Having decided that my first goal is to grow stronger, this confrontation seems like a gift. Just to be sure, I warn them, "I just want to find the humans. This will end badly for you if you attack."

The only reply I get is the clicking of icy claws on steel shells. With a smile, I ask Vulpix to step back and let me take care of this. Hurriedly she scutters backwards as I take a deliberate step forwards. The onrushing horde of sandslash meet a flamethrower. The sandslash start calling on the ice and snow to blunt the attack, but all it does is buy a little time before the ones at the front are quickly roasted and faint. The row behind them does equally poorly, but all the sandslash behind them have vanished into the hail.

A slight whistling is all the warning I get before they come rushing out of the snow, claws swinging before vanishing back into the hail and leaving behind stinging slices.

I use my mind to detect their movements and evade their swiping claws. Once I get a feel for their movements, I lash out with balls of psychic energy to limit their movements and prevent them from hiding in the hailstorm. Once I have them where I want them, a second flamethrower finishes the group off.

Vulpix pokes her head out of snowdrift she was hiding in and blinks at the sight of the horde of fainted sandslash lying in the rapidly dwindling hailstorm. "Wow." is all she can say.

It seems like my battle didn't go unnoticed as two people dressed in red vests come running over with their Pokemon, a pair of oversized floating snowflakes floating beside them.

The two pokemon position themselves between me and the people, who begin healing the sandslashes, while muttering about strangely aggressive pokemon recently.

My attention is drawn back to the pokemon as the one with black patches and angry glaring eyes bares its teeth and lunges at me while the other one flies at me, spinning. These two feel stronger than the sandslashes and I get the feeling that if I stop paying attention to the pokemon in front of me for even a moment, i'll get smashed.

The one with fangs seems like a straightforward attacker but the spinning one worries me, as I have no idea what it's up to. I summon up another stream of flames and push it towards the Cryagonal. Weirdly, the flames seem to slide off of it as it spins closer. As it spins closer I try angling the flames to get them to stick, but it doesn't seem to work. Just before it hits me I dodge, but the Glalie just behind it crashes into me and attempts a bite but is blinded by the gouts of fire bouncing off of Cryagonal, who keeps going after missing and starts slowing down to avoid crashing.

As it slows down, the flames start taking their toll and water starts dripping off of it. I try to keep the pressure up, but when Glalie clamps down on my arm, I have to stop. A point-blank flamethrower convinces it to let go, however the flames splashing off it start to burn so I ease off.

A sharp crack from behind me catches my attention when Cryagonal comes flying off to one side and skids to a halt in front of a few newly healed sandslash. Vulpix attempts to be threatening, but all it does is let out an adorable yip.

There's a pause that I take advantage of by telling the humans I don't mind knocking out your pokemon to prove my superiority, but they might not like it.

The two rangers pause, then recall both their pokemon. The lead ranger says "I'm sorry. There's been some wierd pokemon around recently and the sandslash are usually a fairly good judge of character, so I made an assumption I shouldn't of. What brings you here?"

I'm looking to test my strength and Vulpix here mentioned that you were strong trainers, who wouldn't attempt to capture me.

"Fair enough. Usually people looking to test themselves challenge the gyms. There's one in Silverock town at the bottom of the mountain if you are interested. I'm not sure how they'll deal with a pokemon challenger though."

The junior ranger adds "Just watch out, there's been some strange folks around recently with hyper-agressive pokemon. I'd understand if you want to head back to base and get healed up first."

>Make haste towards Silverock town. Getting away from the strange people & pokemon seems like a smart idea.

>Head over slowly and use recover to heal up. Vulpix looks like it wants to tell me something away from these folks.

>Heal up at the ranger base first. It should be a safe place to rest and read some of these files I've been carrying around.

I tell the rangers, Thanks, but I'll be on my way. I'm not too worried about strange people. The sandslash also look like they would rather I was somewhere else. and start heading off down the mountain.

Once I'm away from the rangers, Vulpix looks down and asks "Once I've lead you to the town, I won't be useful as a guide anymore and I'm nowhere near as powerful in battle as you are. Can I keep travelling with you anyway? I'd like to see the world beyond the mountains and eventually evolve."

> Vulpix (Alolan forme) wants to keep travelling with me.

>Reassure Vulpix that she's useful and let her keep travelling with me. An extra set of eyes are always useful.

>Part ways when we reach the town. People are still after me, and Vulpix isn't strong enough to fend them off.

We're strong enough for the both of us. Plus it never hurts to have some company and I bet we could help her train

sorry went to sleep.
It's great because you're not a bad writer , also the concept is pretty good.
Overall i just feel you're doing a good job with a concept that is already good in it's execution.
Can't really put my finger on what's wrong or right but overall it just feels interesting to read.

Whoops, got dragged away to do holiday stuff. I'm back and writing. Update in ~15 mins.

I tell Vulpix "I don't mind you travelling along with me. Strength is not a problem, I was born to battle. An extra pair of eyes and knowledge of the world more than makes up for your current lack of fighting prowess. Besides, It's not like I don't have room to grow either. I might just learn something helping you train."

Vulpix's eyes light up as I say this and she chokes out a "Thanks." A few snowflakes start to swirl around her as she says this, before she gets them under control and they drop.

As we walk, I ask her "Would you mind keeping an eye out for anything that might be dangerous? I'm going to focus on healing my arm while we walk.

"Sure!" she yips back.
A couple of hours of walking later, my arm is fully healed (but my legs are slightly sore) and we can see what I can only assume is Silverrock town.

There's a few houses, a Pokemon centre, a building with a few metal tracks leaving it and heading off into the distance, as well as a fancy building with a pointy roof and some statues around it.

The entire town is in a valley, bracketed by glittering silver cliffs that probably gave the town its name. The whole scene is unfortunately marred by a gaping hole in the cliff with a sign depicting a gleaming gear above it.

The other thing that stands out is a weird dome-shaped building with a large cylinder sticking out of it on the ridge above the town with a winding path leading to it.

Before I head anywhere, I need to know where this 'gym leader' is. A mental scan of the area reveals three strong presences, a steely resolute one in the cave with only a few similar (but lesser) presences nearby, a bright shining one that casts a deep shadow in the fancy pointy building surrounded by many lessers and finally a vigilant but lonely one in the dome on the ridge.

>Head for the one in the cave.

The lone presence reminds me of myself somewhat and as an additional point, they're alone, so if they aren't the gym leader, then I can just ask them for directions without drawing too much attention to myself.

Mind made up, I start sidling around the valley to the dome shaped building. As I move closer, the sad state of the building becomes apparent. The paint is chipping off in places and the faded words; Silverock observatory & monitoring station can be made out.

My knock on the door is met by a half-blind old man who upon opening the door says "Only those who have proven themselves worthy in battle can enter my abode." Judging from the lack of fuss, he can't see me clearly enough to realise that I'm a pokemon.

It's clear on seeing him that he's not strong enough to be the gym leader, so I telepathically ask the man 'Can you give me directions to the gym? I'm looking to earn my badge.'

The old man fiddles with a device in his ear and mutters "First time my hearing aid is working properly in years.", before moving on to say more audibly "Time was, I was the Gym leader of this town, not that headstrong lad in the mine."

I thank the old man for his directions and turn to leave. As I do so, the man softly says "I can sense that you are strong. Would you mind a battle for an old man's sake. I'd like to relive the good old days and I'm sure I can still teach you young challengers a thing or two.

>Take him on.
>let Vulpix battle until she starts having too much trouble.

maybe ask about his son... and I guess gym leaders in general. I mean we were told they were strong but what is their purpose exactly? And if he's actually feeling chatty ask why he lives alone up here?

As for letting Vulpix fight. Ask her what she knows and let her know we'll give her tips on the battle to help her along.

I she wants to cut her teeth and get stronger, battling is a good start. Either way this should be a good warmup to the current Gym Leader.

'This is a good chance for you to practice and get stronger.' I pulse to Vulpix, before telling the man 'You're on.'

The old man motions me around to the side of the observatory where there's a packed down rectangle of snow. The old man moves to one end and I move to the other.

He leads with a shout of "Go Durant!" and tosses a silver pokeball into the air. A steel ant bursts forth in a flash of silver light, although once the light fades, patches of rust can be seen on the othewise silver creature.

I pulse 'You're up Vulpix.' To the both of them before turning my attention to Vulpix. 'What can you do?' I ask.

There's a metal scuttling as Durant closes on Vulpix, altough its obviously not as fast as it once was, allowing Vulpix to evade it easily.

'Can you hear me?' Thinks Vulpix as she dodges the clashing pincers again.

'Yes. Loud and clear.' I think back.

This time, Vulpix gets her rear leg caught by one of the pincers as Durant lunges at her. She blows a breath of frost-laden air at it that does little damage, but slows it down even further as its joints slowly lock up.

'I can launch a shard of ice really quickly at something, summon a small hailstorm, pile super-chilled snow on something to attempt to freeze it, blow cold air to slow things down and use a light to disorientate opponents.'

I tell her'That's an impressive list of talents. Keep chipping it down with your icy wind, while keeping away from it.'

Vulpix replies 'Got it.' with a fierce determination, and puts my plan into action.

When he realises what is happening the old man says "That's clever of you to neutralise my speed. Durant, Dig!"

Durant starts burrowing under the snow, just in time to dodge a fourth Icy wind from Vulpix. Within seconds, its out of sight. As Vulpix looks around confused, the snow begins to shake as Durant makes its way back up.

What should I tell Vulpix to do?

use our psychic powers to find Durant and let Valpix know when she needs to dodge. Then have her use her disorientating light (confuse ray) to confuse Durant.

ouch, old rusty still knows how to fight it seems.
>>
I close my eyes and reach out with my thoughts to get a grip on Durant's location. The snow provides little resistance and I'm soon able to find it. Keeping track of Durant, I pulse 'Its coming up from beneath you. Dodge right and hit it with a confuse ray in 3, 2, 1... now!'

Vulpix leaps out of the way in time, but as Durant bursts from under the snow, it launches a cloud of rocks, dirt and ice into the air as well, hiding it from sight and blasting Vulpix with the shrapnel. Vulpix sees a glimmer of metal in the cloud, and launches a confuse ray at it, only to find that Durant is no longer there and instead is right in front of her, slicing at her with its metal legs as it scuttles past, rust forgotten.

I can feel Vulpix wince as the claws connect. Thankfully, when it comes around for a second attack, I'm able to pinpoint it for Vulpix to hit with a second confuse ray. Durant staggers slightly, but keeps on coming and connects a second time leaving Vulpix almost visibly unsteady. 'Do you want to swich out?' I ask her, but she stubbornly refuses thinking 'I have to be able to beat an old, weak pokemon like that one.

Now that Durant is confised, Vulpix can go back to chipping away with Icy winds and evading Durants pincers. The next time Durant attempts to Dig, it hits a harder than normal rock and crashes, allowing Vulpix to direct several shards of Ice down the hole, causing Durant to freeze and get recalled. The old man states "The thing about steel types is that they aren't always strong and slow, as my next pokemon will demonstrate. Before I do though, I'd recommend calling back that vulpix. Even I can see it's wobbling."

There's a fierce determonation pouring off of Vulpix right now, but what the old man is saying is correct. Vulpix is periloulsly close to fainting right now.

>Keep vulpix out.
>Step in personally.

>I'm starting to fall asleep now, so I'll call it a night here. I'm going to be too busy to post for the next 12 days, so the next update will probably be a large one in a new thread then. I'm a sucker for feedback, so any would be welcome.

ask vulpix if she wants to stay out or not? She's at her limit but if she wants to keep going that's here choice.

If she does stay out though tell her to throw up a snow storm as soon as she's able to help keep her opponent off of her and have her make hit and run attacks.
>>
>>979072
Vulpix is obviously going to want to stay, so this vote is more about forcing her to come back or not.

That being said, I'm loving the more detailed plans as it gives me something to work off of, so thanks for that.
>>
>>979076
yeah I kinda figured as much. The idea was more or less to let her know that we trust her and she seems the type that needs to fail every now and again because that's the only way they'll learn their limits... unless you're going by nuzlock rules or something were losing means death then yeah pull her out but I haven't been getting that kind of vibe from this quest.
>>
>>979069
>Step in personally.
if there's a third pokemon, vulpix is out. It's more important to see how far one can go after the adrenaline wears off, than how long that adrenaline lasts.
>>
>>979069
>Don't interfere with vulpix's choice
Don't interfere in people's fights when they're this spirited, this a dangerous idea but i'd rather let her make her own choice or mistake ,she will learn from it anyhow.
>>
>>979069
>Keep vulpix out
>>
>>979069
>Let vulpix stay in
It's her call.

We aren't her master, just a companion trying to help.
