TWITTER: twitter.com/planefagARCHIVES: https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/kant-o-celle-quest-a-kantai-collection-game-transcribed-from-4chan.345865/Since I've been away awhile, we're gonna run a short omake to flesh out the rest of the ~universe~ of the story and get back into things. AYEP*****The Extender's running lights dim as it banks away, still stowing its boom as it turns for Mt. Pleasant. Naval dawn is upon you, the horizon just beginning to lighten; barely discernible against the faint glow of your HUD. You rubberneck for the hundredth time but your wingman's right where he ought to be, keeping good formation, the wind-weathered discoloration of his Skyhawk a two-tone mottling in the NVG's green hues. You unload carefully, double-checking your trim, and make sure the rookie's tight on your wing before flicking off the running lights. The altitude scale starts ticking up gently once more as you climb for angels twenty again; a compromise between your nominal sea control mission and the A-4's short legs. The radar in the old M models work - more or less - but they're not much use against what you're hunting, and a low cloud deck has been dogging you all damn night. The E-3 was -“Dagger, Spyglass here. Status?”Talking, apparently; that incongruously dry accent still strange to your ears. You learned English in Florida. “Just finished tanking, Pit Stop's on egress.”“Jolly,” comes the reply. “Priority intercept; unknown contacts bearing two-one-five from your location. Intercept at buster and get eyes-on.” You blink. “Unknown contact?” you repeat faintly, not sure you heard correctly. “Surface or airborne?”“We're not sure,” comes the grim reply, the crisp accent flaking a bit. “We need eyes on.” You swing your little flight towards the unknowns, waiting for you out in the dark. The course takes you towards Staten Island...... not too close. But close enough. [ ] Pull more altitude. [ ] Ingress in the weeds.-----[ ] Nose hot.[ ] Nose cold.

I'm pretty sure that we're playing as an Argie due to the fact that we are refuelling from an extender from Mt. Pleasant and the fact that we are flying an A-4. So does this mean that the Argies are actually working with the Brits or is there an American force there? Do forgive me if this has already been brought up, I just got here.also, if we're in an A-4, can we have RATOs?

You lead your wingman down through the cloud deck around angels seven, slowly pushing the old Skyhawk to military power. The airframe creaks slightly as it leans into the denser air, but despite your religious attention to the old steam gauges, the old M-model seems to be settling into her stride again, the old J-52 turbine sounding happy to stretch her legs. You level out around five, rubbernecking out of old habit - you're still not used to the NVGs, and you doubt you ever will. The RWR blinks sedately, a new contact appearing some degrees to starboard - RDR-1500. One of the Fennecs out of Rio Grande, most likely, or the new “field” on Staten Island itself. “Spyglass, update?” “No joy,” that accent comes back, flakier than ever now. “Copy,” you say faintly. The sky's lightening with each passing minute, but it's still dark as a coal sack under the clouds, sea and sky twin planes of churning mist that merge near the distant horizon.“One of your coastal choppers is coming in from the south-west to have a peek,” Spyglass informs you helpfully.” You acknowledge absently, one eye glued to your radar altimeter as you dip towards two thousand feet, the airframe thrumming quietly as the old jet pushes for five-fifty. The narrow strip of sky between the decks seems to be narrowing as you approach the Banks; a thin fog rising atop the shallower waters. Scanning carefully, you look for something, anything - but even ship wakes would be hard to pick out through an NVG, in the fog, this low. Your nugget is sticking close - not much stick time, but he flies on instruments pretty well, and you haven't seen him spook yet. And god knows, you've tried. “Spyglass, what's my twenty?” “You're on top of them, or should be,” Spyglass returns. “Windage-wise - we can't peg the range.” [ ] Lower. Lower still. [ ] Get a little height and flash the radar for a minute - from this range, you should be able to firm up the track.

You nudge the stick forward, slipping into the upper swirls of the early-morning mist forming on the water, keeping the throttle against the firewall. Some instinct compels you to flip the NVG monocle up and out of the way, making sure it latches securely in the stowed position - you can only hope it stays there. Blinking the green glow out of your right eye, you stare straight ahead, waiting for something, some movement, some light to snag on the corner of your vision and tug. There. Dark dots against the lightening clouds, their motion barely discernible but for the swirls and whorls of turbulence marring the ceiling as the morning wind picks up strength. “Bogeys,” your nugget says calmly, “four o'clock, angels five.” You put it at three, but at least he saw them. They're a good distance off, and hard to count, but you pick out at least three vics - maybe four - as they sink into the mist, holding a loose V formation. They spread out into a loose line, each vic still keeping their proscribed formations. Following their bearing, you spot something odd backlit by the gray horizon, a charcoal smear in the mists. Funnel smoke. [ ] Flyby the aircraft - identify those first.[ ] Flyby the surface contact - identify that. [ ] Follow the bogeys in, if you can.

>>1069196>[X] Stay low and circle around - you didn't lug this ordinance all this distance for nothing, dammit. This is the bounce option right?
You lead your nugget in at military power, angling towards the bogeys as you slip down to five-hundred, hand rock-solid on the stick, ready to counter the slightest tremor of turbulence that could easily smear you across a mile of ocean. With surface and sky smeared into one gray morass by the gathering mists, you're trusting your life to the trim tabs of the old bird and the firmness of her aging hydraulics - but she punches through the thick air like a dart, swift and sure. You remember the rattle and bang when you used this ship for your re-certification check ride; both of you old dinosaurs swinging into the saddle again. She seems to have found her stride. You hope you have, too. Their formation's beginning to split, two vics heeling right and two more motoring on straight when you pass under them at almost twice their airspeed, maybe more - the briefest glimpse of old wings catching your eye. “Spyglass, spyglass, this is Dagger One,” you call, even as the sky explodes with a dark snarl of smoke somewhere off your nose. “Tally twelve biplane torpedo bombers at my angels, bearing two-six-niner-”krumph“-and taking triple-A!” you manage, easing your bird lower as the sea ahead of you lights up with distant muzzle flashes, flak bursts blossoming ahead of you. You thumb the side-button on your stick instinctively; guns aren't selected, but the gun camera begins filming anyways. You've got the smile, and your new friends are providing the camera flash as Dagger flight screams through the mist and swirling funnel-smoke. Attention focused on your controls and the artificial horizon, controlling your sink rate and twitching your nose out of the drink every time the morning breeze snags at you, its all you can do to keep from cartwheeling across the ocean face-first - - but then you're through, easing off the deck as cold sweat trickles down your brow, rubbernecking to see bright orange tracers the size of muskmelons floating lazily towards you, too slow and far short. You try to speak, swallow, and try again. “Tally four cruisers, Spyglass, at least.“Classification?” You blink, checking the brief, shadowed afterimages in your mind. “Two three-stackers, and two galumphing goddamned big ones!” “... copy, Dagger,” the AWACs replies, the crispness of his accent definitely wilting now. “Two CAs, two CLs.” Behind you the sea is lighting up like a fireworks display, the two biggest ships lighting up along their length like a fireworks display. Their muzzle blasts part the mist with each concussive blast, kicking up gouts of water as the old biplanes motor on in them, splitting up to attempt a pincer attack. The cruisers are keeping their broadsides square, rather then turning their sterns to the incoming attack as they ought. Bumping with BIG SEVEN
You decide to reverse with an easy chandelle, coming back around for another flyby parallel to your previous track; avoiding the bristling broadsides of the big ships. “Dagger,” your AWACS comes back, “we're vectoring additional assets. What's your fuel at?” “Pushing our luck,” you inform him. “Drop tanks running dry.” “Engage surface vessels at your discretion and RTB,” Spyglass informs. “Helo has eyes-on - they're abyssals.” “Who?” you demand as you line the dark smudges of ships up again in your HUD. “Spee,” the controller replies. “Von Spee's squadron.” “Well,” you breathe, “it's about damn time.” You let off the throttle a smidge and drift left, letting your wingman slide up even with you, widening your spacing. “CL furthest right,” you call, punching your drained drop tanks off, then flipping your master arm to ON. The wide circle of the rocket reticule snaps into view. You'd prefer to do this from above; a steep, diving attack that keeps the natural spread of dumb rockets concentrated within a reasonably tight circle - but there's something you don't like about the clouds, something wrong, something off. Something's itching at your neck, begging you to yank on the stick, peel this bird off the deck and split-S into the clouds, safe and sound. You push your stick forward a little more, into emergency power, needles tickling the redline as you sink lower, lower, the choppy South Atlantic seeming to reach up for you. Through the fog you catch glimpses of your target; a dark, low-slung silhouette on the horizon, twin masts rising high above the surface, bracketing the bright winks of muzzle flashes as she opens up on you. Flak begins to blossom with muted krump krump krumps ahead - a barrier barrage; unsophisticated, but effective enough. The automatics open up a second later; still too far out, but trying nonetheless, the big bright medium-caliber tracers seeming to float towards you like incandescent footballs. Shrapnel clatters and trembles through the stick but your bird punches through the dark haze of smoke to find your target six thousand yards distant and closing; a low-slung apparition from hell wreathed in sea-mist as her muzzle flashes kindle her flanks alight - - you thumb the stud and let fly, the old Zuni pods erupting with a thrilling roar of igniting rocket motors as they ripple off their rounds. Tracers and rockets slash by one another, contrails crisscrossing in a kinetic duel - and then you're through, screaming over the whitecaps at max throttle as the spent Zuni pods fall off the pylons to somersault through the water behind. You lift the nose off the deck for a heartbeat, buying some space to rubberneck, and -- you see those big blobby tracers climbing heavenward to meet the dark falling dots of aircraft as they punch through the cloud deck in steep dives. But it's the second story that most will care about more I'm sure. For you see, I was sent from Yokosuka to DC to deliver a briefing to the JCS. As I'm sure many of you will remember my "DDs are not for Lewds" powerpoint you will know that I like to put anime pictures in my powerpoints. So here I am giving a presentation to the JCS and my final slide is a simple "thank you for your time" slide with the attached image. And as soon as this slide comes up Admiral John Richardson, the MOTHER FUCKING CNO, starts choking on his coffee and whispers one, single word, "Arizona." Now this of course peaks my interest. So the next day I track him down in his office and low and behold there is a fucking figma of Mutsu on his desk. I of course, immediately loose my shit and then ask him "So, you know about KCQ?" and he replies "Colonel, what I do in my spare time is mine to know. Just like what you do in yours is yours to know." And then he kicked me out. So while I can neither confirm nor deny that he knows about KCQ, I do know that he knows about KanColle and I find that fucking hilarious.

You track the plummeting fighters carefully, easing off the stick and unloading your controls, letting your little Skyhawk punch through the air like a dart, screaming hell-bent for the horizon. You catch the faint sheen of light on plexigas as they roll their lift vector onto you, their planform silhouettes compressing as they pull out - “Nugget, bandits low six!” you call - “watch me!” You fight the urge to give her some pedal and check your tail; trusting instead in the tail-warning radar -- you hear the first faint buzz of the alarm and flick the stick back, twisting through three-quarters of a narrow rudder roll before breaking into a slight guns-defense turn, nose-down. Your nugget remembered well, the thunder of his J-52 rattling your canopy as your flight paths twine and cross; tracers flashing past on either side, brilliant against the dark sea and sky as bandits try to pull lead on your nose or aim for dead-center and miss. You roll into the reversal to put your nose on them again, finding a whole goddamned gaggle executing a zoom-climb, planforms flashing into view as they go for the vertical reversal. [ ] Take them up on it. [ ] Keep it in the weeds.

“DAGGER ENGAGED DEFENSIVE DAGGER ENGAGED DEFENSIVE!” you call as the bandits heel over inverted and float there, patiently pausing at the top of their loop as they wait for you to zip by underneath so they can tuck into your tail. You're already in a gentle left-hand turn, showing them your tail as you try to extend away. “Dagger is engaged defensive on the deck, extending north!” you repeat as the bandits twist their half-loop into diagonals to follow your course change; you spent less smash than they'd figured with your rudder-roll evasives, and they find themselves having to chase you a bit. “Lightnings inbound, two minutes!” Spyglass replies as you watch the bandits dive for your tail once more - stubby, wide fuselages and square wingtips, something that ends with -cat. You stand your fighter on her right wingtip, watching a vic as they dive on you, waiting for their guns to point right at you before twisting into a left-hand roll with your rudder as you yank the stick into your belly. Tracers flash past on your right as you break left, then keep rolling through inverted, the whitecaps zipping past close enough to wet your hair. You see tracers floating into the sea ahead as they snap high over your belly, then the fighters themselves, their radial power plants blasting flames from their cowlings as they floor WEP to zoom-climb out again. “We don't have two goddamned minutes!” you snarl. You can run, or you can fight, but you can't do both. Two jinks is more luck then you thought you had left - you need to start defending. But if they get greedy...[ ] Start fighting. Try to outlast.[ ] Keep your foot down, and pray for those Lightnings.
