You are the first new recruit of the reformed Overwatch, once an international peacekeeping task force, now a loose coalition of former agents and rag-tag vigilantes. With the rise of world conflict, Overwatch will be needed more than ever. Travel the globe of 2081 with Tracer, Winston, and other recruitable agents. Face off against vile mercenaries Talon, the unpredictable Junkers, and the rising threat of a Second Omnic Crisis. The world needs more heroes. The world needs you.

In a time of global crisis, an elite international task force known as Overwatch was formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. The heroes of Overwatch kept peace for a generation, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and finally disbanded. Now world conflict is rising again. Overwatch may be goneā€¦but the world still needs heroes.

When you were a child, you dreamed of someday joining Overwatch. Someday you would fight bad guys and protect the innocent, along with heroes like Jack Morrison and Ana Amari. You had every action figure, and a poster on your wall. But before you were fully grown, that dream ended.

You watched the U.N. conference on holovid, not believing that these bureaucrats could ever stop the global task force from being the heroes they were. But the shadow of tragedy still haunted Overwatch, after the explosion at their headquarters in Switzerland. Rumors had it the incident caused a rift within the group, that they could no longer work together. The Petras Act was passed into law, and Overwatch quietly disbanded.

Determined to make the best of that era of peace while it lasted, you threw yourself into your studies. As you grew to adulthood, you became ...

At first you become an adventurer, exploring the unknown frontiers of science and the world. You travelled to obscure corners of the globe, doing what you could to help and protect people, and preserve forgotten technologies from the golden age.

But without Overwatch, increasing political tension meant that world governments were powerless against the rise of mega-corporations. You saw how the elite executives of companies like LumeriCo and Vishkar took the reins of global power, discarding people's lives in favor of their profit margins. It was something you couldn't stand to watch. And so you went outside the law. Your skills as an adventurer found great use in the world's criminal underground. You became rich several times, but the money was always lost, either helping the victims of the latest corporate catastrophe, or just trying to stay one step ahead of the law.

One day you were contacted by one of the world's foremost criminal organizations about a job. The contact was sketchy on details. But the payment was good. Too good to pass up. You packed up your gear and travelled to meet ...

You arrive at in Dorado. The streets of the city are brightly lit for the celebration of Festival de Luz, the celebration of the end of the Omnic Crisis. You meet your contact in a back alley, at a gathering of thugs belonging to Los Muertos. Their distinctive style is tattooing skulls and bones on themselves in phosphorescent ink. According to some, Los Muertos are freedom fighters, fighting the Mexican government, protecting those forgotten in the years after the Omnic Crisis. According to others, they're thugs, criminals, street toughs, and anti-Omnic xenophobes. Right now, they're paying you half up front, and that's what important.

"We're delivering this bad boy tonight," says their leader, patting the hood of a hovertruck. "And we're expecting trouble. Make sure you're ready. You bring your own firepower?"

"I always do," you say. You have a favorite weapon you take with you everywhere you go:

Your weapon is a custom design you made yourself, a patchwork of technology you found exploring forgotten sealed-off laboratories. You often need a hand free for climbing walls and operating computers. And you kept finding yourself in unpredictable situations, needing a gun at one moment, and a blade the next. So you created a transforming weapon that's both a gun and a blade. You call it ... the Swordpistol. Although you're really thinking you need to come up with a better name.

JosƩ, the Los Muertos leader, says, "Me and my boys will be in the truck. We'll be driving real slow, this is a payload we can't afford to be shaking around. Our destination is the new LumeriCo power plant ziggurant. I'll have some other guys on the left. We need you to follow us on the right side, keep our flank clear. Make sure we don't get any nasty surprises. Think you can do that?"

"No problem," you say. "LumeriCo will get what's coming to them tonight."

"You got that right," says Jose. "All right, we're rolling out soon. Get yourself into position."

You steathily move out from the alley where the gang members are keeping the payload truck. You get into position on high ground overlooking the truck's path, using a gadget that provides you with enhanced mobility for just such an occasion:

Note: The sword can block bullets under certain circumstances. Turning on the EM defense system when it's in sword mode will temporarily shield you from projectiles.

Time for the moon shoes, you think. You trigger the graviton actuators in your boots and take a short hop, and you fly gracefully into the air as though you were jumping on the moon. These gravity boots are another gadget you made yourself based on some old schematics. They have a short range, but they give you some real flexibility for aerial maneuvers, increasing jump height, even letting you walk on certain walls for a short distance. Someday, with enough modifications, you're confident you can fly around on them. Probably without exploding. Maybe.

From your perch here on the rooftop you can overlook the fountain plaza, all lit up with strings of lights for the Festival. The streets are mostly clear: the celebrations haven't begun properly yet. The LumeriCo ziggurat looms over the city.

Your communicator chirps. It's Jose. "Amigo, our friends ahead at the church seem to be having some trouble. Go see what the problem is, will you?"

You move across the rooftops. The deserted street ahead forms a set of angles surrounding a two-story church, made of old white plaster. The Banco de Dorado is just down the street. You heard that, just recently, the Junkers blew their way into the vault there, made off with a huge payday in gold. You've heard strange things about the Junkers, that they've all gone mad from all that radiation in Australia, but they do know how to pull off a successful heist.

You re-focus on the church. Everything seems quiet. A little too quiet.

You move in carefully, making your way along the rooftops towards the second floor of the chapel. The wall-walking mode on your grav boots lets you take a quick shortcut, and you land on the balcony in front of two doors. From this vantage point, inside the church you can hear shouting, smashing, wood splintering.

You enter the church's second floor, wary of what you might fight. The second floor is empty, but it gives you a bird's eye view of the ground floor. You can see four gang members lying on the church floor, slumped among the broken pews. A fifth member is currently being interrogated by an old man in a blue jacket, currently facing away from you.

"Ā”Ay dios mio!" the thug manages to exclaim before taking a punch to the face and getting knocked out.

The man drops the thug, steps back. At first, you think, he hasn't noticed you. But then something on his equipment beeps at him, and he turns and looks straight up at you. You notice his white hair, his scars, his combat build, but mostly you notice the large visored mask obscuring most of his face.

"Huh. Didn't expect to see you here." the man says in a gravelly voice. "I've heard of you. Jumped-up little punk who thinks a little vandalism and petty theft does anything to stop the corps from doing what they want. Keep playing your little games, kid. Old soldiers like me still have work to do."

"Well, Mr. Ghost, whoever you are. I don't know why you're defending LumeriCo, but It's my job to stop you. I won't let the corporations exploit the people of this city any more than they have."

"Look, dumbass," he says, exasparated. "If you really hate the corps, if you're a freedom fighter like you think you are, you'll help me stop Los Muertos and LumeriCo. Otherwise, stay the hell out of my way. You wouldn't want to get hurt."

"What- what do you mean, Los Muertos AND LumeriCo? The Dead are going to destroy the power plant! We're going to stop LumeriCo from exploiting--"

"I don't have time to explain myself, kid," he growls. "But they're in cahoots. You can either follow me, help take down your glowing friends, and strike one against LumeriCo. Or you can shut up and back down. Unless," he says, and chuckles hoarsely. "You really think you can fight me."

You're confused. Los Muertos and LumeriCo, working together? You thought the mission tonight was about sabotaging the power planet. But now that you think about it ... you never did see exactly what was in that hover truck.

The old soldier strides out of the church. You drop down, hovering gently to a stop on the ground with your gravboots, and follow after him.

"If you're planning to tag along, kid, that's fine," the soldier growls. "Just don't get in my way."

"I haven't made up my mind yet, old-timer," you tell him. "If I decide you're lying to me, I'm going to take you down."

He chuckles grimly. "Can't argue with that."

A wall separates this neighborhood from the Plaza of Lights. You follow the soldier through a nearby shadowed alleyway, leading to a set of stairs, one going up, one down. Down the stairs, you see the Los Muertos payload truck parked. The gang members are running around the back of the truck, trying to re-arrange the load. The camoflaging blankets slip, and you catch a glimpse of something glowing underneath.

"Careful!" you hear Jose say with quiet urgency. "If anyone sees us with a LumeriCo power core, we're hosed. We've got to get this to the plant before the deadline, or we won't get paid!"

"What about the kid?" asks one of his flunkies. "Didn't you tell him we were sabotaging the ziggurat? He's going to be pissed when we find out we're actually helping finish it."

"Don't worry about him," says Jose. "Before he finds out, I'll take care of him. Permanently."

You take a step back. God damn it. You have a hard time believing it, even if you just heard it with your own ears. "But - how can they do this? LumeriCo exploits the people of Mexico, and - and Los Muertos, they're supposed to --"

"Kid," says the old soldier. "Morals don't make the world go 'round. Money does. Now you know. What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to ..."

"I'm going to help you take them down," you say, your fists tightening. "Doesn't look like they're going to pay me anyhow. Or rather, they'd only pay me with a bullet to the back of the head."

"That's how it works with criminals," says the soldier, dryly. "Better get used to it if you want to stay alive in your line of work."

Your line of work. A criminal. You used to be an adventurer, an explorer, and you had dreams of being a freedom fighter. And long before that, you had another dream. A dream of helping people around the world. Of being a hero.

Sometimes you think you're succeeding. Other times, you don't know where it all went so wrong.

The soldier seems to notice your distraction. "Stay focused, kid. We'll attack on my signal. You hit them high, I'll hit them low. Deal?"

"One condition," you say. "Take Jose alive. The one with green paint. I want answers."

"Works for me," he says. "I'll just give him a good beating."

"Then, deal."

The soldier moves forward down the stairs, staying in the shadows, heavy rifle at the ready. You take the other route, up the stairs, getting a good vantage point from above. Jose is standing to one side, watching his crew of four work on the truck payload.

When the soldier attacks, you plan to ...

It's a cool idea! Right now, you just have the ability to block bullets for a limited time. Soon enough, though, you may find an opportunity to upgrade your equipment.
>>
You look at the wall opposite the stairs, getting a fun idea in your head. You figure out some angles, and get ready.

You watch one of the four thugs leave the group and head back into the shadows of the alleyway. Then you hear a thud, and a grunt, and a crash. The other three thugs, alerted, jump down from the hover truck and grab their weapons: two of them have lengths of metal pipe, a third has a submachine gun. They shout warnings and threats in Spanish, but are silenced by the sound of gunfire as the soldier opens up with his rifle. The thugs dive for cover.

That's the signal, you guess. You transform your weapon into energy pistol mode, and make a jump at an angle for the opposite wall, twisting your body as you do to point your feet at the wall. Triggering your gravboots at just the right moment, you continue with your sideways momentum and run across the wall.

It's been a while since you tried to aim right after you turned the world sideways, but you give it your best shot anyway, zapping away with the pistol. The thugs are in cover from Soldier's rifle, but you're shooting from an angle they never expected, and you nail one straight away. The thug with the SMG fires back, but he can't get a bead on your fast, unpredictable movement. He exposes himself by doing so, and takes a burst of fire from the soldier in the side of the head.

The third remaining thug hunkers down behind the concrete, but the soldier fires some kind of miniature rocket launcher attachment on his rifle, and the thug's cover explodes. He staggers back, bleeding from the concrete shards, and falls over.

Your gravboots' charge expires, and you drop to the ground. The only Los Muertos left standing is Jose. You walk towards him. He backs up in the direction of the alleyway, sweating, his hands up in surrender. He doesn't even notice the soldier standing behind him, and bumps right into him. Jose jumps away with a shriek. The soldier lets out a grim laugh. "What do you want to do with him, kid? Should I give him that beating now?"

>Yeah, go ahead. I'm in no rush.
>Just let me talk to him.
>I changed my mind. Just kill him.

Primary gunblade
Alt-Fire: Shift form (sword/gun)
Passive: Mag boots (jump higher and wall run)
Shift: EM Field a temporary field that deflects metallic projectiles
E: Cloaking field. Renders you invisible only applies while not moving.
Q: Omnislah. Magentically charges surrounding enemy which allows us to rush at them with blinding speed

"Just let me talk to him," you say. "If he decides to be difficult, loosen his lips. Both literally and figuratively."

"Acknowledged," replies the soldier, cracking the knuckles of one fist, then the other.

You walk towards the gang leader, gunblade still in your hand. "Jose. Amigo. I thought we had a good thing going. What happened? How did you end up in bed with LumeriCo? What was the real mission?"

Jose's eyes dart back and forth, looking for an escape route. He can't find one, and so he begins to cave. "LumeriCo, they ... they hired us. To deliver the core for the ziggurat. They made a big deal out of turning it on ahead of schedule, so it had to be delivered tonight, but -- but --"

"But what?" you demand. "What was so special about it that they had to hire thugs and criminals to deliver it in secret? Why hire me just to kill me?"

"I don't know!" says Jose. "Please, just let me go, amigo!"

"He's lying," growls the soldier. "Guess I'll get to hit you after all, huh, punk?"

"No! Stop! I -- I -- I don't know for sure, but I hear the power cores contain some kind of special reactor. One that's illegal in Mexico. They said the radiation was too dangerous. That it makes people sick. But LumeriCo, they pay the government to look the other way, and then, they do what they like. And they knew ..." His eyes flicker to the soldier. "They knew that someone was coming after them. So they wanted to hire someone special. Someone like you, kid. They thought you could protect the truck and then just ... quietly disappear."

"I can't believe you'd do that. Not just to me, but to your own city," you say, disgusted. "I think Los Muertos was supposed to be the protectors of the people? That you were fighting for their freedom?"

"Is hard to have freedom without money, man. You have to eat before you can fight. First we survive, then we win."

"You keep telling yourself that. Lie that this was really a good thing." You turn away.

"Are you done here?" the old soldier asks you. "Because if so--"

"Wait," you say, cutting him off. You hear something. You look up ...

Another gang member stands on the ledge above you. He hefts some kind of huge machine gun in both hands. "Ā”Chingate, cabron!" he shouts with glee, the machine gun spinning up.

No time to think. With a quick snap of your wrist, you transform your weapon into blade mode and trigger the magnetic shield. The machine gun kicks to life, the bullets a deafening sound like a roaring ocean, and it's still terrifying to stand in front of it always has been and it always will be you think but you swing the blade out in front of you, and the magnetic shield snatches the bullets out of the air.

You're still alive, but belatedly you think to check, and the gangster has a huge ammo belt feeding into that machine gun, and it's still firing, and the sword can barely hold the charge any longer --

"Get down!" shouts the soldier, tackling you to the ground. The bullets fly overhead. You twist to look up at the gunner, wondering if your sword will recharge before he can adjust his aim. You don't think you can. But then--

"Bombs away!" a female voice chirps. You see something fly in from the side, landing at the gangster's feet. A blue light pulses from below the gangster. He has just enough time to look down, realize his situation, and scream, before exploding into a thousand pieces.

When the pieces of gangster finish raining down, you look up to the ledge he stood on. A woman is standing there, dressed in a flight jacket and bright yellow-orange tights. She has spiky brown hair, and some kind of device attached to her chest.

You get to your feet, brush yourself off. "Hello there," you call up to her.

"Hiya!" The woman in the flight jacket salutes you, then suddenly disappears in a flash of blue light, only to reappear just as suddenly, directly in front of you, perhaps two feet away. She travelled the distance in barely a moment. She grins, cheeky. "Were you expecting the cavalry, luv? Name's Tracer. Nice ta meetcha."

"Nice to meet you," you say, holding out your hand to shake, hoping it isn't trembling. "I ... I used to have your action figure. As a kid. I had that poster, with you and Reinhardt and Mercy--"

Tracer takes your hands with both of hers, pumps it enthusiastically. "Well that's peachy! It's always nice to meet a fan. Not too many of them these days. Now, er, if you'll excuse me a moment, I'm about to have an awkward conversation," she says, letting go of your hand, and laughs nervously.

"Oh boy," says the old man, getting to his feet. "More company. Just what I needed tonight."

Tracer approaches the old man, slowly, apprehensive. "Jack," she says. "I-is that really you? It's been so long--"

"Sorry. Can't help you." The soldier picks up his rifle, turns his back, begins to walk away.

Tracer reaches after him. "Jack, wait! Please! You know and Winston and I are trying to do. But we can't do it alone!" You hear the sadness and frustration in her voice. "We need you, Jack!"

The old man stops. "I can't help you, kid. Jack's dead. Died a long time ago. I'm just a ghost. An old soldier with a score to settle." He looks up at the moonlit sky. "Lena. Back then. Overwatch died too. You should let it die. But if you really want to make a damn fool of yourself, and start it all up again. Take the kid with you. Had my back tonight. Might be useful someday." And he walks off, into the shadows.

Tracer watches him leave. It's hard to tell with those goggles, but you think you see a tear in her eye.

For now you have to be practical, stay focused. "Tracer. What the hell do we do with this core thing? We should probably secure this. It looks ... dangerous."

Tracer slaps herself on the cheeks. "Right. We've got to get this squared away." She activates her communicator. "Wiiiiinstooon! I've got the core. Calling for evac!"

"Right away," you hear the deep voice of the world's only ape scientist reply. "Coming in now."

"That's sorted soon enough, then," she says.

You say to her, "What did he mean by starting up Overwatch again?"

Tracer takes a look at you, sizing you up. Then she grins. "Just wot he said. We're starting it back up again. The world still needs heroes. Right now it's just Winston and me. But we're going to change all that." She takes out one of her pistols, twirls it around her finger, thinking. Looks back at you. "I sawr you in action back there. You were pretty fast with those gadgets of yours. And if Jack vouches you, well, I can't think of a higher recommendation. What do you think, luv? Care to be our first recruit, and join the new Overwatch? The world could always use more heroes."

"Overwatch? I ..."

Tracer grabs your right hand with both of hers again, pumps it up and down with the same enthusiasm. "Orright! Welcome to the Overwatch Recruitment Program! I'm sure you'll be a big help. In fact, there's something I need your help with right away."

"What's that?"

She points to the power core. "Help me move this bloody thing!"

The roar of engines splits the air. A VTOL aircraft appears in the night sky. "There's Winston," she says. "I can't wait to introduce him to our first recruit. I have a good feeling about you."

I don't actually play Overwatch. Doesn't it have relatively dense worldbuilding and backstory?
>>
>>955771
Relative to video games, absolutely.

Each character has their own history, and connections to other characters. Several of them, such as both who showed up in this first chapter -- Tracer and Jack (aka Soldier 76) -- are former members of the original Overwatch. So we have 23 heroes and villains with origin stories. And we can surmise a great deal about the world through those stories, and from the levels in the game.

The exact timeline of the world's history is ... vague. But since our story takes place in the game's "present" of 2081, that will be fine.
>>
>>955976
>>955771
If I am interpretting this correctly, and I am pretty sure I am a little off, we (the MC) is in the present of the game, directly after the events in the story and trailers.
>>
>>956077

That's right. This takes place in the present of the game, after the animated shorts and comics. They're all considered to be canon for now. Doomfist's gauntlet was successfully defended from Talon by Tracer and Winston at the Overwatch Museum, and is now on loan to Numbani's Doomfist exhibit. King's Row has a statue dedicated to Mondatta after Widowmaker assassinated him. And so on.

I'm taking the setup for the game and making an actual story about a hero team, instead of randomly assembled FPS arena battles. The main difference is the existence of the MC.
>>
>>956102
It's also canon that Terry Crews is Doomfist.

It's been twenty-four hours since you accepted Tracer's invitation to join Overwatch. Everything before then is already starting to seem like another life, one you can barely remember.

Yesterday you saw the base for the first time. As the Aurora aircraft finished its journey across the Atlantic, and the famous Rock of Gibraltar came into view. Soon you were descending to that rumored sanctuary of the forgotten heroes of Overwatch: Watchpoint Gibraltar. Once this place was merely an outpost used for communications, radar, and satellite launches. One of many reinforcing Overwatch's global network of strongpoints. Now the Watchpoint is now all that remains.

The base fell into decay after the disbanding. Some of it is still ruined or uninhabitable, but Winston has cleared out and restored the section between his laboratory and the satellite launchpad. Apparently he's lived here for several months, and has had plenty of time for "a little spring cleaning" as he phrased it.

After you arrived, Tracer took you on a whirlwind tour of the base. She time-blinked ahead consistently, sometimes re-calling to your side to urge you ahead, as though forgetting that you were stuck moving through time at one speed.

"That's Winston's lab," she said. Zip! Zoop! "And this is the comm tower. Still working on getting the full network online." Zap! Zip! "That's the radar array. Spots any nasties coming in. Winston told me he got surprised here by Talon a few weeks ago. With the radar online, we'll be ready for them if they try a trick like that again."

Tracer led you through the garage, into the Aurora's hangar, and down a set of stairs labelled "Crew Quarters". At the bottom of the stairs you found a basic dormitory. Ten beds, a row of lockers, and some old posters left on the wall. You think you recognize that cartoon cat from somewhere.

"These are the bunks," said Tracer. "Used to be for the Aurora crew, but it's ours now. You can choose any one you like. Except for this one," she added. She blinked onto one of the beds, plopped herself down on it, grinned. "This one's mine."

You thought about asking Tracer about her harness, the chronal accelerator. Doesn't she need to live in some kind of specially designed room in order to keep her timeline stable without it? In the end, you decided not to ask about her "disability" out of the blue. You barely know her. Maybe there will be a better opportunity later.

"Tell me about the new Overwatch," you said instead. "Is it really just you and Winston? What are your plans?"

"Well for starters, there's you too, luv. So that makes three," she said, holding up three fingers. "As for our plans, well ...". She leant back on her hands, looked up at the ceiling. "I don't rightly know to be honest. I only connected with Winston a few days ago, when he sent out the recall signal. We've put out a few fires since then, like the LumeriCo power core in Dorado you helped us with. But wot're we going to do about the future? Talon is out there, the Omnics are fightin' in Russia, and the Petras Act still makes it illegal for Overwatch to operate ..." Tracer groaned, flopped back on her bed, covered her face with her hands. "I was countin' on Jack to handle all of this!"

"Hey, at least you're the one talking to me and not that Jack guy," you said. "Man's got a voice that makes sandpaper feel like silk."

Tracer giggled, despite herself. "That he does. You're a little easier to listen to yerself than that growly old bear. Maybe it's best he ain't here after all."

You continued to try to lighten the mood. "I don't see what you're worried about. We've got a talking gorilla scientist, an accidental time-traveller, and a criminal, coming together to re-form an illegal task force, banned by the United Nations. I'm sure no-one will even believe that team exists! They'll never see us coming."

"Of course!" Tracer sat up, pumped her fist. "It's the perfect element of surprise. They won't even believe we exist!"

"Anyway," you said. "Whatever happens, I'm glad you pulled me out of there when you did. I was done with that life. If I had to hear one more "chinga tu madre," I was gonna flip." You headed towards the stairs. "I'm going to go explore a little bit, find a place to practice. Talk to you later."

You left the crew quarters, exited the hangar into what Tracer had called the garage. There didn't seem to be actual vehicles, besides an old forklift. The sun glared brightly from the horizon, just visible over the radar array. This was a wide open area without any sensitive-looking equipment. Perfect for some quick practice, you thought. If you're going to be a member of Overwatch, you need to make sure your skills are up to the task.

You plugged in a pair of headphones, turned on some classic swing music, and prepped the graviton actuators in your boots. "Mobility is the king," you said. "Got to stay on top."

You spent some time in the garage practicing the varieties of parkour available only to someone with gravity-altering boots. Low-gravity jump boosts to useful high ground positions. Running across the wall to an unexpected flank. You visualized combat situations in your mind, trying to imagine, if there was someone there, then I would go here ... if I took fire from below, then I'd need to run up this wall, and jump there ...

Through the music, you heard a deep voice laughing nearby. You stopped, turned off your music player, and looked over to see a large armored gorilla sitting up on the ledge above the dip in the road.

"Hi there," called Winston. "That was an impressive display of mobilty with those graviton actuators." The gorilla stood up and activated his jump jets, hurtling through the air, landing with a ground-shaking THUD nearby you. You tried not to flinch. Winston adjusted his glasses, smiled politely. "Just wanted to make sure you were settling in okay. Tracer gave you the tour? Showed you the quarters?"

"She did, yeah. I think I've got the the place figured out. I mean, it's just one big line from your laboratory to the launchpad, really."

"That it is. I needed to have the path clear for a certain project I have in mind for the near future." Winston sat himself down on the ground, took out a banana. "Do you mind? I know it's a stereotype, but I still love these. Thanks." He started to peel the banana with his feet. "You might be wondering why the reformed Overwatch ... the so-called Overwatch you might say ... is only Tracer and myself. I activated the recall signal a few days ago. And only Tracer answered. At first, I thought -- well, I thought the others weren't interested. But I realized that there was a problem with our communications array."

"So the signal didn't go out properly?" you asked.

"Correct. I believe it only reached Lena, who happened to be in London." Winston chewed thoughtfully on a mouthful of banana, swallowed. "I have a plan to boost our communcations capacity, which should allow us to send the signal properly.

"As for you and Tracer? Well, we can't have you two just sitting around here keeping me company. I have other ideas for things to keep you busy." Winston looks up at the setting sun, adjusts his glasses. "It's getting late. Why don't you turn in for the night? Stop by my laboratory tomorrow after breakfast with Tracer. We'll go over some options."

And can we ask:
"What was it like before?"
>>
"What do you have in mind?" you asked. "Do you have to steal something to make it work?"

"No, I've actually got all the parts I need right here in the Watchpoint. This was always a satellite launching facility. And since what I need to do is launch a satellite, that part more or less came together on its own. All that's left now is for the power of science to do its work. And by that I mean I have a lot of work to do patching bits and pieces of old comm satellites together.

"I have many things in mind for you and Lena. But right now, with just the three of us, we're vulnerable. Our highest priority is to track down some other agents. Athena couldn't send them the recall signal, but she did manage to locate a handful of my old friends. Angela, Reinhardt, Jesse, and others. We haven't exactly stayed in touch over the years. But I'm betting that if we show them the opportunity to do good in the world again, they'll be willing to take it. You and Lena will just have to show it to them."

"All right, then. Me and L- Tracer will get on it." You scuffed your foot awkwardly. "To be honest, I told Tracer that I had her action figure when I was younger. I didn't tell her that I had scraped together enough to by the whole set."

"Heh. Well, I won't let her in on your secret. But think of this. Maybe someday you'll have your own action figure."

Winston turned away to go back to his laboratory, but you called after him. "Can I just ask -- what was it like? Before, I mean."

"It was ..." Winston took a moment, looked up at the sky. "I suppose you heard that I grew up on the moon. I didn't come to Earth until I was a grown ape. It was very strange, for many years. Until Overwatch. They made the Earth feel like my home. For me, that's all there is to it."

Winston shambled off, knuckle-walking back to his laboratory.

All of that was yesterday. This morning, after a quick breakfast of protein bars and canned beans in the Watchpoint's sadly under-stocked kitchen, you and Tracer join Winston in his laboratory.

"Good morning," calls Winston, currently swinging from the large tire hanging by a rope from the ceiling. He hops off the tire swing, lands with a thud. "It's time that we continued adding to our ranks. With our young companion here, there are three of us. But we'll need more to fight back against the rising conflict in the world." He knuckle-walks over to the control bank for the holographic globe, taps a few keys. Five agent locations spring to life across the world.

"Athena was able to detect activity from these agents," says Winston. "We have a fix on recent locations from them. You should be able to head out together, and do what you can to convince them to join us." The gorilla sits back, takes off his glasses, breathes on them, begins to polish them. "I feel compelled to warn you, the areas you'll find most of them in are not what I'd consider safe. It seems our friends are staying busy."
>>
Winston puts his glasses back on, walks over to the holo-globe. "Personally, I would recommend contacting Dr. Ziegler first," he says, tapping Switzerland. Mercy's angelic form and Overwatch profile appear on the nearby wall screen. "We could use somebody to patch us up if anything goes wrong. She's proficient both as a combat medic and as one of the foremost medical professionals on the planet. Even if you don't take her into battle alongside you, she'll make sure that whatever happens to you out there, you'll be back in fighting shape for your next mission."

You walk over to the holo-globe, examining your choices.

Who should you recruit first to the new Overwatch?

>Angela Ziegler, aka "Mercy": Zurich, Switzerland

"I agree," you say. "Let's contact Dr. Ziegler. We're going to need someone to patch us up. You can only be lucky for so long before you need a healer."

"My thoughts exactly," replies Winston.

"Maybe we can hit Reinhardt on the way back. The man was the heart of Overwatch."

"Heh. That's true. For all his talk of glory and honor, Reinhardt always put the team first. I'll get you set up with the Aurora. Before you go, however." Winston turns one of the nearby small monitors in your direction. "I should probably introduce you to Athena."

"Good day, recruit," says a smooth, female, clearly artificial voice from the computer. "It's good to have you on the team. I am Athena, Watchpoint Gibraltar's computer system, and Winston's research assistant. I look forward to working with you."

Winston taps away at his keyboard. "While you're here, and we have Athena's attention. Why don't we set up your official profile as an Overwatch Recruit?"

"I always liked to keep a few secrets," you say. "I'll tell you this much. The name some people call me by is Bandit. I don't know if I want that to be my official Overwatch name or whatever. Maybe something will come naturally. But that's what you can call me for now." You think a moment, then add, "And I'm from Canada. Might as well put that in there. Overwatch is a global task force, right? Now you've got your first Canadian agent."

"All right, Bandit," says Winston. "I'm happy to tell you that you are now officially registered as an Overwatch recruit. Congratulations, young man."

"Congrats, luv!" Tracer says with a wink. "Why don't I go see if the store room's got anything to drink for us to celebrate with?" She blinks away in a blue streak.

"Aren't you forgetting something?" Winston calls after her.

A distinctive whizzing sound fills the air as Tracer recalls to her position four seconds ago. "Roight! The mission! Yes. Of course." She pounds her fist down into her other hand. "We're going to go find Mercy, and get her on the team! Let's do this!"

When you were a child, you dreamed of joining Overwatch. This wasn't exactly what it looked like in your imagination. There were a lot more people celebrating and cheering you on. Instead it's just you, a gorilla in glasses, and a spaced-out time traveller.

Still.

An Overwatch agent.

You walk out of Winston's laboratory with Tracer, into the bright sunlight. The sun is rising in the blue sky. You feel a smile on your face.
>>
>>958449
To our female voters, take heart. Bandit claims to be male, but who knows what's really under the mask?

Either way, our MC is a slim, athletic person, medium height, unidentifiable mixed race. A former adventurer-turned-criminal, focusing on agility, skill, and gadgetry over strength or durability.

I'm done for tonight, guys. Thanks for playing Overwatch Quest.

Thanks for running guy.
>>
>>958463
Have we finalized our abilities?
>>
>>958469
Only some of them. MC here has the ability to level up over time.

MC Current Stats:

Callsign: Bandit
Nationality: Canadian
Base: Unknown
Role: Attack

HP: 200, Speed: 5.5
Equipment:
Gunblade (1/2): Transforms between a sword and a mid-range firearm.
Magnetic Barrier (E): Activate to protect yourself from projectile attacks.
Gravity Boots (Jump): Jump higher, fall slower, run on walls.

You don't yet have what the heroes call an "ultimate ability". But you have a vision to create some kind of Omnislash ability. You also feel like you could use another gadget in your arsenal, and that your magnetic barrier could use a little extra ... something. Maybe now that you have access to Winston's laboratory, and connections with the scientists of Overwatch, they can help you out with some of these upgrades you're thinking about.

So we have a few open slots for gadgets, allowing our MC here to level up over time as you recruit more scientists. You start with Winston who can help you boost your energy-based abilities. With his help, you can probably develop that Omnislash ultimate. In the future, who knows?
>>
What do we look like, what is our aesthetic?
With the criminal background and gunsword weapon I'm thinking something like a payday character with a suit, gauntlets and greaves.
Also I'm not a fan of the ethnicity being everything. Maybe instead Italian-Canadian with Russian ancestry?
>>
>>958481
I approve the Omnislash.
An idea for a gadget would be gravity gloves that let's us push and pull enemy's and allies.
For our barrier the ability to reflect the bullets at the end like a shotgun blast is obvious but i also had an idea about compressing and shaping the projectiles into armor instead.

Just had a look through the comic. It's real. Not exactly sure what Blizzard was thinking with this one.

Tracer's probably bisexual anyway. That's not the issue for me:

>MFW Blizzard thinks Tracer would casually have a relationship with a civilian while becoming an outlaw superhero.

The whole point of a superhero's secret identity so the regular people in their lives don't get targeted by the villains, right?

I'm thinking in my canon, Tracer breaks it off with Emily shortly after this comic, too worried about her being hurt or used as a pawn by Talon or whatever.

>tfw Pharmercyfags BTFO

So, I am going to treat this in the most logical manner possible and state that one of these statements is true;

1) Tracer is bisexual, problem solved.

2) That shit ain't canon. Which to be frank a large portion of it shouldn't be;

Why are soldier 76 and Ana hanging out when 76 is trying to disconnect from his past?

Why is widdowmaker hanging out at a graveyard, presumably grieving, when she no longer has any emotions / attachment to those people?

There are more but you get the idea.

3) There is shit going on we don't know; maybe it is a part of her cover story or some bullshit but I think I am going to go with 2.
>>
>>958852
Widow still has feelings deep down. When Mercy resurrects her, she sometimes screams, "Let me go back! I want to see him!"

So I was thinking about it, did we want to be able to shift it into a gun form and vice versa or keep it as one solid piece that could be viable for both depending on how you hold it?

Also is it an assault rifle, submachine gun or something? AS it is I was thinking if we went assualt rifle, it would be about the length of a longsword, with teh rifle in the middle of the blade with a single edge for cutting as we'd need the under side of the barrel for our other hand to hold it steady.

In addition to that the under side of the blade would hold the trigger guard, ammo slot for bullets, and the pommel would work out as a shoulder rest for the stock for any kick back.

Then the hand guard on the lower half would work as the handle for the gun while the upper half of the handgaurd works out as a scope or sights for the gun portion.

Our dude would just need to be really good at switching between his grip to use either or .
>>
Making vast sums of money via crimes and mostly spending it on saving people or evading capture was great

Super garbage sketch with super garbage lighting incoming.

I had a real hard time figuring out how this thing would fold without being super complicated so i decided to just make it super simple with the mechanics handled by TECHNOLOGY.

The grip rotates around the center circular portion while the trigger and guard presses into the grip itself.

The fins on the top and bottom of the "barrel" swing out on hinges and lock into place to form a the crossguard of the sword. The "barrel" then telescopes into a blade of about 2.5 feet.

I also had a hard time deciding on what kind of blade it should be but I suppose any could work.

Forgot to mention that the energy cell for firing and the EM shield would be inside of the handle.

Oh idea! What if we had the center peice that forms the firing mechnaism and the blade for the gun to be some protoplasma type material that can be used for omni slash ability where we go full ham on this with a light saber tier weapon. The gun portion of it can fire out shots like the predator cannon that burns and melts things through when it hits.

Regarding Gender:
MC is male. I threw in that line about "what's really under the mask" to imply that any anons who want to headcanon MC as secretly-female-disguised-as-male are free to do so. If you're thinking about some of the costumes in the art inspiration being female, well, some girls have cool costumes.

Regarding Costume:
Hood confirmed, no cape confirmed. Cool mask with HUD would be appropriate.

Regarding Name:
>" I don't know if I want that to be my official Overwatch name or whatever. Maybe something will come naturally. But that's what you can call me for now."
So no, it's not locked in. But I spent the entire prologue calling MC "the kid", I have to call him something at some point. Unfortunately there just aren't a lot of cool, short, punchy words regarding magnetism or gravity. But if something cool does come up over the course of play, we can switch to that. For now, it's Bandit.

Regarding the Gunblade: It is a transforming weapon like RWBY, Bloodborne, or FF13.

Regarding Waifus: MC is a straight guy, because I'm not into in dudes myself, so I'm not really interested in writing about that. I'm not railroading you into a romance, though. If you want to ignore bitches and get money, that's fine with me.

Regarding not being criminal enough: Dude, we haven't even had a real mission yet, hold your horses.

Regarding backstory, favorite foods, etc.:
We'll work on that over the course of the quest. I like to add a scattering of questions about stuff like that during play. So your character goes to a restaurant, that's a good time to decide what kind of food they like. Your character talks about his past, that's a good time to decide on some backstory. That sort of thing.

For now, MC listens to "the classics" which basically means all the music that exists IRL today. And sour food is fine.

You can stick to surfaces for a short period. You can't wall-ride forever like Lucio, but you can do short Prince of Persia style wall runs.

That may change in the future, as this is one of the pieces of equipment that could be upgraded.

>>959699
Either tonight or tomorrow night, I'll have to look at what I need to do IRL and get back to you.

Yes, you went Indiana Jones on some ruins, including the giant rolling boulder. You were basically him, but you explored places like closed-up laboratories of the pre-Omnic Crisis "golden age" from about 2020-2040, searching for lost technology.

>>960010
I mean, Overwatch is pretty much a renegade organization, now.
It's not exactly condoned.
Or legal.
>>
>>960012
I imagine our pistol being like D.Va's and Mercy's, quick shots that don't really cause a lot of damage, and our blade more like Genji's Ult but with Reinhardt's speed. We'd be the great mid-range guy who can flank like Reaper, but anything that gets close to us or is far enough away fucks us over. We don't have a knockback or a quick getaway ability like other heroes, and that means that unless we pop in and take most of the other team out we're fucked.
>>
>>960048
we have a sword we want them close
also character were good/bad against
>>
>>960048
>We don't have a knockback or a quick getaway ability like other heroes.
Unless we go with my gravity gloves idea. >>958746
>>
>>960062
We would get fucked over horribly by Mei.
Reaper would destroy us.
Reinhardt we could do okay against, just have to jump around a lot.
>>
>>960012

I've been trying to work out where we fit mechanics-wise for a bit of today. We're clearly an Offense character, with some elements of Lucio, Zarya, and Genji all wrapped up into one.

It could be argued we have good burst damage, and excel at, like Tracer, flanking groups and eliminating single enemies.

I suspect our hard counters would be Torbjorn, Bastion, and Pharah. Torbjorn and Bastion can simply lock down areas and cut off our mobility, while Pharah's burst damage and aerial superiority leaves us at a serious disadvantage. Zarya and Roadhog could be problematic, too--the former because if she gets in close her barriers and beam gun could rip us apart and the latter because he preys on squishies like no tomorrow--and we are still very much squishy.

And of course, a pocket Mercy never hurts. If Ana gives us a Nano boost, we could do some real damage, too.

A third option presents itself in going full-on smoked ham with Zenyatta and just wrecking shit--Zen's Harmony orb in our back pocket giving us the heals while his Discord orb helps single out targets for us to gank.
>>
>>960075
ah zenyatta you glorious buddha bot
also having lucio to boost our already great mobility would be good
>>
>>960075
We're a supportive Offensive character in my opinion. Against other Offensive heroes and Tanks we'd be simple enough to deal with since we don't have any tricky gadgets and our mid-range pistol doesn't really pop, but with a group you totally don't wanna' ignore us or you're gonna' regret it.
>>960092
>We just jump around a payload while the loan Tracer screams in rage about not being able to hit us.
>>
The most important question of all: hit scan or projectile?
>>
>>960075
Zenyatta, Genji and us would make the greatest trio.
>>
>>960099
Hit scan.
>>960102
I honestly think the best trio in the game right now is Winston/Reinhardt/Anna. If you have a Winston with an Ultimate ready, you pop that fucker with a Nano Boost and he jumps in and starts zapping motherfuckers, when the boost ends he turns Primal Rage and starts smashing fuckers. Meantime you can put to sleep the other enemy tank, Reinhardtz dashes in and shoulder bashes the fucker, and because WIntson is knocking everyone around they can't even focus.

Do this all the time on Hanamura.
>>
>>960095
yes good.
also as long as we stay mobile we would be a great tank kill if we get close for our sword.
don't forget we have a small shield alt for our sword that any metal bullets stop and get used like a shot gun. eventualy.
>>
>>960102
gotta go fast(and close, and sword.)
god i hope we can train swords with genji
>>
>>960133
pistols with mccree sounds like a better option.
>>
>>960139
Why not both?

There's a severe lack of Genji/McCree dialogue in the game.
>>
>>960122
Does it have to be shotgun burst? Can't it be a armor boost?
>>
>>960139
>>960133
There is absolutely no reason we can't do both
>>
>>960149
I like the shotgun option. gives us a good way to lash out after taking hits for a bit and could give us a good way to push forward even if we're a bit squishy.
>>
>>960149
that actually sound pretty good
it also makes us a great non squishy
and a bit of a offence/defence since we can defend others. if we had these in game though our weapons probably wouldn't be that great though, at least not the gun.
is it wrong that i want two ultimates? one for sword(omnislash) one for gun(fuck you laser cannon)
>>
>>960158
or because we have both, click shoot to shoot or alt get armor boost.
it would have to make you think tactically on weather you need armor or damage at that time
>>
>>960186
*we could have both
>>
>>960169
Maybe the extra gadget should be something that upgrades our gun and gives us a knockback.
Or we just use gravity gloves to push and shoot.
>>
>>960206
WAIT I HAVE AN IDEA!
Gravity bullets.
>>
>>960213
Zarya's gonna send us a cease and desist order.
>>
>>960169

>>
>>960213
yes for knock back
>>960206
here's what i got
after the shield end we could ether upgrade are gun with push back/lock on bullets or shoot them for good damage
we need to make our oc not op though
>>
i just realized that were basically a offence lucio combined with genji and a tiny bit of mcree
>>
Reinhardt actually hitting us would hurt like hell. we might actually be able to Tango with Reaper, neither of us gaining an advantage until the other slips up.

Would a charged up Symmetra or her turrets be able to handle us?
>>
>>960366
if it's in a corridor and we can use our mobility
and ya against two experienced players it's about whether or not reaper gets to close.
i could see reinhardt 2or 3 hitting us
>>
>>959994

>>960432
Anything is possible if you follow your dreams, anon.

As for matchups, our kit is not yet complete, so we don't know for sure. I think MC would be good at duelling other attackers at midrange, or bursting down supports and snipers after using grav boots to flank from an unexpected angle. But you'd be outgunned at range by Soldier or McCree, and like any other 200 health hero, if you get headshot by Reaper or hooked by Roadhog, you ded.

>>960481

>>959007
If we go by doto rules:

X amount of attacks for Y damage in a all targets at the point of casting, more targets means less damage dealt individually; it's the reason why Jugg is good for teamfights and solo
>>
>>960717
ssooooooo what would it be then?
i see the omni slash as a big wave of plasma
>>
>>960729
If you google omnislash it's basically teleporting around hitting one target repeatedly.
>>
>>960729
Teleporting and slashing shit, not sure how we can do that but we WILL find a way
>>
>>960745
i don't think we can teleport though.
in the animated one it shows the sword splitting into bits to. i just like the name and the pun that omnics and omni blade is all
>>
>>960764
We can just substitute teleporting for going fast. Like really fast
>>
>>960764
We can't teleport but we can use gravity shoes to basically bounce around at high speeds.
>>
>>960781
so basicly this is what happens
we GOTTA GO FAST with a light saber?
awesome
>>
>>960745
I don't really want an omnislash ult. I would rather have a sort of burst like Sombra, except a much smaller radius and we destroy all the armor on a character instead of shields.
>>
>>960793
id like a giant fucking laser sword beam
>>
>>960788
if this is it i vote we call it overload
because that's what we would do
we cant do it now because everything would blow up!
>>
>>960793
That's.. not a great move though. Maybe if it's a general debuff.

Not enough characters have high armor values for that to be worth it. It would fuck up Rein and D.va's days. Everyone else would be slightly miffed.
>>
>>960873
Throw a 100-150 damage after that on top of it?

a bit to good then
how about it just does a good amount of insta kill damage?
or it takes armour AND shields.
>>
>>960909
fuck

>>
My proposed ultimate:

Q: "Omnislash". Magnetically charge all enemies in the area, then dash between them striking with your sword.

Area: "Burst" similar to Sombra's EMP in shape, usage, and radius.

Effect: MC dashes between enemies, slashing up to 6 times in 0.4 second intervals for enhanced sword damage. Each slash targets a random enemy in the area. Invulnerable and untargetable during the effect.

Remember that Overwatch melee attacks cleave to hit multiple targets, meaning if your enemies are grouped in a ball due to Zarya ultimate ... welcome to cleave city.
>>
>>960958
> cleave city.
mmm me likey
>>
>>960958
what about a gun ultimate? is that even possible?

Tracer flops down in the pilot's seat of the Aurora, Overwatch's streamlined VTOL aircraft. You set yourself down in the co-pilot's seat. You look around at the complex controls. "Seems like a good ride," you comment.

"You betcha," says Tracer, flicking some switches on the ceiling control panel. "This baby's flown me to many a mission. She's like an old friend. Orright, let's get to it already. Next stop, Zurich, and my old friend the doc!"

The Aurora ascends with a less-than-smooth transition into the sky. You try to ignore the bumpy ride. Tracer looks over at you and grins. "Don't worry. I've flown this thing before without crashing, ohh, let's see ... at least once!"

>H-How many times have you flown and crashed?
>No problem.

"No problem ... wait, what was that last part? H-how many times have you flown and crashed?"

"Oh, I lost count of that a long time ago. But the second time wasn't my fault, I swear!" She grins, punches you on the shoulder. "Just kidding, luv. I used to be a test pilot for the RAF. They don't let you do that unless you can fly a little bucket like this upside down, backwards, and blindfolded. You can relax, put your feet up. We'll be in Switzerland soon."

"Okay, just ... don't do that anytime soon."

"Do wot?"

"Fly this upside down, backwards, and blindfolded. At least, not with me on it."

She laughs. "Deal."

You take a few moments to look out the window at the waters of the Mediterranean as Tracer sets her course and engages the autopilot. Once she's done, you ask her, "Have you been in touch with Mercy at all?"

"Ehhhh ... not really. Once or twice. Most of us Overwatch vets had a hard time staying in contact. Winston and I gave it our best to keep everyone together, but it was hard. None of us could be around each other without thinking of Jack and Gabriel, who we thought were dead." Tracer sighs. "It was a tough time for all of us, after we disbanded. Still is, tell the truth. We've just got to pick up and keep going."

>I'll do my best to help.
>What have you been doing with yourself since then?

"I still can't believe you let the U.N. just ... get rid of you like that. Like they were tossing an inconvenient piece of trash into the bin. Forgetting not only that you saved the world, but that the world only stayed that way because you were keeping the peace." You stare out the window, not seeing the ocean and sky, but instead that U.N. conference on holovid, all those years ago, when you watched Overwatch disbanded and declared illegal right in front of your eyes. Those men and woman in their expensive suits and smug smiles.

You look over at Tracer. She's looking out the window, thinking about what you said, letting the autopilot fly for her. "I can't believe it meself sometimes. It all happened so suddenly. The U.N. turning on us, passing the Petras Act. Zurich headquarters exploding. Jack and Gabriel gone. Without them and Ana, there was no one to lead us. Genji left for Nepal to "find himself", McCree said he'd got to return to America ... oh, I can't even rightly remember what order it all happened in, it all went so quickly, it's a blur in my memories. It seemed like one day we were heroes, and then the next, outlaws."

"Goddamn politicians and bureaucrats," you mutter. "Always looking for a scapegoat for the problems that they cause. And they chose the only thing that was really protecting people."

Tracer laughs, which seems odd. "What's so funny?" you ask her.

"Seems like you're angrier about it then I am, luv. Look, being mad about what happened won't help us now, orright? We've got to deal with wot's in front of us. We can worry about the U.N. later. They can't stop us from being what we are."

"And ... what is that?"

Tracer beams at you. "Why, heroes, of course. You'll see. It'll all work out right as rain."

The Aurora lands in a back lot of the Zurich airport. "Winston equipped this puppy with a whole set of fake transponder codes," Tracer explains. "The airport thinks we're a private jet from some rich fella from Numbani. We should be able to land at most major airports for now, until they figure out the trick."

You walk through the historic city of Zurich. Despite all the changes in the world, this city looks much as it has over the past several centuries.

Tracer takes you to the University Hospital of Zurich, where she says Mercy is employed these days as a researcher in biotics. The university staff, however, claims that Dr. Ziegler has taken a day of absence.

"I think I know where she might be," says Tracer ...

"Here we are," says Tracer. The two of you have arrived at what most people would describe as a ruin, or a trash pit. But you know better.

"This is ... Overwatch Headquarters, isn't it?"

"Sure is. This is ground zero. Everyone said nice things, that they were going to clean it all up, turn the site into some kind of memorial, but ..." She shrugs. "No-one ever did. Some people still come here. There isn't much to look at, but there's a lot of memories. I suspect we'll run into such a person here today."

The two of you explore the perimeter of the blast zone. Eventually you spy what you're looking for: a woman with her back turned to you, her hair a certain shade of blonde. She's looking out over the debris.

"That looks like her," agrees Tracer, after you point her out. "Dr. Angela Ziegler." She sighs, scratches her head. "Not really sure how I'm going to do this. This could be an awkward reunion."

How do you want to approach this?

It's probably more the situation and the timing. Like Tracer said, the HQ ruins has a lot of memories to it, and the reunion could be awkward.

"Let's try to be pragmatic about this," you say. "I'm not as involved in this as you are, so if you'd like, I can do the talking. I mean, as long as I don't go into fanboy mode. I had her action figure too, you know."

Tracer gives you a measuring look.

"No fanboy mode," you say. "Really. It's fine. I can do this."

The two of you approach Mercy. You were going to give her some time to finish her thoughts, if she was deep in mourning or contemplation. But she happens to turn around, right about when you planned to stop walking. She sees the two of you, and approaches hesitantly.

"Lena? Is that really you? And ... who's this with you?" she asks, looking at you quizzically.

Okay. You're going to be cool about this. Practical. No fanboy mode. You take a deep breath, open your mouth.

"DrZieglercanIjustsayyouareaninspirationtosomanypeopleIjustyouaresuchagoodpersonand-oof!!" You're cut off when Tracer elbows you hard in the ribs.

"What happened to "no fanboy mode"?" she asks you, annoyed.

"Sorry," you grunt, massaging your ribs.

Tracer meets eyes with Mercy. An awkward blush starts to creep into her cheeks. "Ummm. Hiya, Dr. Ziegler. It's been a while. This here is me new mate. He's a big fan of the team, as you can already see for yourself."

"I'm, er, pleased to make your acquaintance," Mercy says to you.

"Likewise," you say, straightening up. "Let me try that again. Dr. Ziegler. It's an honor to meet a founding member. I hope to make the team proud. Tracer tells me I'm the first recruit in quite some time."

After a moment, the implications sink in. Mercy raises a hand to her mouth in shock, then turns to Tracer. "So the rumors are true? You and Winston--?"

"Hehe. You betcha." Tracer grins. "You know me, Angie. Never could sit still for long. Winston's got one of the old Watchpoints up and running again. And we've even got a new recruit!" she adds, pointing to you. "How about that!"

"And so you came to me," sighs Mercy. "Does anyone else know about this?"

"We came to you first, luv. Right now it's just the three of us. Which is why we need you. Who else is going to keep us patched up when one of us mucks it up?"

Mercy shakes her head. "Lena, I have a life now. I have a job at the university hospital. Teaching medical students. Researching biotics. Even practicing medicine when I choose. I'm helping people, every day. I have responsibilities. I can't give those up." She turns away to look back at the ruins. "Not even for Overwatch."

The Paragons have the vote. Sorry Renegade bros, better luck next time. (New alignment: Paragon: 1, Renegade: 0)

"Dr. Ziegler," you say. "Mercy. If there's anything I know about you, it's that you want to help people. You want to heal them when they get hurt by this violent world. You do these things because you have a responsibility to these people ... but don't you have a broader responsibility? A higher calling? If you can help more, do more for the good of humanity on the battlefield, isn't that where you need to be?"

Mercy doesn't reply at first. She looks out at the ruins. You see her draw a deep breath, and turn towards you--

"How touching," you hear from behind you. A voice, sweetly feminine, cruelly cold. You turn around to see--

"Amelie?" asks Mercy. "Can it really be you?"

"Looking for you, Angela." says Widowmaker. Legendary assassin. Literally a cold-blooded killer. "Don't worry. I'm not here on official business. If I were, you wouldn't see me coming, would you?"

Tracer is furious. "What the hell are you on about, Widow? Think you can just show up here in civvies and have a nice chat?"

"Hello, mon cherie. I haven't seen you since, oh, let me see -- when was it?"

"London!" Tracer screams in her face. "When you shot Mondatta!"

"Of course," purrs Widowmaker. "How forgetful of me."

Mercy says, "What are you doing here, Amelie? Why now?"

"I came here, Angela, to warn you not to do anything stupid. But it seems it's too late for that. I find you talking with a foolish gerl, too blinded by her dreams to see reality. And ..." She looks at you, as if noticing you for the first time, and is impressed by absolutely nothing at all. The cold disdain of her frosty stare leeches the warmth from you. "Whatever zis is."

You're going to have to roll a d10 just to reply to that ...

>"Haven't you heard of me? I'm actually kind of a big deal."
>"Nice to meet you."
>"Why don't you get the hell out of here, before I make you?"

We don't know for sure if she was a hero or not. She was married to Overwatch's leader, whether as a fellow agent or a civilian, we're not sure.

Either way, she was kidnapped by Talon, brainwashed to kill her husband, and finally transformed into the assassin Widowmaker.

MC has done some good things for bad reasons, and some bad things for good reasons. Sometimes he got rich and gave it away. Other times he lost it all due to his own bad decisions. He wanted to be a good guy, but somewhere it all went wrong.

This is his chance to turn that around.
>>
Somehow you dredge from within yourself the mettle, not only to stand up to that icy glare but to meet it with a confident smirk. "Haven't you heard of me?" you say, casually hooking your thumbs into your belt loops. "I'm actually kind of a big deal."

Widowmaker's disdain intensifies. "Insect," she mutters, looking down her nose at you. "You mean nothing. Let me give you some advice, boy. Run away while you can. Go live your life somewhere else. Leave this one to her delusions. Let her search for death on her own. You can't help her. Don't get dragged down with her. The same goes for you, Angela," she adds. "You should be getting back to the university. Don't won't to be late for your class."

"Wot about me?" says Tracer, defiant. "Got some cutting final remark for me?"

Widowmaker looks at her, a cruel smile on her face. "You're not worth the effort, darling." She turns on her heel and walks off, disappearing into the crowd.

You think you might literally see steam coming off of Tracer. Her shoulders are tight, her fists tight with fury. Then suddenly all that anger deflates. She sighs, turns to Mercy. "Angie, look. I understand why you don't want to get mixed up in all this again. You've got a hospital full of people who need your help. And askin' you to trade that all in for blood 'n' glory is, well ... I can't ask you to--"

"I'll do it," says Mercy, quiet but firm.

"A-are you sure?" asks Tracer, suddenly unsure herself. "I mean, Widow threatened--"

Mercy says something in German which you're pretty sure is quite rude.

"Angie!" Tracer says. "I never knew you to use such language."

"Seeing her reminded me. Both of the woman she used to be, and of who she is now. Who will help people like her? Who will stop others from suffering as she has ... if not for me?"

"Great, but we should probably get out of here. In case Widow wasn't alone."

"I take your point," says Mercy.

"Also, shouldn't we check ourselves for trackers or bugs? In case she planted something."

"Winston's got a sweeper for those in the Aurora," says Tracer. "No problem."

The three of you walk away from the ruins, toward the city street.

"Can you teach me to swear in German?" you say, falling into step beside Mercy. "Whatever you said back there was amazing."

She laughs, and for a moment you're awestruck by her beauty. This is really THE Mercy, here right in front of you. The purity of her skin, the way her hair -- no! None of that, you tell yourself. Calm thoughts. You wonder if she has some kind of device that tells her just how fast your heart is beating right now.

"Thank you," she says. "I don't make a habit of it, but German swearing can be most impressive, can't it? Perhaps I'll teach you one or two of my favorites."

"Great. Hey, I'm sorry about, you know. Earlier. I'm guessing I'm not the first Overwatch fanboy to ramble a little when he met you. I had your action figure when I was a kid, you know? And now here you are, right in front of me. It's kind of surreal. But I promise, I'm a cool guy once you get to know me. And I won't let you, or the team, down."

"I believe you," says Mercy, smiling. "Do your best out there, and if you get hurt, I'll be ready. From now on, I'll be taking care of you."

As an English-speaking Canadian and a German-speaking Swiss, you'd probably each know enough French to have a very basic conversation. That and you tend to pick up some travelling the globe.

Mercy needs some time to set her things in order at the University Hospital and get her Valkyrie suit out of storage. She'll arrange for transport to Watchpoint Gibraltar when that's done. So it's just you and Tracer climbing back into the Aurora at the end of the day.

"I think that went well," says Tracer, pressing the button that closes the hatch. "Bit of a rude surprise running into my least favorite blue-skinned assassin. But we got Mercy back on the team! Woohoo!" She pumps her fist in victory.

"A successful first mission for the two of us," you say, taking the co-pilot's seat.

"Heck yeah it was!" she says, thumping down in the pilot's seat. "Give me a high five, partner."

You reach across and slap hands with her. "Now let's go get Reinhardt," you say. "Once we have him back, we can celebrate properly, you know what I mean? Can't have a party without Reinhardt. I imagine you've got some pretty good stories about him at parties?"

"I wouldn't even know where to begin, mate," she says. She begins keying in the Aurora's ignition sequence. "He had some amazing drinking contests with Torbjorn. The big guy could handle more volume, but Torbjorn's stomach could handle just about any chemical or nanite solution known to science."

While Tracer takes off, you think about how to approach this question. Eventually you just ask her straight out. "Tell me about Widowmaker. Are the stories true? About her, Overwatch, and ... Talon?"

Tracer's expression doesn't change, but you notice her hands tighten on the flight stick. "Not sure what you heard, but that part's true enough. One of our strike commanders was a man, name of Gerard Lacroix. Our best agent against Talon. They tried to take him down, again and again, but each time he outsmarted them, or outfought them, and kept after them. Eventually they tried a different strategy. Went after his wife. Kidnapped her. When we found her, unharmed, we thought nothing was wrong ..." Tracer shakes her head. "Couldn't have known, I tell myself. No way to know."

"What happened?" you say.

"She killed Gerard," she says. "In his sleep. She was still human then, just brainwashed. But when her instructions were complete, she returned to Talon. And they did something to her. Something to her heart. That's what turned her skin blue like that. That's why she doesn't feel pain, or fear, or sadness. So she can kill with no remorse."

"Damn," you say. "That's some pretty heavy stuff."

"Yeah."

"Well. Mercy said something about helping people like her. Who knows? Maybe someday she can undo whatever Talon did to her." You watch the mountains of Switzerland pass by underneath you. "Whatever happens. Mercy's going to be with us now, so I feel a lot safer. Less likely to die horribly, you know? I can do stupid things and not worry so much. What I mean is, I'm glad to have her on the team."

"Yeah," says Tracer. "Me too. Now let's go fetch me old pal Reinhardt. And like you say. Once we get back to the Watchpoint, we can have a proper party."
