You are Tony Starbrine, Meister trainee at the DWMA, wielder of two probationary weapon partners (Shinobu the Silver Shield and Kia the Obsidian Spear), and recent kisser of girls.

Seriously, you can't get that sensation out of your head whenever you let your mind wander. You're pretty sure Kia knows about it by now, but she's acting like nothing is wrong. You hope she isn't hurt by it, though your instincts tell you things are probably okay. In any case, your life is busy enough lately that you don't have a lot of free time to think over it much.

During classes, Satoru is whipping you all into fighting shape. He has you running laps around the Academy, doing various combinations of pull-ups, sit-ups, and push-ups, and weight training. He always pushes you to do one more set than you did before, or to push out a faster time than last time, but he has a good eye for when you've reached your limit. There are no injuries during this time, which he claims is a first for him. You particularly felt like you imroved your

Also, Satoru helped you all with training your Soul's capacity, by using a strange type of water. He poured a small paper cup full for each of you, and told you to insert one finger at a time, and to stop when you felt tired. During this, Grayson was knocked out, and Asuka nearly fainted as well. You did all right, and feel like you can Soul Boost on your own without running out of gas, though doing anything else with your soul, like Resonance, will still drain you.

Soul increased by + to a total of +++

Lastly, you learned more mundane things about the world, though it isn't a primary focus.

INT increased to +++

Satoru also offered to train you one-on-one...

Satoru brings you into a training room. You've been in these before, but Satoru seems to have something in mind, and that has you curious and worried. He pulls a couple folding chairs out and motions for you to sit, which you do.

"Tony, I'm here to offer you some help. You don't really need help in any of the ways that the other students do. In fact, you're something of a prodigy. However, you have two very dangerous roads ahead of you, and I'd like to provide what assistance I can."

You scratch the back of your head, unsure of where he's going with this. "Uh, I'm not following you, Sir."

Satoru sighs. "Well, you seem to want to wield two Demon Weapon partners at once. That's going to take some intense focus, and a lot of training with the two of them. I can help with learning to focus, blocking out distractions and stray thoughts that can interfere with connecting your souls. It's a bit of a higher-level thing, but you're probably ready. Of course, it only works with one partner. You'll just have to focus on the other one."

He pulls a cigarette out of his shirt pocket, puts it between his lips, and continues.

"Or, I can help you practice your abilities as a Witch... well, male witches are called Sorcerers or Wizards, take your pick. I know a bit of the basics regarding casting magic. You'll have to meditate a bit, and then we'll figure out what your natural magic wants to do so we can learn to direct it properly."

He leans forward, eyes glinting. "So, which sounds better?"

You think about it for a while... Well, you'll probably learn how to maintain your connection eventually anyways... Might as well see about getting in touch with your heritage.

"I'd like to learn about magic, please."

Satoru grins. "I thought as much. Well, first off, you have to figure out what sort of animal your magic is tied to. This is something you're born with, and it can affect how you incant your spells." To do that, you're gonna need to look deep within your soul. Sit on the floor, in front of me here, and do what I do."

Satoru sits cross-legged on the floor, and you join him. He places his hands, palms up, lightly on his knees, and takes a deep breath. You mimic him.

"Now, close your eyes. Picture your soul. Your soul is yellow, by the way."

You can see it, a yellow orb with a flickering, flame-like protrusion at the top. You nod.

"Now, push your way into it. Feel your body entering, like a warm bath, and look around for the part that feels different from the rest. Relax, and let yourself..."

Satoru's voice trails off, and your perception of the outside world fades away...

Your eyes snap open. You appear to be sitting on the bed in your dorm, but the walls...

One side of the walls is familiar... that wallpaper is like the one on the walls of your childhood home. You can barely remember it, but that's definitely what it looked like. Faintly grey with swirl patterns. The other side of the room looks like... a cardboard box? Ah, you slept in plenty of those. Is this.. is this your soul?

"Correct. Welcome!"

You flinch back at the voice. It seems to have come from a small girl with light purple hair... She looks to be about 5 or 6, in a white sun dress, and her eyes... they're blue, like yours.

"Hello Tony! I was wondering when you'd visit. I mean, we already know each other, sort of, but I've been wanting to talk to you!"

"Uh... Hi? Who are you?" You're taken aback by this, but you suppose it isn't THAT much weirder than anything else you've dealt with at the DWMA.

"I'm... you, I guess? A part of you! Or perhaps you're a part of me?" She giggles. "Call me Orchid, if you must give me a name."

You look around again, trying to not let your bewilderment overcome you. "So... what are you doing in my soul?"

She plops down on the bed next to you, kicking her bare feet. "I live in here! Always have, to some extent. Now, a better question is, what sort of magic do you want to learn?"

You think for a moment.

"I'm not sure... If you're a part of me or whatever, you should have an idea of what's good. Surprise me."

Orchid closes her eyes, then smiles.

"I have the perfect idea for you. First, I'll teach you about what we are. Our animal aspect is the Mantis: Quick, brutal, and efficient. This spell will enhance all of this. To cast it, you must encant the spell: Mant, Mantis, Mantids. Mant, Mantis, Mantids. Repeat that now."

You feel a bit silly, but you comply. "Mant, Mantis, Mantids."

Orchid frowns. "Keep going."

You repeat the incantation, and you feel the room around you slipping away...

Suddenly you're back in front of Satoru. He looks worried.

"Tony, you okay? You suddenly shook all over."

You shake your head, adapting to being back in reality. "I'm... okay, I think. How long was I out?"

Satoru gives you a curious look. "Out? It's only been a few seconds. Did you learn anything?"

You decide to tell Satoru exactly what you experienced. He's going out of his way to help you, after all. Don't want to ruin his trust.

"Is it normal to meet a little girl in your head when you meditate?"

Satoru's mouth hangs open, letting the cigarette fall out. "No, though it isn't unheard of to converse with a representation of your psyche. You talked to a little girl?"

"Yeah. She told me I was a mantis, and said she'd teach me a spell, though I'm not sure what it does."

Satoru sits still for a moment, thinking. "Huh. Well, I'm not a Sorcerer, so I can't say whether that's normal for your type, but let's give that spell a shot."

You both stand and enter a fighting pose. You incant the spell...

"Mant, Mantis, Mantids. Mant, Mantis, Mantids. Mant, Mantis, Mantids..."

You finish the spell and look around... Nothing seems to be different.

Satoru looks curious. "Anything?"

You shake your head. "Maybe we should spar, see if I notice anything then?"

Satoru nods, and charges towards you. You note that he isn't using his full power...

You stand in a defensive position, ready to block his fist that is aimed at your head... but something in your head sounds an alarm, and you feel your arm move, almost on it's own, to deflect a second simultaneous punch to your gut. Satoru immediately spins in a roundhouse kick, which you manage to just duck under, after getting the same feeling.

"I think I figured it out, sir." You hold up your hands to indicate you wish to stop. "I'm getting these flashed of insight... it's helping me predict your moves better. If I used this in actual combat..." You trail off, thinking of the possibilities.

Satoru laughs. "That sounds extremely useful, indeed! Just don't rely on it in class. Gotta train to be as sharp as you can without magic as a crutch, but I give you leave to practice the spell any other time within Death City."

I do say. Calculation magic generally strengthens, expands, lengthens the duration of, and generally supports the casting of other magic. Say you wanted to make an illusion of an entire town, including walls that feel solid. With just an illusion spell, you'd be able to set it up, but it wouldn't last very long once you finish the casting. If you used calculation magic on it, you could make it last a lot longer, reinforce the illusion to be more realistic, and so on. Think Metamagic feats from Dungeons and Dragons. The only caveat for calculation magic is that you need to be really good at math. See the picture.

---------------SESSION RESUMED----------------

During these weeks of hard training, you worked at your part-time job, manning the counter at Dressed to Kill. Trevor was a good boss, if aloof, and when you asked about a formal outfit for the Ball, he quoted you a pretty affordable price for a few options. He did say that, if you want it made in time, you'd have to order something soon, as he's going to be swamped in orders by the end of next month. You still have 2500 bucks sitting in your possession.

>Regular three-piece suit and tie, costs 500 bucks
>Combat-capable three-piece suit and tie, costs 850 bucks
>Don't buy one yet.

Also, you debated whether or not to tell Shinobu and Kia about getting a dress made. On the one hand, they'd probably appreciate knowing, but on the other, you'd probably be forced to ask one to be your date, and... you're still not sure when the shoe is gonna drop regarding your kiss with Shinobu.

>Tell Shinobu about getting a dress
>Tell Kia about getting a dress
>Tell both of them about getting a dress
>Stay quiet about it, don't wanna disrupt things.

Finally, you spent your small amount of free time with one or two people aside from your partners, who you regularly interacted with at meals and during class.

You are eating lunch with Kia and Shinobu, as usual, and you can't help but turn the idea of telling them about the Ball over in your head. You want to take both of them, of course, because they're your partners (and only for that reason, definitely), but... you can't help but worry that it'll prompt a conversation about that night... You clench your fist and shake off the fear. You have to do this, and it isn't like you can avoid it forever.

"Hey, guys, so... have you heard about the Winter Ball?" You start as nonchalantly as possible.

Kia's eyes light up. "YES! I've been looking forward to going for my whole life! I mean, my dad always had these great stories about trying to see Lord Death eating, or how he'd catch students trying to sneak off to dark corners by themselves..." She's positively sparkling, thinking about it.

Shinobu looks down at her plate. "So, it's like a school dance? I've... never been good at those."

Kia has already thrown an arm around her shoulder. "Oh, come on! We'll be there together! I'll make sure you have the night of your life!"

You gulp. If they're going together...

Kia's eyes meet your own. "And this big strong man is gonna be our date, right?"

You blink. "Uh... both of you?"

Kia nods. "Why not? I mean, we already want to see if we can make things work as a dual-wield thing, so we should go as a unit!"

You sigh. That's what she meant. Maybe she doesn't know after all... Kia suddenly gets up and presses her lips very close to your ear

"Just remember, you owe me~"

Yup, she knows. And she's not mad. You thought that would make things easier, but... now you're worried for an entirely different reason. This is gonna make it so much easier for her to tease you.

"A-anyways, you two should come by my work at some point and make orders for something to wear. Apparently if you don't get it in soon, it might not get done in time. Also, I'd suggest splurging for something combat-ready. Trevor can make some amazing stuff. I saw him working on a full ballroom gown that he says will not only hold up in a fight, but will stay in place, protecting the wearer's modesty. I'll even pay for the extra cost, if you guys want."

Kia shakes her head. "No need, I'll bring Shinobu down... on a day you AREN'T working. Gotta keep it a surpriiiiiiiise~" Shinobu nods. "I... I think that would be best. I want to see your shocked expression when we show ourselves off."

Well. That went much better than you thought.

You're just leaving work one night, when you notice Grayson leaning against a wall nearby. You decide to go see what he's up to, since he doesn't seem to be waiting for you.

"Grayson? What are you doing here?" You give your dorm mate a fist bump as you draw close.

He sighs. "Asuka's in there." He gestures towards Deathbucks. "I thought I'd pretend to be in the area and offer to walk her back to the Academy, but... I don't know if I can do it. She's totally not interested."

You pat his beefy shoulder. "Maybe you're not presenting yourself properly? I mean, she seems to be from a wealthy, proper family. Maybe you're a bit too... forward?"

He glances back at the cafe. "Yeah, maybe. It's all I'm really got at, though. I don't know how to be smooth like you."

That makes you pause. You don't consider yourself to be all that good with girls, but... You do sort of have two of them attached to you lately. Guess he has a point.

"Look, man, maybe I can help you with a different approach."

Grayson's face lights up. "You would do that? You're the best, bro."

Hmm... Does she have a thing for the waiter, or just for having a butler/servant in general?
>>
>>956156
>find out she has a thing for well-dressed servant guys
we can tell grayson to buy a nice outfit like that and surprise her at the ball
>>
You smile a little. You have an idea. "What's wrong, Asuka? You seem to be interested in that waiter..."

Asuka's eyes snap back to you. She's blushing a bit more noticeably now. "What? No! I... I was just looking at the uniform! It's really well made, is all..."

You lean back. "All right, I'll stop bullying you about it. Although, speaking of fancy dress... Have you heard about the Winter Ball yet?"

Asuka clears her throat. "Yes, I have. I was actually considering having something made for it at your place of employment."

You shrug. "Trevor would appreciate the business, and he can even make it combat-capable. I'd say it's worth it. However..." You lock eyes with her. "You planning on going with anyone?"

Asuka's blush returns, though she doesn't react otherwise. "No, I haven't thought about it at all. Why?"

You shrug. "I was just curious. I know Grayson really likes you."

Asuka scoffs. "That meathead? Please. He'll get bored of me and wander off to some other pretty face soon enough."

Hm.

>Be honest with her. "I think he really does like you. He's even asked me for advice."
>Be indirect. "Well, he's also loyal, passionate, and ambitious."
>Divert her attention. "I bet he's clean up nice in one of these uniforms.

see if we can't push the two ideas togeather to open her up more to suggestions.

Gotta pause again guys, I'll be back later on tonight to finish this up, but I've run out of time currently.

Vote and discuss, if you want to. I'm really happy you decided to help Grayson out here, though. He's a good guy.

He's easily one of the best EAT options. You wouldn't want to go with a... NOT student, would you?!

>I don't think Grayson is as much of a 'meathead' as you might think. He just seems to struggle to express himself in other ways.

Supporting this as well. Explain to her that he's not a bad guy, just kind of terrible at coming across as anything other than a meathead.

Anyone know how to archive the thread? Since it seems likely QM might not be back for a while, with Christmas coming up and all.

I'm alive

I'm sorry I didn't come back. I had Christmas things to do that took WAY too long, plus everyone seems to be getting sick one after another.

As an apology, have another pastebin

http://pastebin.com/NYHvHAii

It's not my best work, but it does establish where Kia's head is at lately.

Enjoy the fluffy stuff while it lasts, there's some shit coming down the pipe

I might continue the thread in a bit if I feel up to it. I wanna close this chapter out before I start running my other quest on the 2nd. This one will still be the main one, but I wanna do a second one to avoid burning myself out on this one.
