Laki looks uneasy. “Do you think the elders are going to go for that?”

Keira smiles, but there’s a small fraction of doubt in her eyes. “Of course! Herb has a good spirit, and the elders are always right. So they’ll see it too and Herb can get recognized as a maema!” She claps her hands, almost psyching herself up. “This is actually a good event. Maybe even a sign. I’m happy for you, Herb!”

Laki sighs. “Look. Maybe we should just melt it. Or have your pokemon walk over the snow here and forget about it. Your pokemon-”

“Pokemon walking naturally on the snow is fine, but I can’t order it.” Keira says. “Why don’t you think the elders will see Herb as worthy after a test? You think he’s got a good spirit, don’t you?”

“It’s fine.” You tell them both. “I’ll take whatever test they want.”

Keira and Laki look to you. Keira clasps her hands, but Laki seems less thrilled. “Great! Let’s go, then!” She walks ahead. Looks like she has a lot of energy now.

You stay walking beside Laki. “Do you think I can do it?” Your voice isn’t defending your pride. It’s asking for an honest opinion. What if you signed up for something you can’t do? What’d mom say, don’t write cheques you can’t cash? Something like that.

“It’s not the test I’m worried about, although yeah, that too. It’s the punishment if they think see you as an outsider that despoiled water.”

They really take the snow on this mountain seriously.

“What about you?” You watch her reach into her shirt and pull out a bit of snow that got stuck inside.

Laki puts it in her mouth. “Keira might be right. I’m a maema. Happened before I left for the games. Not sure how much they like me now, though.”

“But what is a maema?”

“Hmm? You don’t know anything about this place, huh? Maema is someone who isn’t unclean. It’s...how can I put it in terms you might get? Okay, you know how mainlander jobs sometimes need a background check? It’s like that, except for your spirit. It doesn’t mean you’re holy or anything, just that you’re uhh, checked out for any...” she snaps her fingers, trying to think of the right words, “ill intent.” She squeezes your shoulder. “Just try to relax. Your best bet is to get into a good state of mind and you’ll be fine.”

Huh. That sounds like it leaves a lot up to interpretation.

She gives you a look of pity. “Well, my dad did it once.”

“Yeah. Once.”

You gulp.

“No! I didn’t mean that. It was years before I was born. He and some friends washed themselves in the reservoir after helping build part of the temple. Because he was a leader in the construction crew, he got a lashing. Has a cool scar now.”

Oh. You hum as you walk along the path.

Your group arrives outside of an elaborate temple complex. Amazing woodwork lines an elaborate series of columns and walkways towards a wooden temple on the side of a cliff. Melted water flows into a waterfall below.

Young girls dressed and painted like Keira whisper and giggle quietly as they watch you go by. You try not to blush.

An exceedingly tall, very flamboyantly dressed man comes out to greet your group. He also has a painted face.

“Keira.” The priest bows to her. She returns it just as deeply. “Life is temporary.”

“Spirit is forever.” She answers back, then breaks out into a smile. “High Priest Makai! You look well.”

He smiles, then looks to you. There’s something incredibly piercing about his eyes. “Hello, John.” He reaches out a hand.

Gobble follows your lead and bows. Dice sees what Gobble is doing and bows, too, but he doesn’t seem to have any idea why. He falls forward. Gobble gives him a look of absolute understanding. The younger priestesses are trying their hardest not to giggle loudly.

He raises an eyebrow. It looks especially prominent thanks to the makeup.

He appraises you for a moment and hands the cloth away. The person that takes it isn’t another young servant. It looks like someone dressed similarly, except without face paint. He looks covered in leafs and plants. He reaches out and shakes your hand using the towel to keep skin from touching.

“What a kind and diplomatic young man you are. You remind me of the young boy in the tale of the Yangoose and the Ekans.” He directs that comment towards his colleague. Whatever it means, it has some sort of hidden meaning.

The tall, mean priest looks upset, but says nothing.

You bow to the new priest, too, just to be safe.

“High Priest Koa!” Keira says.

“We plant seeds today.” He bows.

“So that life grows tomorrow.” She finishes.

The three of them talk and catch up with some pleasantries for awhile. Laki, who has just been bowing but hasn’t said anything, is looking much more at ease.

After a while, Keira finally says something. “I have something to confess.”

She explains about the snow. The two priests listen. The Ghost one makes a comment about her bringing you so close to the snow in the first place. The Grass one looks intrigued at Belladonna and watches her while Keira goes over what happened.

“They didn’t do it on purpose.” Keira defends you and Laki.

“Oh? Someone pushed them into it?” Makai, the Ghost High Priest, says while waiting for you to respond. “Why did you desecrate the snow?”

Bella looks up at you with such a beaming expression. That makes it all worthwhile.

“I can see why.” Koa, the Grass Preist says. “She’s quite the little specimen, isn’t she?” He pets her then scratches under her chin. She loves it.

Keira bounces on the balls of her feet. “And so I was thinking-”

“You want him to try to prove he’s a Maema.” The Ghost Priest says. “Yes. I see now. Very well, if young John here wishes to adopt to our ways, I encourage it. And should he fail, he should be punished for water desecration accordingly.”

“Now now. I’m sure none of this is necessary. Accidents happen. It was for a good reason, after all.”

“The shrine behind us is not just to look pretty.” Makai argues. “Traditions are important.”

The Grass Priest's face turns to a smarmy smile. “A very convenient phrase for a High Priest who only has beautiful priestesses below him in his caste.” He jokes.

“I’ll have you kn-” He stops short, fixes his robe, and walks off. “I shall prepare the tea myself.”

Koa turns to Laki. “And when was the last time you had a vision quest? You seem in need of one.”

“Is that an order, High Priest??” Laki asks. Her tone isn’t defiant.

“Just an observation.”

You’re all escorted to some sort of waiting room while things are prepared. Or lounge. You’re not sure. There are plenty of places to sit on newly made wooden furniture.

Keira seems delighted at all of it. “I’ve never seen these styles before.” She plays with a fabric on a couch.

“Vispum.” Laki says.

Looks like you have some time to kill. You see a few non-priestly people walking around freely. Young priestesses, or maybe priestesses in training, constantly sneak peeks at you.

“They’re not supposed to chase boys. In fact, they shouldn’t be talking to a man at all outside of their duties!” She says loud enough for them to hear. They vanish behind corners, but their heads quickly pop out again.

Your pokemon all seem to want to behave themselves here. Mostly you think they’re just getting used to a new environment. Dice is the only one really making any noise.

You decide to play with your pokemon, but as you do, you have a few questions for Keira.

“Is vispum from the islands?” You pick up Dice and lift him into the air. Your mind and body are occupied.

“No. It was brought here a long time ago. We didn’t start using it right away because the people that brought it said it was just another plant.” She says, watching Bella sneak up and leap onto your back.

“We removed it.” Laki chimes in. “Wiped it out during a purge of all things not native to the islands. Even kicked the pirates out of Take. At least, most of them, for awhile.”

Keira nods. “But some survived. The priests said it adapted to the islands and we found all sorts of uses for it. It became a big part of our culture. That was a long time ago.”

Gobble leaps onto you now, too. The three of them are almost enough to playfully wrestle you down. Mace comes along and looks at you. You decide to just give up and fall over, instead of letting him try to add his weight. You and your Pokemon laugh as they pile on.

“It had a choice.” Makai says, coming back in with tea carried by two young girls by his side. “Change itself, or die out.” He clasps his hands. “The lodge is ready.”

He escorts you and your friends to it. Keira wishes you and Laki good travels. That's a funny way of putting it. You noticed how she was going to pat you on the back, but stopped herself. You guess she doesn't want to do it around other clergy people.

You’re given a towel to change into, then you and Laki meet in the steamy small hutt. You try to keep your thoughts to playing with pokemon instead of how Laki’s body looks in a towel.

An older priestess is in the lodge with you. The others are all gone. She sets some tea down on the flat wooden floor.

Your Pokemon crowd around you. For some reason they all wanted to stay close instead of go with Keira. They won't be drinking any tea, though.

You feel the heat start to rise as you look into the cup. This is sounding more intense than you expected.

"I'll leave you to it." The priestess bows. "Normally we ensure someone is here to watch over you, but as a trainer, I'm sure you trust your pokemon with that task."
