Shinobi Quest #54

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Last thread, Tsuki Norihime interacted with many of her friends and allies, as Konoha’s recovery began. After spending time with Fuu, you took Hinata with you to cheer up Itachi-sensei, discovering your potential ANBU candidacy in the process. Later, you spent time with Danzo, who reunited you with a friend thought lost, along with some important keepsakes. You spoke at length about the revival of ROOT, and the old shinobi requested that you take a direct role in it’s future.

Busy days lie ahead…..

The next morning comes swiftly, as if to deny you of any respite. Danzo did not pressure you into making any commitments yet, but you know that a choice will need to be made eventually.

For now, you’ve chosen not to stress yourself. Your recovery has just begun, after all- neither ANBU nor ROOT will benefit from a one-armed shinobi.

--------------

After breakfast, Hinata escorts you to the hospital, where the ever-busy medical-nin provide you with medicine, along with beginning another tedious session of healing. Due to a variety of factors (Kushina’s requirement for near-round the clock care, coupled with losses from the attack, you suspect) your sessions are rather gradual, the doctors taking time to carefully regrow your arm’s skeletal structure.

The process isn’t exactly…. comfortable, although the medicine certainly helps dull the pain. Thankfully, Hinata is always nearby to distract you with idle conversation.

“What do you have planned today, Tsuki-hime?” She asks politely.
You think for a moment. Nothing is overly pressing, but….

1. You have a meeting with a clan leader to facilitate.

2. You plan on spending some time training.

3. You need to spend some time in meditation, away from the world. (After all, you don’t know how patient either the Four or Kaguya will be with their requests of you.)

4. You plan to take it easy. That’s what you need to recover, after all!

Since our arm is busted anyways, training won't be s effective as it could be. We need to take it easy for it physically to let it heal and all. But doing something mentally should be still useful.
We got a quest from Kaguya, and a meeting with the 4 arrogant assholes.

“Apparently the Clan Head of the Aburame has requested a visit from me- Danzo mentioned it yesterday.” You admit.

“Oh? Shino’s grandmother, right? I can’t say I know much about her… what does she want?” Hinata asks.

“She-”

“Oh Tsuki, you don’t think it’s a betrothal offer, do you? Father’s been worried about it ever since you first showed off your abilities….” Hinata muses, blushing faintly.

What.

You try to mask your reaction… with middling results.

“Hinata, surely you’re joking? Konoha is barely a week out of the crucible- Would somebody truly be so uncouth?” You respond.

“If they’re looking to get ahead of the competition, I wouldn’t completely disregard the idea… the clans are merciless about these sort of political dealings, after all. Father’s been deflecting marriages offers since I was small- and your unique abilities coupled with your family’s wealth…. If everything wasn’t in flux right now, those with the most to gain probably would’ve already made their offers.” She explains.

Marriage, huh? Danzo had mentioned the possibility as well, once- surely that’s not what the Aburame would demand in exchange for their loyalty, right?

…..right?

You…

1. Reject the idea of political marriage outright. Father married for love, and so will you- if you decide to at all.

2. Don’t necessarily hate the idea of political marriage- but it’s not really something you want to think about. Besides, you’re too young.

3. Welcome the idea. Let these needy shinobi clans compete and struggle for a place at your feet! Ohohohohoho!~

“I’ll address it if it happens- but I’m certainly not going to make such a commitment right now. There are plenty of other ways to build alliances without resorting to marriage, anyway.” You say with a sigh.

Hinata laughs- and you can’t but smile.

------------

The meeting with Kogoto Aburame isn’t hard to arrange- simply speaking to one of the clansmen working in the ROOT Facility is enough.

“Kogoto-sama will be very pleased that you’ve responded to her offer so soon.” The man says, bowing.

“Expect her response soon. She usually receives visitors in the evening- we will fetch you when the time comes.”

You thought the man would leave in order to deliver his news, but instead he simply releases a small beetle, which quickly makes it’s way out of the facility.

The Aburame certainly are resourceful, but you are still more than a little grossed out by all the bugs. For a brief moment, you remember the feeling of Shino’s chakra bugs on your exposed skin- and shudder.

You resist the urge to buy insect repellent before the meeting, a mighty feat indeed.

Bleh.

------------

Looking at your limited wardrobe, you sigh. A meeting of import demands a conscious choice of attire- and the outfit you wore to the exams was unsalvageable.

Maru thankfully had spare outfits for you, but your current selection is a shadow of it's former self, making the choice somewhat more difficult for you.

Finally, you….

1. Decide on something traditional.

2. Decide on something flashy.

3. Decide on something plain.

4. Give up and wear your uniform instead.

I don't know, why would a dangerous and highly competent schemer test a candidate in a way they would have to seriously address? I doubt she would try to kill us, but poisoning us with something mild to test our response isn't so unlikely.

Better safe than sorry, anyways.
>>

>>
>>914404
If this was something hardcore like an ANBU entrance exam or the like, I'd believe it. But why a formal meeting with a old clan head? It's not like Tsuki is being tested here for her ninja competence.

Indeed, I'd imagine it's a test of our intentions, willingly to do what is necessary, and an understanding of our character to determine whether or not she should truly back this new ROOT we wanted to restart. After all, would you want to put your clan's political and physical future at risk so easily without proper consideration?

It’s not really your style, but wearing something traditional is probably a good idea.

On your last birthday, one of your gifts had been a purple kimono with blue butterfly accents that, according to Maru, made you look more mature- although you’re pretty sure she was teasing you. Regardless, it’s a nice formal outfit, and it brings out the color of your eyes.

You summon a Hyuga serving girl to help you dress, before admiring yourself in the mirror.

It certainly fits you better than it did a year ago- this may just have been the right choice after all.

Rummaging through your tools, you produce your trusty custom war fan. It’s been awhile since you’ve used it for anything… but it was designed for situations like this- and a true shinobi never goes into a situation under-prepared. You tuck a few other tools- smoke bombs, wire and the like- into your outfit, but avoid anything overtly usable as a weapon.

Wouldn’t want to give the wrong impression, after all.

After readying yourself, you set out to leave the compound and head towards the Aburame district of Konoha, one of the few areas that escaped with little damage.

You…

1. Request a Hyuga escort.

2. Go alone.
>>
>>914499
>2. Go alone.
>>
>>914499
requiest a hyuga
>>
>>914468
If they do something like that, the answer is simple. Refuse to do anything about the poison. Let them sort out the antidote.

Otherwise it'll end up as they killed the heir to the Norihime clan when she went there for negotiations.

In the wake of the Konoha crush, the entire clan would face censure and the head executed.

>>914499
1. Request a Hyuga escort.

Why not. For this sort of meeting, one expects attendants or bodyguards. And this isn't a hush hush meeting.

>>
>>914499

I'm inclined to keep this under wraps, so far as possible.
>>
>>914499
Hm, would having an escort make us seem more cultured and sophisticated, or would it make us seem reliant on others?

>2. Go alone
I just realized that any Hyuuga would report everything they saw to their clan, so it's probably better to go alone, just in case.
>>
>>914499
>2. Go alone.
>>
>>914519
I do not expect the escort to sit in the meeting as well, more likely, this will merely be an escort to their compound.
>>
>>914547
We can take care of ourself for the most part, and the less people who know were having meetings with clan heads the better
>>
>>914499
>2. Go alone.

>>
>>914499
1. Escort
Builds relations with the clan as well.
>>
>>914499
>2. Go alone.
We need to think about what message we send here.
Taking a Hyuuga along is a clear defensive gesture. It implies we don't trust their hospitality, and that we arent secure in our own political capability. Reliant on the benefits of borrowed strength.
On the other hand, it also shows we have the clout to GET some backup, and that we're rightly cautious when facing capable opposition with unknown intent.
There are benefits and drawbacks either way.
>>
My thought process is, the Hyuga still respond to their elder, they will likely watch in with their eyes to gather information. Don't let that happen. It's not like they are against us, but they Ai t for us.

Hinatas dad will be posturing
>>
>>914557
Why the heck not. With our father out of konoha, we are the representative and heir to the norihime. That high level talks are taking place should not be out of place, consider the state oh upheval konoha is in.

Instead consider this. We are in the Hyuuga compound and Tsuki Norihime walks out without an escort properly dressed in traditional outfit, a large departure from her usual dress, heading somewhere unknown.

Bringing along an escort is a show of good faith to our Hyuuga hosts that we're not scheming anything behind their backs.
>>
>>914582
We're also Danzo's ward so people are going to be suspicious about us politicing, and the Hyuuga's might suspect something if we go out alone but thats better then them knowing who we're talking to
>>
>>914499
>2. Go alone.

>>914592
We just told Hinata who we're meeting with while being tended by a medical nin.

>>

This isn't going to be a courtesy call, we'll be discussing serious shit, and I guarantee anybody they send with us would have orders to learn as much about what we're doing as possible.
>>
>>914633
I would imagine a hyuuga initiating byakugan in the vicinity of a closed door meeting would a major breech of diplomatic protocol. These type of talks would definitely also be warded and the escort watched closely to make sure it doesn't occur without being known.

In any case, it is done.

>>
>>914711
Yea, I feel pretty committed at this point.
>>
>>914711
Pretty much everyone agrees that we're going ROOT, the question is how we're going to do it.

>Refuse ANBU and do ROOT operations underground
>Reinstate ROOT through Danzo as Hokage/political pressure on non-Danzo Hokage
>Accept ANBU and act as mole for ROOT (note that Danzo thinks this is a Bad Idea)
>>
>>914711
I'm still of the opinion that with such a flashy kekkei genkai, Tsuki is thoroughly ill-suited to being a covert operative in the field. As an organizer and a shot-caller, sure, but not where our involvement can be so easily and directly proven.
>>
>>914757
We just have to use skills that can't be tracked back easily. Lightning and Fire jutsus should be fine and we could probably get away with using a sword.
>>
>>914711
ANBU would seem to be a better choice since Tsuki is too "unique".
>>
>>914757
In the field, whether it be ROOT or ANBU(pfft!), we'd still need to restrict the usage of her Stellar release either way if we want to stay anonymous and unknown. So better to just utilize normal fire and lightning jutsus only, and no on using the signature weapons such as the Raiga blades at all. Rather, I think we should develop another unique weapon with help from Norihime technology for our ROOT persona.
>>
>>914753

I would support reinstating ROOT as part of ANBU.

The goal really should be creating a proper sustainable organisation ready to do everything to defend konoha and her interest and not just those of a specific individual or merely for ROOT itself. The old organisation of ROOT relied too much on power of charisma. A skilled operator could infiltrate and abuse those powers.
>>
>>914763
Our swordsmanship is pretty milquetoast though, and we're unlikely to be doing shit with it without the extremely-recognizable Kiba.

Investing in technology would be a better choice because Tsuki's public MO doesn't rely on technology and it would shore up our ability to fight without chakra.
>>
>>914763
>>914767
So in other words we should avoid using or strongest, signature abilities.

This is what I mean. We would only ever be partly effective in the field if we need to maintain secrecy, while if we continued to go on regular missions while orchestrating ROOT behind the scenes we would be more effective.
>>
>>914780
But who would be able to get all that cutting edge tech? Everyone would assume they were connected to us
>>
The only acceptable use of Stellar for us and remaining covert is afterglow is dad makes us a light insulatinging plug suit and maybe an assassination move where we just flood someone with chakra causing them to turn to ash, not even leaving a body.

Just picture it palm into someone's chest and the explode into ash, war of the world's style.

So we should become Ninja Batman?
>>
>>914783
True, we'd have to go to some trouble to keep it from obviously being Norihime in origin.

Actually, this might work if we develop our own technology instead of relying on Yoru's because it wouldn't be Yoru's product, it would literally be our own, and nobody would be able to trace its origins to Norihimecorp.
>>
High tech and unique weapons will only make it easier to trace it back to Tsuki.
>>
I think for now Tsuki can be essentially reverse ANBU, an ordinary jonin who takes missions for the Hokage just like everyone else, but who secretly receives OTHER orders and missions to be carried out parallel. We take missions as excuses or opportunities to get out fo the village or gain access to information and then either covertly do ROOT stuff on the side, or go completely off the grid by taking fake missions, switching places with doubles, or attending to personal business.

>>914789
>Tsuki in a plug suit
I like the way you think. Don't forget we can TOTALLY build an EVangelion too.
>>
>>914800
Still high tech is something thats rare as shit and only our company would be able to make it realistically

You briefly consider asking Hiashi for an escort, but quickly decide against it. If Danzo is to believed, you will be watched from the moment you arrive- and when negotiating with a secretive clan like the Aburame, it is likely unwise to bring people capable of seeing through walls.

As the sun begins to set, you leave the Compound. The guards are quite used to your coming and going by now, so they say nothing.

Wanting to avoid the public eye, you travel along the rooftops towards the Aburame district, watchful for anything out of the ordinary. Not that you’re overly concerned about it, but….

It wouldn’t hurt to be cautious.

You reach the Aburame district by nightfall, and are quickly thankful for deciding to avoid the roads- this area of Konoha, while normally pretty dense populated, has overflowed with civilians and other shinobi taking shelter after the attack. As a result it looks more like a slum than the district of one of the four noble clans.

Why had they all concentrated here? In all likelihood, Hiashi had refused them, and many people were suspicious of the Uchiha in the aftermath of the attack. No doubt the Aburame weren’t too pleased by this, but they aren’t exactly judgmental- in fact, by all accounts, the Aburame are quite charitable.

This could just be a front, though- charity and inclusion to mask a dark secretive underbelly…

Filled with bugs.

Ugh.

-----------------

You hop down from the roof of a nearby building as you approaching the compound, as to maintain appearances. Straightening your outfit, you turn the corner and face the Aburame compound.

--and nearly run right into Shino.

“Ah! Shino- I-” You stammer, startled.

“Evening, Tsuki. Grandma Kogoto is expecting you.” He says calmly.

You…

So don't make it look cutting edge. Make the tool either completely normal and plain looking, or disguise it with ornamental decorations to hide it's means of function. Basically, ultra dull or super flashy. I for one wonder if we can get a High-Frequency Blade when we charge it with lightning chakra.

>>914781
I don't mind being limited to using less options. In the end, Stellar jutsus cost so much that we normally can't use it often anyways. Thus, while the other elemental jutsus are less powerful, we can use them more often.

Also, being in ROOT over normal missions is not able being able to use maximum power, it's about the kind of mission we would be able to do. For example, using flashy powers to protect a client could be far less useful for Konoha's future safety than being able to steathily track and follow a dangerous individual or group on an Intel-gathering mission. Power isn't the answer to everything, and is certainly not the most needed factor for every kind of mission.

Our company? Or an inventor who invested a bunch of her own time into making stuff that clearly doesn't remotely resemble any Norihime product or design?

Not to mention that >>914823 brings up an excellent point as well. In fact, playing the tools off as a function of chakra instead of technology would likely throw off any remaining assumptions about its origins.

>>914820
>1. Try to remain composed
We likely don't have nearly enough Social Link with Shino for him to divulge anything about his clan head.
>>
>>914848
How many other inventors are even close to the Norihime level?
>>
>>914823
You're right, power isn't everything. But you're still advocating that we put Tsuki in a situation where her powerful, unique abilities get shelved on a regular basis instead of using them to their full effect. In essence you want us to take on missions with one arm tied behind our back, missions that other ninja could complete using more conventional and less easily traced means.

We don't HAVE to do everything ourselves.
>>
Let's take it easy.

Writing.
>>
>>914851
Seeing the shit that Sasori came up with alone, it's not at all improbable that similarly talented tech ninjas exist out there.
>>
>>914858
And Sasori himself was considered near-peerless in his field. You're comparing two master craftsmen when by all indications almost everyone else is basically banging rocks together.
>>
>>914863
By similarly-talented, I meant ninja whose tech skills are good enough to operate at Jounin/ANBU levels.

The point in all this is that technological skill alone is not inherently a red flag pointing to the Norihime corporation. If we take the time to keep the effects subdued or make them appear to operate off chakra instead of technology, then the trail is muddied further, and nobody could reasonably assume it to be connected to the Norihime's with that alone.
>>
>>914879
And what I mean is that anything even remotely approaching Norihime levels of ingenuity and technical advancement is rare enough in the setting to draw unwanted attention.

It's the same reason Batman always made me groan a little, because who actually would believe some guy made something as nuts as the Batmobile in his garage... you know, as opposed to implicating the massive corporation with nearly unlimited funding and technical expertise?

You cough.

“Evening, Shino. I’m eager to meet her- I’ve heard many good things.” you say, trying to regain your composure.

Shino looks you dead in the face. With his dark glasses and high collar, it’s almost impossible to make out any expression-

Then he starts to laugh. It’s a deep and guffawing laugh- and he’s laughing so hard that his eyes are beginning to tear up

“....Shino? I don’t-”

“Haaaa…… You’ll have to excuse me, Tsuki-chan…. I seem to have forgotten myself. Please, follow me.” He says, his composure immediately returning.

Shino leads you down the dimly lit alleyway, before turning toward the high walls of the Aburame compound.

He stands in front of the door, taking no action. Despite this, the doors open by unseen hands; Shino walks forward casually, before beckoning you inside.

“Hurry, Tsuki-chan; the doors will shut if I move too far from them. There pheromones of my beetles are attuned to those working the gate.” He explains.

Bugs… working the gate? It’s all a bit beyond you, although honestly you’d prefer not to know.

You hurry inside, and Shino continues to be your guide.

He leads you inside the main hall, which looks surprisingly normal. The interior is decorated with fine, if somewhat average furniture, along with photos of several of the Aburame clansfolk.

“Please, take a seat. I’ll announce your arrival.” Shino says, all trace of previous humor gone.

You oblige him, and sit in a nearby chair. Shino slides open a nearby door, and closes it behind him, disappearing from view.

Anons are likely overstating the technological ineptitude of the setting. Even without Yoru's genius, things like televisions, plastics, radios, etc all exist within Naruto.

In the sequel they have handheld gaming console's and super-high tech computers, even.

Tech moves fast in the anime world.

But to answer your question, Yojimbo and his samurai friends had some Norihime weaponry.

After several minutes, Shino reappears.

“She’s ready to see you now, Tsuki-chan. I’ll lead the way.” He says, beckoning to the door behind him.

“Of course. Thank you, Shino.” You respond, trying to be as polite as possible.

He leads you through several passageways, eventually reaching a staircase that leads downward.

“A great deal of our compound is underground- not unlike a hive. It connects our buildings in ways that normal construction would not allow.” Shino explains, walking down the staircase at a casual pace.

When you reach the bottom, he stops you, and takes out a stick of incense.

“Before we continue, I need you to hold this.” He says, handing you the stick.

“Burn the tip with some of your chakra. A little should be plenty. The scent of this incense, infused with your chakra, will normalize them to your scent and your foreign chakra.” Shino instructs.

“Them?” You inquire.

“From this point forward, insects of many varieties next within the walls and ceilings of our home. Many roam freely. They have been trained to attack outsiders or unfamiliar chakra signatures, but this incense will acclimatize them to you. You’ll be perfectly safe, Tsuki-chan.” He finishes, noticing your slight fidgeting.

“Perfectly safe…. Right….” you grumble, lighting the end of the incense stick.

With that done, Shino leads you onward, through several more corridors and down two more sets of stairs. Finally, you reach a long hallway, where a lonely door sits at the far end.

“Grandma Kogoto is waiting for you in there. I’ll be here to guide you back when your business has concluded.” He says.

“Thanks again, Shino.” You respond.

His dark glasses again hide any sort of emotion from the shinobi.

“Not a problem, Tsuki-chan.”

You walk towards the door, slowly.

The hallways stretches farther than it seems, and at your pace it takes your farther than it should to reach the doorway.

All at once, you’ve reached it- and cautiously, you reach forward to the doorknob.

You gently turn the knob and push, and the door acquiesces.

Inside, an elderly woman sits alone at a table, packing tobacco into a long, slender pipe.

The room itself is brightly lit and plainly adorned, with-

“Well, come in, girl. I don’t have all evening for you to admire my home.” Kogoto Aburame criticizes, interrupting your observation.

The woman’s voice is low and sultry, seemingly undamaged despite her habit.

Not wanting to subjected to further criticism, you step forward, closing the door behind you.

You introduce yourself, but the woman seems uninterested, instead lighting her pipe, eventually taking a long drag.

Her eyes narrow in on you, and she exhales a thin stream of smoke in your direction.

“I know who you are. Sit.” She says sharply.

You obey, pulling out the chair.

Sitting down, you find yourself face to face with the head of the Aburame clan.

A faint, knowing smile spreads across her lips.

“Shall we begin?”

Since his parents were not dead at our starting point, he would have no reason to create it.

One of my biggest labors has been trying to introduce relevant movie characters and situations, including the spaceflea from nowhere end to the series, early enough that they don't feel alien.

Which thread was this? I can't remember. What 100?
>>
>>918590
During the late part of the crush (somewhere around figuring out what to do with Kyuubi) Wargle rolled one of those dice for unspecified events elsewhere, and hit a 100. Cue the thread losing its shit and speculating about what it meant.
>>
>>918605
Hopefully it means Nori's dad isn't dead. I mean he might be and it'd be good for ROOT if he was but I still don't want her to lose her father and her mother.

Maybe it was Garra managing to get away.
>>
>>918608
>Hopefully it means Nori's dad isn't dead.
I'm not sure if you read the previous thread at all, since Wargle already said her dad went to the Capital the day after the Crush.
>>
>>918612
Nori's father is the Fourth.

You're thinking of Yoru, Tsuki's father and head of the Norihime.
>>
>>918612
Where was that?

I went through this thread and the past two.

I cntl + f'd Hokage/Capital/Minato.

I didn't see shit. So... I don't know what you're talking about.
>>
>>918620
#53, second post by wargle, search for "capital"
>>
>>918656
Yeah. None of that is about Minato.

"So, the Fourth is still-”

“Missing, yes. None of his guards have received any contact from him, and neither had Jiraiya. I suspect that part of his eagerness to set out in search of Tsunade was, in part, a hope to find Minato as well.” Danzo explains."

He's wrong.
>>
>>918665
To clarify, Yoru (Tsuki's father, head of Norihimecorp) is fine, and went to the capital for supplies and workers for the reconstruction effort. This is who the anon was confusing with Nori's father.

Minato, the Fourth (and Nori's father), vanished during the crush along with the Akatsuki member he was fighting, and has yet to be seen since.
>>
>>918668
Exactly. I said that I hope Nori's dad is alive.

He was an uppty prick and said that I haven't read the previous thread.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and searched for it.

I think he's confusing Nori with Norihime.

Should this quest get a discord? I've seen others use them for planning.

I'm strongly urging you guys to tell dad and Danzo about Kaguya and the bunnies. Lies are like a virus and an omission of fact is still a lie. Pic related found that out the hard way.
>>
>>918736
If we do join ROOT it will probably be important to tell them but if we don't have proof we just look insane
>>
>>918676
That just leads to circlejerking.

I was once prescribed an antidepressant called Venlafaxine and it caused me to have fucked up audio hallucinations. I thought I was developing schizophrenia and told my doctor, but he immediately told me to stop taking the drug and I stopped hallucinating. Telling caregivers about shit like this is what responsible, intelligent people do, and I think Tsuki would do it. I sincerely hope nothing like this ever happens to you because you apparently don't have the wherewithal to ask for help.
>>
>>918742
This is a world of bullshit ninja magic. Danzo probably noticed something during the fight with Gaara when we were bailed out.
>>
>>918676
And what of the anons that don't use the discord? Suddenly you have this divide where discord anons start shelling out plans and other anons are just confused.

Keep plans in the thread so everyone can see and contribute.
>>
>>918676
I'm not really fond of discord for quests, I've only ever seen it encourage factionalism between the people who use it and the regular anons in the thread.

And excessive factionalism is the cancer that can actually ruin quests when one side inevitably wins out over the other on a major choice.

He was a good qm, and he will be missed.

I will forever hold close to my heart the memory of forcing Sasori and Deidara to go through our bullshit deathtrap of a house.
