The last 24 hours have been pretty hectic; you became a Nature magician and promised Yoolie, a young witch, to teach her the ways of… plants, also you took under your wing two of those rascals “Fist Magicians” OZ (Oswald) and UZ (Ursula) as your students too, by force. Of course gaining power means you have to abuse it somehow.

Also you have to restore the balance of the elements, since the world is in a new Ice age thanks to the Ice Wizards. But who cares about that?

Now your best apprentice Yoolie is doing her magic to UZ, and by magic I mean cutting her hair. You’re waiting with OZ for her to finish.

“This table is pretty good, very resistant” You say while gently smacking the table.

“Yeah, that Yoolie is very polyfunctional” OZ says with his face on the table.

“What happened? Why the long face?”

“It’s this damn haircut…”

“Why you let her cut your hair anyway?”

“Why do you mean by that? She said it was mandatory.”

“Mandatory to what?”

“To become a disciple here!”

“I don’t remember saying that...”

“Ugh…” He smacks his face on the table.”

“I guess some kind of uniform should be mandated, but it’s my first day, I haven’t thought about this type of stuff.”

“Ta-dah! It’s done! Look at Ursula!” She doesn’t look very different aside for her hair looking more pompous.

“That’s not your name, silly” She grabs UZ’s cheek in a very condescending fashion.

“She doesn’t care.”

“Don’t say that Oswald! We’re classmates! We’re all here to learn magic… but not today! Look at the time! It’s getting late.”

“Excuse me!” Yoolie stares at UZ.

After a minute of intense silence and everyone evading everyone else’s gaze, you decided to say something.

“I need a wizard hat.”

“Wizard hat?” OZ seems interest.

“My parents say that wizard hats are a mockery of our craft… They never let me use one…” Yoolie wants to kill the mood with her anecdote.

“Who cares what your old folks say!” UZ intervenes. “Master is building something from the scratch! He can do the hell he wants…. I-I think…”

“T-then I’ll make you a Wizard hat!” Yoolie takes one of her coats and starts to sew you a new hat!

“Where do you keep those things hidden?” OZ asks Yoolie. “Like the hammer, scissors and—“

“It’s magic! I know you guys don’t know about beginner magic, but this is a bit too much.” She can’t hide her smile.

“We’re not dumb!” UZ says. “…Just uninformed.”

“Okay, your hat is ready, Wilge!” She hands you a very pointy and important looking hat, you wear it with pride, you can tell everyone was envious.

You had a pleasant chat with everyone, like you were forming a bond of friendship! After a while you proposed to play charades. After 2 rounds of playing, UZ and OZ asked you and Yoolie to stop using magic for charades, because it’s unfair… This was the first time you ever had any fun with someone your age. It was really fun.

Going to bed was kind of different. Since you only brought some pillows with you, the great magician of nature made one big comfy bed for everyone to sleep in. Yoolie made a pillow barrier for boys and girls to keep distance of each other…

As your mind drifted to the land of dreams, you hear a voice in your head.

“Cutie! It’s me!” It’s the childish voice of the goddess of nature, Physilakawaka. “That’s not my name.”

“Sorry, I’m not good with names.”

“I’m the goddess of your element, it’s the least you can do!”

You shrug.

“Just call me Phimi…” She sounds kind of defeated. “Remember the whole deal about beating the Ice magicians.”

“It’s kind of fuzzy to me right now; call me in a few hours I need to sleep.”

“You’re resting right now! Sheesh! Cutie, we need to talk about so much… But I guess this could wait, it’s not like you’re prepared anyway.”

You wake up, the sun is rising! No one else is awake. D’aww, Yoolie is moving her hands like a little doggy having a nightmare… Ehem… You get out of bed.

“Go outside!” Almost like a whisper, you hear Phimi’s voice. You left the Tree base.

“Hello, Wilge! If my impeccable disguise fooled, I’m none other than—“

“Phimi, I know.” She looks… different.

“You’re not making this fun! And I’ll be your master anyway. You only can see me and hear me! And you can talk to me telepathically, so you don’t look like a weirdo talking to no one.”

“Tele-what?”

“Just think like you’re talking to me, and you will be talking to me! That simple! Also around your neck is a… necklace with a rock, with that rock you can communicate with me! I don’t always respond though. Now follow my movements, we’re learning basic non murdering nature magic!” She starts dancing! You follow her movements and spend most of the morning “training” with Phimi. Once the lesson is over she goes back to the rock, she says she needs to do goddess stuff.

Congratulations! You learn Competent level Nature magic! That includes sensing more fruit and vegetables (even if they just got planted), tree moving without deforming it or taking their lives away and … that’s it. It’s basically what you already did yesterday without destroying life. Phimi implied this can be taught to your apprentices, but the process is not going to be as fast (or they going to get as good) as it was with you.

“It’s time to some god damn training.” You say out loud, proof of what is to come.

You go inside the base and wake up everyone.

“We going boss…” UZ and OZ say. It seems they have been always a team…

“Yes! Wilge!” She does a kip up and jumps ready to tackle her new challenge.

You all take a good breakfast together, and by good, I mean one portion of the frozen rations UZ stole yesterday. Yoolie doesn’t seem to enjoy the food.

“This frozen food is not… that good, hehe…” She tries to be cheerful.

“What are you talking about?! This is the shit!” OZ muffles with his mouth full.

“Agree!” UZ says too. Both of them have no manners at all and they are devouring the whole thing. In your humble opinion this is a below average meal, the frozen status kind of ruins it a little even after heating it up. You wonder what kind of stuff they ate in Fist Magician’s base if they find this so tasty.

After an average meal, you and your students go outside, you start training them in the way of the leaf.

“Sense the nature around you.” You’re meditating, sensing nature should be the first step to mold it in your convenience.

“I’m sensing it all right; I think an ant is on my butt crack.”

“OZ! Pay attention!”

“Me pay attention? You’re the one with a spider on your head!”

“AAAH!!” UZ runs around, you take the spider off her head and let it leave in the cold. Poor UZ got scared.

“Guys! Stop making a ruckus! I’m trying to sense nature!” Yoolie gets “mad”, her voice is too soft for it to sound angry.

“S-sorry…” UZ hides behind you in shame. You tell her to sit down and keep doing the exercise.

It took long, but they manage to sense nature… you assume… they assume too. Nobody is sure if this is working. After they complete their test, one by one you start doing the same thing Phimi did to awaken your powers. She did explain that in your case she gave you some of her power and awakens yours, but with them you only can be the catalyst of their prowess in nature.

“Bo— Reihan never did something like this… I guess he’s really full of shit.”

“Watch your language!” Yoolie is getting madder and madder.

“I wonder If someone could learn every element.”

“You can! That’s why I’m on this mission!” Yoolie says. UZ and OZ wonder what she is talking about.

“It’s not important now.” You interrupt.

You ask your pupils to move one branch of one of three trees you’re pointing, if they take the snow off it individually, they will be successful in this new trial. It took a long time, but OZ was the first one to shake that branch.

“This is the shit!” Yoolie stares at him. “I mean nice?”

Seems the girls are struggling to overcome this test. They seem to be getting more and more nervous, like there is something they need to prove and it tense them.

“Guys! Can you be quiet please?!” Yoolie interrupts you. She looks like in the verge of crying.

“S-sorry.” You couldn’t give a better response.

Poor girl is suffering like no other, but how? She should be able to do it! She’s the only one that learns normal magic!

“I-it’s just a matter of time!” Yoolie knows the pressure is on her. Both OZ and UZ are looking smug right now.

You go where Yoolie plummeted, she’s crying just like yesterday.

“Maybe you need a little help. Here…” You dump some soil on her right hand. “You need to feel the life force of nature, Yoolie.”

“Okay… sniff*… I’ll try once again!” She gets up and tries to move the branch… nothing happens, but she keeps trying anyway. You put your magnificent hat on her head.

“I gave here some magic power, maybe now you can do it!” It’s a lie, you hope it helps.

Surprisingly it’s working! But is a soft movement and it can’t take the snow off the branch.

“It’s the soil!” UZ exclaims from afar!

“Yeah! Let’s dump her some soil on here!”

In a desperate attempt at helping, both of your students throw a bunch of dirt on Yoolie, you escaped their “help” in time… your poor hat… and Yoolie. You can only spot Yoolie’s right hand on the dirt…

“There is a hot spring around here, you guys are disgusting.” You say. “Anyway, you have a break now, do whatever you want…”

“Yay!” UZ and OZ seem happy about it.

“I’ll take a bathe. No spying, okay? UZ come with me! And don’t worry! I’ll clean up your hat, Wilge” After you explaining them the location they leave.

“Ehm… I don’t know about UZ, since she’s a very nasty naïve girl, but I do use the old warm water on a towel trick to bath. To be quite honest, most of the Fist Magicians are disgusting fellows. I was one of the few keeping the whole thing together, yo.”

“I had to clean, make and buy food, help those who had nightmares like UZ, the goodies, you know?”

We have the Ice Wizards in there and up to no good!”

“Reihan is the definition of the end justifies the means! For all accounts he should be a bad guy, but maybe he’s just misguided… or guided right? I don’t know, he’s a glory hunter that’s for sure.”

“Is he really strong?”

“He’s like good bar brawler strong, I think you could kick his ass no problem in a normal mano a mano, but he plays dirty, like UZ Dirty, if you know what I’m saying!”

“Follow me and keep telling me about these weirdos, I need to setup some traps and get some food…”

Using your magic, you easily found food for lunch, since Yoolie seems to dislike the frozen rations you already have. You also make a tree turn its roots into magically clever snares for rabbits and other delicious animals.

“If you want to go head first to beat them their base is on the left side of the barricade they mounted. But remember, they play dirty, usually they run when they are not fighting on their terms”

“I saw that” You give some of the food to OZ to carry. You two go back to the House.

“Maybe we should go and beat them.”

“You’ll have to wait for the daily attack on town to take them if you want their shenanigans at their lowest, believe me, he’ll sacrifices his men for victory.”

You know when to strike now… I guess. Is this even a good idea?

First, I’m sorry. Second, I think you’re right, I’m abusing the use of dumb characters (because I like writing them), but I'm going to explain myself anyway for this quest, but if it goes beyond that I don’t think this is the place to talk about it (hit me on twatter or discord if you really give a shit about me rambling). It’s going to be somewhat spoiler-y for the rest of the quest so here goes (At least regarding The Fist Magicians):

UZ and OZ are 2 completely random grunts you took under your wing for no reason, they weren’t supposed join you (That’s why they got personalities the moment OZ joined you), and for that reason they are basically pretty simplistic characters:

UZ is a complete moron with no education that genuinely believes Reihan is a good guy because she doesn’t know better and is extremely naïve. He saw Reihan helping people in her town and thinks he’s a real hero, that’s good enough for her.

OZ, in other hand, is a smarter but lazy grunt who really doesn’t care about being good or bad, he just wanted a place to stay and have fun his way, the fact that Reihan wants to do “good” is plus for him to justify himself for his actions.

Now why they are so fucking stupid? They are grunts, if they were any bit smarter they wouldn’t be grunts for a dumbass leader that doesn’t care about them or being good, but the glory that comes with being a hero.

And that’s Reihan in a nutshell, a guy you could consider a good guy if you don’t have any morals or values, he is the guy who wants to score the winning goal and be celebrated for it, does he care that he cheated to score? Not a bit. Now why is Reihan so fixated with being a hero? That’s the fun of backstories and I’m not going to spoil it (even If I think it’s pretty dull of a reason).

Also, they are going to get smarter with time, they are one note characters that will get complex with more things happening to them.

I don’t have a low opinion of humanity and I don’t think I’m smart at all, average at best. I’m just a bad writer. But I’ll work to make this better and more enjoyable than being a shitty quest with quick doodles attached.

It’s time for the boys to cause some trouble!

You and your best apprentice leave the forest heading towards the weird town of Rashford. You’re in front of the barricade…

“Did you and UZ go through the hole?”

“Yes, UZ said it was easier than trespassing.”

“And you have beef with Reihan?”

“Yeah. We meet before around here.”

“We should hide, no point in going to town if we came here to kick asses.”

“I know a safer place to hide…”

You two go around the perimeter very close to the main gate, a big metal door is the main entrance and is guarded by a group of 5 Fist Magicians, the door and the wall that is attached to doesn’t seem part of the barricade as whole, they look much older. OZ guides you to some bushes, from your position you can see what is happening. A perfect hideout for the meantime. In case you get ambushed, you prepare a trap! You move some some spiky vines from the bushes under the snow…

“Why here?” You ask while preparing defense.

“It’s safer than standing near the wall, don’t you think?”

“But we’re closer to the main gate. This is dangerous.”

“Yes, and we will the first one to know when the attack commences. Their control tower is over there.” He points you to the left of the gate; you spot a small squalid tower… “A warehouse is under that tower. That’s the base.”

“So we go in when they go out?”

“Exactly. If we’re lucky enough, the townsfolk will counterattack early.”

You and OZ patiently in your position, the sun slowly starts to set, you estimate you have been for 3 hours.

“I have some fruit from early, here.” OZ hands you food.

As you began to eat you see a group of fist magicians preparing for attack. They are far more ordered than you expected, 4 lines of 10 of them go inside from the main gate.

“That’s like… almost all grunts in there.”

“I didn’t spot Reihan.”

“He has to be inside planning the whole thing.”

“And what’s he planning to do exactly?”

“No idea, I was just a grunt.”

“Maybe we should infiltrate.”

“The second wave of grunts should come out soon, there is a small possibility that he goes with them, but I wouldn’t bet on it. If we wait for it, he’s going to be almost unprotected.”

The time to strike is getting close.

“Let’s go.” No doubts in your mind.

You see the warehouse main gate slowly opening. A second group of Fist Magicians comes out with Reihan on top being carried in a… bad looking throne. There are 15 of them including Reihan. He spots you and OZ.

“Hold on insects! It seems we have some company!”

“Reihan, I came here to teach you a lesson.”

“Grass lover! I see you still have that bratty attitude of yours, my frie—”

“Take him down!” Reihan uses his troop as cannon folder.

As a group they all try to take you down, but they are too disorganized to move quickly, you start running away from them.

“Running already! I knew you were just a little punk!” Reihan is slowly walking towards your direction.

“Sorry Reihan, but you’re not following them!” OZ gets in his way; Your apprentice lifts his hands for a fighting pose! Go OZ!

You get to nearby trees and use their roots to trap some of them, 5 of them to be exact.

“What’s this?!” one of the poor grunts shrieks.

“True magic.” You respond.

“Then fuck this!” The rest runs away towards the base. You go after them.

“BOSS HE’S A MONSTER!” the closest grunt to Reihan yells, even he’s stepping backwards after seeing his men run.

“Q-QUIET YOU COWARD!” He grabs that poor Grunt and throws it like a projectile towards you… You easily evade him … “DAMMIT! SO CLOSE!”

“You all! Get in line! You’re my ammunition!” The other 9 grunts gulp and then follow Reihan’s command. His plan is to throw them at you to make time for him to get inside their base.

You slowly walk towards him menacingly…

“Who do you think you are?!” Reihan says as he throws more and more of his men.

You start catching them with roots you create from the soil, you’re very fortunate they tried to grow some trees because otherwise Phimi would be pissed. Every Fist magician is saved but at the same time trapped in your hands.

While your approach saved the poor cannon fodder of the pain, Reihan did escape and locked himself inside the warehouse. He’s trapped inside his own base, you take some time to check on OZ whole you bring some fruits and vegetables from nearby with your abilities. Is not as cool as you think, since you can’t make it appear out of nowhere, you made the trees that are holding them throw them in this direction, its raining food.

After checking on your pupil (who is going to be fine) you decided to confront your “hostages”. As you up your gaze and look at them, they shriek in fear and start crying for mercy.

“You saw it! He’s no hero! Attacking innocent townsfolk is not heroic! Throwing his men like pieces of trash is not heroic! Join me and you will never run out of food!” You take an apple that feel down before and raise it into the air. “Learn my magic and we will make a thriving community together!”

One of the scared grunts finds some courage and replies to you.

“With all due respect sir, we’re scared and we just want to run! If you defeat our boss we’ll think about it! And we won’t be a burden to you anymore… Please let us leave!”

“Take care of OZ and don’t go anywhere. I’ll bring that idiot with me.”

You let every Fist Magician free; most of them ran away without thinking it. But 6 of them stayed.

“Please don’t punish us for the actions of our fellow comrades, they were just scared.”

“Eh, relax, it was just an offer, just take care of OZ for now, I’ll bring down here that dumbass in a minute.”

The ones who are left nod. Well, time to get inside the warehouse…

You kick the door down and as you enter a big boulder tied to a rope tried to crush you! You evade it by jumping away.

“…Next time tell me if there is a trap!” You yell to the grunts.

“We didn’t know! Sorry!” their apologize seem sincere.

As you enter inside the base, you see Reihan sitting in the floor.

“DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! This cannot be the end! There must be a wa— SHIT, You’re inside!” He gets up. “Stupid worthless rock… I’ll guess that 1v1 is on! Time to stomp ya, bug...”

You can tell his confidence is fading; he did not raise his voice like before and his looking everywhere for an escape, there is a door behind him, but he doesn’t look thrilled about using it. This battle is basically over… or is it?

“YOU” He jumps to punch you… and connects! It’s not like you’re experienced in brawling, you ended up falling near the door. Reihan comes close to hit you again, but you use your magic and make a vine hold his arm.

“I’m not going to take away from you that, it really hurt. And me? Tricks? You were the one trying to flatten me with a boulder.” You say this as more vines start to appear and tie up Reihan outside. He’s under your complete control and doesn’t seem able to escape.

“You got a lucky punch.” You say as you touch your stomach. “Now tell me, why and how you started this hoax.”

“It’s not a hoax, my magic is real; I showed ya before!”

“Just spill the beans or I’ll make the vines tighter.”

“I’m a hero… I want to save Raforstead… My beautiful town… those Ice insects with their weird laws and corrupt government took us over and they played with us like we were… bugs! Those ungrateful bastards will know that all I did was for the greater good!” You feel an intense aura coming from him.

“Yes, that’s why I formed the Fist Magicians! We’re a rebel group that’s going to put those Chilly filthbags in their place! And their place is 10 feet under the soil; we the sons of the oppressed land will find their revenge, I will find my revenge!” by the expressions of their grunts it doesn’t seem like anyone but Reihan knew this.

“Its… not… foul… MAGIC!” You don’t know if it was strength of will or Fist magic, but he somehow broke the vines that were oppressing him. “It’s real! She taught me! I’m not going to let you or anyone tell me otherwise!”

He notices he escaped your prison and runs inside his base knowing full well you can’t do anything against him there. At least that’s what he thinks; you take the vines and put them around your hand. Now you can use them like some sort of whip… You go after him… he gets inside the door he didn’t want to enter before…

I am assuming his town was a different one from the one he has been harrassing? Surely we would have noticed ice insect overlords.
If he wants to talk again maybe we can try to point out that he is trying to do here exactly what they did to his town. Except that he is not as good at it as the ice insects are. And even if you do manage to save a town, like we are this one, no-one is going to cheer for you. There is just more work.

“BZZZZT!” The bees rally together in the form of a fist and follow Reihan.

“He’s in the control tower! Oh no! He fell inside the base!” A grunt tells you, you decided to follow Reihan and the bees, you hear a loud “THUMP”, that must have been that bastard hitting the floor hard. Behind the mysterious door there is a ladder, Reihan’s body and the bees. He’s still awake, and in pain.

“Aaah…” Reihan is defeated… What a disappointment of a battle.

“BZZT?” the bees say.

“Good job, I’ll take it from here.” You use the new set of vines to trap Reihan again.

“BZZT!” the bees fly away after a great work done.

“Aaah…” The bees were not merciful with him; his face is full of bees’ signatures. You hear the grunts coming to the room with the ladder.

“Boss!!” they seem worried.

“Don’t talk to me, you traitorous bunch of bugs…” He sounds very eloquent after what the bees did to him, you expected something funnier.

“B-but what about the attack? We were going to save the town! Today is the day!”

“The hell with the attack! I just got my ass handed to me…”

OZ finally wakes up; he was being drag by one of the grunts.

“Did you win?” he asks.

You start scoping out the place to see if it’d make a better home.

“I-I’ll answer for him! Don’t hurt us!” One of the grunts intervenes. “Ehem, we were trying to take down the Ice Magicians in town, the sub leader who’s controlling the town and the monster. You went there once, right? Did you see the monster?”

“A tall weird looking person, his extremities are long and he’s skinny, he wears a cape and a weird mask. The new mayor, put in that position by those invaders the ice magicians by the way, sacrifices the townsfolk for the monster to eat! At first it was criminals, but then…”

“Normal folks like us.” Another grunt says while looking down.

“It’s not like every Fist Magician came from Raforstead. I thought we were some kind of gang until a month ago when Reihan started the attacks, since I’ve been always part of the defending squad I never knew what was really happening.”

“That’s why we don’t like folks from Caicefield like you. You only were here for the food!” Maybe the reason he was with UZ because he was cast aside too.

“Can’t argue that.” OZ says disinterested.

“Okay OZ, that’s enough, go around and grab some food and clothes around here... or take anything of value. And you 5, stop the attack on the town, the Fist Magicians are over. I’ll hear more from you when you get back.”

“Roger that!” The grunts say.

“That won’t be necessary.” A weird white beam appears in front of you and lands in every fist magician in sight. They are frozen inside an enormous ice cube for each one… You look back and see a group of strange looking guys in dumb outfits, led by an effeminate skinny guy in dumb costume as well, he looks vaguely familiar…

“We are the mages of Caicefield and we have captured every rebel that tried to take down the town. Finally the mayor recurred to us to deal with… them. You two don’t seem to be with this scum… But I have to ask, why are you here?” The Skinny guy says to you and OZ. He looks somewhat important.

He’s still inside the room with the ladder, he felt unconscious after you started to explore the place. You look at OZ, who only shrugs; he doesn’t give a damn about Reihan…

“I’ve been better; Changin’ subject, I got some good stuff in there! I know you’re not a fan, but I got a pair of their ponchos. I’m sure they will sell great when they become part of pop culture.”

“I see… Anything really interesting?”

“I got some food… and this necklace.” It’s like the one you’re wearing… “Hey, it’s like the one you’re wearing!”

“Yeah… that’s weird… Where did you find it?” You take it from him.
