefully tomorrow isn't as hectic.

Sitting by yourself, leaning against a tree, staring up at what sky peeks through the trees, you begin to finally relax, muscles finally unclenching. It doesn't seem like that's going to last, though, as Cellica the "Wood Elf", as she calls herself, is approaching you.

"Hey~!" She waves.

"Hello?"

"What are you doing by yourself?"

Just relaxing and being a leader I can't really be the men's friend. A mix of those. Ask her about the land, politics and I guess about her.

A interesting formula you can implement, is less votes=longer post time, more votes shorter post time. Have the default around 45mins, maybe and shorten it by 5min per vote.

"Just relaxing. I've had a stressful day. Also, a leader can't really be a friend to his men, so I usually sit alone."

Cellica falters at this, face falling.

"That sounds... really lonely...."

Shrugging, you offer a halfhearted smile. "I'm used to it."

She steps forward, worried look on her face. "No! That doesn't make it okay." Biting her lip, she frowns, determined, and then says, "I can talk to you, if... if you want."

Offering up yet again, another shrug, you say, "Sure, I suppose.. You can sit on that rock right there."

Sitting down on said rock, Cellica gives you a smile, and says, "So... what do you want to talk about?"

Putting your hands behind your head, and leaning back, you ask, "So, what can you tell me about these Morn-oor Woods that we're in?"

Chuckling, Cellica says, "Morn-OUR, not Morn-oor. And, well, it's my home. I've stayed here my whole life, so I know every hidden trail, every clearing, and every thicket."

Face scrunching up in thought, she continues; "What did Lelani teach me in my history lessons? Oh, yeah. My people have lived here for thousands of years, kept to ourselves, mostly. Uhh... I'msorryIcan'tremembermuchmoreIdidn'tpayattentionwhenwelearnedthisinschool!"

Raising an eyebrow, you ask, "Alright? So, if you can't tell me about your history, can you tell me about the area around the Mornaur Woods? What can I and my friends expect when we leave?"

Perking up, Cellica smiles. "Oh, I can tell you all about that, even though I'm not allowed to leave the wood- oop!" She shuts up quickly and looks at you furtively, with a guilty look on her face.

>So, what about when we leave? What can we expect?

Didn't think I'd have to explain that part but I guess I do so I give people to much credit. A good commander makes the necessary choice as to whether or not to commit his men to action to accomplish a objective, They can be friendly and professional at the same time, and good commander would never give a order he would not carry out himself.

Smiling, you chuckle at Cellica's antics, but not unkindly.

"Don't worry, Cellica. Your secret is safe with me."

Sighing with relief, the small elf smiled at you, saying, "Thanks, Victor. I am pretty bad at keeping secrets, though, you gotta admit."

Shrugging, you say, "Not as bad as some people I know." She looks at you skeptically, and you reaffirm this statement. "It's true! You'd be amazed at how bad some knights are at lying. I blame their pious upbringing."

This gets a chuckle out of the elf, and you wait for a bit, before asking, "So, Cellica, what can we expect, once we get to the other side of the forest?"

"Oh, uhm, let's see, us, we're gonna leave the forest and there's gonna be a moor where ya wanna look out for the thistles and little tiny holes that horses' feet can fall in, and your friends, they're gonna come out into a marsh, but there's a path that they can get through if my friends lead them to it, and after that, it's just a flood plain until you hit the coast!"

You give her a small smile, and say, "Thanks, Cellica."

Sitting in silence, she debates something with herself, before asking: "Um... Victor? Do.... do you mind if I talk to you more often? I don't think... anyone should be alone."

Looking at her, you nod, grinning. "Yeah, Cellica. That would be fine."
