In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

+About+
Chapter Quest is set in Warhammer 40k universe where players control a nameless Chapter Master, leader of the Ghosts of Retribution Chapter - an autonomous brotherhood of genetically engineered warriors tasked with protection of mankind.

This quest is a mixture of traditional role playing, resource management and grand strategy. Main narrative is driven by the players rather than QM and doesn't have a pre-set "main storyline". Original purpose of the game was to push the story of 40k past year 999.M41.

Chapter Master approaches Nerial Derang, High Astropath of the Ghosts of Retribution with a question:
>Hello my friend, I was wondering if you could fill me in on what you know about Entyrus Zykion, his works and his motivations? And how he was killed?

Nerial smiles:
>Why did this question come up to you, milord? Well, Lord Zykion was the main architect of the whole founding. As a matter of fact I started my career under one of his close confidants, Lady Sabrina DeHague, I suspect that she might have even been his lover at some point. Well, but it's ancient history. He was a driven man, very ambitious, charismatic and strong willed. Seen him personally maybe a handful of times, but sent him messages numerous times. Absolute majority of them were encrypted, so wouldn't be able to tell you much about what was sent or quite often even to whom... Entyrus Zykion rose to the rank of High Lord sometimes in the middle of the second century of this millenium. He originally held the position of the Speaker for the Chartist Captains, but within less than a century he ended up being declared as the Master of the Adeptus Administratum. High Lords of Terra are among the most powerful and influential beings in this galaxy, one of the most surprising things for me was how he always found time to check up on our Chapter, he treated our Founding almost as his pet project. While Foundings are obviously important, he seemed almost obsessed about everything going according to some greater plan of his. His assassination is actually an interesting story... Which... Wait. Hm... How weird. I mean... Right! I remember. Yeah, so as I was saying, that is how he was assassinated. I don't know, if I will remember anything else, I will tell you more about it.

Sensing that something seems off, Chapter Master gently touched Nerial's temple and extended tendrils of psychic thought trying to sense what is stopping Nerial from revealing more about the mysterious man.

Roll: 68/100 [0 failure]
Willpower: 64
[Medium test +0]

Chapter Master feels that Nerial's mind was clearly altered by a strong psychic entity, but it's effects are subtle and feel more like a careful surgery rather than a usual axe-job that many Imperial interrogators or Inquisitors pull on their prisoners who know more than they should, but cannot be eliminated. However it seems that the effects of psychic operation are well hidden by decades that passed since the events, so digging deeper might be problematic. What approach shall you take?

a) Try to undo psychic operation [WP(-30) test]. Getting over 2 degrees of failure will inflict permanent damage to Nerial's psyche. Over 4 degrees of failure will kill him.

b) Try to "fish" for clues without digging too deep [WP(-10] test], over 4 degrees of failure will inflict permanent damage on Nerial's brain. Every DoS will give you a glimpse of the hidden memories, if they still exist in some form.
>>
>>1167918
Neither! Not gonna hurt precious Nerial after we just spent all that money to keep him alive for another two centuries.

Maybe in the future we'll be able to get someone more skilled to assist.

Attero, birthplace of Saint Acheus greets you with dust and heat. Your Thunderhawk lands way after sunset, but the rockrete of the landing platform is still hot from the day of the sun. Sarrasima Convent looks just as foreboding as it did the first time when you visited it years ago. A squad of Sisters of Battle greets you and with all the respect due for someone of your rank, take you deeper into the fortress. There, she waits for you. Emilia Engel, a lady made of cold steel with eyes that shine brightly with will, zeal and possibly madness. All the most important qualities of Cannoness Preceptor.
>Welcome, Astarte. May He blesses your steps and guides your actions. I must admit I am intrigued by your visit, last time you visited this planet, it was with a bolter in your hands. Our conflict might have been resolved, but the Order remembers. So, how did my Covenant earn this... honour?

Greetings Cannoness Engels. May the emperor watch over us both on this planet. The past between your order and my chapter has had serious misunderstandings indeed. I came here with the hope to prevent future misunderstands as they brought much pain to this fateful sector.

During my relatively short time here, I fear I might have stepped on some things that should not exist within the higher echelons of power and, as you well know I feel ill suited to handle this alone. I am a warrior of the Emperor. I fight his enemies with bolt and blade, but,I feel ill-equipped to handle these matters. There is a reason the Adeptus Astartes are outside the regular institutions.

As you are aware of the relations between my chapter and your order, you can see that I did not come here lightly but I feel the matter is too severe and delicate to deal with it alone.

Since I dislike spreading false accusations, I will be as blunt as you know me: Do you suspect someone important of treason?
>>
Skargan can we proceed with the Mormark financial suggestions i posted previously? Are you fine with them as is or do we need to role play them?

>Well, that is indeed very blunt of you, Astarte. I think I suspected someone in this very room of treason at one point or another. However we are all aware of how easy it is to betray and how hard it is to stay on the path of the righteous. Please elaborate what exactly would you consider a treason and what does "somebody important" mean to you? I mean if you are asking me whether I know about the fact that some nobles on Tachion Primaris openly use xenotech? That is no news to me. Do I suspect Nestorian techno-wizards of brewing something nefarious under the cover of their humanitarian efforts? Without a doubt. Do I know that some Astartes fight using methods of the enemy? You bet. You should be more specific if you want me to play your game.

forgive me, My Lady, i would not have sought your councel if it was some transgression. When I say treason, I mean exactly that, to abandon ones emperor given task and the Imperium of Man and conspire with a hostile entity against the wellbeing of the Imperium itself.
There is some proof of my accusations. Kruun was not a mere prisoner revolt and is highly possible under control of this hostile entity. Here is a record of our last attempt to scout the situation. As it is near to the despicable warpstorm, it is not something i am willing to overlook.

With that being said, I ask for your counsel:

Larion Ursus. Certain circumstances necessitate my chapter work closely with the Ursus family. During our relationship with them we have come to discover things about them. Things that imply they work with the Styrian Triarchy and gave them the avenues required to arm, support and reinforce the revolting prisoners. I know not why Ursus is in bed with the triarchy, it may be somehow related to their sorcerous ways if not his own free will.

>1) 354.M41 = The High Lords of Terra will announce that the Mormarkian quarantine will be lifted. An absolutely enourmous opportunity to become friends with the Merchant League. After much negotiation we generously agree on the following terms: all Iron Phoenix docking fees for their ships are waived, 20% of available storage space on Iron Phoenix is reserved for their use free of charge, the may rent additional storage space at market rates up to 33% of station capacity, agreement to last 50 years (or whatever people want). In return we expect them to feel VERY positive towards us and treat us well in the future. If they're very nice to us we might even put in a good word for them when the negotiate with Kerius Dermont.
This seems like a very feasible plan. Please select one of the Merchant Lords whom you would like to approach with your proposal. This Merchant Lord will argue your case at the Merchant League and will gain more power/prestige from it, also he will feel personal gratitude to you as well.

>2) An influx of merchants means many wide-traveled people on the station who would be willing to share information to a friend with a drink or a pretty face or someone with coin to offer. Tell Xyptus his vacation is over and to get off his ass and start creating a local spy network to take advantage of an keep an eye on all the new visitors. Investigator Hestrom will be in charge of creating the civilian security force for the Iron Phoenix although he shouldn't make himself indespensible since we might have to send him on other assignments.

Do you want these arrangements to take place after the agreement with Merchant Lords is arranged or beforehand? Creating spy network will require time and monetary investment. One option to avoid expenses would be to allow your spies to fund themselves through black market dealings, but this will mean that Iron Phoenix will earn a... "reputation" so to say.

>3) According to chapter inventory we have a "Mostly functional Vagabond-class Merchant Trader" collecting dust. Offer to Merchant League. We supply the ship and fix it up if necessary (within reason). They provide a crew and operating costs. Proceeds are split 50/50.

This ship would require a Named Character to operate and run. You can either select someone you know, generate new character from Chapter serfs/friends/allies for 0xp (amateur, basic skillset - 1 stat, 2 skills),1 xp (good, strong skillset, 2 stats, 4 skills) or 2xp (professional, impressive skillset - 3 stats, 7 skills).

Instead of giving her the neat recording, give this revised statement regarding Dreifus (to say after the conversation about Ursus has finished):

"Dreifus ranted about the recent assassinations of priests by the Iron Monks, and I was surprised he would know about such things as he was on the run. Either way I am not part of such matters and I know you are in charge of Ecclesiarchal security, so perhaps you should be on the lookout."

Did public records show priests killed that coincided with Dreifus' testimony? Or would it be a difficult investigation to find out? If the latter, we would keep out of it as it is Engel's business.

Furthermore we have 2kids in our care, kids from the previous rulers, that Ursus wants. They are not well educated, given their upbringing this is not suprising, I know. >Iron Monks? Conspiring against other members of the Ecclesiarchy..? Well, that's certainly possible, I guess they might want to keep their dominance over White Preachers and Eagle Bearers... Are you sure about this? Because if I act upon this, it might have some serious consequences...

You see that Amelia is less composed than she was at the beginning of the conversation - idea of priests assassinating each other is not something that her worldview accommodates well. After all, priests are supposed to be the most righteous among the servants of Him on Terra.

>>1184796
Yes, she now has all of the information that you have about Kruun rebellion.

Sector is wide, there are many places to check and people to ask. You may roll d100, but without a concentrated effort this will have only 7% success rate. Because of your instructions you get +10%

Drey Kasting greets you with a smile and a glass of amasec in his hand.
>Everything's better than expected, old friend. It seems the Lords are pleased with you so far and "Deus Question" has always been something of a bother that has been pushed away many times over. The prospects of you solving it once and for all are welcome. However at the same time Sector Deus forms a crux for Imperial defensive line in this part of Segmentum, both militarily, economically and logistically. Take care, any signs that your plan is falling apart or that you are not up to the task and this support could vanish in an instant and you'll find yourself on the Space Wolve's black list... How is it going so far? How many factions do you have on your side? What is your next big step against Ursus? I have to bring something back to Terra... Better make it good.

"The Adeptus Mechanicus are allies of ours. The Adepta Sororitas are devoted to Sector piety and have just sent some teachers to help tutor the Belisarians. We're currently making moves to gain the support of the Merchant League."
"One thing that would help us immensely would be if you could have the information on the amulet transferred to a medium we can present as proof to other factions. That would help us gain the support of the others."
"As for our next big step. This is the political arena. Our current idea is to simply take the planetary palace and arrest ursus once we have the support of the required factions, but what would you do?"
>>
>>1184829
>to Kasting
At the moment we have strong support from the Mechanicus. We have plans already in motion for the support of the navy and imperial guard as well as the merchant league now that you have officially opened our planet up. With the military, technology and commerce of the sector behind us we expect minimal resistance. We have reached out to the Ecclesiarchy but it will come as no surprise to you that this is the most difficult area. When we heard you were visiting in person we placed some of these plans on temporary hold in case you had special instructions but if you have no objections we will proceed. As a side note if you have any suggestions or advice we are willing to listen.

>The Grave
There are reports from the Grave Defence Command HQ that an unidentified raiding party escaped the Grave and is heading in the direction of Sictix. The speed of the vessels and warp power that was used to guide the ship through the twisting warp gales of the Grave suggests presence of a Traitor Marine Sorcerer. There are some good news though - we know that this raiding party was relatively small, no more than a few ships.

Having a society made up of different immigrant groups on Varda is not very good for societal stability. Kvei Lohar reports that different subgroups have developed competing criminal networks. He understands that half-hearted measures won’t bring long-term results, so he wants to consult with you. He believes that security could be secured either by supporting one of the groups and allowing them to dominate the market or exterminating all of them. Will you:
a) Support Mormarkian “Wardogs” who profit from protection rackets & weapon smuggling. Vardan annual income will decrease by -5% permanently.

b) Support Tachionian “Gents” who deal in drugs. Health levels in Varda will decrease, so will population growth (-2%), possibly affecting Astartes recruits as well.

c) Support Protheran “Clubbers” who profit from prostitution & gambling. Having them in power will decrease Vardan loyalty and could incite more heresies in the future.

d) Exterminate them all. Kvei Lohar will introduce martial law and effectively create a police state. Every year there will be a 5% chance of winning the war on crime, it will increase by +1% each year. Expect resistance and discontent.

e) Do nothing, let them fight it out. Lose d10W, then roll d3 to see which gang starts dominating the market. Approach the dominating gang and start recruiting directly from their ranks, gaining special "criminal" units for your serf forces. Marines with criminal backgrounds will start appearing in the Chapter as well.

Imperial Navy encountered medium sized Styrian force near the world of Kruun. We have strong suspicions that this might be the same force that destroyed our brothers during the Operation Glass Eye. In a fierce battle that lasted for over two weeks, Imperial Navy inflicted significant casualties upon the enemy, destroying around 5 squadrons of enemy escorts and a capital ship "Enlightened Myth". Mars Class Battlecruiser Hoplite was heavily involved in the action, it's Admiral Sagor van Daur was commended for his actions, but the ship itself will now have to retire to Nestorian docks for the next [5+d2 years] to perform necessary repairs. Imperium also lost 2 escort squadrons. A great day for the Imperium!

Have Lieutenant Hector and the 6th on Varda assist. Make the following ultimatum:

"This is sovereign territory of the God-Emperor's Angels of Death, and we will have order. To oppose us by bringing crime to our streets is to oppose the will of the Emperor and to forfeit your soul to damnation for eternity. I, the Chapter Master of the Ghosts of Retributrion, give you this one chance to rescind your activities. To disobey this command is to invite unimaginable destruction upon you. I stand here, praying that you heed my words. For if you do not, you will regret the day you were born. To all good citizens of Varda. Go about your business and do not interfere. Thank you."

>congratulations on your great victory admiral. While you wait the 2 years for your ship to be repaired perhaps you would like to visit Mormark and share your expertise with our captains. I'm sure Nestorium won't mind we keep in touch with them often. Perhaps even a game of regiside over amasec?

What class was the capital ship? Light Cruiser? Full Cruiser? Bigger?

And any intel on how their navy fights? Their tactics?

And the lost Imperial Escort squadrons, how many were just damaged and how many were hulked? Any hulls we can snag up?

Purchase 10 thunderhawk package from Nestorium for 300w.

Accompany that with propaganda saying they are immigrants and showing that kind of behaviour to the society that took them in is shameful and we ask all good and upstanding citizens to support us in cracking down on this stain on their honor. Furthermore the restrictions will be lifted when the crisis is over

Surprisingly, your efforts have paid off. Xyptus got a tip from one of his former allies (-1W) that certain Admiral has been kidnapped from Kinteros and taken to Karn Dereg by a bunch of masked individuals for some unknown purpose... This is disturbing information, having in mind that Hagen hasn't been seen in public for a bit over a year. The Navy for now is running off inertia, but someone is going to notice soon as his aides will no longer be able to cover up for him...

>I would be delighted, Lord Astarte. I would be willing to share my expertise, but I must admit that I do have certain debts which I need to repay, otherwise my honour would be tarnished. The rumours of the luxurious cybernetics trade coming from Varda have reached my ears. Do you think you would be willing to support an out-of-luck Navy officer with a small donation?
a) Give him 1W, that's enough to buy a flat in one of the spires of Tachion Primaris
b) Let's not insult him, but there's no need to be luxurious - give him 5W, this is enough to buy a villa
c) We have been doing quite well these past few years, let's invest into making him our friend - offer him 10W

Send Brethorius and current 'with chapter master' forces except the 7th Company and Pax Sepulchrum to Shield Secundus to help whatever other forces I assume are on their way.
