Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“How are you holding up?”

“Fine,” Kiriko answers you as she lays back in her bed in the nurse's infirmary... a room that is rather packed after the events of your last mission. “I mean... at least I got a few good hits on that demon, right? Not a bad day, if you ask me!”

You turn your head to Mayu, who has been sitting in a chair next to Kiriko's bed since you've arrived. “So, how long have you been here?”

“Only a few hours,” Mayu explains to your surprise. You expected her not to have moved from Kiriko's side since yesterday. “I left for the library this morning in order to pick up a book for Kiriko... but when I asked for a book that Kiriko would appreciate, the librarian simply handed me a pamphlet entitled 'coping with death'.”

“Yeah...” Kiriko giggles, flicking through the pamphlet. “Kaiya also scribbled out all the actual advice and just wrote 'embrace it' over and over again.”

“I wished to be by Kiriko's side by the time she awoke,” Mayu explains. “So I didn't have time to pick up an alternative book.”

“Yeah, so if you can grab something from the library today it'll be much appreciated,” Kiriko smiles. “I think they have a manga section, grab something cool from there.”

“I'll see what I can do,” you reply. You turn your head to see Roka, who is fast asleep and covered in bandages the next bed over. “How's he holding up?”

“Ugh, his snoring sounds like a whale,” Kiriko rolls her eyes. “He's so dang annoying... still, he's recovering. I really should do something nice for the guy, considering he saved my life. I just don't know what I could do for him without him driving me crazy over it...”

You let out a yawn. “Whatever you do, don't take him to dinner. The oaf might get some bad ideas.”

Kiriko looks over to Roka, before nodding. “Right... don't want to give him mixed messages, do I? I already crushed him by turning him down yesterday... don't want to give him any more hope, do I?”

You walk over to the other side of the room, where you see Gado being tended to by Amaya. Kuin is sitting in the chair next to him wearing a cast over her arm, while Anri is standing by the edge of the bed.

“Kuin, I still can't say I understand,” Anri remarks. “I don't remember you ever injuring your arm.”

“That's because I'm not injured!” Kuin explains. “I'm just faking an injury so as not to be separated from my bodyguard! A great dictator always thinks three steps ahead!”

“You know, you wouldn't be in this position if you didn't act so brutish,” Amaya lectures him. “Rushing into danger, throwing yourself into harm's way...”

“But you do get worried about me, right?” Gado smirks. “I'd say that's a win in my book, Blondie.”

Amaya blushes. “T-that's besides the point...”

“Please do get better,” Anri smiles as she places her hand on Gado's arm. “I was hoping that tonight we could...”

“Do something you're hesitating to say out loud in front of Blondie?” Gado smirks. “Don't worry, Brainiac. I'll be in condition to spend the night with you in no time, just wait.”

Amaya shakes her head and looks away as Anri bids her boyfriend farewell, before approaching you. “Hello, Kazuma.”

“What, no kiss for Gado?” you ask.

“I would prefer he and I kept public displays of affection to a minimum,” she explains. “I do have an air of professionalism to uphold.”

“I really doubt that,” you reply. “Also... have you seen Io? She should be resting up in here, and I was meaning to pay her a visit...”

Anri thinks for a moment. “I believe I passed by her in the hallway on my way here. She was wearing crutches and speeding down the hallway. Seemed she was determined to be somewhere and wasn't going to let her injury stop her.”

You sigh. “Whatever... so, what's new with you.”

Anri places her hand on your arm. “I think I've discovered a new lead in the Yasunari murder case.”

“Oh boy...” you sigh. “You know I still don't believe it was murder. Even if it was, isn't it safe to assume Tsuki did it? You know, the undercover Archdemon who is made of pure evil?”

“I will never assume,” Anri shakes her head. “My mind is open to all possibilities, and all potential killers.”

“Yeah, I know,” you recall. “You were certainly quick to accuse me of killing the guy.”

Anri shakes her head. “Kazuma, I'm very sorry for that. Now, you're one of my closest friends... so much so that you're the only one I can trust with this information.”

“What information?” you ask.

Anri pauses. “I was assisting Takeshi with his janitorial duties earlier in the week, when he allowed me to see the backlog of abandoned items he had found. One of which was a journal with Yasunari's name on it.”

“Cool, so you can read that and figure out if there's any clues from what he wrote in it?” you ask. “You'll be able to put this whole murder thing to rest.”

Anri nods. “Possibly, yes. All lost&found items are sent to a storeroom within Principal Wei's office. I'll need to convince Wei to give me that journal without bringing up the murder case. I would like it if you would assist me in this matter.”

"That is true..." Anri places a finger to her chin.

You raise an eyebrow. "Wow, thanks for the support. You really are a true friend."

Anri shakes her head. "Sorry if that came across as rude. I was just acknowledging that... well, when it comes to situations that involve you talking, you skills in persuasion are... very lacking. Suffice it to say, you may not be the best at performing this kind of task."

"Then why did you even ask me for my help?" you ask, confused.

"I was hoping that you could provide moral support," Anri replies. "We are friends, after all. Still, your comment leads me to believe that I would be better off convincing Principal Wei on my own."

"Do you have any experience in lying to people?" you ask.

"Plenty," Anri replies almost immediately. "I should get moving, Kaz. Have a nice day, and I'll meet with you again once I've retrieved the journal."

You stretch out, before reaching into your pocket to pull out your phone. A new message.

>From: Mayu
>Kazuma, I would like to inform you that I have decided to postpone my confession towards Kiriko. After the business with Roka Abe yesterday, I feel it would be unfair on Kiriko's emotions to reveal my feelings to her so soon. This decision hurts me, but I feel it is for the best. I would also like to thank you, Kazuma. I appreciate that you are here to listen to my thoughts and fears. Yours truly, Mayu Nakatoni.

For some reason, you were hoping that Mayu would close out her texts with smiley emoticons like Io. On that note... you should probably look for Io, considering she seems to be doing something important when she should be recovering. Perhaps she's in class, which is starting in a few moments despite half the class being in the infirmary. You should also try to grab Kiriko and the other's something to read while they're resting up too...

Going to class would be a real waste of time considering how few will even be attending. Granted, you're sure that Mr. Kudawa would be adamant on studying with exams coming up, but you're really not going to bother with that. Instead, you're going to go grab a book from the library for each of your friends... of course, doing so involves having to come across... her. Never a pleasant occasion.

You make your way to the library to find it... completely empty. Kaiya isn't even sitting at the front desk, and there aren't any signs of her anywhere. It would have at least been nice to get some actual service here, but it's a relief that you don't have to deal with the creepiest person you've ever met.

You begin to wander through the library, searching for books that your friends could enjoy. Let's see... oh, a copy of the Red Mask manga! Kiriko could enjoy that... there's also some action mystery that you're sure Gado will get a kick out of. A fantastical kids book for Kuin, and book about an underdog sporting team for Ukon, and for Io... hmm, there's a book on marketing and a romance novel, you're not sure which she'd enjoy more. You decide to just borrow both anyway, it's not like it'll cost you anything extra.

As you pick up the last book, ready to check them all out, you hear a sudden noise behind you. From the rafters above you, comes a figure, swooping down from above. You spin around, and are shocked to see Kaiya dropping in on you from a rope. No, not a rope... a noose. Thankfully, this creepiness wasn't capped of by her head being through it, but as she leaps to the ground and stares at you, you almost fall flat on your ass in shock.

"Kaiya?! What the hell?!" You cry out. "Why do you have a noose?"

"As decoration," Kaiya explains, before taking a good, long look at you. "You have it."

"I have what?" you ask.

Kaiya approaches closer, backing you into a corner as she begins to sniff the air around you, her face inches from yours. "The stench of death... it's all over you. I like it..."

Kaiya begins to breathe more heavily as she continues to sniff around you.

"Is this making you... excited?" you ask.

"Yes," Kaiya answers bluntly. "Very. You saw them, didn't you? You witness what they could do?"

She must be talking about Tsuki and Taiyo... "Yeah, I did."

"What were they like?" Kaiya asks, gripping onto your shoulders so you can't move out of the corner you're in. "Tell me."

Kaiya lets out a wicked laugh, her breath in your face reeking of meat. "So much overconfidence... it explains the smell of death surrounding you... oozing out of every pore..."

Kaiya leans in closer to you, and in a disgusting display... licks your face. You may want to wash yourself off when this is all through. Her tongue starts to move from just below your right cheek and she doesn't pull away until she reaches your hair. She pulls back and you wipe your face in disgust as she smiles at you with the creepy eyes.

"Delicious."

"What's wrong with you?" you sigh. "You can't just do that to people!"

Kaiya continues to smile as she outstretches her hand. "Books."

Oh yeah... she's still the librarian. You hand the books over to Kaiya who checks them out at the front desk. She hands them back to you, before grabbing a beef bowl from her desk and munching away at it.

With a raised eyebrow, he leave Kaiya to her business, before making your way back to the nurse's office in order to deliver the books to your friends. Io is still missing, but you just leave the books by the bed that's supposed to belong to her. Delivering the manga to Kiriko, her face lights up and she laughs. "Red Mask... very funny. Oh, this chapter has that bug villain in it! I always liked her!"

"Good, have fun," you reply.

"Oh... it's got Pink Mask," Kiriko sighed. "Lamest sidekick ever."

You look over to the still sleeping Roka and laugh to yourself. Your phone buzzes as you step out of the hallway.

>From: Risa
>Hey Kaz, me and Tami are visiting Ninsei's garden! Wanna come help out?

You place your phone into your pocket and let out a sigh. Risa really is adamant in her attempts to make up for her father's actions with the always frumpy Ninsei. She likely wants you to come along just so that she has someone else to handle Ninsei's temper.

You make your way out to the courtyard, searching for a while until you come across the clearing of trees that leads into Ninsei's private garden. You don't know for sure why you're bothering to visit. Maybe it's because Risa has already done so much for you that you can't help but try to support her whenever you can. Still, you still aren't looking forward to having to listen to Ninsei being moody and yelling at everyone around him.

"Careful with the stems, Ninsei!" you hear Tami calling out.

When you arrive, you get a good glimpse of Tami on all fours pulling a few of the vegetables from the ground by Ninsei's side. Risa is hunkered down herself, looking on with a smile. You approach Risa and hunker down in turn. "What's going on here? I expected Ninsei to be trying to chase you off."

"He was," Risa whispers back. "But then Tami started talking about his plants, and it turns out the girl has a knack for farming. Should have figured, she's super into nature and survival, should have figured she'd have some knowledge. Either way, Ninsei's too distracted by gardening to even get mad."

"Huh..." you mutter. "Never thought I'd see a Ninsei that wasn't pissed off at everything around him."

"Yeah..." Risa replies, clutching the boxed lunch in her hand. "Still, I don't think it'll last when I start talking to him again."

"At least he's in a better mood," you reply. "Maybe you can get through to him this time?"

"Huh..." Ninsei mutters. "You know Tami... you're not as stupid and incompetent as everyone else."

"Aw, how flattering!" Tami replies. "You know what you should plant sometime. Some nice yams!"

"Ugh, disgusting," Ninsei replies.

Tami gives him a light push. "Oh come on, yams are nice!"

Ninsei raises an eyebrow. "In what dimension?"

Tami pouts and giggles. "Well... I like them. Maybe you should sacrifice one of your four carrot patches for some variety?"

"I like carrots," Ninsei grumbles as he takes a swig from his milk bottle.

"They're getting along," Risa points out. "Better than I thought they would."

"Sounds like they're arguing to me," you reply.

"Yeah, but he's not insulting her," Risa smiles. "That's the important part. They're practically buddies now!"

As Tami and Ninsei continue to debate vegetables, Risa looks down at the boxed lunch. "Man, I'd hate to interrupt their conversation..."

Risa smiles a little as she takes a step back and turns to you. "He accepted it. That's progress, isn't it?"

"You've got a positive way of looking at things," you smirk, as Ninsei rises to his feet and dusts himself off.

"Now, I need to get to work, so can you idiots stop crowding around me?" he asks. "Seriously, you'd think I was a damn circus attraction or something."

Tami picks herself up and gives a pat on Ninsei's shoulder, almost causing him to spill his milk. "Sure thing! We should really do this again sometime! Ooh, we could go into town tomorrow and pick up some seeds."

"No yams," Ninsei replies.

"So that's a yes?" Tami smiles.

"Maybe."

Tami skips to join you and Risa as the three of you walk back to the courtyard.

"He's kinda nice," Tami states. "I can see what you mean when you guys call him a grump, but I think there's a pretty cool guy underneath it all."

"I think so too," Risa replies. "The problem is getting him to forgive me for what my father did to him..."

"Leave it to me!" Tami gives a military salute. "When I'm through with him, he'll be the most social man in the entire academy!"

Risa and Tami walk off to class as the bell rings, leaving you to ponder what to do next.

>Look for Io.

Io's been wandering around somewhere when she should really be resting along with the others. You can't help but be worried about her, no matter how determined she looked when Anri saw her. You decide to check out the dorms first, in the hopes that Io was just grabbing something from her room before coming back to the nurse's office.

Arriving at the dorms, of course, you bear witness to something you really didn't want to see. Io at what appears to be a marketing stall, sitting in a chair with crutches by her side, and a stack of yen in her hands. As she counts the money with a frown on her face, she lets out a forlorn sigh. As she turns her head, she catches a glimpse of you, and shifts immediately into a warm smile as she beckons you over.

"Hey Kaz, check it out!" she smiles. "You'll be glad to know that business was booming at first break! And I've projected profits to triple during lunch!"

"Io, what is this?" you ask.

Io smirk. "What does it look like? My stall has returned with a vengeance, and boy were people happy to see me! I made more sales today than I did any other break! I think it's a mix of people knowing me better, the stall being gone for a while, and of course the crutches garnering a lot of sympathy buys."

"Io, you're injured," you sigh. "You really skipped out of the nurse's office to sell some of your wares? Couldn't that wait until you were just a little recovered?"

"Time waits for no woman," Io winks. "And you know what they say about time being money! People need their products, Kaz. Just now, Atasuke came to me desperate, hoping I had any of his favourite perfume in stock! If I wasn't running my stall, he'd be sad all day! Is that what you want, Kaz?"

"You're dodging the question," you ask.

Io giggles. "No silly, I'm answering it. This is what I do, Kaz. This is what I enjoy doing, and people find my services helpful. Everyone wins... besides, I'm not that hurt. It's just a leg injury, it's hardly enough to stop me from shifting some goods, right?"

>You sound like you're in a rush. Why?

Io raises an eyebrow. "A rush? Kaz, I think you're imagining things. I'm just busy with business. Plus, I don't want to be holed up in that depressing nurse's office all day... I wanted to get up and do something useful."

"You need your rest," you reply. "I was worried about you when you weren't there this morning."

"You were?" Io asks. "Well... of course you were, I expect you to be worried about your friends."

"Exactly," you sigh. "Promise me you'll get back there soon? I left some books by your bed to read."

"Oh really?" Io smiles. "What books?"

You pause. "Well, one's called 'Twelve Small Steps to Make Big Business'..."

"And the other?" Io asks.

You sigh. "The Lusty Innkeeper: A tale of sordid romance."

Io giggles. "Oh, my favourite. Thank you, Kaz."

"No problem," you laugh back. "Anything for a friend, right? Just... promise me you'll get some rest soon, okay?"

"Promise," Io smiles. "And Kaz..."

Io looks up at you as she places a strand of hair behind her ear. "I'm sorry."

"Sorry for what?"

Io pauses. "I'm sorry, Kaz."

"Okay..." you mutter, confused, as you make your way back to the school building.

You wander through the corridor, before being touched on the shoulder by someone behind you. You turn in surprise to see Atasuke grinning before you.

"Oh, calm down Kazuma!" he chuckles. "It's only myself!"

"Oh... sorry," you mutter. "Maybe you should try... you know... not sneaking up on me?"

Atasuke laughs. "Oh, my sincerest apologies! I just couldn't help but notice you having a most delightful conversation with the most wondrous Io Tanaka!"

"Yes, and?"

"You cannot fool me, Kazuma!" Atasuke wags his fingers. "A handsome man like you, a gorgeous woman such as her, surely the two of you are on the cusp of a steamy and thrilling romance."

"I can assure you we're not," you sigh. Damn, this guy assumes this with everyone, doesn't he?

Atasuke eyes you up. "Ah, but I can tell where a man's gaze lies. You may not be coiling yourself around miss Tanaka under the covers just yet, but you have given it thought, yes?"

"Not really," you reply. "I don't put much thought to that stuff."

"You expect me to believe that?" Atasuke smirks. "A healthy young male such as yourself? You wish to embrace her in the throes of passion, don't you?"

>Me and Io are just friends, nothing more.

Atasuke pouts. "Aw, that's no fun at all!"

"Sorry to disappoint you," you reply.

Sure, Io's an attractive girl, and the two of you are close friends, but that's where it ends. You've never seen Io as anything more than that. Your relationship with her is completely platonic... the big question for you is whether or not Io sees it that way. After all, she's constantly flirting with you and expressed interest in the romantic... and of course there was yesterday, when she admitted to trying to kiss you... but that was the heat of the moment. Io herself said that the two of you were better off as friends, and you're one to agree with her. You just hope you don't have to coldly turn her down in the future because of this.

"Still... the two of you would make a very attractive couple," Atasuke smirks devilishly. "Then again... you would make an attractive couple with most."

Atasuke grins with lewd thoughts on his mind, as you have no choice but to let out a sigh. "Yeah, yeah... whatever. Look, I told you I'm not interested in that stuff right now. "

"Mark my words, Kazuma!" Atasuke dramatically declares. "One day you will know the pleasures of an intimate romance!"

"Maybe," you reply as you walk away. "But not now."

You make your way through the halls before you check your phone to see you've received a new message.

>Meet with Chuichi

Hanging out on the roof sure beats attending an almost empty classroom. You make your way up the steps and out onto the rooftop, to see Chuichi lying back, his hands behind his head, looking up at the sky.

"Taking it easy, I see..." you call out, grabbing his attention as you approach him.

"Yep," Chuichi smiles, sitting up. "I mean, what else can you do after a day like yesterday. I'm just happy not to be stuck in the nurse's office like the others."

"Me too," you reply. "That mission was a disaster... we all got messed up. I... never thought we would be that outclassed... and not even by Tsuki. By his demidemon daughter."

"So, do you think we're screwed?" Chuichi asks. "I mean... Tsuki seems like the world domination type. What's stopping him from taking over tomorrow?"

"Nothing," you sigh. "We just gotta hope for the best."

Chuichi nods. "Hope... man, we could use a lot more of that, couldn't we?"

You chuckle. "Yeah, we're pretty lacking right now."

"Oh well," Chuichi smirks. "Today's not all about doom and gloom. Today's about recovery. Rebuilding, you know? So let's talk about something else. You know who's been on my mind lately?"

"Mayu?" you ask.

Chuichi chuckles. "Nah, I've given up on Mayu. I don't think me and her were meant to be. And besides, I think her interests lie elsewhere... no, I was just thinking about your dad."

"My dad?" you ask.

Chuichi nods. "Yeah. The greatest fighter in the history of this school, right? I bet he could have taken on Tsuki, no problem."

"If he was around, yeah..." you reply. "But he's not, is he?"

Chuichi shrugs. "Sure... but you are. Let's not be humble, Kaz. You're talented as heck."

"Doesn't stop me from ending up flat on my face half the time."

"Yeah, but you end up flat on your face when other people would end up dead," Chuichi replies. "You're your dads son. I've got all the faith in the world that you can be as good as ol' pops."

"No I can't," you reply. "Nobody could be like him."

"And I'm sure that's exactly what your dad said about someone he looked up to!" Chuichi laughs. "We've all got our heroes Kaz, but there's nothing wrong in trying to one-up them a little. And I really think you can do it with enough hard work. Look... promise me now, pal. With this Archdemon dude on the horizon, you'll work hard to be as good as, if not better than Kankuro ever was... okay?"

>I'll try... I'll have to try.

"That's... almost the spirit!" Chuichi chuckles. "But hey, baby steps, right? Trust me Kaz, you'll get to that level in no time."

"What's with the sudden pep-talks, anyway?" you ask.

Chuichi chuckles. "Well, facing incredible danger and getting your butt whooped is one way to bring out a motivational side. Now..."

Chuichi rises to his feet and brushes himself off before throwing up his fist. "Let's get started with a sparring session, me and you!"

"Seriously?" you raise an eyebrow.

Chuichi nods. "Yes, seriously! Come on, man. Dukes up!"

You sigh. "You're calling them dukes and everything? What is this, the 18th Century? This is so dumb."

"Don't make me speak in an old-timey accent!" Chuichi laughs. "Now, hit me with everything you've got."

"Chuichi... you know that'll hurt you a lot, right?" you ask. "I'm a lot stronger than you."

"Well, why don't you prove it?" Chuichi laughs. "Come on! It's time for fisticuffs!"

You can't help but chuckle at Chuichi's goofiness. Okay... he wore you down, time for some sparring.

The sparring session was very short of course, as Chuichi couldn't keep up with you in a straight up fight for any longer than half a minute, but it did provide the two of you with some much needed stress relief. The two of you make your way back down into the main school building, just in time to hear the bell ring for lunch. You separate there, as Chuichi moves to help Takeshi with his janitorial duties, while you find another new message on your phone.

>Meet with Sae

Well, you can afford to miss one therapy session, and you don't really want an angry Sae on your hands today. You make your way into the cafeteria, as you are treated to the bizarre sight of Sae sitting next to Makoto, with her arm draped over his shoulder. Makoto, of course, looks appropriately nervous.

"Ah, Kaz!" Sae exclaims, motioning for you to sit opposite her. "You're just in time to have dinner with me and my lovely boyfriend Makoto!"

"Your what?" you ask.

"My boyfriend!" Sae repeats. "You know, for when I meet with my ex, remember?"

"Oh..." you nod. "Right, I get it."

"Yes, I'm playing the role of her boyfriend," Makoto explains. "I hope we were able to fool you!"

Angrily, Sae elbows Makoto in the ribs. "I told you not to break character, you idiot!"

"Ow..." Makoto groans. "That's rude..."

"You're okay with this charade?" you ask Makoto. "I figured you'd be against lying."

"Well..." Makoto mutters. "I can't say I'm very comfortable with it, but Sae assures me that it's for a good cause. We're sparing a man's feelings right?"

"Exactly!" Sae exclaims. "And we'll be able to do that if you actually look like you're attracted to me!"

"Well, you being incredibly mean doesn't help..." Makoto sighs.

"I'm not mean!" Sae yells, as she grabs a rice ball from Makoto's plate and swallows it down. "Shut up!"

"Such a loving couple," you mutter, rolling your eyes.

"Well, I'm trying!" Sae snaps. "Look, I need to convince my old boyfriend for just an afternoon, okay? If I can manage that, I'll be okay!"

"Well, the two of you weren't able to last a minute," you reply. "I don't believe for a second that either of you could even possibly be a couple. You're far too different."

"Well he doesn't know that!" Sae exclaims. "We just need to look believable to him. Now, tell us how we do it!"

"Please," Makoto smiles, nudging Sae's elbow.

"Fine," Sae groans. "Tell us how we do it... please?"

>Well, you can try acting like you're in love.
>You should find someone who's a better fit. Makoto won't work.

>You should find someone who's a better fit. Makoto won't work

"Well..." Makoto mutters. "I certainly don't mind being Sae's-"

"You heard him, loser!" Sae exclaims. "It's not working out! Now scram, you're dumped!"

Makoto pauses in his chair. "W-wait... do you actually want me to just leave-"

"Get out of here!" Sae screams. "Go on!"

Makoto rises from his chair and slowly shuffles off with an upset look on his face. Sae grabs what remains of the food on his plate and gets to eating. "I swear, some people can't take a hint! So Kaz, what are you suggesting?"

"Well, you could have been nicer to him..." you sigh. "But nobody is going to believe Makoto was your boyfriend. He's too wholesome, and you're... well, not. You need to show up with someone who could believably be your boyfriend."

"Ah..." Sae ponders, placing a finger to her chin. "You're saying it should be you!"

"What?" you ask. "No, I was just saying that-"

"You're the only one that's believable!" Sae snaps. "It sounded to me like you were volunteering for the role!"

"I wasn't-"

"Too late!" Sae exclaims. "Okay, first thing tomorrow morning, you'll meet me right here and we can practice relationship stuff. Holding hands, acting lovey-dovey, all that crap you do with Io and Mayu!"

"I don't do that with either of..." you begin, before giving up with a defeated sigh. "Whatever. I'll be there, I guess. If I don't, you'll probably try to shoot me or something."

"There, that's the spirit!" Sae laughs, giving you a hard pat on the back. "You're... you're a good pal, Kaz. Well, you're not a terrible one."

"Thanks, Sae..." you smile, as Sae walks off... to grab more food from a vending machine. You stand up and make your way out of the cafeteria to find yourself being approached by Anri.

"Kazuma, I've managed to retrieve Yasunari's journal," she states, as she waves the small black book in front of your face. "I'm just out of Principal Wei's office... it took a lot of convincing, but he eventually allowed me to have it. Finally, I may be able to discover what truly happened the night he was killed."

>Good for you, Anri. Good luck with the case.

>I'm behind you every step of the way, partner.

"Partner?" Anri asks with a smile on her face. "I never thought of the two of us as partners, but... it's a welcome title. Thank you for the support... partner."

"No problem," you smile. "So... what does the journal say?"

"I'm yet to read through it," Anri explains. "I intend to do so through the rest of the day. Though skipping to the end, I see that in the last entry he mentions purchasing some sort of package from Io and heading to class. Do you think we should ask Io about it, see if she recalls what he ordered?"

"Sure thing," you nod. It seems like an innocuous last entry, but you never know. Whatever he bought off Io could be a clue as to what happened to the gut. "Hopefully, she's in the infirmary. Let's go."

You arrive in the infirmary with Anri, dismayed to see that Io isn't there. You do however notice that the two books you placed by her bed are gone. So she at least dropped by to pick up your gifts... unless someone else took them. "Huh... maybe she's back at the dorms?" you suggest. "She might have been working her stall during lunch, and is still down there."

"It seems the most likely place to look," Anri nods, as the two of you make your way back to the dorms.

Io's stall is set up outside the dorm building, but it's completely unattended. Huh... maybe she went to her dormroom, to pick up something from her storage.

Stepping into the building and into the hall, you're confused to see Alice sitting down by the door outside of Io's room. "Alice?" you ask. "What's wrong?"

Alice doesn't speak. She only pouts and points to a small note stapled to the door. You pull it off and examine it.

Dear Kaz, I have to apologise for the sloppy handwriting on this letter. Honestly, it was a last minute decision to even write it. Originally, I planned to just pack up and leave without a word as soon as I had the money, but... I don't know. I felt I owed you a goodbye at the very least. If you can't tell already, I'm not in the academy right now. By the time you're reading this, I'll be on the first train back to my home village with all the money I've gained from my sales. I won't be coming back. I know this might seems sudden to you... but honestly this has been a long time coming. I really hope you aren't saddened by this news, Kaz. If you are, just remember... you haven't lost a friend. In fact, you never really knew me at all.

I think it's better for the both of us if you just forget about me and moved on. I've lost count of how many lies I've told you in the time we've known each-other. I lied to you about everything, Kaz. I used you to be accepted among the others. I flirted and bat my eyelashes and give a whole bunch of sob stories so you could take pity on me, and I made you think that I liked you just so you would take my side. I started repeating some of those lies so much that I actually started to believe them. And I hated it. I hated every single time I lied through my teeth, and I'm not sure why... I was never ashamed of lying to people, of hurting and betraying them before... but you made me feel different.

But a snake will always be a snake, no matter how she sheds her skin. You want to know the worst part? Here I am, writing this farewell to you before I take off, and I still can't even bring myself to tell you why. Really pathetic, isn't it? Well, it's probably better that way. I leave without explanation, and you can put me right out of your mind. I'll just be some girl you once knew, some lying snake who crawled back to her pit once she had sucked the school dry. A girl who never truly liked you, never wanted to be part of your life. That's all I was, and all I'll ever be. Please, don't come after me. Goodbye, Kaz.

Sincerely yours, Io.

You note that the word "sincerely" has been crossed out. Unlike the last time she did such a thing, she didn't re-add it. You stare at the note in disbelief for a moment before Anri asks what it says. Without a word, you hand the note to her, and as her eyes scan the page, you make your way to the common room and collapse into the couch. Damn it all, Io... she really did it. She's gone.

You want to chase her down, drag her back to the academy... but you have to respect her wishes. Still, Io can make whatever claims she wants. She can claim that she never cared, but you know full well she did. She took those books with her, after all. You know that Io was your friend, a good friend, and that nothing she can say now could convince you otherwise. But all of that is false comfort, as the merchant of Dark Gate disappears, leaving you with a pain in your heart that you're not sure will ever go away.

>Bonus Scene

"What are you looking at?"

Kiriko raises her head from the manga and looks over to Roka in the bed next to hers. Mayu is asleep in her chair, and Kiriko's been absorbed into reading for so long that she didn't notice him wake up. Heck, it's already dark out. She expected him to sleep through into the next day, like a koala or something.

"I'm not looking at anything, ape. I'm reading this manga."

Roka stares at it, examining the image on the cover. "That's the Red Mask, isn't it?"

Kiriko's eyes dart between the comic and Roka. "Yeah... I mean, I don't need to tell you that, do I?"

"Are you trying to say I'm the Red Mask?" Roka asks. "Because I'm not, and you should stop accusing me you pesky fly-"

"No, I was just saying you were a fan," Kiriko giggles.

"Oh..." Roka mutters. "Then yeah... I am."

A long silence falls between the two before Roka speaks up once more. "You know... my uncle did the voice of Red Mask."

"What, in the anime?" Kiriko asks.

"Yeah."

"No way!" Kiriko scoffs. "Your uncle was the Red Mask?"

"Shuncho Abe," Roka replies with pride. "You better believe it, fly."

Kiriko sits up in her bed, crossing her legs together as she turns towards Roka. "That must have been so cool!"

"It is," Roka replies, sitting up in turn. "He still sends me a new figurine every Christmas."

"Awesome!" Kiriko laughs. "Then I suppose you're a big fan. You've probably got every chapter of the manga and everything!"

Roka shakes his head. "I've seen every episode of the cartoon a hundred times, but... no. Haven't... read anything."

"Oh..." Kiriko mutters, having remembered Roka's difficulties with literacy. "Hey... why don't I read this one to you?"

"What?" Roka asks.

"Well, you've never read it before," Kiriko shrugs. "But I can read it to you. It must suck to be stuck in that bed without anything to do. And besides, I do kinda owe you one..."

Roka pauses. "Sure... I'd like that."

Kiriko smiles. "Okay!"

Kiriko flicks to the first page and begins to read aloud. "Greetings, true believers! Last time we left our hero, he was deep in the clutches of-hang on, this won't work."

"Huh?" Roka asks. "Why not?"

"It's a manga!" Kiriko explains, waving the book in the air. "You need to be able to see the pictures for it to make sense!"

"Oh, I guess you're right..." Roka grunts. "Too ba-"

"I'll have to sit next to you!" Kiriko suggests.

"Wait, what?"

Kiriko rises from her bed and moves over to Roka's. "Shuffle over a sec, let me get down."

Roka looks at Kiriko confused, but obliges. Kiriko leans back next to Roka, the bed with little room for both of them, leaving Kiriko pushing up against Roka and leaning her head on his shoulder as she continues to read.

"Hang on... something's weird," Roka mutters.

"What is?" Kiriko yawns, leaning more onto him.

Roka ponders for a moment. "We're not yelling. I'm not angry. What's going on?"

Kiriko giggles. "I think we're just being... nice. Having a regular conversation."

"I don't get it..." Roka replies. "But it's nice."

"Yeah, me too..." Kiriko smiles. "But... let's not make a habit of it, okay?"

"Agreed."

Kiriko smiles and gets to reading. She eventually fell asleep while reading to Roka, her head resting on his shoulder as she snoozed until he carries her into her own bed and tucks her in. He lies back into his own bed, but doesn't sleep. He grabs a notepad and pencil from the nurse's desk as he sits on the bed, staring at it.

"K... K for Kiriko..." he mumbles as he attempts to scrawl on the pad with a smile.
