You’ve slept the day away so there's no need to rush now. You take your time and get dressed. As you’re leaving the common room, your housemates starting to come back from dinner. You pass by them and make your way through the dungeons. You look for Severus and Rowan on your way, but can't seem to find them. They must still be in the Great Hall eating.

Its their lost you think to yourself as you wait for a staircase to stop moving so you can climb it. The castle ceases to amaze you and you know it'll take a couple years to see every bit of it. You stop at the top of the staircases, near the entrance to a class that goes into an attic, when you faintly hear someone grunt out in pain below. You look down, trying to spot the person the sound came from. You finally notice, near the portrait of a fat lady, Professor McGonagall kneeling over a student.

You can't hear what she's saying to the student, but it looks like they may have tripped and she's making sure they're alright. She seems too busy with the student to notice you. The student finally raises up from the ground, albeit quite shakily. McGonagall helps them and you catch a brief glimpse of the students. You know who it is; none other than Remus Lupin. He looks the worst you’ve seen him yet. They make their way down the stairs carefully and are out off your view.

It feels like you waited forever for them to pass. You're still confused on how they popped up out of nowhere.

You give Remus and McGonagall some time to distance themselves from you. Whatever is happening, Remus probably wouldn't want you seeing him even worse than before. McGonagall is probably taking him to the Hospital Wing anyway, so it wouldn't make sense to slow them down. You make you way down the stairs without accident and begin walking down a new corridor.

You walk for a while, not really trying to watch where you’re walking, just studying everything around you. The castle is beyond age and the secrets it must hold could limitless. Though it seems during your daydreaming, you’ve managed to get yourself lost. “Well shit” you mumble, looking around, “Where the hell am I?”

Almost as if merely waiting for you to ask the question, something behind you rattles out “You’re near the kitchens my good sir!” You can help but jump, whipping around with your wand out. But you confused to see nothing but suit of armor and stone wall.

Not just ready to walk off without at least trying to find out who was talking to you, you walk up to the armor. Your mother had a mirror that would help her get ready and spout off beauty tips, maybe Hogwarts has something similar. You gingerly knock on the helmet, not really knowing a better idea. There's a moment of silence after you knock, then suddenly the helmet’s visor shoots up.

“HELLO” the helmet yells out in a jolly voice. You jump back, wand ready. The suit laughs at you and you give whatever it is an annoyed look. “Sorry to have startled you my friend! I could not resist!” it says, letting out laugh and patting its breastplate, the clangs echoing down the hall. You give it an odd look, not sure how to deal with the obviously magic suit of armor.

“Who are you?” you ask the suit. He raises his arm in a salute and says proudly, “Conrad Cornerway the Third, Knight and Protector of this realm!” You give him a confused look. You didn't think it’d have an actual name. This is obviously a heavily charmed and enchanted suit, way beyond any magic anyone in this school other than teachers are capable of doing.

The suit looks down at you, giving you a spooky feeling when you look into the now opened helmet to see nothing but black.You push forward and introduce yourself and the metal hand grips yours, cold and firm. You begin to talk to Conrad, nothing complicated. Simple stuff; does he like the school, is he happy, so on and so on. Conrad seems to enjoy your interaction immensely and explains that he usually likes to keep quiet and when he does talk most students are spooked off or think he's Peeves.

You also learn that unless the castle is being attacked or ordered by a teacher or the Headmaster, he must remain standing. He seems to very sad about that, expressing his desire to “stretch these rusty old bones”. You Conrad converse for a while, when you notice its late. Past curfew late. Conrad tells you that no teachers are currently on this floor. Perks of being a castle knight you suppose. You say a goodbye to Conrad and he tells you to come visit him anytime. It is late, but you’ve still got the energy to explore the castle if you wanted.

It’s late. Way too late for you to be out wandering in the halls. You’d rather not spend time in detention, so you being your way back your dorms. But you aren't quite sure where you even are now. You wish you had payed more attention when you were walking or asked Conrad for directions. You hope you’ll be able to talk your way out of trouble, if you are to be caught by a teacher. You keep walking, hoping you’ll bump into a familiar looking area soon.


And eventually you do. You take a couple steps out to the court yard, looking around. Everything is covered in a pale glow from the full moon. You finally see a corridor that you know leads straight to the dungeons and jog to it. You're nearly a quarter of the way down the hall when you hear it. You barely catch the first part, a distant screaming. You think it must be Peeves, but that's quickly pushed out when you hear it again. Its pained and hurt, calling out. A howl. Your blood runs cold and you run.

You don't stop running until you reach the damp stretch of wall, signifying you've made it to the common room. You spit out the password and rush inside. As you catch your breath, you survey the room. It seems that only a couple older students are up. Lucius is by the fireplace, chatting with some of his friends. You still have no idea what you heard, it could have been any number of magical creatures, only that it scared the hell out of you.

You end up walking to the two older girls, feeling more than a little intimidated. They both don't seem to notice you walk up, or at least they’re acting like they haven't noticed. You can never really tell with Slytherins or girls. You glance quickly at the brown haired girls book and are surprised to recognize it. It looks like a newer edition of Spellman’s Syllabary, the ancient runes book you recently checked out.

“Mind if I join you two?” you say, unsure if your nervousness has crept into your voice. They both instantly look at you and you feel PANIC, but you quickly steel yourself. The blond girl opens her mouth to say something, her glare shooting killing curses at you, but she's interrupted by her companion. “Of course, you may Mr…..?”, the brown haired girl says to you, giving you a soft smile. You sputter out, “S-Selwyn. Cyril Selwyn.” Her smile turns to a small grin. She pats the chair by her, motioning for you to sit by her. You quickly make you way over and sit down. “Well Mr.Selwyn,my name is Andromeda Black.” the brown hair girl says. “And this is my sister Narcissa.” she says, lazily point to the blond. She gives a fake smile to the both of you and goes back to writing. Andromeda looks back at you, “Don’t mind her. She's just mad because she waits till the last minute to do her homework.” Narcissa doesn’t say anything to that, though you notice her sneer as she writes. Andromeda begins telling you that she was about to begin studying runes and that you can help.

Eager to learn more about the new subject you’ve picked up, you shake your head . Andromeda smiles a thanks at you and takes her wand out. Pointing out in front of her, she mutters a spell and conjures a stack of flashcards. They shuffle themselves in the air and float out in front of you, the english definition facing you. For the next hour or so you sit with Andromeda, helping her memorize the runes, chatting now and again. Eventually you all decide it’d be better to get some sleep before class the next morning and get up and go to your dorms. Andromeda says goodbye and thank you, telling you that she’ll see you around.

You dress into more comfortable clothes and jump into your bed. Sleep quickly overtakes you, and your dreams are filled with ancient runes and spooky magical creatures.

You’re also doing well in Charms and you’ve mastered a couple spells to prove it, much to the joy of Professor Flitwick. You’ve also surprised yourself in Astronomy, second in the class only to a Ravenclaw girl named Pandora Spero, whom you’ve grown accustomed to studying with and partnering up with during class. She speaks in a ethereal voice and seems to be stuck in a constant day dream but you enjoy her company.


You’ve also been hanging out Severus and Rowan. Practically being around one another 24/7 helps and you’ve all become friends. You do notice that both the boys seem to subtlety seek the approval of the older Slytherin gang, particularly Lucius Malfoy’s. When you aren’t with your Slytherin friends, you’ve taken to studying and talking with Remus. You enjoy his quiet wit and studious habits, yourself learning something new from him.

You’ve taken to occasionally helping him with his map. Its coming together nicely, but still far off from being done. You’ve noticed that Remus seems to leave the castle at least once a month. When confronted he sadly explained of his mother's failing health and how Remus is allowed to visit. You haven't said anything about his Absence on the 2nd, but you’ve got a odd feeling about his explanation for the whole thing.

James Potter and his newly formed group friends, Remus one of its members, have taken to causing trouble in Hogwarts. Their ability to pull pranks while avoiding most trouble thrown their way is surprising. Your friendship with Remus and James seems to have payed off a little; you’re not as targeted as other Slytherins. Though Black seems to have had it out for Severus, constantly annoying him during and after class. It hasn’t built up much, both Severus and Sirius not flat out dueling in the halls just yet, but you can feel it’s close to becoming a problem.

Its December 9th, 1971 and Hogwarts is covered with a fresh blanket of snow. You awake, thankful of the wood stove in the middle of your dorm, radiating heat. You wipe the sleep from your eyes and get ready for the day. Semester exams are upon you and everyone is feeling the pressure, especially the Fifth and Seventh years. You can't help but be a little nervous too, but you’re confident in your ability to pass all your exams with all Acceptables at the very least.

People hustle around the common room, getting ready for their day. You don’t see Severus or Rowan anywhere. You probably could look for them before class or go get something to eat.

You take your time, scanning the room again. You notice Rowan in the knick of time, just before he walked out of the common room. He tells you that Sev has already gone to breakfast, presumably to eat with Lily. You should’ve guessed. You accompany Rowan to the Great Hall, chatting while you walk. Rowan is apparently going to France with his parents for Holidays to visit family. When he asks you what you’re doing, you can't give him an answer, You’ve yet to decide where you’ll be staying for the winter Holidays. You should probably get on that sooner rather than later.


You and Rowan quickly grab food and eat, surprised to not see Lily or Sev anywhere. You do see Remus and his friends, and wave. You’ll probably see them in class. As you eat, owls begin to fly into the Great Hall, dropping their deliveries. You’re unsurprised to to your family owl fly to you, stopping only for a little to nibble some bacon and then its off. You open your letter, reading it while eating. It's your parents, mainly your mothering, saying how much they miss you and that you better be studying for exams. At the end, your mother asks you what you plan to do for Holidays.

You remember your mother's goodbye at the train station and you realize how much you miss your parents. You quickly write a letter back, letting them know you’ll be coming home for Holidays. Once you’re done, you tuck it into you bag until you can get it delivered. Rowan pats your shoulder, telling you that you both should leave before class starts. You both make your way to you class, this mornings class being D.A.D.A. Finally arriving to the class just in time, you push open the door.


Professor Walten isn't in the class yet, as he usually starts a little late. You scan the room as Rowan goes and takes seat on the Slytherin side of the room. You’re annoyed and confused to see James and his gang are already in their seats. James, Black, and a short mousy haired boy named Peter Pettigrew stand in front of their desk, joking around with one another. Remus sits near them but by himself, sketching out more of his map before class. Severus is the only Slytherin sitting on the Gryffindor side, talking to Lily who sits beside him.

You give Rowan a little wave as you walk towards Remus. He gives a quick smile as a reply and begins to unpack. You put your stuff by your seat and plop down by Remus. He doesn't react at all, as if he knew you were coming. He stops sketching and greets you, asking how you’ve been. James and the others don't seem to notice you and Remus, but some other Slytherins shoot you annoyed looks. You ignore them and listen to Remus as he talks about the map. He explains that he's researching a spell that’ll help with the mapping, cutting the time it’ll take to make it in half.

Before you can respond, the Professor's office door swings open to reveal Professor Walton. He wears a travel leather robe, his hair messier than ever. He walks to the front of the class and begins the lesson. “Today, you’ll be learning to duel.” he announces, and murmurs break out. Dueling usually isn't covered until Second year. Walten holds up a hand and continues, “You will try to learn at least ONE of the spells I’ve written on the board. The second half of class, you will pair with the person beside you and duel. You see James and Sirius shake excitedly and Remus scoffs and rolls his eyes at them. You chuckle and turn to the board and see what you’re being given to work with. You know that you don't know any of the spells, but you could probably one easily. Two if you’re lucky and can get it down in time.
