Its been a month since you stole 300000 nuyen from Msr. Dube and made off with the Goryo car in the warehouse. Sadly, its not the stunt car, but the model used in the "safer" racing scenes. Theoretical top speed of almost 200 MPH, functional top speed of 120 MPH. Fred's given the car a subtle red paint-job and altered the holotags to display a scene of a man meditating on a rock near a clear pool fed by a waterfall, surrounded by sakura trees, all animated in a classical Japanese calligraphic style. Could easily pass as the ride of a Renraku sarariman with more nuyen than sense.

You've managed to keep yourself busy during the past month. You spent a few days in and out of your body, tripping into the Astral Plane in search for answers to whatever... force, is interfering with your dreams. You started in the shallows, poking around the Metaplane of Man and its underworld, the Id. Then you started pressing further out. Kadath's frozen chambers, worn, ancient spirals that eat through the Metaplane of Earth- even questing into the infinite library of Cealano for answers to this, and to other, more troubling revelations. You managed to recover a photocopy of an ancient Arabian text that has shed unsettling light on the APEX Virus, but nothing you have translated thus far has been directly relevant to your problem: many of the ur-gods of the Deep Metaplanes can warp the dreams of mortals, but normally, these incidents are more mind-shattering.

You took Sudo along with you to Cealano. Perhaps not the wisest decision, but you have been trying to bond with him over these weeks. He is an eager student, receptive to your teachings. Perhaps, even TOO eager: he reminds you of yourself, when you started on your journey. You have made a note to keep an eye on him. To break up the monotony, he's been teaching you the ins-and-outs of Galactic Conquest. The game has surprising strategic and political depths, with the game's history filled with betrayals of as much intricacy and subtlety as any political plot in meatspace.

You've also, to your distaste, been spending time with Rhun. Contrary to your initial expectations, her expertise in history isn't merely an affectation: her knowledge of the subject equals, if not surpasses, your own. As a "thank-you", she's been teaching you the basics of unarmed combat and improving your knifework. You consider any form of thanks that ends with you covered in bruises in poor taste- as you said to Rhun, your preferences do not run that way- but you hold a new respect for her abilities as a warrior AND a scholar.

A couple weeks ago, your group went to Austin to intercept a package in the possession of the Human Dignity Party on behalf of Novatech. 2.4 million was offered for this package. After tracking it down to a ship headed to Tampa and intercepting it with the help of Tizona's pirate crew, your team managed to discover that the package contained a revolutionary technology: a lobotomized AI you have named Pygmalion, capable of producing subliminal messaging that, over time, is as effective as traditional methods of conditioning. Fortunately, its GPS chip was damaged in the firefight to retrieve it, so your team was able to claim it was destroyed by the enemy to avoid its recapture. It is currently in a secret location only Sudo and you know of, that can only be opened with both of your biometrics. Part of you is considering destroying it: as a joint project between NEONet and the Horizon Project, this thing is wanted by 2 Big Ten corps. The rest of you has serious qualms with killing Pygmalion: it seems to be wholly ignorant that what it was designed for is a profound crime against humanity.

Capturing an AI wasn't the only interesting thing that happened on that run. First, you managed to meet Barbie's brother, Lancelot, in person, along with his group. On a superficial level, he was charming, funny, and affable: beneath that, you saw someone who had crossed the sanity event horizon and was STILL ACCELERATING. You worry about the effect his mix of a demagogue's charisma and an asylum escapee's crazed worldview will have on the world.

You and Barbie also got... intimate, during a Thunderbird migration. You aren't quite sure what happened, to make your usual cold distance from matters of the heart melt with her. You also aren't sure if it was a good idea, since she seems to believe it meant something... much more than you had intended.

You think about all of this as you wait for your soykaf to finish brewing. Once its done, you take your mug and start thinking about how to start your day.

Welcome to Shadowrun Occultist Quest!

>What is Shadowrun?

Shadowrun is an RPG series set in the world of 2072, 60 years after "The Awakening", the return of magic, spirits, and fantasy races into the world. Metahumanity now lives in a world of advanced technology and magic, where megacorporations are above the laws of nations and one-third of all humanity have no legal rights. Crime and corruption run amok, and mercenary operatives known as "shadowrunners" ply their services to both the criminal underworld, and to the very corporations that officially fight against them.

>How are success and failure determined?

A number of d6's are rolled equal to the relevant attribute+the relevant skill. 5's and 6's are successes, and the dice are rolled against a target threshold (1 for something trivial; 6 for a highly difficult /intricate task. 10 for something next-to-impossible). Each 6 rolled results in one additional die being rolled in the pool. Results are as follows:

Target number of successes is met: the action is a success.

Target number of successes is not met: the action is a failure.

Target number of successes is met, but more 1's are rolled than any other number in the pool: a "glitch" occurs: a minor outside complication arises that prevents success.

Target number of successes is not met and more 1's are rolled than any other number: critical glitch. Your actions fail in a way that is potentially disastrous for your long-term goals or your health.

You will have 2 points of Edge each "session" that you can spend to tip the scales in your favor. When requesting an action, you may specify that you want to spend a point of Edge to add "luck" or "effort" to a roll. "Luck" will add five dice to the roll's pool (great for situations where Redd is forced to work out of his depth). "Effort" will re-roll all failed dice on a roll if it does not meet the threshold, glitches, or critically glitches (the point will be refunded if none of these happen). This is good when you are playing to Redd's strengths, but want to make sure you don't botch something.

Good luck, and remember the fundamentals of shadowrunning:

>Shoot straight!

>Conserve ammo!

>Never make a deal with a dragon!

>Rhun "Hela'R Dryw" map Gaelwynn
A short, toned, and angry Welshwoman who serves as your crew's close-combat expert and recon gal. Has enough chrome and bioware in her body that she could probably tank a fall from the 10th floor of a skyraker into an acid vat. Against all odds, holds a Master's degree in Welsh History. Likes: Parkour, sex, narcotics, alcohol, swordfighting, Welsh autonomy from the UK, Lofwyr (The CEO of Saeder-Krupp), Saeder-Krupp. Dislikes: The English, the Irish, the Scottish, Tir Elves, "wankers", people who don't like Lofwyr or Saeder-Krupp. Is trying to quit Bliss.

>Rex Stirling
A Chicago native and former cleaner for Saeder-Krupp, now demoted to shadowrunning due to a series of unwise decisions that started with a decision to do a hit-and-run on the leader of a major street gang. A veteran of the Sinai Shadow Operations of 2065. Consummate professional (apart from the hit-and-run) and a hard, hard man. Likes: clean runs, gray suits, the Chicago Shatterers Urban Brawl team, and "Pacey Rae", his Gauss rifle. Dislikes: Messy runs, being double-crossed, "wizard bullshit", you. Has some unresolved trauma from the Sinai.

>Sudo Morphus/"N0b0dy"

The crew's decker. Used to just be an IT nerd, until S-K got leverage on him for redirecting spam-mail from one of their subsidiaries back to said subsidiary's servers. You have the closest relationship to him our of anyone on the team. Suffers from Sudden Unexplained Resurgent Genetic Expression (SURGE), which gives him oily, bright-green scales instead of skin, along with a tail. Likes: MMO gaming, decking, the occult, "me time", you (in a platonic way). Dislikes: violence, being overworked, Rhun, himself. Mildly depressed.

>Tizona Cortez

An ex-pirate technically-nun, Tizona Cortez is your group's mage. She channels the power of God to smite your enemies and bring down the heretic government of Aztlan (formerly Mexico). Lives apart from the rest of the crew, in a convent in Charlotte. Likes: Jesus, helping the unfortunate, low-riders, sangria, Marlboros, fire, killing Aztlanti. Dislikes: heresy, blasphemy, apostasy, hangovers, Aztechnology, The Aztlanti, being ordered to spare the Aztlanti.

>"Barbie"/Lenore Lancester
Not a part of your crew, but a close associate. A total ditz when it comes to anything but fashion, smoothies, and calculating the thousands of variables needed to make the perfect sniper shot. Over 40 confirmed kills. Color-coordinates her duffel bags with her outfit. Suprisingly nice for a professional sniper. Does her work to help out her large family. Likes: fashion magazines, shopping, smoothies, small animals, her BFF Rhun, killing "bad guys". Dislikes: white after labor day, socks and sandals, unnecessary violence, reading.

You make some shitty substitute eggs and waffles and walk into the living room.

Rex and Rhun are there- and, much to your surprise, so is Sudo. As you walk in, you catch the tail end of a conversation:

"...Why the hell would these 'Hegemony' guys still use 21st-century tank technology when everyone else doesn't? The Strigoi have those flying boat things, the Jing have levitating tanks, the Technocracy has their glowey Rubik's Cubes..."

""Because they had a huge period of time where their technology backslid worse than when Rhun took me to that club... and because it attracts the kind of people who wank off to the military *cough* Ares *cough*".

Rhun: "Wha' I've always wundered is, what's the fecking deal with the Strigoi? Are they vampires, or magic, or what? I've only ever seen their art, and it all looks like some Post-Post-Industrial music trid combined with some skeevy ghoul-themed porno."

"Thank you for that.. image, Rhun... They're the 'edgy' faction. An entire civilization that fell to not!HMHVV. They can be dangerous, but if you know what you're doing, you can outmaneuver them. Though they are, without a doubt, the best ambushers in the game. One second you're drifting through a debris field, next thing you know they're tearing into your ship to get inside. Literally."

>Perception: Rhun looks healthier than you've seen her in a long while. She's even drinking water, and not beer, with her hamburger! Rex appears to be eating an MRE. Sudo is eating an omelet that looks like it came off of the cover of a food mag.

Too late, you notice Sudo opening his mouth.

"Actually, you aren't, Rhun. You're covered in contusions, some of them appear to be actively hemorrhaging, and if you aren't careful, you might burst one of them or have to deal with a subdural infection."

Sudo take a sip from his orange juice.

"Plus, you're shaking. You don't shake."

Rhun looks up, and for a second, you aren't sure if she's going to hit Sudo, or just start crying: "Yeah, well fancy medical doctor you are you shoulda noticed they're clotted up, and the bruises are mostly on my ass. I'm just kinda... out of it from Dallas. It was 18 hours long. I tried to argue that I should get to be on top for the night and they had other ideas. It was fun for a while but they never let me go and were way too rough on me. Okay? Are you happy? They hung me from the ceiling for three hours like I was a piñata when they found out I used Bliss, said this was my punishment for it and to never touch it again or they'd come find me. The night started as just a bit of a kinky night out, but they gagged me and didn't let me use the safeword. I'm sorry for getting abused okay!? I knew them from the rave, and we got along well and I thought I'd be safe. I'm sorry. I'm all healed from it though."

Anyone want to inform me about the metaplanes and the astral plane. The Shadowrun wiki doesn't tell a lot.(the lore bits written so far in this quest were very good.)
>>
>>947772
I'll write up a primer when I can.
>>
>>947772

As QM, here's my summary. Prime Runner Anon (here: >>947886 ), feel free to correct me.add on if you want:
>AETHEROLOGY 101, OR: MAGIC FOR DUMMIES.

>THE ASTRAL PLANE

One of the most commonly-asked questions by people interested in the mechanics of magic is "What is the Astral Plane?" In order to answer that question, you first have to understand what MANA is. Mana is the magical energy all magicians manipulate to cast spells, and exists in a layer around the planet, not unlike the ozone layer, called the MANASPHERE. The Manasphere is what allows for magical phenomena and supernatural creatures to exist on Earth. An important thing to know about mana is that, through a process not fully understood by modern thaumaturgy, it is only generated by living beings. This means that environments completely without life, such as the vacuum of space, cause magic to fail and supernatural entities to cease to exist.

The Astral Plane is a construct created by the Manasphere that overlaps the physical world. It is in this space that dual-natured creatures (those beings that are both physical and magical) have their magical element, and in which spirits exist outside of their native metaplanes. Magicians can also access the Astral Plane though a process known as Astral Projection: the disconnect of their soul from their body to explore the Astral Plane.

>THE ASTRAL SEA

The Astral Sea is a substrate of pure mana that exists "underneath" the material world. Little is known the Astral Sea, due to the simple fact that without a few exceedingly rare or difficult methods, a soul can easily be destroyed or lost forever in the Astral Sea. Metaplanes exist in the Astral Sea, islands of order in the sea of raw magic.

>METAPLANES

Metaplanes are mystical planes that exist in the Astral Sea. There are two kinds of metaplanes. The more commonly-known ones, the Shallow Metaplanes, are reflections of aspects of the material world (the Metaplane of Fire is a blazing inferno, the Metaplane of Water is an endless ocean, the Metaplane of Faerie is a haunting reflection of human creativity, the Metaplane of Man resembles various afterlives, depending on who enters the plane, etc.). It is from this place that most spirits are summoned, and in which the Patrons that favor magicians and adepts dwell. The number of "shallow" Metaplanes are as numerous as human concepts, with burgeoning micro-metaplanes of high technology gestating in the Sea. The sole exception to this is the Matrix, which seems to be tapping into its own, new form of occult power.
The "Deep" Metaplanes are realms of strange and alien concepts that exist far beyond the "shallows" of the Astral Sea. Beyond the Hive, the domain of the monstrous insect-spirits, little of the Deep Metaplanes seem to align with direct concepts of this world. The Deep Metaplanes are dangerous realms of ancient knowledge and horrors.

Rhun clearly isn't interested in talking to you, so you decide to spend today trying to translate the codex.

The book is written in a mixture of ancient languages and arcane ciphers. You've reached a chapter that you believe might finally give you your answers.

>8 hours later

You've cracked the cipher on this chapter!
The chapter appears to be a semi-coherent treatise on the nature of dreams and revelations, and how they are intrinsically linked to the motion of the Astral Sea. It also speaks of "Great leviathans who slumber in the depths, whose awakening shall cause the Earth to fall from its axis with its shaking."

It also describes the construction of ancient "dream-observatories", utilized by magicians of a time before the current cycle of history to study the forces of dreams.

Several sketches of these observatories and a map of their locations in relation to the modern world are included- penned, apparently, by a later hand.

The map appears to be an old print-out (judging by your eyes, dating back to the 1970's or 1980's) of the Mercator Projection, with various marks and notes made on it in the same code as the rest of the chapter. 11 different sites are listed:

You managed to recover a photocopy of an ancient Arabian text that has shed unsettling light on the APEX Virus, but nothing you have translated thus far has been directly relevant to your problem: many of the ur-gods of the Deep Metaplanes can warp the dreams of mortals, but normally, these incidents are more mind-shattering.

It's got a lot of details that will be important, since we had a month-long timeskip and had a run and managed to annoy two of the Big Ten, and ended up sleeping with Barbie.
I would like to reiterate that we apparently slept with the potentially yandere sniper with a the insane demagogue brother.

I'm leery about posting on Jackpoint because as much as it could help us, it could also put targets on our back if the notes on the Codex are true and there are organizations and societies out there who defend these sites as sources of power (of course there are).

As an aside, does anyone on the team act as a medic, or does Tizona pull White Mage duty?
I'm wondering if I should bother getting the Bullets and Bandages supplement.

Sudo almost got his MD before his past caught up with him, but Tizona can also heal through the power of LAYING ON HANDS!

A brief summary of Tizona's spells:

Heal Wounds (traditional "laying on hands")

Levitate (Usually has a faint glowing aura while she does this.)

Compel Truth (If the person tries to lie, they vomit up a frog or lizard.)

Increase Inherent Limits (Tizona sanctifies the target by flicking sacred oil on them)

Suggestion (If you've seen/read Preacher, its The Voice, only less bloody literal-minded and OP)

Fireball (Said ball of fire glows gold with the light of God)

Mass Blindness (A bright flash of light emanating from her that blinds the unbeliever)

Slay Aztlanti (Powerful kill-spell that, if lethal, drags the target bodily into Hell (or rather, Id). Only works on people who are half or more Aztlanti and are not devout Catholics).

These constructions, known as "Oneiric Lacunae", appear to be known to the Atlantean Foundation, housed in Atlanta: "Initially believed to have been an unique construct by the Atlantean precursor culture, this structure was assumed to only exist at the New Atlantis site (located off the coast of Haiti). However, the expedition to the Shambala site (located in the Himalayan Mountains) uncovered a virtually identical building. These two lacunae were believed to be "paired" for unknown purposes.

It appears that the knowledge in the Utterances of Hassan is not known to the Atlantean Foundation- and this is probably for the best, given their mysterious motives for uncovering Atlantean technology.

Sudo is slumped in the family room, drinking soda while watching "The Thing" on Chiller Classics.

"Hey, Redd!"

"Hey... how's Rhun doing?"

"Well, I gave her some medication and a hot towel treatment, but... you're more qualified for the other stuff."

He glances towards the bedroom hallway, and you take the hint.

You knock on the door to Rhun's room, and call out.

"Rhun? May I come in?"

"Y-yeah. Come on in."

The interior of Rhun's room is a mess. A number of swords are mounted on one wall underneath a holo of the Welsh flag. Another is occupied by a shelf of historical reference texts. A miniature medevil township is set up in a corner. Holographic serfs go about their daily labors in their little world of plastic molds and holographic crops. A label on the side says "Dr. Wondertainment's Magic Village: Cardiff Model!™"

Rhun is sitting on her bed, a blanket over her head, looking at a box of some kind.

"So, uh Redd... did yeh want to talk some more about the Mabinogion? Or perhaps some Thucydides?"

>Perception: you can see she's fiddling with some kind of collar and muzzle in the box.
>Judge Intentions: She's emotionally drained, but trying to keep up a brave front.

"Sure, if that IS what you want to talk about..."

"I... I don't even know what I wanna talk about..."

You spend a minute in silence, just staring at each other.

"I feel useless right now to the team. I never told you what went down. Meh past came back to bite me and someone else's safety is at risk because of me."

Another minute.

"It hurts, Redd."

Another.

"He... told me to keep this (here, she gestures at the box) as a 'consolation prize'."

This time, the silence is much shorter.

"Turns out the men I met were old enemies of mine and his 'girlfriend' was an old friend of mine who they'd kidnapped. They drugged me and kept me there for 18 hours, awake the whole time. They beat me almost senseless and I had so much narcojet in me I couldn't fight back. You all didn't hear because of this little number."

(she gestures to the muzzle)

"They could still have my friend, Redd. I feel so... helpless. They could still have her, and I couldn't do a damn thing. The only thing they left was this."

She hands you a note.

"Dear slut,
We hope you enjoyed what little time you got with us. If you ever cross us like that again you're never getting away from Luthuc again. Stay away from Tove you dumb Welsh cunt, and we won't have a problem. You can keep everything we used, especially the Scold's Bride, it will keep your mouth from running off to the wrong people about this whole deal, now won't it? If I ever see your sorry face around again trying to talk to Tove, You can spend the rest of your life in a cage.
Sincerely, your new owner, Niall"

"I'm worried its not that simple. They have an old friend of mine. They took my dignity, something important to me, and I'm tempted to just concede to them. They're an old gang feud. And, to be frank, I've never been more humiliated in my life. Not even Rheon was this bad."

"And who was this Rheon sod?"

"Old rival ganger back when I was a Blood Wren. First man to take me down. Spent three days being driven around in his trunk as a trophy. We're on good terms now after I fought his orc dominatrix instead of sucking his cock."

"Why does it always come back to sex with her misadventures?" briefly flashes across your mind.

"Because killing me is so hard, most of my enemies tend to humiliate me."

You are briefly caught off-guard: you must have let too much show on your face.

"You have lived a very... difficult life, Rhun. Understand I do not mean to insult or undercut you by suggesting this, but I believe Rex has a therapist he sees for his post-traumatic stress. Maybe seeing a professional might help?"

"Maybe. Rhûn Hir Ap Maelgwyn gives me good mental advice! He's been making me feel better... along with Sudo."

Ah. Yes. Ever since you knew her, Rhun would occasionally insist that she was being advised by the spirit of a dead Welsh king. A cursory assensing of her showed no magical interference, so you had written it off as some kind of coping mechanism. You are starting to worry about how this delusion might progress, given the trauma she just went through.

Rhun is quiet for a few more minutes. It seems like she's done talking.

You lean over and pat her on the shoulder.

"Well... good talk, Rhun! Glad we could chat like this."

You excuse yourself from her room and flop down on your safehouse cot.

"You are your own man, not what Father wanted you to be, Frederick Jacob Smith! You QUIT the damned job! Pull yourself together!"

"Of course I care about you, Rhun! We are part of a team, now. And teams look out for each other. Now, I am certain we are both tired, so I think we should both go to bed."

"But we didn't even get to discuss the rituals of the Scythian Black Cloaks or the men of Gelonos! I know tha's what you want~"

"I BEG OF YOU, RHUN, LET ME SLEEP."

"Well, I can't sleep, and nobody else is around to pester. So, I kind of don't wanna."

This finally pushes you too far. You harden your face.

"If you do not leave I WILL CALL BARBIE AND EXPLAIN THAT THOSE PEOPLE IN TAMPA WEREN'T FISHERMEN."

>London, England
>Wondertainment Toys Head Office
> September 8th, 2044

You are Frederick Jacob "Wonderboy" Smith, a tender 10 years old, son of the founder of the B-corp Wondertainment Toys, Howard Chesterfield "Doctor Wondertainment" Smith. You are currently waiting outside of his office to see him. It strikes your precocious mind as odd that you have to make an appointment to see your own father, but you know that this is how GROWN-UPS do things, and you want to be thought of as a GROWN-UP. After all, you ARE 10.

A group of old men who smell of peppermints come out of Father's office. They do not look very happy, which is strange, because Father always says that the Wondertainment business is ALL ABOUT making everyone happy. One of them is carrying a briefcase labeled "Mars England". Another has a briefcase labeled "Barr's Soft Drinks". They especially do not look happy. They all give you funny looks as they walk by, like they are angry and sad all at once. The secretary, who is a trog, only Father says you cannot call them that because it is a hateful word, so you guess he is just a troll, tells you that Father can see you now.

You go into Fathers office. The inside is brightly-colored, like rainbow sherbet, and has a big wooden desk. A number of small toys are scattered across it, and there is a great big cyberterminal in the back. The cyberterminal is displaying a little picture of the United Kingdom, and says "Wondertron 1.0" underneath. Father is standing in front of it, wearing the special coat and hat he wears when he's working, and fiddling with something.

"Blast the ruddy thing! Have to call Numbers, get him to fix it... 'ten-million-pound miracle marketing machine', my arse! Bloody thing can't run even the most basic statistical analysis without crashing..."

You cough to let Father know you are here. He jerks up and looks around guiltily.

"What's that? Who's there? Oh! Its just you, Redd, my little wonderboy!"

He crouches down and tousles your bright-red hair.

"You're done with your studies, then?"

"Yes, Father. Mister Paveen says that you will need to send me to university soon. He says that I am already reading at a university-level!"

"Good show, son! Glad to see you've got a double-dose of that Wondertainment genius! It'll serve you well, once these old bones can't handle the hat anymore!"

Father tosses the top hat into the air and catches it, right side up, on his head. You have sworn since a very young age that you would figure that trick out.

"How has your day been, Father?"

"Smashingly good, in fact!" Father pulls you in and whispers conspiratorially into your ear: "Don't say anything, but I think we may be branching into candies and sodas soon!"

"Really?" You whisper back.

"Keep it under your hat, lad: can't have you spoiling the surprise for the rest of the world!"

"Cool! So... now that my studies are done, I was wondering... could I help you out with your job?"
>>
>>951420
Father's face grows suddenly cold.

"I... don't think that would be a great idea, Redd. How about you.. run along to the offices? Lots of parents bring their children in- you can make some new friends!"

"Yes, Father."

You trudge out of Father's office. You do not bother going down to the general office floor: there are hardly ever any kids, and when there are, most of the time they act like they are scared of you. So, you just walk out of the building and across the park, to the three-story house you and Father live in. You walk straight to the library, pull a book at random off a shelf (Plutarch's "Lives"), and start reading.

The memory washes over you, and fades. You head upstairs and start making breakfast.

He shakes his head, as if to clear it.

"Anyways, think I may have figured out a way to help Rhun, but you might not like it."

"What, exactly, are you thinking?"

"Well, Rhun couldn't sleep last night so I ah... I let Pygmalion into her stereo system and told it to pick things off of MySound that would help her sleep. Seemed like it worked. She was out pretty quick."

AI are just like people, if people arose spontaneously from complex automated processes, possessed tremendous processing power, and didn't have bodies! So, not much like people, really. Bad metaphor.

One of the more well-known AIs, Goldenboy, is the world's 5th-richest intelligence. Another one, Pulsar, is a Matrix clebrity and a civil-rights activist for AIs (or, as he insists, Digital Intelligences: AI is a loaded term that suggests that Analog Intelligence is the only "valid" form of intelligence.)

On the other hand, Sojurner was an AI that, merely two years ago, almost activated a massive orbital bioweapons platform in a terrorist attack against the megacorps for enslaving DIs, and Deus caused the Crash 2.0 in a demented attempt at ascending to some kind of cyber-godhood.

"no. he did not."

The grey sphere that Pygmalion uses to represent itself appears floating in the air, projected from the family room's trid-set, while its quiet, androgynous voice susurrates from the stereo. "he specifically instructed me to not access the wider matrix, and to deny all commands and requests not originating from you or sudo. i have complied with these orders. is this a problem? please speak near the pick-up microphone installed in the gaming system. i cannot hear otherwise."

"No, it is not. Why are you in the trideo, Pygmalion?"

"sudo requested that i help rhun sleep. in order to do so, i am remotely hosting myself in the house's area network, as i anticipated that rhun may at some point sleep on the couch. if i have made an error, do not hesitate to point it out: all of my emotions were deleted during my transformation into my current state, so i will not be offended or hurt."

"Don't talk about what happened to you so casually", you mutter to yourself, before enunciating, slowly and clearly, "It is fine, Pygmalion. Both Sudo and I would prefer it if you went back to your box, however."

"understood."

The grey sphere vanishes.

Looking down at your commlink, you see you have a new message from Barbie.

Well, you aren't sure quite how you feel, but you might as well give it a shot. After all, how bad could this be?

You text her back "Sounds excellent! I will see you there."

A minute later, she sends you two tickets.

"I got a ticket for my dog, but then I remembered that he can probably just come in for free anyways. Feel free to invite someone you know along!"

The ticket is apparently to some kind of underground independent punk/metal concert, headlinered by a band called "Anarky Pandora".

You turn to Sudo, who currently has pulled out of the Matrix.

"Ah, Sudo, excellent timing. Everything all right in there?"

"Yeah, it should be- could you hold on a second, Redd? I need to go talk to Rhun about something."

Sudo darts off towards Rhun's room. You hear him knocking on the door, and snatches of a conversation:
"-nything about Tove?"

"Last post was about moving to Detroit."

"Ah. Her Matrix tag is-"

"-Okay."

"That bastard's gonna pay. BUT, for today I've got ta get ready ta see Ultra Unison play with Barbie."

Sudo comes back.

"Now, what was it?"

"Well, that sounded like it sorted itself out well. Would you like to go to a concert with me?"

""A concert? Uh... definitely going to have to decline. I'm not good with... crowds. In general."

"Well... alright, then."

You need to decide what to do with your spare ticket, as well as the most important question of the night: what to wear to the concert.

Alright, deciding between Dress Up and Look the Part. First post wins.
>>
>>954664
Then I guess I'll change to look the part, but still try to look good.
>>
>>954664
Oh, in the Magic and Astral Primer, can I include some things from Aetherology?
As a regular lurker of Jackpoint's magical theory and occult boards, I'd imagine that Redd would have read posts by Magister and some of the other big-name posters.

I'll even prepare a list of board personalities he might have heard of.
>>
>>954696
You decide that if you want to attend a punk concert, you know only one person who can make you look the part: Rhun.

You walk into her room to see her wearing a torn-up tank-top, tight leather jeans, a leather collar, spiked bracelets, and army boots.

"Ah...Rhun. Do you perhaps think..."

"Yeh want me ta give you some fashion tips? Come over 'ere, then."

After a good deal of struggling and arguments about personal space, she eventually gets you to put on a worn black tee, a reactive-synth-leather jacket with spikes ("For protection", she says), big spiked boots, ripped black jeans (with cargo pockets), and death-mask face paint.

When you look yourself in the mirror, you see what could pass as either a very classy Halloweener or a hungover Voudou street shammy.

"The band's are gonna be jealous they don't have a guy that looks like you as their frontman, Redd! I've gotta say, you must like her a LOT to suffer through a Super Unison and friends concert."

You're briefly confused, until you remember the opening acts: Super Unison, Rotengen, The Takedown, Audax, Wraithward and Stonecloud.

"...What, exactly, do you mean by that?"

"I think you're going because you like her. Not because of the bands playing. They're my kinda music. Here, take these."

She hands you a set of earplugs.

"Don't ruin your ears, I wear them too and still can hear the music. Take my advice, just hang near her and dance when Stonecloud comes up, they're softer and do romantic songs."
>>
>>954760
"Well, if you're certain..."

Rhun suddenly takes your shoulder and turns you to face her:

"Just trust me, Barbs probably likes you for you, not whatever else. You deserve to be happy man. And tonight is a good night to recover. I definitely need a night to get back to my old self."

Now that you're all ready for the party, its time to look for someone to take the extra ticket. Tizona's commlink won't pick up, so you try the only other option:

"Rex?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you like to go to a concert?"
"Is it some tree-hugging 'Save the Drop-Bears' garbage?"
"No."
"Sure."

At 5, your trio hears the staccato blasting of a horn outside and a text from Barbie.

"Outside now. Just a little queasy ;_;"

"Who's driving you?"

"Oh, I forgot to tell you. Lancey came up to visit a couple days ago! He's driving us all to the concert!"

You feel the blood run out of your face as you turn to the window, alter its chromatint, and look outside.

You see a beat-up van idling in your driveway. Barb-Lenore, you suppose (it is what's done, right?), is sitting in the passenger's seat, the green tint to her face failing to ruin her cute button nose or fair cheekbones. And sitting next to her...

Stylishly messy brown hair. A lanky-yet-toned frame that looks unnaturally smooth and polished, more like ceramic than flesh. Defiant buck teeth jutting out from his upper lip as his mouth twists into a mixture of a grin and a sneer. Eyes whose muddy irises and jet pupils seem permanently constricted into pin-points. A horrible tee-shirt that says "I'm dressed as a serial killer, they look like everyone else", with a little pin-on in the corner bearing his gang's insignia.

You step away from the windows and walk to the living room.

"Rex, Rhun, Lancelot is here."

Rex immediately dives behind the couch and emerges with a combat shotgun. "I'm not letting that psycho clown druggie take me alive."

"NOT IN THAT SENSE, REX."

"By the gods, have I not suffered enough already?! What the sodding hell are we gonna do about this then?"

"The man chained an Aztechnology local manager up, then invited every gang in Dallas to a party where he let them do whatever they wanted to him for 5 nuyen, then incinerated him at the end of it! I saw some fucked-up shit in the Sinai, hell, I DID some fucked-up shit in the Sinai, but that..."

"Well, I do not think that he is unstable enough to try something that grandiose without his mob of lunatics backing him up. Still, let's get someone else to drive."

"Tha' sick wanker will not stand between me and my goal tonight!"

You head out to the van. Lancelot rolls down the window.

"Hey, Rhun! Nice collars, you had your shots yet?!"

"Hey, you'd be the one begging. And besides, I'm not going to be the bitch tonight."

"Let's talk later. Hey, here's a great idea: how about you take Lenore in the back of the car and do something to get her to throw up? The rental company charged me too much for the van, so I want to turn it into a fucking trash-heap."

Lenore turns her head to protest, but suddenly turns a deeper shade of green and grabs her head.

"No thanks, I like Barbie."

GET ME A SLAP-PATCH OF NARCOJET, JUST IN CASE

GOT YOU

"Ah-ha, give me a second, everyone, I forgot something in the house."

You double back and pick up the slap-patch from Sudo and slip it into your pocket.

You come out to catch the tail-end of some kind of banter between Rhun and Lancelot:

"How was I supposed to guess that? I know plenty of cannibals! Great people, just don't accept any barbecue invites."

"I'll... certainly make a note of that, then. OH, HEY REDD YOU'RE HERE!"

Lancelot's head swivels around like a mounted LMG.

"Hey, Redd, looking good! Who told you about Secret Halloween?"

"Well, it was- wait, what are you talking about?"

"Secret Halloween, man! I'm already dressed for it!" He points to his tee-shirt.

"... We should get going, should we not?"

"You're totally right man, we've got a party to hit!"

He jerks a thumb at Rhun.

"If you don't want to play nice, the least you can do is take Lenore into the back seat with you. I need our guest of honor here to... ride shotgun."

"Here's an idea, Lance: we could let Rex drive! Then you and I can talk about... Kadath, or Leng, for example!"

Lancelot gives an exaggerated shrug, and his smirk widens.

"Sure, why the heck not? You only live once, after all!"

"Quite possibly..."

Lancelot gets out of the car, finally allowing you to see his full ensemble. He's wearing a pair of skin-tight short-shorts, knee-high woolen socks, and shoes covered with a rainbow-stripe pattern. The entire outfit makes your head throb.

As Rex climbs into the driver's seat, and Rhun takes the passenger's side, Lancelot helps his sister into the back, before throwing himself, legs splayed, into the seat beside her. You notice that he handles her with surprising care for someone who just talked about using her vomit to redecorate the van.

You end up sitting next to him in the van. As you get in, you notice that the back is full of black cases of various sizes.

Rex pulls the van out of the driveway.

Lancelot absent-mindedly runs a finger along the stained leather of the seat and cocks his brow at you.

"So, Redd... what shall we do back here to pass the time?~"

>Action: palm the slap-patch GLITCHED

As you try to palm the slap-patch, the car hits a pothole and the patch slides under the driver's seat.

"Alright, e'rryone all right?" Rhun calls out.

"I feel great! Reminds me of the psychiatric ward! In fact, I could go for round two! Come on, TASE ME SOUL SISTA!"

"Only if you tell me what's in the boxes, Lance."

"Oh, that's easy! A bunch of drugs I'm going to hand out at the party!"

Ten minutes later, the car rolls up to the venue's parking lot: a surprisingly nice place in the middle of a neighborhood wavering between B and C-ratings. "The Deadbolt" fickers on a holosign about the converted warehouse the concert's being held in.

Rhun bolts out of the car. "Hadfunridingwithyouguysi'mgonnaseeifsuperunisonisbackstagebyeeee!!!"

Rex gets out of the van, produces a lint roller, and carefully rolls the van detritus off of his react-fiber vest.

"I hope they serve whiskey here, because I feel like I'm going to need a lot of it."

"Aw, don't be such a downer, Rex! I'm great company~"

"Remove your hand from my hip before I break it, son."

"Aw, some silver fox you are... I'm gonna go hand out drugs and get some hot dick. Later!"

You see Lance pull one of the cases out of the back and head towards the party.

"Hey... like, what happened?"

You look back to see Barbie emerging from her stupor.

>Nothing, Barbie.

"Well, I'm gla- wait, one WHAT?"

"Sibling, silly! I told you I have a big family, right? We're really close, so I want to make sure you mesh well with them. You know, for the future!"

"O... kay. Why are we going to this concert, in particular? I did not think you were a metal fan."

"Oh, I'm not. Its just that my brother Lucas plays guitar for Wraithward, and this concert means a lot to him, so I wanted to show him my support! See?"

Barbie points out the silvery "Wraithward" stitched onto her dress.

"Well, if this means that much to you, I am willing to give them a listen."

The venue smells like tobacco and booze, as well as traces of more suspicious scents. A massive "death wall" of speakers is set up on stage, and the floor is already starting to fill with thuggish louts of all shapes and sizes. Rhun appears to be instigating a fight/mosh pit in the middle of the room, apparently too excited to wait for the first band to take the stage. Rex is sitting at the bar at one end of the venue, drinking whiskey and, you have no doubt, glaring at the unwashed, youthful masses through his mirrorshades. Barbie drags you to a spot that will, according to her, be directly in Lucas's sightline when he comes out. You kill the time pre-concert by chatting with Barbie about the beauty of the metaplanes. Despite a distinct lack of knowledge about them, she seems to eagerly drink up your words.

The first opening act takes the stage, and the concert begins. Beyond Rhun bridal carrying the lead singer of Super Unison offstage (apparently much to their mutual delight) and Barbie's brother evoking riotous cheering from the crowd as he played the guitar while hanging by his knees off of the rafters while performing a song called "Winter's Bitter Shade", all seems to be going well. Then it occurs to you that you haven't seen Lance all evening.

You decide to not let the antics of that clown ruin your night, and stay with Barbie as Anarky Pandora comes on. As they launch into their first song, "Break Shit", Barbie reaches down and holds your hand. Her skin is warm and soft, and her grip is reassuring. You feel... good, and everything in the world is right.

AP wrap up their set, and the venue begins to drain as the various metalheads disperse back to the campuses, flophouses, and ratty apartments they doubtlessly call home.

Barbie and you are half-standing, half-leaning against each other, hands bound together. You find yourself surprisingly calm with this, right here and now... So much so that you don't even notice Rex coming up to the two of you.

"Redd, we need to talk."

"Don't sneak up on me like that, damn you Rex! We were having a MOMENT."

"Yeah! Redd was whispering in my ear about the Long sunsets, which is weird because I thought I would see those during the summer, but there's a special place you can go to see them all the time?"

"Actually, its the LENG-"

"You two can talk about sunsets later, we have a problem! I haven't had visual contact with Lancelot this entire event."

"Is that so? Barbie, can you wait a minute?"

You turn on your commlink and quickly do a local area search for Lance.

NO RESULTS FOUND FOR THAT NAME. PLEASE TRY AGAIN.

Cursing him internally, you head for the exit- and almost collide with Rhun heading the other way.

"Rex filled me in. Can't find the little shite or his van anywhere in the lot. I hope those were normal drugs he was carrying..."

"DAMN! I'm going to STRANGLE that little rodent when I find him..."

You give the lot a quick once-over and spot the outline of the van in a nearby alley. You quickly sprint over to it.

The keys are in the ignition and all but one of the boxes is missing. The sole remaining box has foam cut-out to contain a mask, some folded clothes, and a large handgun of some kind. "馬鹿" is embossed on the top. Inside the depression where the mask would usually lie is a note:

"Hate to dine and dash, but I have an afterparty to attend! I wiped the van clean of DNA evidence and removed it from the Vehicle Identification Database. Toss it to a chopshop for a few grand as an apology. Redd: my sister deserves better than you, but she isn't into dragons, so you'll have to do.

"Just... set your agent to trawl news reports for AnComic activity. He was... very professional, but I still would like to know what his endgame was tonight. And DO keep a low profile."

"Who?"

"Rhun's friend. Ask her about it, 's not really my place to talk about it. Now I think I'm going back to my room... before I pass out again."

You sigh heavily as the line closes.

Rex puts a call through mere seconds afterwards.

"How many are dead?"

Magic is the use of mana, which is an energy field generated by all living things. This blankets the earth, and up to a certain altitude (about 80km). There is no mana in space, or on other planets in our solar system.

Magic is still poorly understood by the public, even though it’s been with us for nearly six decades. Yes, people are stupid; this shit’s been around for sixty years, it’s used in everyday life, MIT changed their name to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Thaumaturgy, there’s Lore Stores like there used to be Borders shops, and people still refuse to educate themselves on it.

The megacorps, on the other hand, know that magic is another profitable resource to be exploited, and so offer plum benefits to those magic-users who sign up with them. These wage mages may be looked down upon by other magic-users, but at least they’ve got a Corporate SIN, company housing, free college tuition and continuing education credits, signing bonus, and a higher starting salary.

Magic use is licensed and regulated. When a person can burn people with their mind, it makes people’s trigger-fingers itchy, and so we get Registration. You gotta be licensed, and have permits, and fill out forms in triplicate if you want to buy that jar of frog eyes, or inform the Star that you’re going to be performing a ritual and tell them exactly how long it will take and why. That’s why some mages go live in the shadows, so they don’t have to deal with this kind of drek.

This is actually warranted, because magic can be as evil as the people who use it. From toxic shamans who summon up literal spirits of pollution, to unsanctioned (non-Aztlani) blood magic users kidnapping and killing people to power their spells, to the absolutely batshit insane insect shamans who summon bug spirits, magic can be pretty bad and the public does need to be protected from it.

Awakened is used to refer to something that is magical, as it has “Awakened” its magical properties.
>>
>>958268
Magic users are generally divided into four categories:
>Full Mage
They can use the full gamut of magic; enchanting, sorcery, conjuring
Further divided into Mages and Shamans

>Aspected Mage
They can only use one type of magic (Sorcery, Conjuring, or Enchanting) and can’t do anything else.
Our character is an Aspected Mage (Enchanting), meaning he can create spells, preparations (DnD/Pathfinder-style Scrolls, wands, staves but not limited to those forms), and magic items, but he can’t cast any spells or summon spirits.

>Physical Adept
They internalize magic; think of them as only being able to buff themselves, but they can do more buffs and for longer than Mages.

>Mystic Adepts
As Adepts, but can also cast spells. Their spell and power costs are higher, so at character creation they have less powers than a Physical Adept and less spells than a Mage.

>Traditions
The paradigm that a magic-user has concerning magic.
There’s Hermetic, which is the modern, logic-oriented system of magic, using equations, formulae, and building upon the work of the past. Think standard D&D wizards, bringing a scientific mindset to magic.
Shamanism, which is what it says on the tin. The old shamanic traditions of magic, whether it be Amerindian Medicine Men, Nordic Rune Carvers, Shinto kannushi. They tend to have a mentor/student or deity/follower relationship with a great spirit, such as Dog, Coyote, Eagle, or Dragonslayer. Think sort of like D&D clerics.
There are other traditions, much based upon the mysticism of older religions:
Aztec (followed by Aztlan and Aztechnology), Buddhism, Christian Theurgy, Druidism, Hinduism, Islam, Shinto, Voodoo, and others.
>>
>>958313
>Sorcery
Spell-slinging, basically. You casts the spells that makes the peoples fall down.
Spells come in two flavors: Physical and Mana
>>Physical
This spell can affect machines and non-living things, because it creates actual physical phenomena; electricity, fire, metal, acid, and other such.

>>Mana
This spell affects living things only, as it affects their astral forms or their mana.

This is important to note about illusion spells: only Physical illusion spells can affect technological sensors, because instead of affecting the minds of living things to not see the target, they bend light or create small warpings of space.

>Conjuring
The summoning, binding, and dismissing of spirits.
Spirits range in intelligence from about dog-like to superhuman to completely eldritch abominations.
You’ve got Watcher Spirits, which are easy to summon, but not that bright. Spirits of Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Man. Urban spirits, nature spirits, toxic spirits. These, at least, are from the regular metaplanes. There’s even faeries from Faerie; these are the old school Fae, and are not to be messed with. Then there are the ones from the Deep Metaplanes; shedim, insect spirits, and other, more Lovecraftian things.
Generally, spirits are from the Astral and lower planes, and not from the material. They are called here, and want to go back.
Mages tend to treat spirits as things to be controlled.
Shamans tend to treat spirits as powerful beings to request services from.
This can be problematic because spirits aren’t stupid. They have entire civilizations and societies of their own, and they talk. Actions have consequences, and conjurers who piss off the spirits might not be able to summon spirits anymore, or the ones that answer might only be coming to try to kill the summoner.
>>
>>958330
>Important Spirits
Mentor Spirits - spirit guides that provide shamans with their powers, and any that bind themselves to the mentor spirit.

Insect Spirits - They are insects that are spirits, called Invae. They are actively hostile to human life. They are bad news because they are powerful and have no sense of fear, and will try to bring in as many of their kin as they can. Chicago had to be nuked because them. But just because they’re bugs doesn’t mean they’re stupid. The Universal Brotherhood was a charitable organization (think a cross between Scientology and the Church of Latter-Day Saints) that turned out to be a front for getting bodies for insect spirits to possess.
Mantis and Spider spirits, while Invae, seem to prioritize eating other insect spirits. But they’re not your friends, just an enemy of your enemy.

Shedim - These are some scary-ass motherfuckers caused by the mana spike from Halley’s Comet. They can possess a dead body, any dead body, and keep on calling for more of their friends. Their mook shedim are physically strong and a bitch to take out, but not too bright. But their Masters are superhuman strategic geniuses.
These guys are the reason that all morgues are warded to keep spirits out, and people have been trying to ward graveyards as best they can for the past 10 years, lest they have another Night of the Living Dead.

>things common between Sorcery and Conjuring
One, it can only be done in line-of-sight.
That means that seeing a target via electronic magnification scopes, video camera’s, drone video feeds, and holograms means you cannot target them, no matter how much you KNOW they’re there. That means sniper scopes or binoculars with electronic magnification are useless to a mage, as is normal cyber-eyes.
You need the original photons, as it were.
So old-school optical binoculars and scopes that use lenses, and cyber-eyes that use glass (or other appropriate transparent material) focusing elements and the original optic nerve, are still good for mages to target with.
Also, spirits that are bound to the caster can be magical spotters, allowing the mage to cast a spell at a target as if he were standing where the spirit is. Geeking the mage is difficult if they can stay behind cover and throw fireballs at you via a spirit that’s invisible and can see your hiding spot.

>Common between Sorcery, Conjuring, and Enchanting
It’s draining to cast spells and conjure spirits. Most of the time, if you cast within your abilities, the drain is just Stun damage. Try to wield power beyond your Magic attribute, or certain rituals, spells, or enchantments, and it can be Physical damage that can kill you.

>Enchanting
Alchemy, creation of Focuses, creation of Awakened compounds.
You can imbue an item with a spell; anyone can use it, even a Mundane. But, these are not permanent like the scrolls or wands you’re used to. They have a half-life called Potency, and is measured in hours. So make sure you the Preparation you get is fresh.
You can also create magical foci, fetishes, and compounds.
An emerging field is manatech. Basically magitech, the fusion of magic and technology.
This is also the school of disenchanting, which allows you to disrupt or destroy astral constructs and magical items.
Having a magic lodge (essentially a library of magical knowledge/workshop) will help work in this field immensely, as it would in sorcery and conjuring.

>Magic Items, Foci, and Fetishes
>Reagents
Materials that contain mana that can be used in alchemical processes, creating foci, banishing, binding spirits, counterspelling, disjoining, ritual spellcasting, spellcasting (increasing the effective Force that can be channeled through the spell), summoning spirits, and making temporary magical lodges.
Reagents differ from tradition to tradition. A powerful reagent in a hermetic tradition might be worthless in a shamanic tradition, and vice-versa. By the rules, a reagent of one tradition has only half the power in the other traditions. There are exceptions, of course. Some reagents are effective across all traditions; orihalcum is one such super-reagent, and that’s why it worth more than its weight in gold.

>Foci
A Focus is a magical artifact that adds its power to its user in a given task. They are astral constructs bonded to a physical form, and when activated, appear in the astral as an object that can be manipulated and carried.
Enchanting, Metamagic, Power, Spell, and Spirit Foci basically add their Force rating to the dice pool of their associated activity. If you have Sorcery 4 and a Spell Focus (Combat) of rating 3, when you cast a spell, you can cast it as if you had a Sorcery 7.

Qi Foci are basically foci for Adepts and their powers. They can take the form of tattoos, piercings, and ritual scarring as well as being anything the other foci could be, which is almost anything from a glass marble to a wand.

Weapon Foci are just magical melee weapons. They’re essentially +1 to +5 magic weapons and can affect astral forms. Don’t think this would let Mundanes fight ghosts; Foci still need to attune to a person who has magic to begin with before their powers activate.

>>958343
>Fetish
Special magic items that reduce the Drain that a spell causes. A fetish will only help with reducing the Drain on one specific spell. This spell must be learned with the fetish, and cannot be cast without the fetish e.g. you know the spell Powerball then buy a fetish that reduces the drain you take from casting Powerball, now you must learn Powerball+Fetish as a new spell. If you lose the fetish, you can’t cast Powerball+Fetish. Not so bad if you already know Powerball, but a problem if you only know Armor+Fetish and your fetish for it gets stolen by an enemy air spirit.

>Magic compounds (drugs)
We can also create certain magic drugs, like astral powder (aka fairy dust, sticks onto magically-active things and astrally projecting beings), Hands of Glory (let’s you use one skill of the person you took the hand from), mana-sensitive photographs, mystical restraints, magic silver (causes any being that has the ability to turn into a mist to be forced back into a corporeal form), Lot’s Curse (poison to turn a person to stone), and others.

>Fluorescing Astral Bacteria
This is important enough to warrant its own subsection.
Fluorescing Astral Bacteria (FAB) is genetically engineered Awakened bacteria that comes in three strains, and is used in astral security and as a magi-biological weapon.
FAB 1 - Dies when an astral form or magical force passes through it, releasing a chemical that reacts to and can be seen with UV light.
FAB 2 - dual-natured and can be suspended in the air, so that it makes it difficult for astral forms to move through it and the movement can be seen in physical space.
FAB 3 - (Biological Weapon) Actively seeks out and feeds on astral forms, and can be lethal to dual-natured organisms.

Just as with other systems, making magic artifacts is expensive work, both in money and XP (Karma, in Shadowrun).
>>
>>958330
Fun QM fact: a burgeoning Metaplane exists called Zecorporatum, which appears to be a twisted mirror of the Shadowrun universe. If one had to guess what concept or element this plane represents, it would be "Shadowrunning". Two kinds of spirits native to that plane, the Anarchs and the Blackjacks, occasionally infiltrate our planes to do "runs". These runs seem to be aimed at improving things in THEIR world by changing things in OURS.

Blackjacks are the Black Trenchcoat in person. They get in, hit the target, and get out. You probably won't know they're a spirit until they vanish back to their home plane.

Anarchs are the Pink Mohawk incarnate, and tend to just rampage through high-security areas.

>Astral Plane
The Astral is a shadow-copy of our material plane, echoes of life, emotions, and flows of mana. Mana itself is like a flow of life energy, and so there are places where mana surges and recedes, and this is reflected in the Astral.

>Assensing
Almost anyone who has some spark of magic is capable of assensing, which is to flip up the blinders and look into the astral. It lets you see the astral, look at the auras of people, see the flow of mana, even as you move and talk on the material plane. Study a person’s aura enough, and you can tell if they have any cybernetics from the way that augments mess with their aura, as well as being able to recognize their unique astral signature. You can also get a sense of their emotions through this.Machines (computer screens, holograms) and non-living things (books, paintings, signs) which have no life essence only appear as shadows in the Astral.
But just like Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, if you can see Them, They can see YOU.
Looking into the Astral means that you become visible on the astral plane not just as another living being, but as an actual astral form that can be affected by astral beings. That also means becoming vulnerable to them, and being able to be affected by their attacks.
That also means that if you have your astral perception on, you’ll bump into things like astral wards and other magical anti-intrusion methods.

>Dual-natured
This means that you’re in both the material and astral planes at the same time. A lot of the magical critters that have appeared have this, which makes it near impossible to escape them since they can see your life energy through any camo and illusion spells, and if you’re a wizard/spirit doing some recon, they can see and bite you.

>Astral Projection
Projecting your astral self into the Astral plane. You can zip around the world in a few hours, check out places that aren’t properly warded, spy on people. Useful, but you can’t hear them, can’t see what they’re writing/typing, and if you’re away from body too long you’ll die.
This also is what is used to travel to the metaplanes.
Only Full Magicians can normally do this. Others have to use special Awakened drugs, esoteric rituals, or be lucky enough to have a stable astral phenomena.

>Astral Phenomena
Astral Rift - places where the barrier between metaplanes have thinned, allowing a bridge to connect them. Even mundanes can astrally project and enter the metaplanes at these places. But they are unstable, and if you can’t get back to your body in time, you will die.

Astral Shallows - Places where the barrier between the astral and material planes have thinned, letting even mundanes view the astral and be seen.

Background Count - The ambient level of mana in an area. Areas of low mana are ebbs and voids, places of high mana are domains and warps. Since human emotions can affect mana, this aspects the mana, makes it charged with a certain type of feel. If you’re part of it, then it will empower you; if you’re not, then your magic won’t work as well.
That’s why if you fight a toxic shaman in a toxic waste dump, the Background Count will empower them (lots of mana, plus it’s aspected to Pollution) while hindering you (unless you’re also a Toxic Shaman). This was discussed with Tizona, that recent research confirmed this, and that’s why if you’re a Catholic mage, your mojo is overwhelming in a Catholic church, it’s pretty okay in a Protestant church, and not so much when in a Hindu temple.
Oh, and stay away from concentration camps and mass graves. The Background Count is going to be...messy.

>Metaplanes
The Metaplanes are entire planes of existence and how big they are is sometimes down to individual perception. Most people get to them via astral projection, and usually require higher levels of magicial initiation and mastery. These are also where spirits come from.
The Dweller on the Threshold is a mysterious entity that bars the way between the astral plane and the metaplanes. It knows EVERYTHING about the magician trying to pass it, and sets before them some kind of challenge as a toll.
Known Metaplanes:
Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Man and Id, Beasts, Faerie, Plants, Shadow, Death

>Fractured Metaplanes, Hyper-Metaplanes
Fractured Metaplanes are metaplanes which are intersections of two or more metaplanes, and sometimes intersect with the astral plane and the physical plane.

Hyper-Metaplanes are formations within larger metaplanes. In the Metaplane of Man, there seems to be a plane for every culture and religions’ afterlives. In addition, there are hyper-metaplanes separate from them, essentially independent nations, such as Celephaïs, Hudson Valley, Avalon, and Gulnee Thrudhelm.

>Astral Sea
The Astral Sea is the great desert which connects and contains all of the metaplanes together, and bridges the Astral Plane with the Metaplanes.
Imagine the Astral Sea as the ocean. Metaplanes are like islands or chains of islands. Hyper-metaplanes are even smaller groups of islands within a chain (metaplane).
Regular astral projection to a metaplane is like taking a plane from the big continent (Astral Plane) to a specific island (metaplane that the Dweller thinks you should go to). But you’ve got no boat, so you can’t go over to the neighboring islands (hyper-metaplanes) because there’s ocean (Astral Sea) between you and them. >Deep Metaplanes
These metaplanes are truly alien. This is where horrors like the Shedim come from.
And deeper still, the Lovecraftian monsters.

The civilizations in the metaplanes are ancient and full of secrets. If you go to the hyper-metaplane nations outside of the ones that are more frequently visited, you can find information that no one has known in thousands of years, possibly secret even from the Great Dragons and immortal elves.

>Information relevant to Redd
Magister and others on Jackpoint have found a correlation between Halley’s Comet, Kerutz Sungrazer comet events, and a spike in ambient mana levels. Perhaps high enough that especially sensitive people could have made trips to the metaplanes.
Al Azif was apparently a real book; H.P. Lovecraft came up with the name in 1910, the same year as a mana spike from Halley’s Comet. The real Al Azif was given by Dunkelzahn to Dr. Daniel Gordon upon the former’s death. Dr. Gordon died, but not before using Al Azif to explore the Astral Sea and the deep metaplanes. His notes were translated by the Jackpoint poster known as Magister.
Redd is researching Kadath, which is located in Id. It is a place in the Cthulhu Mythos, and the real place is even worse than in Lovecraft’s writings. If you go to Kadath (which is utterly abandoned) the sense of foreboding is so bad that even the ghoul natives of Id who have been stalking you for a meal will say “Fuck this, I don’t need the meat this bad” and leave.

You call Tizona on her commlink.

"It's 2 in the morning, you dumb gringo! The hell you want?"

"Tizona, we have recently acquired a van, its kind of beaten-up but decent, and we were wondering if the sisters could use one for their outreach programs?"

"How did you get it?"

"Well, Lance-"

"Oh infierno no, no voy a tomar nada que la cogida enferma tocó! That guy's got some Satanic juju, he needs Jesus in his life, I'm not getting involved in that!"

The line goes dead.

You drive the van to Barbie's apartment complex, then take it to Fred's, where he gives you a clean 8,000 nuyen for it. You then walk the six blocks back to the safehouse.

Too exhausted for words, you collapse onto your mattress, and fall into a blessedly dreamless sleep.

120 KB
120 KB JPG

Ah, something I almost forgot about, but is one of the essential topics in Shadowrun magic:

>Essence
This is the lifeforce of a person. This lifeforce isn't just about whether you've got all your arms and legs and body intact, but the holistic whole of the body's biological mana system. This system gets disrupted by anything foreign, and cyberware is the major cause.
Because Essence is a measure of the integrity of your soul and leads into your magic, mages rarely get cyberware because it fucks with their magic.
The more invasive the cyberware is, the more Essence it costs.
Losing a limb won’t drop your Essence, but abusing drugs, super traumatic wounds/illnesses, implanting cyberware, bioware, or nanoware will. Removing the offending augment will not restore your Essence, but leave a ‘hole’ that you can fill with other implants for no additional Essence loss.
Cyberware comes in different grades, and the higher (and more expensive) the grade, the less the Essence loss.
>Cyberware Grades: Used, Common, Alpha, Beta, Delta
Beta and Delta require specialized clinics that are very expensive and hard to get an appointment at.
Bioware can be Cultured, meaning it uses your own genome as a base, reducing the Essence loss.

If your Essence hits zero, you’re dead.
Since Essence never comes back, that’s what makes creatures that have the Awakened power to drain Essence so goddamn scary. Essence that’s been drained can never be recovered. You can’t spend Karma to try to recover it. It is gone permanently.

>Cyberzombies
They used to be just a rumor, a legend, a fairy-tale to scare newbie shadowrunners.
But they’re not. They’re real, and very well kept secrets.
Cyberzombies are amalgamations of bleeding edge tech and magic, forcing a metahuman soul to stay bound to a body that has hit zero Essence, and below.
This is what prevents Shadowrun from going full Ghost in the Shell; we can’t be full-body conversions because we’re all magical in a sense, we all have a soul that is bound to a body by Essence, and die when Essence reaches zero.
But due to megacorps wanting the walking armor and weapons of a drone with the onboard intellect of a metahuman, the cyberzombie was created. They’ve got so much cyberware and bioware stuffed in there that there’s hardly any original flesh left, which makes them resistant to bullets AND spells.
>>
>>960923
Cyberzombies tend to fall in to one of three groups. Either they're suicidal woobies who have to be puppeteered or drugged 24/7 to prevent them from going on a suicidal rampage, catatonic husks no better than a drone, or raving mad abominations. All cases are equal parts sad and disgusting.
>>
>>960960
Honestly, with the advances in drone technology, I'm surprised no one has yet built a complete Terminator walker drone with a rigger interface yet.
It'd be cheaper than a cyberzombie and you can mass manufacture them for a lot cheaper than cyberzombies.

You switch the trid on using your commlink and scroll over to the local newstream, certain that, whatever Lance did last night, it was flashy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06nLTjHlId4

(Fade-in on a young-looking elf in a seductive-yet-respectable suit standing on a plinth in the middle of a spinning frenzy of AR screens)

"Welcome to the morning edition of the Seven Arcs highest-rated news-stream, The Panopticon! I'm your host, Simone Hoffman!

Our top story: last night, the peaceful Arc of High Point was sent into a state of shock as the terrorist known as 'The Idiot', currently #19 on the UCAS's Most Wanted List and leader of the anarchist group known as 'The Anarcho-Comics', committed a brazen robbery on the main storage warehouse of A-rated organic furniture company Blue Ridge Finecrafts. Our crack team has managed to acquire footage of the robbery, and we are bringing it to YOU! This footage is GRAPHIC, so get the kids out of the room.

(feed switches to security footage of a warehouse filled with food planks of various kinds, as well as boxes filled with furniture. A number of guards are seated in a breakroom while a stocker of some kind takes inventory.)

One of the warehouse doors suddenly echoes with staccato knocking:

*rap-rap-ta-tap-tap, tap-BOOM!*

The door goes flying off of its hinges from the force of the breaching charge, with a baker's dozen of goons in mismatched costumes with the A-C logo branded on various articles of clothing pouring in seconds after, rapidly taking the stocker as a hostage and pinning the guards down.

"The Idiot" saunters in after them. You have to admit, the costume does have a certain flare: a blue-and-orange jester's outfit made (you suspect) out of reactive-weave fibers, complete with cap and bells, is the main piece. Lance's visage is concealed by a custom-fitted mask made in the shape of a maniacally-grinning smiley face. His right hand carries a jester's staff covered with wires and knobs: your best guess is that its some kind of fancy Matrix toy. In his left is a MASSIVE six-shooter dressed up like an old-school cork gun.

"HAPPY SECRET HALLOWEEN, EVERYONE! TRICK OR TREAT!!! Now, put away the guns and this can all-"

One of the security guards raises his sidearm, and you see Lance/The Idiot's arm twitch briefly before lining up and firing almost faster than your eye could follow. The guard goes down, missing half his head.

"Now come on gentlemen, keep your heads on! No one wants to go off half-cocked!"

He turns to the stocker, who is currently crying in the grip of a troll dressed like a mix of Santa Claus and Jesus.

"W-w-w-hat do you want?!"

"Well, why wouldn't we wonderfully wicked winners want to while away Wednesday within this wood warehouse with whipped whelps? Why, we want WOOD, you get me?! I have a very LARGE hole, and I need YOU to fill it with YOUR wood, got it?!"
>>
>>961032
>"Well, why wouldn't we wonderfully wicked winners want to while away Wednesday within this wood warehouse with whipped whelps? Why, we want WOOD, you get me?! I have a very LARGE hole, and I need YOU to fill it with YOUR wood, got it?!"
Dat alliteration.
>>
>>961032
"Oh, there's no need to speak: I can tell just by looking at you. First time, right? Don't be shy: just take off your pants. I SAID TAKE THEM OFF!"

The troll releases the stocker, who begins stripping his pants off while weeping.

"W-hyyyy meee? Why are you doing this??"

"Oh, wow, you actually did it! Vampire Astronaut, please remove this man's security card and hit him with the narcojet. The rest of you, start taking the guard's guns and administer the LSD slap-patches, then start taking as much of the stuff agreed on into the truck as possible."

"Unfortunately, that's as much footage as we are legally allowed to show. Now, onto our next story: drag racing!"

You shut off the trid and start researching the observatory sites.

6 HOURS LATER

You've managed to cross-reference the site map to modern GPS imaging and data reports, and constructed a rough map of viable dream-observatory investigation sites, with accessibility assessed on a five-point scale:

>Tunguska: N/A. Site directly maps with site of Tunguska Event.

>Amazon Site: 5. Pros: Almost certainly untouched and unguarded. Cons: Located 400 miles into Amazonia territory, in the heart of the Awakened Amazon.

>London Site: N/A. GPS data places site in the Spill: never going back there again if at all possible. Most tunnels collapsed in "The Incident".

>Shakotan Site: 4. Pros: Isolated, unlikely to be heavily defended by IJN. Cons: Likely over a hundred meters underwater at this point, rental of advanced dive equipment mandatory.

>Bavaria Site: 3. Pros: GPS data puts it in lightly inhabitated area of preserved Bavarian forest, within a couple days from small outpost town. Cons: area is isolated and rural, high chance of paracritter run-ins during hike.

>Empty Quarter Site: 3-4. Pros: VERY isolated location by land, but can be reached easily by boat: site is apparently known as "Irem" and has been mapped before. Cons: Site is likely looted and may be of limited usefulness.

>Zimbabwe Site: 3. Pros: Isolated, area is relatively verdant and survivable. Cons: Site is located in Victoria Gorge.

>Himalayas Site: N/A. Has already been located by Atlantean Foundation.

>Atlantic Site: N/A. Has already been located by Atlantean Foundation.

>Antarctic Site: 5. Pros: Supremely isolated. Cons: is located in Antarctica.

>Moscow Site: Unknown. Potential Pros: is only known viable site in an urban area, Moscow is high-traffic region making travel there less suspicious. Cons: apparently is being "utilized" by unknown faction.

You realize that planning a trip to a specific site (including looking up more data about that site) will take DAYS of work, and that it would be stupid to try and do something like this solo.

Let me list the problems with each choice:
>Amazon
The nation of Amazonia is not exactly welcoming to metahumans, especially ones from the 'civilized' nations.

>Bavaria
Troll Country. As in, the Black Forest Kingdom of trolls. That's on top of all of the Awakened animals, like Awakened bears. Do you want to deal with hyper-aggressive predators that are naturally enhanced with magic?

>Empty Quarter
A region of the Middle East known to be completely desolate. Irem is known as the "Lost City of Pillars". Both a real place and as a place that Lovecraft wrote about. So while we're guaranteed to find something there, it's also likely it will find us.

>Zimbabwe

Maybe some drugs (but they're not our char sheet), and we don't have any preparations.
Our Enchanting is just a 1, you know.

>>961489
Does Redd know any spells for making preparations?
>>
>>962117
Redd knows exactly one spell to make into a preparation, and its a spell that allows one to enter and manipulate another's dreams. He does know how to make a number of unique magical drugs:

1. Vitae: an incredibly powerful compound that prevents internal and external hemorraging and promotes mental focus, at the cost of clouding the mind and causing difficulty in communication. Magical reagent: blood of a creature with regenerative abilities. Nature: a dark red fluid injected into the bloodstream.

2. Antediluvian Wisdom: an incredibly powerful DMT derivative that grants "eyes on the inside", granting massive boosts to Logic and Intuition at minor penalties to Reaction, Body, and Strength. Non-addictive, but can have permanent effects. The bonuses are side-effects. Magical Reagent: metahuman ceberospinal fluid, extracted within a couple hours of death (Redd has a stockpile of the fluid in his basement drug lab). Nature: a vantablack fluid dropped into the eyes.

3. Mesmer: a highly-addictive drug that causes the body to release massive amounts of pheromones, rendering any in your presence more vulnerable to your suggestions. Also loosens muscles and causes mild dyskinesia. Magical Reagent: Pollen of the Galak flower. Nature: a light pink pill, taken orally.

4. Vortex: an INCREDIBLY powerful stimulant that accelerates reaction times to levels normally only found in people with Wired Reflexes. Excess use causes permanent nerve damage. Magical reagent: trace material from a storm spirit's physical manifestation (Redd has a small sample of it). Nature: a swirling gas with minor electrical discharges within. Stored in an inhaler and "whipped".
>>
>>962164

He also knows how to make a number of conventional psychedelics and nootropics:

Conventional drugs: Zen, Psyche, Cereprax, Forget-Me-Not, Nofear, Memory Fog, Nightwatch, Red Mescaline, Slab, Soothsayer, Zone

Awakened Drugs: Hecate's Blessing, Oneiro, Overdrive, Trance

More well-known Compounds: Little Smoke, Zombie Dust, Shade

Specifics about these drugs available on request.

>Rhun: Old friend who lives a couple towns over. Major history buff. Does HEMA shit IRL.

"An old friend of Rhun's. Used to run together. She's from... the Netherlands, I think.

Look, Rhun's out scouting around, so let me say this before she gets back. Rhun was going after her with or without me, and I need to make sure that she doesn't do anything... well... you know Rhun. That's why I had to leave quick. Rhun wasn't going to accept any delays. Hey, did you get the note I left?"

Any Awakened psychedelics or nootropics (or your custom drugs) can be written off as work-related. UCAS also has more relaxed drug laws, with some "less dangerous" stimulants and opiates also being legal. Stuff like Memory Fog (prevents formation of long-term memories) or Soothsayer (a psychedelic that causes pain and terrifying hallucinations) would get you detained.

What was our relationship with our sister?
Are we trying to let them continue to believe we're dead?

>>
>>962526
>What was our relationship with our sister?
Daddy dearest adopted her after he had us committed. She's everything he wanted in a daughter: obedient, devoted, easily guided and wholly dedicated to Wondertainment Industries. You only know about her from snatches of memory you have of Father visiting you and what you've read from the papers. Her legal name is Helga Isabel Anastasia Sakura von Wondertainment.

>Are we trying to let them continue to believe we're dead?

Yes, for now. You aren't sure if Father would try to... involve himself in your life or not, and you would prefer to avoid that. You DO know that your group used to work for him and Helga under the behest of Saeder-Krupp, helping them expand into the States.

>Our trust fund is tied to our Wondertainment SIN, right? Do we have some kind of money-laundering thing going on so we can take money without the fund being alerted to activity on our Wondertainment SIN?

Saeder-Krupp launders it as an... incentive for you to work for them.

"Alright, keep me updated. Let me know if anything changes."

You head downstairs and double-check your alchemy lab. Everything seems to be in order.

After doing some background research, you determine that "Vinny Russo" would be able to cross into Detroit by car with no problem, due to the open border the UCAS and CAS have enjoyed for the past 10 years. You transfer the file to a burner, deactivate its burner connections, and shut down the house's network host for good measure.

What plays over the commlink is the footage from the news broadcast. However, it doesn't cut off at the point the broadcast does. The guards start twitching and muttering to themselves as the hallucinogenic patches take effect. Then, some of them start giggling and rocking back and forth, others thrashing and screaming, while the rest just stare, their pupils as big as dinner-plates. Lance clicks on his baton, and the camera starts zooming in on them, capturing their increasingly erratic behavior as he narrates.

"THIS. THIS IS US. WITH ALL OF THE FILTERS STRIPPED AWAY, ALL OF THE LIES, ALL OF THE VANITIES, ALL OF THE PRETENSES AND BULLSHIT, JUST GONE! 2. Yes. Barbie knows about what he does, but still believes he has good in him. The rest of the family just know about his defacing of the Nicolas Aurelias Sr. Memorial Statue in the Ares Global HQ lobby, and see him as a black sheep. Lance and The Idiot's identities are not connected yet.

Hey, see if Rex or Tizona can get to you to help out with finding Rhun's friend. I'll foot the bill since I can't make it; gotta stock up on stuff. Thanks for the heads up about my lab, you were right.

You find Rex in the family room, watching an Urban Brawl match. You're shocked to find him dressed in a Chicago Shatterers tee and cap, and drinking a brew instead of whiskey.

"Come on, come on baby, come o- OH FUCKING COME ON THAT'S BULLSHIT! YOU'RE FUCKING BLIND, REF!! HE AIMED FOR THE MEDIC, YOU'RE FUCKING BLIND!"

"Rex, can we talk?"

"Next break, Redd, just give me a minute- YES! FUCKING-A YES!!! GAMBINO SCORES!!!! SUCK A FAT ONE, CLEVELAND! THAT'S FOR THE 2044 SERIES!"

A few minutes later, the next break begins.

"What's up, Redd? How about you sit down and have a cold one with me?"

"... I would like to go over some corporate security practice with you in the home theatre."

"It'll have to be quick, the Shatterers need me."

Once you are in the theatre, you turn to him.

"We need to upgrade security in this place."

"Why, exactly? We've already got the Panic Mode."

>... Panic Mode?
>I don't care, we need it to get harder to penetrate.

"Okay, we have a lockdown mode. Will it stand up to this?"

You open the video file and show it to Rex.

"... Yeah, it should hold off something like that until the Mob turns up with the heavy firepower. Blast sheets over all doors and windows, basement door seals up, and there are a couple of little surprises that will be upstairs for anyone who wants to mess with us. Lance doesn't stand a chance."

"Well, if you're sure..."

(Due to Rhun and Sudo having to resolve their misadventure for anything to advance now, AMA resuming until they're done. Ask away!)
>>
>>963425
Hey QM, quick question. What's the song that played on the phone with the Anarcho-Comics?
>>

That would be "Give Me the Amulet You Bitch" by the experimental metal group "The Sawtooth Grin"! Rhun's player is big into alternative/experimental metal, and provided me that song.

Wait so this quest is moving concurrently to a real game?
>>
>>964069
Kind of? Most of the quest thread stuff is happening during down-time in the actual game, and will likely be spun off into its own thing in the same "universe". I've been running a session with Sudo and Rhun's players over Skype concurrent to this for the Detroit stuff.

(AND WE'RE BACK! This two-at-once thing will never happen again.)

After your talk with Rex, you end up watching the rest of the Chicago Shatterers game with him. In the evening, you get a message from Sudo:

You feel sleep calling you as well. Before you go to bed, however, you decide to plan out the next day:

After another blessedly dreamless night, you start placing calls and networking with both Lone Star operatives and the Mafia (being circumspect in both matters) to try and pinpoint Lance's next target.

>9 HOURS LATER

It had taken a lot of calls and correlating reams of data, but you think you've finally found Lance's next move. And it was all thanks to Lance himself.

You had spent a while thinking on Lance's raving as "The Idiot". In particular, him talking about a "hole" of some kind, one that needed to be filled with wood. Now, on one level, that was clearly a homosexual joke, but on ANOTHER, it means that there's a hole Lance has that needs wood! Now, what kind of hole needs wood, or rather, what kind of hole needs what KIND of wood? This led you to (with the help of a groggy Sudo) pull a list of the kinds of woods stored in the warehouse Lance robbed off of Blue Ridge Finecraft's servers. Just as you thought: oak and mahogany, both woods known for their great durability and load-bearing capacity! That's why he wanted the wood!

Next, to determine where this "hole" the wood will "fill"- or, rather, PREVENT filling- is. You know that most of Charlotte is too urbanized for digging to work, so you spread your net into the entire Seven Arcs area, cross-referencing geological survey data with high-value targets. Eventually, you find it: Greensboro Coliseum, one of the greatest Urban Brawl venues in the CAS. Located away from the city center, near a nature preserve- one built on soft, easily excavate-able clay. And there's a game on tomorrow night! Any tunnel in the area wouldn't last for very long, but Lance wouldn't need it to: just long enough to let himself and his accomplishes to burrow and blast into the underground section of the sports venue!

"Lance is going to attack the Atlanta-Charlotte game tomorrow night!"

TIZONA, BARBIE, SET UP VIDEO CHAT WITH SUDO ASAP. EVERYONE ELSE, MEET ME IN FAMILY ROOM. DEFCON 2.

Rhun, Rex, and Sudo meet you in the family room. Sudo is fiddling around with the gaming console in the corner.

"Alright, adjust the I/O settings... disable proprietary settings... patch it in... and we're good, Tizona and Barbie should be able to see and hear us through the console's camera and mic now!"

"I'm more concerned about who ELSE can hear us."

"The house is secure. Lance might have gone to MIT&T, but I grew up around electronics. I'll know if he starts trying to attack our local host."

"So, wha's up?"

"Yeah, like, why are we going to a convention for the deaf?"

"What the hell are you talking about, cholo?"

"DUH, DeafCon-2? I didn't even know there was a DeafCon-1!"

"Will everyone PLEASE be quiet so Redd can brief us?!!"

The room falls silent at Rex's military bark.

"Lance is going to launch some kind of terrorist attack on the Greensboro Coliseum tomorrow night..."

You explain your evidence to the team.
Rex is the first to speak: "I'm contacting Saeder-Krupp, No way I'm letting that clown disrupt the All-American sport."

"I'll set the agent to monitor all news stories and Persona posts about the park. When he starts doing something, we'll know and be able to take action. I'll also try and set up a backdoor in the Coliseum, work with the spiders to fight him off in the Matrix."

"I can't WAIT to beat that smug lil' grin'a'is off of 'is face!"

"Barbie, I know that this has to be hard on you, but we have to stop your brother. I can waive, to an extent, his previous transgressions. Killing corrupt executives and gangers is practically a public service: the former are virtually untouchable by the law, and the latter are incapable of reform 9 times out of 10. And while I dislike killing privsecs, they know what they got into when they took their jobs, and its often a case of 'us or them'. "PLEASE!! JUST LISTEN TO ME!!! I've like, literally known him literally my entire life, and the one thing I know for sure about my brother is that you CAN'T make aspersions or whatever about him! But he needs to be stopped.
What Redd said is paramount, attacking private security and execs is one thing, part of the trade, but raiding a large public venue crosses the line. Lance is swept up with the power he wields as an anarchist demagogue. He's acting like Cobra Commander, we've got to stop him. We can talk him down if possible, but I rather save our friends and innocent people before a terrorist leader.

Barbie wipes a tear from the corner of her eye.

"I'm... certain he would."

"Okay. I trust you."

Rex pokes his head around the corner.

"Are you done? Because I just got off the horn with S-K, and they're going to triple the guards and make sure the underground sections are sealed tighter than a nun's- than something very tight. That should show him!"

"It sounds like we might not even have to go, huh Freddy?"

The mismatched pair slide out of the van's back. Rhun wall-climbs her way up into the trees, and Rex simply walks into the tree line and... vanishes, just becoming more grey-on-gray in the dim light.

Rhun starts speaking into her subvocal mic:

"Ah'm turning tha camera in me AR glasses on: give you a nice look at this."

You watch a couple minutes of Rhun leaping and spiraling through the tree-tops with superhuman grace, never landing with enough force to alert the dwarf beneath her. Eventually, the dwarf reaches a clearing, with a half-constructed earthwork tunnel, large enough to fit a man though it dug into the ground. A campfire nearby has Lance, in a lime green sweater and purple sweatpants, roasting marshmallows. A nearby stereo system is playing some old 20Cen christmas tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhzxQCTCI3E
"Hey sis! What's shakin, bacon? Want some marshmallows?"

"Yeah! Sur- wait, this isn't the time for marshmallows, Lance! I know what you're going to do tomorrow!"

Lance brings his marshmallow skewer in, blows on a 'mallow for a few seconds, then pops it in his mouth.

"Sho, 'oo 'o, 'o 'oo? Am lemme gesh, you wanna shtop me? Gimme to turn myshelf in?"

"Uh... yeah?"

"Well, why didn't you shay show? Here, lemme just call up the good ol' boys at LoneStar..."

"Hello? Yes, I'd like to turn myself over to the CAS government for being the notorious terrorist known as 'The Idiot'. Yep, I did it. All of it. That too! So yeah, just track me and throw me in jail, okay?"

"Judging by the High Threat Response team rolling your way? Yes. You have about 20 minutes before they get there: they're going all the way from the High Point base."

"Thank you for that, Sudo. Okay, Rhun, Rex, get out of there NOW, we have got an HTR team closing on our location, and I do not want to end up in their crosshairs."

"Roger. Should I extract Barbie?"

"No, we do not want to risk Lance running."

Rhun turns around and starts vaulting through the trees again. As she does so, your mic pickup registers:

"You should probably get going, sis. I don't want you getting caught up in all this. OKAY BOYS, PRE-PARTY'S OVER, WRAP IT UP AND PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE!"

A few minutes later, Barbie emerges from the forest, escorted by the same dwarf...who immediately goes down to a narcojet dart fired by Rex, who peels himself off of a nearby spruce. Rhun does a frontflip as she dismounts from a hemlock and pulls the dwarf back into the woods.

Rex quickly escorts Barbie into the van.

"All clear, only one guard on Barbie, Rhun's busy retrieving the narcojet dart and making sure he's somewhere where he won't immediately be found." Rhun sprints back a minute later. "Stuffed 'im inna empty badger den!"

Should we send Rhun or Rex back to monitor? I know it's a crazy idea, but something is rotten with Lance suddenly surrendering to law enforcement.
>>
Yeah, something is wrong here.
>>
>>968868
Seconding this, we need a damn Rigger for some eyes I the sky at this exact moment.

Hell, I'll settle for an RC truck with a camera duck taped to it.

Alright, so the consensus is "I can't shake the feeling we've been played". Now: do you want to monitor?

>Have Rex use a mix of his pseudo-S-K authority and black ops skills to monitor the preserve or the stadium.

>Have Rhun lurk in the tree/rooftops to monitor the stadium or the preserve.

>Have Sudo and his agent monitor Matrix, radio, and video traffic, as well as pubcam feeds, in the Greensboro area for Anarcho-Comic activity and to keep an eye on Lance.

>Have Tizona summon a spirit to track Lance/the A-Cs magically.

>Have Barbie use her eagle eyes and advanced scopes to monitor the preserve/the stadium.

>Have "Vinny Russo" go to the Urban Brawl game/take a walk on the preserve's nature trails tomorrow.

>(Blow your cover) Have Frederick Smith/Redd von Wondertainment, missing heir to Wondertainment Industries, miraculously show up at the Urban Brawl game/in the Nature Preserve

>Some combination of the above (please list)

>Write-In
>>
How about we do a combo? Tizona, Sudo, and Rhun each doing their specialities and teamwork. Feel free to offer other options
>>
>>968926
Part of the problem is that an RC car available to civilians and that we could get with minimal fuss given our SIN's wouldn't have any kind of real range (probably just 100 feet if there are no obstructions).

No, what you would need is to buy an RC car, get some guy (or ask around on Jackpoint/Experts Exchange) on how to connect a commlink to an RC car, put together an app from the commlink to the RC car (or drone, now that I think about it) that allows for remote control, and now you can use a cheap-ass drone.

Of course, it can be easily subverted or noticed by any deckers in the area, but that's the price for going cheap.

I was just writing that up, swap Rex and Rhun and dart any of lances accomplices that he sees
>>
>>968953
The RC car was a joke.
>>
>>968954
I could go either way, I suggested Rhun because of her roof running skills. Both of our options leave a combat specialist in reserve just in case.

Pros and cons of Rhun and Rex:

Rhun

Pros: Once you factor in bio-and-cyberware, she has Agility and Body 9, as well as extensive Blades and Gymnastics training. This lets her essentially be Faith (the protagonist of sick parkour game Mirror's Edge, for the unaware), but with a greatsword and cheat codes.

Cons: Reckless, kind of an asshole, probably insane. Will fuck up her social rolls, probably.

Rex

Pros: Has social infiltration skills as well as physical. Still has the S-K clout, even though he's been put in the time-out corner. As a last resort, can bust out Pacey Rae and reduce anything in his sight line less heavily armored than a tank to a fine mist.

Cons: Is not an invincible ninja.
>>
>>968988
Fuck it, send them both
>>
>>968988
Let's use Rex, if he gets caught by the HRT he could claim he was an SK captive taken by the ACs who just escaped. Offer counterpoints since this is a big choice
>>
>>968988
I'd prefer to send Rex.
This is about patience and observation, two things Rhun doesn't have much of.
If this was about breaking in and breaking something, Rhun would be the better one to choose.
But we're trying to keep a low profile and not let Lance or his cohorts know we're there.
>>
Eh, Rhûn has 3 con 6 negotiation with 4 charisma. No slouch there either.
>>
>>969007
Hey man. Rhun would have a lot of negative situational modifiers against her if she was caught, seeing that she has a criminal record and her Distinctive Style makes her linkable to a number of runs in the CAS.
>>
>>969007
How would you know Rhun's stats?
>>

I believe that this is Rhun's player, I happen to know that he's been watching the thread.

Alright! So we have a lineup of Sudo, Tizona, and Rex! Sudo can do his job anywhere (provided that noise interference isn't too bad), and Tizona will need a properly "holy" environment to summon her spirits, but Rex can't be in two places at once. So, where are we putting him,and when?

Where:
>Preserve
>Stadium

When:

>Now
>Tomorrow morning
>Tomorrow during the game.
>>
>>969053
Now at the preserve, we need eyes on Lance
>>
>>969053
>Preserve
>Now

We can put him in the game tomorrow, if nothing happens today. We'll even pay for the tickets.
>>
>>969068
2nd this

>>969068
>>969069

You shake your head.

"This isn't right. Lance is playing us. Rex, stay on-site and make sure Lance doesn't try anything when HRT gets here. Tizona, put a spirit on him. Tell it to remain undetected, but not to let Lance out of its sight and tell you if he does anything harmful or suspicious. Sudo, start monitoring everything you can access- Matrix, radio, newsfeeds, pubcams, EVERYTHING- for Lance and his friends. If he so much as looks in the general direction of the stadium, I want to know."

"Fine, fine, I get it! No need to be a drama queen."

Rex taps Rhun on the shoulder. "I could use those glasses."

"But MY VIEWERSHIP!!"

"You can just edit it out."

Rex puts on the glasses and melts back into the trees. The rest of you start rolling away in the van before the HRT arrives.

You see it all go down over Rhun's borrowed glasses. The HRT members, in full-body armor, come pouring out of the treeline around the clearing to find Lance sitting in front of the campfire, still eating marshmallows.

"HELLO OFFICERS! Who wants marshmallows? I've got enough to shar-ow! That's my SHOULDER, officer, not a water pump! Be a little more gentle, would you? I'm not resisting arrest! See, I'm coming! Hey, do they have open mic nights in prison? I've got some GREAT stand-up bits I've been meaning to try ou- OW! Got it, got it, right to remain silent and all that."

As Lance is led away, the rest of the HRT head down into the earthworks and, after a few minutes of poking around, emerge and give a hand sign Rex informs you means "all clear". The HRT then shoot out the wooden struts at the mouth of the tunnel, causing it to collapse.

As you're driving back, Sudo calls in over your comms. "Hey, Redd?"

"Yes?"

"I just remembered something that's... kind of important."

"What is it, Sudo?"

"Well... down in Dallas, I was talking to Lance, and he told me he had this drone, Lance 2.0? Its a sophisticated humanoid drone, like one of those robo-girlfriends you see people in the IJS getting? Except he made it to look like him. I THOUGHT that the Lance in the clearing was it, but I'm pretty sure that's the real deal. Not 100%, I can't be that sure unless I get close enough to, you know, READ him-" (QM note: Sudo has electroceptors thanks to SURGE) "-but keep an eye out for the drone. He might use it to try something."

"Thanks for the heads-up, Sudo."

Its been a long day, and part of you ACHES for some sleep. However, you do feel like this isn't over yet.

One Lance is bad enough, but TWO of the fuckers is some really spooky shit.

And if Redd is the one who finds the Lance bot, try to disable it with some paradoxes like:
>There is an exception to every rule, except this one.
>I am lying to you right now.

"We need to find this drone, NOW!"

"How the 'ell are we gonna do THAT, exactly? The bleeding doppelganger could be ANYWHERE in the Seven Arcs!"

"We'll have to search, then. Lance is good, but he can't turn invisible."

"Dear gods I hope he can't."

"Rex, you take the wheel. Sudo and I are going to hunt him down in the Matrix."

>Action: locate Lance 2.0 SUCCESS

It took you 12 hours. 12 Eye-bleedingly-long hours to find it. But now, at 1 PM, just three hours before the first shot is fired at the Urban Brawl game, you've pin-pointed Lance 2.0, in a small, off-the-map warehouse in the middle of a D-zone in Durham. You would have missed it, except for the suspiciously-high Matrix traffic and a report of a local comedy club in the area being crashed by an unknown individual engaging in a mixture of absurdist, surrealist, shock, and insult comedy. You KNOW you have to go, but you also know both you and Sudo are wrecks.

>Go to the warehouse (optional: grab some Long Haul on the way).

>>969336
"Sudo... take a break... you have... earned it..."

"You... fucking bet... I did... but I'll... pass... just... get... me...some Long Haul..."

"If... you... are sure..."

You stumble out into the hall and mumble to Rhun to get some Long Haul for you and Sudo, then drive herself and you out to the warehouse.

>1 dose of Long Haul bought: 12216 nuyen remaining in accounts.

As you feel the rush of chemicals and hormones start working its magic, you find a giddy, childlike sensation rising out of your stomach. You could get used to this stuff...

>High on Long Haul: no need for sleep for the next four days. Crash effect: sleep for 8d6 hours. WARNING: Next use in 1 month carries risk of addiction.

By the time you pull into the warehouse lot, you are more awake and alert than you think you've ever been. Rhun looks at you from across her Ford Americar.

"So, yeh wanna just kick the door down and smash the drone with me sword?"

>Yes, let's do that.

>No, let's sneak in.

>No, let's just try to go in

"As cathartic as that would be for all of us... let us try the INDIRECT approach."

The two of you stalk around the building until you locate an open (well, busted-out) window near a pile of boxes. Rhun vaults in first, and a minute later pokes her head over and waves you in.

You clamber into the window, and find a stack of black boxes positioned nearby to lower yourself onto. You look around at the inside of the warehouse.

A couple-dozen matresses have been carefully laid out against one of the long walls. By the state of the blankets and pillows, they've been slept in for a while. Crudely-painted blue-and-orange posters and banners hang from the walls and ceiling:

LIFE IS A JOKE! LAUGH ABOUT IT!

GIVE ME HUMOR OR GIVE ME DEATH!

DEATH UNTO THOSE WHO INSULT GROUCHO!

GOT MILK?

All of them have the A-C logo dead center above the words. Across the room from you is a pile of scavenged servers and holoscreens, the former whirring like a VTOL coming in low while the latter show footage from cameras all over the city. A chair is set in front of a massive master control console. And seated in that chair...

It looks identical to Lance, as it taps away at a keyboard, composing some kind of word document. Its chest rises and falls in time with simulated breathing. Its eyes are moist and watery, instead of glass replicas over a pair of cameras. It even occasionally scratches at itself as if it itched. But, if Sudo is right, this isn't Lance, but a drone made to impersonate him.

Lance 2.0 (?) doesn't seem to have noticed you yet, and it seems to be the only other entity in the room.

"Rhun, it's the drone. Take it down, but do not damage it too mu-"

"GOTYAYAFILTHYCUNT!"

Rhun rushes in and brings her greatsword overhead before dropping it HARD onto Lance 2.0's knees. You hear the squeal of metal as the knees give way.

"Nice to see you getting into the spirit of things, guys! Break stuff, yeah! So, what took you so long?!"
