You, Griselda, and Iris sit back on chairs at a TV, watching the replays. “See, there is when the ARVs drop the mines. Simple remote control,” says Griselda. The crews as a whole were busy washing and cleaning the tanks, gotta keep appearances up even in this sweltering heat. “But, here's the issue right now. Today is the flag match. This will probably be the hardest match for us to win today.”

“Why's that?” you ask.

“For one thing, Hadley's tank will be our flag tank today.” Oh. Great. Griselda continues on. “Second, J. Walter Christie will have access to that Karl Gerat mortar. Thirdly, they'll be starting in the hills this time and us behind that town. They'll have the advantage this time.”

“Unless they leave their cover and try to attack us?” asks Iris.

“Which is most likely,” says Griselda. She stands up, then places her hands on her hips. “But, we did win yesterday, let's state that again. If we lose today, it'll still hurt Christie in the long run. Both of us get a point but at least they stay in the Wild Card.” Yeah. You were for sure thankful that you won yesterday. Not much stress now about it. “But... I will say. I am nervous.”

Iris says, “We should be fine. Win or lose, we'll still be at the top of the division.”

“Iris is right. The best we can do for today is try. But I would prefer that we be in it to win it of course, Griselda.”

“Right.” Griselda folds her arms, sighing. “You all are dismissed. Meet up at the stage later on, alright?”

With that, you and Iris step out of Griselda's tent. Iris takes a sip of her tea, sighing. “It would appear that things are escalating. With the tournament only a few weeks from its closure, I do think things are going to get much more difficult.”

“You think so?” you ask.

“I know so,” she says. “Even past Christie, Joan D'Orleans and ZES are very good schools. I will take the time to study them later for you after the match. We can discuss our strategy for when we face them, yes?” You nod. “Good. In the meantime though, Elodie. Try and enjoy what time we have left.”

You smirk a bit. “You say that as if you're going to leave the team.”

“I would never.” She sighs. “Anyway, Elodie. Good luck today. Try not to hog all the kills.” You smirk. Fair enough.

Right. What to do now?

“Ah, don't sweat it!” The little girl in Hadley's crew, you assumed the loader, patted Hadley's head. Hadley looked about ready to burst into tears at the thought of being the flag tank. “We'll be fine! All we have to do is kick back, max and relax, right?”

“Actually.” You decide to be blunt. “Since the enemy possesses artillery, you're probably gonna be on the move constantly. Not to mention the fact that JWC is also known for its unpredictability which means that if it comes to a closer quarters fight, we'll definitely be at a disadvantage. And they'll likely knock you out if they find you alone.” The two of them stare at you.

Then the loader says, “Welp, take care, Hadley!” She immediately bolts.

Hadley says, “I can't do this!” She tugs down on her helmet, bringing it over her eyes. “I can't bear the same if it turns out I'm the one that got the team a loss this late in the tournament!”

“It'll be fine,” you say. “We'll protect you.” You fold your arms. “Besides, we've lost flag tanks to stupider reasons.” You look over at Serafina, who is idly eavesdropping in with her Polish crew. They wave hello as they sit on their tank.

“I've already done everything I can to prepare!” says Hadley. “I fitted new applique armor, I was up all night practicing with my crew too after we fixed up the tank! I even sacrificed my favorite set of panties to the shrine to the Marquis!” … what? You look over at Serafina, who shrugs again. “Ellie! You've got to cover for me!”

“Cover for you?” you ask.

Hadley says, “I'll pretend I caught like the flu or something! And then I won't have to be part of the team and we can let my crew handle themselves!”

Turning your head, you see Hadley's Loader and Driver wearing catcher's gear, same with her Gunner and RO. They piggyback ride joust each other with ammunition, knocking each over.

Hadley looks up. “Bu-”

“Just do it. Okay? We'll take care of the rest.”

Iris comes over, waving you on. “Elodie. It's time.” Oh dear. Time to go then. You leave behind a very nervous Hadley Carver along with her rambunctious crew.

Griselda and Perrine laugh a bit with each other. “... and then, when the drivers came back, their cars were missing and so was I!” The two of them explode into laughter at Perrine's story. “Ahaha! Aha! Ah...” Perrine wipes a tear from her eye. “Oui, yes, yes. Anyway.” She snickers a little. “Hehe. That's how I got banned from the Monaco Grand Prix.”

Iris frowns a little, confused. “I simply cannot believe how you got away with that.”

“Implying I did,” says Perrine. “No. But it was worth it I think. I never was a fan of Formula One anyway. Too many computers, not very exciting for me. Now, NASCAR.” She whistles admirably. “There is a motorsport. But I digress. We have a match today, no?”

“Yeah,” you say. “Flag match.”

“It's a shame that it might come down to me sniping your flag tank from several dozen miles away with my Karl-Gerat.” Perrine smirks a bit, folding her arms. “But that's how it is in NATO.”

Iris huffs. “Personally I don't see what's so entertaining about artillery.”

“It's another way for the poor schools to equalize themselves with the rich schools.” Perrine says, “But, there's too much value placed on it lately. People automatically assume large caliber HE means heavy tank killer. Simply isn't true. More likely you're just going to knock things loose, stun the crew, stuff like that. But, the more artillery you have, the luckier you get I suppose.”

Griselda asks, “What's your opinion on it?”

Perrine shrugs. “We've had artillery in Unlimited for years, so it's nothing new to me, cheri. But I understand your reservations about it. Way I see it, it's just a way of Tankery evolving.” She smiles a little. “One of the many lessons condensed into Senshadou is learning to accept when things change.”

“Things may change,” says Griselda. “But that doesn't mean we have to take it.”

Perrine smirks at that, shaking hands with Griselda. “Good luck, cheri. All of you as well.”

With that, you lean back and take a deep breath in the hatch of Oliver the Cromwell. You can see Hadley shaking as she stands turned out of her Jackson. “Alright. Here's the plan. > Move southwards

Your tanks move on southwards while the rest move into the town of Quartzsite. At least an hour or so passes when you travel. As you begin climbing the hills to try and get a good angle on the battlefield, you hear the radios go off. “This is Jane! I see something waaaaay out to the east! It looks like their flag tank!”

“What?” asks Griselda. “How far?”

“Uh. How far is the other side of the match locale?”

“Nevermind. Do you see anything else?”

“Yeah, a tank as big as John Travolta and five boxy looking turreted tanks, you know like uh... not boxy boxy but like hexagonal-”

“Ostwinds. Is that it?”

“Mmm... yeah, that's about it.”

“This is Duchess. I see some dust to the south near where Christie blew the Earth open.” Once you crest the hill, you take a look yourself. Definite signs of movement down to their south. But no sign of the Morser just yet past all those hills. Damn.

“Alright. Hold position,” says Griselda. “Elodie. The minute you hear that Karl fire, I want you and YOU alone to go hunt it.”

“Just me?” you ask.

“Just you. Suvorov and Dalia will guard Hadley.”

> Help the flag tank crew dig in. It's gonna be a long while.

You send Stack, Ingrid, and Josephina out to help Hadley, Suvorov, and Dalia dig their tanks into the hillside in case of bombardment. When the time comes, they'll be prepared. You keep a watch out with Winona for anything suspicious brewing on the horizon.

Then you see them. “I got sight of their tanks heading south. Bearing northwest.”

“How many?” asks Griselda. You see the Churchills, even Perrine's very distinctive Ardeer Aggie AVRE along with the ARVs and the Double Onions, you see the Sturer Emil, you see the E-100, and you also see the apparently repaired Panzer III along with the SMK, and the T31 Demolion tank too... That's basically all of them!

“It's almost all of them minus the Karl,” you report.

“Got it. Iris, hook south and back up Jane and the big heavies with me.” You keep on observing. “Elodie, just stay back and-” A loud bang erupts from the hillsides. What the...

You blink. “BRACE!” you scream. You grab onto the hatch.

The town of Quartzsite suddenly erupts in a massive fireball. “What the hell was that!?” screams Serafina. Thankfully, no targets hit. You look around for a smoke trail or anything. Then you see it out in the hillsides, near where they started.

“It's the Karl, it fired!” yells Griselda. “Elodie! If you see a gap, take it down before it reloads and fires again!”

Should we not swing round our rear then move along the north border? A frontal assault will mean having to push through all their tanks.
>>
>>1157091
Quicker to let them pass and then move around behind them, moving all the way North would take quite a while and we wouldn't be able to use the hills to make a covered approach from the South.
>>
>>1157118
Given the huge amount of open ground in the middle, I surmise we'll be spotted anyway while on the approach.

I'd prefer the more cautious approach but that's me.
>>
>>1157134
Cover not concealment, once we reach the Southern hills they'll guard us from fire of the enemy on our approach, even if they know we're there. We'll be spotted either way but I'm a bit more comfortable with the Southern approach, we also won't have to deal with the blocking position they've set up on Route 10 unless they move to defend the South, in which case they'll no longer have prepared positions.
>>
>>1157140
The problem is that we end up sandwiched on all sides by hostiles. Hills are all very well but we have to actually get to them first and the open ground looks perilous to me.
>>
>>1157163
They'd have to break off their attack to turn back once we bypass them, and none of them can even come close to matching our pace at the best of times, not to mention we'll pass them by well outside their effective range.
>>
>>1157163
Whatever surrounds us should be lightly armored enough for us to Death Blossom them.
>>
>>1157173
What's to say they won't? This could be a one way trip for Elodie.

Not a bad thing mind you. Got to get that Karl. Rest of team should be competent enough to win anyway.
>>
>>1157241
If they do then without arty cover we'll be able to shift our forces forward to the edge of town instead of within it. Where our long range team will decimate them on the approach. Really them breaking off the attack would be something of a boon, even if it does end in our being knocked out.
>>
>>1157250
Sure hope Elodie is ready to be a martyr for the cause then.
>>
>>1157272
There's still a good enough chance we can disengage into the Northern hills then head back into town. Again we're faster than anything on their team so as long as we don't dawdle it'll be very hard for them to actually box us in.

Your crew gets back into the tank, then you relay the order to move forward. Leaving behind Suvorov and Dalia to guard Hadley, the tank rolls into a ditch at the base of the hill to hide out. You'll wait for Christie's tanks to pass, then you'll move. “They're popping smoke! I can't see them! Dang it!”

“Hold fast,” says Griselda. “Wait-...”

“I'm assuming you see it too.”

“Yeah. Their flag tank and those Ostwinds are moving up as well,” says Griselda. “They're going all-in on this.”

“Cheeky little bastards!” yells Suvorov.

“Just hold steady! Elodie! Keep up with hunting that Karl! Once it's down, we can start moving freely!”

Right, right. Once the tanks are past, the Cromwell is ordered forward into the open. Though, on the other hand, you do now have a direct shot at the flag tank if you were to punch it. But...

There really isn't much cover around, the road's not raised and either side is basically flat with small shrubbery, even the dried riverbeds are very shallow. There's one that isn't but they'll be quite a ways past it by the time we arrive. There's no real safe place to take the shot from.
>>
>>1157420
but then again they are in the smoke with limited vision but forward. Pray that Christie dont have to look back and that is where we channel our inner Shimada-ryuu ninja style. This is why i want to trail several kilometers until Winona can safely say she can knock-out a tank with her magic shot.

After a half hour of going flatout on the open flats, you make it past the huge craters and holes marked up by yesterday's battle and rush up northwards. “This is Iris, I see the flag tank, they're... moving north now?”

“What do you mean they're moving north?” says Serina. “Are they lost!?”

“Something's fucky, but we can deal with it later!” says Griselda. You hear some scattered shots out in the distance. They are now engaged. “Retreat into the town, everybody! We're not gonna survive with that Emil in the way! Serina, Jane, Duchess! Exit back out west, you're not gonna survive in these streets!”

“Got it!” says Duchess.

“We'll draw them into the town then start picking away at their numbers,” says Griselda.

Right, right. You open the hatch and turn out. Where is that Karllll THERE IT IS! It's turning towards and OH SHIT THE GUN IS POINTING AT YOU. “BRACE!” you scream. It fires, shooting its massive 600mm shell straight at you.

You duck down, and feel the shockwave of it flying past and slamming behind you. The resulting shockwave sends the tank spinning out of control. “GET A HOLD OF THE CONTROLS, JOSEPHINA!” yells Stack. You hear something rip apart.

“What was that!?” you scream.

“The tracks are gone!” The Cromwell goes spinning into a ditch, thankfully not flipped over. Everyone vacates the hatches, getting some air. You look down to see the left track snapped up, with several links laying about. The suspension at least is intact though.

> MOBILITY KILL: Elodie R. Zumwalt (CROMWELL VIIw LT “Oliver”)

You look over at the Karl. You see the autoloaders getting to work on getting the next shell up. “Stack.” Stack pops her head up. “How long does it take to reload?”

“About ten, fifteen minutes?” she says.

“Winona, get on the gun. Stack, get me the box of APIT if you'd please.” Stack nods at your request, then produces an ammo box for you. Ingrid, Josephina. Get to fixing the track.

“Why us!?” yells Ingrid.

“Cuz I said so, now do it!”

Josephina wordlessly shrugs, then immediately sets about collecting the tracks. Ingrid sighs, getting the tools from the back of the turret. You quickly discard the regular ammo belt and load in the armor piercing incendiary rounds. You don't need to hit the Karl, you'll just hit the barrel or the shell. Both will blow up quite nicely.

You just have to do it all in ten minutes! You rack the bolt back, then bring the .50 level with the Karl. Please, please, please... You squeeze the trigger. A burst of tracers shoot at the Karl, gashing and penetrating the Karl's front. The barrel though remains relatively unscathed. You keep on firing away, setting a small fire off in the back. “Winona, HE!”

The tank fires, sending an HE shell right into the body of the Karl. The next thing that happens is the ammunition cooking off, then exploding brilliantly in a bright flash of white, before erupting into a cloud of fire. Well, that was easier than you thought it'd be.

Keep their fronts to the Ostwinds, preferably get hull down if they can. Other than the Hellcats they can weather 37mm rounds from the front and the Ostwinds are easy kills with their squishy huge turrets, the 90mm basically can't not kill one no matter its range/facing. Tac Maneuver sideswipe and track her! Get to our flag or find theirs and knock it out!

Based on the last match, she's going to want to engage us again, if we stun and gun, that should buy us some it so that we can regroup and then maybe lend a hand or two...

Feel free to shoot this one down if you have better ideas.

> ACTIVATE LOYALTY ABILITY TARGET WEAKPOINT (10 CP)

We can't get bogged down here, we need to catch up with those Ostwinds and get them before Hadley throws it.

Pretty sure target weakpoint just means that we will go for whatever is available, I don't believe we have to specify.

>>
> ACTIVATE LOYALTY ABILITY (TARGET WEAKPOINT) – 10 CP
> Deploy Smoke
> Speed Past Her

“Winona, target weakpoint! Fire!” The gun swivels around and fires a shot directly into her turret ring. You speed on past, blasting smoke canisters behind you as you roll along to cover your retreat. Alright, that was close. “Suvorov!”

“She won't stop!” yells Suvorov. “Fuck it! Target Hadley's tracks!”

“WHAT!?” yells Griselda. “Do not target-”

> MOBILITY KILL: Hadley Carver (M36 Jackson “Pain Train”)

“What!? What's going on!?” yells Hadley. What just went on was that Suvorov intentionally tracked her flag tank to get it to stop. Oh boy.

“Get in front of her now!” You finally come in just in time to see the five Ostwinds close in on a now tracked. Suvorov body blocks the Jackson with her body then fires a shot at an Ostwind. “APCR! Fire, fire!”

> KO: LAUREL SMITH (Flakpanzer IV Ostwind “Ratatata”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: SUVOROV (Panzer III Ausf. J – 50mm KwK 38 L/42 “Frederick”)

She fires again, another Ostwind goes down.

> KO: IVANA SIKORSKY (Flakpanzer IV Ostwind “Brrrrrt”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: SUVOROV (Panzer III Ausf. J – 50mm KwK 38 L/42 “Frederick”)

You join and fire at one of the Ostwinds as well. The Ostwinds smack and blow at the Panzer III's side armor, but it refuses to go down just yet.

> KO: MIKAELA KOSHKIN (Flakpanzer IV Ostwind “Brrrrrt”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Cromwell VIIw LT “Oliver”)

“Wait, the flag!” you yell. You spot the flag now retreating away from its escort Ostwind. “They're retreating! Get that Flag now!” you yell. Winona turns the gun on it. As that happens the last Ostwind finally snipes the Panzer III in the engine block.

> KO: SUVOROV (Panzer III Ausf. J – 50mm KwK 38 L/42 “Frederick”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: EDWINA ADERS (Flakpanzer IV Ostwind “Dakka Dakka”)

That Ostwind tries to maneuver around for a clear shot into the Jackson's rear. But it's too late. “FIRE!”

> KO: ALINA KAHN (Flakpanzer IV Ostwind “Pow Pow”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Cromwell VIIw LT “Oliver”)

For today, Suvorov won the match MVP, splitting the set with you. Everybody cheers on the Junior Historians, carrying them out of their damaged and battered tank. “Victory at last!” cheers Patton. “We kicked their fucking asses back to the stone age! Woo!”

Though, admittedly, it was quite close. No thanks to a certain someone. You decide to find Hadley and her crew moping about near their Jackson. The right track was completely blown off from that accurate 50mm shot. What Suvorov did was a very risky thing. Moving to avoid things is one thing. Actively moving when people are trying to block shots for you is another. It had a chance to backfire. But it didn't. So you won't lecture on it for now.

Instead, Griselda does in her own way. Suvorov, Giap, Clausewitz, and Patton smile as Griselda shakes their hands one by own. “Great move, Suvorov,” says Griselda with a smile. “Don't ever fucking do it again.”

They look at her, confused. Right.

Hadley looks up at you. “... I almost ruined it, didn't I?”

We're now tied for kills with Iris, which actually kinda makes me sad.

To be fair, Perrine basically knew how scary Iris was and neutralized her. It's not exactly like she can escape her wizardry so easily like we can.

That said, I hope Iris gets another blitz in her to take the lead for good, especially against ZES. I like us better when we're the shadow, not the tree.

“Yeah.” Hadley and crew look down, moping. “You all still have a lot to learn, so I won't blame you now. What you all need to learn is that coolness under fire is an essential skill in Tankery. When you crack like that, you put the whole team at risk. You guys need to work on your discipline, okay?”

They all salute. “We promise!” they declare. You sigh. You suppose that's the best you're going to get.

Well. You turn and walk off to see Griselda shaking hands with a very dirty and greasy but no less cheerful looking Perrine. “We'll see you guys around for FleetFest! I'll be sure to pay Gertrude a visit as well!”

Griselda smiles at Perrine. “You seemed to go easy on us this match. I was expecting better.”

“Hmph. Match locale. Plus, the League didn't authorize my request to mount Bazookas on the tanks, at least not unless I find historical evidence that it did infact happen,” she says. “But hey, if they could mount it on planes, they can mount it on tanks. We'll have to see though. Though, in exchange however. I want to gift you guys a few things.”

“What?” asks Griselda. Perrine waves it over.

Coming into sight was a truck backing in towards your tanks. Mounted on them now were rockets. “See, I did a bit of research. Both of your tanks happen to be compatible for rocket rails. I even checked with the league. All been approved.”

Griselda stares at Perrine. “... well.”

“Groovy,” you say simply.

That's it for tonight's LGA2. I am going to go die now so thanks for bearing with me. Hope you all enjoyed.

Here are your highlights.

- LGA: Suvorov snipes friendly flag tank to immobilize it, and allow her to bodyblock shots from incoming Ostwinds. Kills three Ostwinds before going down, saving the Flag tank and the match.

- KGB: Oryola Kuznetsov earns 100th kill, now leads EL in kills.

- SGC: Rosehip jumps large river and crashes into enemy flag tank, destroying both in the process.

- CG: Meryl Hoffmeister tries out new Tulip rockets on her Firefly, destroys three tanks in less than 3 seconds.

- GWMA: Carolina Greene rams through two wooden buildings to flank hidden flag tank.

The league table has also been updated.

See you next time.

Great stuff GS, I look forward to finding out those All Star Results this week. LGA and armchair tankery analysts angered that Ellie didn't make the fan vote. Meanwhile Ellie is going to be so god damn blindsided when she's in, she'll end up a target of so much teasing.

But first, we have to show the new students around tomorrow.

Well holy shit, Meryl has been keeping busy, hasn't she?

Also, we're third in total kills. Which is pretty impressive, given our size and stature. And it feels nice being one of two unbeaten teams still around.

Are we going to use the rockets? Will it fit our current playstyle?

> Are we going to use the rockets? Will it fit our current playstyle?
It's tricky, they're good as a close range panic button, but they can't be aimed just preset to common engagement ranges (historically one to 400 and the other 800 yards was typical, though we'd likely go for more like 200 and 400 given the close combat nature of tankery) and while they won't detonate from standard MG fire, it will be liable to disable them or cause them to misfire. Autocannons, incendiary bullets and any tank shell with an explosive element that strikes them however has a very good chance of detonating the warhead. And to top all that off, they're not even that powerful in the AT roles because they're HE, not HEAT. Add to that they'll get caught on foliage and shrubbery and a lot of the time they'll be more trouble than they're worth. After all in real life they weren't an anti-tank measure, they were for uprooting dug in infantry or gun teams.

I can see them being useful against certain teams though, like really brawling-focussed or light tank heavy(ha) teams where the close engagement ranges will allow hits and they can be used to stun or knock out multiple tanks in quick succession. They're also very simple, so mounting and demounting as required for a match is a definite possibility, or even explosive bolt detaching them mid-match if we don't want them anymore.
