Beaten but not broken, we have retreated to Howarth's Crossing. The river provides a natural barrier for us to hold against our pursuers. With the choice between dying in ignoble retreat, or a fighting stand, we've chosen to fight.

Our pursuers will be here soon. Two maniples, maybe more. We'll paint the old river red.

The Pytherian Legion forces march on Howarth's Crossing, an we must pray that our preperations are enough to blunt their first attack.

If we fall here, the way to Isfelt is open and the refuges strung out behind us like the segmentations of a snake are prey to the Theurgs of Pytheria, the Legionaires and the Velites, and their lives forfiet and their souls bonded to servitude.

So we stand here.

And we hold them.

For as long as we can.

Their first wave are Weidergangers, and some seem familiar - likely those we slew in the village pressed back into service. The Pytherians have learned a valuable lesson in three months of warfare. March the expendable ones first, because we sell each inch of soil dearly.

A small splinter group is going to secure the southern crossing, lead by a Scholae Legionis.

An Archtheurge - one of the two we saw wait on the Palatine in Crow's Bridge - has arrived as well, but her unit looks like they're simply waiting for something. We can't tell what at present.

Remember that the Weidergangers cannot cross into the stream without great encouragement, and if the're in it without the constant support of their thaumathurges, their bonding spells will soon ablate and break in the cleansing flow of the river. The human legionares have no such easy answer. So for those we should employ hard iron.

Here's what the scouts can tell you, sergeant.

The broad marked cliffs cannot easily be climbed, but as a FULL TURN [Consumes all prof + ½ alac], it is possible for the dedicated.

The River itself can be crossed in other directions than the ford, but doing so is DIFFICULT
Difficult terrain needs to be moved through using PROF, and makes your VULNERABLE which negates SHIELDS and DODGE. Cross the river at your own peril, it is possible but we cannot protect ourselves while doing so.

It usually does. Theurges are needed to corral the MINDLESS, such as golems, sprites or weidergangers. Theurgs are also the Pytherian religious authority, and are usually the ones who light the banefire braziers to celebrate victory or mark events. Without their local authority, in this foreign land, many of the legionaires would no doubt STUMBLE or suffer MORALE SHOCK.

For those of you wondering how to place shots across the river or at far targets, perhaps Albretch shoud have mentioned this before he died.

Naturally, Javelins are thrown projectiles and so cannot increase beyond their max range without special skills ["Go Long!"].

Rifles, bows, crossbows and other projectile shooters have a listed maximum range before penalties accrue. If you wish to make long shots, it's -10 to your skill per hex beyond your range.

A proper Republic Volunteer Archer is supposed to have even odds of hitting at rng 6, and squeeze in the occassional hail magdelena at 9.

Keep in mind that COVER, like trees or other targets usually interfere with your shot also.

This will have to be a multi-stage plan then. First, we need to take out some of the wiedergangers using traps to open the way to the thaumaturge controlling them, then kill the thaumaturge. This will create a threat to the archteurge's unit from the east, which might draw away their bodyguard and open the archteurge to sniper fire.

Even if the bodyguard won't move, killing the wiederganger controller is beneficial in itself, so this plan won't go to waste.

A note on relics, artefacts, acroutements and such sundry

a [SPECIFIC] effect only applies to a specific unit, and may represent a special item that squad has.

A [General] effect applies to the entire unit.

A sword would only be used by one unit, and thus only resolves its functionality when used by a 1 single soldier. Any bonus and malus applies to that soldier only.

An inspiring battle standard would grant its bonus to the entire unit.

The sword [Twist] is specific, and represents a single soldier wielding a specific kind of sword. if utilized, it is assumed any effects apply to the MAIN UNIT / Soldier - in this case granting a
+5 crit chance
a +5 crit fail chance
a match bonus (11, 22, 33 . . .)
and Duelist's Luck
but also a -20 effective skill and a 4 base damage.

For attacks that have a specific item associated with it, it's a tremendous help if you >-indicate the use of it

Command, there appears to be a mistake. I requested to move 2,2,1, not 5,6. If the Skulkers have some sort of grapple/pull, then I suppose this makes sense, but I would like clarification if that is the case. Pic related is my intended move.

As for orders; engage the skulker with the first four dice, fire at the Legionnaires crossing the river with the next two. I suppose.

Command went back and forth on that one. You specifically assigned striking the enemies to your 5 - and the enemy formation is to the 5, 5.

It's not that Smart Processing is particularly onerous in isolated cases, but with >12 players adjusting ad-hoc to what they might have wanted to do becomes a problematic stack-on of constant adjustments.

What Command will do in this instance is assign the damage you would have delivered - 7 - to a Legionaire at the end of your turn, which will cripple that unit.

It did feel exeptionally unfair to mark down a miss only for an entire cohort to pile on to you

This, however, is a processing issue. The Arcani do in fact have Grappling Hooks with Pull, but they didn't use them in this instance. Your position will be adjusted at turn end - then Command will re-simulate the arcani + archer firing.
