/qst/ - Quests

Previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/915134/

Concerned, I close my eyes and try again. As I focus, something clicks and I manage to tune out the physical world entirely, down to the gentle humming noise the main console makes that I'd become so used to that I didn't even notice it anymore. Appreciating my first encounter with true silence I search again, free from any distractions. I'm swarmed with the presences of the 30 people in the base -from the strange blankness of Giovanni to the seething frustration as one of the grunts loses a card game for the third time in a row.

A quick sift through the presences finds no trace of my mysterious informant, so I attempt to expand my search further. I meet resistance as I attempt to reach beyond the confines of the base but in my current state of focus, I quickly burst through it. Thousands of presences can be felt further away, some hundreds of times stronger than others. Yet more presences are scattered around the nearby landscape, moving in strange patterns with a sense of purpouse. These smaller presences are definitely not human. Some of them feel whimsical, living in the moment while the vast majority of them have this cold, crystalline feeling. A select few, I flinch away from as they exude a dark, predatory feeling that every fiber of my being tells me to stay away from.

Filtering out these non-human presences leaves a massive blankness around me with the Janitors familiar presence flickering alone in the void. Zooming in, I suddenly can make out some words.

I've almost finished my job here and I'd like to have a lift out of here tomorrow night. I may have company, so I'll need it to be fast. Tell the pilot that I'll turn the signal on when I'm ready. Over. There's a pulse of relief before I hear the next set of words.

Yes, I know. You owe me a feast for taking this job and I'm not settling for anything less. Looker out, I've got someone I need to meet soon.

There's only silence after that, so I see if I can make myself heard.

Who was that you were talking to? I ask

There's a brief surge of panic before I get a reply.

Who is this? How are you in my head?

I send back I find this new method of communication vastly easier than writing in a board. Wouln't you agree?

Looker replies I find it a little disconcerting to be honest.

I tell him that I'm waiting for him and that there's nobody else moving about the base at the moment, so he's clear. I also remind him that he never answered my question.

I'll tell you when I get there. He replies.

While he's on his way over, I ponder what to do.

>Read the last file.
>Explore in my current state.
>Practice fine control.
>Practice that flash from a few nights ago.
>>
>Move aquired: Detect.
Sense an enemies next move and perfectly avoid it. Fails if used in succession. This can be used to dodge undodgeable moves. Practice with this move can use the targets move against them or their teammates.

>Move aquired: Laser focus.
Focussing sharply, the next move will always be a critical hit (Provided it actually connects), causing increased damage and ignoring most defensive bonuses. Of note: A critical hit is different from a critical success and can stack.

>Skill learned: Telepathy.
This skill causes all communications to be in Italics while in use.

>Explore in my current state
Let's examine the complex for ways we could break out. Take note of anything we could reasonably break down with our mind alone.

Also, keep the telepathy thing firmly under wraps for now. The less they know of our true abilities, the better.
>>
>>929536
Nope. I was just messing around. All telepathic communications will be in italics, everything else normal.

I'll call the vote in 15 minutes. Expect slower updates today as I'll be on my phone and doing christmas shopping.

Soooooo,I have seen no reason to betray Giovanni right now

If he offers to be our partner instead of our master I will fully be behind him but we have to wait

Not wanting to be trapped or limited is a pretty standard instinct though, although it doesn't necessarily mean we hate him either.

Unsure if I'll be able to attain this level of focus again anytime soon, I opt to do a little snooping around of my own.

I can't see any physical objects in this state, but the walls of the compound provide a measure of resistance to my psychic probing, allowing me to form a rough mental map of the compound and calculate several routes to the exit.

That done, I push my awareness out as far as possible to learn about the largest presences. The closest one to the north turns out to be a group of five humans. Two presences zip by far above, one full of pride and regal bearing, the other an otherworldly mix of instinct and intellect. To the south lies four presences of honor and justice. As I call my mind back, I realise that the whole nearby area is inundated with a cold, watchful feeling but the source seems to be hiding itself.

I'm jolted back to my own body by the sound of Looker tapping on the glass.

"I said I'd explain who I was talking to when I got here, but if you could wait a second as I need to do something first."

He then reaches around behind the Incubator and pulls out a hidden microphone. He makes a show of turning it off before turning back to face me.

"That was my boss, Anabel I was reporting to before. As you might have figured, I'm not really a member of team Rocket, in fact I work as a detective for the international police."

What are you doing here then? I ask.

"I was looking for you, my friend. I had heard rumors that Team Rocket was building up members again, and wondered why. I started digging and found hints of a secret weapon. I merely followed the evidence and here I am."

My musings on his story are cut short when Looker softly asks "I don't suppose you have any ideas on what you'd like to do once you've escaped do you? "

The question comes as quite a shock. I hadn't given it too much thought, but the one thing that came to mind was...

>Pick any number of the following:
(This is not locking anything in, just an early indication.)

>Explore the world and find my own place out there.
>Attempt to reach my full potential, and surpass it my own way.
> Protect those who need protection.
>Find a kindred spirit out there somewhere.
>Meet the Pokemon I was based off.

Or one of these two:
>Nothing, I'll figure that out after I've escaped.
>Nothing, why do you ask?
>>
>>932122
>>Explore the world and find my own place out there.

I tell Looker The first thing I'd like to do is explore the world. I know there's a big world out there, and here I am stuck inside this tube. A variety of reasons and aspirations come to mind as I say this. Thoughts of meeting my parent, realising my potential and perhaps even finding someone from a similar situation, rise to the top of my thoughts.

Looker, oblivious to that says "On that front, I have some good news. It turns out that you are fully grown already. The only reason you are still in the incubator is because they want you to stay put until their Rocket Ball is complete."

All the more reason to leave, then. I add.

Satisfied with my answers, Looker walks over to the main terminal and begins typing away. Unfortunately the screen is angled away from me, so I can't see what Looker is doing. I decide that seeing as I'm unable to help, I could make better use of my time practicing. I close my eyes and attempt to reach the same state of focus that I was in before, but every time I get close, I hear the clacking of Looker on the keyboard or I get pulled back by the hum of various machines scattered around the lab. Being mentally confined to the inner section of the compound feels cramped after what I'd seen earlier, but I'll just have to endure it for one more day.

After a few minutes of mental patrolling, Looker calls out from his position at the computer "I've left a time-delayed virus inside the computer. At exactly 23 hours from now, the alarm systems will go down and if we're lucky, nobody will notice we're not where we are supposed to be until we're already gone." Looker ends the sentence with a yawn, which I find mysel echoing.

He smiles at that and says "I'd better not keep you up then. Tomorrow will be especially tiring."

After Looker leaves, there's nothing to hold my attention, so I nod off...
I'm awakened by clapping and Doctor Jack is watching me from his usual spot. Giovanni is missing though

"It's time we tested your moves." The doctor calls. "Seenig how Giovanni's not here today, you'd better do as I say."

I'm about to start when I realise that they don't know about the moves I've learned while waiting for Looker. On one hand, I could always use more practice, while on the other hand I don't want them to know the full extent of my abilities.

I don't want to make the doctor suspicious but I'm going to need my energy later, so i'll try to strike a middle ground and only hold a little back.

Doctor Jack says "We'll begin with the basics. I'd like you to start with psychic." He tosses out a pokeball and says"Reuniclus, a demonstration please."

A green blob of a pokemon appears in a burst of light. It launches a lump of psychic energy into the air. The doctor picks up a pencil that was lying around and lobs it in the way of the attack. It shatters immediately and shards fly everywhere, many of them bouncing off the glass of my incubator.

"Now you try."

I launch a similar looking lump of energy into the air and watch as the Doctor tosses a pencil in front of it. Instead of shattering, the pencil slams into the wall, leaving a pile of splinters embedded deep into the wall.

"Fascinating. Fascinating. That's not quite what I expected, but its still amazing. Try again, but let the energy roil a bit more as there isn't always a wall to slam things into."

This time, I exert a little less control over the energy and just lob it. It immediately begins roiling chaotically and I have to fight not to smooth it out. He picks up another pen and tosses it in the way. Just after it leaves his hand, he realises that it was a metal pen and quickly shouts "Reuniclus, Protect. Now!" before diving behind it.

There's a brief crunching sound as the pen hits the energy and vanishes within. Half a second later, sharp pieces of shrapnel fly everywhere, some leaving gouges in the glass protecting me. A shield of light springs up in front of Reniculus just in time and lots of shrapnel crashes into it and ricochets around the room.

After the dust has settled, he stands up and declares "I'd say you've mastered that one. On to the next one."

Over the course of the day, Reuniclus proceeds to demonstrate a variety of moves from Thunder wave to Flamethrower. Sometimes Reuniclus launches Shadow balls at me to break my focus while I'm attempting to use moves, at other times I have to try and fight through paralysis and confusion. Things take a little longer for me than they could, as I don't put my full effort into anything. I feel like I've learned something though as we go through the moves.

The final move for the day is recover. I watch as Reuniclus's body knits itself together. I attempt to mimic it, but I can't seem to make it work quite as well as Reuniclus does.

The doctor says "That was impressive, but I have to admit that I was hoping for slightly more. Giovanni seems able to push you further and harder than I can. Tomorrow, Giovanni wants to battle you to test everything we've done so far."

Theres a slight pause before he continues. "Unfortunately you still can't leave the incubator, so we'll have to limit it to special moves only."

After the doctor has left, I use recover a few times until I feel better.

A out half an hour later, Looker opens the door and takes a moment to survey the state of the lab. There are burn marks all over the floor, shards of metal imbedded in the walls and a wierd pattern in the dust on the floor from when two Thunder waves collided.

He blinks at the carnage before speaking. "The alarms are disabled and I've set up the machine to report normal vital signs. Is there anything you want to take with you as we go, and how would you like to do this?

I pull the files out from under the machine and hand them to Looker, who seals them in plastic and puts them in his backpack. He comments "There should be more in those cabinets over there, if you want them."

Without a word, I pop the hinges and gently lower the door for the ground. Looker packs the files, while I work on breaking the glass surrounding me. All the first shove does is rattle the glass and buffet me with reflected force, but the second one makes cracks appear around the scour marks Reuniclus left. The third shove shatters the glass, resulting in a flood of clear gel and glass shards.

Standing on the base of the broken incubator, I feel cold for the first time as the air flows over my skin. I shudder at the sensation, before refocusing on the situation at hand. A quick thought clears the debris from my path and I step down to the floor. Thankfully walking seems to be instinctual, although my legs protest each movement as they've never been used before.

I steady myself and tell Looker We'd better get going. The longer we wait, the more likely we are to get caught.

Looker says "I couldn't agree more." and heads for the door.

The hallways throughout the base are a maze of pure white corridors and identical looking doors. The effect is spoiled slightly when I notice colored lines running along the ceiling.

While Looker navigates our way through the corridors, I keep scanning the surroundings for any presences. There's a clump of them ahead in what I can only assume is the sleeping quarters. Two presences detach from the group and start moving in this direction.

I inform Looker of this and he says "There's a closet up ahead you can hide in."

We hurry to the janitors closet and I slip inside, just in time. I immediately notice that hidden behind the usual cleaning equipment is a row of fancy bottles filled with an assortment of liquids.

The two presences have stopped just around the corner and appear to be waiting for something. I close my eyes and try to listen in on them.

'He's not moving. Why is he not moving?' one says. The other one replies 'Perhaps he knows and is guarding it to keep it all to himself.'

'That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Come to think of it Bert, why the fuck did you hide the party supplies in the janitors closet?'

As the pair continue to bicker, I assess my options.

I pulse a message to Looker 'The two grunts around the corner are after a whole load of drinks that they stashed in this closet. Could you distract them for a bit while I sneak around the corner?'

'Affirmitive. Just wait for my signal.' Looker thinks before rounding the corner and confronting the pair. 'Now!' He thinks loudly. I quickly exit the closet, but as I leave, my tail catches on a mop handle and it clatters to the floor before I make it to the next corner.

The two goons poke their heads around the corner, just in time to see the tip of my tail vanish around a different corner.

One of them asks "How did a wild pokemon find its way in here?" The other replies "Who cares? Lets hunt it down. Go, Weavile!" "Go Muk!"

Looker complains "I just cleaned that!"

I stop running and press myself against the corner, ready a psychic blast and wait for the perfect moment to strike.

A dark blur comes sprinting around the corner and moves about five metres down the hallway before stopping in confusion. The two rocket grunts and a purple slime creature follow shortly afterwards. They stop right next to me and I just have to make one small sidestep to line up the two pokemon and fire the psychic energy.

The energy slams into the Muk, sending it flying backwards so fast a large portion of it sprays off and forms a cloud of toxic vapors. The rest of it hurtles into the back of the Weavile who in turn is slammed face first into the wall, and imbedded about 20cm into it.

The Muk immediately faints, slumping into a puddle. The Weavile manages to stay concious, if barely until it slips on the Muk and crashes to the ground where the poison drains the last of its energy and it too faints.

The two grunts both black out at seeing both their pokemon absolutely wrecked in one hit.

Looker walks over, picks up their pokeballs and retrieves both fainted pokemon before placing the pokeballs back in their owners hands. "Can you stuff these two idiots into the closet, I've got a plan."

Once the pair are inside the closet, Looker empties a few bottles of alcohol onto the pair and puts a half emptied bottle in each hand.

Lookr comments "That'll keep them occupied for a while. Now, lets get out of here before somebody notices."

We manage to get past the sleeping quarters without futher incident. Once we feel that they are safely behind us, we break out into a run for the exit.

We round the final corner and spot the big metal doors that lead outside when the alarm goes off, red lights start flashing and blast shields start lowering from the cieling. Looker and I sprint for the door and barely make it before the final blast shield slams down behind us, leaving us trapped against the final locked door. The main door is made from solid steel and absolutely freezing to the touch. A faint howling can be heard from the other side.

A quick mental scan reveals nobody else in the area, except for an oddly slippery mind.

Looker pulls out a fake rocket ID and scans it. The door slowly slides open, letting a blast of cold air and snowflakes in. As the door opens futher I spot an immaculately dressed man with a large feline rubbing at his leg.

well for me you start running around 8 at night then don't really update until 5 in the morning of the next day (which works well for me since I'm at work those hours) and usually drop around 8am or 9am which is when I fall asleep. Which is why I though you worked night shift since your writing schedule mimed my work schedule so well.

as for my thoughts. I do like how we can actually use strategy to plan around shit like dark types and I'm liking where the story is going. Can't wait to see how we handle the real world and how it handles us.
>>
>>935898
I'm glad that my times work for you. For me, I run from ~10pm to ~3am and try to post an update shortly after I get up. (Usually around 9-10am)

UTC+12 is one hell of a drug.
>>
>>935894
For me right now it's about 6 am. I can't really make you change your sleep schedule or anything, but I think I can adjust to the 10pm-3am thing for this.
>>
>>935911
I can try and start slightly earlier if you'd like. I do feel like my writing quality tends to drop towards the end of a run, so starting and finishing earlier might not necessarily be a bad thing.

I've been thinking about adding images to the main updates, but that would add about a 5 minute delay to each post. I could also write shorter more frequent updates, which is a thing I'll try experimenting with for the upcoming boss fight.
I just don't like giving trivial choices or updates with no voting options at the end.
>>
>>935920
well as for the pic thing you could just find a bunch you think would work in quest and save them before you start running.
>>
>>935920
If you want to get posts out faster, you might try splitting long posts in half and marking them as such. I can see why you might not like doing something like that, but it's worth trying. As for images, you might try finding images that fit the story in advance to running. That way you only half to find images when you don't half a pic that's appropriate.

As the door opens fully, Giovanni starts speaking, his voice heavy with menace. "I do hope you weren't thinking of leaving. After all, I'd just gone through all the trouble of getting the perfect present for you, Mewtwo. As for you detective, I must admit that I admire you resourcefulness. However I cannot help but pity you because of your crippling inability get over your past failures."

Looker says nothing.

Giovanni continues to taunt Looker. "Did I strike a nerve? It's okay though, as you can always rely on someone else to do your job for you, apparently."

Looker maintains a stoic facade, but I can feel the anger behind it.

I step forward and prepare for a fight.

Giovanni steps forward as well and yells "Destroy them, Nidoking!" as he tosses a pokeball.

A large purple beast erupts from the pokeball stomping and roaring. The whole display is a lot quieter than it should be, as if it's trying to bluff being stronger than it actually is. Giovanni seems way too confident for that to be the case though.

It's okay. I'm sure Giovanni's just trying to appeal to you by being honorable. The only reason that I can think of is nobody wants to have to try and deal with the collateral damage that a 6v6 clusterfuck would cause. That being said, saving the world should take precedence.

I'll call votes in 20min. In the meantime could somebody roll that 3rd dice?

Deciding that I don't have the luxury of playing fair, I use Psychic to lift the rest of Giovanni's pokeballs off his belt and toss them into a snowdrift. Looker shouts "Incoming!" as Nidoking launches a pulse of dark energy that races my way.

I lurch backwards in an attempt to mitigate the damage I take as the pulse slams into me and sends me staggering backwards, causing the world to dim for a second. A line of fiery pain along my arm snaps me back to full alertness as Persian makes its presence known with a hiss and swipe of shadowy claws.

Anongst all this, Giovanni makes a desperate grab for the pokeballs as they fly off, but fails to catch any of them.

The wind picks up, picking up the snow and ice off the ground and scouring anything foolish enough to be unprotected. I can feel my scrapes becoming numb as they slowly freeze over, as well as a stinging pain on my left side as the snow and ice whips into it.

Persian and Nidoking don't look like they are coping with it any better as they are also buffeted by the storm. Nidoking's form slowly dissolves, revealing a dark fox with a furious look in its eyes as its true form is revealed.

In the split-second before the fight is rejoined, I decide on my next move.

>Use a move. (1d100. Choose a move)
>Do something else (1d100, write -in e.g: focus on dodging.)

>Movepool: Laser focus, Psychic, Psyshock, Flamethrower, Thunderwave, Detect, Telekinesis, Charge beam, Sandstorm (Can be used to direct the forming blizzard slightly.)

The twinges of pain shooting through my body from Zoroarks last attack make my my choice for me. I need to disable it before I take too many more attacks like the last.

Giovanni's shout of "Zoroark, Night daze." is barely audible over the whistling of the wind.
I summon a wave of electricity and frantically shove it at the onrushing Zoroark. As it plows through the wave Zoroark is visibly slowed, but keeps coming anyway, throwing clouds of darkness everywhere that linger and hide Persian from my sight. As Zoroark rushes past, one of the clouds clips my arm, causing it to go numb as a chill somehow worse than the building storm spreads through it.

Persian attempts to strike from the shadows with another Shadow claw, but I hear it coming and manage to dive out of the way just in time. I almost lose track of it but I catch a glimpse of its tail sticking out above the screening darkness.

Zoroark begins slowly limping towards me, while I struggle to keep track of Persian's whereabouts. I fire a few blasts into the darkness , but the blasts are weaker than I'd hpoed and I doubt I even clipped the slippery cat.

Looker yells "Don't count Zoroark out yet. Its not nearly as badly off as it's trying to convey."
The vicious weather continues to chill my body and sap my speed.

>Flamethrower Zoroark to try and take it completely out, as well as warm myself up slightly.
>Control the swirling shards of ice with Sandstorm.
>Regain some health with Recover.
>Attempt to take Persian out with a good dose of Psychic.

Double duty, if the dice permit it.

Flamethrower

yeah, sure.

Next move should be recover, bait Persian to end it with a melee strike. Then we grab onto it so it can't run away and concentrate the icy weather onto it with Sandstorm.

If the chosen action calls for dice, then I'll use the first three dice, regardless of what vote they are attached to.
First dice is Mewtwo, second is Zoroark and 3rd is Persian.

Taking Lookers advice to heart, I turn around and aim a flamethrower at the limping Zoroark. Using a burst of speed it had been hiding, it rushes up to me and starts to launch a vicious sucker punch. Just before it hits me, Its leg siezes up and it is unable to move. One point-blank flamethrower later and it falls to the ground, unconcious and radiating a welcome heat.

Persian attempts another shadow claw and misses again, before dashing back into the rapidly shrinking cloud of darkness, but I notice that the shadows roiling off Persians claws have got denser each time Persian repeats the move. However Persian seems to either be unable or unwilling to change tactics.

With the snow turning into hail and showing every sign of getting worse, I unfortunately don't have the luxury of just waiting for the darkness to disperse and striking at the exposed cat, so I'll either have to leave myself vulnerable whilst I recover, or I could use a move that covers a large area in order to flush it out.

I realise that Giovanni has been remarkably quiet for a while.

>Use Detect to dodge the first attack, then use recover and wait it out.
>Use Sandstorm to take control of the storm.
>See where Giovanni has gone.

Wary of how much those claws will hurt, I reach out with my mind and skim Persians surface thoughts. It's terrified of going against Giovanni's last orders. It dives at me again, but I glide gracefully out the way, so it crashes into an icy patch of ground and keeps sliding.

While Persian is busy, I attempt to copy what I saw Reuniclus do this morning and heal my injuries.

Persian sees what I'm doing and attempts to charge me, however Its claws cant grip on the frozen ground and it falls over. Walking over to it, I start condensing the ice in the air. Crystals of ice form in the air around me and start spinning. As it tries to run away, I grab persian by the tail and pull it back. Persian crashes into my forming shell of ice taking considerable damage as it does so. I hold the Ice storm over it and it faints after only 40 seconds of being pelted and shaken.

I look around for Giovanni and find him facedown in a snowdrift next to his pokeballs with his hands tied behind his back and Looker standing over him.

A whirring sound soon can be heard over the roar of the wind. When it draws closer, A voice speaks into a megaphone and says "Unknown person, This is Anabel of the international police. Please step away from the criminal. "

>Sorry to those who just got here as I'm falling asleep at the keyboard here, so I'm going to have to pause the thread again for ~10 hours. Next time, I'll probably go back to the longer updates as I find them easier to write, unless people really like the shorter ones.
