“Yui-chan is the boss of me, so she'll have to tell you.” Yui-chan looks exceedingly alarmed and you grin wickedly. “About that, I think I'd much rather be hit by more actual oni than demons, because, seriously, those things hit really hard.” Glancing down at your left arm, you can see it's been carefully bandaged and that there are cerulean stains on said bandages. “Though, I have been officially called a divine weapon, so I guess that's something?”

Yui-chan is still looking adorably alarmed at being the boss of you, but her lover is approaching her from behind so you don't worry too much. The conspicuous absence of anyone else in the room is terribly concerning. “Honestly, I'm going to be fine. I notice, however, no one has mentioned Inau-kun, who I am fairly certain was not fine, last I saw her. I would appreciate it if someone mentioned how she is....please?”

Akari-chan settles down behind Yui-chan and slips her arms about her lover's waist. “I was told very specifically to tell you to remain here and not to concern yourself with Inau-kun, who will make a full recovery in time, aniki.” Akari's matter of fact town alarms you a little more, actually, and you narrow your eyes at her. “I have also been told to allow you to try to get up, if you really think you might be able to.”

Yui-chan looks at your best friend with disbelief. Akari shrugs mildly, while Kiki-hime looks at you with worry.

“That's....an interesting bunch of things. Although, I should point out that you are talking with the person who sent the immortal Devils Gang home, you know.” Akari looks confused, and Kiki-hime's eyebrows rise significantly.

“How did you do that, aniki,” Yui-chan asks, walking right into your trap.

“I had tea with Enma-Oh in the Tenth Hell and discussed it calmly with him.”

While Kiki-hime looks impressed, and Akari actually seems surprised, you're quite certain that if Yui-chan had been near anything liquid you and Kiki-hime would be wearing it. “Aniki! You can't do that!” It's pretty telling that Yui-chan's exclamation is not one of disbelief, but of admonishment. And very encouraging.

“Why not? He seemed pretty reasonable to me.” You clutch the button that Kyubi-sama gave you. “He did mention I was in a very deep sleep, though....”

“You were in a coma, aniki,” explains a flustered and unhappy Yui-chan. “We didn't know of you would even come out of it.”

Kiki-hime squeezes your hand gently. She was pretty sure you would, without a doubt.

“Well....I still want to know how everyone is doing.” You glance at Kiki-hime, and then look at Yui and Akari. “The destruction of Princess Iron-Fan's weapon was more than a little unexpected.” You don't know how much she's been told, and while you did promise to tell the truth you really don't think you should be telling your wife you were the center of a magical tac-nuke.

“Everyone is fine, Ryu-chan, even Inau-kun,” Kiki-hime murmurs softly. She rests her other hand on top of yours. “You were the one everyone else was worried about, even Inau-kun. You....” She takes a deep breath, centering herself and keeping her tears from forming. When she opens them again they are soft and bright, and just a little wet. “when Er Yin-sensei carried you in, you were ice cold and not really breathing. It took Yui-chan several minutes to find a heartbeat.”

“Four, aniki,” supplies Akari-chan helpfully. A chill runs down your spine.

Kiki-hime nods and continues. “Only you and Inau-kun were really badly hurt. Yuuhi-chan was a little shaken, but she was all right.”

“Guarding the door,” murmurs Akari-chan before you ask the inevitable question.

“My sister and her Master,” Kiki-chan says without a trace of blush, “purified the yard and gave last rites to Melinda-san. The demon glass was all gathered up and is in sacred barrels being purified as well.” The landlady didn't get involved at least. You have no idea what he might have done if she'd been upset. “You really did get the demons sent home?”

“Most of them – the ones after me anyways and a lot of little ones. Any others we find are here on their own.” You keep your suspicions about Taisho Ryoga to yourself for the moment. “At least I woke up to my family this time. It's much nicer than waking up – not-waking-up? – in Hell.” Your loved ones relax a little – even Yui-chan, who is just a little flustered still. You're not sure if it is by your temerity or your aplomb.

“....that aside,” you murmur carefully lifting Kiki-hime's hand up and over to your lips for a kiss that makes her blush happily, “I am wondering exactly how bad my injuries are to make Akari-niji-chan challenge me to get up. Because I'm not feeling any of them at the moment, and I really should be.” Your awareness of your injuries has saved your life many times, and it is weird to be injured and not feeling it.

“Aniki....your body is injured, but it wasn't as badly damaged as your spirit was.” Yui lifts her hand and slowly runs it along your centerline, above your covers. You can see the faint glow of your aura interacting with whatever she seems to be doing, and there are definitely places that are glowing more and less brightly rather than an even, smooth sort of aura. “Fighting that demon wasn't as bad as whatever the ruyi did to you. You're getting better now that you are awake, but you probably shouldn't use it for at least a week. Maybe longer.”

“I won't be using it again, Yui-niji-chan. I told you, the demons and Enma-Oh are gone; I don't even need it.” You frown slightly, as Yui returns her hands to her thighs while Akari rests her chin on the taller girl's shoulder and traces kanji on her firm belly. “Though you might want to tell Yuuhi-chan that we're expecting a visitor.”

“I shall take care of it, aniki,” murmurs Akari, who slips away from Yui to nearly kowtow next to your head. That, of course, is so she can kiss you. “Good morning, aniki,” she murmurs and you relax quite a bit. Kiki-hime smiles warmly at Akari as she walks across the bed to the door.

“It's really too bad that I missed the past couple of days,” you murmur, much to Kiki-hime's amusement and a softly glowing Yui-chan's embarrassment. “Yui-chan....can we move Inau-kun into here? Or is she really that badly off?”

Yui-chan considers your question very seriously, but finally shakes her head. “Her condition is bad, but not serious. Yours is dangerous; I don't think anyone ill should be in the room with you until your spirit is better, aniki.” When you look at her in confusion, she looks abashed. “Right now you are in a very Yin state of health. Your spirit is trying to rebuild itself, and that could have a bad effect on other sick people. Healthy people are fine though. A sick person couldn't protect themselves against your spirit's need.”

“So I'm like a psychic vampire?”

Yui shakes her head. “More like the cold spot around melting ice. It thaws around warm thing, and makes cold things colder.”

Nodding slowly, you glance at her with a smile. “So healthy people will help me get healthier?”

“You shouldn't be thinking those things just now, aniki!” she says in alarm.

You look at Kiki-hime as Akari slips back into the room. “Yui-niji-chan sure is bossy nowadays. Have you been teaching her how to be an S-pe?”

“Ryu-chan!” Kiki-chan's mock outrage makes everyone except the extremely blushing Yui-chan smile. “As a matter of fact I have not! And I will have you know we were all waiting patiently for you to get better!” You smile, though she's being perfectly honest; you suspect....no, you're positive they were all too worried, and not just about you. But their smiles and warmth are reassuring, which is the important thing.

Akari kneels next you Yui, and mirrors her lover's pose, sitting seizen and holding her thighs. “Kiku-chan wants to know if you think you can keep some soup down, aniki.” You glance at Yui-chan who nods cautiously.

“The bossy one says I may try it,” you say with an air of faux dignity, making her turn even darker, and her tail lashes rapidly, before Akari's catches it. Yui-chan sits bolt upright, her body quivering. “Oh, that's new....”

Akari rises slowly, and pulls Yui-chan gently to her feet. “My tail-tip compacts better than yours does, aniki.” Yui-chan's blood pressure spikes much higher than Inau-kun's can!

You let the heat bloom in your cheeks, because that's something....well, something really different. You hadn't actually thought of using your tail in quite that way, though you've definitely employed it in many others! You look up at your wife suspiciously, but she is sitting up primly, eyes closed and looking quite impervious.

“I would have nothing to do with such things, Ryuu Ryukusa, as you well know!” Her tail gives away the humor she's hiding pretty well, though; an angry or annoyed dragonette tail doesn't sway in so many directions, by an amused dragonette's does just that.

Yui-chan turns and walks backwards, while Akari gives her an indulgent, sweet little smile that you would kill to protect....um. Have killed to protect. “Stay in bed- Eh?” Yui-niji-chan catches the button you throw to her and blinks at it, her eyes going wide. Akari actually has to stop, and looks at the button curiously as well.

“Only Yuuhi-chan or I can do anything with it, but Yuuhi-chan might be able to help Inau-kun with it.” Yui-chan's eyes grow wide and she swallows nervously, before bowing deeply. “Hey now, none of that! Shoo.” She grins and grabs Akari by the hand, and the startled look on your best friend's face is worth it as she gets forcibly dragged from the bedroom by her lover.

Looking up at Kiki-hime, you smile, the heat slow to fade from your cheeks. She's smiling down at you, relaxed again, though her tail is still swirling a bit. “I really miss out on stuff when I'm asleep nowadays. It's lucky that I don't have to do it as much anymore.” You kiss her hand and gently draw her closer, and she relents, finally, and slips under the covers with you to snuggle against your right side. The movement of the blankets gives your left arm a twinge, and the twinge becomes a flare of bone deep-ache that is slow to fade.

The tightening of your body – which tells you how out of it you really are, because you can't suppress it at all – gives your wife pause. When you finally relax, she gently wipes the sweat from your brow with a delicate hand, making you blush. Kiki caresses your horn gently, and you sigh softly, relaxing further with her warm body pressed along yours, even through the robes you both wear. “Please be a little more careful, Ryu-chan. We can't do this without you, you know.”

She smiles and rests her head on your shoulder and lightly traces a heart against the side of your breast. “I know; you have mentioned why before....I just want you to be just a little more careful, not a lot more....”

Wrapping your arm about her, your hand comes to rest on her hip as she spoons herself along your side. You can feel the trio of scales there, undoubtedly pink and delicate looking. “As careful as I can be, I will be. Our enemies sometimes pull strange tricks out of their many hats. A magic fan belonging to a goddess, strange abominations from mysterious laboratories, and demigods armed with ancient weapons....it's a difficult thing.”

A soft kiss against your cheek and you turn to nuzzle against her softly, keeping your left arm still. She nuzzles back and you let out a soft, slow hiss of pleasure, which makes her giggle. “What?”

“You sound like the waves running back down the beach, leaving the sand wet,” she murmurs affectionately, as you slowly blush. “It's lovely,” she amends, despite her smile.

“I prefer your sister purring and you warbling,” you note, tucking your nose against her neck and giving her a tiny lick. Salt and sweet. She had been crying, but some time ago.

“I do not....oh, yes, I suppose I do....” she admits reluctantly at your credulous look.

“I know how much you all suffer when I am hurt. I don't like that. I love the attention and the love, but I hate that it hurts all of you so.” She gives you an odd look. “I'm affection starved, Kiki-hime, of course I love to be pampered.”

“It's....a little strange to hear you admit that so easily, even as much as you seem to hate being in bed.” Her finger traces a star on your cheek. “You don't have to be sick for that kind of treatment, you know.”

“I know. But I'm being honest....so.” You rub her horn with yours and she shivers delightfully. “I still don't want you all to suffer through my recoveries. So I will be as careful as I can be, for all of your sakes.”

“It is everything I ask, Ryu-chan.”

“Surely not everything,” you murmur into her ear, making her squirm. The blankets pull and you get a very intense reminder of why Yui-chan cautioned you.

“Everything for now,” she amends gently, placing her head against your shoulder as the door opens – or rather, after the spasm passes. The door opens after that.

Kiku-chan pauses, looking at you both, and then proceeds to walk around the bed once she determines you're only cuddling. “Now who is a hentai dragon,” you murmur. Her tail twitches at your accusation, catlike on it's swiftness.

“I have a safe-word, aniki, and I know how to use it,” she responds tartly. You can't help but grin at her and she glares at you as she steps onto the platform that rings the bed, and then down onto the bench. She sits on the edge of said bench and sets a tray down with a bowl of something hot and sour, and a large ceramic mug you recognize instantly. She ignores your distasteful look, however. “You will have to get up, Kiki. She needs to be sitting up for this.”

Kiki-hime sits up and sighs, and then moves the blanket aside for you. “you start to get up and then discover exactly what Er Yin meant by 'if you could'.

Your left arm feels like lead, and moving it is agony second only to platypus venom. Every shift of muscle and skin grinds through your nerves like glass and sandpaper. It takes a lot more effort not to make any pain noises than you've had to muster in a very long time. By the time you are upright you are drenched with sweat, and you spare a touch of power to clean yourself off and cool your body down.

Kiki-hime is looking at you with sympathy, and it's clear she would help if she could. Kiku-chan is impassive and calm, merely watching you with those huge golden eyes of hers. You sit there and pant softly for the moment. Kiki-hime startsto ask if you are okay, but you interrupt her. She doesn't get angry about that, and her understanding look is enough vindication.

You really didn't want to lie to her.

“How is Rie-sama?”

Kiku-chan suppresses a shudder. “The nekomata....she's been cursed, in a way. She is no longer a youkai. Or a kami.”

You turn and look at your diminutive priestess. “Excuse me?”

“She's human. Well, as human as we are. She's....she's a spirit child.” You stomach does a slow turn. “I do not see any way that can be fixed,” she says slowly, looking into your eyes as she hands you the ceramic mug of medicinal tea. Kiku-chan looks down, and takes a deep breath. “I am truly sorry, Ryukusa-sama....”

Not just the how, though that's kind of interesting, but also -why-. Like that certainly doesn't seem an easy thing to do, and I'm not sure what purpose there is in doing so. Surely there are less esoteric means of causing pain, if that was their objective.

I kind of feel like the Devils that did that to Rie were already slain by Ryukusa's hand, and even if it were possible to undo, it'd have a very very high price. Unless she's thinking something completely different.

You take the mug carefully – and every movement threatens to send your left arm into paroxysms (there's a word you have never had reason to use before) of utter agony so you are very careful. Drinking the awful medicinals keeps you from needing to do anything other than think, and it is plenty of time.

The idea of a kami or youkai becoming human isn't exactly new, per se. There are many gods and spirits which became temporarily human. Except the problem is, it is invariably a curse, accident, or tragedy that does it, and the kami or youkai in question suffers terribly for the curse of humanity before being restored to its rightful place.

How much of those tales are true, you're not really certain. Sure, you met someone who might be Susano-Oh's daughter, and you've met a crane-spirit child, but that's a little different from the legends, isn't it? You choke down the last of the intensely bitter brew and take a deep breath, letting it out slowly.

“....Ryu-chan?” asks Kiki-hime softly, reminding you that you're not alone.

“Sorry, I'm just trying to....I don't know what I'm trying to do. I mean....this is....” You shake your head and look at Kiku-chan. “This isn't your fault. I know how much she scares you, and I know you would do anything to fix this, despite that.” She looks up at you, relief shimmering in those hard metal eyes that hide a tender heart. You start to reach for her but your left arm decides that no, you won't be doing that at all.

Kiku-chan carefully slides off the side board of your bed and goes to her knees next you you, which puts her far lower than head height to you. You embrace her one armed, carefully, reminiscent of a similar situation. She holds your waist with tiny hands, her head lowered. You have to be kind of careful when you kiss the top of her head. The delicate priestess sighs and relaxes against you, while your wife looks at you curiously.

“What does Ryiekatsumoun think about this?” you ask tentatively.

Kiki-hime mouths the name slowly as you tiny priestess sighs against you. “She doesn't seem to realize anything has changed yet. She hasn't tried to transform, though....or leave, because....Master put wards around the room. They're pretty obvious, but she doesn't seem to....to....”

“Get it?” suggests Kiki-hime, and Kiku-chan nods. You grimace and she lets go, sinking to sit seiza next to you while you try and relax your left shoulder.

“She's mortal, Ryukusa. Pure, flesh and blood, beating heart and all. She's almost entirely human.”

Your stomach does that slow turn again. “As in not even spirit-child?”

“If you are a spirit-child turned into a demigod, then Rie-sama is on the opposite end of your scale.” Before you can form the question your priestess sighs in exasperation. Which makes you feel a little better, actually. “The curse makes her flesh and blood and mortal, so that youkai could eat her and gain sustenance from her. She has enough Shen to see into the real world, but nothing more than that. Her God's Eyes are closed, perhaps forever, baka dragon.”

She stands up and fetches the soup from the board and offers it to Kiki-hime. “Make sure she eats all of this. It's a spell to help her get better.” Kiku turns to leave, but then pauses, and turns back to you, and looks into your eyes for a long moment. You look back, and smile, showing her the love and faith you have in her. She bows, and then carefully clambers out of the bed, and you watch her go, wondering what you will do next....

Kiki-hime looks at you and murmurs softly after the door shuts behind your sister. “Ryu-chan....how bad is this?”

You glance at her. “You are a spirit child, Kiki-hime, a person who interacts with the spirit world and the human world.” You smooth the blankets absently. “Rie was purely of the spirit world. She's never interacted with humans except to scare them or eat them.” You look up at her and then speak very softly, very slowly. “She's now one of those things she used to eat and scare, Kiki-hime. And she doesn't know it yet.”

I'm not sure how directly Ryukusa is supposed to be responsible for this.

I mean, it happened because Rie showed up uninvited and proposed a third option to the youkai Ryukusa was giving a binary choice, taking the youkai into an unprotected trip, and because Ryukusa's enemies decided to target said youkai for a scheme of their/for getting off on hurting people.

I mean, it's not very direct, as connection, not that I'm shifting the blame or refusing to acknowledge our involvement

I have to say, her showing up like that, for reason, to do ...something with Melinda never sat well with me, both from a narrative and a in-setting standpoint. Not to mention it really felt to me she was going "I'm a mysterious youkai and I'm intervening now, so you better let me" at the time.

And then it turns out everyone came out of it worse than they would have otherwise.

So, was Rie somehow punished for "playing god" before she actually ascended to Kami-hood?

Not that I'm trying to say it's her fault, but it seems weird to me.

Not really, because that would require her to have an outlook far more fundamentally human than she has ever had. The concept of her mindset and point of view changing was literally impossible for her to imagine, because she has never been anything but what she was, in her mind.

A youkai's outlook is inherently self centered. They can't conceive of being destroyed, not because they are that arrogant (and it is always mistaken as arrogance by humans who deal with them) but because the concept of their nonexistence is impossible for them to fathom.

Animals are sentient but not sapient. Youkai are effectively sapient, with little to no sentience.

As a collorary to that statement, think of this: every time a youkai in an anime says "so you're the one who thinks they can destroy me" or "you cannot destroy me", isn't saying such a thing because they think you are weak or can't actyally harm them. It because people in the past have always claimed to be able to or about to destroy them, and they see the previous failures and recognize that this strange idea of destrucxtion that gets applied to them means SOIMETHING, and that it is a goal humans try and achieve regarding them....but they literally do not understand exactly what 'destruvtion' entails or what it means for them. There really isn't that much that can harm a youkai. They don't generally have predators, they don't really have any natural causes of death, and they can sense places of purity and righteousness and will seek out/avoid those things as their nature dictates. Their very essential nature of being youkai is essentially a sort of 'instinct' in that it informs every action and activity they take. For isntance, Rie was catlike because she was a cat youkai, and everything she did was based on being a cat youkai - even getting Ryukusa healed was a side effect of being treated like a guardian spirit and being made offerings to. "They give me treats, I must repay the treats with good things." Their nature serves as a sort of 'instinct'.
