She playfully sticks her tongue out and twirls. She’s not taking you seriously.

“You just wait until Laki hears about this.” You pull out the big gun. You can’t help but feel a little bad that this seems to work. She stops messing around and gives you her full attention now.

“I’m not mad. I'm just disappointed you aren't being as good as you could be.”

Her roses droop. That hit harder than you intended. You try to stay strong, despite every urge in your body wanting to hug the adorable little pokemon.

She makes some motions and noises. You’re not like Keira, but you can read the meaning and intent. She’s making excuses and basically saying it was just a joke.

“It wasn’t funny. You could have really caused problems. I’m going to put you away until dinner time. I want you to think about what you did.” You take out her pokeball and tap and feel terrible. That last look she gave you is etched into your head.

“You’d make a good father.” Val tells you, leaning over and offering a warm smile. You keep your eyes up to hers, despite the soft, wet skin showing outside of her small towel. Considering that you were just accused of spying on her, you really put in the effort to not even steal even a subconscious glance.

She gets the same look that Hana gets sometimes. “Y-you do, huh?” Her eyes narrow. It’s like she can’t figure out your meaning, you you in general.

“Yeah. I mean, with the way Bella sees the two of us.”

She puts her hand on her chest and breathes a sigh of relief. “Oh! Of course. This probably sounds silly, but for a second I thought you meant that you two were,” she leans in, “sleeping together.” She laughs again. “How absurd is that? Of course you haven’t slept with Laki.”

You think about how you woke up against Laki a few times. “Well, technically that’s not really true, but it’s not as serious as it sounds. It was just a frie-” You’re cut off at the sound of Gobble knocking over your pans. You laugh. “Are you hungry?”

He nods.

You go find somewhere to get dressed and start doing prep work for dinner while Val heads off back to where she was washing up. You set up a small cooking station and look around figuring out where you’ll sleep.

“Herb!” You hear Val yell. It’s not a panicked tone, but it is concerned. You jog over to see what’s going on. Mace, Gobble, Boldore, and the Mudkip follow.

You see Val still in her towel, pointing to a small blue pokemon. It’s playfully ripping her clothes to shreds!

“Where are your pokemon?” You ask.

She points to her fancy purse next to her clothes. The small pokemon rips out a pocket. You gasp for a moment, but all it does is knock around some lipstick and leave the pokeballs alone. It’d honestly be pretty cute if you didn’t like how well her purse matched her outfit.

Cyndaquil was my first pokemon and it was pretty much the only pokemon I even used when I was like 4-7 years old.

I ended up defeating Red with my level 100 Typhlosion and nothing but a bunch of level 10-20 HM slaves.

On impulse I started a new game because I enjoyed the game a lot and wanted to experience the adventure again, but I was struck by a profound depression when I did.

Still, fast forward a couple decades and these days I don't really like any starters. I prefer not to use them, even.

Feels kind of generic, you know? I want my team to consist of mons I caught myself in the wild, something about receiving a one of a kind mon in a lab felt really sterile to me.

You can "domesticate" pretty much anything. The danger never really goes away completely with more wild and instinctual creatures, but you can get damn close to having one as a pet if you're smart and understand their psychology.

You decide to trust it. After all, one bad experience shouldn’t change your attitude, right?

You open your arms wide and close your eyes shut.

“Herb!” You hear. You hope you’re right about this.

You feel hot breath and teeth on your neck, then a sharp pain. You spin and grab your neck as the pokemon leaps off of you. Your mind reels trying to figure out what happened. Are you okay? Are you dying?

You feel on your neck some more. You don’t feel any blood, just a sharp pain. It must have been superficial.

The pokemon is facing you with it’s back turned to the others. It rips something to shreds. You look closer and see it’s got the stone your brother gave you. But what it’s shredding is the fabric of the thin rope you used as a necklace. Well, that could have gone a lot worse.

Your hand is still on your neck. You look to Val and the pokemon, and they have a look of absolute horror. Before you can say anything, the pokemon is pelted with Rock Blasts. It’s head cocks forward from the impact. Gobble is running up now too, winding up a punch.

“Look out!” You yell as you rush over to try to grab it out of the way.

The pokemon is still trying to figure out what hit it as you run. It looks up at you just in time for Gobble’s fist to impact it in the back. You’re too slow.

The small pokemon makes a pathetic squeak and goes limp as it’s head and limbs try to follow it’s body as it sails into you. You catch it and feel it go limp. It’s cute little eyes look up and seem to ask “why” before it slips into unconsciousness.

Everyone is looking at you as you cradle the poor little guy.

“Herb, are you alright?” Valerie runs over and looks at your neck. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight.” she says, breathless. She examines the pokemon. “Oh. He’s out like a light.”

Mace and Gobble look relieved. You guess from their perspective, things looked a lot scarier than they actually were. Gobble looks a little guilty. The cute face on this pokemon must melt his heart as much as yours.

“What are you going to do now?” The blonde girl asks. You peer over her and see the Mudkip and Boldore watching from the sidelines.

You feel terrible. “Come on, lil’ guy. Let’s get you some rest and a hot meal.”

You take him back to camp. Gobble keeps looking up at him. Once you’re back, you lay him down on a soft bed of leafs and get to work boiling some water. You’re tired, and with a group this big, stew sounds like a good idea.

“Quite the following you’ve developed.” Val says. She insisted on helping. She’s not nearly as fast or precise with cutting as Hana. Actually, she’s pretty bad at this in general. More of a hindrance than a help. You guess you can forgive her, though. She’s wearing some of your spare clothes since hers were destroyed. She has plenty of outfits, but they’re all on her yacht.

Boldore and Mace are chatting. Mace seems really distracted since you got him back, and you’re starting to think it’s not just from being tired.

Valerie ends up misunderstanding your instructions and putting in way more salt than you had asked. Luckily it’s before you tossed everything into the pot. You sigh and get ready to dump out the water and start over.

She pets Totodile and Mudkip with her freshly washed hands, then goes back to grab some more food to cut up.

But seriously, teach her some shit. Maybe ask how often she's had the opportunity to cook for others, and stretch that into what she's hoping to get out of her journey. Multitasking is essential for a cook, so she may as well try holding a conversation while she learns!

Always a good idea to know the basics to something when you'll be depending on yourself for the foreseeable future.

“Valerie, wait.” You gently grab her hand before she lays it on the fresh food. You point out that she just finished washing her hands and then touched wild pokemon.

She looks embarrassed, but gives a small laugh, too. You spend some time showing her some basics of how to cook.

Valerie, while having a lot of good intentions, doesn’t seem to grasp how much work is actually involved in, well, pretty much everything. She dives into each task with a smile, but gives up easily, feeling discouraged at the first road bump.

It takes triple the normal amount of time, but you two end up having some fun with it after a while. She even swipes a food covered finger on your nose and laughs. As tired as you are, you do too. She’s pretty charming, once she opens up.

You talk a little about your home lives. She’s more interested in hearing about yours than talking about hers. She takes it all in and only really looks surprised when you mention things like how your grandpa used an old wood stove, or when your mom got really mad at your dad for breaking that new washing machine.

“You know, Herb. I have absolutely no idea what to make of you.” Valerie says, scooping up some stew. She turns around offers you a sip from the ladle. “What do you think about me? Absolute honesty. Don’t hold anything back.”

You take a sip. It's edible. Not great, but edible. It reminds you of what your little brother accomplished after that two week period he wanted to be a cook like you.

Dad warned you about these questions from a girl.

Bring up her consideration of Hana's recharging, or her simple willingness to help you cook here. You never pushed her for that, after all. She just did it, and that speaks volumes about where her priorities lie when she's dealing with people - help where you can.

We don't know her whole story, though. I'm sure she could nuance our view of her if she spoke with us more. She avoids talking about herself in general, and she needs to learn to get over that. She may have grown up differently from others due to her status, but everyone has something like that separating them from others.

When she learns how to talk comfortably about her own life without fear of alienating people, then she'll know she's done it. It'll be hit-and-miss in the meantime, though, so if she wants to unload when the small slips start to pile up then we'll be available. Just don't expect anything too spectacular out of us, because we're not any more special than she is.

“You’re pretty.” You tell her as you step forward and take another taste test from the ladle.

“Herb.” She sounds a bit surprised. You are standing pretty close. Her lack of bra becomes obvious as her chest moves up and down.

“I think you’re really disconnected from everyone else, though. Maybe even spoiled. I don’t know if that’s the right word.” Her eyebrows go up in surprise, but she restrains herself from saying anything. “But you’re trying. You’ve been really considerate about Hana, and putting yourself out there learning to cook. You genuinely want to help, and that says a lot about you. I don’t know a lot about you and I could be wrong. I’m just going off what I’ve seen so far. I get that you’ve grown up a bit differently than everyone else, and I think you’re a little overly conscious of that. You let it be something bigger than it is. When you learn to talk comfortably with people without worrying about weirding them out, you’ll do great. It just might be a lot of effort getting from here to there, but a lot of mistakes on the way. If that happens, I’m here for you to listen. But I don’t really know where I am on my own journey, so don’t expect me to be all that great about it either, okay?”

You really went off on a thing there. The silence is killing you.

“Nobody’s ever talked to me like that before.” She says, flatly. “Thank you.” After a few blinks, her blank eyes get a little bit of life into them. “Thank you. I mean it.” She gives you a hug. It starts out a little awkward. she holds you tight and you flinch when she touches where you got zapped before. “Sorry! I uhh, guess I need to practice that, too.”

You both laugh. You’re not a big initiator of physical contact, either. You get it.

You take out Belladonna. “It’s dinner time.” You offer her some food. She warily takes it and starts eating, but keeps an eye on you. You think she’s trying to figure out what your feelings are towards her right now.

Totodile is up and moving around, but still very much far from a threat. He makes himself right at home when you offer some food.

Gobble is slobbering at this point and downs his stew too fast, burning his tongue and running around. As odd as it sounds, you’re almost glad, because it takes his mind off of feeling guilty about Totodile. It’s not serious.

Mace and Boldore eat together. After Boldore gets a fill, he gives you a casual salute and heads off into the woods.

“Is he going to be okay?” You ask Mace.

Mace nods, watching his friend leave. He really does seem to have a lot on his mind.

Bella makes a noise as she finishes her meal. She’s making a play for your attention.

You go to Totodile and Mudkip. On your way over, you stop to give Bella a quick hug and a pat on the head.

She looks incredibly relieved. There’s still some unfinished business there, but just knowing where she stands seems to lift a lot off of her shoulders.

You split the leftovers between these two and Gobble. Gobble is eager to down his quickly.

Mudkip is more restrained. It’s a bit shy, but hungry, too. It gives you a happy smile from the food. You guess it sees the wait as worth it. Once it’s done, it rubs its head against your leg, the Valerie’s. It’s a friendly pokemon, but seems to need a lot of encouragement to get out of it’s shell. You can understand that.

Totodile, seemingly having forgotten the events of the day, quickly eats his. With some practice, he might give Gobble a run for his money. He leaps over and shreds the remain rags of Val’s clothes. He burps her tiny pink pnaties up and you pretend not to notice.

Wait. Those, the thin rope, the pocket lining of her purse... “It’s the fabric!”

Val looks over to you. The Mudkip in her hands licks her face. “What?”

“Everything Totodile tore to shreds, it’s made of the same stuff.”

Totodile goes back to ripping up her panties and looks up. He makes a playful growl noise. You toss him a sock from your bag made of out the same fabric. He absolutely destroys it before it lands.

“I think you’re onto something.” Valerie says. “Maybe he has an owner.” She taps him with a pokeball.

Boop. Boop. Boop. Click!

“Oh!” She covers her mouth. “I didn’t expect that to work.”

You both look at each other. The story behind this little guy starts to become clear. He used to have an owner, but now he doesn’t.

“I.. oops I didn't mean to- Did you want...” She holds the ball out to you.
