You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

Currently, you were resting in the ship's infirmary after having a bit of an... accident? Well, something happened to your armor which fried its systems. As a precaution, you were brought here for a checkup. Thankfully, there didn't appear to be anything wrong with you, but Natalia wanted you to stay the night regardless.

You awaken to find yourself completely alone. The dimmed lights indicated to you that it was late Sol time, where the ship was running a minimum capacity. You're actually not sure how long you were out.

Not to mention, you had no idea what was going on outside of this room. Maybe you need an update...

You decide to head over to the bridge to get a handle on things. You yawn as you slip out of the bed. Your uniform is sitting neatly folded on a table next to your bed, so it's a simple thing to get changed back in. .

You shuffle back to the bridge, still a bit drowsy and dizzy. But you reach your destination, entering the bridge as casually as you can.

And as expected, the bridge was practically empty, the main crew having gone off to sleep and letting the automated system take over. And, as expected, Bradford is there, dutifully keeping watch. He's not even sitting your chair, which he technically could if you weren't present.

"Captain." Bradford nods to you. "You're up awfully late."

"Yeah, well, I got a lot of sleep already." You shrug as you settle into your command chair. "I could say the same for you."

"I don't trust leaving duties like this to automation." Bradford grumbles. "Always need to have a man in the loop."

"I suppose." You agree with Bradford's cautiousness.

"So what's the situation?" You ask.

"We managed to disengage from the Hegemony, but the Longclaw did take some moderate damage in the exchange." Bradford reports. "We've taken refuge in an uninhabited system until field repairs can be effected."

"Huh, and Carly?"

"She's fine, though she really did want to come over to see you when she heard what happened, but she has to see to her own ship first."

"I suppose I got you to thank for that, right?" You grin.

"I may have put a word or two in her ear." Bradford shrugs.

"More like entire rants." You chuckle.

"Well, either way, she's focusing on getting her ship fixed up." Bradford explains. "Otherwise, everything's been quiet."

"And my armor?"

"We sent it to Engineering for analysis." Bradford explains and then frowns. "But now that you mention it, I haven't heard from Scott in quite a while..."

"He might be asleep." You point out.

"Scott? Sleeping?" Bradford raises an eyebrow.

"Yeah, you're right. That was a dumb though." You concede. "But, well, you know him. He gets caught up in his work real easy..."

Well, that leaves us losing our Heavy suit to a gestalt conciousness that's taken over our Heavy armor, and is currently holding Scot hostage.

Ehhh. Possible, but not probable. Merc didn't state any troubled dreams, and as far as we're aware, we slept like a rock.

Which would typically mean if there WAS an invader in our mind, it's in for the long con, which isn't usually how an invader works. Doesn't hurt to be careful, but Merc didn't seemingly make the right framework for it. Nausea and dizziness are usually reserved for physical damage, not mental intrusion.

"We're just checking up on him, not breaching his room!" You scoff.

"Just a suggestion, Captain." Bradford explains. "I'll remain on the bridge. If anything happens just call."

"Of course." You nod as you get out of your command chair and head off to Engineering.

Again, the halls were as empty and desolate as you expected at this hour. However, occasionally, you'd see the odd maintenance drone rolling, floating, or trudging through the halls. Finally, you reach the rear engine compartment of the ship, where Engineering is located. You notice the door is locked and hit the comms key.

"Hey, Scott, sorry for coming by so late, but I just wanted to check up on you."

"W-what? Oh! C-C-Captain!" Scott stammers, uncharacteristically nervous. "Um, I didn't expect you to come by!"

"Yeah, well, I was hoping you could give me an update on my armor." You remark.

"Oh, um, it's fine! Everything's fine!" Scott says a bit too quickly. "But um, I'm still running some final tuneups, so it won't ready for a bit!"

"Well can I come in to see-"

"ACTUALLY, it's pretty dangerous in here right now!" Scott says even quicker. "You know, some gas leaks and cracked flux capacitor! Certainly nothing I want our captain getting near!"

Okay, something was definitely up here.

You barely even finish your sentence when the door slides open, a very haggard and terrified looking Scott greeting you.

"I'msorryit'stotallynotmyfaultIdidn'tknowwhatelsetodo!" He says faaaar too quickly for you to understand.

"Whoa, whoa." Calm the fuck down, Scott." You blink. "What the hell happened?"

"Well, I brought your armor in and I was putting it through a system scan and then then then- It's better if I show you!"

Scott then grabs your arm and pulls you in. He guides you through his workshop and over to his worktable. There, you see something very, VERY odd. You see a girl that you don't recognize at all, encased in YOUR armor! Meanwhile, Artya was kneeling at the armor's feet, checking some readings, She sees you approach and gives a cheerful, casual wave.

"Scoooooott." You glower at him. "If this is one of your weird fetish things-"

"It's not!" Scott squeaks. "Your armor, it just... came alive! And then it took my infiltrator prototype and it's been like this for the past hour!"

"My armor cannot move on its own." You say skeptically.

"Normally yes but.... now stay with me here... I think there's something IN it." Scott tries to explain. "In the programming! And now it's downloading itself into my bot!"

"Is it... dangerous?" You ask, eying the armor-encased bot warily.

"Um... that's the thing. We have absolutely no idea." Scott admits.

Artya nods in agreement.

"So what DO you know?" You narrow your eyes.

"That there's a HUGE amount of data being passed from the armor into my -er- the bot." Scott shows you a display on his holotablet. "So much, it was actually frying your suit's systems."

"And your bot can handle it?" You blink.

"I only use the best of the best for her." Scott puffs up with a bit of pride. "I got the newest cutting edge processors, so she's got exponentially more processing power than your armor!"

"...huh." You frown again. This was... certainly something. "Can we talk to it?"

"Um, neither of us have tried waking her up..." Scott mumbles.

Artya raps her knuckle on your armor, showing that it would take a bit more to wake... whatever it is you were looking at.

"Well, we can try giving it a shot to talk to it." You say. "How can we do it?"

"Well, right now, the... entity can only draw upon the armor's built in power source, so the actual amount of power it can use is extremely limited, especially since most of it is being focused on the upload." Scott explains. "If we add in just a bit more power, I think we can get it to wake up."

"You're sure about this?" You ask.

Artya just shrugs noncommittally.

"What she's saying is that we're uh, not sure." Scott admits. "But we can lock it down as a precaution."

"Do it, then." You instruct.

It takes a few minutes for Scott and Artya to set your armor onto a work table and strap it down. Scott then plugs an external power cable into the armor.

"Are you ready, Captain?" He asks.

"As ready as I'll ever be." You sigh.

"Artya, give her a 20% boost."

Artya nods and hits a key on her datapad.

Suddenly, the armor spasms, and the bot's eyes shoot open, glowing an electronic blue.

"Systems at 3% operation." The bot drones. "Analyzing surroundings."

"You can speak Terran?" You blink in surprise.

"This platform was installed with a comprehensive database of your language. It was a simple matter to cross reference it with my own." The bot replies.

"And... do you have a name?" You continue the line of questioning.

"No way. You can't be buying this, right, Artya?" Scott turns.

Artya, however, is clapping her hands together enthusiastically. She's totally for the idea.

"Not you too..." Scott groans.

YOU CAN BE HER AUNTIE. Artya writes.

"But that makes me sound ooooold." You glower.

HOW ABOUT GODMOTHER? Artya scribbles in response.

"That works."

"This unit will accept the designation 'Katya.'" The bot responds. "Initiating handshake protocols. Please provide relevant data so I may determine your level of system access."

"I need to think on this." You mutter. "Keep Katya on ice and under watch, and DO NOT connect her to anything else unless I say so, clear?"

"Crystal." Scott nods.

Artya salutes in agreement.

Christ, this situation escalated real damn fast. Just what the hell were you going to do? Wake the crew and get an emergency meeting going?

Or maybe be a bit more discreet about it and try to has things out with Elizabeth? She probably knows something about this.

Or maybe you can confide in this with Tank. You feel you could trust him for a second opinion.

Or fuck, you could just go get sloshed with Carly right now. God knows you need a drink.

Well, this wasn't something you could exactly hide from your crew, so you immediately send out an emergency action message to your senior crew, and you send off a private message to Carly as well, telling them all to drop whatever they were doing and meet you in the conference room ASAP. The only exceptions were Scott and Artya, who you tasked to stay behind and keep an eye on Katya.

And a scant half hour later, the whole crew was present and accounted for. Amy, Lida, and Elsa naturally looked like they had just been roused from bed, though Amy and Lida looked worse off. Always staying up late, those two. Bradford was... Bradford, standing dutifully in the corner. Next to him was Tank, still clad in his armor because he probably slept in that, too. Nat was also there, looking pretty chill at the odd situation.

Rounding things out was the person you were most wary of, Elizabeth, your resident spy.

Oh, right, and Carly too, who just now bursts into the room, out of breath.

"The fuck happened, Sis?" Carly pants. "Ya finally got knocked up or something?"

Godamnit, Carly.

"No, it's nothing like that." You facepalm.

"Well then what's this all about?" Amy asks grumpily.

You decide to try and ease them into the idea that you had kinda inadvertently brought an alien AI on board the ship.

"So yeah, remember that crystal we found on that island?" You speak up, "and how my armor went all wonky when I touched it?"

Everybody nods or at least shows some sign of acknowledgement.

"Well..." You sigh as you lean back in your seat. "Apparently, some kind of entity downloaded itself into my armor, and subsequently into that fembot Scott totally wasn't building in secret."

There's an awkward silence, as if everybody wasn't sure where you were going with this.

"Basically, Scott and Artya had a kid and that kid happens to be an alien AI thing that we named Katya."

"What." Amy says flatly.

Nat looks like her interest is suddenly piqued, while Bradford and Tank put on their super frowny faces. Lida and Elsa look kind of shocked. Carly looks absolutely floored.

"YOU FOUND AN HONEST TO GOD ALIEN!? HOW COME YOU FIND ALL THE COOL SHIT?!" Carly whines.

And Elizabeth keeps that grinning pokerface of hers. You're not sure if she's caught by surprise like everybody else or if she really did know more than she was letting on.

"And now it wants to acquire more data on us. Apparently it's some kind of data repository itself, so if we can, er, earn it's trust, it could help us greatly."

"I'm all for it!" Nat smiles. "Think of the possibilities, the secrets it may hold!"

"DO IT! FUCKING DO IT!" Carly encourages.

"I dunno, that seems pretty fishy." Amy narrows her eyes. "I already don't trust the AI HUMANS make."

"Dunno, could be cool." Elsa shrugs.

"I want to see it..." Lida looks like she's about to drool.

"I don't like it at all." Bradford cross his arms. "I say we lock it down and ship it back to a more secure research environment."

Tank crosses his arms in agreement with Bradford.

"Hm, what shall you do?" Elizabeth chuckles noncommittally. "Out here in uncharted space, we're effectively on our own..."

Better to do it here rather than more populated space. We'll disable communication equipment, and only have the most essential personnel onboard. "Well, we can't afford to go back, and it would be a waste to just ice her now, so we're going to allow her access to our ship's database. Maybe that could get her to trust us.

"Limited or full access?" Lida asks as she taps away at her datapad. "I get the feeling this AI- I mean - Katya wouldn't appreciate being kept out of the loop."

Hmmm, that was a consideration, but.. .well... Gullinbursti had a lot of sensitive files stored in her databanks that weren't supposed to be given out to just anybody. Hell, there was shit in there that not even you yourself were totally privy to. Unlocking all of that to an alien AI...

You glance at Elizabeth, who still has that poker face of hers going on.

Maybe it would be best to discuss things with Elizabeth first before you proceeded further. However, knowing her penchant for keeping things close to the chest, you knew that she would only reveal her secrets to you privately, if she even felt like it at all.

"All right, that's all. Everybody is dismissed." You say. "Except you, Elizabeth. I'm not done with you yet."

"Oh my how scary." Elizabeth chuckles.

"Don't make a mess or anything." Amy grumbles as she shuffles out of the room, presumably to get some sleep.

"Aw, can't I-" Carly begin to complain.

"You still have your own ship to look after, little lady." Bradford tuts as she pushes your little sister out.

Tank lingers for a second, but a confident nod from you convinces him to leave as well.

So now it's just you and the spy.
