You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and you've spent the entire day so far dealing with the fallout of the reigai rebellion. There are such far-reaching implications to the whole series of events mostly due to what the reigai are and how they were made. There's no doubt in your mind that most Captains and Lieutenants wouldn't be comfortable unless their own copies were destroyed, and you can't say that you don't understand the feeling. Had you not dispatched your own reigai and instead been given the chance to spare or condemn her after the fact you're not sure what you would do.

That's why you're at the First Division barracks, to meet with Shunsui to discuss how to proceed now that the leader of the reigai rebellion has been killed.

Unfortunately it seems you're not the only one who has to speak with the Head Captain today. Unohana has beaten you to it, and you can feel it by focusing on her reiatsu as you draw closer.

“Do you know why Captain Unohana is here, Lieutenant?” you ask Nanao, having invited yourself into the reception hall. She glances up from whatever paperwork has been keeping her occupied, seemingly surprised both at your unannounced appearance and your awareness of Unohana's visit.

Nanao shakes her head quietly. “No, ma'am. And even if I had been told, this seems... personal.”

“Who called it?” you press, determined to find out something before allowing the subject to drop completely.

“I believe my Captain did, which makes this seem all the stranger,” Nanao explains carefully. “Normally he would tell me what a planned visit from a Captain was about, or at least allow me to sit in on the meeting. But I've rarely seen him look so grim as he did this morning.”

Shunsui looked 'grim'? That barely even computes. They must be discussing something that he doesn't really want to talk about, something personal or else offensive to him on a personal level. The problem becomes that you can't really narrow it down further from there without speculating, and unfortunately you have too little information to go on.

“Thank you, Lieutenant,” you nod slowly, meaning to move on. “Could you tell him I'm here? I'll wait if I have to, but this is important business about the reigai.”

“I'll certainly pass it along that you're here,” Nanao bows, “assuming he doesn't know already. No offense meant ma'am, but you Captains have an annoying habit of knowing far more than you let on.”

“Feel free to wait out in the garden, I'll send someone in a bit to see to your comfort.”

The leaves on some of the trees have just started to turn in the Seireitei: the seasons here have always begun earlier and ended later than anywhere in Japan, and the fall foliage is no different. Soon enough your Division's grounds will be filled with crimson and golden foliage, enjoyed both by your own subordinates and by visitors who come to see the large, open gardens with their groves of maple and ginkgo trees set amidst the now-dormant fruit trees and the evergreen cedars. In contrast, what few gardens the First Division's grounds actually has are much smaller and more secluded, tucked away into courtyards amid and sometimes atop the high towers that are common here. These are owned by individual officers and their families, and probably the largest of these belongs to the office of the Head Captain.

The white gravel here has been flattened at some point recently, probably in preparation for raking, so you don't feel particularly bad about walking out into it. At the center is a lone pine surrounded by an arrangement of three hard, dark stones of some sort of igneous material, dense and smooth despite their angular lines. All around the gently undulating margins of the gravel sea are more rocks of a similar material, and enough trees to shade the adjoining portico from the most intense hours of sun. Only a few are turning right now, the rest mostly being pine or cherry trees, whose branches are already beginning to shed their leaves. The smell of the trees and the moss growing between the stones gives the air a wonderful scent, meaning it would be a shame to put your time here to waste.

Shinrin-yoku: the 'new medicine' name for an activity that nobility in Japan have enjoyed for centuries but proposed in the 1980's as a form of stress-management. The essential oils and the clean air are good for the body, particularly when combined with a derivation of the old practice of kaihōgyō by which a monk was meant to walk 'with awareness'. Basically... it means a stroll through a forest, or else a garden with dense enough foliage to achieve the same effect. While you've never been one to stroll you do have a similar practice, one more suited for someone of such a martial bent.

Setting aside your zanpakuto, you begin your own sort of meditative exercise. It's similar to tai chi in its pace and fluidity, but instead focuses on movements and positions that are derived from typical hakuda training sets: specifically those that can be easily performed with a sword in hand. The wonderfully fresh air, the late-morning calm, and your own focus on the practice all work in concert to heighten your awareness of every small aspect of your routine... except for the passage of time.

You don't know how long you've been at it when you're interrupted by a familiar voice.

“Am I interrupting, Captain?” Okita bows respectfully from the portico.

“Not at all,” you insist quietly, continuing your routine with a wide, arcing roundhouse kick. “I assume your Lieutenant sent you here?”

“That's right. Though I'll admit, I volunteered when she asked.”

You pause for a moment, left fist extended in a low strike as if against an opponent's ribs. “She asked for volunteers? Why?”

“Well...” Okita's voice trails off as you turn to face him, and he gestures vaguely in your direction. Looking at yourself you can begin to see the reason for such a measure: even when at rest you tend to unconsciously restrict how much reiatsu your body releases, as many Captains do. But during the course of your exercises it seems you've been releasing much more reiatsu than usual, as you've been so relaxed that your unconscious control started to slip a little. The white spiritual energy has even begun to take a familiar shape behind your back...

You quickly suppress your reiatsu back to its normal 'resting' state, doing the First Division's officers the courtesy of continuing to hide how terrifying a Captain's power really is.

“Sorry about that!” you apologize awkwardly. “Normally when I do jinzen I can keep my reiatsu suppressed... I didn't realize that 'normal' meditation would have that sort of effect.”

“It's quite alright,” Okita bows again. “Wait... did you just say that this is suppressed for you?”

“Captains are kind of ridiculous,” you admit, holding your gaze on him. Even just that gesture can come off as intimidating when you do it, or so you've been told. “Even a Captain whose skills are kind of poor by comparison with their peers is in a whole different league in terms of raw power.”

“Well that's terrifying.”

“Most people would agree.”

Okita sets a wooden tray down at the edge of the portico, upon which are two cups of warm tea and a few yatsuhashi, a mix of matcha and anko flavored fillings. You take one of the treats and a cup, seating yourself on the edge of the walkway facing the garden. Okita does the same, sitting quietly a few feet to your side.

“A while ago you told me that you'd tell me about who I was in life,” he muses, gazing out at the trees. “Would you say that I was a good man?”

Might be going way off base with this, but what would be the consequences of telling him who he was?

Would knowing who he was in life overwrite the person he is now?

I haven't been through the archive in a while, but the last time they met did Riku give him the choice about knowing about his life?

If so, he seems to be taking up that offer, but he wants to know if past-him was someone he wants to be again, first.

It depends on the consequences I guess, but I guess:

>Tell him that it was complicated. He can sort out his own meaning from that.

but not in the dismissive "it's complicated", but telling him it was good and bad.

You ponder the question for a few moments, during which Okita seems to grow anxious. He certainly expects you at this point to tell him that he was a cold-hearted killer, or to offer some other form of criticism about who he was in a past life, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In reality, it's hard to even think of a way the average person could ever distinguish themselves as “good” or “evil” in his position, where he was honor-bound to carry out even the most despicable of acts and would have been rewarded for it... assuming he had been successful.

“You were loyal,” you tell him, avoiding any impression of a moral judgment. “You served Lord Kondō well as a captain of the Shinsengumi, until your death of illness less than a year before the Shogunate was abolished.”

“You avoided the question, Captain,” Okita observes. Sly as he ever was, you recall with a sigh.

“Having been born into a samurai family under Tokugawa rule largely stripped you of any right to make your own moralistic judgments,” you clarify for him, making the point behind your redirection more explicit. “Instead what you had were notions of honor and duty not unlike those valued by your former Captain. The question of whether it was good to kill your enemies never occurred to you in life, the same way that the goodness of purging hollows has probably never occurred to you in death. You did your duty, which for someone of your station in that era was the best you could aspire to.”

Okita remains silent for a while, doubtless unraveling your words and their meaning as he sips his tea. Comparing living humans to hollows might have been a difficult concept for most shinigami to grasp, as it's a matter of perspective that few are taught to consider. And eventually he does nod to himself, seeming to silently concede the point.

“So... if I might ask, how well did you know me?” he asks, changing the topic. “What was I like?”

“I knew you during my deployment at the height of the revolution,” you recount, “near the end of your life.”

“So when I was an old man, then?”

You shake your head and laugh. “No, you were twenty-one, and you blushed like a teenager whenever we sparred.”

At that mental image, Okita laughs as well despite the implication that he died young... which he did of course. He was only twenty-six when you last saw him alive. “So I wasn't good with women either?”

“Terrible,” you agree, “though funny enough most modern depictions paint you as a ladies' man... or else as a lady yourself.”

“For real?”

You nod. “Yup. Full-on pretty boy, I could hardly believe it myself... especially since the only photo of you from when you were alive isn't exactly flattering.”

>>
>>901815
“So you said I died of illness? Was I sick long?”

“You were. Tuberculosis by most accounts, and despite not knowing too much about medicine I'd agree with the diagnosis.”

Okita's eyes narrow at you as he realizes something. “You were with me when I died, weren't you? I remember something about a visitor... and a cat?”

“I'd heard through the Onmitsukidō I left in the field that you had taken ill,” you recall carefully, the memory being one you'd long set aside for more recent matters. “So I came to visit. You could see me in my spirit body by that point, so it was obvious you were moments from dying. The cat was actually a friend of mine.”

Okita cocks his eyebrow, but doesn't question the identity of your feline friend any further. “So I died without realizing that the war I fought in was lost?”

“You probably realized that it was all but over, just not how badly the Shogunate was going to lose. At that point it was still up in the air.”

“I see. So this is why you cautioned me over asking too much about my past?”

You nod quietly. “Exactly. It's never clear how a given person will handle memories of their past life.”

“You okay?”

After a moment, Okita sighs to himself and finishes his tea. “I guess. I always knew that I had a past, but to speak with someone who knew me even briefly is a lot to take in.”

You decide against pressing Okita on anything further, instead allowing him to slowly come to terms with his past and decide for himself how he would like to handle it in the long term: whether he wants to know more and embrace his past life, or do as you did and consider himself a distinct person from the Okita who once lived. It can't be an easy decision to make for any normal person, and when you consider it carefully you may have benefited from the fact that your past was isolated in a separate personality. It made it easier for you to distance yourself from that past, and the complications it carried.

Eventually Lieutenant Ise comes to gather you, and you stand. “I'll excuse myself for now, if you don't mind.”

“No, of course,” Okita agrees quietly. “And Captain? Thank you.”

“For what?”

“I can't prove it of course,” Okita admits, “but I suspect that you helped me pass on, and I get the feeling that it did some good. Because if I was the same way I am now when I was in my twenties, I couldn't possibly have taken my death... gracefully.”

You wince. “No, that's not what I'd call graceful.”

“Had I been left to my own devices I may have hollowfied,” he continues thoughtfully, “so again, thank you.”

“No problem. Just glad to hear it helped.”

Nanao frowns at you once you've left the garden, not quite having understood the last exchange. “Captain, do you know our Third Seat from somewhere?”

“It's a long story, from when you were very young,” you sigh. “Ask me again some time.”

Along the way you spy Unohana as she walks down the stairs from Shunsui's office, and for a moment you can't quite place what seems different about her... until you notice her hair. These days she's taken to braiding it down the front, in order to hide the scar she received from Kenpachi a long time ago. But now she's wearing her hair loose behind her, and unless it's lower than you remember it being the scar seems to be gone. She acknowledges you with a slight bow of her head as she means to pass you by, your own feet having faltered from the shock of seeing her so changed.

Her eyes though... not as soft as they once were, at least in your estimation. But definitely not the same as when she slips back into her 'old self', where the only thing her eyes betray is simple bloodlust. Instead it's somewhere in-between, but more genuine at the same time. As if both extremes were simply a disguise.

“Captain,” you nod in exchange, your greeting causing her to stop as well. “You changed your hair.”

“It's a lady's prerogative to change her mind with no explanation,” she replies calmly, though a gentle smile tugs at her cheeks. It's somehow reassuring to know that she hasn't gone full Kenpachi on you, at least not just yet.

“You know, Lady Kusajishi, it occurred to me that we've never practiced together,” she continues calmly, raising a few hairs on the back of your neck just with the suggestion. “I would like to remedy that oversight at some point, if you would be willing to have me.”

“Excuse me, Captains, but do you mean the healing arts?” Nanao asks cautiously. “I was unaware that you were versed in such techniques, Captain Kusajishi.”

“I mean kenjutsu, my dear Lieutenant,” Unohana corrects Nanao, eyes falling heavily on the young Lieutenant. “I think you will find that all Captains are well-versed in the subject, myself among them.”

“Above most even, if what I've heard is half the truth,” you smile in spite of yourself. “It would be a pleasure to learn from you, Captain Unohana.”

“Do not underestimate yourself, Captain Kusajishi,” Retsu replies, finally smiling herself. “You may not carry the title Kenpachi, but I expect great things from you all the same.”

“I hope not to disappoint.”

“I doubt that you will.”

With that, she leaves you and a deeply-confused Nanao to continue on to Shunsui's office where he greets you with a tired smile.

“Please, take a seat!” he insists. “Nanaooo~! Please bring us some tea!”

Nanao frowns slightly before deciding to humor her Captain.

IT'S HAPPENING.

You decide that whatever it is Shunsui said to Captain Unohana should be kept between them. If one or the other decides that they want you to know they'll tell you themselves... and you have to admit, whatever it was that did it you kinda like this new Retsu. So instead you focus on what brought you here in the first place.

“I take it you've already been told that I killed the reigai's leader,” you begin, taking a seat across from Shunsui who nods in acknowledgment.

“I got a report to that effect, yes,” he tells you. “But if you already suspected I knew you wouldn't bother to tell me, and you certainly wouldn't do it face to face.”

“You're absolutely right,” you admit. “I'm here because we need to make some decisions about what to do with reigai who surrender. I'd like to know where you stand.”

“In favor of destroying them,” Shunsui tells you rather sternly, at least stern by his standards. “Those're the standing orders, and copies of our Captains are an existential threat I can't overlook as the Head Captain.”

“And if I were to tell you there was a way to neutralize them as a threat without executing them?”

Shunsui cocks his lone visible eyebrow in curiosity. “Are you telling me you know of such a way?”

“I don't. But I know someone very clever who's looking for a way.”

“And do you believe that Captain Urahara will be successful?” Shunsui asks. “I must admit I constantly find myself proven wrong about the man.”

“He has that frustrating power,” you agree. “But in any event there is an ethical consideration here. These are intelligent and aware beings that were created under the Central 46's orders, and now we're talking about executing them for being exactly what the Central 46 required of them.”

“And we also deal with criminals harshly,” Shunsui observes calmly. “You know that better than most.”

“These isn't equipment malfunction we're talking about here, Shunsui!” you insist. “And you're right, I was an officer in the Onmitsukidō, and that's why both Yoruichi and I agree on this one: imprisonment or banishment is what all precedent says we should do!”

“The standing orders are quite clear, it's literally a law,” Shusnui reminds you. “There's no room for interpretation.”

“You were certainly willing to overlook the law when our zanpakuto freaked out,” you scowl, gesturing to his swords where they sit behind his desk. “You were pretty quick to welcome them back if memory serves.”

“That situation was different.”

“How?”

“Because they were forced to commit those actions,” Shusui replies sternly. “You know that already.”

“And the reigai were controlled too,” you insist, just as firmly. “So there's a law insisting that we destroy them? Well what if that law is wrong, Shunsui? I wasn't made a Captain so that I could blindly follow the path the Central 46 laid in front of me, you and I both knew the Old Man better than that.”

“Nor did he promote you to break every single rule the Central 46 ever made until you find one that crosses the line!”

“If there's a line to be drawn here it's me that's drawing it!” you retort angrily. “What's with you, Shunsui? You've got a conscience in under that mop of yours, I know it's there. Just fucking use it and you'll know I'm right!”

“I don't disagree with you,” Shunsui sighs, “really. But I have no choice in the matter anymore. I'm ordering you to dispose of the reigai in your custody, report back to me when you've done so. If you run into any more consider it a standing order.”

I think Urahara can make it look like they died, but actually are send into hiding to our secret place between worlds/realities/what ever that place is located.

Make the disposing look very to the point, something not flashy at all. Purely serious so that others get the idea that Riku did it against her will, but did it because she follows the rules and chain of command.

Guys not that I'm against the action, but if we tell Shunsui we're doing this and then go dump the regai out in the world, I expect Shunsui is going to get some egg on his face for it. After a few moments, you grumble your response. “Don't worry. I'll be sure to 'dispose' of them properly, Head Captain.”

“I'm glad you understand the situation,” he replies slowly with a subtle nod of his head. “Please remember that I don't like issuing orders like this, and that I too have things I'd hate to see come to harm. If you follow me.”

Of course, you can sympathize with his position. It's easy for the Central 46 to issue death warrants without ever having to look the victims of their bureaucracy in the eyes: as much as they've improved with this generation, they still begin their tenure by renouncing their ties to the outside world and live in isolation, gradually losing focus on what matters to the society they left behind. Shunsui on the other hand looks at a reigai, such as that of his old friend Ukitake or his beloved Lieutenant Nanao, and can't fully separate himself from the knowledge that they're modeled on a person he cares about. Were it not for the tampering that was done to them before they were sent into the field, they could possibly even replace the real thing without his realizing it... which particularly given the real Ukitake's current state must make it as hard for him to judge them as it is for you to heartlessly kill off Gin or Rangiku's copies.

And yet, the law is clear: the reigai are to be destroyed, whether he likes it or not. But if you were to take this in the opposite direction entirely from arguing that the reigai are people, to “dispose” of them the same way you'd fill the barrel of a howitzer with cement or blunt a sword...

“I think I do.”

A knock at the door announces that Nanao is finally through waiting outside for you to finish your argument, and she comes in with the tea that Shunsui requested.

“Ah, thanks!” he tells her cheerfully, having noticed her presence outside the door as early on as you did but trying to put on a front for her. “I always love it when you humor me like this, you always prepare my tea just right!”

“I didn't prepare this tea at all,” she insists with a glare, nearly causing Shunsui to choke. “I got an unseated officer to do it... making you a flatterer of the worst kind, Captain.”

“So I've been found out?” he chuckles. “Well now, how should I make it up to you?”

“You can start by finishing your paperwork properly...”

>Oh yeah, I was meaning to ask what was up with Retsu?

This....does feel like a poor decision on Shinsui's part, yes.

Do not give an order if you know it won't be obeyed. So either he thinks there's a good chance RIku will do this, he knows she won't, or...he's testing her? Wants her to defy him?

Yeah this is a clusterfuck for sure.

>>
>>902700
It's more like a mutual ass-covering exercise. He orders her to "dispose" of the reigai as she captures them, she complies, and if the Central 46 complains they can both argue that they did their job as they understood it.

Despite the fact that they both know that's only half true. He's starting to get used to the job.

Besides, Aizen is geared to fight the whole of SS, Riku included, so having less forces than we currently do would give him a massive advantage.

Instead of running, you rise from your chair and take a last sip of tea before stepping away from Shunsui's desk.

“I need to go, so I hope you won't mind if I show myself out.”

Shunsui waves with one hand. “Not at all. In fact if you're going to do what I think you're about to I'd like to watch.”

“Sure,” you nod, kneeling and placing your hand on the hardwood floorboards. “Heart of the south, eye of the north, finger of the west, foot of the east, gather with the winds and scatter with the rain!”

“Bakudō 58: Kakushitsuijaku!”

Within the small circle that appears on the floor before you, a scrolling series of numbers and symbols appears, constantly shifting as you refine the tracking spell and hone in on your wife's reiatsu. You can feel it from here of course, but not precisely enough for what you're about to do... at least not until your bakudō locates her precise position. You then extend your other arm, producing the white ribbon in a technique you rarely use yourself.

The inside of Shunsui's office disappears, replaced quite suddenly with the inside of the Fourth Division's offices.

“I take it you're done?” Yoruichi asks as the ribbon disappears.

You nod. “It could've gone better, I'll explain when we see Retsu.”

“Speaking of which, why was she over where you were at?”

“I don't know, didn't feel like prying,” you admit, sensing around you and finding that Unohana is indeed in her office and her Lieutenant is on her way to you.

“Ah, Captain Kusajishi!” Lieutenant Kotetsu exclaims suddenly upon spotting you. “I wasn't aware you'd be joining us.”

“Change of plans, I finished up early,” you explain. “I'm here for the same reason Captain Shihōin is.”

“I understand... right this way, Captains.”

When she sees Unohana, she too is immediately taken aback by her change of appearance. She glances at you questioningly, and you simply shrug in response.

“So why did you let your hair down?”

Retsu seems to consider her answer carefully before speaking. “I was given orders that I liked.”

“Oh?” Yoruichi asks, even more curious. “And what orders were those?”

“I was ordered to fight Captain Zaraki when he returns from training.”

Your wife does a doubletake. “Wait, you're happy about that? Retsu, you know as well as I do what that means... that's not a fight that both swordsmen are going to walk away from.”

“I do realize how that sounds,” Retsu admits calmly, “but yes, a few decades ago I would agree that taking on such a request would mean certain death. But now, I am not so certain. I get the feeling that Captain Zaraki would not kill me, nor would he have to in order to grow past his self-imposed limitations.”

That gives you an ominous feeling. “Wait... why not?”

“Because I am no longer the sole person that man wishes to fight. Even if he were to kill me there would be another, so killing me loses its purpose as an exercise in his development.”

“Okay, I think it's about time to move on,” you sigh warily, not really wanting to continue the conversation. “Yoruichi?”

“Right,” your wife nods. “So we're trying to organize our response to the reigai.”

“Beyond simply killing them when they appear?”

“Yeah, we decided we're not totally comfortable with how genocidey that is,” Yoruichi explains. “Destroying them like they're weapons to be decommissioned just doesn't feel right, you know?”

“I suppose you have a point,” Unohana agrees calmly. “So has the Head Captain given his consent?”

Yoruichi turns to you for your input, and you scratch your head. “He ordered us to “dispose” of them... knowingly without saying we should kill them all.”

“So in effect Captain Kyōraku has given you freedom to act, but will not cover for you if there is any sort of backlash from the Central 46 over your handling of the situation.”

“That was the impression I got,” you nod, “yes.”

“He really cut you loose like that?” Yoruichi asks, a hint of surprise creeping into her voice. “That's not like him at all, I guess being Head Captain isn't agreeing with him.”

“It's tied his hands in an official capacity,” you sigh, “but his heart's still in the right place. And it's not too much different from how Old Man Yamamoto used to deal with my bullshit, it's just that it'll take a little getting used-to coming from someone new.”

“Between your help and Kisuke's we should be able to handle this easily enough,” you tell Unohana. “Depending on what he thinks will work, or course.”

“And who says I intend to help you?” Unohana asks slyly. “You seem to be getting ahead of yourself, Captain.”

“You and I share a certain awareness,” you counter. “You'd do just fine as a fighter, but you're more useful to the Seireitei as a healer... and so that's how you do your duty. Same way that I could have killed every enemy I've ever met, but instead chose to forge unlikely alliances.”

“Just because one answer adheres closest to the letter of the law doesn't mean it's the right answer, and you know it.”

With a sigh, Unohana rises to her feet and slings Minazuki across her back. “That is all I needed to hear. Shall I?”

A few minutes later you arrive at your own barracks, where Kisuke is already up and limping around the now-spare office that Hisagi used to use. It seems he's already started setting up equipment in this space, probably sent here from his own headquarters.

“I'm impressed, Kisuke,” Yoruichi comments. “All these gadgets and I don't know what a single damned one of them actually does.”

“Please don't touch that,” Kisuke requests as Retsu is about to tap something that looks vaguely like a record player with wires sticking out the sides. “It can be rather... temperamental.”

“If you mean it's explosive you can just say that,” you tell him, rolling your eyes.

“Please don't touch that, Captain Unohana,” Kisuke repeats. “It could explode.”

“Better.”

“So what do you have for us?” Yoruichi asks, lifting a small stack of handwritten notes to find a small clear-lidded box underneath with a red marble in the center.

“I have here,” Kisuke announces, snatching up the box, “the first reigai we captured.”

“So it's Yoruichi,” you mutter. “That explains why it feels like it hates me.”

“She killed her own clone,” Yoruichi explains to a visibly confused Unohana. “My clone wasn't too happy about that.”

“Oh,” Retsu nods thoughtfully. “So the two of you really are...”

“Another time,” your wife interrupts. “Kisuke? Why do you have me in a box, and what are you planning to do?”

“I've got two ideas,” he replies. “The first is relatively simple, which is to implant each red pill into a reiatsu-blocking gigai...”

“Like the one you stuck Kuchiki with?” you grumble.

Kisuke gulps nervously. “Well, yes. The trick would be to break down the pill itself, stranding the soul inside the gigai. Each officer would be able to live out a normal life in the living world, utterly incapable of causing us any trouble.”

“And the alternative?” Retsu asks.

“The alternative would be to store the pills in a special device attached to a powerful computer. Their conscious minds would inhabit a simulation of sorts, where they would live out their 'shelf life' in a false world. On the one hand they wouldn't be free at all, on the other... I really don't know if it would work.”

Lemme take the liberty of answering that for you: No, we can't be 100% certain that the master illusionist and archetype of crafty and devious plots isn't going to somehow use this against us. Nor can we guarantee that for any move we make for anything, ever. Let's not let it paralyze us into indecision.
>>
>>903726
Yeah, even if we go simulation, someone could hackerman their way in.

Some action will have to taken storywise though, instead of just letting it sit there.

Speaking of which, did anything happen with the spies/monitoring devices that (I think) Mayuri left in Soul Society? Because that should be dealt with at some point.
>>
>>903760
Urahara did clean up much of the bugs, but the problem is that Mayuri had a CENTURY to spread them out, so while Urahara can do bug sweeping, he can't get rid of all of them.

“There has to be some sort of tracking system involved as well,” you insist. “As for Yoruichi's reigai, I think we all like Yoruichi here.”

“Thank you,” the real Yoruichi nods.

“But that being said her reigai knows all about where things are sealed and stored throughout Japan, and she'll carry a grudge after releasing her.”

“That's absolutely true,” Yoruichi agrees immediately. “I assume you have a plan for that, Kisuke?”

Urahara nods thoughtfully. “That's why I chose this reigai as a test subject. Part of the plan with the simulation was to erase the reigai's memories from the last hundred years or so, that way they'd be more likely to accept the simulation as real. But I realize that in Yoruichi's case I would have to go back two hundred years...”

“To before I was around,” you conclude. “That way Yoruichi's reigai wouldn't realize there was anything she should be trying to avenge.”

“That's right. That, and the fact is we have no Riku reigai to work with means we would need to erase her from the simulation. Adjustments for a lack of Aizen would also need to be mad, probably by killing him off as a Lieutenant.”

“That is why you were concerned,” Retsu realizes. “You fear that erasing that much memory would lead to unexpected side effects.”

“Correct. I have no idea if the mind can take that much strain...”

Yoruichi frowns. “In that event it may be more merciful to destroy her.”

“Yoruichi... it's your call,” you sigh, “As much as I'm conflicted, you're the one who knows best what you'd do in her position.”

After pondering the question for what almost feels like hours... Yoruichi takes the pill from Urahara's hand. She rolls it between her fingertips thoughtfully, still staring at it, making you think for a while that she's going to just crush it on the spot. But after a while, she passes the pill back to Kisuke.

“Try it,” she mutters. “If it works it works, if it doesn't... I'll finish the job myself.”

Kisuke nods grimly. “Well then, let's begin.”

He sets the red pill into a little round slot amidst the machinery, and presses a series of buttons. On a small round screen a series of jagged lines appear in glowing green, like the feedback of an EEG machine or something similar. He turns a knob and the line changes, and you have no idea what it means but Kisuke seems satisfied.

“Alright, I think this might work...” he mutters calmly. “Let's see here...”

“I like how he's not actually trying to explain any of this,” you comment to Yoruichi, who simply shrugs.

“You'd prefer him babbling pseudoscientific nonsense?”

“No, I was being serious,” you reply earnestly. “I really do prefer it this way.”

Retsu on the other hand simply watches Kisuke, as if she's actually still trying to understand what the hell he's doing. Eventually, after maybe five minutes, she gives up.

“And done,” Kisuke announces, removing the pill. “So I don't actually know whether it worked for sure, just that nothing went horribly wrong with the procedure.”

Without explaining yourself you snag the pill from Urahara's hand. “Well, do we have a stuffed animal around someplace?”

“Wait a minute, I'll be back in a second,” Yoruichi declares, quickly dashing from the room. After a few more minutes she returns, setting a familiar stuffed toy wasp down on the table.

“We can use this,” she offers, taking the pill from you and shoving it into the toy.

The wasp wiggles on the table, tests its wings, then looks up at you.

“What is this?” she asks. “Where am I? And who's the sleeveless girl?”

As much of a relief as it is to know that the procedure works, and the reigai will get to live... you can't help but notice Yoruichi doesn't like hearing those words from her clone. She shuts her eyes, and leaves the room.

Mostly they're not that interested in anime/manga, except as a casual thing. And when you have the assembled knowledge and artistic talent of a thousand years available at your leisure, there's a lot out there to entertain yourself with.
>Is Yoruichi gonna be okay?
She always is. After several centuries you tend to either crash and burn or you bounce back like a champ, and Yoruichi's solidly in the latter category.

>"You shouldn't make dumb jokes like that. Nobody ever wants to fight me anymore, it's so fuckin' boring when there's not some kinda attack goin' on or some shit."

Poor Kenny. Why doesn't he ever get himself put into a much weaker gigai of himself to fight people who normally don't pose a challenge to have a little fun or hone his skills?

What does he think about fighting games? Maybe he should take up a hobby that lets him hit things, like woodworking or some sort of sculpting? Ask Kisuke if he can plug Kenny into his weird simulation and let him fight things. He'd probably get bored of that since there is no real chance of dying in there or something.
>>
>>905035
Because even Kenny isn't that stupid, the bells and the eyepatch can be easily removed, the weak gigai would make him Hollow food.

What will you when you go beyond nine tails and basically become a Kitsune Kami?
>>

>Because even Kenny isn't that stupid, the bells and the eyepatch can be easily removed, the weak gigai would make him Hollow food.

You realize you can take a gigai off, too, right? Nor does he need to wear it constantly. I don't know why you assume he would wear it if he is going out to deal with something somewhere since the only time they send him is when something is actually dangerous and thus maybe fun for him.

I don't know how you preface your statement with "So and so is smart" then immediately turn around and say something that would make them an idiot.

The shrine where Riku was buried may technically count as "enshrining" her, the same way certain local kami and political figures get enshrined.
>>
>>906226
So will Riku's tails start diminishing after she hits the nine tails mark like in some of the lore?
>>
>>906249
Depends. If her raw power ever goes into a slow decline then yes, she will slowly lose tails. But if she truly comes into her own as a divinity her power won't decline like that, and there IS an interesting possibility somewhere in between as well.
>>
>>906226
… And Yoruichi and the quincy have left offerings at said grave, haven’t they?
>>
>>906346
Yup. The reason that shrine remains in use is because the quincy who live in the Kanto region know who was buried there, and so for example when an Ishida passes away they're often laid to rest at that shrine as well.
>>
>>906371
welp. Time to cultivate our Divine legend for becoming patron god of living Quincies. Or we could go back to the post of being "Grain". Mommy Inari's still keeping that seat warm for Riku.

- OMAKE: Extracurricular Activities with Chad -

“There's the hollow,” Chad announces, pointing his finger at the vaguely-humanoid beast as it roars indignantly.

Honshō stares at it and shivers. “Are they all that strong?”

Chad remains silent on the point, keeping to himself the fact that this is an “ordinary” hollow and is nowhere near a danger to him. Instead his arm transforms, releasing a small burst of reiatsu as it changes colors to black and red and extends upwards to protect his neck and shoulder.

“Mizuiro, you go.”

The black-haired boy, who had been on his cell phone up to that point, taps in a few last keys and folds the device. He puts it into his bag, and from the same bag produces a small aerosol can, a lighter, and a stun gun.

“Hey, where'd you get all that stuff from!?” Honshō demands loudly. “Is half of that even legal in Japan?”

“It's not a big deal,” he insists quietly as he walks down the alley towards the hollow. It notices him with a roar and lumbers in his direction, only for two barbs to connect with its thigh. Its loud challenge turns into a cry of panic as it briefly loses muscle control, collapsing to the ground. Then Mizuiro holds the can and lighter out, spraying the apparently flammable contents past the lighter and into the beast's eyes while it lies on the ground.

“Quit complaining,” he grumbles as he tosses the can, its nozzle still alight, into the hollow's mouth and ducks for cover. The can then explodes, setting the creature's entire head on fire... but not quite killing it.

Instead, Chad finishes it off with a powerful blow that shatters its mask.

Chad glances at Mizuiro, seemingly in disapproval. “If you can't kill, escape.”

“Sorry,” Mizuiro nods quietly, pulling his phone back out. “I couldn't find anything more lethal on short notice.”

Honshō still seems aghast at the implications. “Again, where are you getting this stuff!?”

Instead of indulging their banter, Chad puts his massive foot down... but quietly, as he always does. “This is important.”

“I know,” the vividly red-haired girl sighs. “Sorry, Yasutora, it's just this is still jarring, you know?”

“You can't afford to think that way,” the large boy insists quietly, putting words to what everyone present should know already. “There's no time. Keigo, you find the next one.”

- OMAKE: Retsu's Prerogative -

At the edge of the First Division's grounds, two plain-looking shinigami stand watch at a large, white gate. Their chatter is idle, their positions lax, and their attention almost wholly diverted from the job at hand.

“All I'm saying is it's weird,” one of the men insists to his partner with a shake of his head.

His partner, a man who stands a good six inches or so taller, seems unimpressed. “Why is it weird?”

“It makes her look so much older,” the first man tries to explain.

“That's not as bad a thing as you seem to think,” the larger man shrugs. “You do realize she's much older than she looks, right?”

“Wait, how old is she?”

The man seems to think to himself for a few moments. “She's one of the original Captains, I've heard. So that would make her at least the same age as Captain Kyōraku.”

“No way! That means she must be a thousand years old!”

The tall man nods sagely. “Yes, since the Gotei 13 were founded a thousand years ago she must be that age... I've heard rumors that Captain Kyōraku is even older than that!”

“I guess you're right!” the smaller shinigami laughs. “Maybe what's really strange is that she's not as old and wrinkled as you'd assume given her age?”

“Maybe she just hides them really well,” the taller man suggests. “I mean, if you were that good at kaidō wouldn't you do the same?”

As the two men continue to joke about Captain Unohana's advanced age, strangely absent wrinkles, and possible infirmity, a quiet but powerful presence slowly looms closer. They don't realize until it's already too late to save themselves.

“Excuse me, gentlemen, but I couldn't help overhearing some of your conversation,” a feminine voice interrupts them, in a chilly tone. “Perhaps I could clarify a few points?”

The taller shinigami turns to face the newcomer and almost issues a response... until he realizes who the speaker is. Captain Unohana herself stands behind them, wearing the sort of smile that makes most men's blood run cold. The color immediately drains from his face.

“Captain Unohana, ma'am...” he gulps, and his partner turns around with wide eyes as he hears the name. “We didn't realize you were here.”

“I was called to meet with the Head Captain.”
>1/2
>>
>>910591
“I see...” the larger shinigami mutters before falling silent, as if hoping that in doing so he could avoid any further conversation.

“Gossip is rather unbecoming, wouldn't you agree?” she presses, evidently not willing to allow the subject to drop so easily. “If we do not wish for things to be heard, then we should not say them. It's a simple solution which you might want to remember in the future.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“However, since you have already spoken,” Unohana continues, brushing her now-loose hair back over her shoulder, “I was indeed among the original Captains of the Gotei 13, which was founded nearly two thousand years ago. As for my apparent preservation, it is a peculiarity of those with Captain levels of reiatsu that the signs of aging are often suspended. Head Captain Yamamoto merely reached his peak later than most Captains have since the founding of the Academy. He did not benefit from modern training methods.”

“As for me... let us simply say that prodigies such as Captains Hitsugaya, Ichimaru, Kusajishi, and Shihōin are not a recent phenomenon.”

The two guards exchange a nervous glance. “I've heard rumors of course, ma'am... but are your abilities with a sword really that spectacular?”

The bloodthirsty glare that question provokes from Unohana could stop either man's heart, if they were capable of meeting it. “That is the second time today my affinity for kenjutsu has been questioned, and I will offer you the same response: all Captains are expert combatants, and my skills are among the most refined of any Captain who has drawn a blade. To ever presume otherwise would be... unwise.”

“Likewise,” she continues, stepping past the two stunned guards, “to question my choice of hair styles would be most unwise.”

“If you... don't mind me asking, ma'am,” the larger shinigami manages to find a few words to address the departing Captain, causing his partner to frantically gesture at him to shut up. “Why have you changed your hair? The braid... well, it was fine. At least I thought it suited you.”

“This is how I wore my hair, long ago,” Unohana admits, her tone of voice finally softening. “I was younger then. Foolish. Angry. Impatient. But since that time all I have done is hide that past, rather than dealing with it properly.”

“The Soul Society deserves better than the woman I was so long ago, but it also needs a stronger woman than the one I have pretended to be. Finding the middle ground...”

Without clarifying her statement, Captain Unohana departs to the relief of the two guards she leaves behind.

Finding a middle ground between "Bloodthirsty" and "Tender Mercy" is going to be hard after a millennia of going cold turkey on Indulging in no-holds barred killing/fighting and a millennia of wearing the Mercy Mask.
So Retsu's saying that Yamamoto basically stopped aging when he reached his peak in his old man years while still looking /fit/. Er go, Yamamoto was a late bloomer. And he's still considered to be the strongest Shimigami.

- OMAKE: Sly Dog -

Mirai calmly steps out onto the firing line, and walks behind the row of unseated squad members too absorbed in the practice of their shared skills to notice her presence. Unlike most people, including most shinigami, she doesn't so much as bat an eyelid at the sound of gunfire even at close range. Flinching would be absolutely unthinkable. She briefly scolds one of the shinigami she passes for doing exactly that despite his headphones, before continuing on to the weapons locker at the far end of the line. Inside it, among the dozen or so training rifles and boxes of ammunition and targets, she finds something far simpler and more elegant.

“Hello, old friend,” she mutters as she gently lifts the finely-crafted horn bow from its cradle and strings it tight, grabbing a quiver full of arrows before closing the door to the locker behind her.

With a power disproportionate to her slight frame Mirai draws back the heavy bowstring until the knuckles of her thumb fill her peripheral vision, then releases the nock with a clean, deep twang and a whistle of fletching that are barely audible between the gunshots around her. The arrow embeds itself almost its entire length into the backstop behind her target, having passed clean through the center ring.

And then she does it again.

“So whaddya really think, man?” Kai leans in as he and Starrk watch from the bench behind the firing line, having decided to take a break in their routine not long before Mirai showed up. “Come on, I won't tell anyone.”

“What do I really think...” Starrk repeats, almost blankly. “About what?”

“About Mirai!” Kai shoots back. “I know yer not a dumbass, you know what I'm sayin'!”

“About Mirai?” he repeats again with a sigh. “Well now, that's an interesting question.”

“Quit bullshittin' me!”

“I think she has many admirable characteristics,” Starrk replies calmly, shutting his eyes and leaning back against the wall behind him as Mirai reaches down to retrieve another arrow. “Composed. Diligent. Loyal. Friendly, if a bit quiet about it. I enjoy spending time with her.”

“You think she's pretty?”

Starrk cracks an eyelid. “What?”

“I mean I know you're not exactly like us,” Kai admits, rather loudly so that his neighbor can hear through their ear protection. “But you gotta admit, there's somethin' there to get a guy excited, right?”

After a moment, Starrk shuts his eye again. “You got me.”

Kai laughs... to himself, mostly, since everyone standing on the firing line is wearing the same heavy ear protection he is and can't hear him.

“I see, so you are into her!”

Starrk's brow furrows, though his eyes remain closed. “Honestly? I can't ever remember feeling like that before, so I've got nothin' to compare it to. Maybe I'm in love, maybe she's just a particularly good friend.”

“Do ya feel the same way 'bout the Captain after all these years?”

After a moment, Starrk shakes his head.

“Then that, my friend, is what we like ta call love. Take it from someone who has got somethin' to compare it to.”

A few moments later, having expended all of her arrows, Mirai nods in satisfaction. She calls the range to a halt so she can retrieve her arrows, or rather the ones that survived her practice, and allows the shooting to resume as she stows her equipment in the weapons locker. Then she turns to join Kai and Starrk, pulling the arrancar's ear protection off and placing her own over his ears.

“Trade you,” she tells him, and Starrk's eyes widen as he realizes how well he can hear her even talking in a normal voice. “Captain Urahara built these for me to test.”

There's a constant white noise in his ears, at a reasonable volume, but to his surprise the sound of the gunshots is dramatically reduced. And he can hear conversations?

“Destructive interference,” Mirai explains succinctly. “Same principle as hanki, only reduces the volume of loud, low-frequency sounds... like gunshots.”

Starrk's cheeks are tinged ever so slightly red as he realizes what this means.

“You too have many admirable characteristics, Coyote Starrk,” Mirai grins before turning to leave the firing range. “Too bad “smoothness” is not among them.”

I really like that Unohana's decided to heal that scar instead of letting it define her and getting caught up by romantizing bringing Kenpachi to his full potential, but I wonder how we helped her do that.

Did Riku's fight against Reigai Unohana factor in at all?

Oh dayum. Shot through the heart Coyote. It's not you who's doing the flirting. It's She who's doing the flirting.
Big Brother Coyote's having a giggle watching his adorable younger brother fumble.

Remember, all of the names that Unohana has ever gone by are references to her proficiency at kenjutsu. Now consider that she's dealing with a gimped Kenpachi who has the potential to be the strongest in history but right now is kind of a joke, and a pair of young(-ish) Captains who stand out even in Unohana's long memory. And to make it even more tantalizing, one is a master of Chinese swordsmanship and the other has so honed a skill at kenjutsu as to pose a challenge to the first Kenpachi's. Not in terms of raw power like Kenny, but in terms of technical skill.

This is a great time to be Unohana Retsu. Instead of feeling like something of a dinosaur, the last of the first Captains and something of a monstrous individual, the current batch of Captains has given her a reason to want to stick around.

>Yoruichi as a master of Chinese swordsmanship
when was this a thing? Or are you trying to imply that from having her pull out Guan Yu's Halberd and incorporate kung fu with her Hakuda every now and then?
>>
>>912335
It's a little subtle, because you never get it described from her perspective, but Yoruichi has trained in Shaolin kung fu for two centuries or so. She's a "master" by any measure.

On one hand, Mirai is aware of Starrk's feelings and attempts of showing affection while looking "smooth", and she reciprocates them in return in a teasing manner. Which is cute. On the other hand, did she really have to be that much of a tease to Coyote? Then again, considering how the American god Coyote flirted with the Northern Star, failing to be smooth while attempting to flirt must run in the divine family.

So How much is this going to affect Stark's Mojo in future attempts in making nice with Mirai?

Starrk is going to continue looking smooth and awesome until he actually talks to Mirai, at which point he will turn into a lovesick dork

- OMAKE: A Decade to Remember -

“That thing working?” you ask your daughter, who is working behind the screen of a television set.

She stands up quickly, smacking the back of her head against the bottom of a shelf. “Yeah, I think so? Try the remote.”

You press a few buttons, and the image on the screen becomes clearer. Not clear per se, still grainy and monotone, but about as good as could be expected. “We're getting the NBC broadcast.”

“This is Mercury control at T-minus nine minutes, forty-five seconds,” a voice informs you in English as Rangiku joins you and Yoruichi on the couch, handing you a handheld microphone with a pop filter.

“Are you getting the signal, Mirai?” Yoruichi asks over her denreishinki, waiting for a moment to hear the response. “Good. Captain Kusajishi will begin the translation momentarily.”

“It's just a description of the conditions at the Cape,” you explain in Japanese as Tenkotsuki helps smooth out any difficulties you might otherwise have with the American vernacular you're hearing and re-transmitting throughout the Seireitei. “Weather is clear for once. We can see the Atlas rocket there on the pad... quite a bit of steam and gas.”

Several minutes later you repeat the words. “Mercury control reports a go condition, thirty seconds to launch. Umbilical is out, it's on its own power. T-minus ten seconds...”

“Ignition and liftoff... it looks slower than I'd have thought for seventeen thousand miles an hour.”

“I don't think it's at full speed just yet,” Yoruichi suggests. “See, it's still accelerating.”

“Ah, so it is. Just a reminder, that converts to twenty-seven thousand kilometers an hour.”

“Just a bit faster than me,” Yoruichi jokes.

“It's still a little stunning, isn't it?” Rangiku muses. “I mean, the sheer ingenuity of it all. Just fifty years ago humans were flying around in glorified wood-framed kites with engines shoved in them. Now we can watch a manned spaceflight on the other side of the world as it happens?"

“Hell, it's been barely twenty years since the first turbojet aircraft,” you remind her. “Without the Germans I don't know if we'd be watching this thing go up at all. I hear technical experts were a hot item after the fall of the Reich... guess this kinda blazing technical progress is the reason why. It's insane, like humanity can't not shoot for the stars."

“Careful with that sorta talk,” Yoruichi teases you, “or else Captain Kurotsuchi's gonna take it as a challenge, shove you in a rocket to prove a point.”

“Can we even get into space from here?”

“You wanna find out, keep running your mouth.”

You wince. “NBC is now reporting that Friendship 7 is still green, it'll soon be in a stable orbit and the Americans will have finally caught up with the Russians. You ask me, this is shaping up to be a decade to watch...”

So if a human soul in the human world dies in outer space, how does a Shimigami gather those souls?
>>
>>921079
Short answer? It's never come up.

Long answer is that even if the three souls aboard Soyuz 11 had been stranded in space they'd have found their way back to Earth eventually. All souls that linger tie themselves to a specific place or person.
