Consequently, you're drifting off a little as you watch the Cassim's Folly firing one of its CIWS batteries over and over again into a hole excavated on a nearby hill, where geological surveys indicate is the most likely spot for the center mass of the bio-armor. It's a brisk, breezy day on top of the Great Zann Dam where you're enjoying a brief repast with the other officers present, and you have the pleasure of watching power-armored kill teams with flamethrowers troop in and out of the dam. Over ninety percent of the bio-armor infiltrating the dam is dead, including the fruiting body that was producing the drones, the rest is underwater, the stump of the main tentacle mass that your forces have been taking turns shredding. The fact that this only represents one limb of the bloated, decayed thing does not comfort you at all.

“So, let me get this straight. You tried to unlawfully halt and possibly conscript someone on suspicion of being a space pirate.” Captain Asphodel, despite his recent promotion, is showing no mercy in grilling Lieutenant Rabban over some incident in Innsmouth.

“He was! I swear it to you, and he was allied with Avalon!” Lieutenant Rabban protests, “Why won't you believe me!?”

Asphodel's scowl deepens, “Because nothing about your story makes sense. You identified him as a member of a fleet active in the Belt, in the Solar System, light years away from here. A pirate fleet that is allied with Jupiter.” He's been in an awful mood ever since finding out that Ensign Keith 'Jesus' Young is here. Although he started laughing in a rather unhinged manner when he saw Young's Warmouth, and had to excuse himself from a briefing for a while to calm down.

“Quite right. I'm sure your uncle has told you the same. You do follow the news briefings, don't you? They're quite informative sometimes, although I personally find them a bit lacking on cultural affairs. If the Iron Kestrels were operating on Qu'lir, surely we would have bigger problems.” Captain Clearwater arrives with a tray of sandwiches and a pair of large thermoses, “Coffee or tea, Lieutenant Wedge?”

“But...but...” Lieutenant Rabban wails, “He was with an Avalonian! I distinctly heard a ye!”

“You can't arrest someone for saying ye.” You point out. “Their boss has too much to lose. If he's on Avalon's side, why bother keeping one of their Paladins?” You know they're there, but you strongly doubt an alliance with Avalon. You can't imagine Irina's sister would let her be put in danger like that...or at least, so you hope.

“Because he's Roarke Starwind and she has tits.” Asphodel growls, “But you're right, if he could be hired to come here and mess with us, we'd know it by now. So let me give you an alternate theory. Lady Fatima Ahmad is captured by the Iron Kestrels and her bodyguards are defeated. Starwind keeps their mecha, and possibly takes in a few of their members, but a few leave either by escape or because he just doesn't care about people he can't ransom. Shamed and not wanting to return to Mars with a sullied reputation, one of these goes to Qu'lir in hope of finding a new life, possibly a career with the local militias or as a mercenary, and above all else staying away from the Black Ogre. This lasts until you assault him, try to push your religion on him, and threaten him with arrest, at which point he knocks one of your officers unconscious and his girlfriend shoots you with the tranq gun she carries for self-defense. The so-called Avalonian was probably just a local resident whose accent you mistook, why would one of them come to Innsmouth when it's under our control? If they're a spy, they're damned bad at it for getting involved.”

“At any rate, we've had quite enough of these strongarm tactics. No more forced conversions, my lad. Colonel Luxol has had a very serious talk with your uncle, and believe me, if you don't cooperate we can and will find members of the Holy Militia who will.” Captain Clearwater's voice is quite stern, “The boy did the right thing standing up to you. This is not a war of conversion, we are here to prevent the evils of the past from resurfacing and to put an end to the Green Men.”

You nod firmly, “If it doesn't stop, we're stopping it. That's how it is. Correct me if I'm wrong, Captains, but the ranking officers on this planet are all Jovian, right?”

“Quite right.” Captain Clearwater agrees, and Captain Asphodel nods. They've been treating you like you have the same rank ever since the raid, as a mark of respect. SOUL might normally be able to pull rank even on higher-ranking officers from the regular forces, but you've tried not to use that whenever possible, which makes it a bit eerie when they treat you like a senior officer.

Captain Asphodel's face reddens, and he opens his mouth to deliver a fierce tongue-lashing, but Captain Clearwater puts a hand on his shoulder and shakes his head, “Young Asim is going to have to learn on his own. Either he will apologize, or I'm sure Lieutenant Wedge would be happy to accept his offer of a duel.”

You adjust the Paladin's monosword at your side nonchalantly, and Lieutenant Rabban blanches, “I beg your pardon, I am simply a bit...shocked. If Dejah Thoris was indeed here, she would surely have been assigned command of Martian forces and given rank in the Holy Militia. We would have known, there is no way we would not have known the legendary masked ace of the desert.”

You resolve to practice hard with your swordplay before someone starts assuming you're really an expert. You've had great luck so far, and you have a good weapon, but that only gets you so far.

The only character trait I care about is Mai being an autist lord for models, large planes and mobile armor. All her friends dying was just a convenient device to get her to join the Kestrels and give her her inspiration's scar. It wrapped everything up in one quick, easy event. “Lieutenant, sir!” Ensign Young salutes you, then nods nonchalantly to the Captains, “Gentlemen.”

He doesn't even seem to notice Rabban. Rabban bristles, but it's a subdued sort of bristling after the browbeating he's received.

Captain Asphodel grits his teeth, Captain Clearwater just smiles.

“At ease, Ensign.” Captain Asphodel grunts.

“I already am. Oh, sandwiches!” Jesus' eyes light up, “I was getting hungry, thank you Lieutenant.” He grabs one before Captain Asphodel can whisk the plate aside. The biggest one.

Rabban is apparently more perceptive than Jesus. He flinches at the look in Asphodel's eye. It's a look even you've never seen back when he thought you were screwing over the regular forces. It's a look that promises murder.

Jesus just munches happily on his food, swallowing before giving you a friendly grin, “We've received a communication from the SOUL squad sent to harass the Avalonian advance.” He glances back at the Captains, “Lieutenant, sir, are you sure I'm allowed to discuss SOUL business in front of the regs? Are they cleared for all of this?”

A vein starts to pulse in Asphodel's forehead.

“Yes, of course.” You try to head things off now before they get bad.

“Are you sure, sir? I mean, can they be trusted if they couldn't get into SOUL?” Jesus expresses doubt.

“Absolutely.” You kick Asphodel underneath the picnic table you're using when you see him reaching for his sidearm. No blue-on-blue today.

“But General Fairchild said...” Jesus cheerfully digs his grave deeper.

“Colonel Luxol.” You cut him off, “Has instructed me specifically that we are to follow the guidance of the senior officers among the regular forces.” He's said no such thing but you don't think it actually needed to be said.

“Well, General Fairchild outranks him.” Jesus sniffs dismissively, “But alright, this one time. I mean, I'd be more comfortable if they went somewhere else, and I did save your life...” He trails off.

You slam your fist down on the table, “ENSIGN YOUNG, YOUR REPORT! NOW!” You roar at him, before Asphodel can shoot him.

He winces, “Alright, alright! Yes sir! The squad...” He frowns, “Colonel Luxol didn't say anything about using their silly nickname, did he?”

“Fine, the THREE BLACK STARS, a nickname that I will formally state is not remotely in keeping with the ideals and image of SOUL...although I can't write a formal complaint for, uh, girlfriend-related reasons...have engaged the enemy at the town of Dunwich.” Jesus continues.

You hear Asphodel's teeth grind at the implied nepotism.

Its cloaking systems are inferior to the original, according to the files. Lara's version uses an upgraded double-ended saber...a weapon I will think is stupid no matter how popular it gets...Lyanna's version uses the Gaunt Rifle first customized for your old mech, although hopefully without the, er, artwork. As for Lyra, apparently hers has an improved rocket launcher based on another SOUL design. Compared to the prototype, their weapons are more advanced, but an improved sensor suite like those second-generation SOUL mecha all possesses can track them if they move. They also show up on radar if they're flying too high to use cover. They're small for SOUL, Warmouth-sized, and use a unique frame originally built for...” He frowns as he reads through the file on his PC, “...a certain idol.”

“What was the original like?” You ask, out of curiosity.

Asphodel flicks the holoscreen to the next image, and it pops up. It looks a bit more...old-fashioned. Small, black forearm shields edged in white, dark blue paint with white trim that somehow, with its plated skirt, reminds you incongruously of a maid's uniform, and a pair of pilebunkers. Its basic design isn't intimidating at all, pilebunkers aside. However, every surface has been shaped at great expense to baffle radar, its thrusters are minimalistic and petite and according to the text that scrolls by when you tap parts of the hologram it doesn't make much sound or even produce light when in flight. It may only be a prototype, but the main system, its true weapon, is terrifying.

“It's cute.” You remark. It's definitely one of the old generation one SOUL mecha, a bit outdated now, but still head and shoulders above most mecha in production and certainly all line mecha.

“You think so? I like it, although it's a bit of a waste setting it up for melee, I'd have given it a cannon. Or better yet, missiles, so that it's harder to trace its location.” Asphodel rubs his chin.

Captain Clearwater huffs, “You don't appreciate the refined elegance of melee. Real melee, none of this beam-weapon nonsense. The clash of metal on metal! The strength of pilot and mech pushed to its limit! Ah, for the good old days when a Bluegill with a mace could make every Harpy pilot in the belt cry with fear...” He sighs nostalgically.

“Melee weapons are a relic, they come into fashion again every so often when technology advances far enough, but range always wins out in the end. It's alright being behind the times, though, I'm sure you'll be long retired by the point when every machine fielded by SOUL has a firearm and doesn't expend weight on close-combat options.” Jesus smiles like a saint, “Anyway, the SOUL team is requesting either backup or retrieval. Lara's mech is damaged, but too valuable to leave behind.”

The next time we met, I...I...well...my mech suffered some damage, but he wasn't involved.” He looks nervous as he tries to work out how to spin his story. Too nervous to realize why Captain Asphodel is grinning.

Captain Clearwater indignantly grabs Jesus by the back of his belt and the scruff of his uniform, hauls him over to the edge of the dam, and throws him bodily into the lake, dusting off his gloves as the Ensign splashes into the water, “Appalling boy.” He sniffs, “A relic indeed." He shakes his fist angrily down at the Ensign.

You check just long enough to make sure that Jesus is treading water, tuning out his shrill cries of outrage. You hear him screaming about a court martial, but you're certainly not going to facilitate that. Besides, you have a bigger decision to make. If Lara's mech is damaged, she might not be able to cloak. An escort would be the right thing to send.

Paranoia is fine, but it's important to assess the situation. There was one Chevalier we have not seen. A wasp like one who is melee based. If that thing is the stealth one, Jesus would fail. We would lose a sniper and 3 stealth machines plus any intel they have. Meanwhile, if the Gerin pushes, it must face a sniper, a melee specialist and a armored president son along with an entire army on it's own. It could very well make it, but as we have proven, a lot of dice means a lot of chances of getting hits in and landing that one blow. Disabling their stealth while enabling ours means we can take out their key targets or even aim for their ship. I understand the risks, but at the same time I do not think the Gerin would solo it.

You must be the guy I copied my sensors from. They should have 2 K of structure and thus 1 Ton of weight (since Wong uses the ones from the Corebook) and have 7 km range, not 700. If you can deactivate it, there is a weapon our technicians have been working on. My uncle, the Captain of our vessel, has labeled it the 'Sunfire bomb', but I prefer the common soldier's nickname for it.”

“What's that?” You inquire.

He smiles. It's not a nice smile, “They call it 'the war crime in a box.' I hope to see it used. Inshallah we will repay the suffering of Qu'lir's people and the losses of our own brave mujahideen to the devil-witch Carnegie a thousandfold, and burn the Gerin with the wrath of Allah himself.”

You exhale heavily, "Whew. Let Irina take a look at it while I'm gone, so long as it's used safely...any weapon is a good one."

Lieutenant Rabban frowns, "Hopefully it will kill off the beast in the pit, as well. It has somehow formed a shield of dense fungal matter, harder than any armor, around itself, and it grows back as quickly as we can burn through it. You are, briefly, Roarke Susan Starwind, Admiral of the Iron Kestrels, and as you hoist high the head of the mech of one of the Captain of one of the few remaining pirate bands that opposed you, your soldiers let out a resounding cheer. The Knuckle Kaiser drops the huge lump of metal to the mechbay floor with an even louder crash, and with a grin, you prepare to disembark.

The number of independent pirate crews and fleets is shrinking by the day, and already, you've had some strange results. A number of small-time independent companies have contacted you, with various amounts of clandestine behavior, wanting the publicity of their technology showing up in your army, and to most of them you've given approval. The Iron Kestrels are being reforged into steel, and they need an edge that can cut through UJCIDF forces and Avalon alike. As for pirates, many have joined you, but some have coagulated into other groups. Seven Nation Army, an alliance of seven small pirate crews, was only a budding threat, but you put it down hard. Only one of their Captains was good enough to present a serious threat, and it's his Morgan II you decapitated with the Knuckle Kaiser after shredding the mecha of the others. Even though their ships are small, it's hard giving them up, and the only reason you agreed to let Rosita have them is because she's using their remains to construct the arena. Some of them were more like gangs of thieves, with only a transport ship to their name, anyway. Quantity over quality seems to have been their motto. The leaders of Seven Nation Army are in your brig now, although they're diehard against you, as could be expected of pirates that refuse the union of the Iron Kestrels at this stage in your ascent.

The real worry, in your mind, is the so-called 'Five-Man Band', whose name you suspect the Seven were ripping off. Five notorious deep-belt brigands, and unlike the Seven, each is an experienced Captain with many battles under his or her belt. You're not familiar with all of them, their group assembled after you became Captain of the Iron Kestrels, but some of them have names you've been familiar with for your whole career. 'Pale Slayer' Meridian. 'Psychopomp' Farij, 'Hammerhead' Marx, 'The Gentleman', and worst of all, their leader...the man known simply as 'King'. Despite none of them individually having as much power as the Green Skulls during Galbadie's day, none of them was among his victims, and none of them have bowed to you either.

It only took your primary battleship, and three lesser cruisers to handle Seven Nation Army. You lured them into a trap using the Harmonium, then dropped the Cleander, Yamato, and Rhinehawk out of warp on them from behind to bury them in missiles and beam fire. You're far away from any inhabited colonies, and somehow, it feels darker out here, more ominous, your ship floating in a maze of splintery lumps of rock work down by constant impact against each other.

It doesn't help that some of your wives are on Auditorium right now, making preparations for the wedding. Damn it, there was a time when you wouldn't have immediately needed that kind of company after a mission, but nearly dying and coming back to become arguably the strongest pirate fleet in the belt you have stresses you didn't have before. Also, these girls do things to a man. Frustrating things, but wonderful things too.

“Any damage, husboss?” Karen hugs you when you land. With your other girls so busy, it's nice to have at least one to welcome you home.

You give her a kiss and a pat on her ample backside, “Not even a scratch.” It's true, now with four drones, the Knuckle Kaiser has become truly unstoppable. You're a little jealous that the Flowerhorn has advanced faster than the Knuckle Kaiser, but its drones are more simple, and probably more fragile. The real problem isn't engineering, it's the pilot. Learning how to split your focus and plan around multiple small AI-driven drones is harder than it sounds.

Well, if it's the one I made, it's a pretty simple Design. Missile: 20 kills, WA -2, Range 0, Blast 20, Fuse, AP, Incendiary 1 shot. 52.8 CP 1 ton.
You drop it, you pull the trigger, and everything in the zone gets to eat burning, sticky napalm that eats through armor. Because it's a blast, no dodge can beat it and if the shields are done.. well, a few of these would slowly burn away the gerin's armor.

You scoop her up in a bridal carry, and she squeals with laughter, legs kicking and hands grabbing at your shoulders for support as you cover her face with kisses. “Roarke! You can't bully me anymore, we're getting married!”

“OH HOW WRONG YOU ARE!” You cackle, “Marriage means I get to bully you even more!” You nibble her ear, and she shrieks happily, squirming around just so that you'll wrassle her. You pretend not to notice how intentionally she presses her chest forward to show off her breasts, she's not exactly the most subtle woman in the world, or the most eloquent.

“Unhand me, you monster!” She chides you, and you let her go, watching her float in midair. She pouts as you gather up her braids in your hand and use them as tow cables, “No, wait, I mean...rehand me! Rehand me at once!” She sighs with satisfaction as you take her back into your arms, nestling against you, “This is perfect. You and me. Together, alone.” She's at least tactful enough not to mention that Red Siren is on Auditorium and can't interfere with her schemes to seduce you.

“I don't know about alone.” You mention. There are people passing by you in the hallway, but it's easy to tell the old hands from the newcomers. The newcomers stare and grin a little, the original Iron Kestrels are all much too used to it and have probably been rooting for Karen to snag your heart for years. Which she has.

“So...have you finished with Biggs' logs yet?” Karen makes a face, “You promised I could review all of them when you're done.

You make a face too. Firstly, because the last time you looked through his logs, an assassin burst into your room, an experience that still gives you a fright even today. Not for yourself, facing down death isn't so bad, when it happens the adrenaline kicks in and the part of your mind that irrationally recoils from the void goes far, far away, but because Karen was in bed right next to you. Secondly, you dislike the man in those logs more and more. Like you, he has a surprising way with women, and an unsurprising dislike for Hermione Fairchild. You also can't imagine violating whatever taboo you suspect this Project Neverland, which Samantha is investigating, violates. You get out your PC, and bring up the files, "I have one left, it looks as if he stopped communicating as much after he got involved with those kids."

Karen kisses your cheek and opens the door to her room without leaving your arms, "Watch it, then come to bed."

Well, my assumption is that there has been a bit of a time leap and massive gap between these. The earliest ones involved Fairchild when she was young, then talks of neverland after a while. Basically, the time line is like this in my mind.
Fairchild is born>>Child Zero is born>>>Never land starts in earnest.
Child Zero could very well use Fairchild's DNA, but by being born naturally genetics would likely make things different. So no pink hair, but something else. She is a skilled pilot, but she is also a narcissist superb. Fairchild, not so much. She has some signs of it, but not to the level of Red Siren. The messing with the mother and younger sister would also explain Irina's backstory.

The gap doesn't make sense if it's Fairchild though. She was born during or maybe a bit before the war. This entire thing happened AFTER the war, when the tech was free, but considered forbidden. Red could have been born a few years after, and the recording could happen just as she made her idol debut. Remember, she did take part in a paint ball fight which could have been fairly young.

You guys seem to forget that a relatively simple (taking setting's rather high science level) genetic tweak would make modified humans like Fairy and her 'nieces' look younger longer.
That would throw all the age calcuations out of the window. Fairy being a 60 something semi-immortal witch pretending to be a hot 30 something Marshal because she looks half her age due to genetic tweaking.

Another technician runs into view, “Sir, we have to go now! There's no time, the test frame just breached Colony 2's superstructure. It's coming here!”

Gerard Biggs stands up, walks over to the closet, and opens it, “Get to the ships, gentlemen, evacuating must be our priority. The knowledge we have gathered is too valuable to lose.” You hear muffled gunfire in the distance, and Gerard Biggs smiles sadly, “Farewell, my friend. Sleep tight until I see you again.”

You turn off your PC, and stand there in silence for a moment. The gears slowly turn in your brain.

“Roarke?” Karen calls out, “Are you done?” She's waiting in bed for you. Her underwear might not be very sexy, in general, but it looks fantastic on her, “I'll watch it later, come here and warm me up.” Her smile lights up her whole face, the edges of her eyes crinkling with honest happiness to have you back after yet another battle.

“Ah, don't bother with it. The last one had nothing technical, it's just a bunch of drama.” You tell her, and apparently you sound convincing, because she holds her arms out to you insistently, waiting for you to come join her.

“Didn't you tell Samantha you wanted to look into this...Project Neverland thing? It could be useful drama, we should go through it and analyze it too.” She puffs her cheeks out, wiggling her fingers at you until you come over and sit beside her, running a hand through her hair and letting it out of its braids.”

“I'm sure she could get something from it.” You say, very neutrally, “Actually, maybe Duncan as well, if he can spare the time from working with your grandpa. Project Skywalker was a Terran-backed project, right? He might know something.”

“That's great!” She says enthusiastically, “Oh, maybe some of Red Siren's people too. I know, it's a pretty shocking suggestion, right? Still, we're going to be sisters, and the Kestrels need all the hands we can get. I can at least try to work with her, not against her.”

Any other time, you'd be so proud of her, “Not them. Let's keep this close to us, for now.” You kiss her to hush her up. Even what you just heard can't dim your enthusiasm for what comes next.

Game resumes at the usual time. No brakes on the Final Qu'lir Arc train (except there probably will be a break a few days in so I don't die)
