You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and things are beginning to fall into place.

“So what happens if someone cuts this thing?” you ask aloud, referring to the artifact that's supposed to grant extraordinary power over space and matter to whoever cuts it with their zanpakuto. Yoruichi looks up from her reading, and Kisuke turns around from his computer monitor.

“We both get branded traitors is what happens,” your wife asserts. “Even if we're vindicated by time, neither of our careers would ever recover.”

Kisuke shakes his head. “I get where you're going, and damned if I don't like the idea itself. It's clever and simple, elegant really. But I don't think it's worth it.”

You shrug. “Hey, I didn't say anything about cutting it myself. I just wanted to know what happens to the physical object when it gets used. Can it be stolen or destroyed, that sort of thing.”

“You mean you weren't planning to... you know.” Yoruichi seems a little surprised.

“I mean, we were all thinking it,” you admit candidly. “But if between the three of us and all our resources we can't keep one little stamp safe from maybe three attackers, maybe we'd deserve to be exiled.”

“... point,” Yoruichi admits. “So, we come up with a plan to defend the Ōin?”

A frantic beeping from the computer nearby draws Uraharas attention, and his expression sours. “Well, you'd better think fast. Three powerful reiatsu signatures just appeared near the execution grounds, two of them are arrancar... and the third matches our mystery attacker.”

Something about the way he phrases that strikes you as odd. Many people underestimate Kisuke, and you may well be among them. But there is one thing you do know about him, and that's the fact that he always tries to avoid saying things that are incorrect. Which of course means that if he simply doesn't know a specific detail he prefers to simply omit that part from his statements: describing the third signature as a “mystery attacker” means that he doesn't know how to classify it, which in turn means that it's not clearly definable a shinigami, or as an arrancar, or as being part-divine. And if Kisuke doesn't know what this newcomer even is, none of you can tell what it might be capable of doing.

“That's not good,” you frown. “I guess all we can do is go and face them directly, see what happens.”

Kisuke raises a skeptical eyebrow. “With no idea what we're facing?”

“Hey, poking it always produces some sort of reaction,” you shrug, “so at least that'll give us something to work with.”

“... well, you're not wrong.”

“And more to the point,” you continue, pointing towards the door, “Yoruichi's already on her way.”

With a quick glance to confirm that what you said was true, Kisuke abruptly slouches in a total loss of composure. “Yeah... of course she would, wouldn't she? She always was the decisive one.”

He then turns back to face you, but you too have just departed to catch up with your decisive wife.

“So, you want to play this the stealthy way?” you ask as a particularly long stride finally catches you up with Yoruichi.

Her focus is still straight ahead as you rapidly close with the intruders. “I suppose it would be prudent. Let's slow up and suppress our reiatsu.”

The two of you take the appropriate steps to conceal yourselves, not going so far as to use any sort of fragile kidō to further the effect, and find yourselves creeping up on the three reiatsu concentrations you detected earlier. Landing lightly on the railing of a high wooden deck overlooking a wide courtyard not too far from the Kuchiki manor, you take up prone positions from which you can spy on the intruders.

Two are obviously arrancars: you can see from here that their mask fragments run down the crowns of their heads like toothy mohawks, each with a dagger-like blade sheathed behind her head. The one with red hair you reason should be the one responsible for scorching the scene where Shunsui was attacked, and the blue-haired one should be the lightning-user... at least in your experience that's how things like this should work. But the third, though he wears a white mask over his face, does not feel quite like an arrancar to you. His hair is dark, and his black robes are covered by a tattered cloak. You're not entirely sure from this distance whether it was once white, or if it was always a sort of dingy color.

The masked man turns his head, the six eyeslits of his mask pointing towards you. Have you been noticed already?

>Sneak attack. At worst you get to see how the intruders respond.
>Head down there, issue a challenge-slash-threat to the intruders.

Do we have a rough guestimate on how capable each are individually?
>>
>>1151808
Negative. Arrancars have rather unpredictable resting powers and releases: it tends to be true that stronger at rest means a greater increase in release but it doesn't scale directly.

The third individual is almost impossible to get a good read on.

Alrighty then, give me 3d10 to remain hidden. DC 17 to avoid drawing too much suspicion, DC 22 to find a clear opportunity to attack. Best of three.

For a few moments it's not totally clear whether the masked man is going to retaliate in some fashion or whether he's going to ignore you. But eventually he seems to accept that you're going to be shadowing him for a while. You think he must have said something about it because the red-haired arrancar girl looks towards you, only to wince and overcorrect, staring resolutely ahead as if having been scolded. The masked man glances back at you before leaving the courtyard, his two arrancar companions in close pursuit.

“Let's go,” you nod to Yoruichi, not needing to tell her anything more of your plan. She knows it by heart, since it's the Onmitsu way of doing things: keep a steady position behind and to the side, remain out of direct line of sight, and proceed as fast as possible without using too much reiatsu to do so. It's a little harder for you to do since by definition hirenkyaku isn't as stealthy as shunpō, but you get the impression that the three intruders you're tailing are in no particular hurry.

After a few minutes your marks come to a stop near several weaker shinigami, in the shadow of the execution grounds.

“I'm getting closer,” Yoruichi mutters. “Not gonna use kidō here either, it might spook the masked wonder down there.”

“Good point,” you agree, leaving the consummate professional to make that call for you.

Nearby is a steeply-pitched roofline, some sort of little Buddhist temple you think, which makes for a perfect perch from which to watch what happens next. A trio of shinigami wearing the uniforms of the Kidō Corps approach them, and one holds out a small wooden box towards the masked man. His right hand reaches out from under his battered cloak to accept the box, then the two arrancar draw their zanpakuto. The three shinigami don't react to it at all, as if accepting what anyone in this situation must realize is coming...

Without bothering to communicate, you and your wife leap into action. Any desire to disguise your presence is abandoned in favor of speed as you attack the masked man and Yoruichi draws swords to counter the two arrancar. Blades clash, two short swords locking against Yoruichi's stout butterfly swords as Tenkotsuki collides with a long sword that looks for all the world like Hyōrinmaru. The man only holds his weapon in one hand, and so you take the opportunity to release Tenkotsuki with your left hand and throw a punch at his mask.

He reels as the porcelain shatters to reveal a youthful face underneath, the right side of which is badly scarred. The man glares at you angrily as one of the arrancar shouts in alarm.

“What the hell!? Who are you?”

The scarred man scowls at you. “That's Captain Shihōin, the executive commander of the Onmitsukidō. And it's been a while, but judging by her uniform her companion must be Captain Kusajishi, of the Ninth Division.”

“Am I wrong?”

Yoruichi's tone is one of false amusement. “My reputation precedes me.”

“It's hard to forget the name of the woman responsible for your death,” Kusaka counters. He senses your blade pushing harder against his, reaching up to grasp his zanpakuto in two hands and send you sliding back on your toes. As you recover you note that he withdraws his heavily bandaged left arm back under his cloak. “As for Kusajishi here, I'm not quite sure how I recall her name.”

“You have us at a disadvantage, boy,” Yoruichi grumbles, a scraping of steel against steel announcing that she's forced the two arrancar back. “Who might you be?”

“I am Kusaka Sōjirō, formerly a student at the Academy here in the Seireitei,” he growls, even his introduction needlessly aggressive. “Don't think I'm here out of nostalgia.”

“You three, get out of here!” Yoruichi demands loudly. “Hey, are you even listening?”

“And so what do these three have to do with it?” you demand, positioning yourself between Kusaka and the Kidō Corps members.

Yoruichi growls as she fends off another attack from the arrancars. “And why are you so determined to get rid of them?”

“I had thought they'd outlived their use and become a liability,” Kusaka replies cannily, taking a small step towards you. “But perhaps I was mistaken.”

“Bakudo 30: Shitotsu Sansen!” a voice declares, and you feel three moderately strong but still very effective fangs of reiatsu slam into your back. A surprised yelp from Yoruichi tells you she's under attack as well, but your main concern is that Kusaka is moving to take advantage of the momentary opportunity. Straining against the spell you hear a shattering sound, and you manage to raise your hands quickly enough to grab him around his left wrist and place Tenkotsuki in the way.

“Reign over the frosted heavens, Hyōrinmaru!” he shouts even as you kick him in the ribs, and two things happen. Your arms ice over down to the elbows before you can backpedal quickly enough, and your own fingers tear off the wrappings around Kusaka's left arm. You're treated to a disgusting spectacle before he can hide the limb again: pallid white flesh, with what are unmistakably three open eyes tucked between several of the major muscle groups.

A flex of your wrists shatters the ice: numbing, but thankfully not all that damaging. Yoruichi suddenly appears at your side, and the arrancars to either side of Kusaka, who glares at you angrily.

“Those three seemed to be under his control somehow,” Yoruichi tells you, directing your attention towards the three prone forms of the Kidō experts. “One of their masks came off, there was some sort of mark there. Like a tattoo, or a seal.”

“Forget that shit,” you mutter. “That freak's got eyes on his arm.”

“I... honestly don't know what to do with that information,” Yoruichi admits, her expressions worked up in overwhelming confusion. “Seriously, what the hell?”

“So you saw...” Kusaka grumbles. “That complicates things. Yin. Yang. We're leaving.”

“Do you really think we're about to let you?” Yoruichi growls.

The two arrancar begin to open a garganta behind their apparent master.

“In a word... yes.”

Whatever Kusaka's up to, you're willing to follow your hunch that these two arrancar aren't just trying to help him escape. No, this is a man who bled and died for bullshit reasons at the whims of Soul Society's elites... nothing so simple as turning tail while he's ahead. He means to make all the shinigami suffer as he did, and you doubt he's the type to let an opportunity to do so pass without leaping at it.

“Hyapporankan!” one of the previously-fallen shinigami declares even as you close the distance with Yin and Yang. You hear it soon enough to turn and slash the iron rods out of the air with a single spinning sweep of Tenkotsuki's lethal edge, hardly slowing to appreciate the effect so as not to give the redheaded arrancar an opening to exploit. Yoruichi has an even more elegant plan.

“Shunkō!” she roars, coating her arms and hands with powerful reiatsu that arcs and dances wildly as she reaches out to grab two iron rails from the air. With a dash she uses them to impale the blue-haired arrancar: once with a thrust through one wrist and the other as she spins and lodges the weapon through the back of her victim's shoulder.

“Yin!” the redhead shouts in alarm, failing to notice your approach.

You wind up with Tenkotsuki, the muscles of your right arm and shoulder bulging as you store as much power there as you can manage before releasing it all at once.

“Kamaitachi!”

The powerful zanjutsu sends Yang hurtling to the ground, gouging out a massive chunk of wall before crashing into a courtyard that's immediately full of dust. You think you even see an uprooted tree come down on top of a nearby roof, which if you'd been more confident that had been a fatal blow you might've laughed at.

Kusaka, now temporarily deprived of his escort, simply sighs in exasperation.

“I told those two not to underestimate a Captain,” he grumbles, now revealing his left arm from under his cloak. “Now I have to go and use something like this... stupid women.”

“You don't have to...” Yin begins tentatively, still pinned in midair by the silvery rails.

“It doesn't matter, I'd have had to use it anyway at some point.”

The three eyes that have been open, each of which has a massive dilated pupil ringed with a sickly yellow iris and a black sclera, begin to change. The pupils contract back down to a 'normal' proportion, then each eye slowly shuts. A sidelong glance reveals that the three men under his control slump to the ground... one eye for each? You can't be sure of the exact mechanics of this technique, but now at least you have some idea of its limitations.

You also can reasonably assume a few of its characteristics... most notably that a target doesn't have to be conscious to fall under his control. Yoruichi hit those three shinigami hard, and it's not like she's out of practice at all: not a single shinigami below Lieutenant level could possibly have kept their lights on after taking such a pummeling. Honestly, you wouldn't have been surprised if they'd been killed.

“I'll give you one last offer to withdraw before things get ugly,” Kusaka warns you. “It's in all our interests to just walk away at this point.”

Yoruichi snickers quietly to herself. “Ah, I get it.”

“What is it you think you 'get', Captain?”

“You're not confident you can control the Ōin, are you?” she surmises with a confident smirk. “That's it, isn't it? You haven't mastered Bankai, so you're not sure that your reiatsu control stacks up against a real Captain. And if you can't fully control the Ōin...”

“... it becomes a gambit,” you complete the thought for her. “A calculated risk, and you've calculated that your odds aren't great. Are they?”

“You two infuriate me,” Kusaka growls, “almost worse than that backstabber Toshi. I almost want to use this technique on you just to watch you cut each other's throats... but no. My offer still stands.”

“Well, dearest Yoruichi,” you sigh wearily, “I do believe that leaves us but one recourse.”

Your wife nods stoically. “Indeed it does, dearest Riku. Indeed it does.”

“Just fucking try...” you purr, taking a backwards step as Yoruichi does the same.

She nearly clotheslines an off-guard Yin while you kick Yang in the face as she staggers to her feet, then you sidestep. For a moment a mark is left on the ground where you stood a moment earlier, serving to confirm your suspicion: he may have several eyes on that freaky arm of his, but the number is there mostly to compensate for how hard it is to aim. The mark disappears as Kusaka reverses the technique, then you move to strike Yang again. This time you duck under a blast of fire and aim a sweeping strike at her gut with Tenkotsuki. She leaves a thin line of red across Yang's body, but the arrancar just managed to backpedal out of the way.

Again, Kusaka misses. The crackle of electricity and a surge of reiatsu tells you that Yoruichi is having just as much success as you on her end. Of your two opponents, it's Yang that cracks first.

“Ignite!” she calls out, her body bursting into flame. Instead of hearing the name of her zanpakuto, her voice simply disappears amid a roaring pyre. Her speed increases, almost enough to give you a decent challenge, but her new form does make her that much harder to actually hit. There seems to be little tangible about her, like you're literally trying to cut a bonfire.

Kusaka, meanwhile, has grown increasingly frustrated by your antics. “Enough! Bankai: Daiguren Hyōrinmaru!”

The ball that is somehow Yang pauses as the air around the battlefield grows cold, sharp crystals forming in many places like foot-long raindrops suspended in mid-fall. She withdraws, seemingly unnerved by the cold.

“I'm sick of you two taking me so lightly,” Kusaka fumes, before what seems like a baker's dozen eyes open on his arm all at once. “Try dodging this!”

You instinctively dash to your side, trying to foil whatever plan Kusaka's devised...

… only to be hit across your jaw by your own left hand.

“It seems your left hand is no longer your own,” Tenkotsuki muses quietly. “Quite unnerving... but ultimately not enough.”

Oh shit, they actually did literally graft that guy onto his arm, didn't they? Fuck.
>>
>>1152332
“What kind of pathetic woman do you take me for, child?” you snarl through gritted teeth. “So you took one arm... congratu-fucking-lations.”

Your left arm hits you in the cheek a second time, leaving what feels like a nasty bruise in the making... but you don't so much as flinch. Even from here you can tell that Kusaka expected more, and he's a little disturbed that he's not gotten it.

“When did you assume I couldn't take the same punishment I could dish out?” you continue as your own arm hits you a third time. Annoyed, you quickly slit the inside of your elbow and allow the limb to fall limply to your side. “There. That's one nuisance dealt with.”

Yoruichi takes a moment to glance down at you. “You feeling okay?”

“Yeah, using the crystals as lenses to aim his attack caught me off guard,” you admit. “I didn't think he was that clever.”

“Is that really the best you can do?” a third voice muses as Kisuke steps out from behind a nearby wall, clad in a reiatsu-blocking cloak. “No more tricks to show me?”

“Ever the scientist,” Yoruichi groans. “How long were you waiting?”

“Long enough for my purposes,” Kisuke shrugs.

“If you want to settle a beef with Hitsugaya that can be arranged,” you insist, staring Kusaka down as Yin and Yang rally to him. “Even your arrancar companions are free to go if they'd like.”

The two exchange nervous glances, clearly considering your proposal.

“But the box stays with us,” you conclude. “That part is non-negotiable.”

It doesn't take Kusaka long to reach a verdict. “No deal.”

The box comes out from within his cloak, and he's clearly prepared to slice through it with his Hyōrinmaru.

Isn't that ideal for this situation? Shame we already let them know we have it.
>>
>>1152432
For that matter, couldn't we aim at THE BOX and knock it out of his hands without activating or damaging it that way?

You need to get there immediately to stop his swing, and you know precisely which technique you can use to do so. It's a risk, but if you pull it off properly it offers the best chance of success. So with an exceedingly short moment of mental preparation, you use hirenkyaku and suddenly accelerate yourself even beyond that speed with a shunpō.

The last thing you see before the world around you melts away is the two arrancar moving almost in slow motion, either reacting to your first step or to something around you that you can't see.

The first thing you see after moving is Kusaka, staring in disbelief at his own fingers... or what's left of them. You had been aiming to slice his entire arm off and deal with this problematic special power of his and the seal in a single stroke, but something must have gotten in your way. Instead it appears that you took all five of his fingers off at about the first knuckle. You also note that his two arrancar are in bad shape, one sitting up from the crater she created to find her twin bloodied and beaten. It seems Kusaka's attack slashed and froze across Yang's back at the same time as a Byakurai pierced her gut and Tenkotsuki took off her arm at the elbow. Yin quietly pleads with her to move, to no avail.

“You...” Kusaka glares at you, wrath distorting his features as his teeth clench hard enough to crack and draw blood. “You!

“Yes,” you reply calmly. “Me. Excellent observational skills, Kusaka.”

It feels strange. Your body tingles not with raw power, but a refined power. A confidence and awareness of your own superiority that would cross the border into arrogance were it not so deeply grounded in an inarguable reality.

“How?” comes his simple demand as you glance at your wife. She stares back at you with wide, almost fearful eyes.

You don't like that.

“How many?” you ask quietly, your voice carrying a familiarly resonant tone.

She blinks once. “Nine. And they're... well, they're black.”

“Well, that is most unexpected,” you muse, turning your attention to Kisuke. “I intended to take off your arm, Kusaka. But your arrancars' willingness to sacrifice themselves for you has backfired magnificently. As you can see, I have accidentally done what you were too fearful to do.”

“For now, at least, the Ōin is mine.”

Take Kusaka's mind control arm off, as well. While that's a fun way to create an Arrancar/Shinigami hybrid, it's also somewhat offensive.

Nope nope nope. As much as I want to be in peak performance power with the Ōin, that's a fuckton of lines we're crossing. Unless the Ōin is already inseperable the moment we cut the damn thing in attempt to prevent Kusaka from doing what we accidentally did.

In this form you feel like you can do anything... though you must admit that even you find yourself a bit wary about that sort of power being at your disposal. Certainly, no one else must be wholly comfortable with it either. But even with that admission, you can't help but want to use it, almost as if that power has a will of its own which runs subtly counter to your conscious efforts at restraint. A primal, frightening, nigh-insatiable urge to show the entire cosmos that you can dominate it with little more than a thought and a fleeting gesture.

Surely it couldn't hurt to use it, just once. Just to indulge. To learn how it must feel to be a goddess in every sense.

Reaching out your left hand, the joint now repaired without your having directed such measures, you focus on Kusaka's left arm. Even before he can open its extra eyes the limb is crushed, as if subjected to the pressure of the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean. Blood spurts forth from ruined eye sockets and Kusaka screams, more from horror than any pain his mind is capable of comprehending. Then you release your grip on the space around him, only to focus your power on a small spot in front of him. With a thrust of one finger you push that point back through his body, penetrating both of his spiritual pressure points with nothing more than distorted empty space, twisting through his chest.

“That...” you mutter to yourself. “That felt too satisfying. My instincts are simultaneously screaming at me to stop and screaming for more... this power is wrong. I am not ready to handle it.”

With that pronouncement you turn your left palm upwards, focusing the alien powers into the space directly above it. You sway on your feet as the Ōin materializes in your grasp, and immediately pass the damned thing off to your wife.

“If you can't destroy it,” you mutter, “bury it under so many barriers it'll never see the light of day again. By all accounts it shouldn't even exist.”

“How did you do that?” Yoruichi asks, eyes still locked on you as if unsure what to expect.

“I rearranged space to suit my needs,” you explain, “or at least the thing I became for a few moments did. Kusaka is no longer a threat to anyone... but even so, and even though he was wronged by the Seireitei long ago, he should face trial for what he's tried to do.”

“Agreed,” Yoruichi nods, seemingly satisfied that you've returned to normal. “On all counts.”

- INTERMISSION -
“So, how exactly do you change into a cat, anyway?”

Yoruichi, who until this point had been lounging after a long training session, sighs quietly. It's her old friend and current Third Seat Urahara who speaks.

“Good luck with that,” he all but snickers. “I've been asking that question for almost a hundred years.”

“Several generations ago...” Yoruichi begins, as Urahara sits bolt upright from where he's been relaxing nearby.

“Wait, are you actually going to tell her? Just like that?”

“Keep interrupting me and see what happens, Kisuke,” Yoruichi grumbles, shooting a glare at the man. “Several generations ago, there was a sickness in the Seireitei. The leader of the Shihōin at the time lost his wife and their unborn child to it, and he himself saw his strength eroded. Without a strong central figure our clan teetered on the edge of collapse.”

“The head first sought out a political marriage, though no family would interject themselves into such a precarious situation and he found even his allies kept him at arm's length. Next he sought out the advice of monks and wise men, who offered only prayers and spiritual advice. No heir was forthcoming. Finally, he begged the gods and spirits for intercession... and it was then that he found an answer to his prayers.”

“A senri.”

“What is that?” Riku asks, turning to glance at her Captain and mentor. “I haven't heard of such a spirit.”

“A senri is an old leopard cat, progenitor of the myths regarding nekomata and bakeneko in modern Japan,” Yoruichi explains, careful to draw distinctions between very similar concepts. “A shapeshifter that can take the form of a beautiful woman. The senri offered to bear the clan head an heir... but in exchange, when the young heir came into his inheritance, the senri expected payment. The senri expected the father's soul.”

“One soul for another,” Riku muses quietly. “It's fair, in a twisted sense.”

“I agree,” Yoruichi nods. “And so did the clan head. A few months later a beautiful baby boy was born to the Shihōin clan.”

The trio of shinigami are quiet for a moment, as one collects her thoughts and the others hang on her words. “For a few years they were seemingly a happy family. The child was brought up with excellent training in politics and martial arts, in many ways setting the standards for my own upbringing. But the mother grew restless... she wanted her soul, though bound by her agreement she was obliged to wait.”

“So what happened?” Riku asks.

Yoruichi leans back, an almost self-satisfied grin on her face. “The clan head died. Lingering health problems from the same disease which took his wife and son, an end which of course he no doubt predicted. The senri was denied her prize, and was chased off from the Seireitei while her son became the new head of our Clan. He was only six years old, but possessed great spiritual power. Descendants of gods and spirits supposedly have that gift for many generations, spawning extremely powerful scions. It wouldn't surprise me if every noble house had something in their history like mine does.”

“And so he could also turn into a cat?” Urahara asks.

“Nope,” Yoruichi shakes her head. “Only the women descended from that senri and her child can do it. It was a real shock for the poor kid when he was trying to raise his first and only daughter. So much of a shock that he prohibited her from marrying, only to find that his granddaughter possessed the same supernatural ability, albeit with much greater control.”

“Eventually it passed into common acceptance that women in my direct lineage are stupidly powerful and can turn into cats. The old stories aren't spoken of outside our family for obvious reasons, and in fact any mention of my unusual talent by other families is considered taboo.”

“Nobody outside my immediate relatives knew the truth until just now. At least, nobody still alive."

“So is that really true, then?” Riku muses quietly. “I mean, it seems hard to believe”

Yoruichi lifts her legs, then pushes herself up off the ground and onto her feet. “Who knows? It was a long time ago, and happened to someone else... all I know is what I can see and experience and learn for myself.”

“Isn't that right?” she asks, reaching a hand down to her student with a knowing smile.

Yang may have been your enemy, but so far she hasn't really done much to earn the amount of abuse that's come her way and you're still not sure what her reasons for serving Kusaka were in the first place. So even if they decide to make themselves your enemies, the reasons for their apparent loyalty and anything they can tell you about recent events in Hueco Mundo would be useful knowledge.

“Give me a moment,” you tell Yoruichi, descending towards Yin where she's crouched next to her twin.

“What do you want!?” she demands, drawing her zanpakuto.

“A little more discretion from you,” you reply calmly, raising your hands in self-defense. “I'm not here to make things worse... is Yang here your sister? She needs medical attention.”

Yin nods nervously, the look on her face saying she still doesn't believe what she's hearing. “But why would you help us? What purpose does this serve for you?”

You take a knee, forcing Yin's hands away from her sister so that you can examine her wounds. “Because allowing a prisoner to suffer for lack of medical attention is below my standards.”

“So now we're your prisoners?” Yin demands loudly.

“If you still want to fight I'd be happy to oblige,” you warn her with a glare. “Or you could let me help your sister, I'll ask you some questions, then you can leave.”

“You'd let us go free?”

Having identified the most severe life-threatening injury, the blood loss from her severed arm, you set to work stemming the tide so that you can repair the deeper damage more carefully without the pressing threat of exsanguination. “Do you work for Aizen?”

“Never!” Yin insists.

“Then sure,” you continue. “The Central 46 may insist on us holding you for a while, but I see no reason to do so any longer than absolutely necessary.”

Yin watches as you work, a white glow radiating from your hands. “So you hate Aizen too?”

“I wouldn't say hate,” you reply thoughtfully. “He's taken concrete steps to threaten everything I love though, so he's certainly my enemy.”

“And his arrancars?” she presses. “Are they your enemies too?”

“No more so than anyone else who serves him,” you shrug. “I have nothing against arrancar in principle... it may sound like the butt of a joke, but some of my closest friends were vasto lordes or adjuchas.”

“You say the words like you know about us,” she muses. “You speak of friends, which is odd coming from a monster.”

You can't help but smirk. “What can I say, arrogant pricks bring out my angry side. But that power wasn't my own.”

“I'm sorry,” you apologize quietly. “I'm afraid my skills can't replace your sister's arm, so I have to focus on sealing the wounds and regenerating everything else. Do either of you have high-speed regeneration still, or did you both trade that for your hierro?”

“Hierro,” Yin replies, shaking her head. “Neither of us were aware that it was going to end up being a trade.

“That seems pretty common in my experience,” you admit, carefully sealing the hole in Yang's gut. The edges of the wound slowly advance towards each other in an almost sickening, slow creep. “There may be a chance someone more skilled can induce the tissue to regenerate there, but now isn't the time.”

“So, how did Kusaka come by that arm? I don't doubt he'd rather die than tell us anything anymore.”

“You can tell it wasn't his?” Yin asks, clearly surprised. “Well, it came from a hollow. An adjuchas who called that power 'amore', or something like that. Said it controlled 'sovereignty' over whatever his eyes locked onto.”

“That's a weird way of phrasing it,” you grumble. “But it does support what I kind of assumed, that he survived by absorbing and grafting bits of hollow as he went. But how he gained that ability... that I can't say yet.”

“Neither can I,” Yin admits. “He never told us that part, only that he intended to get revenge on the Soul Society. Rather than follow Aizen, as others like us chose to, we followed Kusaka.”

“Others?”

“Other natural arrancar,” Yin continues. “We are among the few.”

“If it's any consolation, you may have made the right call,” you inform the arrancar. “Three of those other 'natural' arrancar who served Aizen are in our custody.”

“Which ones?”

“Dordoni, Gantenbainne, and Cirucci.”

Yin snorts derisively. “Gantenbainne I could see, he always seemed reasonable. But Cirucci? How the hell'd you get that bitch to cooperate?”

“Her saketsu and hakusui were stabbed out when we fought,” you explain. “She has no spiritual power.”

“You... took her power?”

“Yes, same as I did to Kusaka."

“That's... remarkably decent of you.”

“I try,” you chuckle. “There, your sister's life is out of danger, for the time being.”

Question:
>Bambi: If/when you retire, do you plan on starting up a family? Raise some kids and all that jazz? Or are the insane memories of you snuffing your subordinates too much of a deterrent? Pardon my German.
>BG9: Query: What is the battery life of your cranial life support system? Do you require a recharge station? Does Comrade "Explode" assist with your requests such as changing the TV channel we installed in your cell?
>Riku: Dear god, the Ōin box is like Spice to you. We need to send you to Unohana for addiction rehab pronto! The box must move (on a monthly basis).
>Tenkotsuki: gold tails or black tails?

A question brought up from your ask.fm: Q.Some people questioned Riku's loyalty due to Quincy past life, they must not of read her publications on sniper and anti-sniper tactics. It is a good primer on how to respond to a lot of common Quincy tactics too. Could just be obscure outside of the 9th too.
A:Most people assume that sort of tactical knowledge isn't ever going to get put into practice. But the few who gave it a look may not be surprised that Riku was once a Quincy, while also understanding how much of a godsend her sharing that specialist knowledge was.
The question stemming from the above reference: Can one member of the 9th tell a story where knowledge of Riku's past life's profession as a sniper saved their bacon?

>So in the 150 years or so of Riku being in charge of running Seireitei's Arts and Culture Institution, what modern fashion fads caught on in the afterlife outside of 9th division? We know 1970s Hong Kong themed restaurants were a thing in 1st division because the Old Man Yamamoto loved the aesthetic style, and we had TV Broadcasting of mankind's first rocket launch to space with Riku providing live translation, what other fads did Seireitei catch on through the centuries?

>What other knick nacks did Shunsui find in his "father's desk"? Did he find a Gameboy with "Tetris" installed in the back? My (late) grandmother played that thing like a pro despite being 92, so I could easily see Yamamoto play Tetris on a grey brick gameboy.

>Gin: So how many pranks did you set up for Aizen in Silbern before you gave him the middle finger? If you were to guess, how many has Aizen discovered of the total? Do you host prank wars in your division?

“Your sister still needs time to recover,” you insist. “Pick her up and follow me.”

“Where are you taking us?” Yin asks warily, lifting her sister up off the ground with all the delicacy of a mother cradling her child.

“My barracks,” you reply, raising a hand against her immediate protests. “You'll be supervised, but not taken into custody or bothered. When I say she needs to recover I mean it, so far as I'm concerned she's still a patient and not a prisoner.”

Along the way back you need to slow yourself so that Yin can keep up with her load, and that gives you time to call in a request. Halibel doesn't answer immediately, but oddly enough someone does pick up Starrk's phone.

“Hey Lilynette,” you begin without even hearing who it was that answered.

“How'd you know it was me?”

“Cause Starrk doesn't pick up his phone when he's napping,” you explain. “Listen Lilynette, I need you to do something for me.”

“Shoot.”

“I need you to find someone, Apacci, Halibel, hell even Starrk would do. Just an arrancar who could watch a couple of guests for me for a little while.”

“You mean guests like... trouble?”

“You felt those three intruders earlier?” you ask.

You get the feeling Lilynette's nodding on the other end of the line, so you continue. “Yoruichi's taking one of them into custody with Captain Urahara, and I'm bringing the other two in. One of them is hurt and needs a chance to recover.”

“Got it,” Lilynette barks, as if accepting an order. “I'll go get Apacci, she'll know what to do!”

Yeah. You do that, Lilynette.

By the time you arrive at the Ninth Division's barracks Apacci is already waiting for you. She narrows her eyes at the newcomers, but otherwise does nothing to reveal her true feelings about the situation. “So these two are the ones you want me to watch?”

“They shouldn't be much trouble,” you shrug. “I mean, one's not even conscious.”

“And you want me to talk to them while I'm there anyway, right?”

As blunt as she is perceptive. “It's your call. But given your different situations it might make an interesting conversation, wouldn't you agree?”

“If by interesting you mean tedious and by conversation you mean lecture, sure,” Apacci shrugs before motioning to Yin with a wave of her arm. “Come on, medic's offices are this way.”

Having taken care of that bit of business, you're left to return to your office and await the inevitable stream of calls from the Central 46, your fellow Captains, and hopefully from Yoruichi and Kisuke once Kusaka is secured.

What a god damned mess.

- OMAKE: The Other Half of the Story -

Captain Shihōin Yoruichi has an unusual ability, even by the standards set by shinigami Captains. She is one of the few in the Shihōin clan who can transform her body into that of a cat: in her case a small, innocuous-looking creature with luxurious black fur and a magnificent tail... or so she would insist.

She prefers this form in a lot of ways. Shinigami in general tend to attract a lot of attention out in the Rukongai, where the spiritual power of even those without seats places them head and shoulders above the rest. Captains are very nearly revered as gods given flesh by some, and even those who are less given to dramatics can't help but gather to take a good long gander on the rare occasions when one turns up. So whenever they have cause to go wandering, the women of the Shihōin clan tend to make use of their unusual skill to avoid making an unwanted scene.

“It smells like rain,” she muses, glancing upwards at the dark clouds that fill the sky. “What a miserable day to be outside.”

Suddenly, from somewhere in a nearby alley, there's a shout. “Jeez, it was only like twenty Kan! And the box... but still, isn't this an overreaction!?”

“You'll answer for it one way or the other, boy!” a man shouts in response as Yoruichi hops across a rooftop to peer down at the scene.

I'm a girl you blind asshole!” a scrappy-looking young woman protests, glancing at a trio of knives impaled into the plaster facade behind her. “And I was starving!”

“Then you should've starved!” the shopkeep roars back at her, before his anger evaporates into confusion.

Understandable, since the young woman just used hirenkyaku. If it had been shunpō maybe Yoruichi would have understood, but hirenkyaku is a very specific technique for some nobody in Hokutan to use.

“Maybe not such a miserable day after all,” the feline observer muses. “There's no way...”

By the time she catches up with the strange woman, Yoruichi almost regrets her words before. The rain drives against her fur in wind-driven sheets, until she drops down into a back alley and out of the wind. Now it's just wet. Tucked against the back of the alleyway is a low shack made from what looks like leftover wood, held together with rope, spare nails, and the liberal application of wishful thinking.

The young woman starts at the sound of Yoruichi's paws hitting the ground, and each only gets a glimpse of the other as Yoruichi dashes as quickly as she can back out of the alley without arousing too much suspicion. She may have had a hand over her chest, but it was clear that the mystery woman is covered in fine scars from head to toe and she has hardly a scrap of fat on her body. She certainly has the look of someone who's spent her whole life fighting, standing there in the cold rain washing blood off herself like she does it every other day.

“Damn,” Yoruichi grumbles to herself. “I couldn't see it...”

With a start, Yoruichi's obliged to resort to shunpō to avoid having the woman catch up with her, leaving the poor thing sopping wet and confused as she stands in the middle of the street.

“There has to be something to her,” she muses, doubling back to peer down at the woman as she heads into a store. Having bought a small stockpile of durable staple foods to stuff away in her hovel, the young woman curls up in some dirty blankets and stops moving.

The next few days pass in boring, mundane routine. The woman makes a few repairs to her home to keep out the rain, but otherwise spends most of her time sheltering against the rain. The exception is when she steps out to exercise: not exactly awe-inspiring routines by any stretch of the imagination, but enough to confirm Yoruichi's suspicions that the object of her current fascination has a lot of experience fighting and keen instincts. She'd definitely be worth recruiting, but something about her still bothers the Captain.

Finally, the day comes when the woman's food supplies start to dwindle. As if having suddenly resolved some internal debate, she rises to her feet and takes off running across the rooftops. She snags a nice yukata off a clothes line, then uses hirenkyaku to commit a rather daring daylight robbery at a second home. She snags the sort of accessories that really sell the whole outfit, before returning to her shack to down a quick meal of crackers and water.

It's when the woman changes into her ill-gotten attire that Yoruichi spots the very thing she'd simultaneously hoped and dreaded that she might: a familiar scar across her back, right where her heart would be.

Yoruichi trails her mark to a back alley in Hokutan's shopping arcades, picking out her way by lamplight until she catches up to the scene of a robbery-in-progress. Two men think they've got her cornered here, as she seems to size the leader of the two up. She grins, cracking her knuckles...

“Ah, this is the moment!” Yoruichi purrs in excitement.

“Who the hell are you supposed to be!?” the robber demands as a ragged-looking old shinigami uses a shunpō to place himself between the young woman and her attacker.

God damn it, way to ruin the moment. "I'd like to know too."
>2/?
>>
>>1159545
The swordsman laughs. "I'm Kojiro Okina... but to evil-doers, I'm known as "The Grand Master of Flash"!"

Yoruichi rolls her eyes as the second thug takes a step back. "You mean the former Shinigami? Who mastered the "flash-step"?"

"That's right, scum. In this district my shunpō are second to none."

Well, they're the third fastest at the moment, and a distant third at that. But he doesn't realize that yet.

"Oh, thank you!" the woman tells the self-proclaimed 'Grand Master of Flash'. It seems like all she can do not to sneer when she says it... she and Yoruichi both know that she's faster, and to Yoruichi the name is so obviously a rip off her own that it hurts.

"No matter," he insists before flash-stepping towards the first mugger and punching him in the gut. Or rather, "punching" him. Yoruichi is intimately familiar with what a punch is supposed to look like, and even as a cat she can tell when someone's pulled a punch. It's obvious that the robber doubling over is an act as well.

The robbers scatter, leaving the woman alone with her supposed savior.

"Now then," he turns to her, "would you prefer I escort you back to safety, miss?"

"Since when is your slow ass the fastest?" she asks, wiping at the corner of her eye as she laughs so hard she literally tears up. "That's almost funnier than thinking I wasn't wise to your little game."

"Wha-" the man in black sputters before regaining his composure. "I'm afraid I don't know what you mean, miss. I'll be on my way..."

The deserter tries to back away, but the woman Yoruichi's been tailing is having none of it. Finally, she'll get to see what she's been waiting for.

"Hey lead-butt!" she calls out, "let's see who's really faster!"

As soon as she finishes the sentence the man's eyes widen, and he tries to flash-step away to escape. Now he's having to face the inescapable truth that he only thought he was the "predator" here.

The woman overtakes him in a single stride and delivers a roundhouse kick to his crotch, which sends him flying into the side of a building. Before he can even begin to recover she's on him again, grasping the hilt of his sword.

"Mediocre," she comment, peering at the asauchi under the light of nearby lanterns, "kind of like you, right? But unlike you, it may still be worth something."

The former fastest person in Hokutan groans as the woman who kicked his ass grins down at him.

"Later!"

“It has to be her,” Yoruichi decides. “It can't possibly be her, but it has to be... what the hell do I do?”

In the short term, she elects to track the woman back to her ramshackle home. She watches the woman tuck the sword away, then pause as her stomach grumbles so loud Yoruichi can hear it from the other end of the alleyway. At that exact moment, still uncertain of where all of this will end, Yoruichi makes a fateful decision.

She meows.

The woman turns to see Yoruichi sitting on the gravel, staring patiently at her, waiting to see what sort of response she gives. After a few moments the woman digs into a small bag, pulling out a bit of dried fish.

What is she doing?

Suspecting some sort of trap, Yoruichi tenses her body to flee at a moment's notice. And in her mind it's only right to suspect something: what sort of person spends her days fighting to make a living only to give away her hard-won food to a stray animal?

But much to her surprise, the woman lays the little piece of fish in her hand on the gravel a few paces away with a wry grin. “I know, it seems too good to be true... like it's gotta be a trap, right? Well, I'm too damn tired to try anything. Just eat it and get out of here, you dumb fleabag.”

She... gave me food? After all she went through to get it?

“This is so fucking pathetic, Riku,” she mutters to herself as Yoruichi watches her curl up amid her blankets to rest. She doesn't even make an attempt to sort out her tattered kimono, torn all around the edges from the speed and power of her hirenkyaku. The one pretty thing she owns, ruined in only a day. “So lonely you're talking to a damn cat.”

She wanted the company? She does look rather sad here... and who wouldn't be? How much does she know about her past life?

Riku tries to snuggle down into her blankets as Yoruichi glances back and forth between the fish and the woman. The feline Captain tries her damnedest to see what the former quincy really wants from this situation, before finally coming to the conclusion that she was simply being kind-hearted.

A rarity out here, where even well-established shopowners will run off a starving woman with a knife in hand. That's when Yoruichi makes the second fateful decision.

I want to see what she makes of herself this time around.

“Cut it out, fuzz-butt,” Riku grumbles as Yoruichi paws at her. But when she moves to push the cat away, Yoruichi bites gently down onto her hand. A calculated pressure, not enough to break the skin but just enough to get her attention. Then Yoruichi releases her, darting out to the main road and turning expectantly.

With a sigh of resignation, Riku follows Yoruichi out of Hokutan's main drag and onto the road. “Where are we going?”

Yoruichi stares back over her shoulder in disbelief. Really, how is she gonna react when she learns the truth? This might even turn out to be fun...

That's an amusing look on the other side, King.

If it's not gonna be much trouble for the rest of this quest plot-wise, would it be okay to get a vignette of adjuchas Zommari's final moments before he got Kusaka nommed after this arc is concluded? Just for consideration.

- Chance Encounter: Neliel -

Lieutenant Kusajishi stops dead, staring down a strange figure in a cloak. Like a centaur of old Greek myth she stands proud, bracing herself against the harsh winds that whip Hueco Mundo's sands past her.

“Are you a warrior?” the hollow asks, turning a head like a ram's skull towards the Lieutenant and hefting its own right arm. Instead of a hand she has a long, lance-like protrusion with a long hilt that she tucks under her armpit. Her eyes fall heavily on Kusajishi.

For her part Kusajishi nods slowly. “Yes. I am.”

“And what brings you here?”

The Lieutenant slowly reaches her thumb up and hooks it around the edge of Tenkotsuki's guard, pulling her back into her sheath. “Searching for a fugitive from the Seireitei.”

“And what crime was severe enough to demand that a shinigami track her prey here, into so dangerous a place?” the hollow presses, her four hooves stomping in the sand as she turns to face Kusajishi head on. Her lance-arm rises into line with the Lieutenant's heart.

“He tried to open a Hell portal within the Seireitei, which is illegal for several reasons. All of them obvious.”

The hollow pauses for several seconds, and the wind slowly dies down a little as she stands silently. If her face were visible she might have been blinking in disbelief. “Okay, that would do it.”

“Follow me,” she concludes, turning her expansive back to the shinigami.

“You're not going to attack?” Kusajishi asks cautiously.

The great ram-headed centaur shakes her head. “No. If you're not here simply to kill hollows then we have no reason to fight, and if we have no reason to fight then I have no reason not to extend what hospitality I can.”

“Who are you?”

“I am Neliel,” the hollow declares after a moment's thought. “And you would be?”

“Lieutenant Kusajishi Riku,” Riku replies. “I'm curious, what hospitality can an adjuchas offer?”

“You know a little about our life cycle?” Neliel muses quietly. “Peculiar. We don't have much, but you can feel free to rest with us in our shelter. At least until this windstorm passes.”

“It doesn't seem bad now.”

“It won't stay this way. It never does.”

"Very well. Lead on then, Neliel."

>Many decades later

Blood drips from the sky, and Kusajishi's blade remains lodged firmly in Halibel's side. The Espada gasps for air, her grimace of determination giving way to wide-eyed shock as her right lung fills with blood, causing her to cough violently.

“Damn it all,” she hisses. “Is this really... as far as I go?”

“You should stop,” Kusajishi suggests, her resonant voice betraying a hint of concern for her opponent despite her fierce appearance. “You have lost this fight, no need to sacrifice your life as well.”

“Lord Aizen has no use for those who lose their battles,” Halibel replies, straining even to speak. “My life is already... forfeit.”

“You moron!” Kusajishi yells, smacking the arrancar across her face. “Don't say shit like that... don't you have people to live for?”

“You... your subordinates spared their lives?” Halibel asks, eyes widening once more as she realizes the fact. “Despite the ferocity of their fights?”

“Of course,” Kusajishi insists, her own expression almost distraught with disbelief. Over the course of their fight Halibel had proven that she cares deeply for those other three, and cutting someone so genuinely decent down struck her as fundamentally wrong. “There's no point killing them. To have instilled such loyalty in them, such love... you must have really earned that.”

“Like you earned the loyalty of that centaur woman?” Halibel muses with a pained wince. “I suppose. How did you meet her anyway?”

“Pure chance, while I was tracking down a fugitive who fled to Hueco Mundo,” the Captain admits. “We became friends afterwards, over several decades. I helped her and her cohort become arrancar.”

“I see... random chance...” Halibel sighs, blood now trickling from the corners of her mouth and her eyes rapidly losing their focus. “I wonder... had things been different... could we... have been...”

Before she completes the thought, the mighty Espada falls away from her victorious foe. Captain Kusajishi catches her before she hits the ground, ensuring a softer landing despite her own array of lacerations and bruises from their fight.

“I suppose,” Kusajishi admits, answering the unconscious arrancar's unfinished question before glaring up at Aizen himself as he watches on in amusement. “Anything is possible.”

>”Excuse me, ma'am... why am I here?”
>”You want me to talk about what?”
>”That was a long time ago... let me think for a moment. It was 1943, some island hellhole or other. They all tend to get samey after a while, but the battle itself was fierce. Some of the worst fighting I've ever seen, and the hollows it attracted were wily. One of them saw a tactic employed by the defending Imperial Army, and began launching ceros at us from the top of a palm tree. The blasts certainly weren't at the level of a gillian or anything, but to us rank and file shinigami they were still dangerous.”
>”The first blast missed, striking behind our position. We almost dismissed it as a mortar blast, though we caught the second one as it was in flight... we just couldn't figure out its origin point. So I volunteered to do something stupid.”
>”Yeah, that's when I broke cover.”
>”It was a hard run, but the hollow took its shot at me. Nearly took my arm off at the shoulder, but it also revealed its position... our three riflemen took care of it, my squad medic stopped the bleeding, and we continued our mission.”
>”Three days, we were on that island. Tara-wah, I think it was called. We used that tactic a few times... the hollows never really wised up. Instead the humans leveled any vegetation and lit half the island on fire with artillery, and the hollows eventually moved on.”

>”Ah, fashion trends? I can spare a few moments to talk about that, after all I do write that column... you know, when I can convince mom that trends have changed enough to justify it. A few trends have made it over here... ikebana has always been popular enough that we had our own 'flower children' of sorts, especially in '67. Less with the psychedelics thing... as it turns out most of the mushrooms that grow here in the Soul Society won't get you high. But flowery motifs in those sorts of colors still have some popularity. We've also got a lot of Sweedish and modern minimalist design, in terms of our stuff. It fits small spaces well, and even the private homes that have been renovated in the last fifty years or so are still pretty starved for space. Minimalism also plays well with the samurai-mentality a lot of shinigami still have, or at least that's my thinking on the matter.”

>”A lot of drinkware, fine teas, and alcohol. He wasn't big on what he'd call “time wasting gadgets”, but he had his own passions. Sorry for your loss

>”Honestly... I fear I may have forgotten a few. Some may not have gone off...”

- OMAKE: Rage -
“So that girl over there is number three...” Shunsui muses, half to himself. “That guy with the kid seems pretty strong, so I'm hoping that means you're number two.”

“Sorry,” his opponent apologizes, shutting her eyes and slowly unfastening her white jacket. Removing it leaves her with the white hakama the rest of her cohort favor, with a black tanktop shirt that reveals a number tattooed on her shoulder.

“Rosa Rosette... Primera Espada,” she announces as she finally draws her unremarkable katana and opening her eyes to stare Shunsui down. “Unglücklich, Captain.”

“Odd, I don't see a mask fragment on you,” Shunsui observes. “You hardly seem like the other arrancar I've seen today in that regard.”

“The mask is a form of self-protection for most hollows,” Rosa explains, deftly striking against Shunsui's guard with a flurry of attacks. “I accepted my nature from the start, so I had no need for such protection.”

“You accepted being a hollow?” Shunsui asks incredulously as he sidesteps a powerful swipe of the Espada's blade. “Beautiful women are always dangerous, but that just put you in a whole different league.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere,” Rosa frowns, slicing the hat right off Shunsui's head. Much to his surprise, the headwear immolates before it touches the ground.

“That's dangerous!” he exclaims. “Though it doesn't look like your sword is on fire... that would be too simple, wouldn't it? I suppose I need to start taking this more seriously.”

“Do you always talk this much in battle?” Rosa asks as Shunsui backpedals.

“My swords are rather temperamental,” the Captain admits. “They only really work when she wants to play, and even then only by her rules. Though, it certainly seems like you're not going all out either.”

“In my experience the first one to show their full power loses in the end,” Rosa frowns, shifting her grip on her weapon. She clearly considers the situation, before Shunsui just has to open his mouth.

“Sometimes a surprise attack works too though.”

Rosa nods, as if that little thought was enough to make up her mind on the subject. “Fair point.”

Shunsui blinks. “Hey, wait!”

“Crucify... Espina Ardiente.”
>1/?
>>
>>1163589
When the smoke clears, Rosa's outfit has changed. Instead of hakama and a shirt she wears a close-fitting white coat with two rows of buttons, made from a smooth fabric that hangs down almost to her knees, with white trousers neatly bloused into knee boots. Her weapon is a long blade with two over-under barrels running along one side, ending in a top-break action and a glistening hardwood stock, clearly meant to be used more as a bayonet than a sword, and she wears around her waist a belt with dozens of silvery tubes which must be ammunition.

The most pronounced difference however are her eyes: black, with a predatory glint.

“Die,” her voice echoes, and she pulls the trigger.

Shunsui is hard-pressed to avoid the resulting blast, not a single shot but a hail of tiny bright streaks which pepper the skyscraper behind him and blossom into azure flames. The building immolates in seconds, even to the point of incinerating its steel beams. What little remains collapses in on itself in a sad pile of mangled construction, and by the time Shunsui completes his shunpō Rosa has already fired again...

… only to find her assault absorbed by a newcomer, who unleashes the same torrential stream of reiatsu back at its creator. Rosa's eyes go wide, and she barely has time to reach for her belt before disappearing behind a fiery explosion.

“Are you okay?” Ukitake asks, turning to face his old friend. “That attack of hers is...”

“Jūshirō!” Shunsui shouts in alarm as a blade protrudes from the other Captain's gut, spraying blood which ignites itself midair.

That was rude,” Rosa growls as the wound she inflicted sizzles and ignites, before she pushes down on her rifle to fling Ukitake to the ground below and open the action in the same movement. “I wasn't done playing with that yet.

Shunsui flash-steps after his friend, rushing to protect him from another storm of pinpoint attacks. “Doesn't the Soul Society teach its Captains manners!?”

“Stay there for a while,” she spits, firing another blast just to make sure that the two Captains won't be getting up to bother her again any time soon.

She then covers her ears as an ear-piercing scream fills the battlefield. “Damn that brat...”

The fiery flames entrapping Aizen and his posse fade away, revealing the three former Captains who survey their Espada's progress. Halibel is still sort of locked against that ice brat... or rather she was, until Wonderweiss jams his fist through the Captain's stomach. As for Starrk, he's already finished his fight against the big doggy and is dealing with the tiny assassin bitch.

“I see we've made good progress, my dear Espadas,” Aizen muses in a voice that carries well on the wind. “Though it appears we've been joined by some uninvited guests. It wouldn't do to leave them unattended.”

“God, what a prick,” Rosa sighs as two men approach her with shunpō.

“Lady, you don't know the half of it.”
>2/?
>>
>>1163684
“Who the hell are you supposed to be and why should I care?” Rosa demands, swiftly reloading her weapon with two fresh charges from her belt.

“Now, don't be that way,” the man with the goofy star-shaped afro chides the Espada. “We're here to settle a beef with Aizen, you see.”

“You used one of those rounds from your belt to erect a barrier, didn't you?” the blonde one asks cannily. “Of course it was Captain Ukitake's mistake not to expect someone as powerful as you to have a counter for their own level of attack, but I've never heard of a hollow using a defensive technique like that. How did you do it I wonder?”

“I don't have to answer that,” Rosa grumbles.

“Fine, fine.”

“I don't suppose I could convince you to stand down?” Love asks, preparing to don his mask. No doubt he intends to sort out exactly how strong his new enemy is through a brief exchange, and intends to use hollowfication to make that as safe for himself as possible. But Rosa puts an immediate stop to that line of thought.

She stares not at the two facing her, but at the pair of newcomers facing Halibel: one with ridiculous green hair, the other steel-grey and cut like a modern military man. “I know that face...”

“Halibel!” Rosa shouts.

The Tres Espada turns away from her own fight to see what her superior wants. “What is it?”

“I want to switch!”

Love frowns at Rosa, his hand still poised to use hollowfication. “What do you mean, switch? Are you trying to say we're not interesting enough for you?”

“Not at all,” Rosa sighs, turning back to glare at the two vizards accusingly. “You say you're here with a score to settle against Aizen? Here's a deal: survive against Halibel over there and I'll let you and your friends take their shot with Aizen. I'll even make sure Gin and Tōsen stay off your backs while you do it.”

“And what do we have to do in exchange?” Rose asks warily. “Surely such goodwill doesn't come out of nowhere? We have something you want.”

Rosa nods sternly. “I want a fair fight with Muguruma Kensei.”

“With Kensei?” Love repeats.

“That sound fair to you?” Rosa shouts, going over the other vizards' heads and appealing directly to her nemesis.

“Rose, Love!” the other vizard shouts. “Do it!”

“If you're sure!”

In a brief series of flash steps the four combatants trade places. Rose and Love now stare down Halibel, who is already in her released form, while Kensei and his one-time Lieutenant Mashiro face Rosa. For a few moments, even as other duels have already begun, Rosa stares straight back.

“Send the girl someplace else,” she finally grumbles.

“You're crazy if you think I'm gonna run away like some scared kid!” Mashiro shouts back. “Isn't that right, Kensei?”

“Actually, I'd prefer...”

But Muguruma's words fall on deaf ears, as Mashiro's already donned her mask. “Kyaaah!”

Rosa merely lifts an arm to block the cero-charged kick, though her eyes narrow as the power behind it proves more than anticipated. The stock of her gun slams down against Mashiro's face, shattering her mask and slamming her into the roof of a nearby shopping arcade.

“Mashiro!”

“Don't move,” Rosa insists as Kensei turns to go after Mashiro, but stops in place. “She won't die from that, so don't think you have to answer for the fact that she got hurt. You have plenty to answer for to me.”

“Moron,” he frowns, glancing away from his badly-beaten Lieutenant. “The hell do I have to answer for to the likes of you?”

“I am Rosa Rosette, the Primera Espada,” Rosa introduces herself in a cold, bitter tone. “During the last engagements between the shinigami and quincy, you hunted down and murdered my parents. I watched you end their lives. I would remember your face anywhere.”

That, Muguruma Kensei of the Ninth Division, is what you have to answer for.”

“If that's true,” Kensei insists with a glare, “then they were a threat to the stability of the entire world.”

“Are you saying they deserved it?” Rosa hisses, her face contorted with rage as her nails dig into her palm deep enough to draw blood. “For trying to create a world for themselves where they could raise their child in safety?”

“You don't regret it, do you? That means I can kill you with a clear conscience.”

Kensei draws his zanpakuto. “You can try.”

“So who's the real moron?” Rosa smirks downward as Kensei pants, his breath as ragged as his body after Rosa's unusual ability burned away both his Bankai and his own reiatsu were ignited and burned away. “Don't tell me you seriously thought my ability was to light things on fire? It's nothing so innocuous.”

Rosa lowers herself through the air, landing lightly on her toes near where Kensei has fallen... only to find an inky black blade thrust through her stomach. Her eyes go wide as Shunsui materializes out of her shadow, withdrawing Katen Kyōkotsu in a stream of blood. The Espada staggers a half step forward, then slowly falls towards the pavement.

Kensei breaths a sigh of relief before he finds a blade jammed through his own body.

“Just kidding,” Rosa snarls before pulling the trigger of her rifle. The round goes off inside Kensei's chest cavity, incinerating him from inside and blasting what remains of his body in two. He's dead long before his head, arms, and shoulders hit the ground several yards away.

She turns in time to see Shunsui wince, and to hear Love shout her victim's name.

Stop!” Rosa roars, and Halibel checks the swing of her massive blade just in time to avoid blindsiding Love in his momentary loss of focus. Blood drips from the hole in her stomach.

“I've avenged my parents,” the Primera declares, hand pressed against her wound. “Now it's time I upheld my end of the bargain.”

Still lightning-quick despite her injury, she reappears immediately behind Tōsen with the blade of her weapon pressed against his neck. Starrk presses one of his pistols against Gin's chin, while Halibel stands nearby ready to turn her massive blade against either of the two former Captains if they try to interfere.

“A rebellion?” Aizen muses.

Rosa shakes her head. “Don't be so dramatic. I don't intend to kill your bitchboy Tōsen here, only to cut his jugular and incinerate a little of his blood. The change in blood pressure will knock him out without killing him.”

“And what purpose would that serve?”

“I made a bargain, she repeats. “I got a fair shot at my revenge, and I took it. Now I'm giving them theirs.”

“A pity,” Aizen shakes his head. “I always liked you the best, Rosa Rosette. But since it seems our alliance has run its course allow me to ask you one final question, just to satisfy my own curiosity.”

“Go ahead.”

“... how long are you going to keep staring over there?”

Starrk
Halibel
Ulquiorra
Alt-Yammy
Grimmjow
Zommari
Luppi
Aaroniero
Szayelapporo

Riku has her moments, but Rosa would've gone full-tyrant from day one and never let up. King Spoopy would've gotten the axe for gross insubordination and maintaining his own private force of arrancar, and Spoony would've been killed for attacking Neliel. Szayelapporo would have been promoted to an Espada anyway under Aizen's orders, but Rosa would've kept him at bitch level as an insult and a reminder of what he did.

Legitimately astonished Spoony lasted that long. The incident where he crippled Neliel was far from the first time where he attacked her, and he outright killed at least one Arrancar without orders. Rosa isn't the nicest sort, but murdering a comrade is something she absolutely wouldn't let slide.
>>
>>1163963
It's also a matter of not fucking with anyone else's subordinates.
>>
>>1164004
True. I just mean that even if Rosa didn't have Spoony killed for his tendency to assault Neliel, his murdering everyone on recruitment missions, and his murder of that poor random arrancar in chapter 313, she certainly would have spanked him hard enough to make Szayelapporo reconsider helping him at least. I don't really see how that incident happens if the Primera actually gives a shit. Stark was sleeping and Aizen seems to like to see his subordinates suffer even when it would be smarter to help them out.
>>
>>1164031
Again, it comes down to the ethos of not wanting to harm other people's subordinates, particularly when they're as defensive of them as Neliel was. She'd have gone to bat for Spoony on several occasions, meaning Rosa would hesitate to intervene right up until Neliel was out of the picture.

Then it's heads-on-pikes time.

For fucks sake Aizen. Again with the illusion gimmick.

Question: If Riku was recruited by Aizen and turned into evil!Riku, would she fuck Aizen over?
>>
>>1164219
Of course she would, it's damn near instinctive.
>>
>>1164173
I don't know if you noticed, but the entire CONCEPT of Zanpakuto is literally just a gimmick.

In fact I believe an accurate description of Bleach as a whole would be: "Neat Sword Gimmicks: The Anime".

Probably never let Oetsu hear that though.
>>
>>1164285
how badly would evil!Riku fuck Aizen over? I would kill to see an omake of Aizen getting bent over and anally screwed by any version of Riku.

Imagine an Aizen that actually gives a shit about somebofy besides himseft and whose plans usually don't treat his subordinates as disposable?

So basically Riku, except more aggressively anti-establishment instead of merely independent. Because if you give Aizen empathy, loyalty, and the other real-people feelings the only thing left that differentiates him and Riku is their stance on the legal authority of the Central 46.

That and tits.

I find it quite disturbing that SSQ!Riku and evil!Riku are almost exactly the same, and SSQ!Riku is just a hairpin's decision from turning into evil!Riku the moment the C-46, Royal Guards, or even fellow captains decide to do something stupid to tick her off with only “Mutual good will and shared goals are the only reasons Captain Kusajishi hasn't left with half our military power, wrecked the place on her way out, and stuck us with all her outstanding bar tabs.” quoted Shunsui.

Hence why so many people want to kill her.

And I really think she would care more about Ichigo training if he was born a girl.

Although Ichigo (female) would be a completely different person. For one, she wouldn't have much problem about hair dye so no bulling for a stupid reason. She would still be quite stubborn, Orihime would be her best friend instead of Chad, Chad would like her because she probably talked in his favor at least once...

She and her sisters would have a closer relationship even if she would still try to take charge.

What if crossover, replace Ichigo from Bleach with Ichigo from Tokyo Mew Mew and see what happens

>That and tits.

Great STONKING tits.

I though Riku had a pretty modest bust?

>>1168992
I dunno, Yoruichi at least thinks they're pretty great

Honestly, I don't feel like Ichiko wouldn't be that much different in either canon or SSQ.

Both can be true.

The only question is whether she has massive mammaries or mammaries beyond comprehension.

But always remember

I saw this since I had to backtrack and reread how I wrote the Oin scene.

To clarify, there is no "mastering the Two Step" because by definition adding the two movement techniques together means Riku is moving faster than her own ability to track changes in her position and surroundings. It's literally uncontrollable, and very much a technique of last resort.

And we really need to add that third step.
