This vote was kinda hard to tally but as far as I can tell this sentiment was the winner.

You are Brianna la Croix, Captain of the immortal /Pallbearer/, and here in the vast Hoard of stolen treasures it maintains, you have a difficult choice to make.

Kat has a point; things in the Sunless Sea will only really get better when Lora is freed and can clean house. But things aren't necessarily as simple as 'just focus on the priority'; people's lives, homes, and families are on the line.

Your friend's life is on the line.

"We're not leaving Flitter behind," you tell Kat and, more importantly, Nathan. "I'm not doing this as the kind of person who leaves her friends to die. Plus I have a reasonable suspicion that if we asked Lora to deal with Jack, she wouldn't."

"Why not?" Nathan asks.

"She lets ghosts exist in the first place, Nate. Do you really think she's in the business of telling others what to do with their deaths? She was going to let John go until he /asked/ to die."

Nate, Kat, and Whisper shift uncomfortably at that, but nod, one after the other.

"So we're going to go get Flitter, and then we're going after the /Lonesome Dirge/," you tell them. "Whisper, please return to my sister and inform her that we need a way of detecting an immortal."

"Aye ma'am," the explorer shadow answers, snapping a crisp salute. She zips away, and you put a hand on the weapon rack next to you and sigh deeply.

"I'm sorry," Kat murmurs, at your feet. You look down and see your shadow curled up around her witchlight with a guilty cringe.

"You didn't do anything wrong, Kat," you murmur. "Thank you for speaking up."

"Bri, I -"

"Don't you start either, Nathan."

"...Okay," the Hero agrees, after a moment. "Do we want to get back abovedecks?"

"Yeah. Let's do that."

You make your way back up, leaving Scribbles below to talk with her new - let's say 'friend', for the moment, and try not to dwell too long on what's going to happen later if she falls in love and you have to kill the ship.

You do have to kill the ship. Don't you?

A sullen sailor informs you after awhile that the ship has taken on supplies, and you get your companions (minus Scribbles) to join you at the helm.

"Do you know where the island is with Flitter on it?" you ask, plainly.

"I can navigate us there," Emily confirms, with confidence. "It's going to be a bit."

"That's fine. Get with the helmsman and set a course. We're getting a move on."

A flurry of orders gets passed through the crew. Somewhere in the bustle of getting ready to cast off, Rachael comes back on deck and gets involved in the process, which is good because it stops the crew from giving you their hateful and/or confused glares.

This is going to be a long trip.

By interacting with the blade, it would show Rachael that we're not wholly unappreciative about the gift. Really, really pissed about the circumstances that surrounded getting it, but making the sword useable would be a decent starting point to douse the fires we set in tbe bridge.

Gotta play with the awesome artifact, though if Rachael DOES pop in, we should simply point out how fucking stupid it was to try bribing Brianna. Like, seriously, she's a shoe-in for the Dungeon Dumbass award.

Oh, we're not fighting an immortal, just tracking one. Flitter is Fae, after all. It's Jack we'll have to deal with.

As for keeping Emily and Catherine with us, I'm with you. Never really liked splitting the party unless absolutely necessary. Plus, Lora asked that we try very hard not to hurt the exceedingly dangerous sea serpent, as a favor to the Forgemaster.

No one down there seems happy with you right now, so you're going to stay and fondle your long, slightly curved bone.

No, /you/ are avoiding your feelings of guilt and uncertainty with dick jokes.

The hilt of the machete has a certain reassuring warmth. You wonder at its weight; you may not be an explorer, but you're fairly certain one hundred percent of the point of a machete is being a sword that is also an axe, and its light construction begs the question of how it will hack through brush or other obstacles.

Still, despite the annoyance coming off of the blade, something feels /correct/ about it. It rests comfortably at your hip, without feeling odd the way a new blade probably ought to. Like it was made for you.

"What do you do?" you murmur to yourself, leaning against the railing while you look down at the hilt of the blade. "There's so many stories..."

You stand up. The machete just let out a feeling of smug satisfaction.

"...Right, you're Sorrows," you murmur. "Jackson la Croix named you Reunion, though. Why you and not the compass, I wonder?"

<Wouldn't you like to know.>

You almost drop the machete.

<Those glittery wastes of skin from the Mistlands make sapient things from their bones and you don't bat an eyelash, but an angel does it and you're shocked> Reunion drawls. <They don't make you like they used to, la Croix. If I can call you that.>

"You can," you hiss, irritably. "What's your problem?"

<We're mounting a rescue mission for a fey and I somehow suspect this doesn't end with splitting her open and doing divination with her entrails. That's what.>

"She's my friend," you tell the machete, firmly.

<Well look at you with the refined taste. At least you took me out of that forsaken vault. Some of the other things in there have gone...mad. Fey are mad to begin with, obviously, but, you know. Mad from isolation and the ship murmuring in their minds all the time.>

"Look, Reunion, I already have one voice in my head. His name is Sir Fetch and I like him quite a bit, and if you're just going to be an asshole I'm gonna have him shout you down every time you talk."

<I am fully prepared, my queen> Fetch confirms primly.

Reunion scoffs. <Since when did the family become so soft? Is the pixie your lover?>

"Listen here you tip-heavy cock bone," you snap in a low hiss. "You've been down here for Gods only know how long, with absolutely nothing to do but think about how much you hate fairies, but you know what? The family's grown. We've changed. We became different people, and what you call 'being soft' got everyone I know and love killed and /I am going to perpetuate it, because it's better than being murdering zombie fuckers/. If you're going to complain about me saving my friend's life I will stick you back in the fucking Hoard -"

</No/> Reunion begs, terror and desperation coloring its voice. <No! Please no, not that, anything but that, don't, don't, I'll do anything...>

Your anger softens. "Hey, I - look, I didn't mean it..."

<Don't leave me alone again> Reunion whispers, fear in its voice.

"I won't," you murmur. "I won't, it'll be okay."

<I've been alone so long> Reunion murmurs. <They put me in a shrine and they worshiped me and I was holy. I could never be touched, because mortal hands were profane. They put me in a box for so long...>

"Captain," the lookout calls. "We've spotted land."

"Isn't there something you say for that?" you ask, calling across the din.

"Captain, don't give me cheek," the lookout warns you. You realize, with a pang, that he's maybe twenty-three, twenty-four, and human. "There's a castle of ice ahead."

"Is there a spyglass available?" you ask, and lo and behold, a spyglass is provided. You look in the indicated direction and find a fortress of ice, complete with high, thick walls, spiraling towers that gleam in the witchlight, The level of detail is incredible; the walls are decorated with relief images of, you realize, Flitter - Flitter's life, Flitter's deeds, victories, and failures.

Light glows from inside the fortress, reflected by unseen mirrors. At first you think the walls are unmanned, and then you see them move - spiny, almost cat-like creatures made entirely of ice.

Frostlings. Great.

You lower the spyglass and let out a long breath. Amy lands next to you and tilts her head.

"He's gone full specter," you explain. "...And evidently knows how to summon ice elementals."

"Jack didn't have ice powers," Amy points out.

"He died coated in magical ice, Ames."

"...Fuck."

><Well look at you with the refined taste. At least you took me out of that forsaken vault. Some of the other things in there have gone...mad. Fey are mad to begin with, obviously, but, you know. Mad from isolation and the ship murmuring in their minds all the time.>

... I don't why I wasn't expecting more subtle horror from the ghost ship, but okay. The ship's Hoarde doesn't seem cursed the traditional way, but we may want to look into making sure that gets unfucked as well.

><I've been alone so long> Reunion murmurs. <They put me in a shrine and they worshiped me and I was holy. I could never be touched, because mortal hands were profane. They put me in a box for so long...>

Reunion strikes me as being kind of similar to Robert in that he's an /old/ La Croix, with all the fun that entails. But Reunion was also a tool. One made to be incredibly practical. Not a sword, but a machete. And he was kept from being useful and fulfilling his purpose.

Note, this doesn't preclude him being an asshole.

>You look in the indicated direction and find a fortress of ice, complete with high, thick walls, spiraling towers that gleam in the witchlight, The level of detail is incredible; the walls are decorated with relief images of, you realize, Flitter - Flitter's life, Flitter's deeds, victories, and failures.

... Well, this isn't creepy at all.

>"He's gone full specter," you explain. "...And evidently knows how to summon ice elementals."

Fucking hell.

Really wish I'd gotten more involved way back when to vote Jack all the way dead.

I kind of want to try reasoning with him, but Jack's gone full specter. Logic no longer applies in his icy world. Even money right now Flitter's stuck inside a cage of ice, no matter how much Jack knows she would hate it.

"Miss Trust," you call out. "If you would join me, along with whoever runs those cannon?"

"That'd be the Chief Gunner, Captain. Mister Sykes!" A dwarf snaps to. "The Captain requires our presence at the helm."

Your compatriots join you, making you keenly aware of exactly how little room there is up here. You fold your arms and let out a long breath. "I'm going in there," you explain to Rachael. "I need to know some things about /Pallbearer's/ capabilities before I do, because if this goes south you may end up fighting a large amount of ice elementals."

"That would be unfortunate, Captain," Rachael notes. "The ship is a tough nut to crack but we aren't invulnerable. Tear a crew member apart and they die, or something like it. The ship can be peeled apart, damaged, and I suppose eventually destroyed. The...former Captain," Rachael seems hesitant to describe him that way, "theorized that as long as at least one crew member survives, we can steal a new ship and it will become /Pallbearer/, but we've never actually tested that theory, since..."

"Since if you're wrong, the curse would be broken and everyone is dead," you agree, nodding. "Alright. How are you on iron weapons?"

"Crew can't touch 'em, Captain," Mister Sykes tells you. "Burns like devilry."

"...You know the implications of that are horrifying, right?" River says flatly.

"Well aware, Miss Elf," Sykes answers.

"Okay. Sorcerers?"

"Some," Rachael answers. "Not enough."

"Then here's what we do," you decide. "I'm going ashore with Nate, Emily, Amy, and the assorted minions. Catherine, Scribbles, and River will stay to help with the defense of the ship, along with Whisper and Tina. /If/ things go south, we may need to signal you for a hole to escape from. I'll leave Sir Fetch here to give you that signal."

"It is my honor, my queen," Fetch agrees.

"Listen to River and Catherine when it comes to fighting the elementals," you tell Rachael and Sykes, firmly. "They know what they're doing with those. Hopefully whatever's binding them will break when we banish Jack, but if it doesn't this is going to get ugly."

"I suppose it's too much to hope for some decent plunder out of this," Rachael complains. "...Still, you're the Captain."

"Chin up, Rachael," you tell her, with a sideways grin. "Jack was a collector of artifacts in life. He may have continued that in death. Yew!"

The geargrinder looks up at you from down below. "Yes, Missus la Croix?"

"We're going to go finish killing Jack and rescue Flitter. I do believe you wanted in on that."

"Yes, Missus la Croix."

You take another look at the castle and sigh. "Get us as close as you reasonably can. We'll wait for the cover of night."

The setting of the witchlights is an interesting affair. They don't snuff out; instead, they sink beneath the waves and tuck themselves into what are presumably caverns or tunnels explicitly for them. It can't stop all of their light from escaping, and their illumination spills into the sea beneath you, giving it warm bands of fractured light cut by deep shadows through which you can barely make out the shadows of massive fish.

"...I could live here," Amy comments, looking down at the water with a warm expression. "Room to fly, things to do, interesting places to live, and it's...beautiful."

"It is," you agree softly. "Let's go."

You pile Hati and Skoll onto the smaller boat first (what do they call these? You're used to dealing in rafts and canoes), then board everyone else. A pair of crewmen from /Pallbearer/ come with you, to man the oars and to guard the craft for your eventual extraction. They have orders to get out while the getting is good if they think things are going south.

The oarsmen keep things astoundingly quiet, avoiding the bands of light that ripple through the water, and bring you to a stretch of beach in the shadow of the western tower. The good news is that the sentries shouldn't be able to see you. The bad news is, there's not a lot of good options for getting inside.

"Why does this thing have no door?" Emily asks, in vague disbelief.

"It's a prison designed by a ghost, Emily. He doesn't need doors. Okay, Amy -"

<Wait> Reunion cuts in. <Wait. I can make an entrance.>

"Quietly?" you ask the machete, looking down at it while the others blink at you.

<Yes, but...it's been a long time> Reunion admits. <I have not had the chance to store up much energy and I am out of practice. It may be some time before I can do it again.>

"...Right, you're a machete. You're for pathfinding," you note, musingly. "...Okay, that's an option..."

You are Amy the Dungeonbreaker, still not quite used to thinking of yourself as 'Amy la Croix' but, y'know, you've got time for that. Nathan caught on to it really quickly, which almost saddens you a little. You never saw anything wrong with 'Bookchild'.

Bri's pulling out that weird kinda-curved-but-not-really bone sword-thing she picked up recently. She gives it a couple of test swings - it seems oddly light, considering how wide the blade is - and then nods to herself. "I'm going to make a hole," she tells the rest of you. "We'll go in quietly. Hopefully we can get Flitter and get out without much incident or at least without running into Jack."

"I'll take point," you agree. "Can that sword-thing cut through ice?"

"It's a machete, Ames," Nathan explains gently. "...And no."

"Reunion says it won't need to," Bri explains. She touches the wall with the tip of the blade, and a faint shimmer forms in the ice, rippling out from the edge of the blade. The wall shifts, the artwork moving with it, until standing before you is a pair of ornate double doors, still made all of ice, decorated with Flitter's deeds.

Everyone stares in faint disbelief at the blade.

"Your machete has good taste," you comment, at last, because someone has to. You clap Brianna on the shoulder and move to the front of the group. The icy hinges make no sound when you push the door in and see the world's most surprised frostling.

You lunge, Shame clearing its sheath in one smooth pull, and bury the demonic dagger in the ice cat's neck. It makes a deflated sighing sound and melts into a puddle at your feet.

"What can we expect to fight?" you ask Bri, wiping the sizzling water from your blade.

"Frostlings, frost kites," your lover - excuse you, wife - says with certainty. "Maaaaybe some ice constructs but Jack doesn't strike me as the type. Rimewraiths, maybe."

"That name sounds bad," Emily speaks up. Her half-blade is in a low guard; she looks around with visible unease.

"It is," Bri confirms. "They look like mist, right until you breathe them in and they choke you out from the inside."

"Gods," Nathan shudders. "/Why/?"

"Wait, let me guess," you cut in. "They breed in there?"

"Got it in one," Bri agrees. "They need frozen air tinged with life, and your lungs are full of it."

"Okay, so if I see mist, Blame comes out," you agree. "...I can't tell where the light is coming from. Where do you think Jack would keep Flitter?"

"Probably some creepy cage or something," Emily mutters.

"No," you murmur after a moment, shaking your head. "Pixies hate bottles..."

> Search the lower floors

If I were a crazy paranoid ghost focused on "protecting" someone, I'd make a ton of obvious defenses around a point, then set the place to collapse on intruders while the person I'm protecting is somewhere else. Preferably close enough to gain some of the benefits from the defenses. If Jack is paranoid enough, he could be expecting that we expect him to make a trap and use the towers instead, and set them to self destruct as well while Flitter's in some kind of underground bunker. But Jack might expect that we expect that and use the towers while setting the lower areas to collapse. Also, the longer we stay here the more time we're giving Jack to notice we're here and spring an ambush or something.

Where is Flitter going to be? Jack didn't just build this to keep others out, he made it to keep Flitter in - well, in theory, anyway. If she wants to stay...

You're not sure what to do if she wants to stay, honestly. You can't imagine it, but her and Jack had a different relationship than you did with your own captor.

You force /that/ line of thought out of your mind and straighten up. "We'll head for the throne room," you tell the others. "If we're wrong it's got the most ways out."

"...Don't you mean, 'she'll probably be there?'" Emily asks.

"Not really," you and Nate say at the same time. You flash your lover - sorry, husband! - a grin and high-five him before taking point. Any traps in here won't be mechanical - solid ice is just a /little/ shit for moving parts - so you keep an eye out for the telltale signs of enchantments that might contain magical traps.

But despite stealthily picking your way through the corridors, you aren't seeing much that's suspicious. If you'd designed this place, the traps would be hidden in spiderweb cracks in the ice so that the patterns of lines would be harder to pick out, but everything is smooth and clean, to an extent that suggests that Jack makes his elementals polish the ice.

He built this fortress to defend Flitter. So where are the defenses?

You get everyone to press to the wall with a quick hand gesture and watch as a cloud of mist blows through the cross-section ahead, on a breeze that isn't there. You all wait a long moment before continuing on. This place is a damn maze, and -

Nevermind, there's the stairs.

"This place is awfully understaffed for a fortress," Nate comments as you ascend. "Where's the swarming armies? They can't /all/ be on the walls."

"I mean, they could be," Brianna muses. "Nothing says they can't. Who knows what Jack's limits are right now or how freely he's spending the coin of his power."

"Shh," you warn, gently. Something is wrong.

The door at the top of the stairs is heavy wood. From the look of it, it was stolen from something else and bolted into place with ice.

Jack might be paranoid enough to disguise the goal as an obvious trap, and make what seems like the real goal the actual trap. He might also think we would think that and make both traps, and just move Flitter somewhere else.

"I don't like this," you announce in a low murmur. "This is a trap. We're going back."

Emily opens her mouth to question you and gets a subtle shake of the head from Bri. The Chosen of Death frowns and falls in line when the group starts going back down the stairs.

"What's your reasoning?" she asks at the bottom of the stairs, because some people do not understand head shakes as an idea.

"Felt wrong," you answer, with a shrug.

"That's not a reason," Emily presses.

"Is to me. I miiiiight be able to give you detailed reasons why if I had thirty minutes to think about it, but," you shrug. "It felt wrong. We'll go back to it later if we need to."

"This is a rescue -"

"Enough," Bri whispers, sharply, cutting Emily off. "This is what Amy does. If you want to argue about it, either do it when we're done or when we're dead. Boat's back that way if you have an issue with it."

"That's a little harsh love," you start, but Emily cuts you off with a sigh and just shakes her feathered head.

Great. Drama, and with Bri acting so odd already.

You flick your wings and pace ahead, keeping a weather eye out but, again, nothing seems, well, defended in here. You're starting to wonder if Jack's finally lost his shit. Where's the entrance to -

"I'm an idiot," you say out loud.

"Why?" Nate asks, frowning in worry.

"Flitter flies. Jack goes through walls. /Any/ set of stairs in here is a trap," you explain. You get on your knees and press your eye to the ice and sure enough, you can make out the fuzzy image of another room below you. "She's beneath our feet. She has been the whole time. Everyone get back."

The others get a safe distance from you while you apply Shame to the floor, melting a widening circle in the ice.

You realize the error in your plan when the ice cracks beneath you and you go through with a loud yelp. Freezing water coats you in a rude splash, though harpy magic (thanks Mom!) stops you from snapping your legs like twigs.

Down here, the room is full of treasures and food. Fruits, vegetables, smoked fish packed in ice, and more are interspersed with paintings, clay pots repaired with gold, and doors. Dozens and dozens of doors in various states of repair, each showing signs of water damage or deep cracks where fingers gripped them with inhuman strength.

"Lady of Ravens," you murmur.

"Ames?" Nathan calls down.

You toss your rope up to Nate, who catches it deftly. "Come on down," you invite the others. "Carefully."

You explore the room while Nathan hammers a spike into the floor above with which to secure the rope. None of the doors seem to actually be entranceways - even the few still in their torn-up frames lean against the wall or stand secured to the icy floor - but all of them have been touched or taken. A few show signs of attempted enchantments but even without magical training you know they didn't take; with rune work that complex, if they were live you'd have noticed well before you got down here.

Quite a few are cracked or gouged, as though struck. The impressions match human fingers.

"Why?" you murmur to yourself. Soaring Song jangles softly in confusion.

A bit of searching while the others drop down turns up a passage, nearly invisible against the backdrop of the rest of the glowing ice. /Now/ you see the cracks in the ice that make you set your feet cautiously and stop every few feet to make everyone else hold stock still while you scratch up the patterns that would do gods-only-know-what to the bodies you're using to hold your souls in.

You hold your arm out to stop Nathan when you start hearing the sobbing. He gives you an exasperated look but you have a hard time feeling sorry since he also has to back down from his instinctive attempt to sprint directly for it.

"This is the same guy that wonders why we call him a Hero," you confide in Emily.

"Why do I think you're using a specific version of that word that I have no familiarity with?" comes the answer.

"...Nevermind."

You pick your way ahead, motioning for the others to hang back. The curve in the tunnel lets out into a small, circular room lit by witchlights. Flitter sits on a little wooden stool, surrounded by her own light, crying her eyes out.

In front of her is a door. You don't know where Jack found an ash wood door down here but this one isn't damaged; it's been set, with care, into the wall and prepared with careful, deliberate marks to contain an enchantment not yet placed on it. You can see the lines of steel to help contain and channel the sorcery, as well as the small key that dangles from the knob by a silver chain.

You give the room a thorough look-over before you speak up. "Flitter?"

The pixie bolts upright in absolute terror. She looks at you and gestures frantically. "You can't be here! You have to go!"

"Flitter, we came to get you," you explain, as gently as you can. "Where's Jack?"

"He's...he's..." the pixie breaks down crying again, her shoulders rocking with the force of her sobs. "He's trying to come back to life," she says miserably. "He thinks he can make another deal. In the Mistlands..."

"...I'm gonna be honest, Flitter, that sounds like an inherently bad idea," you tell the pixie. "That door is involved?"

Flitter nods, her eyes wide and brimming with tears, then yelps when you immediately dig Shame into the ice around the door. The pixie flits up to the ceiling, wringing her hands, while you hack the door out and tuck it under your arm like it weighs nothing which, in fairness, it essentially does at the moment.

"We need to go," you tell Flitter. "Jack could be back any minute and I'd rather be on the nice safe ship with everyone else when that happens."

"He'll go on a rampage when he finds out I'm missing," Flitter protests, wringing her hands harder.

"He's going to go on a rampage /anyway/," you point out, soothingly. "Flitter, we're here to help. We're your friends. We're his friends too, y'know? We wanna make it better."

"Okay," Flitter whispers, her voice small and frightened. She zips down to your shoulder and sits, holding onto your ear for support. "We have to hurry. He could be back any minute. He'll stop in the treasury first..."

"That room back there?" you ask.

"No, that's just the larder. He...Jack...he, I..." Flitter lapses as you rejoin the others, only to speak up again when you all move to the rope by unspoken 'let's get the fuck out' understanding. "He was always sorry that he didn't love me back," she murmurs. "He felt awful about it. I tried to tell him not to, but...so he's been getting me treasures. Anything he can get that he thinks I'd like. My favorite foods, paintings, gold, pots, anything beautiful or interesting, to...to apologize, I think. For a lifetime of me helping him and I don't /want/ any of it."

You nuzzle your cheek against Flitter and jump up to keep watch while the others climb the rope. "Death did a number on the poor guy," you murmur.

"It usually does," Brianna comments, as she hauls herself up. "Ghosts aren't the living any more. They...obsess. And deteriorate."

"I was scared," Flitter whispers. "Scared to be alone. I begged him not to leave me..."

"This isn't your fault," you murmur. Bri starts to open her mouth and you give her a glare the closes it right the fuck back up. "We'll...we'll make it better, okay? We'll make it better."

"How?" the pixie whispers.

"That's actually a good question," Emily agrees.

"Well, for starters I'm burning this door up so he can't go back to fairyland and fuck up his death even more," you tell the both of them. You set the door down and drive Shame into its center. The wood blackens, then ignites, while the others take a firm step back. When you're sure the fire will keep burning on its own, you pluck Shame from the center of the door and stand up. "Let's go."

"I'm sorry," Flitter mutters, miserably.

Poor girl. You brush the top of her tiny head and set out for the exit.

You are Brianna la Croix, and you have a decision to make. You've secured Flitter and are now back to the boat that will take you to the /Pallbearer/ again, but that leaves Jack with his fortress and his elementals, to say nothing of what happens if he can track Flitter - she's the one he's haunting, after all.

And your crew is going to want plunder.

Jack showing up later with an army when we're in the middle of something would be bad. Sending the crew in to loot when the area isn't actually that secure would also be bad.

"It's about to get loud," you warn the others, as the crew members you took with you start to row. You catch Hati and Skoll panting and try not to think too hard about that fact, since they're A. dead and B. right next to you.

Skeletons.

<Fetch, please provide my compliments to Mister Sykes, and get this castle reduced to rubble for me.>

<Aye, my queen> Fetch agrees, obediently.

There is a brief moment of peaceful rowing before the broadside rocks your soul.

You've never heard anything like it. The boom of the guns shatters the peace of the Sunless Sea with its godlike force, making you yelp in surprise and causing Nate to curse and nearly tip the boat. The impact, a split second later later, sprays huge chunks of ice into the freshwater sea and sends the broken bodies of elementals flying.

"Trigger it!" you hear Rachael call. You see the crew members on your ship cover their ears and you do the same, just in time to see someone in the crow's nest of the /Pallbearer/ raise a sling and throw something small and metal.

When it passes over the castle, the embedded cannonballs explode into a storm of shrapnel and flame.

"Why did they have doubts that they could win a fight?" you yell, over the ringing in your ears. Emily's attempt to answer is drowned out by the second volley of cannon fire, followed by the chorus of secondary explosions.

But now the elementals are swarming, and there are a lot more than you'd been expecting. The upper levels must have been positively infested, because now dozens of frost kites are taking off, gripping frostlings in their talons to use as living missiles, and the misty forms of rimewraiths rise from the wreckage of the walls like steam.

The rope ladder to get back onto the ship is thrown down, and you send the others up it while Amy picks up the dogs and flies onto the deck.

You turn just in time to see the shots plunging into the water; more miss than hit, but the ones that hit cleave through the swarming frost kites and fill the air with the tinkle of shattering ice and inhuman screams of pain that echo across the water.

"Orders!" Rachael calls.

"We're fighting it out!" you answer back. "Prepare to be boarded! Keep Rachael and Tina safe so they can take out the rimewraiths!"

You see your sister ignite Sleep in furious balefire, which she throws in long arcs at the oncoming elementals. The first two don't get out of the way fast enough; the others break off into a chaotic swarm.

Then the battle is on deck, and you don't have the time to just watch any more.

You lash out at the first frostling that lands with a fistful of rot that does dick all. "Sic 'em," you order the dogs; Hati and Skoll surge forward and tackle the ice cat, tearing it apart with undead strength.

All around you is chaos. Crew members fight off elementals with heavy boarding axes, ignoring wounds that would bring any conventionally mortal person down. You see Rachael fighting her way towards the bow, her revolver thundering with every careful shot she places.

Out at the fortress, you hear a spectral scream of hate and fury.

Oh, he'll definitely be coming to us. And I don't have a lot of sympathy for these pirates, to be honest. They should be glad we didn't lob balefire at them.

Also, small typo I see? "Keep Rachael and Tina safe". Did you mean River? Or does the First Mate have some special talents we weren't aware of.

Clear the deck as fast as possible, we need to make sure that Jack doesn't have the advantage of numbers.

I did in fact mean River. I'm just on a fucking roll today.

We failed to take care of this properly before. This is our first responsibility, even before the Dungeon: Life for the living, Death for the Dead.
>>

It IS our responsibility, and we DO need to take care of this. Not our first priority though, that's obviously freeing Lora. But do you really want Brianna (who is still kinda meh with her flying suit) to go challenge Jack (who has scary powers over ice as a ghost) over the sea?

No, let's just pummel the shit out of his summons, move on to beating the shit out of his ghost, and then maybe have Emily finish the job with an immediate banishment via her sword.

In the next interlude, we can try to contact Jack in the Sunless Lands so that he and Flitter can have a true and final farewell.

Do we have any of the bone wands left? If so,

Yeah, I don't see flying out to fight being our best move here.

Aight folks, I'ma be straight-up, I tried to focus enough to write this update, ended up fucking off to play videogames, and I think it's gonna be best if I approach this after having more sleep. I'm gonna leave this vote open, with my apologies.

Questions, comments, discussion, feedback, and criticisms remain welcome and appreciated.

Thank you all for reading and participating!
