--------------------------------------------------------------------

You fell asleep in your flight suit again.

If you're quite honest, you never really made a habit out of getting out of your flight suit after flights with the fleet. You would often return from your flights tried and drained from the nearly 12 hour long flights. You would often just drop into a bunk, regardless of if it was either yours or occupied. It earned you one or two slaps from the bare minimum of the female pilots amongst the carriers air-crew.

After leaving the fleet and being re-assigned to a training squadron, you ended up returning to the cycle that almost every pilot followed. And said trend continued through your re-assignment to VF-21. However, when the war began it fell to the wayside. And this was just compounded by Svetlana's arrival.

You feel like shit, you imagine that you look like shit too. Your head pounded like the thunderclap of falling bombs, you forced your eyes open groggily as your senses returned you you slowly.

That... that ceiling doesn't look like the one in your barracks. You don't remember your hut having a ceiling fan, or single beds, or such wide windows. Hell, the only thing that even feels remotly similar to the old hut is the beds and the weight of someone cuddling up to you underneath the covers. Unfortunatly, you both still had your clothes on, so you hadn't scored.

Damn...

You calmly and groggily rolled your head over to face towards the other occupant of the bed, silently praying that you weren't in bed with someone important. You didn't want that to happen as second time.

In fairness it's not your fault that you ended up in bed with the Soviet ambassador's daughter. She should have been in Washington anyways.

When you looked over at your current company, you could only really make out that the woman was blonde, but your eyes were so blurry that you couldn't really make out much more without rubbing the sleep out of your eyes.

Upon a second look, you realised that you were sharing a bed with one half of the British contribution to the unit. Specifically, it was Slider. She lay deep in sleep with her head nestled against your chest, wearing a [] over her flight suit.

As you let your head fall back against the pillow again, you tried to remember just what had happened last night.

Flight. Bombing Mission. Svetlana. Re-basing. Transfer Papers. Whisky.

Slowly, the rest of the information filtered back into your alcohol-addled mind. It took a few seconds for your brain to connect the dots, but you finally managed it.

Everything had started with your last mission, the bombing of some airbase in the ass-end of Korea. After the mission however, you and the rest of your unit returned to base. As soon as you landed however, you were told to pack your bags as you were being rebased closer to Tokyo on the request of the Japanese Royal Family. While you didn't know the reason to begin with, you were briefed as soon as you arrived at Yokota airbase that VF-21 and Shirotori flits were being twinned, both units would fly together, but would not actually be merged into a single flight. After being given your new assignment, you and Svetlana were taken to aside by Dredd. He needed you and her to sign some paperwork.

Said paperwork being for Svetlana's American citizenship and her official transfer to VF-21. Suffice to say that she was over the moon with the news. And in celebration, everyone had decided to party. This had inevitably ended with you, and many other members of your unit getting smashed.

As you looked around the room, you noticed that propped up against the door was a long, thin box with a note set on top.

>Get up and investigate the box.
>Get up and head out, you still have some calls to make.

As soon as you noticed the box by the door, your interest was instantly piqued. The box was roughly around 15 inches long, was made of wood and was surprisingly well built. Additionally, there was a not positioned on top of the box.

You carefully extracted yourself from Slider's grasp, you carefully grabbed the pillow and used it to fill the void made by your departure. It took you a bit longer than you would have liked, but you were in no hurry.

As soon as you were off the bed, you made your way towards the entrance, and where the box waited. A few ideas came to you about who or where it could have come from, and most of those places started with a certain ex back in the US. You carefully pocketed the note, and then opened up the box.

Now, you hadn't been expecting much. If anything, you were expecting a bottle of some expensive, flowery liquor. Probably from your ex. Or maybe it could have been a bottle of whisky from your family back home. You weren't expecting a sword.

Well, in fairness, you didn't think it was a sword. You had a feeling that swords were meant to be longer, your officer's sabre was longer. If anything, this was the kind of knife that you would expect a street thug with an Asian fetish to hold you up with. However, this weapon was not that crude. You might not be a sword-guy, but you can tell craftsmanship when you see it.

The blade came with a scabbard of it's own, embossed with the Chrysanthemum Seal of the Imperial Japanese Royal Family. It also came with a length of belt with buckles on it. You could see that the belt was too long to wrap around your waist, but it seemed long enough to wrap around your leg.

>Read the note, maybe it has some more info on why you now own a dapper knife?
>Leave the knife behind and head out, maybe your squadmates are somewhere around here.
>Fuck it, you're too tired for this shit. Head back to bed.

While you certainly liked having a new knife, you still didn't know where the hell it came from. Though even though you were still hungover from last night's festivities, you could still connect enough dots to guess that the note that you had just pocketed contained at least some information. As such, you opened it up and began to read.

Razor

I figured that you would have preferred a short letter this early in the morning, considering how you and the rest of the unit were partying so much last night. As such, I'll get right to the point. Thanks to our new assignment to act as the babysitters to Sakamoto's flight, we now have to carry around blades wherever we go. I don't like it, but it's either those knives or full sized Katanas.

Either way, we now have to carry these around now. Thankfully I was able to haggle it down to just the knives, the original proposal was for us to carry those around along with either a Katana or an officer sword. You should probably carry around your pistol though, a knife isn't a good defence.

Anyways, I've included the picture-guide on how to wear the knife when you're going around on base. I hope that you actually pay attention to it, I'd hate to lecture you on not following to some bullshit culture rule.

Either way, if you need anything then you can come see me in the attached offices, but as you and Svetlana are chumming it up pretty well together, I'm assigning you as her observer and minder. If there is anything pending for either you or Svetlana, or from Grumman, then I'll send a runner for you.

Anyways, when you next have a chance. Get over to my hut so I can give you a rundown.

- Dredd

Well, that was informative. Though you really didn't do much problem with carrying around a knife, especially as you usually carry around heavier firepower.

Well, with Dredd saying that he would send a runner to find you if anything important came up. As such, you instead decided to hit up a payphone. But of course, you would have to change into something clean, and have a quick shower. As such, you instead checked out the room for your stuff and any signs of a bathroom.

Unfortunately, there wasn't a bathroom in your room. But you did manage to find your stuff in it's bag under your bed. A quick root around netted you a spare flight suit, a change of pants and socks. And your rather spartan wash bag. After that, it took you a few seconds to find you a minute to find the male bathrooms, which were very clearly labelled.

You could have taken a long, Hollywood shower. But ever since the fleet you've always been in the habit of taking short, navy showers. Only using enough water to get yourself damp and then then a quick blast to clear yourself off. However, it was also rather quick, so you ended up heading off to the payphones quicker than usual.

It took you a bit of time to rout around the base to find the payphones, first stopping off around the visitor centre, and then searching around the barracks for a while, before then finding out that there was a payphone on the block where your unit was accommodated.

You managed to wait to until you were out of sight before face-palming. You had overlooked that possibility.

Eventually, when you made your way back to the payphone, and you quickly thought up your options. You could PROBABLY call up your parents to see if they were in, and you could also call Ares too. Though you called them yesterday. You could also shoot a call off to Lauren, she was probably worried sick about you. And you remember how well that went down last time.

>Get up and call your parents, see if they are in.
>Get up and call Lauren, she's probably worried sick about you.
>Get up and call your old RIO, Ares.
>Call someone else (who?)

Your first port of call was to phone up Lauren, you hadn't talked to her ever since you had transferred out to Japan. She was probably worried sick about if you survived thus-far. And considering her track record, keeping her in the loop could avoid severe problems.

Problems of the stabby kind...

Either way, you quickly inserted the required money and punched in the phone number to the Mercer residence. Said number being one that you had committed to memory a while back.

You had been around Lauren's house... well, it wasn't really a house. It was a damn mansion, complete with maids and butlers and all that rich-person stuff. Either way, the phone rang twice before it was picked up.

"Hello, this is the Mercer Residence. How are you this evening?" A supple, feminine voice answered. One of the maids.

"I'm doing well, thank you. I am Bradley Poole, I'm here to speak with Lauren Mercer, is she in?" You replied, before then asking. The maid was quiet for a couple of seconds, likely checking a list of some kind.

"Ummm... Miss Mercer isn't currently... in..." The maid replied, her voice sounding far less confident. "Would you mind if I hand you over to the Head Maid? She gave us instructions to hand you over to her if you call."

>"Sure, how long would I have to wait?"

"I'm in a bit of a hurry... is there any way to speed this up?" You asked calmly as you leaned against the wall.

"I'm sorry Mr Poole. But unless you can give me a good reason, I must follow my orders. You'll have to wait until the Head Maid arrives." The maid replied tersely, pressing her point forward.

"Listen lass, I don't know if Miss Mercer, or any of the other maids told you, but I'm a fighter pilot. I'm currently based out in Japan and we've got reds of all shapes and sizes coming out of the damn woodworks over here. I'm about to go wheels up in 5, and the chances of me not coming back are rather high. And with such a high chance of death, I feel I have more than enough reason to find out what is going on." You argued across the trans-pacific line, giving the maid reason to pause.

"I... well, that is certainly a good reason..." The maid trailed off, however you could still hear muffled conversation from the other side of the line.

"Well unfortunately, the Head Maid is out right now... I suppose I can tell you, but it would be best to wait for the Head Maid to return so she may pass along the message as intended." The maid replied, sounding far less stern than before.

"I would like to know now, I'll call back for the message if I return from the flight." You replied calmly, preparing yourself for the worst.

"I see... unfortunately Miss Mercer is unavailable because she..." The maid paused for a couple of seconds, before then continuing on. Her report giving you something far worse than the worst cases you could imagine.

"...because Miss Mercer has decided to join the US Navy as a pilot... I believe her intent is to serve alongside you..."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's where we'll end it for this week's run! Yes, it's a short one, but hopefully with Where Wolves Fear to Tread roughly around 2/3rds of the way through it's arc, Pilot Quest should be returning soon. We'll also have a Christmas themed Pilot Quest run in the days running up to Christmas.

Either way, if you have any questions regarding either the setting or the characters, then ask and I'll try and answer them in a reasonable manner.

All I can hope for is that she's got such shit reflexes that they make her be a desk jockey or some shit, but knowing how wealthy she is, she can probably just bribe her way into the cockpit of an F14.

In fairness, she's not as crazy as you think. Extremely obsessed, sure. But it doesn't take any old idiot to become part of Grumman's design team...

Then again, there are things that you can do to keep her away from the unit. You just have to think about it.
